There’s gonna be a lot of eyes on this game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes may have missed out on a College Football Playoff berth, but they get a pretty good postseason matchup with the USC Trojans. Back in the day, bragging rights—as well as the occasional national title—were on the line when these two storied programs met in the Rose Bowl.

While the playoff system didn’t give the ‘Grandaddy of Them All’ the Pac-12/Big Ten matchup this season, the Cotton Bowl has been called in to suffice. On Dec. 29, these teams will meet at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to determine who this year's Cotton Bowl champion will be.

In the rankings, it’s a matchup of the No. 5 Buckeyes and No. 8 Trojans. It’s one of the better New Year’s Six bowl matchups, and is one that pits two schools with big recruiting profiles against one another. With that being said, a few high-profile recruits tweeted out their reaction to this bowl announcement.

You better believe I will be in attendance for the Ohio State vs. USC game

⚡️THOR ⚡️ (@JaidenWoodbey) December 3, 2017

Four-star safety Jaiden Woodbey (Fontana, CA/St. John Bosco) is an Ohio State commit that currently resides in enemy territory. Even though he’s in Cali, his tweet points to him making the trek to Arlington for the game.

After putting up sensational numbers at St. John Bosco, over 29 schools have come with offers for Woodbey to attend their respective school. At one point, the 247sports crystal ball had three schools—OSU, Oklahoma, and USC—as the likely landing spots for the safety. On Feb. 7, Woodbey made his commitment to the Buckeyes.

He’s the fourth-best player in the state of California for the 2018 class, according to the 247sports composite, and is considered the No. 2 safety and No. 29 player in the entire class.

Stacking up with the rest of Ohio State’s 2018 class, Woodbey has the sixth-highest overall grade, coming in with a .9826. (Note: we’re using 247sports’ grade.)

I will most definitely have my eyes on this game https://t.co/LvepR6Trne

— T H E J I A N T (@Jackthejiant) December 3, 2017

The No. 1 offensive lineman for the 2018 class also made a tweet about the OSU-USC announcement. Jackson Carman (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) has over 40 offers, but it’s being predicted that he’ll end up at Ohio State when all is said and done.

On top of being the best lineman, Carman is the best player in Ohio, and is graded as the seventh-best overall player in the class.

But, recruiting is a wild and twisty road—and anything is possible.

Of the offers he has, Clemson and USC have shown interest. Could this game play a role in his final decision? Only he knows that.

If Buckeye fans felt nervous about him not committing to the Scarlet and Gray just yet, there might be a good sign from one of his retweets from Woodbey.

Go to the game with me bro https://t.co/7DsyPug4Si

⚡️THOR ⚡️ (@JaidenWoodbey) December 3, 2017

A Buckeye commit possibly attending a game with an Ohio product could bode well for Urban Meyer and his Bucks.

Also, Braxton Miller and Adolphus Washington had career-high games.

As the end of the 2017 NFL season draws near, injuries have sidelined a good portion of the former Ohio State players in the league, while others continue to best their former career-highs. One Buckeye was a surprise inactive due to “violating team rules” while another stepped up in place of a suspended teammate.

Several Buckeyes participated in the “My Cause My Cleats” campaign, and sported some pretty great footwear to draw attention to various causes, issues, and charities.

Your weekly reminder; Fan voting is open through Dec. 14th for the 2018 Pro Bowl, and there are 20 Buckeyes you can vote for on the ballot.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 13:

Roby back in the spotlight

Despite not being a starter, Bradley Roby has seen plenty of minutes for the Denver Broncos over the past few seasons. The Broncos had (formerly) touted the best secondary group in the league, and Roby steadily contributed to that with the occasional pick and pass break-up.

This has been a tough year for Denver, and last week proved to make things worse with Aqib Talib being ejected and subsequently suspended for a full-on fight with Raiders WR Michael Crabtree. With Talib being out, Roby saw more minutes on Sunday and had a great day with four total tackles, a forced fumble and recovery, along with three big pass breakups.

Looks like @BradRoby_1 still knows how to change a game. Jay Cutler passes to Kenny Stills who goes for extra yards. Roby meets Stills with a fist to the ball and ensures a turnover when he recovers the ball himself.

Buckeyes flock to Injured Reserve

It seems like every week there’s another former Ohio State player being sidelined for a long stretch. Before the season even started, second-year Taylor Decker was given the IR designation while he underwent surgery. About 10 weeks later, Decker was activated off PUP and was able to make it back on the field for the second-half of the season.

Not everyone is so lucky though. This week alone, two more Buckeyes joined their breatheren on the sideline, as LB Curtis Grant (Giants) and ST Nate Ebner (Patriots) saw their seasons come to an end thanks to injuries sustained last weekend. The list of Buckeyes on IR now stands at 10, which is about 25% of the former Ohio State players suiting up in the NFL.

More career-high performances from Buckeyes

This week’s Sunday Night Football matchup featured the Philadelphia Eagles (Malcolm Jenkins) and Seattle Seahawks (Nick Vannett). From the start, second-year tight end Nick Vannett was part of the gameplan with two grabs for 19 total yards in the first half, and finished the day with a big 21-yard catch (tying his career-long) in the fourth quarter. Just a week after his first career touchdown, Vannett finished Week 13 with a career-high 40 receiving yards.

After being named the starter for the Bills, DE Adolphus Washington had a career day against the Patriots (of all teams). The Buckeye not only claimed his first sack of the 2017 season, but it was on the oft-coveted, Michigan alum, target, Tom Brady. Despite the final score (23-3), Washington had a career-high game with six total tackles.

Second-year receiver for the Texans, Braxton Miller, also had a career game on Sunday. Against the Titans, the Buckeye put up a career-high 71 yards receiving, including a career-long 57-yard reception (missing the endzone by a yard).

It's good to see Braxton Miller finding some success after dealing with injuries pic.twitter.com/cpYnkTfKgQ

— Ian Wharton (@NFLFilmStudy) December 3, 2017

On his way to finally making an impact, after an up-and-down career thus far — and littered with injuries — Miller was once again bitten by the injury bug and missed most of the second-half with a concussion.

Plays of the Week

Michael Thomas

Despite having a hell of a second season in the NFL, wideout Michael Thomas scored just his second touchdown of the year on Sunday. He continues to prove why “you can’t guard Mike” and displayed an incredible awareness of his feet in order to secure the score. He finished the day with 70 yards and one touchdown.

Joey Bosa

One of the best DE’s in the NFL, Joey Bosa got back to sacking quarterbacks a week after breaking his streak of doing so. On Sunday against the Browns, the Buckeye recorded a career-high seven solo tackles. He also had a huge hit for a strip sack against QB Deshon Kizer.

Other Notables

  • This week’s Monday Night Football matchup is an AFC North showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers (Cameron Heyward, Ryan Shazier) and the Cincinnati Bengals. Shazier is questionable heading into the matchup, having missed Thursday’s practice with an ankle injury.
  • After getting a second chance to extend his NFL career, kicker Mike Nugent was released by the Dallas Cowboys as their franchise kicker (Dan Bailey) is back from an injury. This might have been the veteran’s curtain call on a 12-year career.
  • Speaking of the Cowboys, running back Rod Smith is getting plenty of carries now that Ezekiel Elliott is suspended. A week after recording his first NFL touchdown, Smith made his way back into the endzone for the second score of his career — this time on Thursday Night Football — finishing the day with 10 carries and 27 yards. His brother (and teammate) Jaylon Smith was super hyped for Rod’s success.

Injury Report and Inactives

  • Giants CB Eli Apple is once again inactive this week, this time due to a hip injury — he’s coming off two weeks missed to tend to his Mom, Annie Apple, after brain surgery.
  • Rookie sensation Marshon Lattimore was inactive on Sunday for the Saints, with the team taking things slowly and not rushing his return from an ankle injury.

Source: The #Saints won’t play CB Marshon Lattimore. His ankle isn’t right yet. The team is being smart about it. He’s inactive.

— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) December 3, 2017
  • Starting linebacker for the Jets, Darron Lee, was a surprise addition to this week’s inactive list. No reason was given ahead of the game, only that it was a coaching decision, but Lee told reporters his benching was due to “violating team rule”.
  • As has become the norm, QB Cardale Jones was a healthy scratch in Week 13, as he holds firm to the No. 3 quarterback spot for the Chargers.

Everything you need to know about the Buckeyes’ rematch against the Trojans in the New Years Six bowl game.

After winning the 2017 Big Ten Championship over the Wisconsin Badgers in early-December, the Ohio State Buckeyes were omitted from the College Football Playoffs, but they landed a spot in the Cotton Bowl, and will go against the USC Trojans on Dec. 29 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The Buckeyes and Trojans have a long history — especially during bowl season —, with the overall series favoring USC 13-9-1. The last time the Buckeyes bested the Trojans was in 1974 under legendary head coach Woody Hayes — who coached five of the nine wins against the West Coast team.

Most recently, these teams met back in 2008 and 2009 with both games ending in Buckeye losses. Let’s hope the Urban Meyer era can usher in a new win streak against the Trojans.

Get all of the info that you need to go bowling with the Buckeyes.

Though disappointed that they will not be able to compete for a National Championship, the Ohio State Buckeyes are nonetheless now focusing on an old-school Big Ten v. Pac 12 matchup against the USC Trojans in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

The game will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Dec. 29, 2017 at 8:30 p.m. ET, and Ohio State is now taking requests for tickets via the university.

Fans are encouraged to submit a request through the athletic department’s official TicketMaster site HERE. Fans are able to request up to 12 individual tickets and four parking passes. However, the site does note that some people might be turned away from purchasing tickets due to previous poor behavior.

The ticketing page says, “you may lose your ticket privileges if you have engaged in conduct that is determined, by either OSU or the NCAA, to be in violation of any NCAA rule or if, in OSU's reasonable discretion, you have otherwise taken any action that jeopardizes the eligibility of OSU's programs or its student-athletes.”

So, don’t do any of that, and enjoy JerryWorld!

Former Ohio State players are drawing attention to some important issues and organizations in Week 13 of the NFL.

NFL players have a chance to shine a spotlight on issues and causes important to them in Week 13 with custom cleats as part of the NFL's “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign.

More than 800 players participate in the annual event, and showcase some pretty [fire emoji] footwear. Some former Ohio State players will feature a variety of causes from pediatric and brain cancer research to fallen soldiers.

Joey Bosa’s cleats this week were designed by a young man he met at MD Anderson Cancer Center during his two trips to the Lombardi Trophy ceremony while at Ohio State. Bosa learned during his second visit that only 4% of all cancer research funding goes to pediatric cancer, an alarmingly low figure. The Buckeye is wearing bright gold cleats with “CHILDREN DESERVE #MORETHAN4” on Sunday.

Several Buckeyes took advantage of the League’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign and sported some of the organizations and issues that are important to them:

From angry to relieved, the emotions run the gamut.

For better or for worse, the College Football Playoff committee has announced this year’s semifinalists, and the Ohio State Buckeyes are on the outside looking in, as the Alabama Crimson Tide claimed the fourth spot. The Buckeyes will take on the USC Trojans in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 29.

The decision has elicited a wide range of emotions from Ohio State fans, current and former players, and media members. Some are bemoaning the lack of consistency in the committee’s rhetoric over what actually matters in terms of selection, while others are a little bit thankful to not have to go up against the Clemson Tigers in the semifinals for a second-straight year.

Check out some of the reactions from Twitter and OSU’s afternoon press conference below:

Media members also voiced their concerns with the way that the committee handled the selection:

Curious, by what logic? Eye test? https://t.co/Kno3lmVqgz

— Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) December 3, 2017

I'm no Ohio State fan. BUT THE BUCKEYES JUST GOT ALL-TIME ROBBED OF THE FOURTH SPOT IN THE PLAYOFFS. OHIO STATE IS BETTER THAN ALABAMA, WHICH GOT DOMINATED BY AUBURN AND WHOSE DEFENSE GAVE UP 150+ RUSHING THE LAST THREE GAMES.

— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) December 3, 2017

Ohio State finishes with three wins over teams in the top 16 of the final College Football Playoff rankings (No. 6 Wisconsin, No.
9 Penn State, No. 16 Michigan State).

Alabama's best win came against No. 17 LSU.

— Dan Hope (@Dan_Hope) December 3, 2017

Problem with the eye test: Most of the eyes on the committee are attached to brains that view football the same way. Need more variety of thought in the room if eyes are going to make the final call.

— Doug Lesmerises (@DougLesmerises) December 3, 2017

So, if I have this correct: It’s more important to avoid a bad loss than to notch quality wins or be a conference champ.

— Tom Dienhart (@BTNTomDienhart) December 3, 2017

Except Alabama looked like trash in every game they’ve played this month except against a 5-6 FCS team https://t.co/aOugU1Ajxq

We also asked fans to weigh in on the selection on Twitter, and the emotions varied tremendously, from incredulous to agreeing to relieved:

Ok, now that we know that the Buckeyes are out of the #CFPlayoff, how do you feel about it?
A) Angry
B) Confused
C) Surprised
D) Relieved
E) All of the above

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) December 3, 2017

A, angry that Ohio State let Iowa do what they did. That cost the Buckeyes.

— I-70 Dan (@i70dan) December 3, 2017

Not sure how Bama will ever miss the CFP. They seem like a pre-destined lock for the committee every year now.

— ThirdWaveHoops (@ThirdWave17) December 3, 2017

E) don’t think we had the stuff to win it all. But don’t like rewarding a Bama team with no big wins

— ǝʇᴉH sᴉɹɥƆ (@CHBabyBear) December 3, 2017

D. Relieved we're not going to go in and get embarrassed again: AND
C. Confused as to why Bama is in when they've not been that impressive this year

— Briana Canini Hart (@BriCanini) December 3, 2017

Not surprised at all. Frankly, somewhat in agreement. I just can't get that Iowa game out of my head. 'Bama hasn't really played many really good teams this season, but they have played a lot of Iowas, and they haven't gotten destroyed by any of them.

— Duane Sanderson (@DuaneSanderson) December 3, 2017

Very very angry. No reason Alabama should be ahead of us.

— Nolan Harmon (@nharm1) December 3, 2017

I'm cool fuel the fire for next year

— Wilawn (@lakey480) December 3, 2017

..C & D. We should be in ahead of bama. I believe we would have gotten blown out by Clemson again though.

— Jason Opdyke (@jgox2) December 3, 2017

F. Not surprised- we rolled into Iowa controlling our own destiny. We rolled out not. Up weeks? OSU is the best team in the nation. Down weeks? Blew our chance at the playoffs this year.
I do think this outcome gives a strong argument for expanding to and 8 or 10 team playoff.

— jon Wahl (@jonwahllefebre) December 3, 2017

Come on y’all we know #OhioState struggled all year except in stat games. What we need to focus on now is winning our bowl game. Get some respect and come back next year with Haskins as QB

— David Thoreau (@D_Thoreau) December 3, 2017

Im seriously thinking about not wasting my time watching cfb anymore! Really how can they say Bama is the better looking team wen they didn't beat any1 and didn't get in the conference championship! This is BS and im dun wasting my time n $ on it! F the SEC n espn!

It’s not a CFP semifinal bowl, but the Buckeyes will still play in a New Year’s Six bowl.

Well, Ohio State’s win over Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championship wasn’t enough for the College Football Playoff committee to put the Buckeyes into the top four. Urban Meyer and team finished the season with a No. 5 ranking, sitting on the outside looking in — but, they’ll still play in a New Year’s Six bowl, in the Cotton Bowl against USC on Dec. 29 at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

The Buckeyes needed a dominant performance against the Badgers on Saturday, and despite heading into halftime 21-7, the team had too many mistakes for the committee to have no choice but to add Ohio State to the playoffs. Instead, the committee decided to have two SEC teams in the top four spot, leaving the Big Ten and Pac-12 conferences out of contention.

Instead of preparing for a playoff run, the Buckeyes will now shift focus to preparing for their last game of the season. This will be the last time a lot of these guys suit up for Ohio State, and will be sure to do everything they can to end on a high note.

Buckeye fans are all too familiar with the Trojans, who most recently beat Ohio State in 2008 and 2009 — both years under Jim Tressel. These two teams have yet to meet in the years since, or with Urban Meyer at the helm for the Scarlet and Gray.

It’s actually been 43 years since Ohio State has bested USC, and it was under legendary coach Woody Hayes in 1974 in Pasadena. Hayes is actually responsible for five of the nine overall wins Ohio State claims against the Trojans — although USC leads the overall series 13-9-1.

USC hasn’t been the pinnacle of consistency this year — in fairness though, it’s not like Ohio State has either —, but on a good day, the Trojans feature one of the top QBs in the country in Sam Darnold. Already expected to head to the NFL following the season, Darnold claims 26 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions (something certainly affected by the 21 sacks in 2017).

The Trojans won the Pac-12 Championship on Friday, and are heading into the bowl game 11-2, with losses to Washington State and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish pretty much destroyed USC in October 49-14, handing them their worst loss of the season.
