LGHL What K’Vaughan Pope Brings To Ohio State

What K’Vaughan Pope Brings To Ohio State

The longtime Buckeye lean is finally in the fold. What does it mean?

Buckeye fans are likely very familiar with the name K’Vaughan Pope at this point. The Dinwiddie, Virginia linebacker has been on Ohio State’s radar for months, and anyone who follows recruiting at the most basic level has heard the rumblings of a possible commitment since April. Due to a number of obstacles, mainly the space (or lack thereof) in Ohio State’s 2018 class, Pope, despite a desire to commit to Ohio State back in July, had to wait, and was encouraged to look elsewhere.

However, after sitting down and looking at the numbers, as well as at Pope’s tape, Ohio State, and more importantly Urban Meyer, was sold on the LB, and he was given the green light to commit to the team he’s wanted to be a part of since visiting on April 1st. Fresh off of a visit to Georgia on July 20th, Pope announced that he’d be committing at his high school on August 4th.

Despite that announcement’s timing with the Georgia visit, there was never really any doubt about where he’d be landing, the only question was if OSU would have room for him. Just moments ago, that question was answered with a resounding “yes”, as K’Vaughan Pope announced his official commitment to Ohio State over Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, and Florida, among others at his high school. Pope is the first in what may be a “Boom”-heavy August. Here’s what he brings to the team and the 2018 class.

ON THE FIELD

Pope’s ability on the field is undeniable. He’s got prototypical linebacker size, albeit with a little more weight to add, and a massive ceiling because of his athleticism. He doesn’t have fantastic speed, and will certainly end up as an inside linebacker at Ohio State because of his lack of elite top-end speed, but he’s absurdly strong, and plays with more power than just about any other linebacker in the country.

He plays on both sides of the ball for his high school team, and essentially just serves as a tank on offense, which he carries over to his defensive style as well. He lines up as a running back, tight end, wide receiver, pretty much anywhere you can imagine, and just destroys defenses with his strength and power.

That hard-hitting, physically imposing style transitions extremely well to the defense, as he frequently blows up the run with his hitting ability, while his natural athleticism lets him run with backs and tight ends in coverage. He’s never going to a quarterback-seeking missile like Darron Lee was, but he’s the linebacker equivalent of a sledgehammer in run coverage, and his tape reminds me a lot of former Buckeye and current Dolphin Raekwon McMillan.

IN THE CLASS

Pope is the 17th recruit in Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class, and the third (or possibly fourth depending on where Andrew Chatfield ends up) linebacker, along with Dallas Gant and fellow Virginian Teradja Mitchell. Mitchell and Pope are relatively similar players, but Mitchell is a bit bigger, while Pope has a higher athletic peak. They’ll complement each other very well.

He’s the second recruit from Virginia, along with the aforementioned Pope, and serves as a sign of change, as Virginia continues to grow as a pipeline for Ohio State under Urban Meyer. Ohio State is looking at two Virginia recruits in 2019, running back Devyn Ford and defensive end Brandon Smith, so don’t expect that pipeline to end any time soon.

When it comes to prospective linebacker targets, Pope’s commitment doesn’t really have an impact. Ohio State is really only looking at two other linebackers in this class, Palaie Gaoteote and Solomon Tuliaupupu, neither of whom would be turned away if they want into the class.

As of right now, if pressed to make a prediction, I’d say both will likely end up at USC, but no one should have any worries about Ohio State not taking either of them because of Pope. They’re good enough to merit finding the space in a quickly filling class.

Pope’s commitment extends Ohio State’s lead in the 247sports team rankings, from roughly 12 points to nearly 20. Ohio State is still well on pace to land the best recruiting class of all time, upending a record set by Urban Meyer at Florida in 2010.

BOOOOOOM!! The Buckeyes add another standout 2018 linebacker to the fold.

Nearly a week after landing former Ohio State standout Malik Hooker’s younger brother Marcus, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have now picked up a verbal pledge from another class of 2018 standout.

Joining fellow linebacker prospects Dallas Gant and Teradja Mitchell in the Buckeyes' class, four-star recruit K’Vaughan Pope is now the 17th member of Ohio State’s top rated recruiting class.

Announcing his commitment on Friday night, Pope picked Ohio State over a long list of scholarship offers. Before deciding on the Buckeyes, the 6'2, 210-pound Dinwiddie, VA native held chances to suit up at programs such as Georgia, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, and Florida State.

Currently rated as the seventh inside linebacker and 168th-overall prospect in the class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Mitchell put together an impressive junior campaign at Dinwiddie High School. Last season as a leader for the Generals, who finished the year off 14-1, the future Buckeye accounted for 135 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 6 interceptions.

Be on the lookout as the Land-Grant Holy Land recruiting team will have much more on K’Vaughan Pope and his commitment to Ohio State coming soon.

The former Ohio State star shined in TBT, securing honors along the way.

Congrats to the #TBT2017 All-Tournament Team!@bigplaydj1, @KFogg21, Colin Curtin, Sean Marshall, @CWARE22,@edeven23, @Jared_Sully0 pic.twitter.com/MQFgYfWI8u

— TBT (@thetournament) August 4, 2017

Even though Team Scarlet & Gray, a team consisting of former Ohio State basketball stars, fell in The Basketball Tournament semifinals, some good came from the tournament run. First, we got to witness the likes of Aaron Craft, David Lighty and Jared Sullinger team up together. Second, we witnessed the resurgence of Sullinger—who made the All-Tournament Team.

Sullinger balled out on the Scarlet & Gray’s run, including breakout games in Round 2 against Team Always a Brave and the semifinal loss to Team Challenge ALS. In Round 2, Sullinger put up 21 points while grabbing 9 boards; in the semifinal, Sullinger pulled off a double-double by scoring 26 points and getting 10 rebounds. Both contests featured Sullinger draining three points shots—two in Round 2, and one in the semifinal.

The other members of the All-Tournament team were all part of squads that reached the semifinal stage. Boeheim’s Army, a squad of former Syracuse basketball stars, had Eric Devendorf on the All-Tournament team; Team Challenge ALS had Casper Ware and Sean Marshall; and Overseas Elite had DJ Kennedy, Kyle Fogg and coach Colin Curtin.

Overseas Elite won the whole shebang on Thursday night, capping off a three-peat in The Basketball Tournament. Additionally, Overseas Elite picked up the $2 million grand prize.

“Asked whether he had a solid top-six now, Smith said, “Not yet. (But) I feel good I’m going to have that six. There are freshmen who could fight for one of those.””

Bill Rabinowitz on the OSU receiving unit | The Columbus Dispatch

Now that The Basketball Tournament is in the books, the focus locks into Ohio State football. Camp is beginning, and that means that all of the rust that’s built up over the offseason is being shaken off.

In an article by Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch, he took notes and got quotes from the first day of full-pad training camp on Thursday. Zach Smith, the receivers coach, talked about the depth chart within Zone 6—giving the quote seen above.

It may seem like Aug. 31 is around the corner (and it is), but every team assembled in the Meyer era has hit the ground running. Terry McLaurin and Parris Campbell are said to be the leaders of the WR group, and that helps propel the other members of the unit on and off the field, according to Smith.

Leadership is going to be key, as the tempo and expectations start at the top. Rabinowitz noted that McLaurin said, “Every ball that’s in the air, we want it.” That kind of intensity and desire to create production goes a long way, especially with camp just beginning.

“Victor said he felt more comfortable during bowl practice, and he had a 21-yard catch in the Fiesta Bowl. But the play that flashed what he could be came in the blowout win over Maryland.”

Doug Lesmerises on Binjimen Victor | cleveland.com

With the road conference-opener against Indiana now being the location of ESPN’s “College Gameday,” the Hoosier-Buckeye clash just got a little bit bigger.

The added spotlight brings the need for members of the squad to step up. Wide receiver Binjimen Victor may be one of those guys. In an article by Doug Lesmerises of cleveland.com, Victor describes the experience he’s gained entering his second season with the Scarlet and Gray.

Last season, Victor played in five games, netting four receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown. The Maryland game showcased a 25-yard TD reception from Victor—which highlighted the potential that the then-freshman possessed. In the Playoff Semifinal loss to Clemson, Victor reeled in one reception for 21 yards. With an offseason to get better, Victor is still rising up the WR depth chart.

In the article, Victor says there is still work to be done before the season kicks off on Aug. 31 against the Hoosiers. We’ll see what the sophomore brings to the Buckeye offense with the revamped coaching staff.
