What better way to end the day?

Two more young Buckeyes have lost their black stripes, and one name is awfully familiar for those that have kept close eyes on the Buckeyes for the past few seasons.

Nick Bosa and Malik Harrison became the latest members of the Ohio State Buckeyes to lose their black stripes, officially joining the program.

Bosa mentioned he was happy to be healthy and at his dream school with the teammates that he loves. The young Bosa had torn his ACL that effectively ended his high school career, but it appears he’s made quite the comeback.

The Columbus native Harrison thanked his unit, as well as those that have pushed him every day.

The season is getting oh so close. Can you feel it?

LGHL Ohio State center Pat Elflein ready to go after offseason shoulder surgery

Ohio State center Pat Elflein ready to go after offseason shoulder surgery

The senior center is full-go after having a cyst removed from his shoulder in May.

“I want to be the best center in the country. That’s my goal — every time I approach the field, approach the weight room, come into the building. That’s how I approach my life. I want to be the best.”

Ohio State center Pat Elflein via Bill Rabinowitz, The Columbus Dispatch

It has been quite a busy offseason so far for senior Pat Elflein. Not only is Elflein switching from guard to center, but he was also named a team captain soon after Ohio State’s win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. At one point during the offseason though, Elflein was wondering if he was even going to get the chance to play at all. There was a time where Elflein wasn’t even able to use his left shoulder, not able to even lift two pounds. Elflein says his shoulder didn’t hurt at all, he just wasn’t able to use it.

After being examined by doctors the problem was found to be a cyst that was pressing on a nerve. Doctors went in and removed the cyst in late May, which allowed the nerve to start to fire again. So far during training camp, Elflein had been doing mostly individual drills, but Wednesday marked the first time during training camp in which Elflein was a part of full-go reps. Ohio State coaches felt like Elflein was already 100 percent, but they were just bringing him along slowly. The positive that came from Elflein recovering from the surgery was it forced offensive linemen Billy Price and Jamarco Jones to step up and take more of a leadership role. Now with Elflein back in the fold, the offensive line can focus on paving holes in the season opener against Bowling Green for Mike Weber and the rest of Ohio State’s offense.

“He’s got time. We’re not in a hurry to pull it off. It’ll come off. He’s done a great job. The fact that he has low reps, that’s what we’re trying to do, just make sure we can get him through the process and get him to the gate. That’s the most important thing right now.”

Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson on Nick Bosa’s black stripe via Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

The Bosa family has to be wondering if this is the offseason that will ever end, not only for Joey, but also for Nick as well. While Joey Bosa is still entrenched in a holdout after being taken with the third pick by the San Diego Chargers in late April, Nick has yet to lose his black stripe in his first year at Ohio State. So far 19 freshman have already lost their black stripe, so to some it may seem a little surprising that the five-star recruit has yet to lose his.

Defensive line coach Larry Johnson shed a little bit of light onto why Bosa has yet to lose his black stripe and it isn’t because of his talent and performance so far. Bosa is coming of a major knee injury that he suffered in high school, which hasn’t allowed him to be a part of as many reps as some of his teammates. What the coaches have been looking for from Bosa before removing his black stripe is more reps on the field, which for him is taking a little longer since he is getting quite as many because he is coming off the knee injury. With still over a week before the season opener it wouldn’t be surprising to see Bosa lose his black stripe between now and then, and soon enough the younger Bosa will be making noise on the field just like his brother did.

“Close. I’m getting closer [to 100 percent]. It’s tough. I don’t like watching. I haven’t really done that too much. I was just in there rehabbing hard trying to get back out there.”

Former Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple via Dan Benton, The Giants Wire

Eli Apple’s first training camp as a professional hasn’t exactly gotten off to the start he was imagining after being the 10th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The former Ohio State cornerback injured his knee in the New York Giants’ preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. Apple didn’t play last week in New York’s second preseason game against the Buffalo Bills but he looks to be working his way towards playing in Saturday night’s contest against the New York Jets.

The good news is that Apple did return to practice this week for the Giants, but hasn’t quite been going full speed yet, as he tries not to aggravate the injury. Even though he hasn’t been going full speed, Apple has been able to hold his own, most notably intercepting one of Ryan Nassib’s passes in Wednesday’s practice. While Apple was injured he focused on studying film and getting a better handle on the playbook. After Saturday night’s game the Giants will wrap up their preseason on September 1st against the Patriots before opening up their 2016 regular season on September 11th against the Dallas Cowboys.

“You’re not only playing for yourself; you’re not only playing for Ohio State; you’re playing for Fikayo.”

Ohio State senior forward Danny Jensen via Eric Lagatta, The Columbus Dispatch

After an offseason in which they had to deal with the loss of one of their teammates, Ohio State’s men’s soccer team is eager to get back on the field. Tomorrow night will see the Buckeyes take on Virginia Tech in the 11th annual Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Classic, followed by a matchup with UC Santa-Barbara on Sunday evening. Ohio State will be looking to build on their performance last season, where they went 13-7-3. The 13 wins were the second-most in school history, and the 10 home wins and eight-game winning streak were school records. The Buckeyes beat Michigan in the Big Ten final, which marked their first conference title since 2009.

Ohio State will have a little extra to play for this year, as they will be playing to honor Fikayo Idowu who drowned while swimming with teammates in Apple Valley in late June. All this season Ohio State will be wearing “FI14” patches, to honor their teammate. Senior forward Marcus McCrary will be wearing Idowu’s number 14 all this season to honor his fallen friend and teammate. Expectations are high for Ohio State heading into this season, and playing to honor their fallen teammate will give the Buckeyes even more inspiration throughout the year.

The Buckeyes will have plenty of chances to get the wins they need to get back into the Big Dance.

Earlier in May, Ohio State released their non-conference basketball schedule for this year, a slate that’s highlighted by high profile games against basketball blue-bloods like UConn and UCLA.

Now, we know the entirety of Ohio State’s schedule, as the Big Ten released their conference schedule this afternoon.

Ohio State will open Big Ten play on New Year’s Day, when they hit the road to face Illinois. The full slate can be found below:

Jan 1 at Illinois

Jan 5 Purdue

Jan 8 at Minnesota

Jan 12 at Wisconsin

Jan 15 Michigan State

Jan 18 at Nebraska

Jan 22 Northwestern

Jan 25 Minnesota

Jan 28 at Iowa

Jan 31 Maryland

Feb 4 at Michigan

Feb 8 Rutgers

Feb 11 at Maryland

Feb 14 at Michigan State

Feb 18 OR 19 Nebraska

Feb 23 Wisconsin

Feb 28 at Penn State

March 4 Indiana

Basketball season is a long way away, but it would appear that the four game stretch in February where the Buckeyes must play both Michigan schools, plus Maryland, on the road will loom particularly large. The schedule doesn’t start especially forgiving either, as Ohio State will have to play three of their first four games on the road.

The Buckeyes will face Minnesota, Michigan State, Maryland, Nebraska and Wisconsin twice.

The Scarlet Knights are trying to replicate the Columbus culture, which seems smart.

The Ohio State football season will be here before you know it, and even if you’ve only been paying semi-close attention this offseason, you’re probably aware of the major storylines with the program. This is going to be an exceptionally young, but talented and athletic team. There’s a lack of proven production at wideout, running back, and defensive back. They return the best QB in the conference, and should at least compete for a Big Ten title.

But you may not know a lot about the specific teams on Ohio State’s schedule. We’ll get into a lot more detail before the actual games, but you may want a primer so you can sound smart at the bar, or at the barbecue, or in the grocery store checkout line.

So take a look at Ohio State’s opponents this year. Next up, the Buckeye’s first Big Ten opponent, Rutgers.

So, what was the story with Rutgers last year?

It’s a long story, and almost all of it was bad. Off the field, everything was basically one constant disaster movie, from multiple players getting in trouble with the law, to their head coach getting involved in the absolute dumbest cheating scandal ever. These are the sorts of things you have a hard time getting away with if your team is very good, and Rutgers was not very good.

The Scarlet Knights won just a single Big Ten game (a massive comeback against Indiana), and for the second year in a row, looked mostly uncompetitive against the best teams in the Big Ten. The school decided it was time for a change, canning Kyle Flood, and hiring Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash, in a little bit of an upset. Ash is now trying to rebuild Rutgers culturally to more closely emulate Ohio State, in everything from organizational excellence, to hatin’ on Michigan.

What should we expect from Rutgers on offense this year?

Ash tabbed Drew Mehringer, a former Rice QB, Tom Herman assistant, and OSU grad assistant as his offensive coordinator, presumably to run an offense similar to what Herman, and Urban Meyer at Ohio State, are cooking up. Spread-to-run principles with mobile QBs, occasional tempo and verticality in the passing game. When, or I suppose, if, Rutgers gets the personnel to run that system, it could be pretty exciting. After all, there are certainly athletes on the banks.

Do they have that now? Eh ... Kinda? Rutgers returns four starters from a pretty decent offensive line, and has some skill position talent, like returnman Janarion Grant and running backs like Robert Martin and Josh Hicks that can do some damage against Big Ten defenses.

But the most important position is the quarterback, and neither of of Rutgers’ QBs Chris Laviano (who struggled with turnovers last season) or former LSU Tiger Hayden Rettig are going to bring up memories of Braxton Miller or Greg Ward. There’s also the question of who replaces Leonte Carroo as a big play threat. Both Ohio State and Houston were great at producing explosive plays, but Rutgers hasn’t been. And this baseline talent level may not be high enough to dink and dunk people to death.

Okay, so maybe there’s some potential with that offense. What about the defense?

It was pretty bad! Thanks to injuries and suspension, Rutgers was forced to trot out a lightly experienced secondary that got absolutely barbecued at every opportunity. The good news for Rutgers fans is that virtually everybody is back, now with more experience. But its not like Rutgers is bring back a cadre of four-star defensive backs that just needed a little seasoning.

Last season, Rutgers gave up the fifth worst number of passes of 20 yards or more. Michigan graduate transfer Ross Taylor-Douglas joining the group should help, but a massive improvement from this group feels a bit unlikely, even with Chris Ash’s reputation as a excellent teacher of defensive fundamentals.

Rutgers is also replacing basically all of their linebackers, but they have a legitimately very good defensive tackle in Darius Hamilton, and the Scarlet Knights could have a spicy run defense, which is critical to competing in the Big Ten East.

Has Rutgers ever beaten Ohio State?

In football? No. The two teams have only played twice, but Ohio State won both games by a combined 105-24 score.

Is Rutgers going to be any good this season?

They should be improved. Their secondary can’t get much worse than it was last year, and they just hired a new head coach who has a solid record of teaching and improving defensive play, even if the pieces don’t totally fit. They have some skill position talent, and after murderous schedules their first two years in the Big Ten, the league slate lets up a little bit.

But even with all of that, there aren’t many possible wins on this schedule, the talent disparity between them and their division opponents is significant, and their secondary will probably still suck. This doesn’t seem like a bowl team to me.

How worried should Ohio State fans be about this game?

Losing to Rutgers is going to happen someday, and when that day comes, I will need to eat a lot of words that I’ve written about them on the internet. But on homecoming, after a bye week, while Rutgers is working out a new coach and new offensive systems, does not seem likely. The Buckeyes should be favored by a very healthy amount, and even if they don’t cover, they should still beat Rutgers relatively comfortably.

The Buckeyes go west for this 2017 offer

Falo catches Bucks offer

With two new commitments in the past few days, Ohio State has put together a memorable recruiting week. The Buckeyes were able to pull 2017 wide receiver Trevon Grimes (St. Thomas Aquinas) from the state of Florida and fellow WR of the 2017 class Tyjon Lindsey (Bishop Gorman) all the way from Nevada. Lindsey will join defensive tackle Haskell Garrett and quarterback Tate Martell as the members of Bishop Gorman’s 2017 class to accept their offers to OSU.

On Wednesday, Ohio State went back out on the west coast to begin their pursuit of another prospect in this year’s class. Tight end Josh Falo (Sacramento, CA / Inderkum), a four-star player, was the latest recipient of a Buckeye offer.

Very blessed to say that I have received a scholarship to The Ohio State University!!! #BuckeyeNation #ZONE6 pic.twitter.com/Qa8weuqPuF

— Josh K. Falo ® (@Josh_falo) August 24, 2016

Falo is a 6-foot-5, 227-pounder and is graded out as a top five player at the tight end position in this class. The Sacramento native is also ranked 161st overall and the 16th top player from the ultra talented state of California.

In order for the Buckeyes to make a play for Falo, they will need him to make the trip from Cali to Columbus for a visit. For now, all signs point to Falo taking his big frame out to Eugene to suit up for Mark Helfrich and the Oregon Ducks.

OSU in good spot for top safety

247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong put together a piece highlighting just how special 2017 cornerback Jeffrey Okudah (Grand Prairie, TX /South Grand Prairie) is. Wiltfong stated that the five-star prospect is “first defensive back taken in the NFL Draft special” and included portions of others raving about the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder.

As we all know, Okudah is one of Ohio State’s top targets in this year’s class and Wiltfong dropped a few words that should definitely have Buckeye fans feeling good on where they stand with the South Grand Prairie standout. According to Wiltfong, everything he hears has Okudah winding up at Ohio State. The 247Sports Crystal Ball supports that claim, as the Buckeyes are the wide favorite.

Okudah is the six best player in the class, the No.1 cornerback in the country and the No.2 player from the state of Texas. Make no mistake, if the Buckeyes do seal the deal with Okudah, they will continue to create space for the No. 1 ranked class for 2017.

They could also create a discussion for the greatest recruiting class ever on paper.
