The Big Ten’s 2016 Defensive Lineman of the Year isn’t going anywhere.

Tyquan Lewis has led Ohio State in sacks for two straight seasons. The junior defensive end will attempt to make it three in a row in 2017, as he will return for one final season in Columbus, per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

Lewis, the 2016 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year and a two-year starter, paced the Buckeyes in sacks (eight) and tackles for loss (10.5) this season. As a sophomore, Lewis posted a team-best eight sacks and was second to Joey Bosa with 14 tackles for loss.

The North Carolina native developed a knack for the limelight in 2016. He registered the walk-off sack in Ohio State’s overtime win at Wisconsin, and at Michigan State, Lewis tallied a forced fumble and 1.5 sacks, including a sack on the Spartans’ potential game-winning drive. He was a big reason the Buckeyes defense finished their season ranked second in the country in scoring defense, third in defensive S&P+, and fifth in total defense.

A former four-star recruit who recently graduated with a sociology degree, Lewis redshirted the 2013 season before seeing action in all 15 contests during Ohio State’s national title run in 2014.

LGHL A way too early projection of Ohio State’s 2017 offensive depth chart

A way too early projection of Ohio State’s 2017 offensive depth chart
Matt Brown
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

usa_today_9786468.0.jpg

The 2016 season is in the books. Let’s look at what 2017 might look like.

The 2016 Ohio State season is over, and even though the team still made the playoff, knocked off multiple top-ten programs, and beat Michigan in a way that’s guaranteed their fans will be mad all summer, the season ended on a sour note, and has raised some questions for Buckeye fans. The offense has now sputtered for two consecutive seasons, and now there’s an assistant coaching shakeup.

We know that Ryan Day, and almost certainly Kevin Wilson, will be working as offensive coaches, although we don’t know exactly how everybody will fit together yet. But what about the players?

It’s early. We don’t know exactly who is headed to the NFL yet, and who is staying, or how the 2017 recruiting class might factor in. But everybody is thinking about it anyway, so here’s our first guess on how Ohio State’s 2017 depth chart might look on offense for next season.

Quarterback:

J.T. Barrett (RS Senior)

Dwayne Haskins (RS Freshman)

There are probably some Buckeye fans who wouldn’t mind if Barrett lost his job, or at least had a real QB competition, given the talent in this QB room. But given how highly Kevin Wilson thinks of Barrett, his experience, leadership, comfort level with the zone-read, and the youth of the other potential challengers, somebody other than Barrett holding down this starting job would be a major surprise. We like Haskins to beat out Joe Burrow for the backup spot, but that should be a real battle. They’re both good!

Running Back:

Mike Weber (RS Sophomore)

Antonio Williams (RS Freshman)

No surprise here, after a 1,000+ yard plus campaign as a freshman, this is 100% Weber’s job. The only question will be whether he increases his carries, or splits them with Williams, H-backs, or other running backs, like incoming freshman J.K. Dobbins.

h-back:

Demario McCall (Sophomore)

J.K. Dobbins (Freshman) OR Tyjon Lindsey (Freshman)

We’re operating on the assumption that Curtis Samuel decides to go to the NFL (something that isn’t a slam dunk by any means). Obviously, if he sticks around, he’s manning this spot and remaining the focal point of the offense. McCall, a highly rated recruit who exploded multiple times during garbage time in 2016, looks primed to get lots of touches in this spot next season.

Tight End:

Marcus Baugh (RS Senior)

A.J. Alexander (RS Sophomore)

No big surprises here, as Baugh has locked down this spot for a while, and flashed at times in 2016. Jake Hausmann has the most upside of the backups in this group, but A.J. Alexander may be the superior blocker, and has the edge in experience. We think he holds on to the backup spot, and grabs a few more snaps this season.

Wideout-X

Noah Brown (RS Junior)

K.J. Hill (RS Sophomore)

Now, the position group of great suspense. Brown started last season, was praised all throughout camp, had a monster game against Oklahoma, and then otherwise disappointed during the year. Hill came on stronger as the season went along, pushing for more playing time. Who “starts” might be moot, since both players will assuredly play, and we’ll give Brown the slight edge, given his blocking ability and experience.

Wideout

Ben Victor (Sophomore)

Parris Campbell (RS Junior) OR Terry McLaurin (RS Junior)

Another possible arbitrary distinction, as both are likely to play, although Victor’s size and polish forced Ohio State’s coaches to put him on the field near the end of the season. Campbell has struggled over the last two seasons, but the potential is there, and we figure he’ll still get plenty of snaps. Other plays, like Austin Mack and Trevon Grimes, will push for playing time at this spot as well.

Left Tackle

Jamarco Jones (Senior)

Branden Bowen (RS Sophomore)

It would be a big upset for Jones to lose this spot. Bowen has appeared on the two deep already, and could play either tackle position if Jones went down.

Left Guard

Michael Jordan (Sophomore)

Wyatt Davis (Freshman)

Jordan showed he was a true freshman starting at Ohio State at times last season, but all things considered, acquitted himself very well, and shows he has a bright future on the line for the Buckeyes. His backup isn’t immediately clear right now, but Ohio State is bringing in a five star, Wyatt Davis, who is ranked as the top guard in the country. He’s probably good enough to not redshirt.

Center

Billy Price (Senior)

Brady Taylor (RS Junior)

Go ahead and write this one in pen, as Price has already announced he’s returning, and planning on sliding over to center.

Right Guard

Malcolm Pridgeon (RS Junior)

Demetrius Knox (RS Junior)

This is the position we feel the least confident about. If Prince is unable to hold on to his job at tackle, then Pridgeon could move over there, leaving this position open. Evan Lisle, who was the listed backup during the season, could be a factor. Our best guess is that Pridgeon, who likely would have started in 2016 had he not suffered a season-ending injury, grabs this spot.

Right Tackle

Isaiah Prince (Junior)

Josh Myers (Freshman)

Sure, Prince struggled this season, at times badly. But given the comments from the coaching staff, it doesn’t appear that Meyer and company have lost faith in him. Prince has great measurables and a great worth ethic, and our guess is that he’s given every opportunity to hang on to this job. There are plenty of possibilities if he can’t though, from Pridgeon, to five-star recruit Myers, to a slew a RS freshmen and sophomores.

There’s a lot of familiar faces on this list, as freshmen and sophomores become sophomores and juniors. But there’s also the possibility for serious reshuffling at wideout and along the offensive line. The good news for Ohio State fans is there’s plenty of talented options to choose from at both positions.

Ohio State will try and rebound for Sunday night’s loss to Illinois when they host Purdue tonight at Value City Arena.

Ohio State has been nearly unbeatable in Big Ten home openers under Thad Matta, but the Buckeyes will face a tough challenge tonight when they host Caleb Swanigan and the Purdue Boilermakers. In his 13th season at Ohio State, Matta has amassed an 11-1 record in Big Ten home openers, with the only loss coming in the 2014-15 Big Ten home opener against Iowa.

The Buckeyes found themselves down 11 points at halftime to Illinois on Sunday night, but a stretch of 16 straight points from guard JaQuan Lyle helped Ohio State claw back into the game. Lyle finished with a game-high 26 points, but his season-high scoring effort wasn’t quite enough to lead the Buckeyes to victory. Marc Loving and Kam Williams were the only other Buckeyes to reach double figures in the scoring column, scoring 10 points each.

Even though Lyle was the main source of offense against Illinois, Ohio State has been pretty balanced on offense this year. Currently five Buckeyes are averaging at least 10 points per game, with Jae’Sean Tate leading the team with 13.9 points per game. JaQuan Lyle, Marc Loving, Kam Williams, and Trevor Thompson are the other Buckeyes who are averaging double figures so far this year.

Ohio State is close to having a sixth player reach 10 points per game, as Keita Bates-Diop is averaging 9.7 points per game. Bates-Diop is still trying to work his way back into game shape after suffering a shin stress fracture during the offseason, followed by a sprained ankle against Providence early in the season which caused him to miss the next five games. In three of the last four games Bates-Diop has come off the bench to play 25 minutes, as the junior continues to show signs that he is getting closer to being fully healthy.

Ohio State and Purdue historically have played a close series, with the Boilermakers holding a slight 85-83 edge over the Buckeyes. Ohio State has had more success as of late, winning 25 of the 33 matchups since the start of the 1998-99 season, and Matta has posted an 18-7 record against Purdue. The Buckeyes have been nearly unbeatable at Value City Arena against the Boilermakers, winning 13 of 14 meetings, with the only Purdue win coming back in 2010. The last time these two teams met was last year in West Lafayette, with Purdue earning a 75-64 victory.

Purdue has split their first two Big Ten games this year, beating Iowa last Wednesday before falling in overtime to Minnesota in West Lafayette on Sunday. Swanigan registered his fourth game with 20 points and 20 rebounds this year, finishing with 28 points and 22 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Gophers pulled away in overtime.

The Purdue offense has been outstanding all year long, scoring at least 80 points in 10 of 15 games this year. Currently the Boilermakers have scored 82 points or more in five straight games. The last time Purdue scored at least 82 points in six straight games was in December 1997. While Swanigan has shouldered a large amount of the offensive workload, he hasn’t done all the work himself. 13 times last year Purdue had a player score at least 20 points in a game. This year they have already matched that number, with five different players hitting that mark so far.

What has allowed for Purdue to put up such impressive offensive numbers has been how well they distribute the basketball. The Boilermakers are second in the country in assists, averaging 20.3 assists per game. Purdue has dished out at least 20 assists in eight of their 15 games this year. In the loss to Minnesota, Dakota Mathias became the first Boilermaker since Lewis Jackson in 2012 to register 10 assists in a game. Mathias and P.J. Thompson not only dish out assists, but they are great at protecting the basketball, as they are the only duo to rank in the assist-to-turnover ratio top 25.

Numbers to know

143

Thad Matta will get his second crack this year to try and break a tie for 13th on the Big Ten’s all-time regular season victories list. Currently Matta is tied with Harold “Bud” Foster, who coached at Wisconsin from 1935 to 1959. After Matta passes Foster he can set his sights on former Ohio State coach Harold Olsen, who won 154 Big Ten games from 1923 to 1946.

6-4

He is never the tallest player on the court, but more often than not Jae’Sean Tate plays like it. The junior is one of just two Power Five Conference players 6-4 or shorter to average at least six rebounds per game, with the other being Markelle Fultz of Washington. The 6.9 rebounds per game Tate averages ranks 11th in the country among players who are 6-4 or shorter. In the loss to Illinois, Tate was one rebound away from his fourth game of the season with at least 10 rebounds.

52.6%

This year Purdue is shooting a lot better on the road from behind the arc than they are at home. The Boilermakers are shooting 52.6% from three-point range on the road, compared to just 35% at Mackey Arena. The three-point shooting has cooled at bit for Purdue though, as on December 11th they led the country, hitting 44.3% of their three-pointers. Since then the Boilermakers have shot just 33% from three over their last five games, dropping to 15th in country in three-point percentage.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Trevor Thompson

For most of the year Trevor Thompson has provided a spark for Ohio State off the bench. The junior has four double-doubles, which is the most among players who are averaging 22 minutes or fewer per game. Thompson’s minutes per game could be on the rise though, as the junior has started the last three games for the Buckeyes. Thompson will need to be at the top of his game tonight as Ohio State looks to slow down Caleb Swanigan.

JaQuan Lyle

The sophomore guard showed just how much of a game-changer he can be on Sunday, when he scored 16 straight points to help Ohio State get back into the game. Lyle ended up finishing the game with a season-high 26 points. While most of the focus was on Lyle’s scoring on Sunday, what might have been most impressive was the guard didn’t turn the basketball over in the game, marking the first time this season where he had zero turnovers in a game.

Purdue

Caleb Swanigan

There isn’t a player in the country playing better basketball than Caleb Swanigan right now. The sophomore has been a monster this year for Purdue, averaging 18.5 points per game and 13.0 rebounds per game. Swanigan already has four games this year of 20 points and 20 rebounds. Over the last 20 years, there has only been two other games in which a Big Ten player has accomplished that feat. Swanigan is tied for the most double-doubles in the country this year, putting up at least 10 points and 10 rebounds in 12 of Purdue’s 15 games.

P.J. Thompson

The junior guard from Indianapolis has the top assist-to-turnover ratio in the country so far this year, averaging 4.91 assists for every turnover. In 15 games this year, Thompson has only turned the basketball over 11 times. Since the beginning of last season, Thompson has committed zero turnovers in 29 games, with Purdue posting a 23-6 record during that span.

This is good news for the Buckeyes in their attempt for the 4-star Utah product.

Out of state is an option

With National Signing Day about one month away, Urban Meyer and Ohio State are prepared to put the finishing touches on an already tremendous recruiting class for the 2017 cycle. As of Wednesday night, the Buckeyes stand at No. 2 in the recruiting rankings—just behind Alabama. The targets still on the board for the Scarlet and Gray will give Ohio State an opportunity to make this a closer race with the Crimson Tide and maybe even surpass an equally outstanding class put together by Nick Saban.

One target the Buckeyes are looking to reel in is ‘17 defensive tackle Jay Tufele from Bingham (UT). The four-star prospect from out west is currently graded out as the 56th overall player in the class, the fourth best defensive tackle and the top player from the Beehive State.

The day after Christmas, Tufele announced his top five schools.

Top 5 all glory to the man above... pic.twitter.com/pOZIPkFK2w

— Jay Tufele (@tufele123) December 27, 2016

Yesterday, in a published interview with Brandon Justice of Landof10.com, Tufele mentioned that he’s going to go to the place that is best for him. “If that’s to go out-of-state, than I will go out-of-state.”

In regards to the Buckeyes in general, Larry Johnson has done an outstanding job here. The staff was able to get Tufele on campus in November as he took a visit to Columbus to watch Ohio State defeat Michigan in double overtime. Tufele relayed to Justice that it was “really cool” to be in Ohio Stadium and that it would be “really awesome” to play in The Game one day.

Right now, the Buckeyes have received 20 percent of predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. They are the only other non-Utah team to receive a prediction that is included in his Top five. The expectation for now is that Tufele will announce on NSD, so if Ohio State is in the lead, they will have the opportunity to close the door. If not, they have about one month to change his mind.

No decision yet for Holmes

With Saturday just two days away, Ohio State coaches and fans will have their eyes locked on the Army All-America game. The main reason being ‘17 safety Jeffrey Okudah and cornerback Darnay Holmes will be making their collegiate declarations.

Ohio State certainly seems like the odds on favorite to land Okudah. As for Holmes, things definitely seem to be more up-in-the-air. As of Wednesday, in an interview with Jeremy Birmingham of Landof10.com, Holmes states that he has not made a decision yet. The Calabasas (CA) standout did tell Birmingham that he will have a set decision when his family arrives in San Antonio. When will that be? Later today according to Holmes.

Browning ready to fill McMillan void

On Wednesday, the Ohio State defense took a major —yet expected— hit when starting middle linebacker Raekwon McMillan announced his plans to forego his senior season in Columbus to enter the NFL Draft. For now, the expectation is that Dante Booker will likely be the guy to step in with the loss of McMillan.

With that being said, ‘17 outside linebacker Baron Browning of Kennedale (TX) certainly doesn’t lack the confidence to be that guy instead. The five-star standout revealed to Bill Kurelic of 247Sports that he hasn’t played inside since his freshman year in high school. However, the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder stated that he wants to “come in, earn a spot and contribute” for the Buckeyes when he enrolls.

All-Big Ten Buckeye is coming back for another season.

Despite a second annual exodus of top-line talent from Columbus, Ohio to the NFL, on Wednesday night, All-Big Ten defensive end Jalyn Holmes announced on his Instagram that he would be returning to the Horseshoe for his senior season.

The Norfolk, VA native finished the 2016 season with 33 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, good for third on the team. Following the departures of defensive stalwarts Gareon Conley, Raekwon McMillan, and Malik Hooker, Holmes will likely be looked upon to provide consistency and leadership to a defense that will again be infused with an influx of young players.

OTTAWA, ON – DECEMBER 29: Former Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings player Daniel Alfredsson helps to unfurl his jersey retirement banner along with Erik Karlsson #65, Chris Neil #25 and former player Chris Phillips of the Ottawa Senators xprior to a game against the Detroit Red Wings at Canadian Tire Centre on December 29, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. From Daniel Alfredsson’s magical retirement ceremony to the team’s recent three-game losing streak to the performance of the team’s prospects at the World Junior Championships, it was quite the up and down week for Senators fans.

As a franchise that takes its share of grief from fans who bemoan the organization’s penchant for their disregard or tradition or for bungling what should be relatively easy marketing or PR decisions, no one can knock the way the Senators do ceremonies.

Once again, they killed it with their pre-game ceremony that not only honoured Alfredsson but it also carried the distinction of having Alfie be the first modern day player to have his number retired by the organization.

From the subtlety of having former GM Randy Sexton hand Alfredsson a jersey in the dressing room prior to Alfie walking out onto the ice, to fashion sense of Alfredsson’s kids including Hugo’s gold shoes, to only allowing Daniel’s brother Henrik and Wade Redden handle the speeches, everything was masterfully executed. (Yes, even the inclusion of U2 as a soundtrack to the event. You don’t even have to say anything, I know.)

The event itself was so good that you didn’t even need to be Alfie’s dad to get emotional during the event because the memories just flooded back.

There was the 1995-95 Calder Trophy, his six All-Star appearances, the 2002-03 President’s Trophy season, Alfie following up his hit on Darcy Tucker by scoring the game-winning goal in game five of the Eastern Conference semi-finals versus the Maple Leafs, there was the franchise defining game-winning goal in the 2007 Eastern Conference Final versus Buffalo, his seven-point night versus the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 25, 2008 and finally, there was his Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award for his 2012-13 season.

It wasn’t all good memories however.

It was difficult sitting there watching it without thinking about how many good teams Alfredsson was a part of or how many the organization’s window of contention was undone by untimely goaltending and John Muckler’s reign as the general manager.

As easy as it was to be flooded with these emotions, it was impossible to ignore the underlying message of, “Hey Erik Karlsson, pay attention because you can shape your legacy and this will happen for you should you choose to remain in Ottawa.”

Now I can’t stand the fear mongering that exists over’s Karlsson’s future because he only has two and a half years remaining on a team-friendly contract that makes him an unrestricted free agent in July of 2019 – with that uncertain future, a lot of fans view Ottawa’s ability to win through the prism that they have to do it during Karlsson’s prime while he’s under contract. (As an aside, his skating and offensive ability is so elite that I imagine he’ll be the sort of player who will age gracefully. Provided the Senators can extend him, there’s no reason to suggest that a window of contention with Karlsson in tow can’t be significantly larger than previously suggested.)

From being mentioned by Dean Brown as the object of adulation for all of Alfredsson’s children to helping raise the commemorative banner, you didn’t have to look too closely to notice that the generational talent was present throughout during the ceremony.

Despite giving unexpected shoutouts to players like Chris Dahlquist and Kerry Huffman, Alfredsson singled out Karlsson in his speech.

Erik, I am so proud of you being the captain of this team and I know you will continue that Senators tradition of giving it your best every shift.”

Yes, the long standing tradition that took hold since Yashin held out and vacated the captaincy.

May Karlsson remain a Senator forever.

Mendes’ TSN Article on Alfie

In the days leading up to Alfredsson’s jersey retirement, Ian Mendes’ published a thought-provoking article on TSN that discusses how the Senators have seemingly lost their identity since Alfredsson’s decision to sign as a free agent with Detroit in July of 2013. If you haven’t already, give it a read.

Mendes fittingly used 1,111 words to describe how Alfredsson’s departure may have contributed to this fan base’s apathy towards the Senators.

Ottawa’s waning attendance figures have been a well-documented problem, but I believe ticket sales, lukewarm interest in the club despite its modest success this season extends beyond the notion that Alfredsson’s departure created a void or “stalled the progress of this franchise and muddied the picture for three years.”

Don’t get me wrong, Alfie’s departure not only tainted his legacy but left a black mark of this franchise for its part in bungling his contract negotiations, but truth be told, there some unintended benefits that came from Alfie’s departure.

Case in point, the announcement of Alfie signing a token contract in 2014 to retire as a Senator and participating in the team’s pre-game skate before the Senators’ December 4, 2014 game versus the Islanders never would have happened had Alfie remained a career Senator. So even though his legacy was no longer intact, at least this moment and the announcement that the Senators had appointed him as a senior advisor of hockey operations helped mitigate some of the lingering animosity.

For the most part, it’s water under the bridge now, but does that mean that the Alfredsson departure didn’t or doesn’t still hurt?

Fuck no, but Alfredsson’s decision to leave for the Red Wings was never a death knell for this franchise nor was it the predominant reason why some have become disenchanted with the Senators.

For many, it begins and ends with ownership.

The sad reality for many is that they have waning confidence in Eugene Melnyk and his ability to deliver a winner.

This goes beyond the simple focus on Ottawa’s player payroll.

A lot of fans refuse to accept the reality of Ottawa’s internal budget – complaining to no end about how the budget precludes the Senators from papering over their mistakes or having the creative flexibility to upgrade the roster by only spending a bit more money.

It’s a groan-inducing waste of energy.

These fans should know by now who the Senators are and what financial limitations they have, but at times, you can’t help but beyond the fans, I can’t help but wonder whether this organization truly embrace how their limited resources can forge their identity and positively impact the way it operates.

It’s not like having limitless resources precludes teams from certain pitfalls of its own.

Free agency represents one of the most inefficient ways to exhaust finite resources on perceived upgrades.

Big market teams frequently fall into the trap of spending money simply because they have money or because they acquiesce to the pressures of the fans and media.

In Ottawa’s case, the call to win is intense because of the demands ownership places on management to reach the postseason.

Thanks to one of Canada’s smallest season ticket bases and rumours about the owner’s liquidity problems, the belief is that short-term competitiveness and playoff gate revenues are put ahead of everything because Melnyk desperately needs this team to be profitable.

The polarizing owner’s passion has often led to portrayals of him as a meddlesome Jerry Jones’esque figure (just without the money or resources) whose influence and mandate have significantly contributed to Ottawa’s annual playoff bubble team label.

Fortunately, the performance of the team’s prospects — Jonathan Dahlen, Thomas Chabot, Colin White and Filip Chlapik and Filip Ahl — at the World Junior Championships has helped fuel some optimism for the future.

Alfredsson Scholarship

As if the Alfredsson jersey retirement story could not get any better, the Senators announced a scholarship in partnership with Bell’s ‘Let’s Talk’ and Carleton University to honour the former captain’s commitment to mental health awareness.

Meyer has studied Wilson going back to 2000. Now it’s time for them to make magic in Columbus.

“Meyer has long admired Wilson from afar. Now they get to work together.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Meyer has had his eye on Wilson for a while now. Maybe not necessarily to get him into a coaching capacity, but just what he had been producing on the field at Northwestern back in 2000 caught his eye. Wilson’s offense was third in the country in yards per game that season. "We studied them relentlessly," Meyer told Landis last year. "They were dynamic." The offense will mostly remain the same, as Meyer and Wilson have similar philosophies.

"It's spread, but it's a spread that includes a physical running attack and a physical style and a soundness, and it's well coached," Wilson told ESPN.com in 2012, per Landis. Indiana has given Ohio State fits the past couple of seasons. Indiana had the No. 14 offense in the country in 2015, which took a national championship favored Ohio State team to the brink. Now, Wilson and Meyer will combine to hopefully take a crop of young players, and create another national championship winning team.

“It was about two months after Ohio State lost to Virginia Tech in 2014 that Tyler Murphy realized exactly how much Ryan Day was helping him grow as a quarterback.”

- Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Tyler Murphy was a quarterback at Boston College, and was able to put up 33 points on Virginia Tech, who held Ohio State to 21 points in that same 2014 season. His quarterbacks coach was none other than Ryan Day, and the help that Day gave him helped him improve immensely. "A team like Virginia Tech, defensively they're gonna give you so many looks," Murphy told Landis. "He did a great job of preparing me for all of the looks. I felt comfortable that he felt comfortable, doing what he felt was best to attack Virginia Tech and we went on to beat them."

Murphy also noted that the style was similar. "We pretty much ran the same system," Murphy said. "He's walking into a system (at Ohio State) where things might be a little different but he'll be able to pick it up quickly because the two offenses come from the root of the same system." This should be encouraging to hear from a former player of Day’s considering what he’s going to be tasked with doing, which is helping fix an Ohio State offense that has largely held them back the past two seasons.

“Over the course of the Urban Meyer era at Ohio State, problem solving has been refined into an art.”

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

New Year’s Eve wasn’t really fun for anybody involved with Ohio State football, whether you were a player, fan, coach, you name it. But one thing that has been great about the Urban Meyer era in Columbus, is that things are never bad for long. After winning the national title, the Buckeyes had sky-high expectations, and while they came up short against Michigan State, halting their playoff hopes, it was still a dang good year. With a slower season expected in 2016, the Buckeyes made the playoff with a ridiculously young team. Ohio State is losing players to the draft yet again, but the youth movement is going to provide a smoother transition into 2017.

“Ohio State is not used to this,” Meyer said, via Ginn. “I’m not used to this, and we will not get used to this. That’s not going to happen again. So we’ll get things worked out.” The changes have already started happening. Tim Beck left for Texas, and now Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day are tasked with helping fix the offense. J.T. Barrett announced today that he would be coming back for his senior season. Mike Weber had a phenomenal freshman season, one of the best in Ohio State history, and if the Buckeyes are able to get right at wide receiver, there’s no telling how good they could be next season. One thing is for sure, and it’s that the Buckeyes won’t be reeling for long.
