Urban Meyer once hoped the two would compete for the starting job at Ohio State. Now they’ll square off for a shot at a national title

You could almost feel the culture shift within the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on the first Tuesday of February in 2013. Coming off an undefeated 12-0 campaign the prior fall, the Ohio State coaching staff was putting the final touches on what would become one of the most celebrated recruiting classes in program history.

For much of the morning signed letters of intent flooded the athletics department’s fax machine, containing now-heralded names such as Vonn Bell, Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliot and Jalin Marshall. Ohio State was no stranger to excelling in recruiting, but this was something different altogether. This is what you pay for when you hire Urban Meyer.

The ensuing press conferences turned into a celebratory affair, as Meyer and his assistants discussed their vision for the touted class of incoming freshmen. As with any sports-related media session, most coaches spoke in platitudes and generalities. But Stan Drayton, then serving as the team’s running backs’ coach, didn’t shy away from sharing the staff’s primary recruiting objective.

“We are trying to out-recruit our current football players,” Drayton told the media.

Drayton knows Meyer better than most. He served as an assistant on Meyer’s staff at both Ohio State and Florida, and watched both programs grow into powerhouses as Meyer stacked elite talent at every position, creating an obsessively competitive culture that bread championships.

Many coaches pander to blue-chip recruits, selling them on the notion that they’re already good enough to contribute immediately. Meyer promises only that they’ll have to fight for every rep they receive, that they’ll be competing with players who were equally coveted in previous recruiting cycles, and that there will be even more highly-ranked prospects coming to take their spot the following season. Somehow, he still almost always gets his man.

J.T. Barrett was hardly the headliner of Ohio State’s 2013 recruiting class. The 4-star quarterback from Texas was ranked by 247sports as the 137th best prospect in the nation, placing him behind 11 other Buckeye commits. Still, on the surface, it appeared that Meyer had handpicked his quarterback of the future. In reality, the Buckeyes’ head coach was anything but assured.

For years Meyer had a policy that he wouldn’t accept a commitment from a quarterback before seeing the prospect throw live. So when Barrett called then-offensive coordinator Tom Herman late in his junior year, surprisingly ready to commit his scholarship, it sent Meyer into a state of panic. He wasn’t sold that Barrett was the caliber of thrower he needed to compete nationally, but knew that not accepting his commitment immediately would likely push the prospect away for good.

At Herman’s urging Meyer relented, and when Barrett enrolled early during the winter semester of 2013, it was hard to push aside the feeling of buyer’s remorse. Barrett suffered a torn ACL during his senior season in high school, and arrived in Columbus overweight.

“Coach Meyer is looking at me like, ‘Who the hell is this guy?’,” recalled Tom Herman, as told in Bill Rabinowitz’s book The Chase. “He’s going to play quarterback for us?”

Quickly, Meyer and his staff fell in love with Barrett as a person, as the young signal caller displayed leadership and maturity well beyond his years. But on the field questions lingered, as Barrett underwhelmed in the 2014 spring game as a redshirt freshman, his first taste of action in Ohio Stadium.

There was never a doubt in Deshaun Watson. Ranked as the top dual threat passer in the 2014 recruiting class, Watson was one of the most highly coveted prospects in the country. Meyer hankered for Watson as much as anybody, seeing in him the prototypical quarterback for his spread offense, and an opportunity to out-recruit Barrett.

Watson, however, verbally committed to Clemson in February of his sophomore year, six months before Meyer would even coach his first game at Ohio State. The Buckeyes did everything they could to overcome the uphill battle, recruiting Watson as hard as they recruited any other prospect, while not seriously pursuing any other elite alternatives. But Watson didn’t budge.

“It was over,” remembered Meyer, earlier this month. “We tried really hard to get involved, but they did a good job locking him down.”

Watson’s decision to stick with his commitment has had a lasting impact on the Ohio State program to this day. On the recruiting front, the Buckeyes have since altered their approach when targeting quarterbacks, pushing for commitments early. By pursuing Watson until the bitter end in 2014, Ohio State was left at the alter without a legitimate backup option, and settled on an unheralded 3-star in Stephen Collier at the eleventh hour as a result. Collier has never played a meaningful snap as a member of the Scarlet and Grey, and likely never will.

When last year’s top target Dwyane Haskins wasn’t ready or willing to commit to Ohio State in the spring, Meyer and the Buckeyes quickly moved elsewhere and accepted a commitment from another prospect who was. Haskins would eventually rethink his own recruitment, and in turn the Buckeyes shifted their priorities to make him the only quarterback in the class. Ironically enough, he’s been playing the part of Watson during bowl prep. Meyer sees a lot of Watson in Haskins, but he learned from the experience in 2014 to not put all of his chips in that basket when targeting the 4-star from Maryland.

On the field, much of the story has already been written. Barrett was prematurely thrust into a starting role as a redshirt freshman after Braxton Miller hurt his shoulder - against Clemson, of all teams - in the Orange Bowl to conclude the season before. Barrett would deliver shaky performances at first, but grew as the season progressed, and led the Buckeyes to the precipice of the playoffs before suffering an injury of his own.

It’s an interesting thought experiment to consider how things would have differed that season, had Meyer flipped Watson to Ohio State, as he’s done with countless other blue-chip prospects. As an early-enrollee, would Watson have beaten out Barrett for the starting gig in 2014, as he was recruited to do? Does Cardale Jones ever have the opportunity to rise as a local legend, had he been buried behind not one but two freshmen quarterbacks? If Watson is the starting quarterback in 2014, does Ohio State still win the first ever college football playoff?

Meyer once envisioned that Barrett and Watson would one day duel for a starting job at Ohio State. The Buckeyes coveted Watson on the likely premise that they were out-recruiting Barrett, but with Watson at Clemson, Barrett never had the opportunity to elevate in the face of that competition. Now he does, with a spot in the national championship on the line.

After losing to UCLA 86-73 on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas, Ohio State returns home to take on in-state foe Youngstown State tonight.

Ohio State doesn’t have much time to dwell on Saturday’s loss to UCLA, as the Buckeyes will host Youngstown State tonight. Thad Matta’s team will close out their non-conference schedule this week, following tonight’s game up with another home contest on Thursday night against UNC-Asheville. The Buckeyes open up their Big Ten schedule on New Year’s Day when they travel to Champaign to take on Illinois.

Today’s game marks the fourth meeting all-time between the Buckeyes and the Penguins, with Ohio State having won the previous three games. The last time these two schools squared off came in 2006 when Ohio State had little trouble downing Youngstown State 91-57 at Nationwide Arena. Ivan Harris led the Buckeyes with 19 points in the victory, while Daequan Cook came off the bench to record a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

The Buckeyes were able to hang with UCLA for a half, only trailing the Bruins 40-37 after 20 minutes of Saturday’s game in Las Vegas. UCLA opened up the second half with a 16-5 run to open up a double-digit lead. Ohio State was able to cut UCLA’s lead to six points a couple times during the second half, but the Buckeyes weren’t able to get any closer. UCLA has now won five straight games against Ohio State.

One of the few bright spots in the loss to UCLA was Marc Loving, who had his best shooting game of the season. The senior came out firing, scoring 13 of his 19 points in the first half. For the game, Loving his seven of the 11 shots he attempted, with three of those made field goals coming from behind the three-point line. After a sluggish start to the season, Loving has now scored in double figures in three of his last four games. The Toledo native ranks second in scoring among the Buckeyes, with his 12.2 points per game only trailing the 14.0 points per game Jae’Sean Tate is averaging.

Forward Keita Bates-Diop continues to work his way back into game shape after missing five games earlier this season due to an ankle injury. Even before Bates-Diop injured his ankle in the second half against Providence, the junior forward was already trying to work his way to 100% after suffering a stress fracture in his leg over the summer. The 25 minutes Bates-Diop was on the court for on Saturday was his highest total since returning from injury against Florida Atlantic. Bates-Diop scored 13 points off the bench against UCLA, marking his highest scoring output since putting in 14 points in the season-opening win against Navy.

Youngstown State will be playing their final non-conference game of the regular season before jumping into Horizon League play against Milwaukee next Thursday. Right now the minds of Youngstown State fans might not be on the basketball court now though, as their football team recently earned a spot in next month’s FCS National Championship Game with their thrilling victory over Eastern Washington on Saturday.

While the Youngstown State football is preparing to try and win the FCS title, the basketball team is just hoping to make any sort of postseason. Youngstown State became a Division I basketball member for the 1981-82 season, but they are still seeking their first NCAA Tournament bid. The only time Youngstown State has been a part of any Division I postseason tournament came in the 2012-13 season when the Penguins earned a CIT bid.

Youngstown State head coach Jerry Slocum is currently in his 12th season as head coach of the Penguins, but he hasn’t been a part of much success during his time with the school, posting a 134-217 record. This is Slocum’s 42nd year of coaching, with stops at Nyack, Geneva, and Gannon prior to being hired by Youngstown State before the 2005-06 season. Slocum was at the helm when Youngstown State earned their only postseason berth, leading the Penguins to a win over Oakland before falling to Canisius in the second round of the 2013 CIT.

This year’s Youngstown State team is likely going to a strong run in conference play if they have any designs on making the postseason. The Penguins stumbled out of the gates, dropping three of their first four games of the season. Youngstown State comes into tonight’s contest with just a 6-6 record, but they are coming off a 101-97 overtime win over Niagara on Wednesday night. Leading scorer Cameron Morse poured in 27 points in the victory, while center Jorden Kaufman registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out after logging 18 minutes on the floor. Wednesday’s game was already Youngstown State’s second overtime game of the season, as the Penguins fell to Toledo 103-98 in their second game of the season.

Numbers to know

232-76

Ohio State has amassed a 232-76 record against in-state opponents. The Buckeyes last played another team from the Buckeye state in the first round of the 2016 NIT, beating Akron 72-63 in overtime. This will be the 95th game in which Ohio State has played a Division I team from Ohio, with the Buckeyes holding 73-21 record against in-state foes.

44

With his 19 points on Saturday against UCLA, Marc Loving moved into 44th place on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list. Loving passed Carter Scott (1,073 points) and Scoonie Penn (1,076 points) and currently has 1,079 points. Loving will need his hot shooting from Saturday to carry over if he wants to move up another spot on the list, as he needs 21 points to tie Mel Nowell for 43rd on Ohio State’s all-time scoring list.

716

Youngstown State coach Jerry Slocum has 716 career wins, which ranks 36th all-time in NCAA history. Slocum currently ranks eighth among active Division I coaches. Three more wins will give Slocum 719 for his career, which will tie Don Haskins for 35th most wins in NCAA history.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Jae’Sean Tate

The junior from Pickerington is Ohio State’s leading scoring this year, averaging 14.0 points per game. On Saturday against UCLA, Tate scored 15 points, marking the 10th time in 11 games this year that he has reached double figures in scoring. The only game in which Tate didn’t reach double figures in scoring came last month against Jackson State, where he only scored seven points in the lopsided Ohio State win. If Tate is able to make it to 10 points tonight he’ll record his 800th career point as a Buckeye.

Trevor Thompson

Coming a performance against UConn where he scored a career-high 17 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds, Trevor Thompson was pretty quiet against UCLA, only scoring four points in 23 minutes off the bench. The Buckeyes would be wise to try and establish Thompson early in tonight’s game, as Youngstown State has just one player who averages more than 10 minutes per game that is over 6-7. Thompson needs nine points to reach 500 points for his career, with 342 of those points coming as a Buckeye.

Youngstown State

Cameron Morse

If Ohio State wants to avoid being upset by Youngstown State, they’ll have to focus on putting the clamps on Cameron Morse. The junior guard is Youngstown State’s top scorer, averaging 23.8 points per game, which is the fourth-highest total in Division I. In his 56 career games at Youngstown State, Morse has reached double figures 39 times, with 23 of those games being games in which Morse has scored at least 20 points.

Francisco Santiago

Morse’s running mate in the backcourt does a little bit of everything for the Penguins. The junior from Cleveland ranks second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game. Santiago did his best to pick up the slack when Morse was injured, recording double-doubles in two of the three games that Morse missed. Last time out Santiago played 43 of the 45 minutes in the overtime victory over Niagara, scoring 18 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

The top-rated back in the 2018 class sets his announcement date and will be releasing his top 4 schools soon.

As college football finds itself in a recruiting dead period, the Ohio State coaching staff is hard at work trying to earn a commitment from five-star running back Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton). However, as Akers’ recruitment comes to an end, the Buckeyes are looking more and more as a long shot. Because of this, Urban Meyer and the recruiting staff will begin to look forward to the 2018 class.

And with that comes five-star RB Zamir White (Laurinburg, NC / Scotland County) and everything he has to offer. Seen as the No. 1 RB in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, White has built himself an impressive list of scholarship offers. Along with Ohio State, White has earned offers from schools like Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Notre Dame and plenty of others.

Last week, White took to Twitter to announce his decision to commit on his mom’s birthday, June 27. Meaning, the next six months will now be even busier for the U.S. Army All-American.

I've decided too make my decision June 27th on my mothers birthday... Top 4 coming soon!

— Zeus34 (@zeus1_34) December 16, 2016

White also mentioned that he would be announcing a list of his top 4 schools soon. While the actual list has yet to be confirmed by White himself, it is believed that Ohio State is a sure-fire contender to make the list.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound back visited the Buckeyes back in June and had plenty of good things to say about his time in Columbus and his relationship with running back’s coach Tony Alford.

The Buckeyes already have one RB commit in the 2017 class with four-star J.K. Dobbins (La Grange, TX / La Grange) and another in next year’s class in four-star Brian Snead (Seffner, FL / Armwood). However, it has become apparent that Meyer is after one more and White would be an ideal fit.

Be sure to keep up with Land-Grant Holy Land in the coming days as White will be announcing a top-four soon.

Quick Hits

  • 2017 four-star RB commit J.K. Dobbins received high praise from the wide receiver coach at Hutto high school (Hutto, TX) coach over the weekend when Coach Hughes compared him to former Buckeye great Ezekiel Elliott. While Dobbins is early in his football career, he is getting noticed.

Thats big! Thank you coach! #BuckeyeNation https://t.co/VGAltIt5rc

The Buckeyes kept it close for the first 20 minutes, but couldn’t hang with the Huskies after halftime.

Ohio State women’s basketball was able to stay competitive for just a half with Connecticut, the top-ranked team in the country and winner of the last four national championships. The Buckeyes fell to the Huskies, 82-63, at the XL Center in Hartford on Monday night.

Ohio State had a four-game winning streak snapped, falling to 9-4 on the season, with all four defeats coming against ranked opponents. The Buckeyes have just one more game, on Wednesday in Columbus against Winthrop, before Big Ten play begins.

This UConn team is “rebuilding” after seeing Brianna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson, and Morgan Tuck taken with the top three picks in last spring’s WNBA draft. The Huskies, who featured just a six-player rotation, improved to 10-0 on the season, and have now won 85 consecutive games.

Kelsey Mitchell paced Ohio State with 23 points, but the Buckeyes simply couldn’t keep up in the second half, being outscored 42-29.

Stephanie Mavunga finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 15 rebounds, and Shayla Cooper added 15 points of her own.

Katie Lou Samuelson and Napheesa Collier led Connecticut, scoring 26 and 27, respectively.

Ohio State looked tight and tentative at the outset, turning the ball over five times in the first quarter and falling behind by 12 points. UConn put together runs of 8-0 and 9-0, with Samuelson, Kia Nurse, and Gabby Williams each scoring five points in the quarter.

Mitchell was held in check early, but turned things on, punctuating a seven-point frame with a 25-footer as time in the quarter expired.

— CBS Sports Network (@CBSSportsNet) December 20, 2016

Cooper also had seven, as the Buckeyes closed out on a 9-0 run, and trailed 19-16.

The teams went back and forth in the second period, with neither able to establish an upper hand. But a 9-0 run by the Huskies over just a minute of play with Mitchell sitting on the bench, capped by a Samuelson three-pointer with a hand in her face, pushed the lead out to 37-24.

Mitchell got back on the floor and abruptly scored eight straight points, pulling Ohio State back to within 40-34 heading into the locker room. The sixth-leading scorer in the country, she finished the first half with a game-high 19 points.

Cooper added nine, while Mavunga had four points and seven rebounds.

The Buckeyes started cold in the third quarter, and UConn got five quick points from Napheesa Collier. Samuelson then buried a pair of triples, giving the Huskies a 55-41 lead.

Mavunga scored five points in the period, but Mitchell was limited to just two, as Ohio State shot just 31.6 percent from the field, turned the ball over seven times, and found themselves down 70-48 with one quarter to go.

UConn missed its first seven shots of the fourth frame, but Ohio State failed to make a any sort of dent in the lead, going more than four minutes without scoring. The Buckeyes finished off with a minor flourish, though, hitting six of their final nine shots, but it was far too little, too late.

With the exception of Washington, the playoff field is made up of some of the youngest rosters in college football.

“It really does go against what I guess you’d call conventional coaching wisdom. But I would also say, OK, who are those two seniors and who are your juniors? I like those juniors I have in the middle of my defense. And I really like that junior I have under center leading my offense in J.T. Barrett.”

-Urban Meyer, via Ryan McGee, ESPN

Several months ago, before the start of the 2016 college football season, the current playoff picture seemed a longshot--not because any doubted the strength of Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State collectively, but because individually, they represented some of the youngest and least experienced schools in the Power 5. All three entered September with the least experienced rosters in their respective conferences. Worse still, Phil Steele’s extensive, five-part experience rating system placed Clemson 101st, Alabama 116th and Ohio State 128th out of 128 FBS programs. Washington remains the single playoff team that returned a significant portion of its squad this season, with 80 percent of its roster having earned varsity letters previously.

For Ohio State and Clemson, much of the teams’ success comes down to the quarterback position. While J.T. Barrett provides the irreplaceable on-field leadership for the young Ohio State team, Deshaun Watson has done the same for Clemson. Of course, Watson also had running back Wayne Gallman and wide receiver Mike Williams--both juniors--at his disposal on offense.

For Alabama, head coach Nick Saban has relied on “the Process,” which requires attention to detail bordering on perfection--even for the consistently-ranked four and five star recruits coming to Tuscaloosa in each successive recruiting class. The Tide made it to the playoff behind a freshman quarterback in Jalen Hurts, a star player from Houston. While Hurts had the size, strength and speed deserving of a four-star recruit, he was, more importantly, a fit for Alabama’s system, which is why the team has been so successful around him, even as a freshman.

Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State all have that in common: the ability to recruit players who are not only tops in their position groups, but also fit into their respective systems, and that means a shorter time from arriving on campus to making an impact on games.

“I always want to be out there and help the team as best I can. It obviously wasn’t a good situation missing the first two kicks, but I was ready to put us into overtime...I’m good. I’m past that. I was a little upset for the next day or two, then came in and was ready to get to work and ready for the next game.”

-Ohio State kicker Tyler Durbin, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

For a player who had never competitively played in a football game before, Ohio State kicker Tyler Durbin was pleasantly surprising for most of the regular season, hitting an inordinate number of field goals and extra points for a former soccer player. That is, until the Michigan game when everything seemed to fall apart for the senior from Virginia. The former walk on missed two crucial field goals that could have won the game for Ohio State. The first miss occurred during Ohio State’s efficient 10-play, 72-yard opening drive on a 37 yard attempt for Durbin. The second came in the fourth quarter on a 21-yard attempt that would have tied the game at 17-all with seven minutes left in the fourth.

Previously, Durbin had been perfect on field goals under 40 yards. Actually, he had been perfect on the entire season from field goal range besides a blocked attempt versus Penn State. And for good measure, he was 60-for-62 on extra point attempts heading into the Michigan game. While it would have been folly to expect that Durbin--who is in just his second season playing football--would have ice in his veins and be able to put the game away at these critical moments, his performance throughout the rest of the season provided quite a bit of confidence in the kicker. He was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals against Wisconsin on a night when the offense couldn’t seem to get going. Two weeks prior to Michigan, he had hit a career-long 45-yard field goal against Maryland.

And while he may be criticized for the two early misses, Durbin did nail the final, 23-yard field goal to send Ohio State to overtime against Michigan. In retrospect, Durbin acknowledged that his technique--specifically the position of his plant foot--was to blame for the misses, not nerves or anxiety over the first botched attempt. In other words, it is something that can be fixed prior to Ohio State’s matchup with Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.

“When I arrived at Miami, Ed was a really young, talented player who learned how to prepare. Malik was in the same jumping-off spot.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, via Ben Axelrod, Land of 10

Ohio State redshirt sophomore safety Malik Hooker has more than proven himself as one of the best defensive backs in college football this season. With six interceptions--three of which were returned for touchdowns--alongside 67 tackles, Hooker was named a unanimous all-American at his position, despite having very little playing time in his freshman season and entering this year as a relative unknown. His stats, including his 181 return yards from his picks, are best in the nation.

Still, co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano recognized similarities between Hooker and another esteemed safety, even before Hooker made it to fall practice. In winter conditioning and spring practice, Hooker’s skillset in many ways resembled that of former Miami Hurricanes and Baltimore Ravens great Ed Reed. In Schiano’s first season as defensive coordinator with the Hurricanes, he saw Reed develop into the player who would go on to become a nine-time Pro Bowler with the Ravens. In his time at Miami, Reed returned four of his 21 career picks for touchdowns. Of his 64 interceptions as a pro, Reed took seven back to the end zone. The ability to not only pick the ball off, but to gain positive yardage, is what distinguishes players like Reed and Hooker.

And while Hooker certainly seems to have been endowed with an eye for the ball, along with a great amount of speed and control--attributes that have even caused Urban Meyer to consider using Hooker on offense--his greatest strength, in Schiano’s eye, is his preparation. His emergence has largely been about his diligence in getting ready to face the next opponent, something that will only continue to make him better as he continues to play.
