It’s a good thing defensive touchdowns count just as much as offensive ones.

It sure seemed like Ohio State was going to head into halftime leading Tulsa, 13-3, thanks to a lackluster offensive effort. The Buckeyes did not have a single offensive touchdown, and with torrential rain approaching, more points in the near future seemed unlikely.

But Marshon Lattimore had other ideas.

Thanks to Tulsa’s puzzling decision to keep throwing down the field, in the rain, Dane Evans threw yet another interception, and Lattimore grabbed his second pick of the day. But this time, he took it 40 yards to the house.

Who needs offensive touchdowns? An all pick-six offense is innovative, sure, but it’s also effective. Now, the Buckeyes can head into halftime with a more comfortable 20-3 lead, and with heavy rains coming, it might be all of the cushion they need to hand the ball off and slog through the rest of the win.

Lattimore joins Malik Hooker is housing Tulsa interceptions on the day. We’ll see if they have another one in store.

Lightning means you have to play it safe.

Despite unexpectedly clear skies to begin Ohio State’s game against Tulsa, the Buckeyes offense struggled to find much in the way of an identity.

Buckeyes miscues a plenty let Tulsa keep things interesting, before a combination of the Golden Hurricane making mistakes in their own right coupled with a nasty storm front rolling into Central Ohio allowed the Buckeyes to put some distance between them and the visitors.

But with the rain came lightning and with lightning a mandatory delay of at least 30 minutes. As patrons scurried out of the stands into under the awnings of Ohio Stadium to begin halftime, notices throughout the facilities gave fans an update as to the weather situation:

The message here at Ohio Stadium. Lightning causing at least a 30 minute delay. Start of delay is 5:25. #OSUvsTulsa pic.twitter.com/MREUv9nNNE

— Lantern Sports (@LanternSports) September 10, 2016

The Best Damn Band in the Land’s halftime show was ultimately canceled due to the weather situation as well.

If the 30 minute count is from when the delay was first announced, the second half should be expected to resume around 6:02 p.m. ET. Worth keeping in mind each additional reported lightning strike within a 10 mile radius could lead to that start time being pushed back further.

All he does is make big plays.

Ohio State sophomore Malik Hooker reads the quarterback eyes better than just about anyone.

Not even a year after he reportedly quit the football team multiple times as he struggled to adjust to both college life and the rigors of major college football, Hooker’s turned into one of OSU and Urban Meyer’s secret weapons.

After a sluggish, lackluster (look ahead to Oklahoma?) start to the Buckeyes’ game against Tulsa, Hooker took matters into his own hands and expanded OSU’s lead just as a series of storms made their way into Columbus:

If Hooker keeps making plays like this, days like Saturday’s when the Buckeyes’ offense struggles to get into gear — though not ideal — will be far more palatable.

Buckeyes will need to pressure the QB this week.

Due to gaffe on my part, we failed to run the season-opening edition last week.
But What Do You Want To See is back and better than ever. I hate that cliché but oh well.
Each week our crack staff, and our staff on crack will present a wish list of sorts, highlighting expectations for the OSU game that week.

Ready?

Chip

Interior DL play: Hill and probably Jones will be tested against Tulsa this week. The loss of Sprinkle has OSU very inexperienced at a position where recruiting has not been strong.

Better pass rush: Yes, BG was getting rid of the ball quickly, but OSU was not making the Falcons rush throws. OSU was fortunate to have BG’s WRs drop several passes.

More JT Barrett runs on passing plays: If the receiver isn’t open, take what they give you on the ground for positive yardage scrambling upfield.

JT Barrett needs to run a bit on passing plays that aren’t there.

Quicker rotation of the backup players: No reason to keep anyone in if there is a huge lead in the third quarter. The 2014 season is still very fresh in my mind; play Burrow and Haskins. Play the backup OL, LBs, secondary, etc.

Scott

A win: Can’t lose to this team.

A shutout: Defense only gave up three last week. Let’s see Tulsa blanked.

No injuries: Can not afford any with Oklahoma coming up.

Burrow: Get it over with early so Joe can get some more minutes.

Brandon

Defensive line pressure: It was hard to see against BG because the QB did not hold onto the ball long. OSU needs to pressure Tulsa and its high-powered passing attack.

Sound coverage in secondary: I think they are still working out the kinks back there as Lattimore and Webb work into game shape. A few missed tackles against BG could have led to big plays.

Offense keeps going: Keep the pressure going against Tulsa and don’t let off the pedal. The Buckeyes are running 6-10 deep at WR, continue to move them in and out while keeping the high-tempo.

Mike M.

Health: With Sprinkle going down last week, the last thing we need is anyone else being out. OU may have been embarrassed at NRG in Houston, but being there, it sure didn’t feel like UH manhandled them until very later. They will be tough in Norman.

Stop the broken record: Make it so we don’t all put in “defensive line pressure” next week. I know BG is a quick pass offense, but the young Bucks on the DL should still be able, on talent and technique alone, to beat these OLs they are facing now.

Weber: I know we all love JT and Samuel had his coming out party last week, but Weber will be the key to this offense throughout the B1G schedule. I want to see him continue to grow, power the football when needed, and I would like him to get into the end zone. Last week was a great game for the Cass Tech product, and I am excited to see what else he does.

Ben

A solid win with no injuries: We need everyone healthy when we travel to Norman. I would again like to see more of the second and third team play to gather experience. Just an overall good game put away early so we can focus our attention on Oklahoma.

On the same day, Michigan had two decommitments.

Welcome to a special edition of Ohio State recruiting on Land-Grant Holy Land. Typically, you see the recruiting news from Monday thru Friday, however, some big Buckeye offers went out late Thursday and early Friday – as well as a noteworthy decommitment from the Michigan Wolverines.

4-star ATH gets OSU offer

On Friday, Ohio State made an offer in an attempt to get a head start on their 2019 recruiting class. Jordan Whittington (Cuero, TX / Cuero) got the offer to be part of the Zone 6 family. Through Twitter, Whittington let the world know that he picked up another college offer.

VERY blessed and excited to receive my 10th offer from THE Ohio State University #ZONE6 pic.twitter.com/wBz8VQs8at

— Jordan❄Whittington (@J_Whitt3) September 9, 2016

Being from the state of Texas, it’s only natural that the home state programs have shown interest in the 6’1 athlete. Baylor, Houston, TCU and Texas A&M are just some of the programs interested in keeping Whittington inside the Lone Star State. Because he is a 2019, the recruiting rankings aren’t out for the Cuero star, but, if he’s picking up top tier offers this early in his recruitment, then he has to be the real deal.

As time goes on, we’ll see where Whittington will decide to play at the next level.

California Dreamin’

Ohio State also made an offer to four-star outside linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu (Claremont, CA / Claremont). Late Thursday evening, the No. 6 OLB in the 2018 class made the news apparent on Twitter that he had an offer from the scarlet and gray.

Blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University ☝ pic.twitter.com/7Rf2Wp8PDZ

— Solomon Tuliaupupu (@nokeakua) September 9, 2016

Right now, the 230-pounder holds a total of 16 offers, according to 247Sports. Some of the notable schools that are looking for the services of Tuliaupupu include: USC, Oregon, Michigan and Notre Dame. Two predictions on the 247Sports crystal ball has the Claremont, Calif. native staying on the West Coast – and attending USC.

We’ll have more on Tuliaupupu’s recruitment as the news develops.

4-star ILB decommits from Michigan...

Making a rumbling in the recruiting world, 2018 inside linebacker Antwuan Johnson (Dayton, OH / Dunbar) decommitted from the Michigan Wolverines on Friday morning. Johnson is ranked as the No. 14 player in the state of Ohio and No. 6 ILB in the country.

Johnson made the decision via Twitter that he was going to reopen his recruitment.

I look forward to getting back into this recruiting process pic.twitter.com/j8tdxIbcwS

— Antwuan Johnson (@Antwuan21) September 9, 2016

Jumping onto the radar for Johnson’s services are the Louisville Cardinals. At the moment, Johnson is scheduled for an unofficial visit with the Bobby Petrino coached squad on Sept. 17, according to 247Sports. However, there are eight other schools that have offered the Dayton product a chance to play college football at the next level.

Big Ten programs Iowa and Indiana have offered the 6’1 linebacker, as well as in-state schools Cincinnati and Bowling Green. While Ohio State hasn’t sent an offer toward Johnson, they may take a closer look at the Dunbar High product. Currently, the Buckeyes have two commitments on their 2018 board – and none of them are on defense.

As time goes on, Luke Fickell and Urban Meyer might make the move to keep Johnson inside the Buckeye State.

...and a 3-star decommits from the Wolverines, too

Around the same time as Johnson’s decision to look at other programs, 2017 tight end prospect Carter Dunaway decided to look at his options, too. While the Buckeyes aren’t pursuing Dunaway, a few other Big Ten programs are. Indiana, Nebraska and Purdue all have sent offers to the 6’6 TE from Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

It’s not too uncommon for players to decommit from a program. Ohio State’s 2017 class had two decommitments; the Wolverines now have three. But, if you’re a Buckeye fan, watching the Wolverines lose a commit can only help make your day a tad bit sweeter.

Can the Buckeyes keep the points parade going?

With a 77-10 win over Bowling Green in their season opener, the Ohio State Buckeyes moved up to the No. 4 spot in the AP Poll behind just Alabama, Clemson and Florida State. Now, the Buckeyes move on to week two facing the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Ohio State had a very promising start to its 2016 campaign, with a record-breaking wallop of Bowling Green on offense. Quarterback J.T. Barrett left little doubt as to his abilities, having accounted for seven of the team’s 10 offensive touchdowns. Curtis Samuel fit extremely well into his hybrid roll, scoring two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. And the youth on the team demonstrated that they are ready for the big stage in their opener, with impressive performances on both sides of the ball by the likes of Mike Weber, K.J. Hill and Rodjay Burns.

While many in Buckeye nation are looking ahead to next week, when Ohio State travels to Norman to face a now winless Oklahoma squad, Tulsa is not to be overlooked. Head coach Philip Montgomery, formerly Baylor’s offensive coordinator, has taken the team from a 2-10 record in 2014 to a 6-7 performance last season, culminating with an appearance in the Independence Bowl against Virginia Tech. The Golden Hurricane are now 1-0 on the young season, with a 35-point victory over San Jose State last week.

The Buckeyes can’t afford to look past Tulsa, and will need to close them out of the game early on both sides of the ball. With one game under their belt on the season, the young Ohio State team will need to continue to gel together and improve as they prepare for their big test against an angry Sooners team next week.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Sept. 10, 3:30 p.m.

Location: Ohio Stadium

TV: ABC

Online: WatchESPN

Radio: 97.1 FM/1460 AM

Where is GameDay this weekend?

After opening the season at Lambeau Field with a shocking Wisconsin victory over LSU, the Gameday crew is heading to Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee for an ACC-SEC matchup between Virginia Tech and Tennessee. This is the first time that Gameday has opened the season at two neutral sites, and is the 75th-different city that Gameday has aired from. Tennessee moved out of the top-10 following a 20-13 overtime win over Appalachian State, despite being 20.5 point favorites. Virginia Tech, meanwhile, comes to Bristol after a 36-13 win over Liberty.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to today?

In the spirit of in-state rivalries, Penn State faces Pittsburgh at noon on ESPN in the first edition of a rivalry which was last played out in 2000. No. 16 Iowa itself faces Big 12 foe Iowa State at 7:30 on BTN. In other in-state matchups, Northwestern plays Illinois State at 3:30 on BTN, while Indiana takes on Ball State at 4:00 on ESPN News. Elsewhere in the Big Ten, at noon, Michigan will take on UCF on ABC, while Cincinnati faces off against Purdue on BTN as part of its potential bid to join the Big 12. Wisconsin follows up its big win over LSU with a matchup against Akron at 3:30 on BTN. In the conference’s only other night game, Illinois will face an 0-and-1 North Carolina squad at 7:30 on BTN.

Thoughts on Last Week –

I sure wasn’t expecting that outcome in the first game of the season! The team came out firing on all cylinders – minus that pick-six – and showed it has the potential to be a serious playoff contender this year. When you put up 77 points and 776 yards of total offense in the first game of the season, there’s a lot to be happy about.

I personally liked seeing so many young guys make their debuts for the Buckeyes against Bowling Green. Last year we only saw four true freshmen break into game action, and we’ve already seen 10 so far this year. Skill players like Joe Burrow and Demario McCall had good days – Burrow had his first collegiate TD pass, which happened to go to McCall. One of the most popular talking points last game was the selection of Michael Jordan on offensive line. He’s the first true freshman to start on the line since Orlando Pace did it in 1993. Jordan’s no Orlando Pace, but he surely held his own on Saturday despite a few penalties. We also saw Nick Bosa rack up his first career sack (the first of many, I’m sure), and Rodjay Burns take one to the house on a pick-six late in the 4th quarter.

This team is very young with only six seniors on scholarship, but after what we witnessed last week, the future at Ohio State is bright with all the talent that Urban and Co. is bringing in on a year-to-year basis.

Players of the Game –

Curtis Samuel – I know J.T. Barrett won Big Ten Player of the Week, but without Samuel, he probably wouldn’t have. Samuel provided that true H-back Urban has been looking for since he got here. Eighty-four yards rushing on 13 carries, 177 yards on nine receptions, and three touchdowns probably would’ve won Samuel the award any other week.

Malik Hooker – I mean, he put on an interception clinic on Saturday. The first one was simply amazing. The fact he was able to cover so much ground to get to the ball, jump up as high as he did, tip the ball, and then concentrate enough to come down with it was simply spectacular. On his second interception, I thought the Bowling Green receiver had it, but then I see Hooker running away with the ball. He again ran across the field to make the play and stole the ball right out of the hands of the receiver. It’ll be fun to watch him prowl around the secondary all season, that’s for sure.

On Tulsa –

Tulsa comes to us from the American Athletic Conference, which is the home to some quality football programs like Houston, Cincinnati, and ECU. They defeated San Jose State last week 45-10 and racked up 512 yards of offense in doing so. They have experienced leaders on offense in senior quarterback Dane Evans and junior running back D’Angelo Brewer. Considering they ran the ball 58 times against San Jose State, I expect they’ll try it again against the Buckeyes. Unlike San Jose State, though, Ohio State will be ready to plug the gaps. Tulsa held the Spartans to 287 yards of offense and only 10 points last week, but I think the Buckeyes will at least double those numbers with their arsenal of speed and weaponry.

What am I looking for out of this game? I want the Buckeyes to come in focused on the task at hand and not looking ahead to Oklahoma next weekend. If they do that, they should win this game pretty easily. I hope to see a more dominate offensive line that can open additional holes for Mike Weber, Curtis Samuel, and the other backs. Watching Samuel and Dontre Wilson catch balls is nice, but I really want to see the other wide receivers step up. Guys like Noah Brown and KJ Hill, even Austin Mack and Parris Campbell, both of whom were held without a catch last week, should get more involved this week.

On defense, I’m hoping to see more of the same. We kept big plays in check against Bowling Green, and we need to contain Tulsa in a similar manner. We didn’t hear much about the linebackers on the television broadcast last week, but that’s because the defensive line was doing a great job plugging the holes and limiting Bowling Green’s running game to 2.5 yards per carry. The secondary will continue to gel around Gareon Conley and Malik Hooker, with Marshon Lattimore and Damon Webb continuing to grow in their roles. The loss of Tracy Sprinkle for the year certainly hurts as far as depth goes, but the show must go on. I’m looking for Davon Hamilton and Dre’mont Jones to come out of their shells and shore up that defensive tackle spot.

Overall, I don’t think we’ll see the same offensive output as last week, but I still expect us to have a decent showing. My prediction: Ohio State 59, Tulsa 13.

Musings –

Like most of America, I watched a lot of college football over the weekend, and I’ve come to the conclusion that preseason polls need to go away. Yes, I understand they generate discussion and make the offseason a little more bearable, but after what I saw last weekend, preseason polls – as always – mean squat. LSU was a preseason top-five team and looked pretty terrible against Wisconsin. Tennessee was ranked 9th and needed overtime to take down Michigan-slayer Appalachian State. Oklahoma was preseason #3 and lost to Houston in a game the Sooners never really had much of a chance to win. Texas held on against ninth-ranked Notre Dame, and FSU came from behind to take down #12 Ole Miss.

How about we hold the rankings until teams have played five weeks of football? By then, everyone will have played a cupcake or two, a tough non-conference opponent, and a few conference opponents. Then we can really see who’s who. I know I shouldn’t get so riled up about these polls since the only one that matters is the one the College Playoff Committee puts out at the end of the year, but I can’t help it.

The polls are just too subjective. Let’s take for instance Jon Wilner, who’s an AP poll voter for the San Jose Mercury News. His preseason #1 pick was Ohio State, but after one week, he dropped them to the 9th spot. His reasoning –

“You’ll note that the top-eight teams on the ballot all played marquee opponents, not cupcakes. The rankings are based on my view of the quality of the individual win — Alabama over USC being the best, followed closely by Texas over Notre Dame.”

I’m sorry Jon, but that’s not how it’s done. You rank teams based on their overall performance, not just the “quality” of a single win. You ranked Ohio State preseason #1 with the knowledge that it opened with Bowling Green and Tulsa. You knew the Buckeyes would probably blow both teams out of the water, but you put them #1 anyway. Then, after a great weekend of college football, the Buckeyes’ 67-point win over Bowling Green wasn’t as impressive as Texas’ three-point win against Notre Dame? Sure, Texas was probably under-rated going into the season, but catapulting them from unranked to #2 in the country based on a double-overtime win against the #10 team seems a bit farfetched. Yes, it was a good win, but seriously, #2? If we follow Jon’s reasoning, Ohio State is only two ticks better than TCU, who struggled until late with FCS foe South Dakota State.

Let me end on this: I enjoy the preseason hype as much as the next person, and discussing college football year-round makes me happy. But when I have to read and listen to 15 voters put out 15 different top-25 rankings based on their personal logic, then all credibility for the voting system goes out the window. I’d rather the voters wait five weeks, see teams in action against a variety of opponents, and then make a logical Top 25. Sure, I put together my top four at the end of this column, but I don’t get paid to look like a fool. I do that for free.

A Fan’s Week 1 Playoff Predictions –

Alabama – A dominate performance on a big stage against a ranked opponent with a freshman quarterback. Not much more you could ask for, in my opinion, but Nick Saban will demand more from his team as they prepare to enter the SEC gauntlet later this year.

Houston – I called it last week when I said they would beat Oklahoma, but I didn’t see it being so easy. They shut down Baker Mayfield and provided the Buckeyes with a great scouting report on how to win. I expect old friends Tom Herman and Urban Meyer to discuss what went down as Ohio State gets ready to make the trip to Norman.

Clemson – Until they lose, I still think they belong here. Yes, they struggled against Auburn, but it was a road game in a hostile environment. We saw what the Deshaun Watson-to-Mike Williams combo is capable of, and I expect them to be a dynamic duo the rest of the season. Again, the battle with FSU looms large, as the winner of that game will most likely be playoff bound.

Ohio State – Yep, I’m biased, but the way the Buckeyes played on Saturday made them look like a playoff contender right out of the gate. The offense got rolling after the early pick-six, and the defense shut down the likely MAC champions. We’ll see what these young Bucks are made of in two weeks in Norman.

A Fan’s Week 1 Heisman Standings –

Christian McCaffrey – If you didn’t see the punt return that wasn’t, look it up. We might’ve seen a Heisman moment in the first game of the season if not for a weak block-in-the-back call that reversed it. Add 22 carries for 126 yards and two TDs (not counting the infamous punt return touchdown) and seven receptions for 40 yards to Mr. Does-It-All’s resume. Right now he holds the top spot for me.

J.T. Barrett – A six passing, one rushing touchdown performance in the first game of the season vaults Barrett up a spot in my rankings. He bounced back from an early pick-six to settle into a rhythm. Although he favored Curtis Samuel quite a bit, he completed receptions to eight other receivers, and he looked good running the read-option as well.

Nick Chubb – Boy, did he return from a season-ending injury in a big way! In a game against a tough North Carolina opponent, Chubb put up 222 yards on 32 carries and two touchdowns in Georgia’s come-from-behind victory on Saturday. Chubb didn’t look rusty at all as he ran through the Tar Heel defense.

Deshaun Watson – Yes, he didn’t look great against Auburn. He didn’t throw or run the ball particularly well, and he has high expectations on his shoulders this year since he’s leading a team that lost very few offensive pieces. He’ll continue to get better throughout the season, and I fully expect him to end up at the trophy presentation at the end of the year.

Brandon’s look through Woody’s eye’s . . ,

“Holy crap! Week one of the college football season was absolutely amazing. From watching our Buckeyes dominate Bowling Green to Texas beating Notre Dame and all the SEC losses in-between, the “greatest opening weekend” definitely lived up to its billing! Unfortunately for us, as great as the first week was…the second week is that bad. It’s really a toss-up what is the most important game this weekend? Let’s take a look:”

“While the Ohio State football team’s first game of the season may have gotten the most attention, the biggest Buckeye games of the weekend belonged to the OSU women’s soccer and volleyball teams.

After opening the season with four straight wins, the Ohio State women’s soccer team faced their toughest test yet of the season on Thursday when they traveled to Blacksburg to take on 16th ranked Virginia Tech.”

A few other Buckeyes are expected to do well, too.

“Welcome to a new NFL season. Everything you believe about all 32 teams now will be turned upside down before Super Bowl LI. And probably much sooner than that.”

– Frank Schwab, Yahoo! Sports

Last night, the NFL season started off with the dramatics (and a handful Buckeyes). The defending Super Bowl Champions, the Denver Broncos, eked past the Carolina Panthers, 21-20. Former Buckeyes Bradley Roby, Corey “Philly” Brown and Ted Ginn Jr. were just a few of the members of the scarlet and gray army in the NFL.

Good luck tonight Buckeyes!! pic.twitter.com/RrMhPxcHKW

— Urban Meyer (@OSUCoachMeyer) September 8, 2016

Now, looking ahead to the rest of the season, Yahoo! Sports’ Shutdown Corner made their predictions on how the year would shape out.

Of the six members of the prediction staff, there was a unanimous vote that Ezekiel Elliott will be the offensive player of the year. Additionally, Frank Schwab made the prediction that Elliott would be a dark horse candidate for the MVP award as well as the rushing champ.

For the biggest breakout of the year, one panelist selected Terrelle Pryor. After making a couple big plays in the preseason for touchdowns, it’s not too surprising to see the former Buckeye quarterback be selected as a breakout star at wide receiver.

On the flipside, a few predictions casted for rookie disappointment include former Buckeyes. Joey Bosa, who recently signed with the San Diego Chargers, had two votes, while Taylor Decker collected one vote.

“He was an incredible coach and motivator. He always had the guys ready to play. It was unreal to beat Alabama in that game. There is nothing better, especially with the season we had, it was an emotional rollercoaster,”

– Darron Lee to New York Jets team reporter Alex Giaimo (newyorkjets.com)

On Thursday, Darron Lee did an interview with the New York Jets – and there were some nuggets involving his time with Urban Meyer.

Lee spoke about what it was like playing for Meyer, and the feeling of winning a national championship. On the route to the championship, Lee talked about the tragedy that struck the football program, and how the team was able to rise up and win the inaugural college football playoff.

Additionally, Lee touched on a bunch of other topics: ranging from why his Instagram name is the “Manimal”, what he does in his free time off the gridiron, what the food is like back in Tennessee and what his favorite song of the 1990s was.

Spoiler: it’s Hypnotize by the Notorious B.I.G.

For Lee, his New York Jets begin the season at home on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.

"It's a confidence booster just knowing he's back there, you got somebody back there who can play and you can trust,"

– Gareon Conley on Malik Hooker, via Bill Landis (cleveland.com)

After the stellar performance against Bowling Green last week, Malik Hooker has bursted onto the scene at Ohio State. After his mesmorizing one-handed interception in the first half last week against the Falcons, the defensive back looks to do more of the same this week against Tulsa.

Combined with Hooker’s ability to be a playmaker, cleveland.com gave a few more reasons on why the Buckeyes will come out victorious Saturday afternoon against the Golden Hurricanes.

Quarterback J.T. Barrett’s speed was also one of the x-factors if the Buckeyes were to pull away with a victory. The high octane offense that Urban Meyer utilizes matches the experience Barrett has had with this style. Bill Landis points out that the Buckeyes ran 94 plays on offense, compared to Tulsa’s 83. If the Buckeyes needed to trade blows on offense, they are more than equipped to do so.

Another of the points made by Landis was that the Buckeyes don’t need to get sacks, as long as they were pressuring the Golden Hurricane offense and passing game. Tulsa’s quarterback Dane Evans moves the ball quick, but tends to take shots down the field, according to Landis.

We’ll see how true these points are for an Ohio State victory. Kickoff for the Buckeyes is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Big Ten East Recruiting Round-up – September

big10-150x150.jpg

Welcome to the September edition of the Big Ten Recruiting Round-up. We normally focus on all things Ohio State here at The Buckeye Battle Cry, but today we are going to branch out and take a look at where all of the other teams in the Big Ten East stand as far as recruiting goes for the class of 2017. We are a little less than six months from signing day, and while we know a lot about the class that the Buckeyes will be bringing in, what do the classes that the rest of the Big Ten look like right now and how might they finish? We will take a look at the Big Ten West next week.

Michigan Wolverines – Class Rank #10 – 17 Commitments

Current Class

0 – 5-Star

10 – 4-Star

7 – 3-Star

Photo via McCaffrey’s Twitter

Michigan’s 2017 class is headlined by Dylan McCaffrey, a 4-star quarterback out of Littleton, Colorado. McCaffrey is a pro-style quarterback and is the #1 overall athlete from the state of Colorodo. If the name sounds familiar, his older brother Christian plays for Stanford, and his father Ed was a longtime NFL receiver. McCaffrey could very well take over as the starting quarterback next year if none of the current lot are able to stand out this season. Some other big names have committed to the Wolverines in Luiji Vilain a defensive-end out of Alexandira, Virginia and Josh Ross, a linebacker out of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

In terms of kids that Ohio State recruited as well as Michigan, Vilain and Ross both had Buckeye offers along with Corey Malone-Hatcher (4-star DE). They do however boast a couple of players from the state of Ohio in this class. James Hudson is a 4-star defensive end from Toledo, Ohio that the Buckeyes were watching but never offered. Joel Honigford is a 3-star offensive tackle from Sugarcreek, Ohio that camped at Ohio State but was not offered.

Some kids to keep an eye on becoming Wolverines before this recruiting cycle is over are Donovan Peoples-Jones the 5-star wide receiver from Cass Tech in Detroit. He has been an 80% crystal ball projection to Michigan currently. Drew Singleton from Paramus Catholic or as I like to call them Michigan East, is a 4-star linebacker that has a 91% crystal ball projection to the Wolverines, who are the home to his former high school teammate Rashan Gary. Tedarrell Slaton and Cesar Ruiz both out of Florida have a crystal ball projection greater than 60% for the Wolverines as well. Ambry Thomas the 4-star cornerback out of Detroit’s Martin Luther King is likely to end up in Ann Arbor as well before all is said and done. A dark horse to watch is Najee Harris out of California. He has been committed to Alabama since April of 2015, but has made visits since then, and Michigan is a team to watch. And last but not least is Jaylen Kelly-Powell who has a 100% crystal ball projection to Michigan right now, and it would be a shock if he ended up anywhere else.

Michigan has had three decommitments in this recruiting cycle in Aubrey Solomon and Jeremiah Holloman, both athletes out of Georgia and today Carter Dunaway a 3-star TE out of Michigan. Solomon you might remember was mailed a thank you for showing up at the Michigan BBQ, an event which he didn’t attend. Not only that his name was spelled incorrectly on the thank you card. Holloman decomitted back in February and right now the Bulldogs of Georgia are the expected favorite to land his and Solomon’s services.

I expect Michigan to take a full class of 25 or more this recruiting cycle as Jim Harbaugh will look to cut some dead weight off the Brady Hoke years, and expect to see some of the current commitments replaced down the line by other names, as that is just how Harbaugh rolls as we saw last year in his first full recruiting cycle with the Wolverines.

Projection – Top 5 Recruiting Class

University of Maryland – Class Rank #17 – 16 Commitments

Probably one of the more surprising stories this year is the rise of the Maryland football program in recruiting. DJ Durkin was brought in last year to become the head coach, and it seems to be paying dividends for the Terrapins. They have it the DMV area hard and have some quality athletes to show for it. The class is headlined by 4-star defensive end Joshua Kaindoh out of the IMG Academy down in Bradenton, Florida. We said the DMV area was well represented and the other five 4-star recruits all hail from that area of the country. Deon Jones is a cornerback from Oxon Hill, Maryland and is the #3 athlete from the state of Maryland. Marcus Minor is an offensive guard from Hyattsville, Maryland and is the #5 athlete from Maryland. Kasim Hill is a pro-style quarterback and the #2 rated player out of Washington DC. Jordan McNair is a offensive tackle from Owings Mills, Maryland and is the #8 player from the state of Maryland. Finally Cam Spence is a defensive tackle, and the #3 rated player from Washington, DC. There are some immediate impact players in this group, and I expect Kaindoh and McNair to come in and battle for playing time right away.

Ohio State had offers out to a few of these kids. Kaindoh had a Buckeye offer and even visited the campus back in June. Can Spence and Jordan McNair also had offers from Ohio State, and both had crystal ball projections in for the Buckeyes, but alas they ended up going with the Terrapins. When McNair picked Maryland, Ohio State focused its attention on Wyatt Davis and when Cam Spence picked the Terrapins, the Buckeyes put all of their eggs in the Chase Young basket. I would say that both Maryland and Ohio State are very happy with the outcomes of these recruitments. Deon Jones and Ayinde Eley also had Buckeye offers, but were not really pursued hard by the coaching staff.

Some names to keep an eye out for for Maryland are 4-star linebacker Ellis Brooks for Richmond, Virginia who right now has an 81% crystal ball projection to the Terripans. Maryland is also in good standing with 3-star wide receiver Noah Igbinoghene from Trussville, Alabama and Tariq Castro-Fields from Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Both have strong crystal ball projections for Maryland currently. Probably the highest target left on Maryland’s board might be Joshua Paschal out of Olney, Maryland. Paschal is a 4-star defensive end and would pair really well with Cam Spence on that defensive line for years to come. Ohio State is also recruiting Paschal, but with the limited spots in their class, Maryland seems like a likely destination. Right now he sits at 40% crystal ball projections to Maryland and 20% each to Ohio State, Kentucky and Pittsburgh.

Maryland has suffered no decommitments so far in this recruiting cycle. That could change however as a lot of their prospects are highly thought of, and will continue to be recruited by the top programs all over the nation. Durkin and his coaching staff will have to do a really good job selling them that they will be taking this Maryland program back to some prominence if he wants to keep this top 25 class intact.

Expect Maryland to finish strong, and as long as they keep what they have and add a few other pieces this class should end well within the top 25 in February. If they are able to solidify this class and have a strong season in 2016, it could pay dividends down the road for Maryland recruiting.

Projection – Top 25 Recruiting Class

Penn State University – Class Rank #21 – 15 Commitments

Penn State is finally able to recruit like they have wanted to over the past 5 seasons since the scholarship reductions were put in place by the scandal that rocked Happy Valley in 2011. Last year they recruited 20 athletes and finished with the #20 class in the nation for 2016. This season James Franklin and his staff are recruiting hard again trying to rebuild the talent that they were unable to attract with limited scholarships his first few seasons.

Penn State has a solid class going right now for 2017 and it is led by pro-style signal caller Sean Clifford. Clifford is a 4-star recruit and the 6th ranked prospect in the state of Ohio. He has 18 offers to date, but has been committed since July of 2015. His pledge to the Nittany Lions seems firm and he will continue to try and help recruit top athletes to Penn State. Penn State does a good job of keeping a lot of local talent at home, or at least close to home by recruiting the Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia areas well while dipping outside of that area each year for a few select prospects. All of their 4-star recruits sans Clifford are from those areas and include CJ Thorpe, Yetur Matos, Jonathan Sutherland and Dylan Rivers. Thorpe is an offensive guard, and the other three will roam the defensive side of the ball. Of the 3-star athletes that have committed to Penn State, I really like Brelin Faison-Walden an outside linebacker from Greensboro, NC. He had 22 offers before deciding on Penn State back in July and the Lions are getting a good one as he is the 13th best prospect from the state of North Carolina.

In a rare occurrence, Ohio State was not in on any of Penn State’s current 15 commitments. Clifford and Michael Miranda are both from the state of Ohio, but neither were offered by the in-state program this year. Miranda is a 3-star offensive guard who comes in as the 23rd overall prospect in the state of Ohio.

Penn State still has a chance to finish strong, and the one guy to keep an eye on is 4-star defensive back Lamont Wade. Wade has been tied to Ohio State, Penn State and Pittsburgh for a while now, but the current crystal ball projections favor the Nittany Lions heavily right now. The only way I see him potentially ending up at Ohio State is if Shaun Wade decides to flip, opening up a spot for Wade. He wants to enroll in January, so something would have to happen sooner rather than later, and I believe in the end he picks Penn State. The Lions are in on a few other prospects that right now the odds don’t look favorable in Danny Davis, a WR out of Sprinfield, OH and Dalyn Wade-Perry, a DT from New Jersey. They have one current prospect that has a 100% crystal ball projection to them and that is 3-star cornerback Donovan Johnson from Cass Tech in Detroit.

Penn State also has not had any decommitments from this class, and unless something happens to James Franklin as the head coach, I don’t see that changing too much. If Franklin gets fired, then all bets are off and a mass exodus might begin.

I think that the Nittany Lions nab Wade and Johnson and add a few other late pieces to their class. They will look to take a full class so that they can back-fill from previous seasons of scholarship reductions and it will take a few years to get the talent back to where it was.

Projection: Top 25 Recruiting Class

Rutgers University – Class Rank #26 – 20 Commitments

0 – 5-Star

2 – 4-Star

18 – 3-Star

The Chris Ash era in Piscattaway New Jersey is underway, and recruits have taken notice of this former Urban Meyer protege. Ash may have a rough season in 2016 on the field, but his background and results while at Ohio State and Arkansas have shown that he can develop players for the next level. Like Maryland, Rutgers is a surprise so high in the recruiting rankings considering that the program has been down for so long. Ash is hitting the east coast hard and every one of his recruits hails from a state touching the coastline.

The class has two 4-star recruits in it and they are the highlight of this class. Micah Clark is the #2 ranked player in the state of New Jersey and the 18th ranked offensive tackle in the country. He is joined by Tyshon Fogg, the 6th ranked player from the state of Maryland and 15th overall outside linebacker. Clark was recruited by a lot of the top schools in the nation and was expected to take his visits to other schools this fall, but that appears to not be the case as he is recruiting hard for Rutgers and his brother Jamaal Beaty is also a commit for the class of 2017. Fogg had crystal ball projections to Stanford and Maryland before committing to Rutgers back in June. He has 28 offers listed, and he is a player to watch to see if he goes on any visits or if he remains a solid verbal to the Scarlet Knights.

Rutgers went to bat against Ohio State a few times in this recruiting cycle and came out victorious. We already talked about Micah Clark who included Ohio State when he cut his list to 15 back in January. He then attended junior day and then followed that up with an unofficial before committing to Coach Ash shortly there after in April. Bo Melton is another athlete that had an Ohio State offer that picked Rutgers over the Buckeyes and other programs. Melton is listed as a wide receiver and the 6th best athlete in the state of New Jersey.

Rutgers is still in the running for a few big names, including Markquese Bell a 4-star athlete out of Bridgeton, New Jersey. Bell right now has 64% projections based on crystal balls to Rutgers, followed by Michigan and Clemson. Ohio State is recruiting Bell as well, but again with the numbers as tight as they are, he will end up elsewhere. Other guys with high odds to select Rutgers are Romello Martin a 3-star defensive tackle and Harrison Hand a 3-star cornerback, both from the state of New Jersey.

Rutgers has one decommitment in this class and that is Darius Stills out of Fairmont, West Virginia. Stills committed to Rutgers on August 30th, and two days later decommitted and pledged to the Mountaineers of West Virginia. It will be interesting to see how Rutgers does this season on the field and if it has any effect on the recruits they have locked up so far. Hopefully Chris Ash can get them turned around and headed in the right direction.

Expect Rutgers to add a few pieces to their puzzle over the remaining months, but a huge get would be the wide receiver Bell to give them an outside playmaker for the future.

With the recent success of the Michigan State Spartan program under Mark Dantonio, you would think that the Spartans would be recruiting at a level even with a Michigan or an Ohio State. Dantonio has never really brought in the 5-star type kids, he brings in the 3-star kids and develops them into big time players like a Le’Veon Bell. While State is not recruiting as well as “Little Brother” right now, they are doing a good job of getting the right pieces for their team in place for the next 3-4 years.

Michigan State’s three 4-star guys are all on the offensive side of the ball in Kevin Jarvis (OG), Matt Dotson (TE), and Hunter Rison (WR). Jarvis hails from Illinois, and decided he wanted to leave home and head north. He is the 4th overall prospect in the state of Illinois and the 15th ranked offensive guard in the class of 2017. Matt Dotson was down to Michigan State and Michigan before pulling the trigger for the Spartans back in July. He is the 9th ranked tight end in the country and 12th ranked prospect from the state of Ohio. Hunter Rison is the son of former NFL great and Michigan State alum Andre Rison. Rison is the #9 prospect in the state of Michigan, and was heavily recruited by Oklahoma and some other top programs.

Rison and Dotson were the only two Spartans to have been offered by the Buckeyes. However, the Spartans do have quite a few prospects from the state of Ohio. Besides Dotson, they have Dominique Long a safety from Westerville, Ohio, Weston Bridges from Akron, Ohio, Matt Carrick from Massillon, Ohio, Josiah Scott from Fairfield, Ohio and Darien Clemons from Piqua, Ohio.

Michigan State is still in the mix for a few big name prospects including Donovan Peoples-Jones the 5-star wide receiver out of Cass Tech, and Ambry Thomas a 4-star cornerback from Detroit’s Martin Luther King. While both are seen as Wolverine leans, there is still an outside shot for each program to make an impression on them. The most likely to end up Spartans are probably Lynn Bowden a 4-star running back from Youngstown, Ohio and Tyler Johnson a 4-star tight end from Gilbert Arizona.

The only decommitment for the Spartans was Hunter Rison, who decommitted back in December only to recommit again in April.

I believe Michigan State will end up with a few gems late in the recruiting process, and will move up the rankings by February and finish with what will be a top 20 class when it is all said and done. Dantonio has things rolling in East Lansing, and I don’t expect it to fall off the tracks any time soon.

Indiana University – Class Rank #56 – 14 Commitments

Kevin Wilson finally got Indiana to a bowl game last year in his 5th season at the helm, and he is hoping he can continue the trend into the future by fending off Notre Dame and Purdue for Indiana’s best prospects. I’ve been to Bloomington, Indiana and there really isn’t a lot there, so enticing a high school kid to want to go play their football there is certainly a challenge for Wilson. He certainly has found some gems in the past few years from Shane Wynn to Tevin Coleman. Will he be able to do the same for the class of 2016?

Indiana doesn’t get many four of five star guys into their program, so they have to develop a lot of 3-star guys into reliable players at the collegiate level. With 13 3-star commitments verbally committed so far, it looks like the trend will continue. Their highest rated recruit is Derrius Mullins out of Columbus, Ohio. Mullins is a defensive tackle and is the 29th ranked player in the state of Ohio. Their highest ranked recruit from Indiana is Bryant Fitzgerald, an athlete that could play on either side of the ball, who is the 7th ranked player from the state of Indiana.

Ohio State and Indiana have not gone head to head on any recruits so far in this recruiting class that have given the Hoosiers their pledge, and I don’t expect that to happen this season or for that matter any time soon. Their only recruit from the state of Ohio is the above mentioned Mullins.

Some names for Indiana fans to watch for commitments from are R.J. Potts, who is a 4-star safety from Indiana and the 3rd ranked player in the state. He would be a huge get for the Hoosiers and they are battling Michigan, LSU and Notre Dame for his services. Indiana has 100% crystal ball projections for Kurt Rafdal (TE) and Keonte Jones (S) who are both 3-star guys from Indiana and Ohio respectively. A couple of guys from Florida are also 100% crystal balled to Indiana in Bobby Roundtree (DE) and Whop Philyor (WR).

Indiana has had a couple of decommitments and the one that stings the most is from Lynn Bowden who we mentioned above. He decommitted back in April, and would have been the highest rated recruit that Wilson and his staff would have had on board. Josh Johnson from Arkansas also decommitted back in March and he was a 3-star wide receiver that committed to Iowa State shortly after.

It would be a major win if Indiana could secure a top 50 recruiting ranking. If teams like Maryland and Rutgers can get some of these high level kids to believe in their program, then Indiana should strive for the same. I expect Indiana to end up with between 22-25 guys in this recruiting cycle and should see a lot more 3-star guys and maybe sneak in a 4-star as well.

Projection: Top 50 Recruiting Class

There is a Golden Hurricane connection with the Buckeyes.

Last week, I discussed Ohio State’s history with the Bowling Green Falcons. This week, it’s the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes’ history that gets the treatment of online real estate on Land-Grant Holy Land.

While the Buckeyes haven’t played the Golden Hurricanes on the football field, there are some connections between the two programs.

Ya boy, John Cooper

While John Cooper strolled into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, his illustrious career weaved through Tulsa, Okla. From 1977 to 1984, the main man on the Golden Hurricane sideline was Cooper.

Even though Tulsa didn’t get a chance to go to a bowl game, Cooper found success; he had four years in which he guided the Golden Hurricanes to a record of 8-4 or better. For real: Tulsa could compete with the big boys of college football with Coop. In 1982, Oklahoma State, who was part of the Big 8 (the predecessor to the Big 12), lost to Tulsa, 25-15. The following year, the gold and blue squad held close to the Oklahoma Sooners, but fell by 10.

When he left Tulsa for Arizona State, Cooper compiled a 56-32 record. Not too bad considering he was in the Missouri Valley Conference and was playing Big 8 programs throughout his time in charge.

Fun Fact: the current co-defensive coordinator for Tulsa, Bill Young, was an assistant under Cooper at Tulsa, and was a coordinator in Columbus when Cooper was head coach.

"Those fellows put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else."

Francis Schmidt, the man who said the quote above, was the forerunner to the coach-Tulsa-then-Ohio State-club. Going way back to 1919, Schmidt took control of the Golden Hurricanes after a 1-2 year from Arthur Smith. While he was only in charge for three seasons, Schmidt collected 24 wins, with only three losses and two ties.

After bouncing around to TCU and Arkansas, Schmidt found his way to Columbus, Ohio to coach the Buckeyes. At the time, Ohio State was coming off back-to-back seasons in which they lost to Michigan – to add insult to injury, both those losses to the Wolverines were shutouts.

When Schmidt took the job in Columbus, local press asked how the Buckeyes would defeat The Team Up North? His response was that "those fellows put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else." The quote must’ve inspired his squad, as Ohio State shutout Michigan in the first four years of the Schmidt era. Also, this is where the Gold Pants trinket originates from.

In a way, you can indirectly link Tulsa to the creation of the most prized possession for The Game.

Whoa, that’s a big ‘Shoe you have there...

Delving a little deeper into Tulsa’s history, there were some pretty neat oddities found within the game week press release from the Golden Hurricanes communication staff.

The first of which is that this week’s game with Ohio State will be the largest stadium Tulsa has played in. Ohio Stadium has a capacity just shy of 105,000; the largest stadium Tulsa was at prior to the showdown with the Buckeyes was 85,657 – last year’s contest with Oklahoma.

If you were to put the Golden Hurricanes student body inside The ‘Shoe, they would take a just a fraction of the South endzone stands. Tulsa has a student enrollment of 3,473; Ohio State has an enrollment that is well over 50,000. Ohio State also has the third highest student enrollment in the country for a public institution, while Tulsa has the lowest among FBS programs.

Ohio State and Tulsa also started football around the same time. In 1890, the Buckeyes kicked off their first season with a win against Ohio Wesleyan. Five years later, Henry Kendall College (now Tulsa University), started their football program with a fellow named Norman Leard as coach.

Conference collision

Over time, Tulsa has bounced around from different conferences: from the Missouri Valley, to being an Independent, to the Western Athletic Conference in the mid-2000s and now the American Athletic Conference.

Ohio State has had run ins with a handful of the Golden Hurricanes’ conference compadres. The Buckeyes carry a 28-3-1 record against current AAC members. Half of Ohio State’s wins against the AAC are against the Bearcats. Two years ago, the scarlet and gray defeated Navy, now in the AAC, in Baltimore en route to a national championship.
