A top recruit in 2018 ranks the Buckeyes high on his list.

Ohio State is entering a bye week following a terrific win this past weekend. While the players will have some time off, the Buckeye coaching staff is using this time to recruit. It is this dedication that has kept this program among the elites year after year.

Five-star S is big on the Buckeyes

With limited space in the 2017 recruiting class, Ohio State has started working on next year’s class. One of the prospects the Buckeyes seem to be most interested in is five-star safety, Jaiden Woodbey (Upland, CA / St. John Bosco).

Woodbey is regarded as one of the best players in his class, currently 247Sports has him listed at No. 26 overall. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound safety holds nearly 20 scholarship offers and that number will only increase in the next year.

Fortunately for the Buckeyes, Adam Gorney of Rivals.com reported Monday, that both Ohio State and LSU are the two programs “standing out most” to him right now.

2018 four-star ATH Jaiden Woodbey says #LSU and #OhioState are standing out most in his recruitment pic.twitter.com/XAXhNdp1wb

— Adam Gorney (@adamgorney) September 19, 2016

USC and Washington are also looked at as potential landing spots for the elite prospect.

Buckeyes building relationship with four-star WR

Ohio State has done a great job at bringing in blue-chip prospects at the wide receiver position of late. With top-five WRs Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) and Tyjon Lindsey (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) committed to the 2017 class, it seems the Buckeyes may have found a WR for 2018.

Brennan Eagles (Houston, TX / Alief Taylor) is a rather new name to the college football recruiting landscape. He emerged during spring and summer camps which led to scholarship offers from some of the country’s top programs, including the like of USC, Michigan State, Houston, Alabama and Texas.

While he hasn’t received an official scholarship offer from Ohio State yet, it seems the Buckeyes are still showing interest in the four-star prospect. Eagles spoke to Nick Krueger of RIvals.com over the weekend and told him that he has been building a relationship with Ohio State.

Eagles is a tall receiver but is lanky in size. He stands at 6-foot-4 and weighs 202 pounds. He is deceivingly quick on the football field and possesses the athleticism to jump up and make impressive catches. With more than a year left of high school football remaining, he has plenty of time to put on weight and become an elite red zone target.

Look for the Buckeyes to continue to show interest in Eagles and if the continue to like what they see, expect an offer sooner rather than later.

Buckeye Basketball busy recruiting

The Ohio State basketball coaching staff is busy on the recruiting trail as well. Andrew Slater of 247Sports reported that the Buckeyes visited four-star small forward Nojel Eastern (Evanston, IL / Evanston Township).

Ohio State's full staff had an in-home visit with 6'6" 4 @NEblessed_20 yesterday. West Virginia will be in today. pic.twitter.com/G4QphNIcry

— Andrew Slater (@ASlater247) September 19, 2016

Eastern is one of 247Sports top 70 players of the 2017 class and is seen as the third best player in the state of Illinois. Combined with 2017 center commit Kaleb Wesson (Westerville, OH / Westerville South), the Buckeyes would have a promising front court with the addition of Eastern.

Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, Michigan State is the favorite to land the 6-foot-6, 200-pound forward – and he is set to visit the school this weekend. However, there is still plenty of time for Matta and the Buckeyes to win him over.

Matta and the Buckeyes weren’t finished yet, though. Zach Fleer reported late Monday afternoon that the coaching staff would be attending Pickerington Central’s game Monday night to watch a couple of promising, young talents from Columbus in Jeremiah Francis and Sterling Manley.

Ohio State and Georgetown will be in at Pickerington Central tonight to evaluate '17 PF/C Sterling Manley.

— Zach Fleer (@ZachFleer270) September 19, 2016

Ohio State will also be evaluating '19 Pickerington Central PG Jeremiah Francis. Buckeyes have been in on Francis for years.

— Zach Fleer (@ZachFleer270) September 19, 2016

Francis, a three-star point guard, is the No. 2 overall player in the state of Ohio for the 2019 recruiting class. The Buckeyes are currently seen as the favorites to land him, as Fleer notes the school has been interested in him for years. However, the school is currently competing with West Virginia, Ohio University and Texas for his commitment.

Francis’ teammate Manley is a member of the 2017 recruiting class and has offers from programs such as West Virginia, Xavier, Creighton, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Pitt.

The 6-foot-10, 230-pound PF/C does not yet hold an offer from the Buckeyes, but following a good showing, one offer may follow. Make sure to stay with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest on all thing Ohio State recruiting.

usa-today-9553799.0.jpg

The Buckeye alum and 3 teammates raised fists in the air on Monday Night Football.

Before kickoff on this week’s edition of Monday Night Football, former standout Ohio State defensive back Malcolm Jenkins joined three of his Philadelphia Eagles teammates in raising their fists while the national anthem was played.

Jenkins, cornerback Ron Brooks, and defensive ends Steven Means and Marcus Smith all made the gesture, joining a rising movement of quiet protest that has engulfed the NFL’s discourse this season.

While the reasons for the protest begun by Colin Kaepernick have gotten muddied in conversations about the sanctity of the American flag, the American military, and various other tangentially related topics, Kaepernick made his own reasons for kneeling during the anthem—police brutality against black citizens, and other racial inequalities that persist in America—quite clear from the beginning. Jenkins is following suit.

Per SB Nation’s Jeanna Thomas, Jenkins told a radio show this week that “for me, it has nothing to do with this country or the flag or the anthem in itself...it's just to continue to push forward the conversation about social injustice, and that's a range of things from police brutality to wages and job opportunities, education.” Thomas reported that Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was aware of the players’ plan to raise their fists, and respected their decision to do so.

The gesture from Jenkins and his teammates seems especially pointed given today’s headline-making revelations regarding the death of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man recently killed by a Tulsa police officer after his car broke down on the side of the road.

Jenkins played football for Ohio State from 2005-2008. He won the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the country’s most outstanding defensive back, following his senior season. He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints and later signed with the Eagles.

The Buckeye Battle Cry has recently reached a milestone for the site. Over the weekend of the Oklahoma game, the Facebook page reached 10,000 likes. With reaching that milestone, we wanted to spend a little time interviewing the writers and editors of the Best Damn Website out there.

To get things started, I sat down and talked with Ben van Ooyen, Editor and Recruiting Guru here at The BBC. Ben has been a lifelong Buckeye fan, and has been writing about the Buckeyes for a few years now.

It was great getting to know another member of our team, for me personally, especially one that is the same age as I am, and who went through a lot of similar experiences with the OSU teams of the early 2000s when we both were in college.

Ben tells a great story of his experience after the 2002 National Championship Team, and I had to laugh because I can’t even imagine being at a campus bookstore the day after the Bucks brought home the trophy. And getting to hear the stories of what made him a Buckeye fan really helped bring back memories that even I had started to lose about that time.

As for current events, Ben picked the Huskers and Buckeyes to play for the B1G championship, with the Bucks winning. He also thinks Alabama, OSU, Louisville, and Houston/Michigan will make up the College Playoff this year.

Like a lot of people not based out of AA, Ben isn’t sold on Michigan this year just yet, but was really impressed with Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals.

As Ben says in his BBC bio: “Ben Van Ooyen is a graduate of The Ohio State University class of 2004. Ben has followed Ohio State sports for as long as he can remember, as his dad and his brothers all attended Ohio State and ingrained it into him at an early age how important it was. Ben has become a bit of a recruiting junkie over the past 10 years or so, and follow it religiously. He has written for Scout and for MotSaG in the past, and is happy to have joined tBBC as a recruiting analyst/editor! GO BUCKS!”

Thanks again to Ben for spending some time talking with me today. If you haven’t followed Ben on twitter, you are missing out on a wealth of knowledge, both on the play of the Buckeyes, and the recruitment of future stars of the Scarlet and Gray.

Yeah, they are that good.

“A 45-24 victory against Oklahoma served mostly as an introduction: Meet the new Buckeyes, same as the old Buckeyes--unless maybe they’re better.”

-George Schroeder, USA TODAY Sports

Any doubts about the unproven talent on the Ohio State Buckeyes squad have been officially nullified after an electric performance by many of the Buckeyes’ young stars on both sides of the ball, but perhaps none more so than sophomore receiver Noah Brown, who was expected to be a standout receiver last season prior to breaking his leg in fall camp. Brown’s four touchdown passes tie him for first all-time at Ohio State for receiving touchdowns in a single game, along with Dane Sanzenbacher, Terry Glenn and Bob Grimes, and his over-the-back touchdown catch Saturday is almost assuredly going to be one of the best catches of the 2016 season.

Alongside Brown, junior H back Curtis Samuel continued to deliver on what we saw in the first two games of the season, adding 98 yards and a touchdown on the ground and 20 yards receiving to his total.

But Brown and Samuel at least had seen the field prior to this season. Samuel backed Ezekiel Elliott for the last two seasons, and Brown caught a single pass in 2014 for nine yards against Illinois. However, the same cannot be said for all of the players in the roster. Of the 74 players who traveled to Norman for Saturday’s matchup, 30 were either redshirt or true freshmen last season. And while the team’s victories over Bowling Green and Tulsa were decisive, questions remained about how the group would react when faced with a quality opponent.

Now, however, the Buckeyes have defeated an Oklahoma team which was no doubt overrated prior to the start of the season, but still returns many of the key pieces of its playoff-contending squad from 2015. The disparity in talent was readily apparent Saturday, and evidence of Urban Meyer’s legendary recruiting prowess, enabling the Buckeyes to reload each season rather than rebuild on off-years.

“The Punter from Down Under averaged 50.6 yards per punt and allowed zero return yards on the night.”

-D.J. Byrnes, Eleven Warriors

Several Buckeyes have earned weekly honors following Ohio State’s decimation of Oklahoma Saturday, including Australian senior punter Cameron Johnston, who was named the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week. Johnston averaged 50.6 yards on five punts on the night, including a 68-yard effort following Ohio State’s first possession, which pinned the Sooners down at their own 11-yard line. All of Johnston’s punts landed inside of Oklahoma’s 20, providing a critical field position advantage for the Buckeyes as the Sooners started their drives at their own 11, 14, 12 10 and 1 yard lines following an Ohio State punt. Johnston, who has already graduated from Ohio State, currently leads the Big Ten in punting and is second in the NCAA. Last season, Johnston finished second in the conference with a 43.9 yard average on his way to being named a Ray Guy Award semifinalist for the second consecutive year. Johnston was also listed on this year’s preseason watch list for the award.

Alongside Johnston, junior quarterback J.T. Barrett was named to the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Great 8 list following his four-touchdown performance Saturday (Noah Brown earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors, having caught all four of Barrett’s touchdown passes). Barrett had 152 yards through the air on 14 completions and 74 yards on the ground as he led the Buckeyes to 3-0 in Norman. Barrett now has 10 passing touchdowns on the season, which is just one score shy of last year’s mark, with just one interception. He has also rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns so far this year.

“We want to take the approach that we want to get better every week. Once we get rolling, I feel like we’re going to be pretty damn good.”

-Ohio State safety Malik Hooker, via Brian Bennett, ESPN

As impressive as Ohio State has been thus far this year, the even more impressive thing is that they still have a lot of room to grow and improve throughout the remainder of the 2016 season. While some expected the matchup against Oklahoma to be a wake up call for the young team, many of whom were playing away from home for the first time in one of the toughest venues in college football, the Buckeyes showed few signs of weakness, earning one of the most impressive road wins this season in Norman.

The Buckeyes did not allow a single offensive touchdown this season until well into the first quarter Saturday. Already, Ohio State has outscored its opponents a whopping 170-37, including four touchdowns on defense on nine total interceptions--all against teams ranking in the top 25 FBS for total offense in 2015. The defensive secondary has been especially surprising. After losing Eli Apple, Darron Lee and Tyvis Powell to the NFL, Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore and Damon Webb have been outstanding against the pass. And it turns out that this group is deeper than expected. After the loss of cornerback Gareon Conley--the only returning starter from 2015 in the unit--Denzel Ward proved he was more than up to the task.

And they are still learning.

The few errors noted on offense, including receivers lining up in the wrong formation, false starts and delay of game penalties, are sure to improve as the season goes on and the inexperienced units continue to gel, especially with the upcoming bye week.

With the win over Oklahoma, Ohio State now has a 20.6 percent probability of winning out the season, behind only Alabama. Despite tough tests against Wisconsin, Michigan State and Michigan at the tail end of the season, the Buckeyes can continue to build on their impressive start and improve even more throughout conference play.

The Ohio State University women’s volleyball team (10-2), 19th in the nation polished off a trifecta in Muncie by taking the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge over the weekend with a powerful performance which wrapped up the 2016 non-conference schedule by downing the host BSU Cardinals in straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-14).

Valeria León dug 3.78 balls per set in three OSU sweeps to claim Tournament MVP honors. Teammates Audra Appold and Taylor Sandbothe joined her on the all-tournament team. Seniors León and Sandbothe have earned all-tourney honors in three of four weekends this season, each named MVP once.

The Buckeyes ended this current road trip with an attacking .452 ratio against Ball State. This was set into motion with Appold’s .500 hitting percentage on a dozen kills. Taylor Hughes averaged 12 assists per set, connecting with Sandbothe for a match-high 15 kills. Ohio State’s defensive front put forth eight blocks, including five stuffs from Madison Smeathers.

Four Buckeye blocks came in the second stanza. Smeathers participated in each of them. The blocking clinic was displayed by 15 kills, 14 digs and two service aces – formulating a 25-17 OSU winner. The first 20 points were equal before the Buckeyes rode into complete dominance and took 15 of the next 22 rallies for the triumph.

The Big Ten season begins Sept. 23-24 when the Buckeyes travel to Wisconsin and Minnesota. Let’s prepare for another fun and successful season. Go Buckeyes.

See you there.

Punter-150x150.jpg

The awards are starting to trickle in for the dominant all-around performance on Saturday Night in Norman. On Monday morning, three outstanding Buckeye players were given prestigious awards.

Baker Earns Top Defensive Honors in B1G

For a guy who was supposed to be a back-up, Jerome Baker really made his presence known on Saturday night as he recorded seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, and had an interception which he promptly returned for a touchdown. Just watch the video below and pay close attention to his acceleration after he catches the ball. For his effort, Baker earned B1G Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors with Jabrill Peppers.

Brown Earns Top Offensive Honors in B1G

Through two games, we have all been waiting for that Noah Brown break-out game. For the better part of one and a half years, every coach and player has been talking about how good Noah Brown was but it had yet to really translate into actual production at Ohio State until Saturday night…then the break-out game occurred. Even though the passing game was moved to the back burner with the running game’s success, Brown was very productive catching five balls for 72 yards and four touchdowns.

Johnston Earns National Award

The Australian super hero Cameron Johnston had an amazing game on Saturday and was rewarded with the Ray Guy National Punter of the Week Award. Johnston had five punts and averaged 50.6 on those kicks. Even more amazingly, all five of his punts were downed or fair caught inside the OU 15 yard line. The biggest punt came on his first punt. Oklahoma had just driven all the way downfield and missed a field goal. OSU went three-and-out and was punting from deep in OU territory…the crowd was going wild and things could have gotten out of hand with a bad punt or big kick return. Johnston responded with a 68 yarder which gave OU the ball at the 11 and completely flipped the field.

usa-today-9547916.0.jpg

The Buckeyes’ defense basic-ally destroyed Oklahoma.

Wow. Just wow:

  • Ohio State finally allowed an offensive touchdown. BUT, thanks to a Jerome Baker pick-six, the Silver Bullets are still up 24 to 23 against the offenses from Bowling Green, Tulsa and Oklahoma. This is impressive.
  • Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine (the all-time single game rushing leader) has averaged 112 yards on 18 carries with 1.4 touchdowns per game in his career. Saturday he had 60 yards on 17 carries and zero touchdowns, an average of just 3.5 yards per carry. This is bad.
  • Baker Mayfield had a historic performance on Saturday. He set several single-game career lows including: third-lowest completion percentage, most interceptions, second-lowest quarterback rating and the second-lowest yards per attempt average. As Mayfield said himself, “We got our asses kicked.” #Basic.

It turns out inexperience doesn’t matter a whole lot when it comes with overwhelming speed and talent. Ohio State beat up Oklahoma for 60 minutes this past Saturday and the 45 to 24 final actually seems a bit misleading. Let’s take a look at three of the more impressive plays from the blood bath in Norman.

Maybe Jerome Baker should be starting?

Nothing against Dante Booker, who has missed the past two games with an MCL sprain, but Baker has absolutely balled out the past two weeks. Against Oklahoma he had seven tackles, 1.5 sacks and another one-handed interception which turns into a 68-yard return for a touchdown:

Oklahoma had five offensive linemen to block just three Buckeyes, but defensive end Jalyn Holmes was curiously forgotten and managed to tip Mayfield’s quick pass. Baker was spying Mayfield to prevent a scramble, but instead wound up with the ball and a wide open path to the end zone. He nearly scored against Tulsa on a fumble recovery and demonstrates just how deep Ohio State is at linebacker. For his efforts Baker was named co-Defensive Player of the Week with Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers*. Even if Booker reclaims his starting spot, Baker has a bright future ahead and is just a sophomore.

*Friendly reminder: Peppers is extremely far from a bad player, but he does have as many collegiate interceptions to this point as LGHL’s fearless leaders, Luke Zimmermann and Matt Brown.

Marshon Lattimore is now tied for the Big Ten lead in interceptions...with teammate Malik Hooker

Both Lattimore and Hooker have more interceptions than half the Big Ten. Seriously. Maryland, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State and Illinois have two interceptions each this year. Lattimore could’ve had another one on Saturday, but either the ball hit the ground of the refs just couldn’t fathom how a cornerback is capable of making such an unreal diving catch. Either way, the interception he did have was a thing of beauty:

Nick Bosa allowed Mayfield to break contain, but still made him uncomfortable enough to cause a deep throw across his field. Lattimore was in such good position it seemed as if the pass was intended for him and he once again showed some nice open field moves on his way to a 21 yard return. He’s now intercepted 30 percent of ball thrown his way in 2016 and may be counted on as the Buckeyes’ No. 1 corner if Gareon Conley misses any time with his apparent shoulder injury.

HOLY DENZEL WARD

After Conley went down, it was Ohio State’s fastest player Ward who stepped up. Norman is a long way from The Shoe, but I’m fairly certain this hit was heard all over Columbus:

Mayfield’s pass was on target to his tight end, but it didn’t matter because Ward can apparently run like a receiver but hit like a linebacker. The play was made even better thanks to Ward standing and flexing over the fallen Sooner. Ohio State puts a lot of pressure on quarterbacks thanks to their tight coverage, but the secondary is also more than capable of laying down the boom when necessary. Ward won’t play too much on defense unless Conley misses some time, but you can always see him on making plays on kickoffs. He’s usually the first guy down the field.

The final: 45-24, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Jerome Baker

Defensive play of the game: Jerome Baker pick-six

Next victim: Rutgers. Enjoy the bye week, see you all on the other side.

The Buckeyes’ homecoming game will air on BTN.

A lot of Ohio State’s 2016 schedule’s kick times are already out in the ether. Especially compared to most of the rest of the country, it’s far more trivial to plan out your football Saturdays as a Buckeye fan, than say, one of the Texas Longhorns, who have no set game times after the month of September.

OSU continued to add to their transparency Monday, announcing that Oct. 1’s homecoming game against former Ohio State defensive coordinator Chris Ash and Rutgers will be set for a noon kickoff. The game will air on the Big Ten Network.

Rutgers has certainly seen their fair share of early season struggles after getting blown out by Washington. The Scarlet Knights needed a halftime come from behind victory against a bad FCS team in Howard and then had to come back from a sizable deficit again vs New Mexico, a team that had lost to New Mexico State a week prior.

While the Buckeyes should cruise -- expect them to be as much as three score betting favorites — perhaps no one knows OSU’s tendencies better than one of their former coordinators. Be sure to check out the university’s official homecoming hub for all the details on everything else going on that week.

Jerome Baker’s big game against OU leads to a B1G honor.

Ohio State’s defensive staff prides itself on rotating in a number of talented athletes, but an injury to junior linebacker Dante Booker gave sophomore Jerome Baker an opportunity to start on Saturday against the Oklahoma Sooners, and he took full advantage. His standout defensive performance helped propel the Buckeyes to a 45-24 victory in Norman.

On the strength of seven total tackles, including one and a half sacks, and an interception return for a touchdown, Baker was named the co-Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the first such honor of his career.

His pick-six was one of two interceptions for the team on the game, upping the Buckeyes’ season total to nine, which is tied with Cincinnati and SMU for the most in the FBS. His 68-yard interception return is the fourth pick-six of the year for the Buckeye defense, which already matches the single-season school record for interception returns for a touchdown (1987 and 1996).

The last Ohio State Defensive Player of the Week came on November 9th of last year when safety Vonn Bell took home the honor. Baker shares this week’s accolade with Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers.

Congrats to Jerome on an honor well-deserved.
