It might be a while before we see the former Ohio State guard back in Columbus.

“I don’t think I’ll ever go back now. It just — it messed me up completely. And I talked to him so many times just prior to that. He’s not upset or anything so I guess they didn’t really treat him bad, but it just hurt me to se a guy like him go.”

Former Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell on The Woj Podcast via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Time may heal all wounds, but right now D’Angelo Russell is not happy with Ohio State’s decision to fire Thad Matta in early June. The offseason has already been tumultuous for Russell, who, after two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, was traded to the Brooklyn Nets last month. The news is not something that new head coach Chris Holtmann can be happy to hear as he has the task of turning around an Ohio State basketball program that has missed the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons.

While it’s hard to imagine that the absence of Russell around the program would have any sort of major impact on what Holtmann is trying to do in Columbus, especially with Russell only spending a year with the Buckeyes, the presence of the talented guard certainly wouldn’t hurt. It’s possible that Holtmann and Russell haven’t had a chance to speak yet, and Russell’s tune might change once he sees what Holtmann is trying to accomplish with the Buckeyes.

Still, it’s not a good look for the program when one of their recent stars comes out and takes such a strong stance in how their coaching change was handled. Holtmann made it clear at his introductory press conference that he was intent on welcoming former players of all generations into the program. Looks like he’s got some work to do on at least one former Buckeye.

“Last year, Ohio State was tasked with replacing 12 players — including five first-rounders — who were selected in the 2016 NFL draft. Though the Buckeyes won’t have to deal with the large quantity of losses this year, they will once again be forced to identify new starters at seven different positions.”

Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

With great success comes great responsibility, and for Ohio State the responsibility is trying to identify seven new starters this year. In April, Ohio State lost three defensive backs, Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, and Gareon Conley, in the first round of the draft. Curtis Samuel, Raekwon McMillan, Pat Elflein, and Noah Brown followed over the next two days. While Urban Meyer and his staff don’t have as big of a job in replacing key players as they did following the 2015 season, they still have to make the right moves to keep Ohio State in the thick of the national title race.

Two of the positions which Ohio State needs to fill are pretty easy to identify the replacements for. McMillan’s linebacker position will likely see Chris Worley move from strongside outside linebacker to middle linebacker, with Dante Booker entering the starting lineup to take over Worley’s position. At center, it is already known that Billy Price will move to center to give Ohio State the veteran leadership that Elflein gave the offensive line last year.

The other five positions that Ohio State must fill aren’t quite as clear, with a number of players in the mix to become the starters. With three spots open in the defensive backfield, there are five cornerbacks who will try and replace Lattimore and Conley. Denzel Ward is a favorite to grab one of those open slots with the play he exhibited on the field last year. The other position is a toss-up between Damon Arnette, Kendall Sheffield, Shaun Wade, and Jeffrey Okudah. At safety, Erick Smith and Jordan Fuller will compete to try and fill Malik Hooker’s vacated safety spot.

The picture at a couple positions on the offensive side of the football is just as cloudy. Samuel was Ohio State’s best offensive threat last year, and now Demario McCall, Parris Campbell, and K.J. Hill are all likely to see some time at the position, with Campbell and McCall probably seeing the lion’s share of the opportunities. Hill is also in the mix to replace Noah Brown at wide receiver, along with a laundry list of candidates who are itching to try and bolster Ohio State’s passing attack.

“You don’t want to rush, but you want to go fast. It’s learning how to play within yourself at a reasonable tempo.”

Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

A return to faster tempo sounds like it is in the works for Ohio State’s offense under Kevin Wilson. Tom Herman was able to find success as an offensive coordinator with the up-tempo offense that he employed in his short tenure in Columbus. In the two years since Herman’s departure to take the head coaching position at Houston, Ohio State hasn’t consistently utilized the type of tempo that was successful under the former OC. Last year the problems with the offense ran deeper than just their pace when on the field, and even with those issues, Ohio State found themselves in the College Football Playoff.

Now Buckeye fans are salivating at what new offensive coordinator Wilson will bring to the table in terms of tempo. Ohio State won’t rival what Chip Kelly did in terms of tempo during his time at Oregon, but what Buckeye fans will see is an improvement from what they saw last year.

Wilson plans to employ an up-tempo offense that will get opposing defenses on their heels, and test their endurance. It will be interesting to see if Wilson’s style of play will be the difference and allow Ohio State to achieve the same type of success they found with Herman running the show.

LGHL What does Marcus Hooker bring to Ohio State

Ohio State has a new legacy family.

A little over four years ago, Ohio State extended an offer to an under the radar, three-star defensive back named Malik Hooker on the recommendation of then defensive coordinator Luke Fickell. He was extremely raw, but an athletic freak, with enormous upside. Thanks to some excellent coaching by Fickell, Greg Schiano, and Kerry Coombs, Malik was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2016 draft, despite spending just one year as a starter in Columbus.

Ohio State is hoping they can strike gold again, as just moments ago, Malik’s younger brother, Marcus, committed to Ohio State, less than 24 hours after being offered. Marcus, much like his brother, is a very athletic, but very raw, defensive back, that received an offer from Ohio State due to a defensive coordinator's infatuation with his athleticism and ceiling.

For much of the 2018 recruiting cycle, Marcus seemed headed to Pittsburgh, or West Virginia, as he had interest from his brother’s former school, but no offer. Marcus was given a list of goals Ohio State wanted him to achieve to receive an offer, and after a number of excellent camp performances, Marcus did just that. He looked fantastic at Friday Night Lights last week, and less than seven days later, he’s now officially a member of Ohio State’s 2018 class.

Marcus shares some similarities with his brother, but overall, he’s a fairly different player. Here’s what he brings to Ohio State, both on the field and in their 2018 class.

ON THE FIELD

Marcus is built a bit differently than his brother is. He’s two or three inches shorter, and not as freakish of an athlete as Malik is, although not many people are. Despite a bit of an athletic gap, Marcus is still an extremely long, athletic defensive back that catches the ball very well, just like most Greg Schiano defensive backs. He’s listed as a cornerback right now, but will shift to safety at the next level, as his skill-set dictates.

He may not be the Olympic level athlete that his brother is, but at least according to his high school coach, Marcus may be a better player than Malik was, at least coming out of high school. His game is a bit more refined than Malik’s was, in terms of his coverage skills, tackling ability, and overall technique. He doesn’t have the center fielder-like speed of his brother, but he more than makes up for it with great anticipation skills, and long strides that allow him to cover a large amount of space.

However, that doesn’t mean that he won’t have a lot to learn once he arrives in Columbus. Most of Marcus’ high school success has come on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver, due to his athleticism. The foundation is there, but as I said, he’ll need to spend a year or two developing his game, especially when it comes to tackling and the nuances of the safety position in Ohio State’s defense.

Ohio State wouldn’t have offered him if they didn’t think that he had the ability to play at the Big Ten level, and both Greg Schiano and Kerry Coombs are confident that they can mold Marcus into the second Hooker brother to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

IN THE CLASS

Marcus is the 16th commitment in Ohio State’s 2018 class, and the third safety, along with Jaiden Woodbey and Josh Proctor. Where Woodbey and Proctor are more refined, Marcus serves as a bit of a project. He won’t compete for a starting job right away, and doesn’t have as much experience or technical skill, though he makes up for it with his range, hands, and potential.

Before you ask, no, his commitment doesn’t impact anyone else’s in the class, or that Ohio State is currently looking at. It’s been extremely common for Urban Meyer to take at least one project player in every class, and Marcus may be that player in this class. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t, but I can tell you right now that no one is losing a spot over this commitment.

Marcus is Ohio State’s first commitment from Pennsylvania, after three straight classes of bringing in no recruits from Ohio’s neighbor to the east. He may not be the last recruit to head to Columbus from Pennsylvania in this class either, as the Buckeyes remain in hot pursuit of one of the nation’s best players, defensive end Micah Parsons. Landing Marcus doesn’t really help Ohio State in recruiting Parsons, but it certainly doesn’t hurt either.

If you’re the kind of person that cares about recruit rankings and composite scores, don’t fret when you see Marcus sitting in the mid 500s, because after an excellent summer and what could be a big senior campaign, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he got a big push, perhaps even past the 352 ranking his brother was given in 2014.

Fun note: Marcus, Ohio State’s lowest ranked commit, would easily be the best player in Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa’s 2018 classes. If you’re wondering why Ohio State has been dominating the Big 10 recently, look no further than that stat.

Podcasting with Crimson and Cream Machine about the 2017 Sooners

Consistently recruiting at a high level means that you’ll eventually have to replace your players when they become great and decide to leave. At blueblood schools like Ohio State and Oklahoma, replacing high-level talent is a frequent process, and sometimes can happen all at once.

Last season, Ohio State had to replace their leading passer, rusher, top three receivers, and arguably their top seven defenders all at the same damn time. In all, the Buckeyes were tasked with replacing 12 total NFL Draft picks, five of whom were selected in the first round. They still went 11-2 and made the College Football Playoff (Note: Urban Meyer is very good). While on a smaller scale, the Oklahoma offense is looking at a similar situation in 2017.

Here’s a glimpse at what OU must replace offensively from last year’s 11-2, Sugar Bowl-winning squad:

  • 384 carries, 2,334 yards rushing, and 22 rushing touchdowns between running backs Joe Mixon and Samaje Perine
  • 104 targets, 80 catches, 1,524 yards receiving, and 17 touchdowns from Heisman-finalist receiver Dede Westbrook
  • An additional 79 catches, 1,032 yards, and eight touchdowns from receiver Geno Lewis, Mixon, and Perine.

That’s a lot of production now cashing NFL paychecks. Oh, and if that weren’t enough, Bob Stoops decided to retire after 18 seasons as head coach, leaving the keys to the program to Offensive Coordinator Lincoln Riley. With all that said, expectations have to be a little lower this season, right? Not really. Welcome to being a big-time college football head coach, Lincoln!

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Jack Shields of Crimson and Cream Machine joins the show to discuss the 2017 Sooners, Bob Stoops’ abrupt departure, Riley’s first season as head coach, and how it’s business as usual in Norman.

Jack helps shed some light on why expectations are still so high, and breaks down everything about the new look Sooners, including:

  • who replaces Perine and Mixon.
  • whether the offense’s passing identity changes with the loss of Westbrook.
  • what makes OU’s line one of the best in the country.
  • why defensive coordinator Mike Stoops is on thin ice.
  • the rivalry with Texas getting a much needed shot in the arm, and more!

The Buckeyes aren't slowing down in their pursuit of a defensive back dynasty.

Back in February, Ohio State picked up a surprising early commitment from 2018 safety Jaiden Woodbey of St. John Bosco (CA). The high four-star prospect initially chose the Buckeyes over offers from Alabama, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Tennessee, UCLA, USC, and more.

Since deciding on the Scarlet and Gray, however, the 6'2, 204-pounder has received offers from the likes of Auburn, Georgia, Missouri, and Oregon. Combine that with the revved up pursuit from both the Trojans and the Sooners and some believed that Woodbey, the nation's third highest-ranked safety, may be wavering on his pledge to Ohio State.

However, Woodbey made a stop in Columbus last Friday for the Buckeyes' annual Friday Night Lights event. The visit was a lengthy one and it ultimately was about as positive of a visit as Ohio State could have hoped for, as Woodbey is seemingly set on his decision to commit to head coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.

This place is special... Recruitment shut down.. 100% Buckeye ⭕#S1VER8ULLETS pic.twitter.com/9I75P8hGtZ

— Jaiden Woodbey (@JaidenWoodbey) July 26, 2017

With his recruitment now in the rear view, Woodbey can put his focus towards his senior campaign with the Braves. The goal at hand for the Ohio State pledge is a simple one: defend their CIF Open Division State Championship that they earned last season by taking down De La Salle (CA). Another thing Woodbey can turn his attention to is helping Ohio State build on an already impressive recruiting class.

Hooker, Rogers get Buckeye offers

Another prospect that was in attendance for last week's Friday Night Lights event in Columbus was 2018 CB Marcus Hooker of New Castle (PA). It's a last name that should be very familiar to the Ohio State faithful. Marcus is the younger brother of former Buckeye and current Indianapolis Colt Malik Hooker, and now he has a chance to follow in Malik's footsteps.

I'm extremely blessed to receive a offer from The Ohio State University!! ⚫#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/i4uaAsZkFm

— Marcus Hooker (@marcushooker23) July 27, 2017

Hooker had a chance to impress in front of the Buckeyes' coaching staff and he did just that. The three-star Keystone State prospect now holds an offer from the Scarlet and Gray to go along with opportunities from the likes of Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, West Virginia, and more. As expected, it didn't take very long for a bevy of 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions in favor of the Buckeyes to arrive. Ohio State is now the favorite and that should surprise no one. I imagine this will pop sooner rather than later.

Just like Hooker, class of '20 OG Justin Rogers of Oak Park (MI) was also in the building on Friday. Coming into the event, Rogers had already acquired offers from 11 programs including Boston College, Kentucky, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and more.

Prior to his arrival at the camp, I noted on Twitter that Rogers was one who would be on offer watch. On Wednesday, that came to fruition as the Great Lake State prospect announced on his Twitter account that Ohio State had upped his offer count to 12.

I am blessed and honored to receive an offer from Ohio state University #Buckeyes ⭕⭕pic.twitter.com/yT5XPcbAg3

— Hollywood #52 (@JustinR61966954) July 26, 2017

From the looks of it, Rogers seems to be a surefire highly-touted prospect in his class. With the Buckeyes jumping into the mix, I would imagine both major in-state schools for Rogers — Michigan and Michigan State — won't take much longer to follow suit, probably as soon as this weekend.

Griffith planning visits before decision

Ohio State has had their fair share of success at IMG Academy (FL) in the past. The program has seen guys like Malik Barrow, Tyler Gerald, Isaiah Pryor, and Marcus Williamson head to the Buckeyes in recent years. Not to be forgotten, defensive tackle Taron Vincent, who currently attends the school, is already in the fold for Ohio State’s top ranked 2018 recruiting class. But could they be bringing another current Ascender to Columbus to join him?

According to SB Nation’s Bud Elliott, ‘18 CB Houston Griffith will be making another stop to the Buckeyes' campus before ultimately making his decision on where he will attend college. Griffith has been at Ohio State several times, with his stop back in June being the most recent.

DB @___HG3 says he'll visit FSU, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State before deciding. @Tomahawknation @LGHLRecruiting @BSDtweet @CornNation

— SB Nation Recruiting (@SBNRecruiting) July 26, 2017

As you can see from Elliott’s tweet above, Griffith will also take trips to Florida State, Nebraska, and Penn State as well. It will be interesting to see what happens here. But what we do know is that the Seminoles are the favorite as of today. FSU has picked up 93% of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for the four-star Sunshine State prospect.

Either way, with the Buckeyes already having ‘18 CB Sevyn Banks on board, the fact that they are in strong position for five-star cornerback Anthony Cook of Lamar (TX), and their latest offer to the aforementioned Marcus Hooker — I don’t see Ohio State as a major player for Griffith at this time.

Quick Hit

  • Ohio State hosted ‘19 OT Logan Brown, ‘20 OL Dallas Fincher and ‘19 DT Mazi Smith for a visit on Wednesday. The trio currently attends East Kentwood High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The national champion QB for the Buckeyes was dealt by Buffalo for a conditional pick.

He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Now, former Ohio State star quarterback Cardale Jones has been traded to the Los Angeles Chargers for a conditional draft pick. He’ll join former teammates Joey Bosa and Joshua Perry on the West Coast just in time for training camp.

— Los Angeles Chargers (@Chargers) July 26, 2017

The trade makes sense, as the Bills had four quarterbacks on the roster and a new head coach running things. Now, Jones will have a real shot at being the backup quarterback behind Philip Rivers.

In his lone season in Buffalo, Jones appeared in one game, throwing for 96 yards on 6-of-11 passing. One of those passes went for 64 yards—which is his longest completion in the NFL.

Jones, who was known for throwing the deep ball at OSU, guided the Buckeyes to a national championship in the 2015 season after filling in for an injured Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett.

Head coach Chris Holtmann keeps building his staff as he inches toward the season.

As the basketball season inches closer, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann has added another assistant to his staff in former ECU assistant Mike Netti, as first reported by Pirate Radio 1250/930. One of the few OSU staff members that is not following the new head coach from Butler, Netti and Holtmann were assistants together years ago at Gardner-Webb.

Netti was with ECU for four seasons and is known for his recruiting, which is one of Holtmann’s sticking points moving forward with Ohio State’s program. During his time at Gardner-Webb, Netti helped develop two-time Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year Tim Jennings and had two recruiting classes ranked No. 1 in the league by HoopScoop.

The new Ohio State assistant has 13 years of Division I assistant experience and was a head coach for two years among the JUCO ranks at Lackawanna (Pa.) College. Netti graduated from Syracuse in 2002, but played Division III basketball at Alvernia College in Reading, Pa., lettering two years.

Would the real ‘OSU’ please stand up?

“Ohio State University... filed an application in February with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, seeking to trademark ‘OSU,’ specifically on clothing and apparel. But another university that holds the acronym near and dear is stepping in.”

- Jennifer Smola, The Columbus Dispatch

In response to a trademark request filed by Ohio State in February, Oklahoma State asked for, and was granted, an extension by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, meaning that the folks from Stillwater have until the end of August to file an objection.

However, according to Smola’s article, it likely will never get that far. As far back as the late 1970s, the two OSUs have had concurrent usage agreements “applying to sports events and recreation programs, entertainment and education.” Ohio State’s new filing would apply to clothing not currently covered in the agreements.

These established agreements divvy up most of the country, meaning that Ohio State owns the use of the letters in 19, mostly midwest and east coast, states, while Oklahoma State owns it in 17 states in the west and south.

The two schools split Iowa practically through the center of the state. In her piece, representatives from both schools told Smola that this legal situation was not a conflict between the institutions, but rather the normal course of administering and updating trademarks. Both schools assume that a resolution will be reached amicably.

All of this begs the question, what about Oregon State? The apparent red-headed step-child of the larger OSU family doesn’t appear to be a factor in any of these negotiations.

However, considering that Ohio State’s embracing of the capitalized “The” at the beginning of the school’s name was born from a legal disagreement with Ohio University, perhaps former Buckeye players will state that they played their college ball at “The OSU” during televised, pre-game introductions in the near future.

“The question has to be asked, how does Urban Meyer and his staff keep all of these quarterbacks happy? The easy answer is, they don't and at least one of the signal callers will transfer.”

- Patrick Murphy, BuckNuts

In theory, it’s a good problem to have when the number of talented individuals capable of playing a position far exceeds the number able to play it. However, when you are dealing with incredibly talented young men, at the most hyped and pampered position in sports, its inevitable that someone’s playing-time expectations will not be met.

Clearly, senior J.T. Barrett is the unquestioned starter for the Buckeyes this season, so, barring an injury, one of the hottest positional battles of the upcoming fall camp will be to determine who backs him up. As Murphy says, while there is no guarantee that this year’s backup is next year’s starter, it certainly will give someone a leg up.

With Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins, and Tate Martell currently in the quarterback room, and four-star commit Emory Jones expected to join the group next season, there just aren’t enough balls to go around.

At Big Ten Media Days earlier this week, head coach Urban Meyer said that his staff understands the problem and actively prepares to lose players to transfers, especially at the QB position. Murphy does a good job of outlining the situation in his article, but my concern about this situation goes beyond the roster machinations.

Many players come into their college careers at a big-time football factory with dreams of moving to the next level, and how they respond to the adversity of realizing that, perhaps for the first time in their athletic lives, things aren’t exactly going according to plan can be a big deal. Meyer and company seem to have built a program with open lines of communication and a focus on post-football life. They also have made a public, concerted effort to recruit “quality” guys. I hope that will be enough to prevent any potential ill-will from leaking onto the field in the seasons to come.

“Those ingredients brew cynicism for anyone wedded to tradition, but the Indiana Hoosiers have no problem with the idea of beginning their season with a prime-time ESPN game Aug. 31 against OSU.”

- Todd Jones, The columbus Dispatch

As Jones points out in his article, the fact that Ohio State is opening its 2017 football season on a Thursday night in August against a conference opponent is the stuff that likely makes those fans most reverential to the history and tradition of college football a tad uneasy.

For their part, Indiana has embraced the situation for a number of reasons. In addition to the fact that it will be the school’s first game against former head coach Kevin Wilson (Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator), it is also the chance to have a strong showing in a nationally televised game, that will garner the attention of the entire sporting world.

However, there is far more about the logistics of this game to champion than the primetime ESPN audience, or the Hoosiers’ quest for revenge. Over the past year or so, we have been inundated with articles about all of the things that millennials are killing, from department stores to the wine industry to hotels and vacations.

Let me propose an alternate theory, perhaps millennials aren’t "killing" these things, instead, the industries in death spirals are simply refusing to evolve in order to appeal to new generations.

Gone are the days of fans only being able to see a handful of college football games on Saturday. With cable and streaming options, in theory, any fan can watch nearly any game that they want.

So it behooves networks, conferences, and athletic departments to attempt to find new ways to attract and accommodate viewers. If that means opening up the season a few days before Labor Day with a conference opponent, so be it. While there are certainly limits that will likely eventually be pushed, finding ways to subvert the venerable, but no-longer-logical, traditions of college football, can only help the sport grow.
