The Buckeyes have now dropped three of their last four.

The 18th-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse team dropped its second-straight game Saturday as the Buckeyes fell to No. 6 Denver by a score of 12-7 in Colorado.

The Pioneers got off to a hot start on their home turf, winning the opening faceoff and scoring just 10 seconds into regulation. Not to be outdone, Ohio State controlled the ensuing faceoff and set up a two-minute offensive possession which ultimately led to a goal from senior midfielder John Kelly, assisted by sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire. Ohio State struck next to take the lead as freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi, assisted by senior midfielder Austin Seiple, capitalized on a Denver turnover. After trading possessions for most of the remainder of the first quarter, the Pioneers tied things up on an unassisted goal from Colin Rutan, but freshman midfielder Jackson Reid found the back of the net with 1:32 remaining in the quarter to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead heading into the second.

Ohio State extended its lead midway through the second on a shot from junior attackman Gale Thorpe, assisted by junior attackman Jack Jasinski. Denver countered, cutting the lead to one with four minutes remaining. Then, in an explosion of offense, Bugliosi scored his second goal of the game while Denver found the back of the net twice in the final two minutes to send the teams to the break tied five-all.

That offensive spurt from the Pioneers spurned a second-half comeback, as Denver scored seven more unanswered goals on a streak that extended through the fourth quarter, taking a 12-5 lead with under six to play in the game. Goals by senior defenseman Freddy Freibott and sophomore attackman Lukas Buckley stemmed the bleeding, but were not enough to comeback on the second-half surge from Denver.

Bugliosi’s pair of goals led the Buckeyes in scoring, with six players scoring in all in the loss. Senior goalie Matthew Smidt, who split time with sophomore Josh Kirson Saturday, had six saves to Denver’s four. The Buckeyes had just 11 shots on goal on the day, while the Pioneers logged 19. Denver held a 28-23 advantage in ground balls on the day, and won 14-of-23 faceoffs.

Next up, the Buckeyes return home to face No. 4 Notre Dame before kicking off their five-game conference slate.

Eulogizing the most exciting season of Buckeye basketball in years.

Ohio State’s dream season has ended at the hands of Gonzaga, 90-84. As soon as the NCAA bracket was announced last Sunday, this result was penciled in by almost anyone that thought Ohio State would avoid the upset bid from South Dakota State. Ohio State was the underdog against a team with far more depth, tournament experience, and honestly, talent. That’s nothing new for Ohio State, they’ve been dealing with that all season long.

Is the loss disappointing? Of course it is. If it wasn’t for a terrible start, bricked layups, and some (extremely) rough officiating, Ohio State probably pulls the upset, and continues their dream run. Sadly, that bad start can’t be erased, and despite an incredible effort, the Buckeyes just didn’t have enough to knock off Gonzaga. While the loss is disappointing, and while I certainly spent plenty of time yelling at my TV this season as Ohio State played (a sentiment I’m sure many can relate to), this loss shouldn’t take away at all from what this team accomplished.

Ohio State, as I’m sure you know by now, was projected as the 11th best team in the Big Ten coming into the season. Dead in the water in early June— without a coach, a direction, or an entire recruiting class— as the 2015 recruiting class finished their evacuation with the loss of Jaquan Lyle. On June 9th, former Butler head coach Chris Holtmann was hired as the head coach, and given five months to put together a team. After adding Kyle Young, Musa Jallow, and most importantly (somehow) Andrew Dakich, the Buckeyes were ready to “suffer” through what was an obvious rebuilding year.

The team and coaches had other plans. Despite a slow start, with bad losses to Clemson, North Carolina, and Gonzaga, the Buckeyes started to gel, and flashed their potential in an incredible come-from-behind win against Michigan. As the team continued to tear through the Big Ten, in a run that included an extremely satisfying blowout win over then-N0. 1 Michigan State, both the team, and Keita Bates-Diop began picking up serious national attention, and deservedly so.

As usual, with teams that lack depth, the Buckeyes struggled late in the season, dropping games to Penn State (x3) and Michigan, as they licked their wounds heading into the NCAA tournament. Stop and think about that for a second though. Ohio State, led by the best player in the Big Ten, was headed to the NCAA tournament. After hiring their coach in the middle of June. After playing a former Michigan walk-on significant minutes all season. After all the turmoil, and struggle, Ohio State managed to make the tournament as a five-seed. They managed to be good enough to disappoint with a loss to a really damn good team. That’s an absolute miracle.

Like I said, Ohio State fans have plenty of reason to be upset with this loss. It’s the end to an incredible run, and it was a game that Ohio State would probably win four out of five times. But, Ohio State fans have absolutely no reason to hang their heads after this loss. The players on the team have absolutely nothing to ashamed of.

Ohio State fought to the bitter end, just like they did for the entire season. Down ten with a minute left, they fought, and clawed, and scrapped for anything they could get, and showed absolutely no signs of giving in. Musa Jallow launched himself after a loose ball. Jae’sean Tate played with more intensity than anyone else in the country, just like he has for four years. The entire team gave their full effort, and should be extremely proud of what they accomplished.

The final score wasn’t what they wanted. The final game of this dream season came far too soon. But, this team deserves to be remembered for everything that they did for this program, this university, this fan base, and for the entire state of Ohio. You won’t find a team in the country with more heart than the one from Columbus, and for that, they deserve more love and support than they’ll ever receive.

Keita Bates-Diop is one of the most natural scorers I’ve ever seen don a Buckeye uniform. If this was his last game (as it should be), he lived up to the lofty expectations, just as he did all season long. He was a constant scoring threat, and a calming figure on a team that lived off of chaos.

Kam Williams finally got the hero moment that he deserved in the penultimate game of his Ohio State career. After playing second fiddle to Marc Loving, or D’Angelo Russell, or Keita Bates-Diop for his entire career, Kam single-handedly won the game for Ohio State against South Dakota State, and did so in the only way he knows how: with extremely ill-advised reverse layups, fadeaway threes, and a general disregard of all logic and reason.

Tate fouled out on a terrible call, and deserved the chance to finish his final game as a Buckeye on the court with his teammates. It’s a travesty that he had to watch the end from the bench. If there’s been one bright spot for Ohio State the past four years, it’s been Jae’sean Tate. He’s not flashy, he’s not a freak athlete, he’s not going to ever be an NBA star, but he gave everything he had for four seasons, and he’s as important to his team as any other player in the nation.

Last, but certainly not least, Andrew Dakich. Dakich, the podcast expert and transfer from Michigan, has been an inexplicable fan-favorite for the entire season, and while he’s not Aaron Craft, as announcers wanted him to be, Dakich played just as hard as the rosy-cheeked Buckeye legend all season long, scrapping for steals, rebounds, and converting the ugliest layups I’ve ever seen. I’ve never cheered louder at a sporting even than I did when he drained a three against Michigan to lock up the win. Andrew Dakich will go down in Ohio State history as a legitimate contributor, and that rules.

It’s extremely difficult to put a cap on the eulogy of a season that no one saw coming. The end of this season is as painful as any loss Ohio State has experienced in the last decade, in any sport, and to see this run end is heartbreaking. But, I think I speak for all of Buckeye Nation when I say this: thank you, Keita, Jae’sean, Kam, and Andrew. Thank you to the entire team. You made us all proud to be Buckeye basketball fans. The future is extremely bright in Columbus. Enjoy the ride.

The Buckeyes came back from a 2-0 deficit, but fell in overtime to the Irish .

Ohio State hockey last appeared in the Big Ten Tournament championship game back in 2014, losing to Wisconsin in overtime. You can see the picture of the winning goal crossing the goal line in the header image of this article. Today, they returned to the Big Ten tournament title game for the first time and fell in overtime yet again. History is funny that way.

On St. Patrick’s Day, the No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish scored in overtime to defeat No. 5 Ohio State, 3-2. Notre Dame flew out to a 2-0 first period lead before being dominated by Ohio State for much of the final two periods. Overtime would be all Notre Dame, however, as Ohio State seemingly couldn’t make a cross-ice pass while Notre Dame hit a post and was robbed by Sean Romeo at least three times before finally scoring.

The Buckeyes came out as flat as they possibly could, and were utterly dominated by Notre Dame for the first twenty minutes of this one. Shots were 10-7 in favor of the Fighting Irish, but that hardly represents how few good opportunities Ohio State had while Notre Dame was consistently applying offensive pressure.

Bo Brauer scored the first Irish goal at 4:09 of the first. He tipped a Jake Evans shot from a bad angle and it found its way in, past Romeo. Not an ideal start to a game where you came in wanting to prove you deserve a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

Notre Dame would add a second goal, this one on a powerplay as Matt Hellickson connected on a shot from the point. Tommy Parran was sent off for cross checking, giving Notre Dame the advantage it needed to double its lead.

Romeo made high-danger save after high-danger save in that first period with Notre Dame firing at will— even if only ten shots were on net— and probably kept OSU in it, despite the team being run over by the Irish.

I don’t know what happened in the locker room during first intermission, but Ohio State finally got over the dreaded South Bend flu and dominated the Irish in the second. Brendon Kearney tipped a Matt Miller shot from the point through traffic, and suddenly Ohio State had life, and only faced a one-goal deficit.

Brendon Kearney put the Buckeyes on the board with his fifth goal of the season. Assists to M. Miller and Myer. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/9Wm1theaTm

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) March 18, 2018

You’re probably not going to score too many clean goals against the best goalie in the country in Cale Morris, so you take ‘em any way you can get ‘em.

That’d be all the Buckeyes would get in the second, however. They’d put on their first consistent pressure in the game, but were largely kept out of high-danger areas by the seasoned Notre Dame defense. And, with Morris behind them, even a one-goal deficit seemed hard to climb with just a period to go.

On a seemingly harmless wrist shot, again by Matt Miller and again through traffic, the puck found its way past Morris, though this time it wasn’t deflected. I can’t be sure if Morris just didn’t see it, but the little wrister was perfectly placed and found its way in. Suddenly, the game was tied at two apiece and Ohio State sure looked like it was the favorite to take this one.

Matt Miller tied the game at 2 with his seventh goal of the year, scoring off a pass from Laczynski. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/QrbBsyn6qj

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) March 18, 2018

The Buckeyes had seemingly interminable zone pressure, and then, somehow, a wrist shot that was the epitome of “pucks on net” is the one that finds its way in. Hockey is weird.

But, that’d be all that Morris would let in tonight. He’d save the final 18 Ohio State shots on net and get the Irish to overtime still knotted at 2-2. Notre Dame finally found their offensive attack again toward the end of regulation, but couldn’t beat Romeo in the third. Andrew Oglevie in particular had a high-danger chance in front of Romeo and was robbed.

In overtime, the OSU goalie would keep up the heroics, robbing Notre Dame, reaching behind him on a rebound while surviving the Irish onslaught. Notre Dame hit a post and missed another golden opportunity as a big fat rebound happened to kick directly to Wyatt Ege, who cleared the zone for OSU.

But alas, the good fortune was not to last. At 9:23 of overtime, Cam Morrison streaked in for Notre Dame and put it past Romeo on the rush, giving Notre Dame the Big Ten Tournament championship to go along with their regular season title, all in their first year in the conference.

OSU just had nothing go right for them in overtime. Their stretch passes were open, but missing their targets. There was little sustained pressure, and their No. 1 line of Gerard-Jobst-Laczynski was getting hemmed in their own zone. You could tell from a couple of minutes in how this was probably going to end.

This likely doesn’t take Ohio State out of the running for a No. 1 seed. They were still the favorite for that even with a loss. But a win would’ve locked it up. But, it was a valiant effort, as Ohio State clearly outplayed Notre Dame— the No. 1 team in the country for much of the season— over the second and third periods.

Ohio State showed it can play with anyone, and has nearly as good of a chance as any team in the country to reach the Frozen Four, which would have seemed unimaginable when the season started in late September.
