Former Ohio State star Michael Thomas is looking to break even more records in Year 2

Setting three rookie records for the New Orleans Saints just wasn’t enough for the Buckeye.

“I mean, honestly, I was going for all the rookie records. I was going for all the NFL records. I kind of hit a speed bump.”

-Michael Thomas, via Mike Triplett, ESPN

The Ohio State product has continued letting his work speak for itself. (#Shhhh) But his rookie season has everyone else talking. He may have set three rookie receiving records for the New Orleans Saints, including receptions (92), receiving yards (1,137) and touchdowns (nine), but Thomas was aiming a bit higher.

He was sidelined for one game during the season, leaving him just shy of several league records for rookie receptions and receiving yards. Thomas is using this as motivation to make the most of his Year 2 campaign, that already has him as the No. 1 receiver for quarterback Drew Brees.

Thomas has always been known for his work habits, and things haven’t changed at the next level. He credits emulating Brees to help him getting accustomed to a routine, but the quarterback is just as appreciative of his younger teammate. With another offseason working together, Thomas will be able to add even more routes to an experienced offense.

“Jones made a couple of nice throws on a deep ball and a deep out that showed off his accuracy and arm strength.”

-Eric D. Williams, ESPN

In a new city, with a new team, quarterback Cardale Jones didn’t have much time between landing in Los Angeles and suiting up for training camp. The turnaround was so quick, that he was a little late taking the field, as he was trying to get one or two plays under his belt in order to practice.

There was a bunch of headlines last week about Jones being so happy to be traded to the Chargers, that he actually cried tears of joy. Hyperbole, or not, the quarterback hasn’t been shy about his admiration for Philip Rivers and his excitement about having the opportunity to learn from him.

Jones and Rivers have a short history together. The Buckeye trained with Rivers’ younger brother, Stephen, heading into the 2016 NFL Draft, and the elder Philip would visit and offer his two-cents every so often. This could be a really good opportunity for Cardale to start off the year as the No. 2 guy, which could eventually lead to the starting role once Rivers hangs up his cleats.

“If the opportunity comes, that’s something to definitely look into.”

-Boom Herron, via John Vargo, Tribune Chronicle

It’s been quite awhile since you’ve heard “BOOOOOOM” echo through a football stadium, and it looks like it might not happen again. The running back hasn’t been able to find a consistent landing spot since his playing time at Ohio State, and has bounced from team-to-team.

He spent the 2016 preseason bouncing from the Buffalo Bills to the Indianapolis Colts -- and back again -- but never landed on a roster for the regular season. Unlike his classmate, DeVier Posey, Herron hasn’t looked at a career in the CFL, and at this point isn’t eyeing a return to the NFL either.

After being waived for the last time, Herron moved back to his hometown and started a logistic business. For now, that’s where is focus lies, but as he said in the article above, “never say never”, about a return to the game he loves so much.

Ohio State has their first 2019 commitment.

A little more than a year after Ohio State landed its first 2018 commitment in the form of- running back Brian Snead at Friday Night Lights, the Buckeyes have continued their seemingly annual trend of kicking the next recruiting class off in early August. Earlier today, Huntington, four-star WV-native offensive tackle Doug Nester committed to Ohio State just over two weeks after visiting Columbus for FNL.

Nester has been expected to pick the Buckeyes, sooner rather than later, for weeks now, and it was his visit, among other things, that finally sold him on shutting down his recruitment and joining Ohio State’s 2019 class. The actual decision was made at FNL, but Nester wisely spent the last two weeks decompressing and making sure that he didn’t commit based on impulse. The feelings remained, and now, Nester is a Buckeye.

It’s really hard to put into words just how important it is for Ohio state’s 2019 class to have a five-star lineman like Nester in the fold this early on. He’s not a kid who likes to play the recruiting game, so his commitment is likely 100% strong, and he’s exciting to start recruiting other top talent; which is great news for Urban Meyer and his staff. Nester doesn’t just bring a leader to the class, he brings much more.

ON THE FIELD

As a sophomore last season, Nester started for, and dominated on, his high school team at tackle and guard, on his way to a state title game appearance, and recognition as a First-Team All-State lineman. One of the most impressive things about Nester’s game is his ability to play both guard and tackle, despite standing at 6’6 and weighing nearly 300 pounds, prototypical tackle measurements. To have the agility and mobility at that size to play both guard and tackle is both impressive and tantalizing for an offensive line coach like Greg Studrawa.

His skill, as of right now, is mainly based on his incredible strength, and ability to block for the run. He has great pad level, knows how to use leverage to his advantage, and knows quite a bit about schemes, which shows up in his game. His team doesn’t do a lot of passing, much like 2017 Ohio State signee Josh Myers, but Nester’s aggression, strength, and intelligence should make it very easy for Ohio State to mold him into a complete player.

IN THE CLASS

Nester, as mentioned, is the first commitment in Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class. The 2018 class is expected to be a smaller one in terms of linemen, with the magic number likely being three, so it’s fair to expect that Ohio State will be looking for a full five o-linemen in 2019, and Nester will be at the forefront of that continued search. Michigan tackle Devontae Dobbs, Cincinnati guard Zeke Correll, Georgia guard Keiondre Jones, and Tampa tackle William Putnam are all on Ohio State’s watch list.

Nester picked Ohio State over 16 other offers, though the main competition for his pledge was Alabama, West Virginia, Florida, and Virginia Tech. That said, Ohio State was never really challenged for their leading position.

Nester is the first commitment to Ohio State from West Virginia under Urban Meyer, and the first West Virginian to head to Columbus to play football since tight end R.J. Coleman in 2002.

The 2019 class is officially off and running for the Buckeyes, as they pick up commitment number one in style.

Ohio State is having a great weekend, now with news out of the 2019 class. Saturday afternoon the ‘19 OT Doug Nester of Spring Valley (WV) made his announcement via Twitter to play for the Buckeyes — something that’s been widely expected for weeks.

— Doug Nester (@Freshie74) August 5, 2017

Nester is a 6-foot-5, 295-pounder that is currently classified as a five-star prospect in his class. Additionally, the Huntington, West Virginia native is penciled in as the 36th best player in next years cycle, as well as the third highest ranked offensive tackle and the very best player in the Mountain State.

Despite the fact that Nester ended things relatively early for someone that doesn’t have to sign until February of 2019, the newest Ohio State pledge still garnered over 15 offers before shutting things down today. With that being said, the primary competition for the Buckeyes in the race for Nester's commitment was Alabama, Florida, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. Those were the five schools that were named in his top group that he released in June but ultimately, it would be Ohio State who separated itself from the pack.

The lead recruiter for the Buckeyes in their pursuit was offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and those efforts clearly paid dividends. Now, Nester will assume the lead role for the 2019 recruiting class.

The addition of Nester, their lone commit at this time, powers the Scarlet and Gray up to 15th overall in the 2019 Team Rankings just above Kentucky and right behind Pac-12 powerhouse USC. It also gives them the second best class in the Big Ten for the time being with the Iowa Hawkeyes and their four commits sitting atop the conference.

To see what Nester will bring to Columbus, check out the newest Ohio State pledge in action below, courtesy of Hudl:

LGHL ‘Hopefully I’m scaring the O-linemen:’ 5-star DT Taron Vincent ready to dominate at Ohio State

‘Hopefully I’m scaring the O-linemen:’ 5-star DT Taron Vincent ready to dominate at Ohio State

The country’s No. 1 defensive tackle is a game-changing talent.

Five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent is as polished a prospect in high school football as you’ll find. The 6-foot-2, 285-pounder is aggressive, moves like a freight train, and has an explosive get-off that’s rivaled by few.

And he’s only getting better.

Vincent is one of the crown jewels of Ohio State’s 2018 class and may be the best nose tackle coach Urban Meyer has ever had. OSU isn’t known for having interior linemen as defensive focal points and that should change with the Baltimore native’s arrival.

It came down to Florida State and OSU, but Vincent’s relationship with defensive line coach Larry Johnson Sr. and Meyer won the day for the Scarlet and Gray. Vincent took some time to talk with us about his decision, the trust he has in the Buckeyes coaching staff, and more.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: With so many other national powerhouses like Alabama and FSU offering you, what stood out about OSU and the football program?

Taron Vincent: The tradition, my trust in the coaches and the relationship I have with them. It just pushed me over the edge compared to all the other schools. I talk with Coach Meyer on a daily basis, we text back and forth just about every day. Coach [Larry] Johnson, I’ve known him since I was in seventh grade when he was recruiting my older brother. My relationship is really strong with him.

LGHL: Walk me through your decision-making process. Was it more about what OSU had to offer?

Vincent: It’s really just trusting somebody that’s going to raise me like a man, I guess. I just had faith in the coaches, that’s what really sold me.

LGHL: Your dad, Troy Vincent, is a former longtime NFL cornerback and is currently a league executive. How big of a role did he play in your final decision? Does it help having a parent that’s been through all of this before?

Vincent: He helped me look at all the schools and figure out FSU and OSU. He helped me just sit down and see the pros and cons about each. He just let me decide from there. He was my guiding hand through the whole process and would give me advice. If I have questions, I know I can go to him to ask them. He’d just tell me to enjoy the whole process because it only happens once, so enjoy it all and take it in.

LGHL: You’re one of the best prospects in the country and have been called a real game-changer. How would you describe your game?

Vincent: I’m a run-stopper. I can rush the passer. Hopefully I’m scaring the offensive linemen that are lining up against me. I’m going to always get to the ball no matter what. I’m not scared to run to the ball. The ball could be all the way down at the end of the field and I’ll run down there and make the tackle.

LGHL: Is there anything you want to improve before you get to OSU?

Vincent: Using my hands more when I rush the passer, add some change-up moves, stuff like that. It’s stuff me and Coach Johnson have spoke on the phone about, just areas where I can improve my game.

LGHL: Some have suggested that you could play outside linebacker in college. You’re obviously a pretty athletic guy, so is it something you’ve considered?

Vincent: If they needed me to play it, I’ll play it. But I haven’t really thought about playing it. I played defensive end once my sophomore year in high school and had to drop into coverage.

LGHL: What’s life look like as you get ready for your senior season and your career at OSU?

Vincent: Practicing every day in the morning, then lift afterwards. I’m taking some summer school classes. I go to position meetings after class to watch film.

LGHL: Are there any football players you model your game after?

Vincent: Ndamukong Suh. I like his motor and his relentless to the ball. I don’t want to say he doesn't care, but he’ll do whatever it takes to make the play.

LGHL: Michael Jordan recently said that Kobe Bryant is better than LeBron James because five rings beat three rings. How do you feel about that? Is Jordan right?

Vincent: I think LeBron is the greatest to ever play. I think he’s better than Michael Jordan, first of all. Bill Russell has more rings than everybody, but nobody says he’s the best. I think LeBron has proved himself, he can play the one through the five. I don’t know what else people want from him.

LGHL: Top 3 albums in any genre?

Vincent: More Life by Drake, Culture by Migos, and Future’s album HNDRXX.
