Also, Hoosiers is overrated.

It was closer than most expected, but after Saturday the Buckeyes are now 5-0 with two wins coming against the Big Ten East. Their 21-point victory over Indiana is nothing to be embarrassed about (especially considering the Hoosiers just beat Michigan State), but the execution on both offense and defense simply wasn’t as phenomenal as it was in the first four games. With that said, the defense still looks like one of the better groups in the country. A few notes on the group:

  • It took five weeks, but the offenses of Bowling Green, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rutgers and Indiana have finally outscored the Ohio State defense. It was fun while it lasted.
  • Still, the Buckeyes have allowed four offensive touchdowns this season — the fewest in the country.
  • Indiana rushed for 99 yards on 40 carries. The interior of the Buckeyes’ defensive line has continued to play great despite entering the season as arguably the largest question mark on the team.

Now let’s take a look at the plays that helped Ohio State notch their 21st-straight win over the Hoosiers.

Jerome Baker may not start, but he’s one of the best players on the field.

Starting linebacker Dante Booker has now missed four consecutive games with a sprained knee. Baker has done everything in his power to seize the starting job in his absence. He’s second on the team with 26 total tackles, has 3.5 tackles for a loss and was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after he had seven tackles and a pick-six against Oklahoma. Baker was all over the field again versus the Hoosiers and displayed his unnerving speed on the run below:

The Indiana right guard attempted to cross in front of Baker to slow his pursuit, but Baker did an excellent job at staying lateral until he was able to explode through the hole and get to the running back. Linebackers are often asked to get downhill in a hurry, but this can sometimes leave them exposed to the mess around the line of scrimmage. By Baker staying lateral in his initial pursuit he was able to avoid the mob of offensive lineman and get a clear path to the ball carrier. From there all he had to do was make the tackle and run around shaking his head in disbelief that the offense would test him.

Nick Bosa, you are already a beast.

Perhaps Joey Bosa felt the need to play so well in his NFL debut because of the show he saw his little brother put on the day before. The Buckeyes have slowly played Nick Bosa more and more as the season has gone on, but if he keeps dominating the way he did this past Saturday, it’s going to be hard to justify ever taking him off the field

Ohio State didn’t even have a linebacker within seven yards of the line of scrimmage on this play. Considering the Indiana quarterback read and thus “blocked” Tyquan Lewis, the Hoosiers had six blockers to account for just three Buckeyes. This massive numbers advantage still couldn’t get Indiana positive yardage, as Bosa decided to not only drive the pulling tackle straight into the turf, but also to keep his feet and make a play on the ball carrier. He presents many of the same problems his brother did from the three-technique position, namely: he’s an explosive monster with the strength to overwhelm almost any offensive lineman. Look for Bosa to earn a starting spot sooner rather than later.

Just when you thought teams stopped testing Malik Hooker...

It took awhile, but Hooker made his way onto the highlight reel with maybe his most ridiculous interception return yet:

Considering Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow was wearing #21, it was only a matter of time before he threw an interception. After perfectly anticipating a crossing route, Hooker snagged the ill-advised pass and proceeded to break four tackles on his way to the end zone. Unfortunately, a questionable chop block wiped away the touchdown, but it was refreshing to see Hooker prove once again that quarterbacks with a number above 19 have no business testing the Buckeyes’ secondary.

The final: 38-17 Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Tyquan Lewis (five tackles, two TFL, one forced fumble)

Defensive play of the game: Malik Hooker interception

Next victim: Wisconsin. See you all next week.

The Buckeyes are also ranked at No. 19 in the USCHO poll.

After stunning No. 3 Denver and dominating, despite losing to Air Force, the Ohio State men’s hockey team has risen from the receiving votes category to No. 15 in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and No. 19 in the USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll.

The Buckeyes were projected by the Big Ten coaches to finish second in the conference this season and have looked solid so far in trying to demonstrate that respect was well earned. It should be noted that the team they lost to in a sudden death shootout did beat now No. 6 (in the USCHO poll and No. 9 in the USA TODAY poll) Boston College.

OSU will look to rise even higher in the rankings when they play Saturday at unranked Miami University, who has received votes in both polls. The Buckeyes lost both of their early season matchups to the instate rival RedHawks last year and will look to avenge both of those while staying in the polls.

That they played so well this weekend without giant contributions from Nick Schilkey, David Gust or Christian Frey in both games says a lot about the team’s potential and it’s not out of the realm of possibility anymore that they could fulfill their early season buzz and challenge Michigan for second in the Big Ten after all.

Week six of the college football season is over which means we are at the halfway mark. We have folks that don’t know anything about college football especially when you hear things like a certain player from UM. Dear Walmart fans when you are averaging 1 solo tackle for each of the last two games you aren’t the best defensive player on your team. Let’s see how the midseason is shaping up, by the way, the Big Ten isn’t as good as we had hoped or thought.

1.The Ohio State University Buckeyes (5-0, 2-0)

140 Pts.

ohiostate-150x150.jpg
Yes, there looked like Buckeyes had issues against Indiana. None of it was coming from the defensive side of the ball which allowed the Buckeyes to remain unanimous again this week.

Last Week: Defeated Indiana 38-17

This Week: @Wisconsin

2. Michigan Wolverines (6-0, 3-0)

130 Pts.

michigan-150x150.jpg
Hooray Michigan is now .500 at Rutgers. Way to go beat up on a weak team to make one think you deserve to be Number 1 and you have a Heisman candidate. I guess when you have decades of being irrelevant it takes one year to scream from the flat roofs of the Walmarts to say y’all are good.

Last Week: Defeated Rutgers 78-0

This Week: Bye

3. Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-0, 2-0)

116 Pts.

nebraska-150x150.jpg
What can you say about a team that was had a bye this past week? Just be happy you’re behind UM because if it was vice versa we would be getting pelted from the produce department.

Last Week: Bye

This Week: @Indiana

4. Wisconsin Badgers (4-1, 1-1)

111 Pts.

wisconsin-150x150.jpg
Badger fans you lost to Walmart so the choice here is easy I guess. Sorry but a real test is coming to Camp Randall hope you took the extra week to prepare.

Last Week: Bye

This Week: Ohio State

5. Indiana Hoosiers (3-2, 1-1)

84 Pts.

indiana-150x150.jpg
Hey Hoosier fans, you do have a defense. It’snot Walmart great but it is much improved and watching Buckeyes struggle with it at times should have given you all a good feeling. Make sure when you play Walmart to bring that defense again because I am calling for the upset.

Last Week: Defeated by Ohio State 17-38

Next Week: Nebraska

6. Penn State Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-1)

82 Pts.

pennstate-150x150.jpg
Guess James Franklin’s seat cooled off some. Finally beating a team they should have.

Last Week: Defeated Maryland 38-17

This Week: Bye

7. Maryland Terrapins (4-1, 1-1)

80 Pts.

maryland-150x150.jpg
Terps just need two more wins to become bowl eligible. I think they have a great shot at winning at least three. Get ready Maryland because you should be bowling this season.

Last Week: Defeated by Penn State 17-38

This Week: Minnesota

8. Iowa Hawkeye (4-2, 2-1)

77 Pts.

Not sure what to say about this team. After six games still, have no clue who they are.

Apparently, we were giving you all to much credit. I am sorry, no more dilly bars for you. Time to get your act together.

This Week: @Maryland

10.Northwestern Wildcats (2-3, 1-1)

51 Pts.

A bye week helped stabilized the Wildcats at the cusp of the truly bad Big Ten teams.

This Week: @Michigan State

11. Michigan State Spartans (2-3, 0-2)

49 Pts.

michiganstate-150x150.jpg
Dear Sparty, Your run of being a Top Ten team in the nation is over. I will let that sync in for now. Next week we can discuss the possibility of zero bowl games.

Last Week: Defeated by BYU 14-31

This Week: Northwestern

12. Purdue Boilermakers (3-2, 1-1)

30 Pts.

purdue-150x150.jpg
Can Darrell Hazell get three more wins to get his team bowl eligible? There is an outside shot but don’t hold your breath.

Last Week: Defeated Illinois 34-31

This Week: Iowa

13. Illinois Fighting Illini (3-2, 0-2)

20 Pts.

illinois-150x150.jpg
Folks in Champaign should be happy they aren’t the Scarlet Knights currently.

Last Week: Defeated by Purdue 31-34

This Week: @Rutgers

14. Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-4, 0-3)

10 Pts.

rutgers-150x150.jpg
Um, so when you average 100 yards total offense two weeks in a row that is a serious problem. Have faith it will get better when the right players show up.

Last Week: Defeated by Michigan 0-78

This Week: Illinois

Most of the draftees are off to a great start.

After leading the Ohio State baseball program to a Big Ten tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament, six Buckeyes had their names called in June's Major League Baseball draft. Those players have just recently completed their first stints in the minor leagues, with varying degrees of success.

Outfielder Ronnie Dawson was a second-round pick of the Houston Astros, No. 61 overall, after an All-American junior season in scarlet and gray. In 70 games for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the short-season Single-A New York-Penn League, the Grove City native slashed .225/.351/.373, hitting 13 doubles and seven home runs, driving in 36 runs, and stealing a dozen bases. Dawson showed great improvement after a horrendous start, raising his batting average nearly 50 points and his on-base and slugging percentages nearly 30 points in his final 40 games, and is currently part of the Fall Instructional League for the Astros in Arizona.

Behind Dawson on the Ohio State draft board was fellow junior outfielder Troy Montgomery, who went in the eighth round to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Montgomery earned a promotion from rookie ball to full-season Single-A after posting a .341/.453/.557 slash line for the Orem Owlz. With the Burlington Bees of the Midwest League, his numbers fell against tougher competition, as he slashed .261/.340/.401 in 38 games. For the year, Montgomery finished with 10 doubles, four triples, seven homers, 30 RBIs, and 13 steals, and is also in Arizona for Fall Instructional League on the Angels roster.

In the 19th round, Jacob Bosiokovic was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the 560th overall pick, and after being assigned to the Boise Hawks of the short-season Single-A Northwest League, he handled himself well. Bosiokovic appeared in 68 games, slashing .274/.380/.419 with 20 doubles, four home runs, 27 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases, and was named to NWL's midseason and postseason all-star teams. He's currently in Arizona as part of the Rockies' Fall Instructional League program.

Left-handed reliever Michael Horejsei was next off the board, going to the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round with the 626th pick. After a tremendous start with the Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer Rookie League in which he did not allow a run in his first eight appearances, Horejsei was promoted to the Class-A Kannapolis Intimidators. The Cleveland St. Ignatius product continued his success there, posting a 1.32 ERA, .194 batting average against, and 1.02 WHIP in 15 appearances, striking out 30 and walking just nine, and earned a trip to Arizona on the White Sox Fall Instructional League roster.

Following Horejsei in 23rd round was 2016 co-captain Nick Sergakis, who was taken with the 700th pick by the New York Mets. Playing for the short-season Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League, Sergakis continued to play his scrappy brand of ball, slashing .252/.353/.364 with 10 doubles, two homers, 15 RBIs, and 11 steals in 38 games played, and played solid defense at both second and third, committing just five errors in 166 total chances.

The last of the six Ohio State players drafted in 2016 was standout starting pitcher Tanner Tully, who was selected in the 26th round by the Cleveland Indians with the 782nd pick. Tully, much like Horejsei, enjoyed a good deal of success in his first taste of pro ball. Pitching for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League, the lefty started seven games and appeared in an additional six out of the bullpen, posting a 4-1 record with a 1.17 ERA. Tully held opposing hitters to a .192 batting average and sported 0.89 WHIP in 46 innings, striking out 26 and walking a mere nine. The Indiana native is now in Arizona as part of Cleveland Fall Instructional League.

Nothing new here, folks.

The Ohio State Buckeyes had some trouble through three quarters, but were able to hold off the Indiana Hoosiers Saturday for a 38-17 win. The win kept the Buckeyes at the No. 2 spot in the latest AP Top 25.

The Buckeyes are down to just two first-place votes after having six last week. Michigan came in at No. 4 yet again this week, with Wisconsin moving up to No. 8, and Nebraska at No. 10.

Urban Meyer’s team had some trouble in the passing attack. J.T. Barrett had just 93 yards through the air, but windy conditions likely had a lot to do with that.

It was fine, though, as the Buckeyes ground attack more than made up for the lack of passing. Barrett, Mike Weber, and Curtis Samuel combined for 290 rushing yards, with Barrett leading the way at 137.

This upcoming week, the Buckeyes will travel to Madison to face the Wisconsin Badgers, who have had a pretty good year and played Michigan close a couple of weeks ago.

The head coach knows the Buckeyes will face one of their toughest opponents of the season Saturday.

Urban Meyer took the podium Monday, just days after a 38-17 win over Indiana. The Hoosiers were a formidable opponent for this young Ohio State, and gave them plenty of issues on offense. Now, the Buckeyes are looking toward one of their most difficult tests this season, a night game against the Badgers in Wisconsin. ESPN announced that College Game Day will also make their way to Madison for the Big Ten showdown.

  • Meyer came out early discussing the struggles in the throwing game on Saturday against Indiana. He noted, that the weather wasn’t bad enough to affect J.T. Barrett’s game, and that he doesn’t expect these issues to continue.
  • The coach noted issues from misfired passes, dropped balls and bad route-running as contributing to the ineffective offense Saturday. Meyer did say that “urgency is always good,” and that it’s better to be proactive than reactive, and take on a slew of adjustments following a win rather than a loss.
  • He expanded on his comments from the post-game Saturday that Barrett is a bit of a security blanket for the team. Meyer notes that they need to spread around the responsibility, and not solely rely on the quarterback.
  • Meyer also spoke about how he heard comments that they didn’t hand the ball to Curtis Samuel enough against Indiana, and he agreed.
  • On Nick Bosa’s big fourth down stop, Meyer said the entire defensive line is walking around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center like they are the kings of the hill. Following a big play like Bosa’s, Meyer said peers respect you, get rewarded and wait for the next mission.
“Typical Wisconsin”

  • Meyer did not downplay the difficulty of this week’s matchup, noting they’re facing “typical Wisconsin”, going back to Coach Alvarez, and that the Badgers are “one of the best coached teams” in the country.
  • Some of the things Wisconsin boasts is a specific niche, an average height of 6’6/6’8, have an excellent running back and efficient pass game. The Badgers also have maintained a very similar defense despite changing coordinators.
  • Meyer concluded that “the leadership deserves a lot of credit” at Wisconsin. The players play hard and are very well-coached (especially on defense) and it’s been that way for a long while. “They should be” proud of the culture they’ve developed at Wisconsin.
  • The head coach isn’t too concerned that Wisconsin had an extra week to prepare, coming off a bye, but does have some reservations about having two night games, on the road, in back-to-back weeks.
Players of the game

Offense

Jamarco Jones and Pat Elflein are the only offensive players who graded out as a champion in Week 5.

Defense

The defense “played outstanding”. Meyer named five defensive lineman and three corners as champions of the game. With the Defensive Player of the Game being Tyquan Lewis.

Special teams

Parris Campbell was being compared to Evan Spencer and the role he had at Ohio State. Campbell had a 92-yard kick-off return Saturday, and was “all over the place, in terms of things we ask him to do”.

The Buckeyes finally get another point guard.

After missing out on a few other targets, it looks like Ohio State has the point guard they’ve been looking for. According to multiple reports, 2017 PG Braxton Beverly has committed to Ohio State.

Braxton Beverly has committed to Ohio State per @HargravePGHoops

— Brian Snow (@BSnowScout) October 10, 2016

Beverly, a three-star prospect out of Hazard, KY, had offers from George Washington and Miami (OH) (where he had previously committed), but was attracting interest from programs like Alabama, Western Kentucky, Butler, and West Virginia.

Beverly was also a teammate of current Buckeye Derek Funderburk at Hargrave Military Academy.

— Josh Moore (@HLpreps) January 20, 2016

At 5’11, 170 pounds, Beverly isn’t the bigger guard that Thad Matta has liked to recruit in recent years, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have skills. Here, he scored 70 points in a high school game, which is difficult to do, against any level of competition.

Beverly is Ohio State’s second commit for the class of 2017, joining four-star big man Kaleb Wesson. He should provide additional depth at point guard, especially if JaQuan Lyle decides to leave Ohio State early for a professional career.

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

5-Star WR Has Great Visit:

The big visitor for the Indiana game was 5-star wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones out of Cass Tech in Michigan. The Buckeye offense sure didn’t do themselves any favors in showing off the passing game for a possible future target, only completing nine passes on the day. Peoples-Jones got the red carpet rolled out for him for his visit including talking to AD Gene Smith and President Drake among other people.

Although it is likely that Peoples-Jones ends up at Michigan when all is said and done, per Jeremy Birmingham at Landof10.com, he isn’t tipping his hand on where his recruitment stands. Birm spoke to a source within Ohio State who said it was hard to get a read on where things stand with him at this time, but a source close to Peoples-Jones said that the Buckeyes were at least in the Top 3 at one point in time.

The Buckeyes do have a small contingent of Cass Tech players on their roster including starting running back Mike Weber who spoke to Cleveland.com after the game about getting Donovan to come to Ohio State.

The Buckeyes did everything they could on Saturday to show what kind of program Ohio State is, and I am sure Urban Meyer and Zach Smith met with him to discuss how he could be a difference maker for this recruiting class along with Trevon Grimes and Tyjon Lindsey. Will it be enough to sway Peoples-Jones from the state up north? We can only wait and see what happens from here on out.

Cleveland Heights Duo Visit:

Tyreke Smith and Jaylen Harris were both on campus this weekend as well on unofficial visits to see the Buckeyes take on the Hoosiers. Smith, a 4-star defensive end, spoke to 11W about his visit.

“It was great,” Smith said. “I was very impressed with the defense.”

Smith currently holds 13 offers from the likes of Penn State, Michigan State and Maryland. He is looking to get back on campus sometime this fall and he said he will certainly be in attendance for the Michigan game if not before that.

Jaylen Harris is a 4-star wide receiver, who many have considered a Buckeye lean over the past few months. The main question that has come up is, is there enough room for Harris in this class? If you read last Friday’s HatS, then you know he spoke to Cleveland.com and said that they would find a way to get him in if indeed he wanted in. While I don’t think that Peoples-Jones ends up a Buckeye, I think if Jaylen Harris wants in that he would be a mighty fine addition for the 3rd wide receiver in the class of 2017.

Someone needs to explain to me why I should be ticked off over a 21-point win over the new-and-improved Indiana Hoosiers.
Ohio State gave up nothing on the ground, and was only modestly challenged in the air. On offense the Buckeyes rushed for nearly 300 yards after abandoning the passing game due to an ineffective J.T. Barrett.
I hear criticism galore of the play calling and can’t figure out why. Barrett was 4 of 9 for 41 yards in the first half and only attempted 12 more in the second half.
He missed badly on a pair of wide-open receivers and it wasn’t long after that the coaches tied his arm behind his back and made him focus on the run.
Had the situation been the opposite, if they couldn’t run the ball, I guarantee co-offensive coordinators Tim Beck and Ed Warriner would have put the ball in the air more.
It’s strategy. It’s in-game adjusting. It happens in other sports.
In basketball if a zone defense is getting eaten alive, the coach goes man-to-man. And if a team is getting manhandled in the paint, the coach goes zone.
Play to the strength of the day.
Maybe Barrett shouldn’t have called his own number so much on the read option, and Coach Urban Meyer admitted Curtis Samuel needed more touches.
But I can’t fault them for keeping the ball on the ground as long as it was working, which it was. Indiana knew it was coming and still couldn’t stop it.
There was absolutely no reason to throw the ball more than they did. Too many bad things can happen on the field and between the ears when a passing game sours.
And being able to pound out nearly six yards per carry to me is a tell-tale sign that airing it out was not necessary.
Barrett completed just five passes in the decisive second half. He simply was off his game. It doesn’t happen a lot. But it did.
I credit Beck, Warriner and perhaps Meyer for recognizing it and not forcing the ball in air.
IU is a team the OSU backups could beat, so there was no reason to do anything more than necessary to win.

There has been mixed response regarding the outcome of the Ohio State-Indiana game Saturday.

Some didn’t like what they saw. Others were OK with it.

Regardless it was a win. But was it a win that included everything we all wanted to see?

Scott
A win: Obviously.
No false starts: Still looking.
No injuries: Haven’t heard anything.
Air Buckeyes: Grounded.

Ben
Play well: The run game and offensive line played great. JT Barrett wasn’t at his best throwing. The defense gave up some passing yards but that was mainly because IU couldn’t run the ball.
JT TD: Closing in on the record.

WVa
Don’t let history repeat itself: Not a total nail-biter but the Hoosiers continue to play OSU tough.
Slow start will be deadly: It wasn’t the start like they had at Oklahoma, but it wasn’t deadly for the Buckeyes either. Credit Indiana.
Keep the crowd in it: It was quiet at times but the crowd came alive at the right moments. Still saw some empty seats in the corners of C Deck where I sat as a student.

Brandon
A win: Yay.
No injuries: I think we all escaped
Domination: On the ground and defensively, yes. Air Barrett needs work.

Mike
A victory: Not sure IU put the fear of God into Buckeyes again but it wasn’t a total domination.
A clean game: Not quite. Close though.
100-yard receiver: Nope.
