LGHL Ohio State is still an offseason winner despite losses to the NFL

Ohio State is still an offseason winner despite losses to the NFL

Though some key members have moved on, the Buckeyes still return a talented team.

“When it comes to selling elite recruits on the chance to be developed into draft picks, few staffs have as much evidence to work with as Ohio State’s right now.”

- Austin Ward, ESPN

Even with the losses to the NFL for Ohio State, including players such as Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore, Curtis Samuel, and Noah Brown will certainly sting, but the offseason can still be considered a success for the Buckeyes. After all, they return quarterback J.T. Barrett, back for his senior season. And they also get to bring back Billy Price, who will likely shift over to center, as well as key defensive linemen Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard, and Jalyn Holmes.

Add in Jamarco Jones coming back and tight end Marcus Baugh, and the team still holds much of its shape from the team that the College Football Playoff saw in 2016-17. The 31-0 loss to Clemson in the national semifinal game looked to have stung just enough to help bring these players back for another run at a championship.

And an important aspect of these losses is they were mostly from the same position groups. Hooker, Lattimore, and Gareon Conley all exit from the defensive backs, which the Buckeyes should be able to shore up on considering recent commitments and players still on the roster (including Damon Webb). Samuel and Brown left a bevy of talent behind them as well, with plenty of candidates perhaps ready and up to the task of replacing the two offensive players at H-back and wide receiver.

“[Big Ten underclassmen that could leave early in 2018] Jerome Baker, Sam Hubbard, Dre’Mont Jones, Mike Weber”

- Jesse Temple, ESPN

With the topic of players leaving early for the NFL draft, Ohio State survived its latest annual departures from stars including stars in the secondary and on the offensive side of the ball. But it’s never too early to take a peek at who could declare for the draft after the 2017 season and which candidates seem most likely. Jesse Temple of ESPN broke down the most likely players to do just that in the Big Ten, and four Buckeyes made the list. Of the four mentioned, defensive end Sam Hubbard seems the most obvious choice, given that he could have left after this season and chose to stay another year. The defensive terror did an excellent job the past two seasons of wreaking havoc on quarterbacks across the league and he’ll likely head for the professional level after next season.

Mike Weber was also included, which may seem like a surprise at first but as the article mentions, when you consider the professional lifespan of a running back in the NFL, it makes much more sense that if the rising redshirt sophomore has another great year he could head for greener pastures. Jerome Baker had his breakout year this past season with the Buckeyes in part due to an injury to Dante Booker, who was supposed to be the starting linebacker. Dre’Mont Jones quietly finished with 47 tackles as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and will likely play a larger role next season, so it’s not impossible to see him leaving early either.

“Unsurprisingly, Ezekiel Elliott was named the PFWA Rookie of the Year, as well as the Offensive Rookie of the Year. His college teammate, Joey Bosa, was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year.”

- Harry Lyles Jr., SB Nation

Former Ohio State standouts Ezekiel Elliott and Joey Bosa haven’t stopped producing at a high level in the NFL, either. Their extremely successful college careers have transitioned beautifully into the professional stage as Elliott was named the Pro Football Writers Association Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year, while Bosa took the Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Elliott had a monster rookie season, posting 1,631 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 322 carries. The former Buckeye running back was just recently knocked out of the playoffs by Green Bay, but still performed well in the game.

Bosa, meanwhile, missed the Chargers’ first four games but quickly made up ground on the rest of the league finishing the year with 10.5 sacks. The mark put him among the best in the NFL. Both also made the PFWA All-Rookie team, along with former Buckeye offensive tackle Taylor Decker.

Your excuse to tailgate in mid-April is officially here.

Ohio State made official their spring game’s date and time Tuesday.

Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes will look to rebuild their secondary (again) and retool a listless offense under new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson with spring practices starting March 7 building to the annual Scarlet & Gray game, Saturday, April 15. The time has not officially been set but a noon or 1 p.m. kick would certainly make a lot of sense.

This looks to be the first time there won’t be an Ohio State men’s lacrosse game against a big time opponent as the undercard to the main event that is the spring game. The lax Bucks will be in Ann Arbor taking on Michigan that Saturday.

Tickets in the past have been around $5 (or $10 at the gate) with 100% of proceeds going to charity.

The Buckeyes will be replacing a lot of folks in the secondary next year. Here’s how it all might shake out.

While the Buckeyes return quite a few options on offense, they’ll have to replace multiple contributors on defense this year, especially in the secondary, which will be full of new faces.

An awful lot can change between now and opening day, but here’s an early stab at what the defensive two-deep might look like for next year.

Defensive End

Sam Hubbard (RS Junior)

Jalyn Holmes (Senior)

Who starts along the defensive line is a little bit of an academic question, since the Buckeyes will use a deep rotation of linemen to keep everybody fresh. It’s probable that many more players, including some of the highly recruited youngsters, will find time, but given the proven, established production from Hubbard and Holmes, you have to figure they keep their spots.

Defensive Tackle

Dre’Mont Jones (RS Sophomore)

Jashon Cornell (RS Sophomore)

Jones wasn’t expected to step into this role to start the season, but the Buckeyes had to get creative when Tracy Sprinkle went down for a season-ending injury. All Jones did was become a Freshman All-American. His upside, at a position where Ohio State needs is, is tremendous.

We’re stepping out on a limb a little bit for Cornell, given that he’s been injured and hasn’t had a chance to produce, but he was a mega-recruit, and the potential is all there if he’s healthy. If not, look for Davon Hamilton, or true freshman Haskell Garrett, to step up here.

Defensive Tackle

Tracy Sprinkle (RS Senior)

Michael Hill (RS Senior) OR Robert Landers (RS Sophomore)

This is a tricky spot. Sprinkle earned the job to start last season, but missed almost the entire campaign after a season-ending injury early in the year. Hill was effective, if not flashy, in spots, and Landers really emerged as a possible playmaker, despite being undersized, during the season. Any of these three is capable of grabbing the top spot on the depth chart, but we’ll guess Sprinkle gets the first crack at defending his old job. Everybody should play, though.

Defensive End

Tyquan Lewis (RS Senior)

Nick Bosa (Sophomore)

The Buckeyes truly have an embarrassment of riches at this position. Lewis was your Big Ten Lineman of the Year in 2016, and the sack leader, and he returns for another season to pad the stat sheet. Former five-star uber-recruit Nick Bosa, who flashed numerous times during his freshman year, should get additional shine this season, as it will be increasingly difficult to keep him off the field. And if either of them falter, the Buckeyes have plenty of options, like sophomore Jonathan Cooper, or true freshman and five-star Chase Young.

Weak-side Linebacker

Jerome Baker (Junior)

Keandre Jones (Sophomore)

Baker grabbed onto this job after Dante Booker struggled with injuries in 2016, and never let go, establishing himself as an athletic and dangerous playmaker. The Buckeyes have plenty of backup options, with star recruit Jones potentially emerging from the pack.

Middle Linebacker

Dante Booker (Senior)

Justin Hilliard (RS Sophomore)

Booker was slated to start last season at WLB, but was injured and gave way to Baker. He’s one of the fastest guys on the team, and should be an experienced, productive option if he’s healthy. If he’s not, the Buckeyes could turn to another former elite recruit, Justin Hilliard.

Strong-side Linebacker

Chris Worley (RS Senior)

Baron Browning (Freshman)

Worley returns after a strong season to man the SLB position. Jones, Nick Conner, a former Spring Game star, and true freshman and five-star Baron Browning will fight for the backup role here.

Cornerback

Kendall Sheffield (Junior)

Damon Arnette (RS Sophomore)

The Buckeyes will badly need experience in their defensive backfield, which is why they went and picked up Sheffield, a JUCO player and former Alabama commit. JUCO players aren’t recruited unless the coaching staff thinks they can contribute right away, and Sheffield should be able to provide some stability while Ohio State’s highly touted young defensive backs can season a bit. Arnette, who was strong on special teams earlier, should be a capable backup, but if not, there are plenty of freshmen.

Cornerback

Denzel Ward (Junior)

Jeffrey Okudah (Freshman)

Ward will need to make a big jump from nickelback who was occasionally exposed to perhaps their lockdown corner, but Buckeye defensive backs have made big jumps over an offseason before. Ohio State has some non-freshman options here, like Joshua Norwood, but Okudah, one of the very best recruits in the entire country, is probably too good to redshirt.

Safety

Damon Webb (Senior)

Jordan Fuller (Sophomore)

Webb was picked on occasionally last season, in part because defenses were afraid to throw at virtually anybody else, but with a new year, with a new supporting cast, he could be more effective. And he’s certainly a very capable tackler. He’ll likely be spelled by Jordan Fuller, but there are other young options here too.

Safety

Erick Smith (Senior)

Isaiah Pryor (Freshman)

Smith’s career has been slowed by injures, but now the heralded recruit should be healthy, and read to step into a role where he’ll be badly needed. True freshman Isaiah Pryor could be in the mix at backup, along with sophomore Jahsen Wint.

One of the Buckeyes highest regarded members of the 2017 recruiting class received a 5th star in the Rivals updated rankings.

Chase Young (Hyattsville, MD / DeMatha Catholic) has been garnering rave reviews during the last few months leading up to National Signing Day 2017. With a strong senior season, Young has also been backing up claims that he is one of the best members in this year’s class.

The blue-chip prospect committed to the Buckeyes in July 2016 and has shown he has the athleticism and aggressive mindset to excel at the defensive end position. He was a constant force in the U.S. Army All-American game, earning a tackle for a loss, a QB hurry and he recovered a fumble.

His hard work was recognized on Monday when Rivals.com released their updated rankings for the 2017 class. Young jumped up into the top 10 in the newest addition, being slotted at eight, but more importantly, he was awarded a fifth star.

Young is the only DE commit in Ohio State’s 2017 class but he will be joined by defensive tackle commits Haskell Garrett (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) and Jerron Cage (Cincinnati, OH / Winton Woods.) There is also still a very real possibility that the Buckeyes land the country’s top DT in Marvin Wilson, but we will not know anything more than that until signing day.

Along with Young, nine other Buckeye commits landed in the new Rivals 100. Five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning landed just behind Young at No. 9 and Jeffrey Okudah, Wyatt Davis and Shaun Wade all made the top 25, giving the Buckeyes 20 percent of the country’s top 25 recruits.

Make sure to check out the complete rankings to see where the other Buckeye commits landed.

Buckeye coaches meet with 4-star LB commit

Urban Meyer and other members of the Buckeyes coaching staff met up with outside linebacker commit Pete Werner (Mount Vernon, IN / Cathedral) on Monday and it seemed like Werner enjoyed the visit.

Had a great lunch with @OSUCoachMeyer and @CoachBillDavis!! Can't wait to be apart of the buckeye fam #gobucks ⚪

— Pete Werner (@petewerner23) January 16, 2017

The four-star OLB committed to the Buckeyes just over a month ago and his commitment came at an important time, as four-star OLB Antjuan Simmons, now a Michigan State commit, decommitted from the program only a month prior.

Werner is joined by five-star Baron Browning as the only two linebacker commits in this year’s class.

Thad Matta visits 4-star SF commit

The Ohio State football coaches weren’t the only ones travelling to visit recruits yesterday, as Buckeye basketball head coach Thad Matta traveled to watch four-star SF commit Darius Bazley (Cincinnati, OH / Finneytown Secondary Campus) compete in action.

#OhioState coach Thad Matta sitting in first row watching Darius Bazley @WCPO # pic.twitter.com/Ic0F9OZQqW

— Mike Dyer (@MikeDyer) January 16, 2017

Bazley is one of just three commits Matta has earned in the 2018 recruiting class and he is currently the highest-regarded. 247Sports has him ranked just outside of the top 50, landing at No. 51, and he is seen as the top overall recruit in the state of Ohio.

The 6-foot-7, 185-pound forward is a crucial part of Thad’s class in 2018, so it comes at no surprise the he is putting in time to ensure it stays that way. In a year where Matta and the basketball program have been heavily scrutinized, strong recruiting will certainly help comfort Buckeye Nation.
