With 24 hours until national signing day, where does Ohio State stand with its top three targets?

It’s almost time. National Signing Day 2018 is just a mere 24 hours away and the Ohio State Buckeyes led by Urban Meyer are sitting atop the team rankings once again.

The 247Sports Composite Rankings list the Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting haul at No. 1 but the gap between them and No. 2 Georgia is small enough where the top spot is still up for grabs. However, it appears that the Bulldogs will earn a commitment from five-star cornerback Tyson Campbell which would push them beyond Ohio State’s class.

That being said, Ohio State is making some late moves in hopes to hold onto their top ranking. With this is mind, there are three recruits the Buckeyes have apparently focused on to close out 2018. Below, we will break down Ohio State chances in landing a commitment from one of their final remaining prospects.

5-star OT Nicholas Petit-Frere


Ohio State’s best shot at bringing in the top recruiting class for this cycle lies in the hands of one of the top prospects in the entire class. Five-star offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere (Tampa, FL / Berkeley Prep.)

The No. 1 offensive linemen in the 2018 class has been favored to choose hometown school Florida for the majority of his recruitment. However, Urban Meyer and Larry Johnson are making a strong push late in the process.

Petit-Frere is coming off an official visit to Columbus this past weekend, in which he was accompanied by his mother. Little information concerning the visit has been made public, but it is widely believed and expected that it went as well as possible.

Securing a commitment from Petit-Frere would not only be a gigantic boost to Ohio State’s recruiting class ranking, but it would also address an obvious hole at the offensive tackle position. The lack of depth at the position and Ohio State’s pedigree would alone seem to be enough to convince an elite player to commit to the University.

Petit-Frere has kept things close to the vest throughout his entire recruitment. However, it appears the blue-chip prospect has narrowed his decision down to Ohio State, Notre Dame and Florida. He is scheduled to make his announcement at his high school, Berkley Prep, at 10 a.m. ET tomorrow. The ceremony will be broadcast on ESPNU and will likely be one of the most anticipated announcements for the day.

While it appears Florida is still the favorite, albeit by a small amount, the Buckeyes should be confident in their chances. As stated above though, nobody really knows which direction he is leaning at the moment.

If Ohio State is able to land Petit-Frere, it will almost guarantee the Buckeyes the No. 1 class in the country. Again, this could go either way and I believe Ohio State has done the absolute best they could to earn a pledge from the elite offensive linemen, but Florida has to remain the favorite due solely to the fact he hasn’t said anything to lead us believe otherwise.

The pick: Florida

4-star OT Rasheed Walker


Sticking with the offensive line, another prospect Ohio State seems to have focused on late in the recruiting cycle is four-star offensive tackle Rasheed Walker (Waldorf, MD / North Point).

Walker has long been a Penn State favorite but has seen Urban Meyer and Ohio State come on strong in the months leading up to National Signing Day. The path to playing time is much quicker at Ohio State than at Penn State due to a lack of depth at the position. However, Penn State has been building a relationship with Walker for much longer, so the Nittany Lions would appear to be the safer and more comfortable choice.

That being said, unlike Petit-Frere, Walker has already made up his mind. The country’s No. 6 OT, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, released a teaser for his decision over the weekend, in which Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech were listed as his final three schools.


While Walker understands the opportunities that would present themselves if he were to commit to Ohio State, Penn State will likely earn his pledge tomorrow. Like Petit-Frere, Walker will make his announcement at his high school tomorrow around 11 a.m.

The Pick: Penn State

4-star DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste


Four-star defensive end Javonte Jean-Baptiste’s recruitment is one of the most difficult to predict. While many prospects tend to narrow down their decision to a small list of schools this late in the process, things have been the exact opposite for Jean-Baptiste.

Jean-Baptiste has seen his recruitment take off late in the process. In fact, the top contenders for his services didn’t officially offer him until late last year.

His recruitment appears to be down to Ohio State, Nebraska and Texas A&M, with Nebraska being the runaway favorite in the 247Sports Crystal Ball Rankings, holding 91-percent of the predictions.

The blue-chip prospect took an official visit to Texas A&M this past weekend and new head coach Jimbo Fisher has established himself as one of the top recruiters in the country.

While Ohio State and Texas A&M have made valiant efforts late in the process, Nebraska was all-in on Jean-Baptiste since the moment they offered him. Because his relationship with Nebraska seems to be the strongest, the Cornhuskers will likely walk away with the commitment.

The pick: Nebraska

The Illinois native will play his last season elsewhere.

As of just minutes ago, only four members of Ohio State’s 2014 recruiting class, a group that finished third nationally, remain in Columbus. Johnnie Dixon, Terry McLaurin, Parris Campbell, and Demetrius Knox are the final remnants of that stellar group, as defensive tackle Dylan Thompson announced his intentions to play his final season elsewhere.


Thompson, an Illinois native, graduated from Ohio State recently, and will be eligible to play immediately wherever he lands, as a grad transfer.

Thompson was never able to find consistent time on the field at Ohio State, as he battled nagging injuries and off the field issues during his Ohio State career. He suffered an injury as a freshman, and with that rough start, as well as some academic problems, the former three-star only played two games in Columbus, recording three total tackles, all of which came in 2017 against UNLV.

Prior to coming to OSU, Thompson was a three-star product in high school per 247Sports, and was cited as a top-50 DT prospect.

With current Ohio State Buckeyes defensive coordinator Greg Schiano potentially headed to the NFL, newcomer Alex Grinch’s role on the defense could get a lot more robust. While his duties were never officially announced, Grinch was widely expected to be named co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach under Urban Meyer. The Ohio native, who played his own college ball at Mount Union, agreed to come to Columbus despite multiple offers for jobs in the SEC--a big win for Meyer in luring talented coaches to the Big Ten.

In three seasons at Washington State, Grinch improved the Cougars’ total defense to a top-20 ranking nationally--a vast improvement from where Mike Leach’s squad had been previously. Points allowed per game dropped for three straight years from 38.6 in 2014 to 25.8 by last season.

One of Grinch’s signatures on defense is forcing turnovers. While Miami got a lot of attention last season with its turnover chain, Washington State quietly snuck into the top-10 in turnovers forced with 28 (Ohio State was 29th nationally with 24 turnovers).

In addition, as a defensive backs coach by trade, Grinch’s pass defense has always been stout. Last season, the Cougars gave up just 170.9 passing yards per game, and were fifth nationally in passing touchdowns allowed. Washington State was also seventh in the NCAA in passing efficiency defense.

Grinch heavily favored the nickel while with the Cougars, though that preference may have been due to a higher rate of passing in the Pac-12 conference. However, he has been flexible with his schemes overall, shifting from nickel to 4-3 to 3-4 over the course of a game. While his reliance on the nickel may shift as he moves to the Big Ten, there is little doubt that Grinch’s trademark shutdown secondary will remain firmly in place.

One of the hallmarks of this year’s Ohio State basketball squad is its ability to come back when down. While many teams are unable to get out of the holes that they might dig themselves in early on in games, the Buckeyes have been able to steadily play their game and overcome even double-digit deficits, as they showed against Illinois yesterday.

Ohio State was down 15 to the Illini in the first half yesterday--a team that has won just two games in conference play this season. However, led by players like Keita Bates-Diop, the Buckeyes did not panic. While turnovers remained an issue, and the team had to figure out how to play after losing guard Kam Williams due to suspension, Ohio State made adjustments and was able to take the lead at halftime.

Now, Ohio State must take that learning to West Lafayette, Ind., as they face No. 3 Purdue for a shot at the top spot in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers have not lost since November and are undefeated at home. While the odds may be stacked against the Buckeyes, the fact remains that Chris Holtmann’s team has yet to play themselves out of a game in conference play. The loss to Penn State could just as easily gone to overtime, as Bates-Diop tied things up with just seconds left on the clock. In other instances, like Sunday’s outing, Ohio State simply cleaned up their game and played solid defense until they overcame their deficit.

Turnovers remain the Buckeyes’ biggest issue, however, having committed 18 Sunday against Illinois. While Illinois is tops in the Big Ten in forcing turnovers, several of those slip ups led straight to scoring plays. Those are the type of plays that Holtmann wants to limit, even if he can’t get the overall turnover number down.

A former top pick in the NBA Draft, former Ohio State great Greg Oden perhaps is more famous for being selected ahead of Kevin Durant than for his own NBA career, which was cut short due to a string of injuries which ultimately led to his early exit from the association. Now, however, Oden is fashioning a new life and career for himself--but one which is still closely tied to Ohio State basketball.

In one year at Ohio State, the 7-foot Oden averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game on his way to being taken No. 1 overall by the Portland Trail Blazers. He last saw action in the NBA during the 2013-14 season with the Miami Heat.

Coming back to Columbus, Oden credits Ohio State with being able to give him direction, especially after his tumultuous career in the NBA. Oden said that his time on campus as a 30-year-old is different than his experience more than a decade ago. Now, few of the students even recognize him as he spends most of his time either in class or working. Most importantly, he has the opportunity to complete his education, which is something he promised his mother that he would do. He comes to work and class each day with a new mentality, seeking to gain all of the industry knowledge that he can to set himself up for success in the future.

A sports industry major, Oden works as a student assistant coach on Chris Holtmann’s squad. As a 30-year-old coaching a younger generation of players, Oden brings a different perspective to many who, like Oden himself a few short years ago, have aspirations of playing at the next level. But Oden certainly doesn’t take it easy on the younger guys, acknowledging that he still has a “basketball mentality...I try to dominate them as much as I can.”

I have no idea who Cam is but if you are going to try and talk about Ohio State basketball please get familiar with the players' names.
