Containing Clemson’s Wayne Gallman early on will be key for Ohio State

Clemson will look to establish the run early.

With the star power behind center and on the perimeter of the Clemson offense, it is surprisingly easy to forget about the running back who has racked up 2,529 yards and 28 touchdowns on the ground in the past two seasons — but Wayne Gallman is one of the best in the nation.

When looking at Gallman’s situational statistics, one thing in particular stands out: Clemson wants to establish the run early. Of his 196 carries, 70 have came in the first quarter. The next highest total attempts for a quarter is in the third, where he carried the ball only 46 times. When breaking down his numbers by the quarter, the first quarter represents the most rushing yards (394), yards per carry (5.63), touchdowns (7), first downs (19) and 10-plus gains (11) — and most aren’t that close. It is clear that the Tigers want to get Gallman the ball early to set up the passing game.

What separates the Clemson running back is his elusiveness in the hole. He has the ability to make a quick cut at the line of scrimmage to gain positive yardage, when most runners would have taken a loss. When watching some of his tape, there were multiple instances where he should have been stopped in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage, but he made a quick jump cut to elude the defensive lineman and get upfield.

Here’s a good example of Gallman showing his patience behind the blocker and making the safety bite on a nasty cutback before gaining good yardage.

Here’s another good example of the runner executing a jump cut out of a clogged hole, quickly cutting back to the original hole and gaining four yards when he should have been stopped for no gain.

Even with his elite elusiveness in the hole, he is sometimes let down by his inconsistent offensive line — especially in short yardage situations. They’ve only given the ball to their stud running back 11 times on third down with 1-3 yards to go, and he was only able to move the chains on three of those 11 opportunities. Quite the opposite of what Ohio State fans are used to in his power spread offense. In a high stakes game such as the College Football Playoff, the team who can typically control time of possession and keep the ball out of the other team’s hands will be given the better chance to advance.

Here’s Gallman getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage on a third-and-one against Auburn. He had no chance.

One part of Gallman’s game that would be appreciated by Buckeye fans, is his blocking ability. Per CFB Film Room, Gallman has allowed only four hurries, three hits and zero sacks on 158 pass blocking opportunities. Sure, it’s not to the level of Ezekiel Elliott or even Mike Weber (who only let up one hurry on 48 pass blocking attempts), but it has to be one of the better percentages in the country.

The Clemson back is also a strong lead blocker for Deshaun Watson, as shown here:

Overall, Ohio State will need to find a way to counter Clemson’s ground game in the first quarter. The Tigers want to establish the run early with their lead back, before opening up the passing game in the following quarters.

If Ohio State can get an early lead, they could force Clemson to go away from their ground game and make them one dimensional. Gallman is one of the shiftier backs in the country who can make something out of nothing, but the Buckeyes front seven does hold the advantage on third-and-short. It will be interesting to see if they break their tendency of staying away from Gallman on third and less than three yards, as it has yet to work this season.

Will Ohio State make Deshaun Watson beat them with his legs and arm? Or will they allow the Tigers to get things going on the ground? It’s sure to be a chess match.

The Buckeyes have put in work since their last regular season game.

Some of the Ohio State offensive weapons took time Tuesday to talk to the media ahead of the College Football Playoff Semifinal on New Year’s Eve. Lead by quarterback J.T. Barrett, the team is excited to face Clemson football, and expect to be ready for the challenge. Also speaking were offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, running back Mike Weber, offensive guard Billy Price, center Pat Elflein and halfback Curtis Samuel.

Ed Warinner

The first to speak with the media, the coach said they are striving to be a balanced offense, being able to run and pass it, but that they love their players — including J.T. — and just need to be efficient.

Warinner said he is familiar with Clemson’s defensive scheme and with their coordinator (Brent Venables) specifically, because he’s coached in the Big 12 against him, and then again a few years ago in the Orange Bowl. He did note that Clemson isn’t a team with a lot of tendencies, and them being unpredictable makes it hard to game plan.

The OC was asked if Samuel has been a marked man lately, drawing extra attention. Warinner admitted that teams are definitely aware of where the halfback is in certain situations.

He was also impressed with the young players on the offensive line and the fact that they are making big improvements even at this point in the season. Warinner said, “I like how they prepared. They need to play really well against a talented defensive front.”

The veteran duo of Billy Price and Pat Elflein have a good mindset heading into the semifinal game and have accepted the challenge of playing at a high level. Warinner lauded, “Wow, have they worked hard this December”, citing the amount of time they’ve put in with and without coaches.

They had some help this past week too as former Buckeyes came by to help them practice, including Bobby Carpenter — who ran drills as at OLB — and Zach Boren.

Curtis Samuel

The halfback said there were a lot of talented young guys last year who just didn’t get a chance to play much thanks to the loads of NFL draftees. He quipped “you can’t be mad about it” and is excited to get his chance to step up this year.

Pat Elflein

The center said that their pass protection has “gotten a lot better” since their last regular season game. He also noted that the young lineman have improved and by going against former Ohio State legends and a talented defensive group, they’ve been able to step up their games.

Elflein also said that going from 29 days until kickoff to just 4 really shows how fast time goes and how much everyday really matters.

On playing on one of the biggest stages in college football, Elflein replied, “I know Buckeye Nation will be here, they always travel and have our back.”

— Eric Seger (@EricSeger33) December 27, 2016

Billy Price

When asked if Ohio State needs to stretch the field, Price was succinct, saying “we just need to execute.”

Price is not underestimating Clemson’s defense. He clearly understands how important it will be for the linemen to get their hands up and really protect their quarterback. He cited their strength and size as possible day-killers for the Buckeyes.

— Jerod Smalley (@JerodNBC4) December 27, 2016

With so many young players, Price emphasized the importance of leadership and helping keep them focused with so many distractions.

On what makes his quarterback J.T. Barrett unique and what he means to the team, Price said, “The intense passion side of J.T., we live, eat die football, he’s able to reach a lot of people.”

Mike Weber

“We’re going to have ups and downs throughout the season,” the running back said on criticism they’ve faced. He said especially in a conference like the Big Ten, you’re not going to win every matchup.

Big players often show up big in games like this. Weber was asked what he thinks will happen Saturday, “I expect a really big game this weekend.” He continued, “I have to rely on my teammates, my offensive line to make that happen.”

Visualization is a big part of Weber’s preparation for games. He said he thinks about it all the time, for pretty much his whole life, and he’ll play like it’s the last game he’ll ever suit up and leave it all out on the field.

One of the Buckeyes last remaining targets in the 2017 recruiting class includes OSU in his top five schools.

Ohio State wrapped up its final practice in Ohio on Monday before heading out to Glendale, Ariz. for its match up versus Clemson in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. With a full schedule ahead of the team this week combined with a recruiting dead period, it would be reasonable if recruiting was put on the back-burner this week. However, recruiting is how Urban Meyer has built this program into a juggernaut and like usual, the Buckeyes still found themselves in the recruiting headlines Monday.

The biggest news of the day happened late Monday evening when one of Ohio State’s last remaining targets in the 2017 released his top five schools. Unsurprisingly, the Buckeyes made the cut.

Jay Tufele (South Jordan, UT / Bingham) has long been associated with the Buckeyes and the coaching staff has made it apparent that he is a priority for them while closing out the class. The four-star defensive tackle listed Ohio State among his final group of five, along with hometown school Utah, Michigan, BYU and USC.

Top 5 all glory to the man above... pic.twitter.com/pOZIPkFK2w

— Jay Tufele (@tufele123) December 27, 2016

The Buckeyes have already successfully secured commitments from two of the country’s best DTs in the 2017 class in Haskell Garrett (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) and Jerron Cage (Cincinnati, OH / Winton Woods) but it seems Urban Meyer would like to add at least one more.

Tufele would be a great addition to an already loaded 2017 class. Standing at 6-foot-3, 297 pounds, Tufele ranks as the fourth-best DT in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and lands at No.56 overall.

Tufele made an official visit to Ohio State back in November when the Buckeyes defeated Michigan in double overtime. He also made an official visit to Michigan in October with official visits scheduled for both USC and Utah in January of next year.

Utah is currently seen as the favorite to land Tufele but he has yet to give any clear indications of a single favorite school. Expect Ohio State to continue recruiting Tufele up until he makes a decision.

Future Buckeyes set to participate in Under Armour All-American Week

The Under Armour All-American game will take place this Sunday and will bring together some of the best high school football players in the country. Practices will begin this week leading up to Sunday’s match up.

The biggest name to watch for Buckeye fans during this week’s UA All-American week is Marvin Wilson (Bellaire, TX / Episcopal). The five-star DT is arguably the best player in the 2017 class and is a dominant force on the line.

Once seen as a long shot, the Buckeyes have been gaining steam in Wilson’s recruitment ever since his official visit for the Michigan game and are now seen as a legitimate contender.

Wilson has taken official visits to Oklahoma, Florida State and the Buckeyes. LSU will reportedly receive an official visit from Wilson next month. USC and Texas A&M are also heavily recruiting him. With a full schedule ahead of Wilson this week and plenty of press surrounding the event, there is a good possibility we could learn more about his recruitment this week.

Four-star defensive back Markquese Bell (Bridgetown, NJ/ Bridgetown) is another Buckeye target attending this week’s festivities. Bell is set to announce his commitment Sunday and the Buckeyes could be the school of choice.

Ohio State has been paying more attention to Bell in the last couple months, receiving an official visit from him back in November as well as having assistant coach Chris Ash visit him at home. That being said, Maryland seems to be the leader in his recruitment with Virginia Tech gaining momentum as well.

Three current Buckeye commits will also be in attendance for the All-American game this week including four-star DB Marcus Williamson (Bradenton, FL / IMG Academy) and his teammate four-star safety Isiah Pryor. The two will be joined by five-star WR Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas).

LGHL Ohio State’s Luke Fickell has the roughest schedule in coaching right now

Ohio State’s Luke Fickell has the roughest schedule in coaching right now
Meredith Hein
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_9737724.0.jpeg

From trying to get one team a berth in the CFP title game to helping another rebuild, Fickell is pulling double duty this holiday season.

“It’s tough right now. You’re still doing double duty, still getting prepared for a game and a playoff run, so you’re not entirely separating yourself. Once I separate myself, I don’t think I’ll have any problem. But it’s that ability to separate yourself depending on which shirt you’re wearing, and I’m very conscious about it.”

-Luke Fickell, via Austin Ward, ESPN

Luke Fickell’s decision to stay with the Ohio State Buckeyes as co-defensive coordinator as they prepare for the College Football Playoff--all after accepting the head coaching job with the Cincinnati Bearcats--means that he is now pulling one of the toughest schedules of any coach in the country at the moment.

Not only is Fickell getting acquainted with his new players, hiring new staff and familiarizing himself with his new facilities, he is also tasked with learning a new city. A Columbus native, Fickell stuck around Ohio State for most of his coaching career after playing nose guard for four years under John Cooper. The week before Christmas found Fickell travelling the 100-plus miles between Columbus and Cincinnati as he went from preparing the Buckeyes for their matchup with Clemson New Year's’ Eve to Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati to start his role as the Bearcats’ new head coach. The Wednesday before Christmas, Fickell assisted with the Buckeyes’ last workout before the holiday break until noon, went to more film study and coaches meetings, went to his son’s basketball game, then, finally, went to Cincinnati for a staff meeting which only began at 10:20 p.m.

While his experience as a head coach was limited to the year spent as interim following the departure of Jim Tressel at Ohio State, Fickell has been in this position before, which has provided insight into the situation. He also has a long list of mentors to call on, dating back to his playing days at Ohio State. Even his most recent experience at Ohio State under Urban Meyer, while perhaps the toughest stretch of his career, has proven valuable moving into a head coaching role. Meyer has admitted that he did not want to keep Fickell on the staff at Ohio State, especially following the Buckeyes’ Orange Bowl loss in 2013 to Clemson, but that Fickell has grown from the experience and was crucial in turning the Ohio State defense into one of the nation’s best in subsequent years.

“I know one thing about J.T. and that’s if there’s a chance, he’ll get it. He has those characteristics. How many people are like that?”

-Urban Meyer, via Paul Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports

For the most part, things have gone to plan during Urban Meyer’s tenure at Ohio State. With five losses in five seasons to go along with two trips to the College Football Playoff, Meyer’s success has largely been predicated on a strong quarterback--a factor which remains the same for each of his previous coaching stops. Now, behind J.T. Barrett, Meyer has, in his mind, found the quarterback with the perfect set of characteristics to lead the team on the field, and a player who, someday in the future, could fill Meyer’s own coaching role at Ohio State.

Meyer picked up many of these requirements from former Cal coach Jeff Tedford, who trained Aaron Rodgers in his time with the Golden Bears. Tedford emphasized the need for a quarterback to be both the most competitive and toughest player on the field. He also must possess leadership skills, bring intelligence to the position and, finally, the ability to extend plays. Everything else can be learned, but those other components must come naturally. When recruiting Barrett, a four-star recruit from Texas, Meyer and the coaching staff looked beyond mere stats and film to how Barrett performed in such situations as fourth-down plays, to evaluate his strength under pressure, and in rivalry games to evaluate his competitiveness. Perhaps the biggest test for Barrett, however, came following his season-ending injury in the 2014 Michigan game, when he remained a leader off the field for a team that won the national championship with a different quarterback under center.

Now, while no one doubts Barrett’s off the field contribution to the 2014 team’s post-season success, a win in the College Football Playoff this season of Barrett’s own would seal his legacy as the central figure of success on the field for the Buckeyes, mirroring that of Meyer on the sideline.

“Every player has a checklist of what they want to do, what they want to accomplish. That was another one of those ‘check it off, you worked your butt off so much and you’re being acknowledged as one of the best in the nation.’ That’s such a huge honor for me, and I was super excited about it.”

-Ohio State guard Billy Price, via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

It may have come as a surprise to some when Ohio State Buckeyes center Pat Elflein won the Rimington Award as the nation’s top center earlier this month. After all, this was just Elflein’s first season at center for Ohio State, having previously played as a guard. However, he, along with right guard Billy Price, have provided needed stability on an Ohio State offensive line which was breaking in three new starters. Both Price, a fourth-year junior, and Elflein, a fifth-year senior, were among the seven team captains named prior to the start of the season--a testament to their leadership on the line in front of J.T. Barrett.

And now, they will be the first two standing All-American linemen to play alongside one another at Ohio State in more than 40 years as Elflein was named a consensus All-American, and Price to the American Football Coaches Association Team. The last pair to do so was tackle Kurt Schumacher and center Steve Myers in 1974. Along with their All-American recognition comes another honor in the form of buckeye trees being planted at Buckeye Grove south of the stadium, one each for Elflein and Price.

Elflein was first called into serious action against Michigan in 2013 following the ejection of Marcus Hall early in the game. From there, he and Price, who earned a starting spot the following season, became part of one of the most improved offensive lines in college football and which ultimately blocked for Ezekiel Elliott’s prolific performance in the inaugural College Football Playoff.

Now, the pair is tasked with blocking Clemson’s powerful defensive front, which boasts two outstanding defensive tackles attempting to exploit Elflein and Price at center and guard. While the All-American recognition puts somewhat of a target on the pair, the pressure, they say, is nothing new.

Pick-6’s and hard-hitting sacks have become the norm for several professional Buckeyes.

In the final stretch of the 2016 NFL regular season, several former Ohio State players suited up on Christmas Day, while other sat our or were forced out with injuries. Rookie Joey Bosa threw up an O-H-I-O after a big sack against the Browns, and Malcolm Jenkins had two interceptions in Week 16 — one for a touchdown.

Christmas Day football

Four teams suited up on Sunday, December 25th, including three Buckeyes. The first game was an AFC North rivalry matchup of the Pittsburgh Steelers (Ryan Shazier) against the Baltimore Ravens. The night game was The Denver Broncos (Jeff Heuerman, Bradley Roby) against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Steelers snagged a late game win Sunday, with the help of linebacker Ryan Shazier, who had a big day with 10 total tackles and an interception. He’s riding a big year with 79 total tackles, 8 passes defended, 3.5 sacks and two picks.

Tight end Jeff Heuerman got the start for the Broncos on Sunday night, and saw the most targets of the season (6). The second year players caught 3-of-6 for 32 yards against the Chiefs. Cornerback Bradley Roby didn’t see much playing time in Week 16, but still has 36 total tackles, 1.0 sacks and two Pick-6’s so far this year.

Hyde’s season finale

The running back for the San Francisco 49ers will miss the final game of the year after suffering a torn MCL on Christmas Eve against the Rams. Plagued by injuries throughout the season, Carlos Hyde was just 12 yards shy of his first career 1,000-rushing yard season. He finished the year with a career-high 1,151 yards from scrimmage, and scored one last touchdown before being sidelined.

Cleveland wins!

The Browns got their Christmas miracle on Saturday, as they got their first team win in 2016 against the Chargers. Wideout Terrelle Pryor committed to finishing the season despite injuring his finger last week suffering ligament damage. The Buckeye has 913 receiving yards so far this year and could snag his 1,000-plus yard season with a big game in Week 17.

Plays of the week

Joey Bosa

The rookie defensive end put up 2.0 sacks against the Browns Saturday, drilling quarterback Robert Griffin III into the ground all day. He passed on his signature shrug after one of the takedowns, instead putting up an O-H-I-O. Bosa has 9.5 sacks so far and is looking for a possible Defensive Rookie of the Year honor.

Malcolm Jenkins

There are few things as exciting as a Pick-6, and it’s even better when it’s a former Buckeye. Jenkins snagged his second Pick-6 of the season and added a third interception late in the game on ‘Thursday Night Football’ against the Giants.

Other notes

  • The running back leaving everyone else in his dust, will suit up against the SLOB who used to protect him weekly at Ohio State on ‘Monday Night Football’. The Dallas Cowboys (Ezekiel Elliott, Rod Smith) will challenge the Detroit Lions (Taylor Decker) as both teams get ready for the postseason.
  • Several Buckeyes were inactive this week, with Jalin Marshall (Jets), Cardale Jones (Bills), Tyvis Powell and Nick Vannett (Seahawks) missing Week 16 action.
  • John Simon (Texans) returned to the field Saturday for the first time in a month. He rehabbed 12-hours a day in order to get before the end of the season, and he did with one more week left to play.
  • After missing the majority of the season, followed by two games with only special team snaps, wide receiver Devin Smith (Jets) had some offensive targets in Week 16. A touchdown catch went right through his hands, but he was able to snag one reception for 20 yards against New England.
  • Last week’s Monday night contest included several Buckeyes who made BIG plays, including an interception made by Kurt Coleman (Panthers) and a long touchdown reception by teammate Ted Ginn Jr.
