The battle for who will start for the Buckeyes rages on.

The quarterback battle will always steal the headlines when it comes to any major college football team, and that includes Ohio State. Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow, and Tate Martell have been in the news all spring, but there’s another position in Columbus that’s been a constant competition throughout practices.

The offensive line will feature a couple of returning starters such as Demetrius Knox and Isaiah Prince, and while Brady Taylor seems to have a grip on starting at center, the other two spots are up for grabs. Branden Bowen made plenty of noise last season before he broke his leg, so he might be able to get back to form and take a starting spot, but Matthew Burrell is also around and developing well.

For the coaching staff, it’s not necessarily putting the best individual at one spot, but more about the unit as a whole and who communicates and plays together cohesively. That makes sense, since they’re responsible for opening holes for J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber while also protecting whoever wins the starting quarterback position. It’s certainly something to keep an eye on as camp progresses into the fall.

Speaking of the quarterback battle, Tate Martell continues to have Urban Meyer’s eye in terms of his play this spring. While the favorites for the job, Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow, are still going at it in camp, Martell hasn’t shied away from the competition and provides something a little different than the other two quarterbacks - the ability to elude tacklers and make something out of nothing. Since he’s arrived on campus, Martell’s escapability has been one of his top attributes and certainly can give him an edge in the battle for the starting spot.

J.T. Barrett’s leadership will be missed and that is absolutely a hole that Meyer wants filled by one of the three young quarterbacks. The fact that no quarterback has truly pulled away this spring, means there’s still an open competition which could be concerning depending on how you look at it. But it’s up to Meyer to find the right guy for the job as the Buckeyes gear up for another season.

One name you might not be as familiar with around the Buckeye football program is Wayne Davis. The redshirt sophomore came to Ohio State as a four-star cornerback prospect in 2016, but has switched positions during his time in Columbus, and now lines up at safety.

In Austin Ward’s article above, the writer was asked about another potential move for Davis, with the now-safety moving to outside linebacker because of the depth issues there — especially after Tuf Borland suffered an Achilles injury. But the reality is that Jordan Fuller is the only returning starter at safety, and the Buckeyes have need for bodies at that position as well.

Justin Hilliard and Baron Browning should be more than capable of holding the fort until Borland returns in September, and you also have Dallas Gant and incoming freshman Teradja Mitchell joining the ranks at linebacker.

The Buckeyes lost out to Notre Dame... again.

On Tuesday, the American Hockey Coaches Association announced that Notre Dame men’s hockey coach Jeff Jackson had won the 2018 Spencer Penrose Award as Division I Men’s Ice Hockey CCM/AHCA Coach of the Year. Jackson guided the Fighting Irish to Big Ten regular season and tournament titles, having previously won the award in 2007.

Ohio State’s Steve Rohlik was the honor’s runner-up after the Buckeyes (26-9-5) finished second to Notre Dame (27-9-2) in the regular season, and fell to ND in overtime, 3-2, in the B1G Tournament finals.

Rohlik took over as the head man in Columbus in the spring on 2013, after spending three seasons as the program’s associate head coach. Coming into this week’s national semifinals, he has a career record of 93-72-23, including the current campaign, the squad’s best in 20 years.


Despite Jackson winning the national award, Rohlik was selected as the conference’s coach of the year last month. Both the Irish and the Buckeyes earned No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament, with ND receiving the second overall seed, and OSU getting the fourth.

Jackson won two NCAA Division I titles at Lake Superior State in 1992 and 1994, before taking a decade off from coaching. He returned in 2005, taking over as the head coach at Notre Dame. He currently has a 477-228-79 record in his 19 seasons.

Jackson will look to add to his resume this weekend as his Irish take on Michigan in the nightcap of the Frozen Four on Thursday, April 5 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Rohlik and the Buckeyes will face off against Minnesota Duluth in the opening game at 6:00 p.m. ET. Both contests will be broadcast on ESPN2. The Division I national championship game will take place on Saturday from Saint Paul, MN’s Xcel Energy Center at 7:30 p.m. ET, and will air on ESPN.

Land-Grant Holy Land will have coverage of the Frozen Four throughout the remainder of the week. Congratulations to Coach Rohlik, and good luck to the team in the Twin Cities.

As the confetti and streamers get cleaned up from the Alamodome floor, it’s time to look ahead and guesstimate who will end next season as kings of the college basketball world.

Minneapolis is the host city for the 2019 Final Four, and Bovada, a leading online sportsbook, has listed their odds for who they think will be crowned champions.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have 60-to-1 odds, and have the fourth best odds amongst Big Ten programs. Michigan State has the best odds from the B1G at 20-to-1; Michigan, this year’s national runners-up, follow at 25-to-1; and Purdue rolls in at 50-to-1.

Leading the way are the Duke Blue Devils at 6-to-1. In 1992, the Final Four was at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis—the site where Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley used a second-half rally to blowout Michigan for the national championship. Early oddsmakers seem to think Mike Krzyzewski’s program can win it all again in Minneapolis 27 years later.

The Kansas Jayhawks, who made the Final Four this year, come in at No. 2 in the early odds for the ‘19 natty, with 7-to-1 odds. Right behind Bill Self’s Jayhawks are the Wildcats from Kentucky and Villanova. Both forms of the Wildcats have 8-to-1 odds.

Seriously, what would YOU do if someone just walked up and punched you in the face?

The stories about ridiculous questions coming out of the NFL Combine— including the now infamous one that Dez Bryant had to answer about his mother back in 2010— have become a tradition in recent years; an asinine tradition, but a tradition nonetheless. To deal with this new eventuality, players are now prepped and tested for just about every imaginable question that teams might throw at them; there is even a list of things that they shouldn’t even bother to answer, even if asked directly.

Well, while former Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker didn’t get any questions that crossed any moral or legal boundaries, according to USA Today’s Draft Wire, he did get one that he was not expecting.


In the article, Baker said that the first question that an unnamed NFL coach asked him in their interview session was what he would do if the coach punched him in the face right then and there.

Unfazed by the idiotic inquiry, Baker told USA Today, “To me, being from Cleveland, my natural reaction was, ‘Coach, no disrespect but if you punch me in the face, we’re gonna fight right here.’”

According to Baker, the coach in question just said “Good,” and moved on. However, later in the day, the former Buckeye happened across the coach and asked him why he opened with that specific question. Rather than it being about any unsubstantiated rumor that the coach had heard about Baker, he admitted that it was simply to see how the linebacker would respond.

“He said most guys freeze up or say they wouldn’t do anything when he asks them that,” Baker told Draft Wire. “He said, ‘I don’t know about you, but if somebody were to randomly punch me in the face right now, I wouldn’t just stand there. I’d fight back.’ I guess he liked my response (laughs).”

I’m sure there are a handful of coaches running through your head as to who might have asked the question, if ya know what I mean, man. But, for the most part, Baker said that he didn’t get too many bizarre questions, from this coach or others.

Now, I understand that, in a short period of time, teams are trying to peel back the practiced and rehearsed layers of these players in an effort to understand who they are as people, and how they might be as members of their eventual organizations. But, does asking how someone would respond if they were punched in the face really tell you anything of value?

Football is a game of instincts and reactions, after all. If you really want to know how someone would react if he was punched in the face, punch him in the face. Or, you know, don’t; and instead do your research and talk to his college coaches, professors, teammates, and mentors, to try to see who he is outside of these ridiculously contrived Q&As.

For what it’s worth, the two-time All-Big Ten honoree had a fairly strong performance in the on-field workouts at the combine, finishing fourth in his position group in the 40-yard dash (4.53), third in the broad jump (10’6), sixth in the vertical jump (36.5 inches), and seventh in the bench press (22 reps). He is currently projected as a second or third-round pick.

The Ohio State football team played host to a couple of the country’s top targets at Monday morning’s practice.

Another day, another top prospect in Columbus


Coming off a holiday weekend, the Ohio State football team was back in full force preparing the the upcoming season. While position battles continue to play themselves out, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff are hard at work trying to replace a plethora of talent on both sides of the ball.

Meyer has gotten this Ohio State football program to elite status, despite losing top talent to the NFL Draft year after year. One of the main reasons behind the program’s success is the coaching staff’s success rate in the recruiting game. It seems that every day, Ohio State is playing host to multiple of the country’s top high school football players—and Monday was no different.

4-star S Nick Cross


Class: 2019

Town: Hyattsville, MD/De Matha Catholic

Size: 6’1/207

Offers: Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma, Penn State, Michigan State, etc


Cross has been one of the hottest names in the recruiting world for the class of 2019, and for good reason. The blue-chip safety plays for one of the top high school football programs in the country, and one that has a familiar name for Ohio State fans.

Cross is former teammates with current Buckeye defensive end Chase Young, who is coming off a very impressive freshman season. While Cross isn’t viewed as highly as Young was coming out of high school, he is still viewed as one of the top at his position, and if his senior season lives up to expectation, he will likely see his name climb the ranks of most national college football recruiting databases.

The 247Sports Composite Rankings have Cross listed as the No. 10 S in the class to go along with the No. 184 overall ranking. Cross is also seen as the No. 3 prospect from the talent-rich state of Maryland.

It appears the four-star prospect’s visit to Columbus went as well as expected and Ohio State has to like where it sits in his recruitment. Cross, who holds a reported 32 scholarship offers, has yet to officially release a top schools list but one would have to assume the Buckeyes would be on it.

As it stands today, Notre Dame is viewed as the favorite, holding 75 percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions but look for the Buckeyes to try and get that to swing more in their favor as the recruiting season takes off in full force this spring.

3-star ILB Marcel Lewis


Class: 2019

Town: Clinton Township, MI/Chippewa Valley

Size: 6’1/205

Offers: Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, etc


While Marcel Lewis has yet to receive an official scholarship offer from Ohio State, he could likely see one head his way in the coming months. Lewis plays inside linebacker, which is a position of need in Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class.

While the class as a whole has moved rather slowly, there hasn’t been much noise regarding Ohio State’s efforts at recruiting the position. The Buckeyes have offered the likes of five-star Shane Lee, four-star Lance Dixon, and three-star Keith Maguire, none appear to be Ohio State leans. Because of that, the Buckeyes will need to expand their search and Lewis could be their go-to. Also, poaching a recruit out of Michigan is always a nice benefit.

A three-star recruit, Lewis is seen as the No. 25 ILB in the country and is the No. 18 recruit from TSUN. While these ranking may appear low, Lewis has an undeniable skill set and has the potential to become a high-level college football player.

Currently, the 247Sports Crystal Ball is split 50/50 between Michigan and Michigan State, but if Lewis were to receive the coveted Ohio State offer, they would have to be viewed as a legitimate contender.

Katie Smith, one of the most decorated basketball players in program history at Ohio State, recently added another honor to her trophy case as she was elected to the 2018 Naismith Hall of Fame class. Smith played for the Buckeyes from 1992-96, and earned Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 1993 as she led her team to a national runner-up finish. After college, Smith played for the Columbus Quest of the ABL, earning two All-Star recognitions and two league titles in 1997 and 1998. Moving on to the WNBA, Smith was a seven-time All-Star and two-time champion. She ended her career as the leading point scorer in women’s professional basketball history with 7,885 points. On the international stage, Smith was also part of Team USA for its 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic gold medal runs.

After retiring from her playing career, Smith worked as an assistant head coach of the New York Liberty. She was named head coach of the Liberty last fall and will start the season off in May.

The Naismith Hall of Fame honors both male and female players, coaches, referees and contributors from all levels of basketball. Other honorees in the 2018 class include fellow WNBA star Tina Thompson, who took the Houston Comets to four WNBA championships, as well as Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Ray Allen and Grant Hill. Smith was selected in her first year of eligibility for the hall, having retired from professional basketball following the 2013 season. The enshrinement ceremony is scheduled for September in Springfield, Mass.

“The athletic, rangy forward might not have been facing the kind of slam-dunk decision of a top-5 pick, but all signs point to him being ready to move on to the next level. And neither he nor the Buckeyes should feel bad about it.”

Keita Bates-Diop was the lifeblood of Ohio State basketball in Chris Holtmann’s first season as head coach. Given his prolific performance throughout this season, especially given that he missed so much of 2016-17 due to injury and illness, it was not a surprise to see the redshirt junior declare for the NBA Draft even with a year of eligibility remaining at Ohio State.

Even so, declaring for the NBA Draft--a much shorter draft than the NFL’s version--can seem risky for a player who is neither a breakout freshman (e.g., Trae Young) or a career player who has had a big name for years (e.g., Moritz Wagner). Last year, Maryland junior Melo Trimble, who by most standards was having a great career at Maryland, forewent his final season of eligibility to test the draft waters, and ultimately was not selected. Bates-Diop has the disadvantage of having played on a team that did not make the NCAA Tournament for two of his four seasons with the program, so he hasn’t been seen on the national stage to the same degree that someone like Wagner has.

However, Bates-Diop’s decision remains a solid one. College players can enter the NBA Draft Combine while maintaining their NCAA eligibility as long as they withdraw from the draft within 10 days of the conclusion of the combine. So, if a player receives feedback which indicates he might not be drafted (or might not go as high as he hopes), he can still return to school and finish out his eligibility. That scenario seems unlikely for Bates-Diop, who is projected as a late first-round pick and one of just a few upperclassmen projected to be taken in the opening round. And if things don’t work out in the NBA, there are numerous options to play internationally with more-than-livable contracts.


The Ohio State Buckeyes synchronized swimming team defended its national title Saturday with a win at nationals in Arizona. The victory marks the 31st championship in program history for the squad, who won the title last season in Columbus as the host school for the championships. The 31 titles are the most of any program at Ohio State, and it was a strong finish to an undefeated regular season and a win at the North Regional Championships

Ohio State finished the day with 96 points--six ahead of second-place finisher Stanford. Ohio State units won both first and third place at the team competition to take the crucial points advantage. The Buckeyes narrowly edged out Stanford, earning 84.8667 points to the Cardinal’s 84.800 to secure the gold medal.

On the individual side, Buckeye senior Monica Velazquez-Stiak was the Individual High Point Award recipient, taking home two golds and a silver medal. She earned her individual gold with fellow senior Alyssa Hoying in the duet freestyle, and brought home a silver in the trio freestyle with Hoying and Noelle St. John. Laila Huric, a sophomore from Italy, took home the silver in the solo free event to round out the Buckeyes’ individual medals.

“I think the best leader is going to win the job. Because obviously, J.T. was the leader of the team last year and someone’s going to have to step up.”

With all eyes on the Ohio State quarterback competition, there is little doubt as to the tangible skills of each of the competitors. Joe Burrow, Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell all came to Columbus as four-star prospects. Burrow and Haskins have both seen playing time as backups in the last two seasons, coming in to relieve J.T. Barrett when necessary and performing competently. In addition, all are, by this point, well-familiar with the Ohio State program. Burrow is entering his fourth year under head coach Urban Meyer. Haskins is coming into his third season, while Martell, who redshirted last year, will be entering his second. All have had the chance to work under co-offensive coordinators Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day and, perhaps more importantly, witness the impact that Barrett’s leadership has had on the team as a whole and the offense in particular.

The Buckeyes are losing more than just a quarterback with the departure of Barrett, who has been the go-to man for what seems like forever in Columbus. Barrett holds most major program records when it comes to passing, but, in many ways, the intangibles that he brought to the table may be missed even more. Barrett is the only three-time captain in program history, and has been the team’s unquestioned leader since taking over the starting quarterback role for Braxton Miller following Miller’s injury prior to the 2014 season. Whoever takes over for Barrett will be looked to fill a similar role--a sentiment echoed by Day. “When we look at quarterbacks to evaluate quarterbacks, we’re looking for guys who are competitors, guys who are tough, guys who are leaders, guys who have great football intelligence and then also guys who are great decision-makers.”

With less than two weeks until the annual spring game, Meyer says that there’s still room for improvement.

As the calendar flips to April, the Ohio State Buckeye football program now officially has less than two weeks left on their 2018 spring practice schedule. Halfway through the month of workouts, head coach Urban Meyer met with the media on Monday morning to discuss the progress that he’s seen in his team.

The Buckeyes will conclude their spring sessions on Saturday, April 14 in the annual spring game. The intra-squad scrimmage will kickoff at approximately 1:45 p.m. ET, following a “Showdown at the Shoe” lacrosse matchup between Ohio State and Michigan.

Quarterback Position Battle

• Meyer said that it is day-to-day as to which quarterback is playing the best. He said that he’s seen individual growth in all of the players, but no one has yet to separate himself.
• The head coach would prefer for one QB to just go out and take the job, but without that, he likes the competition. “You wish one would take it, but that just hasn’t happened yet.”
• He added that Tate Martell has a skill set similar to former QB J.T. Barrett. Meyer said multiple times that Martell has an incredible skill set.
• Meyer said that early during the spring practice, the void of missing Barrett was obvious, but that it is closing quickly.
• He said that he wasn’t sure if they would have a clear leader at the position coming out of spring practice.

Depth Chart

• Meyer said that the receivers still have a long way to go, but that they have been getting better as things have progressed.
• The head coach praises the development of Thayer Munford. With the chance to become a starter as a redshirt-freshman, Meyer said that he has been very impressed with Munford’s work ethic.
• He went into a bit of detail about the lineman’s recruiting, including that athletic director Gene Smith was involved in signing off on bringing him in, given some issues in his past.
• Meyer said that the defense is far ahead of the offense at this point in practice.
• After losing players to the NFL for years, Meyer said that, “if you dont have leaders it’s your job to develop them.”
• On defensive end Davon Hamilton, Meyer said, “you see a heartbeat there.” He added that Hamilton’s had a very good spring.
• Meyer said that tight end Luke Farrell has been grading out as a champion. Last week was “as good a week as he’s had,” according to Meyer.

Injury Updates

• Meyer said that the coaching staff was trying to protect returning starters Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones on the defense; as well as Parris Campbell and other offensive veterans.

Miscellaneous

• Meyer said that they are especially careful when recruiting players from difficult backgrounds. He said that the program is very healthy right now, and the worst thing that you can do is to bring in somebody who would cause problems with that environment.
