Co-defensive coordinator Greg Schiano would know since he coached the respected safety at Miami.

“It’s a blessing and a humbling thing for people to tell you constantly that you remind them of a player like Ed Reed, one of the greater players and greater safeties in football.”

Ohio State safety Malik Hooker via David Jablonski, Dayton Daily News

Coming into the season there was questions as to how the Ohio State secondary would hold up after seeing safeties Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell move on to the NFL. Throughout the season the defensive backs has answered all the questions asked of them, and then some. The new starter who has stood out the most is safety Malik Hooker, who intercepted six passes during the year, returning three of them for touchdowns.

Greg Schiano has likened Hooker to future NFL Hall of Fame safety Ed Reed, who Schiano coached while he was at Miami. Even though Hooker grew up as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, the redshirt sophomore is honored to be compared to the former Baltimore Ravens safety. In just a few months Hooker has gone from unknown to being mentioned as a possible NFL first round draft pick. Not bad for a guy who is still learning as a safety. If Hooker’s game continues to evolve, years down the road people might be comparing some young safeties to him.

“After Oklahoma I started to feel more comfortable. That was a big thing for me personally, going against Oklahoma and how talented they are, I played pretty well for my first big game. That opened the door for me to gain my confidence.”

Ohio State defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones via Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

If Dre’Mont Jones had things his way he’d probably be starting at defensive end right now. Unfortunately for Jones, Ohio State has a surplus of talent at defensive end, which has shuffled Jones to defensive tackle, a spot where he has started 11 games this season. This isn’t the first time in recent memory that the Buckeyes have moved a talented defensive end to the interior of the defensive line. Adolphus Washington was moved inside and excelled for his final two years in the scarlet and gray, and the same type of success could be in store for Jones.

The redshirt freshman from Cleveland was called into action early in the year when starter Tracy Sprinkle was lost for the season due to injury. Jones’ confidence started to build after the Oklahoma game, once the shock of the defensive tackle job being his wore off. As the Buckeyes head into the Fiesta Bowl to take on Clemson, Jones leads Ohio State defensive linemen with 47 tackles, with three of those being tackles for loss. Even though the Buckeyes still have work to do this year, the emergence of Jones makes the defensive line for Ohio State even scarier this year, when Sprinkle is able to return from injury.

“It was so exciting to see him knock the first one down and a couple more of them. When he missed the dunk, I told him, ‘You’re too close to the basket.’ He has been in here, he has been working. We need Kam to do what Kam does.”

Ohio State men’s basketball head coach Thad Matta on Kam Williams via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Heading into Tuesday night’s game against Youngstown State, guard Kam Williams had been struggling over the past three games. The junior was just 7-30 from the field, scoring 16 combined points. Coincidentally, Ohio State lost two of those games, falling to Florida Atlantic and UCLA. Just how off was Williams’ shooting stroke? He failed to reach double figures in all three of those games, while in the first eight games of the season, Williams failed to reach double figures in scoring in just three games.

The good news for Ohio State fans is that Williams might have just found his shooting stroke again. Early on in the blowout against Youngstown State, Williams hit a couple shots, and he finished the game missing just three of his nine shots on his way to scoring 15 points. Now Williams is hoping to have another good shooting performance tonight against UNC-Asheville before the Buckeyes get a bit of a break before Big Ten play starts for them on New Year’s Day. Last year Williams hit over 50 percent of his three-pointers in conference play, and the Buckeyes are going to need him to shoot just as good this year if they plan on being a factor in the Big Ten.

“He’s a gifted run-after-the-catch guy. He does a good job of leveraging the corners and making it hard to tackle.”

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton on wide receiver Michael Thomas via Brett Martel, Associated Press

Even though they are technically still alive in the playoff race, it’s highly unlikely the New Orleans Saints will make it to the playoffs. Some of the Saints still do have a little to play for though. Former Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas has already set some of New Orleans’ rookie receiving records, and has a shot at breaking a couple more in the last two games. Thomas leads NFL rookie receivers with 76 catches, 883 yards, and eight touchdowns, sitting ahead of the five receivers drafted ahead of him.

Even with missing a 16-11 loss to Tampa Bay a couple weeks ago, Thomas already owns the New Orleans rookie record for receptions, and last week tied Marques Colston and Donté Stallworth with his eighth receiving touchdown. Now Thomas can set his sights on trying to surpass Colston’s 1,038 receiving yards. Thomas has caught at least four catches in each of the game he has played this year, with his consistency being the perfect compliment to speedster Brandin Cooks. If Thomas keeps up this pace, he’ll not only own the rookie receiving record of the Saints, but he’ll own all their other receiving records as well.

The spot is still good.

After Ohio State’s dramatic come-from-behind win over Michigan to end the regular season, many Michigan fans, and one Michigan coach in particular, were mad online about the officiating. Soon, online conspiracy theories started to fly around. Did you know that all the officials were secret Ohio State fans? And that they had been fired for being bad at officiating? THAT THE FIX WAS IN?!

Well, upon further review ... that wasn’t exactly the case. The Chicago Tribune’s Teddy Greenstein chatted with the Big Ten’s head of officiating to get a little more clarity on what went down in the game.

First, let’s address the elephant in the room here. Was the spot, in fact, good? From the article:

And on the game's most controversial play — The Spot — Barrett was ruled on the field to have broken the plane of the 15-yard line when a Michigan defender contacted him. The ruling was close enough, Carollo said, that whatever was called on the field would not have been overturned by replay

Despite all the doctored photographs and screenshots you saw on Twitter for a good week after the game, the Big Ten reached the same conclusion basically everybody else outside of Michigan did ... it was really close, and not something that should have been overturned.

But what about the fact that this game included multiple officials from Ohio? Surely refs that reside in the Buckeye state could not possibly be impartial. #WellActually, not only is there no residency requirement for Big Ten refs, but the exact same number of refs from Michigan officiated the game as Ohio. Again, from the article:

The Big Ten has no residency rule, and here's why: Crews, especially the best ones, work together all season. (A crew consists of eight on-field officials, an alternate, two replay officials and an independent timer.)

The one sent to Ohio Stadium on Nov. 26 was Carollo's highest-rated crew, and it contained this geographic makeup: four from Indiana, three from Ohio, three from Michigan, one from Illinois, one from Pennsylvania.

And that picture of the ref that looks like he’s patting Mike Weber on the butt? That ref is from Indiana, not Ohio. While it wasn’t a great look for him to do so, he evidently was patting him as encouragement after he didn’t retaliate following a contentious event.

Of course, those conspiracy theories didn’t stop one Michigan radio station from broadcasting the officiating crew’s contact info while calling for their jobs. According to the article, a security company is reviewing the threatening phone calls the officials got, so great job, everybody.

Was every call in this game perfect? No. Did some of those calls go against Michigan, like a missed PI penalty? Seems like it. But this is a football game, and football games are officiated by humans, who make mistakes. Was there a concentrated effort to screw Michigan out of this game, or should Michigan blame the officiating as the reason they lost? Definitely not.

Big Ten officiating isn’t perfect, but compared to the Pac-12 or Big 12, us Big Ten fans probably have it pretty good. And if you want to get a better idea about what goes into selecting, training, and holding the refs accountable, it’s a good idea to give the Tribune a click.

MC&J tackles the next eight bowl games, and hopefully the results add to the holiday cheer.

Bowl season hasn’t gotten off to the best start for MC&J. New Mexico was covering but let UTSA score a garbage time touchdown. Who knows what Toledo was doing against Appalachian State, and BYU was covering but Wyoming decided that wasn’t going to fly. Hopefully these eight games play out a little better.

Bowl season ATS: 3-5 (3-5 National, 0-0 B1G)

Season ATS: 87-92-4 (41-43-1 National, 46-49-3 B1G)

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Idaho v. Colorado State (-15) - 12/22 7:00 PM EST - ESPN

All looked lost for the Vandals after the first five games of the season, but Idaho regrouped to win six of their last seven games to earn a trip to their third-ever bowl game. The last time Idaho played in a bowl game was in 2009, where they earned a 43-42 win over Bowling Green. After this year Idaho will have one final season as a FBS member before moving back down to the FCS starting in 2018.

Colorado State also had a rough start to the season, but was found success when they inserted Nick Stevens at quarterback. The junior threw 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions this year, with two of those picks coming in the season-opener against Colorado.

Colorado State definitely has the better offense, as evidenced by scoring at least 37 points in each of their last five games. I’m just not convinced the Rams will win this by more than two touchdowns. Idaho will give a spirited effort and while they won’t be able to earn the win, they’ll at least keep things respectable in Boise.

Colorado State 44, Idaho 31

Popeye’s Bahamas Bowl: Eastern Michigan v. Old Dominion (-4) - 12/23 1:00 PM EST - ESPN

People have been saying there are too many bowl games, but how can you be against student-athletes getting a trip to the Bahamas around Christmas for something sponsored by Popeye’s? What makes this bowl game even better is Eastern Michigan will be making just their second bowl appearance (first since 1987) and Old Dominion will be making their first-ever bowl appearance.

Last year Eastern Michigan finished the season 1-11, so to say their turnaround this year was unexpected is quite and understatement. Old Dominion comes into this game on a roll, having won their last five games, scoring at least 31 points in each of those five victories.

Old Dominion quarterback David Washington should be fun to watch in this one, as he is just one of four quarterbacks with at least 25 touchdown passes and four or less interceptions. The Eastern Michigan defense has been solid this year, but they’ll have fits trying to slow down the Monarchs offense.

Old Dominion 38, Eastern Michigan 28

Armed Forces Bowl: Louisiana Tech (-6.5) v. Navy - 12/23 4:30 PM EST - ESPN

Navy was knocking on the door of earning a New Year’s Six bowl bid as the Group of Five squad, but two losses to close out the regular season dashed those hopes. The Midshipmen are now down to their third-string quarterback after Will Worth was injured against Temple.

Navy will have their hands full trying to slow down a Louisiana Tech offense that is averaging over 500 yards per game. Quarterback Ryan Higgins has thrown for 4,208 yards and 37 touchdowns this year. The wide receivers of the Bulldogs are putting up video game numbers, with Trent Taylor having grabbed 124 passes for 1,570 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Carlos Henderson has 72 catches for 1,406 yards, and 17 touchdowns.

Navy hadn’t lost back-to-back games since 2014, and I just don’t see them ended that losing streak here. If the Midshipmen were healthier at quarterback I might be able to see them being able to give the Bulldogs some fits with the triple-option attack, but Louisiana Tech will end up scoring early and often here.

Louisiana Tech 41, Navy 24

Dollar General Bowl: Ohio v. Troy (-4) - 12/23 8:00 PM EST - ESPN

Both of these teams had their chances at big upsets during the season, but ended up falling just short. In the second week of the season, Troy put a scare into Clemson before falling to the Tigers 30-24. Ohio recently looked like they might have a shot to hand Western Michigan their first lost of the year in the MAC Championship Game, but the Broncos grabbed a late interception to thwart the upset bid of the Bobcats.

Ohio is bowl-eligible for the eighth straight year, with the only year they didn’t play in a bowl game coming in 2014. The Bobcats aren’t going to blow you away on offense, as most of the year they’ve relied on a solid defense to help them earn their eight wins. Ohio is going to need their defense to step up again, as they’ll be going up against a Troy offense that is averaging nearly 440 yards per game.

Troy is going to want to get Jordan Chunn going early in this game, as the running back rushed for 1,232 yard and 13 touchdowns this year. The Trojans will have quite an advantage in this one, as they won’t have a far trip for this bowl game in Mobile. It won’t be like 2010 when Troy beat Ohio 48-21 in the New Orleans Bowl, but the Trojans will again take down the Bobcats.

Troy 34, Ohio 23

Hawaii Bowl: Hawaii v. Middle Tennessee State (-4.5) - 12/24 8:00 PM EST - ESPN

I hope the Hawaii coach takes the benches away from his team again. There is no better way to say Merry Christmas Eve than to take away the spot where your team sits. It probably doesn’t help my opinion of Hawaii than the only reason they got into this game is because they won a game against UMass.

At least Middle Tennessee State should have quarterback Brent Stockstill back from a broken collarbone which caused him to miss the final three games. Stockstill was really good while he was healthy, throwing for 27 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Ole Miss transfer running back I’Tavius Mathers was also strong throughout the season, rushing for 1,504 yards and 16 touchdowns while also hauling in 62 passes for 589 yards.

I know it’s cute to pick Hawaii here since they are the home team, but I’m not buying it. Middle Tennessee State is just too good for Hawaii. Of course now Hawaii will probably smoke Middle Tennessee State just because it seems like I never pick the Hawaii Bowl right.

Middle Tennessee State 48, Hawaii 28

St. Petersburg Bowl: Miami (OH) v. Mississippi State (-14) - 12/26 11:00 AM EST - ESPN

The Redhawks became the first FBS team to lose their first six games and then win their next six games to become bowl eligible. Mississippi State may have only gotten to this bowl because of APR but they are so much better than the Redhawks. Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald did it all for the Bulldogs, passing for 21 touchdowns and adding another 14 on the ground. Mississippi State has little trouble in this one.

Mississippi State 38, Miami (OH) 21

Quick Lane Bowl: Maryland (-1) v. Boston College - 12/26 2:30 PM EST - ESPN

This game....WOOF. Scary to think this used to be a conference game when Maryland was still in the ACC. Of course we are going to watch because it’s the day after Christmas, but we should feel bad about watching such a bad game. I guess I’ll take Boston College here because they have a bit of defense, but really that’s about the only thing they have.

Boston College 13, Maryland 10

Independence Bowl: NC State (-4) v. Vanderbilt - 12/26 5:00 PM EST - ESPN2

The Wolfpack started the season strong, while the Commodores needed to win four of their last six to become bowl eligible. NC State almost upset Clemson but the Wolfpack found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Running back Matt Dayes emerged for NC State, rushing for 1,119 yards and 10 touchdowns this year.

Vanderbilt finally was able to gain some traction under head coach Derek Mason at the end of the year. The Commodores played a number of SEC teams tough this year, and ended the regular season with an impressive victory over Tennessee. For some reason I like what Mason is doing more with Vanderbilt right more than what Dave Doeren is doing with NC State, so I’ll take the Commodores to win in Shreveport.

Vanderbilt 23, NC State 17

The Buckeyes take on the Bulldogs in their final tuneup before conference play.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team following a 37-point victory over the Youngstown State Penguins Tuesday in Columbus, which improved them to 9-3 on the season. The Buckeyes will play their third game in six days against the 8-4 Bulldogs of UNC Asheville in their final tuneup before the start of their conference schedule. Ohio State will then have more than a week to prepare for the start of Big Ten play when they open against Illinois Jan. 1.

Rebounding from a closer-than-expected loss to No. 2 UCLA, Ohio State came out strong against Youngstown State, outscoring the Penguins 42-14 in the first half on their way to a 77-40 victory. The Penguins’ 14 first half points and 21 percent field goal percentage (including 9.5 percent from behind the arc) were both season bests for the Buckeye defense.

On the other end of the court, four players scored in double digits, with Jae'Sean Tate, Kam Williams and Keita Bates-Diop all scoring 15 on the night. The team shot 50 percent from the field, and was 5-of-15 from three-point range.

Still, there is significant room for improvement for the Buckeyes. Ohio State recorded 16 turnovers Tuesday to Youngstown State’s 15--an area which has remained a consistent problem over the course of the non-conference season. The Buckeyes also continued to have issues from the free throw line, missing seven of their 17 attempts.

UNC Asheville, meanwhile, comes to Columbus after a narrow, two-point loss to UNC Greensboro Monday night. Prior to their loss, however, the Bulldogs had rattled off five-straight wins as they prepare to head into Big South Conference play, which begins against Radford on Dec. 29. Bulldogs head coach Nick McDevitt, who played at UNC Asheville from 1997-2001, is currently in his fourth season with the program. He led the Bulldogs to a conference tournament victory last season, their first since 2012. They also earned their third tournament berth in six years, losing to eventual NCAA Tournament champion Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Numbers to know

71

The number of assists that sophomore point guard Jaquan Lyle has recorded so far this season, which is good for first in the Big Ten. Lyle is averaging 5.9 assists per game, which places him 26th in the NCAA among individual players. Those numbers are also up from where Lyle was last season, when he averaged just over four assists per game. However, given his assist to turnover ratio (2.15), Lyle needs to take better care of the ball to avoid turnovers. C.J. Jackson, who has seen significant minutes behind Lyle throughout the season, has averaged 3.8 assists per game with 46 total through 12 games.

14-0

Ohio State currently holds a perfect record versus opponents from the Big South Conference, with their most recent win coming against the Panthers of High Point at home in 2014 by a 54-point margin. Of the eight conference members Ohio State has faced, the Buckeyes have played UNC Asheville with the greatest frequency, recording five of their Big South Conference wins against the Bulldogs. The Buckeyes last faced the Bulldogs at home in 2012 in a 90-72 win for Ohio State behind 18 points from Sam Thompson. UNC Asheville is the only Big South opponent that the Buckeyes will face this season, barring a postseason matchup.

29.58

Behind assistant coach Greg Paulus, Ohio State has been strong on defense all season, and are one of the best teams in the country in pulling down defensive rebounds, averaging nearly 30 per game. Their rebound margin is also well above average, as the Buckeyes grab an average of six rebounds per game more than opponents. Against the Penguins Tuesday, Ohio State brought down a season-high 42 defensive boards. Beyond rebounds, however, the Buckeyes have been absolutely stifling in total defense, holding all of their opponents thus far this season under 50 percent from the field--including UCLA, who is tops in the country in shooting percentage. The Buckeyes are also 22nd nationally in scoring defense, allowing just under 62 points per game.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Trevor Thompson

The lone consistent player on the Ohio State squad recorded his third double-double of the year versus the Penguins Tuesday with 11 points and 15 rebounds--12 of which came in the first half alone--on the night after scoring just four points against UCLA. He is an incredible asset to the Buckeye offense when he is able to control the ball down low. He also recorded three of the team’s nine blocks on the night on defense. With freshman center Micah Potter day-to-day with an ankle injury from Tuesday’s opening tip, Thompson could see more minutes or the season’s first start tonight against the Bulldogs.

Keita Bates-Diop

It has been a rough season for the junior forward, who was rebounding from a stress fracture suffered over the summer when he injured his ankle early in the season. The Buckeyes missed Bates-Diop during his five game absence, but he has come back strong in the last couple of weeks, scoring in double-digits in three of four games coming off the bench. He does have room to continue to grow, as he has been ice cold from three-point range since the second game of the season. Bates-Diop was limited to just 17 minutes against Youngstown State, but his playing time should increase as he continues to recover.

UNC Asheville

Ahmad Thomas

The 6-foot-3 guard from Virginia has been the best all-around player for the Bulldogs thus far this season. A two-year starter for UNC Asheville, Thomas has come on strong early in the season, leading his team in scoring, rebounds, steals and field goal percentage. Averaging nearly 17 points per game, Thomas has been a formidable force from behind the arc, shooting 56 percent on the season. He is also on par with Lyle in assists with 5.9 per game so far this season.

MaCio Teague

The freshman guard from Cincinnati kept things close for UNC Asheville Monday night against UNC Greensboro, scoring a team-high 29 points and hitting two of his six three pointers late in the game to narrow the gap to three before UNC Greensboro put the game away. Overall on the season, he is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.6 points per game along with 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists. He has scored in double figures on eight occasions this season, and has been getting more reliable with each game.

Yesterday, the Ohio State Buckeyes football squad was relieved of their duties until after Christmas. Once the holiday is done, the Bucks will be back making final preparations before departing for Arizona to take on the Clemson Tigers in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. While the holiday is coming quick and the biggest game of the year to date coming even faster, recruiting will take a well deserved backseat. However, that backseat won’t last too long as Urban Meyer has made it clear that recruiting never stops for Ohio State.

Wade on top, again

Just about a week ago, five-star cornerback and 2017 Ohio State commit Shaun Wade (Jacksonville, FL / Trinity Christian Academy) reaffirmed his pledge to the Buckeyes —allowing OSU recruiting followers to breathe a little easier. For some time, Alabama was a serious threat to Ohio State, but this chase is over and Wade is all set to play for the Scarlet and Gray.

Yesterday, Wade continued proving his five-star worth as he was named USA Today High School Sports American Family Insurance Defensive Player of the Year. An incredible honor, this prestigious award is a national recognition showing just how valuable Wade’s presence in the 2017 class truly is.

If you have any questions to just how superior Wade’s abilities are, you can take a look at the reasons why Wade was given the player of the year award in the USA Today HSS article. The nation’s fourth best cornerback in the country for 2017 will certainly live up to the Silver Bullet mantra if he has anything to say about it.

Holmes still trending toward OSU

In sticking with the cornerback position trend, another top defensive back prospect the Buckeyes are tremendously high on is none other than five-star Darnay Holmes. For a little while now, the Buckeyes have emerged as the new favorite for Holmes while UCLA seemed to be the longtime favorite due to the proximity to home.

On Tuesday, the rumblings on the Holmes front continued as not one, not two, but three 247sports crystal ball predictions came in for Holmes in favor of Ohio State. While he plans to announce on Jan. 7, at the US Army All-American game, the Buckeyes could be huge winners as they may receive not only a pledge from Holmes, the nation’s 2nd ranked corner, but also Jeffrey Okudah, the nation’s No. 1 corner in the 2017 class.

If Ohio State is able to land both Holmes and Okudah on Jan. 7, while having Shaun Wade already in the fold, the 2017 Buckeye recruiting class would boast having three of the top four cornerbacks in the country for 2017. If this is the case, Urban Meyer and staff have easily proven why they’re some of the top recruiters in college football.
