LGHL Star 2018 DE Micah Parsons set to visit Ohio State

The Buckeyes' top remaining defensive target sets his official visit date.

Today marks officially under two weeks until Ohio State’s long anticipated kickoff against Big Ten foe Indiana. With thirteen days until the season starts, Urban Meyer and his staff have given a whole new meaning to the term development as they’ve shown nothing but talent from incoming freshmen to fifth year seniors on this 2017 roster. With the incoming freshmen losing their “black stripes” at a record pace, this continues to prove not only how good this team is shaping up to be, but also just how high-quality the recruits this staff continues to bring to Columbus year in and year out are.

Bucks trending up again?

When it comes to the defensive side of the ball in the Ohio State 2018 recruiting cycle, the Buckeyes have basically been able to call their shots. Landing an incredible amount of 4- and 5-star prospects, it’s easy to see why the Buckeyes and Urban Meyer have the number one ranked recruiting class in the country. However, with so many studs and tremendous successes this recruiting class, there’s still one puzzle piece Meyer and Larry Johnson would love to add.

Enter Micah Parsons (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg). Parsons is certainly not a new name to Buckeye recruiting followers. Ever since his de-commitment from Penn State, Ohio State has been considered the serious favorite to land yet another monster defensive-end prospect when Parsons makes the final call. The 6'3, 235-pound freak athlete is currently not only ranked as the top prospect in Pennsylvania, but also the top prospect at his position in the entire country for 2018.

— Adam Friedman (@RivalsFriedman) August 17, 2017

Yesterday, in an article with Rivals.com, Micah took the time to answer some questions and give the latest in his very own recruiting sweepstakes. Not only did he mention that he will give Ohio State an official visit during the Penn State home game, but also that Ohio State and Nebraska are the two schools leading the pack in his recruitment. With the good news about Ohio State, this only helps aid the feelings that the Buckeyes will in fact be the eventual landing spot when Parsons does decide to end his recruitment. That too could happen sooner rather than later because in the same Rivals.com article, Micah did mention he plans to enroll early to his college destination. Could good news be coming? We shall see later this fall.

Battin set to visit OSU Basketball

Since the start of the Chris Holtmann saga at the helm of the Ohio State men’s basketball program, recruiting has seemed to peak in importance. With so many top targets considering the Buckeye basketball program as their future college destination, it’s not too hard to see why Holtmann was the right man for the job. An exciting jolt to the program, this season of Ohio State basketball has been long overdue.

October 13 @ Ohio State

— Justin Downer (@CoachJDowner) August 17, 2017

Yesterday, the momentum surrounding the basketball recruiting continued when Riley Battin (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) announced he would make an official visit to Columbus to see what Ohio State has to offer. The 6'9, 220-pound power forward grades out as a 3-star prospect, but the 15th-best power forward in the country. With nearly 20 offers, Battin’s star status may make a serious jump in the coming months before his final decision is made.

With offers from schools such as Clemson, Vanderbilt, Washington State, Colorado, Georgia Tech, and more, it’s clear why so many programs are high on Riley’s abilities. Given the size he possesses, the power forward could also transition to play center if needed. With an official visit set to Ohio State on the calendar for October 13, Holtmann and the Bucks will do their best to lay out the red carpet and show exactly why Ohio State is back in business.

Even though he has already accomplished so much in Columbus, the quarterback has some unfinished business.

“Even with all the success I’ve had, I know there are skeptics out there. Even some of our fans might feel like I’m not the best option at quarterback, but I’m just going to try and focus on the task at hand. That’s getting us better as a team. The harder I work here and the more team success we have, the better chance I have to position myself for the NFL.”

-Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett via Pete Thamel, Yahoo Sports

Just two weeks before Ohio State is scheduled to open their 2017 season against Indiana, Buckeye quarterback J.T. Barrett sat down with Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel to not only talk about Barrett’s career so far at Ohio State, but what his senior season may hold. Barrett tore his ACL in high school, which lead to the quarterback coming to Ohio State overweight. While Barrett received some teasing from head coach Urban Meyer about his weight, he was able to earn his head coach’s trust, something that was key heading into the 2014 season when Barrett was called on to replace an injured Braxton Miller.

Barrett was stellar in replacing Braxton Miller, and put the Buckeyes in position to make the College Football Playoff before he was injured in the regular season finale against Michigan. The Buckeyes went on to win the national title, but Barrett saw himself on the bench to start the 2015 season behind Cardale Jones. Last year the quarterback job was undoubtedly Barrett’s and Ohio State again made the College Football Playoff, but were shutout in the semifinals by Clemson.

With just one season left at Ohio State, Barrett is trying to make the most of his senior campaign. The addition of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day has Barrett and the rest of the offense working with more confidence this year. Barrett is just hoping that he can finish out his Ohio State career strong, and when Buckeye fans remember him, they remember his as not only a winner but also a good guy. The dream for Barrett is to end his Buckeye career with another championship, and with his talent and the rest of the personnel Ohio State’s offense has, it doesn’t seem too far fetched.

“And when we talk, they still help me out and talk to me about what I need to do and what I need to get better on. It’s just all about working hard, working to be a first-round draft pick.”

-Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward on the group chat with former Ohio State cornerbacks via Austin Ward, Land of 10

These days it almost feels like a given that each year Ohio State is going to have a cornerback taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. A few years ago it was Bradley Roby. Two years ago Eli Apple was taken in the first round. Last year both Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore were selected on the first night of the draft. Denzel Ward could be the next Buckeye cornerback to be taken early in the Draft. As Ward tries to improve his draft stock, he has a number of former Buckeye defensive backs in his corner via a group chat the former cornerbacks have with the current corners.

Not only does the group chat help give the current Ohio State cornerbacks a glimpse of what their predecessors are going through in the NFL, but it also gives allows the current Buckeyes to get some feedback and support on how they are playing from those who were in their shoes over the past few years. Only recently was the group chat made known to Ohio State cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs, which just shows how much the current NFL players not only care about their former position coach, but also their alma mater. There aren’t many schools in the country that have as talented a group of former players doing their best to help mentor those hoping to join them in the pro ranks someday.

“Being a corner you’ve got to have something about yourself. I know that if I try to get inside (a receiver’s) head in practice, that’s something that’s going to happen to them in a game. And if I’m doing it in practice, that’s not going to bother them.”

-Ohio State cornerback Damon Arnette via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

With Ohio State having two cornerbacks picked in the first round of April’s NFL Draft, there are a couple of holes the Buckeyes need to fill in the secondary. One cornerback who has made some waves so far with not only his play on the field, but also with what he says, is Damon Arnette. The cornerback has a reasoning for why he talks so much though, and that’s to help his teammates. Arnette feels if he gets the wide receivers used to some of the smack talk they might hear from opponents, the less the talk will bother the receivers during games.

Cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs says that Arnette and fellow cornerback Denzel Ward have a leg up on four other Ohio State cornerbacks with just a few weeks left before the season opener. While there is no question that Arnette has the physical skills to excel on the football field, at times his maturity can hold him back. Coombs has said he has had a number of conversations with Arnette about his maturity, and it sounds like it is starting to click with Arnette, as he is playing with more consistency. Coombs compares Arnette to former Ohio State cornerback Bradley Roby, and if Arnette can play like Roby this year, the Buckeyes could have the makings of another first round cornerback on their hands in the future.

“I feel like I was robbed a little bit.”

Ohio State linebacker Dante Booker via Mitch Stacy, Associated Press

After what happened to him in 2016, it’s easy to understand why Dante Booker feels like he was robbed. After earning one of the starting linebacker spots coming out of preseason camp in 2016, Booker didn’t get to spend much time on the field before injuring his knee in the season opener against Bowling Green. Booker was able to return later in the season but by that time Jerome Baker had a firm hold on Booker’s job, and Ohio State decided it was best for Booker to take a medical redshirt.

With Raekwon McMillan having moved on to the NFL, Booker has already reclaimed a starting spot at linebacker. Chris Worley moved to the inside to take McMillan’s spot, while Booker and Baker will be the starting outside linebackers for the Buckeyes. Both head coach Urban Meyer and linebackers coach Bill Davis have high praise for Booker, with Meyer and Davis highlighting how hard Booker has worked. After what happened in the season opener last year, it’s certain that Booker isn’t going to do everything in his power to make sure the opportunity he has doesn’t slip through his fingers.

MotS&G Preview: Ohio State vs Indiana

Preview: Ohio State vs Indiana
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

When: Thursday, August 31st @ 6:00 PM on ESPN

Where: The Rock, Bloomington, Indiana

With the 2017 College Football season fast approaching, I could not help but preview opening day of the upcoming season. After my brief break due to my move back to the states, I am proud to say that I am back MOTSAG faithful!

To open the 2017 season, Ohio State will collide with a seasoned Indiana team that is capable of putting up huge numbers on opposing defenses, but that was under former Head Coach Kevin Wilson, who coincidentally was dismissed by Indiana and is now the Offensive Coordinator at Ohio State.
In an unusual turn of events and because of some luck, Coach Meyer jumped at the chance to improve their offensive deficiencies by employing Wilson. Wilson has a proven track record of reinventing offenses under his watch with stints at Miami (OH), at Northwestern and at Oklahoma. He will bring a quick tempo attack to Ohio State, and it is what the Buckeyes lacked after Texas Coach Tom Herman left.
The search for improvements did not stop there, as Coach Meyer plucked another young coach from the NFL ranks to bolster their staff in Quarterback Coach Ryan Day. Day, a Chip Kelly disciple, will be tasked to improve the QB play. Day and Wilson will work side by side to resurrect an anemic Buckeye offense that was shut out in last years CFB Playoffs.
J.T. Barrett will lead the team for his last season donning the Scarlet and Gray for a Thursday game at Bloomington, Indiana. With him, he has 4 returning starters along the O-Line, but a new RG that has yet to be announced. Bruising RB Mike Weber returns and TE Marcus Baugh is back as well.
Ohio State will break in many first year starters at WR, with Dixon, Campbell, and McLaurin leading the way. Ohio State also has a mix of older and younger players at the position vying for playing time in Hill, Mack, Victor, Harris, and Grimes, so we will have to see how the offense adapts to their newer, faster system.
The defense returns the majority of the front seven and their backups. The biggest question would be the secondary, which lost 3 first rounders to the NFL Draft. The projected starters at CB will likely be Arnette, Sheffield, and Ward with Okudah as the fourth man up. While Wade, Williamson and Riep will be looking for playing time in during garbage time.
At the Safety spots, Webb is the only returning starter, while the other spot is up for grabs between Erick Smith and Jordan Fuller, who no matter who wins, both will play this season. Both bring different playing styles, but both would do well when called upon.
Indiana has a bit of a QB battle going as Richard Lagow is trying to fight off a Redshirt FR Peyton Ramsey, who did well during the spring game. They will have 5 returning starters on offense and a BIG leading 9 on defense led by Tegray Scales. Scales will attempt to stymie his former Head Coaches new team in the season opener.
Prediction: 44-20 (Ohio State)
The Barrett led offense will shine in the opener, with obvious improvements across the board. It will be a balanced attack with 200+ yards passing and at least 100 on the ground. The WR’s will be the biggest improvement and the TE will be featured more frequently than the previous seasons. O-Line will improve as well with Prince and the new RG being the key players, but also the key matchup.
The defense will be stout, but the secondary with the new starters will give up a few huge chunk plays before the lock in. The Rushmen package will be lethal the LB’s will give Indiana fits. I look for them to have a least 2 sacks and a forced fumble, while the secondary snags 2 interceptions. Scales will lead the defensive charge and he will be a problem. He will be near the ball the entire game.

A few more injuries this week are keeping some Buckeye rookies sidelined a little while longer.

We are now heading into Week 2 of the NFL preseason, and, as such, just two glorious weeks away from the Ohio State season opener, followed quickly by the NFL regular season start. After another round of practices, several Buckeyes found their way back to the sideline or locker room with lingering injuries.

Last week’s NFL debut for rookie LB Raekwon McMillan was cut super short when he went down with a torn ACL, and several other rookies have yet to take their inaugural snap as a player in the league. While preseason isn’t taken too seriously, they are still critical opportunities for players on the bubble to solidify a roster spot, or at least garner some interest from other teams.

Here’s a breakdown of when to catch all of the Buckeyes in the NFL for this weekend’s Week 2 preseason slate of games.

Things to watch for Thursday

There are a slew of injuries to former Ohio State stars that otherwise would be suiting up on Thursday night, including Raekwon McMillan (torn ACL), Adolphus Washington (back spasms), and Michael Bennett (calf). Both Cameron Johnston and Doran Grant are still hoping to make the roster for their respective teams, and need to build off their impressive Week 1 preseason performances to get there.

Things to watch for Friday

Rookie offensive lineman Pat Elflein has been getting reps at several different positions, but is still working to secure the job of starting center for the Vikings. Reid Fragel was kicked out of training camp for fighting as head coach Mike Zimmer’s patience for ruckus is dwindling, and will need to keep performing well on the field to make up for any issues off of it.

Things to watch for Saturday

Rookie receiver Curtis Samuel might make his NFL preseason debut this week. Following a lingering hamstring issue that persisted throughout training camp, Samuel saw an increased workload in practice this week, signaling that even if he doesn’t see action this week, he’ll be back soon.

Other injury news includes Braxton Miller likely missing the Week 2 contest with a mild ankle sprain, and Malik Hooker back on the sideline after leaving practice Tuesday with a shoulder injury. Gareon Conley is expected to be in the starting rotation for the Raiders once the regular season hits, but for now, he’s still sitting out of practice with a banged up shin.

Things to watch for Sunday

Ryan Shazier didn’t suit of for the Steelers’ first preseason game, and the team could keep him out until the regular season just to ensure his health come go-time. College and pro teammate Cameron Heyward was the exact opposite. After spending the second half of the 2016 season on IR, Heyward was looking for as many snaps as he could get last week.

The late-game on Sunday offers the most Buckeye-viewing for your pleasure. With seven former Ohio State stars suiting up, there will be no shortage of big plays and big stops made by notable alumni. Cardale Jones is still in the mix to be the Chargers’No. 2 QB, but really needs to have a couple consistent performances heading into the regular season to snatch that spot.

Things to watch for Monday

Mike Nugent might have finally been signed by the Giants, but that doesn’t guarantee him a spot on the final 53-man roster. He’s in a tough kicking competition that’ll likely take him all the way to the roster deadline, but whether he’s shaken off the issues that plagued him Cincinnati is still a concern.

LGHL 4-star Ohio State SG commit Torrence Watson recognized for big summer

4-star Ohio State SG commit Torrence Watson recognized for big summer
Bret Favachio
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

6_5445189.0.jpg

The future Buckeye hoops star has been showing out lately.

Watson’s summer showing pays off

Back in July, new Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann received his first commitment for next year’s cycle when the Buckeyes got word that ‘18 SG Torrence Watson of Whitfield School (MO) announced his pledge to the program.

Watson, who is currently graded as a high three-star prospect, is a 6'5, 175-pounder who offers multiple ways to put the ball in the hoop. The Saint Louis native is the fourth-highest-graded player in the Show Me State. Furthermore, Watson also is slotted as the 121st-overall player in his class and a top 25 shooting guard.

About two weeks after his commitment to the Scarlet and Gray, Land-Grant Holy Land’s Kyle McKinnon caught up with Watson. “I can score the ball, whether that means getting to the basket, pulling up for a jump shot, or shooting from long range. I bring versatility and am able to score on all three levels,” Watson said. One publication saw that on display at the Adidas Summer Championships event.

After a big July on the hardwood, EndlessMotor.net boosted Watson nearly 40 spots in their own Top 200 rankings and now the Buckeye commit falls just outside of their Top 80. Here’s their blurb on Watson’s elevation in their rankings:

After an underwhelming Spring on the circuit, the Buckeye commit got back on track in July. Currently ranked #82, the wing rose 39 spots after averaging 18.3 ppg on 38.7% from 3 (6 attempts per game) at the Adidas Summer Championships. The Ramey Jets United wing has the strength to attack the rim in a straight line and convert. In transition, Watson gets out and fills the wing for high percentage shots. His ability on the perimeter and at the rim makes him a potent scorer.

That is certainly good news for both Watson and the Ohio State staff, who will surely be ecstatic with any improvements made by the Missouri standout. We will see if Watson’s optimistic summer can carry into his senior season as a Warrior.

Snead listed amongst the best in Tampa

Watson wasn’t the only future Buckeye to get recognized for what they bring to their respective sport. 2018 RB Brian Snead of Armwood (FL), a four-star prospect who actually committed to Ohio State a little over a year ago, received praise for a local media outlet.

Spectrum Sports Florida began revealing a Top 20 list that featured Tampa Bay prospects. Snead, a 5'11, 200-pounder, found himself at the No. 2 spot on the list.

Our #2 ranked player in Tampa Bay hails from the @Armwood_Hawks, RB @snead655! #SpectrumSportsTop20 pic.twitter.com/jSRACMxuYW
