Weekly the Good, the Bad and the Ugly that is Ohio State football and items from around the nation in sports. I round up the big three and bring a few of my closest friends to confirm or deny!

Rumblin’

"If I went to another school I saw myself sitting on the couch watching OSU win a national championship without me." https://t.co/0fPyDdzlaP

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) October 3, 2016

I have lived a pretty long and happy life and there have been times during my fandom life that I just knew a certain player was going to be special when they came along. As a young lad and new Ohio State fan I knew Archie Griffin would become an immortal. I also knew when Eddie George came along in spite of a brief bout with fumbleitis he too would be special in Ohio State running back lore.

The same feeling came over me the first time I saw Troy Smith take the field and I had the same inclination with JT Barrett. The young man is doing something playing for Ohio State that’s never been done. Let that sink in for a second because they have had some gunslingers. Hoying and Germain come to mind and Troy Smith was no slouch throwing the football either.

When you take into consideration that he has also only started 21 football games in Columbus, that makes the success even more astonishing. When it’s all said and done, JT Barrett will be the greatest all-time quarterback in Ohio State history. I for one am looking forward to watching the rest of the show.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Rumblin’

Scott – The Buckeye offense. Doesn’t matter who is touching the ball. Good things happen.

JC – JT & the offense. This includes the entire unit, from the line, to the receivers, to Mike Weber, and of course Curtis “everything” Samuel. They are turning into the juggernaut we know they are capable of being …. Just gotta keep an eye on Warriner & Beck … with this talent they should dominate everyone on the schedule (Yep! That’s right – I said it!)

Mike Meals – I loved the message I got from Brandon this week “Man, you were so right about Mike Weber” because I know everyone here in Buckeye Nation loves Weber, but watching him develop from week to week, things that you can see instead of just the reports of him having a good week of practice just warms my heart. He’s not even close to the top of his skill level, but his development has been wonderful.

Ben – Minus the first quarter against Rutgers, the Buckeye offense is running at an all-world pace. #1 in total offense, and #1 in scoring offense in the nation. The defense is doing its part as well being #1 in total defense and scoring defense. It is a good time to be rooting for the Buckeyes right now.

Brandon – The entire Ohio State team. Quick, think of a weakness on the team…if you struggled to think of anything you probably just settled on kicker. This team is playing at an extremely high level right now. Each player knows there is someone nipping at their heels and they are fighting every play to stay on the field. Think about their season so far. On offense; they are averaging 57 ppg, 576.25 yards per game, 332 rushing yards per game, 244.25 passing yards per game, and are scoring almost seven offensive touchdowns per game. On defense; they are giving up 6.25 points per game (not counting pick six and kick return), 235.5 yards per game, 140.25 passing yards per game, and 95.25 rushing yards per game.

— Indiana Football (@HoosierFootball) October 2, 2016

I had a pretty good topic in mind after the weekend, but I honestly had a change of heart after reading the fellas below.

What in you know who’s name is going on in East Lansing and Iowa City? The most recent COTY’s are having a tough time winning games that they should have won easily. I have a hard time believing it’s all coaching but that is where the responsibility lies for sure.

Both teams are lacking true play makers and in a recent quote from Rutger’s head man Chris Ash he said that it’s basically night and day between Iowa and Ohio State right now. After the loss to Northwestern I would concur.

Sparty just proved that if you let Indiana hang around you will be in trouble and Ohio State is very familiar with that and will have to keep the pedal to the medal this Saturday. Both of these teams have a chance to recover from their stumble but time will tell if that happens soon.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Stumblin’

Scott – Sparty. I’ve said since Furman MSU is overrated. Should have never been ranked that high.

JC – MSU & Iowa. They are both so overrated…just like the Sooners were.

Mike Meals – Penn State’s kickoff kicker, #99. If you want to go down the field and try to act tough for a tackle, playing a little flopping b*tch when you get hit is weak sauce. And the B1G officials, who ejected the Minnesota player? You’re close to being in the same boat as the kicker.

Ben – Wisconsin’s offense is a stumblin’ mess. When will they actually recruit a quarterback that can play (Russell Wilson doesn’t count). When teams know you can’t throw the ball downfield, they are going to stack the box against Corey Clement and that will be the ballgame. I went from mildly worried about this game to somewhat concerned after last week.

Brandon – I’ll say it, it’s time for universities to not worry about being loyal to assistant coaches who are liked by the team. Being liked is not an indication of being a good head coach. Big time programs around the nation(especially USC) continue to hire home-grown type of coaches and are constantly flabbergasted on why their program is suddenly garbage. There are going to be numerous big time coaching positions open in a few months and numerous big time coaches being fired. If schools like Purdue and Minnesota want to take football seriously…they better get ready to bring in guys like Les Miles and Charlie Strong.

Bumblin’

Les Miles is gone. LSU also fired Cam Cameron, promoted Ed Orgeron to interim head coach. https://t.co/NHhrvMartV @brettmartel

— AP Top 25 (@AP_Top25) September 26, 2016

The ugly this week is the really ugly and it’s sad to see the professional game filtering down to college athletics. It is really sad to me that a college fired a coach just to have the opportunity to hire Tom Herman. I have a problem with this because he is still coaching his current team in Houston.

Now there’s word out of Texas that the longhorns have already informed coach Charlie Strong that he is gone at the end of the season. The trouble with that is that there is no guarantee their boosters money will mean anything to Herman. Why would he even want to leave Houston now that he is turning them into a power house and getting an invite to the Big 12.

LSU and Texas aren’t the only ones doing these types of things in hopes to get Herman and any other up and coming coach as Herman isn’t the only one working wonders in college football right now.

Let’s see what the staff has to say about the Bumblin’

Scott – ACC officiating. ‘Nuff said.

JC – The mindless numbnuts up north, the roadkill-eating chromosome-lacking neanderthals who assumed a resurrection of their “little” pie in the sky equated to the hiring of the booger-eating Jimbo. They will discover soon enough that bedding down with Satan isn’t always the path to eternal bliss. But, hey, I am a Buckeye, so who cares?

Mike Meals – Every team in the country who wants to potentially hire Tom Herman to be their next head coach. If you want to keep the respect and potentially get the hottest coach on the market, you would find a way to keep the questions your coach and Herman is getting to a minimum. I love speculating, and that’s what all of us do, taking a (semi) educated guess at his spot next year, but it’s not fair to the kids on his team or yours, and the coaches on his staff or yours, to keep bringing these up.

Ben – Florida State is a bumblin’ mess right now. After they had their huge come from behind win against Ole Miss in the first game of the season, everyone had crowned them the 2nd best team in the country and all they have done since then is get blown out by Louisville and then last week lose on a 54 yard field goal from Seminole slayer Nick Weiler. Jimbo Fisher might want to head to LSU as his defense is atrocious.

Brandon – As I mentioned before, I married into a Sun Devil life which has brought me the joy of having a second team to watch late Saturday night…which ultimately becomes Sunday morning TV. Today, I’m coming at you Sun Devil defense. They have become an absolute joke back there and not one player knows how to wrap up when they tackle…it reminds me of the 2013 Buckeyes but with a quarter of the talent. On the season, they are giving up 35.6 points per game. Even more impressive, they are giving up a staggering 503.8 yards per game…with almost 400 of that coming through the air. Have some discipline…don’t worry about the big hit…just make a tackle.

B1G-Championship-150x150.jpg

There were definitely some shockers this week in B1G play. The headline game was of course Michigan vs Wisconsin but the biggest story came from Michigan State and Iowa both taking a tough loss. This coming week, the big game looks to be Indiana at Ohio State after the Hoosiers win at home against Michigan State. Out west, the Iowa at Minnesota game will all but eliminate one of those teams from winning the B1G West.

Illinois (1-3 overall, 0-1 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Nebraska, 16-31. Illinois was leading the Cornhuskers 16-10 in the fourth quarter before they surrendered 21 straight points to take a tough loss. Quarterback Wes Lunt was unable to get anything going as he only threw for 133 yards and zero touchdowns. The Fighting Illini could only manage 270 yards of total offense.

This Week: Illinois is home against Purdue. This game can be seen on BTN at 3:30 pm.

Indiana (3-1 overall, 1-0 conference)

Last Week: Beat Michigan State, 24-21. A week after losing to Wake Forest in football, the Hoosiers pulled off the stunning upset against the Spartans. After allowing Michigan State to tie the game up with 11 seconds left, the Hoosiers came out in overtime and finished the job with a Griffin Oakes 20 yard field goal. Richard Lagow threw for 276 yards and two touchdowns and Devine Redding added 100 yards on the ground. Ricky Jones was the leading receiver for the Hoosiers with five catches for 124 yards and a touchdown. The Hoosier defense gave up 438 yards to Michigan State.

This Week: The Hoosiers travel to Columbus to take on the red-hot Buckeyes. This game can be seen on ESPN at 3:30 pm.

Iowa (3-2 overall, 1-1 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Northwestern, 31-38. A week after struggling with Rutgers, the Hawkeyes once again struggled with a bottom-of-the-barrel conference opponent. C.J. Beathard was sacked six times on the day as he threw for only 204 yards and one touchdown. The usually stout running back combo of LeShun Daniels and Akrum Wadley struggled to get anything going as the combined on 31 carries for 107 yards but did come up with three touchdowns.

This Week: The Hawkeyes travel to Minnesota. This game can be seen at noon on ESPN2.

Maryland (4-0 overall, 1-0 conference)

Last Week: Beat Purdue, 50-7. Don’t look now but Maryland is 4-0 and playing some pretty decent ball. Sure their wins have been against Howard, Florida International, UCF, and Purdue but if Twitter had taught me one thing it is to ignore stats and facts. Maryland used ten different players to rush for 439 yards and four touchdowns. Ty Johnson led the attack with 204 yards on only seven carries.

This Week: Maryland travels to Penn State. This game is at noon on BTN.

Michigan (5-0 overall, 2-0 conference)

Last Week: Beat Wisconsin, 14-7. The #SeptemberChamps closed out their September championship with an impressive win over Wisconsin at home. To be honest, I really thought Michigan would win by 21 plus points. I watched this entire game and all that I can say is this…I can’t wait for November. I don’t see how people are so high on the Wolverines. Michigan managed 349 yards of total offense versus the stingy Badger defense. The Wolverines again struggled to run the ball as they only had 130 yards on 44 carries. Wilton Speight added 219 yards and a touchdown through the air.

This Week: Michigan travels to New Jersey to face the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. This game can be seen on ESPN at 7:30 pm.

Michigan State (2-2 overall, 0-2 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Indiana, 21-24. The biggest surprise of this young season has been the complete ineptitude of Michigan State. I don’t think anyone could have imagined them having two losses at this point and one of them not being to Notre Dame. Tyler O’Conner had a decent bounce back game as he threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns in the losing effort.

This Week: Sparty looks to rebound as they host BYU in a non-conference game. The game can be seen at 3:30pm on ESPN.

Minnesota (3-1 overall, 0-1 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Penn State, 26-29. This was a tough loss for Minnesota as they went ahead with 53 seconds left in the game after an Emmit Carpenter 37 yard field goal. The Golden Gophers would then go into the dumbest thing in sports, the prevent defense, which allowed the Nittany Lions to drive 53 yards downfield in 47 seconds to kick the game-tying field goal. In overtime, the Gophers would kick a field goal and the Nittany Lions scored a touchdown for the win. The running duo of Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks would combine for 204 yards on 37 carries and one touchdown. Mitch Leidner added 241 yards through the air and one touchdown.

This Week: Minnesota hosts Iowa in what could be a B1G West elimination match. This game can be seen at noon on the ESPN2.

Nebraska (5-0 overall, 2-0 conference)

Last Week: Beat Illinois, 31-16. The Cornhuskers needed 21 unanswered fourth quarter points to put away the sometimes pesky Fighting Lovie Smiths. Running back Terrell Newby had a great day on the ground running for 140 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Tommy Armstrong continues to be consistent as he threw for 220 yards and two total touchdowns on the day.

This Week: Bye Week.

Northwestern (2-3 overall, 1-1 conference)

Last Week: Beat Iowa, 38-31. After not scoring more than 24 points in a game all season, the Wildcats had an offensive explosion against the usually stout Hawkeye defense. Using a balanced attack (164 passing/198 rushing), Northwestern was able to score 21 straight points in about nine minutes of game time in the third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach. The Big Ten leading rusher Justin Jackson had 171 yards on 26 carries on the day. Clayton Thorson added three touchdowns through the air.

This Week: Bye Week.

Penn State (3-2 overall, 1-1 conference)

Last Week: Beat Minnesota, 29-26. As I spoke about before, the Golden Gophers left the door open for Penn State and the Nittany Lions pulled off the big win against Minnesota. Trace McSorley had his best game of the year throwing for 335 yards and rushing for 73 yards while adding two touchdowns. Saquon Barkley struggled to get anything going as he only rushed for 63 yards on 20 attempts. Free Safety Marcus Allen had an amazing day racking up 22 tackles (8 solo/14assist).

This Week: The Nittany Lions host Maryland this week on BTN at noon.

Purdue (2-2 overall, 0-1 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Maryland, 7-50. Purdue struggled mightily offensively and defensively. On offense the Boilermakers only managed ten yards rushing on 27 carries. Throwing the ball was not much easier as they only threw for 195 yards on 53 pass attempts. Think about that for a second, they averaged 0.4 yards per rush and 3.7 yards per pass attempt. There is not much positive Darrell Hazell can spin out of this performance. Defensively, they gave up 496 yards to the Terrapins with 439 of those bad boys coming on the ground.

This Week: The Boilermakers will travel west to take on the Fighting Illini. This colossal match-up can be seen at 3:30 pm on BTN.

Rutgers (2-3 overall, 0-2 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Ohio State, 0-58. As you all know already, Rutgers struggled to get anything going against the Buckeyes. They were outgained in yardage 669 to 116. Chris Laviano completed three passes in the first six plays of the game and would not complete another pass for the entire game. Tylin Oden would come into the game for Laviano and he would not complete any passes. For the day, the Rutgers passing attack was 3-16. Robert Martin, who led the B1G in rushing entering this game, also struggled as he only managed 40 yards on 13 carries.

This Week: Rutgers hosts Michigan at 7pm on ESPN2.

Wisconsin (4-1 overall, 1-1 conference)

Last Week: Lost to Michigan, 7-14. The Badgers ran into a buzz-saw in the Wolverine defense as they only managed 159 yards for the day. Alex Hornibrook really struggled on the day throwing three interceptions and only managing 88 yards on 25 attempts. His arm strength has to be a major concern for the Badgers. If he starts against Ohio State in two weeks, I foresee a few pick-sixes. With no help from his offensive teammates, the Wolverines were able to focus on Corey Clement and he was held to 68 rushing yards. Defensively, the Badgers were tough as they had four sacks, six tackles-for-loss, five pass break-ups, and one interception.

This Week: Bye Week.

CURRENT STANDINGS:

LGHL Martell continues to recruit for Ohio State

Martell continues to recruit for Ohio State

usa-today-9578771.0.jpg

The Bishop Gorman QB has become the Buckeyes biggest recruiter.

When Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) committed to Ohio State this past summer, the Buckeyes didn’t just add the country’s No. 2 dual-threat QB to their top-rated recruiting class, the team also added an elite recruiter.

Martell, a four-star QB in the class of 2017, has already been one of Ohio State’s most important recruiters, helping bring in two top-five wide receivers. Martell helped convince his current teammate, four-star WR Tyjon Lindsey, to join him in Columbus and he is also one of the key reasons the Buckeyes were able to add five-star WR Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) to the class, too.

The high school senior doesn’t seem to be finished. Somehow, Martell has been finding time between his last year of academics and football to reach out to his peers across the country. All of this in an effort to help make his freshman class one the best in Ohio State’s history.

Martell spoke with Rivals after his team’s impressive victory over Grimes and St. Thomas Aquinas Friday, and brought up multiple players he is determined on getting to join him in Columbus, including two more of his current teammates in 2017 four-star safety Bubba Bolden and 2018 four-star outside linebacker Palaie Gaoteote. Both are currently viewed as Ohio State leans.

Outside of Bishop Gorman, Martell wants to add 2017 five-star running back Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton) to his list of weapons at Ohio State. Akers has the Buckeyes listed as one of his top 10 schools and is the favorite to land him.

Elite Buckeye targets set to visit Michigan

Two elite Ohio State targets will be visiting the Buckeyes’ arch-rival Michigan this weekend as the Wolverines take on Illinois, including one of the Buckeyes biggest remaining recruits in the 2017 class, Jay Tufele (South Jordan, UT / Bingham).

Tufele has taken his time in his recruitment process, as this will be his first official visit. The four-star DT has the Buckeyes listed in his top seven schools, and the school will likely earn an official visit from the blue-chip prospect. Because he has been taking his time, it is tough to determine which direction Tufele is leaning and his visits will likely play a large role in his decision. Right now, though, the money is on either Ohio State or Oregon.

Along with Tufele will be 2018 tight end Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NY / Lindenhurst). Ohio State will more than likely not add a TE to its 2017 class and because of this, has already shown plenty of interest in Ruckert.

The four-star TE attended the annual Friday Night Lights camp during the summer and is currently a heavy favorite for the Buckeyes. However, Ruckert still has two more years of high school remaining, and he already holds 25 offers from prestigious schools like Alabama, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Notre Dame, Florida State, Tennessee, UCLA, LSU and Miami.

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes will have to continue to express interest in these two players, if not just to ensure them not playing at Michigan.

Ben van Ooyen has this unique look at Rutgers

“On Rutgers

The Buckeyes host Rutgers this Saturday for Homecoming weekend. The Scarlet Knights enter the game with a 2-2 record, but their loss against Iowa last week cost them more than a 3-1 start. They also lost Janarion Grant and Quanzell Lambert, their leaders on offense and defense, respectively, for the rest of the season.”

The week before, in their squandered upset attempt against Iowa he was quoted as saying – of the Buckeyes (in the Shoe at that) “…was a different animal.”

JC Collingsworth gets the lowdown on the women volleyball team’s big win

“The Ohio State University Women’s Volleyball Team, ranked nationally at # 19, this past Saturday (Oct., 1st), beat the nations’ #1 team, Nebraska, in Lincoln.

The Buckeyes head home from Lincoln with a victory for the third consecutive time (2012, 2014, & now 2016). The most recent victory snaps Nebraska’s 28-match winning streak dating back to last season and marks the fourth win for Ohio State over the Cornhuskers in the last five meetings.”

LGHL Ohio State's J.T. Barrett could have a shot at the Heisman

Though Lamar Jackson has the early vote on lock down, Barrett’s play could help him keep pace.

"It’s October, and so far it feels like the Heisman Trophy race is between two people: Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett."

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Even with a loss to now-No. 3 Clemson Saturday, Louisville sophomore quarterback Lamar Jackson’s Heisman hopes have never been higher. He threw for nearly 300 yards and a touchdown (with one pick) in addition to gaining 162 yards and two touchdowns on the ground on 31 carries against the Tigers. On the season, Jackson has thrown for 1625 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions, with 688 yards and 14 more touchdowns on the ground. And while Jackson has split his premier matchup games with a win versus Florida State to balance the loss to Clemson, he has one more shot against sixth-ranked Houston for another signature win coming up in November.

Other contenders at this early stage include Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, Houston quarterback Greg Ward, Jr. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey, and while it seems unlikely that any of these players will be able to catch up to Jackson without Jackson himself falling off, Ohio State’s own J.T. Barrett may be in the best position to do so. Barrett has averaged a 68.8 completion percentage on the year, throwing for 14 touchdowns with two picks, and rushing for three more touchdowns. He may not have the exciting plays of Jackson, but there is little doubt as to his ability to score points, having just broken Bobby Hoying’s record for career passing touchdowns at Ohio State.

Perhaps Barrett’s biggest detriment is that the Ohio State offense is extremely balanced, relying on playmakers beyond Barrett to score. H back Curtis Samuel, for instance, who is considered by some a dark horse for this year’s Heisman, is No. 5 in yards from scrimmage in Division I, averaging 168.3 yards per game. And freshman running back Mike Weber, while certainly out of the Heisman talk, was Big Ten freshman of the week following an outstanding rushing performance against Rutgers.

"There’s some people on this team who have been personally affected by this, so it’s definitely an important matter but as of us taking a stand, it will be a team thing. And as a team, there wouldn’t be anybody who would decide differently."

-Ohio State junior forward Jae'Sean Tate, via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

In light of protests of the national anthem--especially in the NFL--to bring awareness to racial injustice in the U.S., Ohio State Buckeyes junior forward Jae’Sean Tate has said that whatever the Buckeyes do, including whether to protest or not to protest, will be decided as a team. Tate was the emotional leader of Ohio State last year on a team that missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008, and which was plagued by a slew of transfers both during and after the season.

Tate says that he has an opinion on the subject of racial injustice, and that his coaching staff, including head coach Thad Matta, would be behind him should he choose to share it. And while Tate, at this point, has not made any direct comments on the subject, he has retweeted a number of relevant posts, which protest violence and demand equality. Especially given the shooting death of 13-year old Tyre Kind in September, Tate commented that the subject is something the entire team has been thinking about. He said that several team members have been personally affected by this problem, owing to the need to respond together as a team.

Tate and the Buckeyes are certainly not alone in college basketball in their views. Last week, Virginia point guard London Perrantes posted a photo of his entire team kneeling at half court, and encouraging others to use their platform "to help create change. TOGETHER."

Ohio State is scheduled to open its 2016-17 campaign against Navy in the 2016 Veteran’s Classic on Nov. 11, which falls on Veteran’s Day.

"Outside of the fact that we’re in this very strange year, I’m not seeing anything unusual. In fact, it’s probably remarkable that sports is holding up as well as it is."

-Artie Bulgrin, ESPN senior vice president of global research and analytics

With a massive drop off for many of the once-premier sporting events in the country, media executives are wondering where, exactly, did all of the viewers go? After years of growth, two of the NFL’s chief weekly games--Sunday Night Football on NBC and Monday Night Football on ESPN--have both taken double digit dips in viewership in the opening weeks of the season, shedding light on the fact that the issue is not isolated to either cable or broadcast alone.

While the presidential race has garnered significant attention, likely drawing viewers away from their respective sporting events (the First Presidential Debate took place during last week’s Monday Night Football game between the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints), the trend has seemed to pervade most sports, and has included regular season games as well as major annual events.

Even the Summer Olympics were not exempt, with viewership down double digits compared to the 2012 London games. Sunday Night Baseball, NASCAR and UFC also experienced significant declines, as well as the finals for both the men’s and women’s U.S. Open tennis finals and the finals of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Still, other sports--including NBA basketball, college football and the PGA Tour--experienced viewership increases this calendar year. And in 2015, 93 of the top-100 programs on television were live sporting events (compared to 14 in 2005).

Of course, the decrease in TV viewership does not necessarily mean that less people are watching sports, but perhaps that they are watching on different platforms. NBC’s total viewership for the Olympics, for example, combined both TV and online viewers, and viewers can watch Thursday Night Football directly through Twitter.

The Ohio State Buckeyes women’s volleyball team has Nebraska’s number, defeating the top-ranked Cornhuskers in Lincoln for the third consecutive time and snapping Nebraska’s 28-game win streak which had dated back to the 2015 season. The Huskers had been the only remaining undefeated team in Division I prior to the match. With the win, the 19th-ranked Buckeyes improve to 12-4 on the season, including 2-2 in the Big Ten, while Nebraska falls to 12-1.

Ohio State had previously won in Lincoln in 2012 and 2014, and the most recent victory was the fourth in the last five meetings between the two schools. The squad is now 4-3 all-time in

Lincoln, and the Buckeyes are the only Big Ten school without a losing record (4-4) versus Nebraska since the latter joined the conference in 2011. This win is also the first road win over a top-ranked team in school history. Coincidentally, Ohio State defeated No. 1 Minnesota 12 years ago to the date (Oct. 1, 2014) in four sets in Columbus.

After losing the first set 17-25, the Buckeyes rallied to win the next three 25-21, 25-21 and 25-13 behind strong performances from sophomore Taylor Hughes, who led the Buckeyes’ rally in the second set, and senior Taylor Sandbothe, who recorded 12 kills and two blocks in the match. Sandbothe is now second all-time at Ohio State in career blocks with 481. Junior Luisa Schirmer led the team with 16 kills on the day.

Next up, the Buckeyes are scheduled to play No. 18 Michigan State Friday evening before heading to Ann Arbor Sunday to face No. 22 Michigan. Ohio State is scheduled to once again play Nebraska at home Oct. 14.

CFBTOP10-150x150.png

Welcome to a new weekly feature on The Buckeye Battle Cry, my “doesn’t count for anything” top 10 poll. Each week after digesting the college football games that were I will come here and put together my top 10 teams in the nation. After week 5, let’s see how I think things stand.

1.) Ohio State – 4-0 – Next Week @ Indiana

The Buckeyes move to #1 in my latest poll, not only because they are my team, but because they have done the most on the field so far this season. The Buckeyes rank #1 in the nation in scoring offense, total offense, scoring defense, total defense, defensive touchdowns and red zone defense among other stats. The team is firing on all cylinders right now and they look to keep the momentum rolling as they travel to Bloomington this weekend to take on the Hoosiers.

2.) Alabama – 5-0 – Next Week @ Arkansas

The Crimson Tide didn’t do anything to deserve a drop in the rankings as much as Ohio State did to jump them. The Tide rolled last week against Kentucky 34-6 behind another strong performance by true freshman Jalen Hurts. The Tide travel to Arkansas this weekend in what will be one of the marquee games to watch. Arkansas is ranked 16th in the AP Poll and comes in at 4-1 with their lone loss to top 10 team Texas A&M. This will be a challenging game for Saban and company, can they continue the path towards the College Football Playoff?

3.) Clemson – 5-0 – Next Week @ Boston College

No doubt the biggest win over the weekend belongs to the Tigers who outlasted Louisville 42-36 in Death Valley. Deshaun Watson showed why he is a Heisman Trophy candidate and although the defenses didn’t really show up much at the end, this game was an instant classic. The Tigers have an easy week this weekend as they travel to Boston College to take on the Eagles who haven’t won an ACC game in nearly two years. This should be a statistic padding game for Watson, and the Tigers should have their starters out by the middle of the 3rd quarter.

4.) Washington – 5-0 – Next Week @ Oregon

I don’t think anyone outside of Washington expected to see what happened on Friday night against Stanford. The Huskies dominated every facet of the game, and shut down the always dangerous Christian McCaffrey to only 79 yards. Jake Browning is going to get some Heisman consideration if he continues to play at the level he is with 17 TD’s and only 2 INT’s on the season with a 71% completion percentage. The Huskies travel to the always dangerous Eugene to play the Ducks this weekend. Oregon is having a tough go of it this year, but with their skill you can never really discount them.

5.) Michigan – 5-0 – Next Week @ Rutgers

Yeah… I am still not impressed with Michigan. They played a decent Wisconsin team and pulled out the win at home. The Wolverines have not had to travel so far this season, and that will change this weekend as they go to New Jersey to play Rutgers. I fully expect the Wolverines to be undefeated going into their match-up with Michigan State on October 29th, and realistically they should be undefeated when they travel to Columbus for The Game in November.

6.) Houston – 5-0 – Next Week @ Navy

Houston beat up UConn last week to exact revenge on last years lone loss to the Huskies. Greg Ward Jr. accounted for five touchdowns to lead the Cougs to a 42-14 thumping. Houston shouldn’t really be tested until they play Louisville in Novemeber, but don’t discount the Navy Midshipmen who they play this week. Navy’s option can give teams fits, and as an Ohio State fan I am fully aware of how frustrating it can be to play this type of team. Unless something major happens, expect Houston and Louisville to play for a potential playoff birth later this year.

7.) Texas A&M – 5-0 – Next Week vs Tennessee

The Aggies are my surprise team of the week. They have four quality wins against UCLA, Auburn, Arkansas and South Carolina already this season. They are led by former Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight who doesn’t have all-world numbers, but he is getting the job done. Their offense is loaded with skill players like Christian Kirk and Trayveon Williams along with Josh Reynolds. Hopefully A&M doesn’t get out to a 21 point lead on the Volunteers this weekend, or we know what the outcome of that game will be.

8.) Louisville – 4-1 – Next Week Idle

Yeah, Louisville lost to Clemson. However, they played some great football and came up just short of pulling off the win in Death Valley. Lamar Jackson looked a little human in the first half, but then came alive in the second showcasing why he is still the front runner for the Heisman after five weeks. He threw for nearly 300 yards and ran for another 162 and three total touchdowns (bringing his season total to 28). Louisville has a pretty easy schedule until their potential top ten match-up with Houston in November.

9.) Nebraska – 5-0 – Next Week Idle

It hasn’t been pretty every week for the Huskers, but they have managed to get the job done every week so far. Their win against Oregon isn’t looking as good since the Ducks have decided to fall apart, but they are still undefeated and should remain so until they play Wisconsin and Ohio State in back to back games in late October-early November. Senior Tommy Armstrong is completing passes this year at a better percentage than any of his other seasons so far, and he has accounted for 14 total touchdowns for the Huskers. They are off this week, but travel to Bloomington in two weeks.

10.) Miami – 4-0 – Next Week vs Florida State

Mark Richt has to be happy with how things are going in South Florida right about now doesn’t he? With Georgia not having a great season so far, and the Hurricanes off to a 4-0 start under junior Brad Kaaya, things are moving in the right direction for Richt and the Canes. While they haven’t played anyone of note so far, they will be tested this week against a pretty down Florida State team coming off a last second loss to North Carolina. If the ‘Canes can navigate themselves through October unscathed then they will be sitting pretty for a shot at the ACC Championship and a birth in the Playoff.

Who needs turnovers when you give up zero points?

It turns out that Rutgers is who we thought they were. The Buckeyes’ 58-0 annihilation wasn’t quite enough to hit the over, but it was enough to let the rest of the Big Ten know that this year’s team won’t be satisfied by winning their games by “merely” a few touchdowns. A quick few notes on the defense:

  • Saturday’s game was technically a tie as far as the Ohio State’s defense is concerned. That’s good enough for another week, as the Buckeyes’ defense is still up 24 to 23 against the offenses from Bowling Green, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Rutgers.
  • Rutgers completed three passes on Saturday and averaged more yards per rush than they did per pass. They only averaged 2.2 yards per rush. This is not good.
  • The Ohio State defense is No. 1 in the country in total yards and points allowed. Call me old-fashioned, but who needs DVOA when we can keep it to the two most simple defensive statistics ever invented?
  • There are better spots to test the Buckeyes’ defense than downfield...opposing quarterbacks are just 2-for-19 for 58 yards and four interceptions on passes 20-plus yards downfield this season.

There were plenty of great individual performance against Rutgers, let’s take a look at a few:

Attention Big Ten: Quit trying ridiculous trick plays against Ohio State

Last year it was Illinois who failed miserably on an attempt flea flicker, though this year’s ill-advised trick play is just as horrendous:

Rutgers pic.twitter.com/AaBYl8cOdh

— Steve Palazzolo (@PFF_Steve) October 3, 2016

Trick plays are great when they are executed properly, but this play appeared to never have a chance from the start. The running back tosses the ball to the wide receiver, who appears to be expecting a hand off, who then proceeds to blindly toss the ball to no one. Ohio State didn’t even really get much backfield penetration, but managed to cause the 17-yard loss anyways. It’s clear Rutgers would have to take a few chances in order to have a chance against the Buckeyes, but those chances should probably be better practiced before being displayed to the world on BTN.

Robert Landers is emerging in the interior of Ohio State’s defensive line

Landers was just a three-star recruit out of Wayne high school, but he is balling out as a red-shirt freshman. The loss of Tracy Sprinkle was a huge blow to the Buckeyes’ defensive line, though the recent play of Landers has the unit’s trajectory headed back to a positive direction:

After smoothly swimming past the Rutgers’ lineman, Landers has to fight through a chip from the tight end, but is strong and athletic enough to fend off both blocks and get to the quarterback. The Buckeyes have an abundance of edge rushers in Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes; however, these edge rushers cannot get sacks unless the interior linemen are able to push the pocket and not allow the quarterback to step up. Landers did an excellent job of this all afternoon and managed to rack up two tackles for a loss. There’s already one Buckeye who is supposed to shrug after a sack, but maybe Landers could take after Flanders and give the crowd a happy wave after doing his business.

Speaking of Tyquan Lewis...

Lewis’ two sacks this season ties him for the team lead with Nick Bosa. Assuming Bosa is still on a mission to finish what big bear started, we could see a pretty great competition emerge for Ohio State’s sack leader. Both players got to the quarterback once against Rutgers, with Lewis showing excellent bend before he throws the Rutgers’ quarterback to the turf like a rag doll:

Though the silver bullets didn’t record any turnovers on Saturday, they were consistently in the backfield and racked up three sacks and seven tackles for a loss. If the defense continues to prevent big plays and forces offenses to attempt to drive the length of the field, look out, because this unit is loaded and playing at a very high level.

The final: 58-0, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Robert Landers

Defensive play of the game: Robert Landers sack

Next victim: Indiana. See you all next week.

There are teams that put up good statistics and then there is the 2016 Ohio State Buckeyes. Through one-third of the regular season, the No. 2 Buckeyes (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) are putting up numbers that are off-the-chart great. For example, the Buckeyes ...

There were some pretty good highlights from the match-up with Rutgers over the weekend and the staff was on point with each category! Let’s see what they have to say about the weekly awards.

Offensive

tOSU Offensive MVP

Congratulations JT! https://t.co/2OTDqO1pJG

— Mike Meals (@mmeals) October 1, 2016

New at tBBC: The Captain Breaks All-Time Ohio State Passing Touchdowns Record https://t.co/3H4sd0Zu0d

— The BBC (@The_BBC) October 1, 2016

Scott – JT. He makes the offense go.

WVa – It is a tie for me with JT and Weber Jr. The fact that JT had the record setting day overshadowed one of the best days by any running back in Ohio State history by Weber. He is picking up his feet and that is making teams whiff on him.

Ben v. – JT Barrett. Without him who knows where this offense would be. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: There isn’t a more polished quarterback in this class at running the read option. He rarely if ever makes a bad decision running or passing, although we did see his second interception of the year on an iffy throw.

Brandon – Joe Thomas Barrett. It wasn’t the fact he combined for 284 yards and four touchdowns…it was his ever-steady presence on the field. This guy is the engine to this unstoppable offense and is the biggest key to them being successful.

JC – I want to say Weber because of his 144 yards in only 14 carries. The kid did show his salt on Saturday. But I have to say JT. He simply had his way – plain and simple. And the record setting TD passes just highlighted his outstanding afternoon in The Shoe.

Mike Meals – Mike Weber makes the jump for me from Unsung Hero to MVP this game. Going for 144 yards and a score was a great day in and of itself. But watch his runs. He is breaking tackles, not getting tripped up by a DL slapping his ankle in the trenches, but more than that, he is carrying defenders with him, being tougher to bring down. I loved it.

Joe Thomas Barrett, enough said

tOSU O-line MVP

Love y'all boys with everything in me on the next one @elflein65 @b_price54 #slobs pic.twitter.com/1i9ScuxrfP

— Mike Weber (@mikeweberjr) October 1, 2016

Scott – Have to go with Pat Elflein. Dude is the anchor of a great offensive line.

WVa – Pat Elfein is probably the most consistent lineman the Buckeyes have ever had, plus he is just plain nasty. He does not shy away from helping other linemen after he has destroyed his match-up. My favorite part of the game Saturday was the moment he actually expected Weber Jr. to pick him up like he has him!

Ben v. – Elflein is a leader among men, and he continues to make this offensive line better each and every week. He will really be missed next year when he’s off playing on Sundays.

Brandon – Pat Elflein. This guy just keeps everything together. Without him, the three new guys would be struggling a lot more than they are.

JC – Pat Elflein. This guy is a bear. He was opening holes big enough to drive a tractor through it.

Mike Meals – I’ve said it, others here have said it, it will keep being said…Pat Elflein will be the pick here until I have to change it for someone else.

Easiest decision of the week, Pat Elflein!

tOSU Offensive Unsung

Scott – Demario McCall. Dude could start for 95 percent of the D-I schools out there.

WVa – Parris Campbell got his first touchdown yet not very many people are seeing the real work he is putting in. He is becoming as nasty on the edge as a blocker as Evan Spencer was and maybe just a smidgen better.

Ben v. – Parris Campbell gets the nod from me. I have been clamoring for the Buckeyes to get their wide receivers more involved in the game and this week they finally did. Campbell had four catches which was double what he had in the previous three games combined, so look for him to be used more going forward.

Brandon – Dontre Wilson. I just really like what Wilson is bringing to the table this year. He is the definition of great teammate. He doesn’t care where he plays, he is willing give his all for the team. We have seen him line up at QB, RB, WR, H-Back, kick returner, and punt returner. Another game…another 60+ yards and a touchdown.

JC – I guess I have to say Mike Weber here. So much light was taken off his “outstanding” performance due to JT’s record setting afternoon. Mike Weber belongs and he will be the Offensive juggernaut many, many times as the games roll on.

Mike Meals – P. Campbell. Yeah, he scored his first TD at OSU, which was a great play call and good for him. But I liked seeing him get in the offense more. 4 catches for 36 yards isn’t going to light up the headlines, but teams will have to plan for yet another weapon when game planning the Buckeyes.

Parris Campbell runs away with it here.

Defensive

tOSU Defensive MVP

Scott – Raekwon McMillan. He’s a stud.

WVa – If I have to choose just one I am going with Raekwonza. As good as Shazier was at getting to the football, McMillan is better and when he has to reverse field he closes faster. He is always around the football and will be the season MVP for this defense. His coverage of players out of the backfield and when receivers cross the middle goes unmathced!

Ben v. – Marshon Lattimore and Malik Hooker. The secondary is a no-fly zone at these two guys have made it that way. Both unknown going into the season, they have emerged as legitimate defensive MVP’s on a team loaded with talent. Knowing we have those two back in the secondary let’s the defensive front do work.

Brandon – Raekwon McMillan. He has become a steady force in the middle. If a team tries to run it up the middle, McMillan is there to greet them. He has really taken the next step and the defensive tackles stepping up are part of the reason why.

JC – Raekwon McMillan. As Mike says he is the QB here. He is the force behind this outstanding unit.

Mike Meals – Raekwon McMillan – The QB of the Silver Bullets, in on 7 tackles for the day. But watch the way he controls the middle of the field. It doesn’t matter if they are playing a deep zone or stacking the box, no one is running through the middle if Kwon is there.

Reakwon McMillan is a man amongst boys right now on the best defense in the country and that’s saying a lot.

tOSU D-line MVP

Scott – Nick Bosa. He’s gonna be better than Joey.

WVa – I am picking Robert Landers here because he is making sure that he’s not losing playing time right now. Also means this is a ite over-all with Nick “I don’t need no stinking shrug” Bosa.

Ben v. – Robert Landers showed up big last week. He has shown some signs of brilliance early this season, but he commanded the attention of Rutgers offensive line all game.

Brandon – I’m going to go with Robert Landers. He only had two tackles, one sack, and two tackles-for-loss but he was a constant force up the middle. Landers really stepped up this game and opened up things for the linebackers.

JC – Nick Bosa. His 4 tackles and sack boost him, certainly in the direction, of Joey.

Mike Meals – Baby Bosa. 4 tackles and sack, while not playing every down, shows the raw talent Nick has. And I love the 4 DEs in on passing situations.

Tie ball game and bottom of the ninth I will take younger Bosa and Robert Landers every time. Tie here.

tOSU Defensive Unsung

Scott – Gonna go with the entire secondary. Provided good run support and gave no room to pass.

WVa – Secondary here just like everyone else. Some individuals are playing at a high level, but the unit is playing better than anyone imagined and might be the best rotation in the country with little to no drop-off!

Ben v. – Chris Worley doesn’t get a lot of press, but man he sure shows up when he needs to. He was playing well on run coverage and doing equally as well in pass coverage making quite a few plays to end drives for the Scarlet Knights. While McMillan gets all the pub, Worley goes about his business and continues to shine.

Brandon – Marshon Lattimore. He has become an absolute shutdown cornerback opposite of the other shutdown cornerback, Gareon Conley. On Saturday, he had another two pass breakups.

JC – I love the backfield. I want so much to say Hooker, lattimore, Conley, or Webb, but that would be ignoring the solid performance from Tyquan Lewis. It actually could even be debated that the entire unit here was unsung…everyone participated effectively.

Mike Meals – Tyquan Lewis…he didn’t really show up as dominant in the box score, but he played a very solid game. He had one sack, one pass break-up, and a QB hit.

This is a hard one to pick!! Secondary wins by default thanks to me and Scott.

Odds and Ends

tOSU Special Teams MVP

Scott – N/A

WVa – Every starting position after a kick off was inside the 20. That is ridiculous coverage for a team that gave up a score in the Oklahoma game. Have to take my hat off to Coombs and Coach Meyer for the improvement and he said as much in the post game press conference so you know they worked on it a lot during the off week!

Ben v. – EGW is a good pick by Brandon, so I will echo that pick. He may not be getting playing time in the secondary because of the talent that is there, but the kid is putting everything he has into special teams. Knowing the effort he is putting in there, he will eventually find himself starting on defense.

Brandon – Eric Glover-Williams. He was a force on punts…barely missing two blocks. On kick returns, he was consistently the first one down the field and causing problems. His hustle and dedication to kick coverage puts a lot of pressure on the returners to make a decision before they get up to speed.

JC – I am mixed here … I want to say Durbin, but a missed PAT is nothing to ignore. In a close one it could mean the world. So, I guess, as usual it’s Cam. But, hey, wait! I think it should be Liam McCullough the Long snapper. Primarily because these guys never get recognized for their needed speciality … but also, saying “long-snapper” makes me feel like a sophomore again ….

Mike Meals – Definitely not the kicker we all forgot the name of…missed XPs are unacceptable. Cam had a perfect game…not a single return yard against him (ok, not a single punt either). Actually, I would say the entire kickoff coverage team…Much better than what we have seen so far this season

Eric Glover Williams is emerging as he is one of the players working his way up the ladder through special teams . . , stay tuned!

tOSU Needs Improvement

Scott – Kicking.

WVa – This will seem stupid because there were twelve different WR’s with a catch, but I would like to see more touches for the running backs. Seems like McCall is earning some more playing time and I hate that he is getting the carries in mop-up time. He is special!

Ben v. – The slow start was the only thing that I saw last week that needed improvement. Against better teams we are going to need to have more 2nd and 3rd quarters statistically in order to get the job done. Sure we dominated yardage, but we couldn’t seem to find the endzone early.

Brandon – Sam Hubbard. I am the biggest Hubbard fan there is but I feel like he has not been as impressive as the other three defensive ends so far this year. Is he better suited for a reserve role like he had last year? Or are teams just focusing on him so much that it is opening the door for other lineman? Last year, it was obvious teams double and triple teamed Joey Bosa…I don’t see that with Hubbard.

JC – regardless of the spread, and that 12 different players caught a pass – I will stay on the call-playing. This was Rutgers, not the Spartans, Badgers, or Wolverines. I have yet to buy into Warriner & Beck.

Mike Meals – Because I am nitpicking here, JT Barrett. And I bet he would say the same thing. The pick against Rutgers was on him, I don’t think he saw the underneath DB that tipped the pass. I know he expects more out of himself.

Hodgepodge picks here, flip a coin!

tOSU Next Big Star

Scott – Binjemin Victor. Dude can ball.

WVa – Demario McCall will get some of those touches I was speaking of in the above topic. I look forward to his time to shine.

Ben v. – Demario McCall sure looks like he is ready to handle the spotlight already. He has shined every time he touches the ball this season. He is a little unfortunate that Mike Weber still has so much time left at Ohio State, but I am sure Urban and company will find a way to get him more involved.

Brandon – Mike Weber. He is already a star but just imagine what his stats will look like after the season is over. Barring injury, Weber is on pace for over 1,600 yards.

JC – Who knows! This team is the 1996 Yankees. The world is at their feet and they are loaded – right down to 5th string….. (is there a 5th string?)

Mike Meals – Parris Campbell. I have been on Weber’s train for a long time here, and I think PC will be the next super solid #2 wideout at OSU

Your choice who steps up here!

TB1G Coach of the Week

Scott – Urban Meyer. Had them ready to play after an off week after a big road win.

WVa – Kevin Wilson is a master right now and the Hoosiers have been having a measure of success against Ohio State. The upset of Sparty was big for the program and huge for confidence headed to Columbus this week!

Ben v. – Kevin Wilson has Indiana feeling good about themselves after beating Sparty over the weekend. While Michigan State seems a little down this year, the win for Indiana has to provide a lot of confidence coming into their battle with the Buckeyes this weekend.

Brandon – Kirk Ferentz. I think I will continue to just give this award to him. Over and over he struggles for years, then he wins a COY and receives an extension…which then prompts him to Netflix and chill for a few years. That kind of long-con game is deserving of Coach of the Week.

JC – Indiana’s win was big and a sure surprise. I guess based on that we’d have to say Wilson … but keep in mind Fitzgerald put the final nail in Iowa’s coffin….

Mike Meals – K Wilson at Indiana. Michigan State is quickly showing that they are not who anyone thought they were to start the season, but Wilson getting a W at home over Sparty gets him a nod in my book this week.

Kevin Wilson is doing all of the right things in Indiana.

2016 NFL Week 4 Open Thread

I was at the game at Wembley yesterday and the Colts were all over the place. Some serious wrist-slitting going off over on the Facebook page today. I feel bad for myself for blowing £75 on an Andrew Luck jersey, but even worse for the Colts fans who came all that way to see their team only play the 4th quarter! :horse:

I'm getting a bit tired of all the Jaguars bandwagon jumpers now though, every year there's a few thousand more jerseys and a few thousand more people screaming when the screens tell them to, and almost none of them seem to have a clue what's going off! Either give us our own team or start sending someone interesting over!

James Quick (WR Louisville)

When you are that close to the endzone with 30+ sec and A TIME OUT ... GO FOR THE F'ing ENDZONE...

Dont get cute try to make enough yardage for the first down.. its 4th down catch it, get north/south then start to wiggle, but HEAD TO THE ENDZONE
But then I can't pretend to be outraged!!!!
