It’s another award for the decorated Buckeye.

He may have already declared for the NBA Draft, but Keita Bates-Diop is still picking up awards for a stellar 2017-18 campaign on the hardwood with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The redshirt junior from Normal, Ill., was selected as a Second Team All-American by the Associated Press. KBD also was the only Buckeye to crack the All-American teams or the honorable mention list.

Joining Bates-Diop on the Second Team are Trevon Bluiett (Xavier), Jock Landale (St.Mary’s), Miles Bridges (Michigan State) and Jevon Carter (West Virginia). In total, three members from the Big Ten were selected to the All-American teams, with Purdue’s Carsen Edwards making the Third Team.

For those wondering, the First Team list includes a star-studded lineup, with two of the All-Americans going head-to-head in the Final Four. Villanova’s Jalen Brunson will go up against Devonte’ Graham and the Kansas Jayhawks; the other three spots on the team went to Deandre Ayton (Arizona), Trae Young (Oklahoma) and Marvin Bagley III (Duke).

Two of the country’s top recruits list the Buckeyes among their final schools.

Ohio State spring practices are underway and Urban Meyer appears to be learning just as much about the upcoming season's roster as are the fans.

With position battles underway and losing assumed starting middle linebacker Tuf Borland, the idea of next man up has never held more true. Meyer is one of the best at ensuring that when the team loses a top level talent for whatever reason, the team has talented players on the sideline willing and able to step up.

The main reason Meyer has been successful at replacing talent is his incredible knack for recruiting. With the spring season upon us, a rather slow 2019 recruiting class will likely pick up steam in the coming months. Ohio State has already successfully secured commitments from three blue-chip recruits and is hoping to continue that streak.

Four-star WR lists Ohio State in top 8

One of the positions the Ohio State Buckeyes target every year is wide receiver. Meyer knows that it is critical to have speed and athleticism on the outside of the field to create space for the run game. Fortunately for the Buckeyes one of the top WR’s in the 2019 recruiting class included Ohio State in his top eight schools moving forward.

Jameson Williams (Saint Louis, MO / Cardinal Ritter College Prep) took to Twitter Monday afternoon to release his top schools and Ohio State has made the cut, but they will have some stiff competition during the rest of Williams recruitment.

Along with Ohio State, Williams included Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Oregon, UCLA, USC and Florida State in his list of schools he will focus on for the remainder of his recruitment.

Williams is one of the top WRs in the 2019 recruiting class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 43 WR and the No. 249 overall recruit. Williams is also the No. 6 rated prospect from the state of Missouri.

Williams has the hands and speed to excel as a receiver in college; and standing at 6-foot-2, he has the size to go up and grab contested balls. However, if Williams wants to truly succeed at the next level, he will need to add some muscle as he currently weighs in at 160 pounds.

Offered by Ohio State last summer, Williams has managed to find himself on campus for an unofficial visit, but look for the Buckeyes to get him on campus either this spring or during the season for an official visit. While it is still rather early in Williams’ recruitment, Ohio State is viewed as the favorite to land Williams holding 100 percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

Four-star safety lists Ohio State among top schools

Late Sunday night, one of the top safeties in the country took to Twitter to announce his top schools. Land-Grant Holy Land’s own Charles Doss briefly mentioned this in Monday’s State Secrets column but we are going to dig into this a little bit more. As it isn’t every day a recruit lists a school in their top schools without holding an official offer yet.

Recruitment is open to bigger and better opportunities !

— JP⁵ (@jalyn_phillips) March 25, 2018

Jalyn Phillips (Lawrenceburg, GA / Archer) has been seeing his recruitment take off in the early months of 2018. Since the turn of the year, Phillips has received numerous scholarship offers from some of the top college football programs in the country, but not Ohio State.

However, despite holding an impressive 54 offers, Phillips has somehow found a way to narrow his decision down to 10 schools and while Ohio State has yet to officially offer him, the team found itself included in his list. Along with Ohio State, Phillips also included Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Clemson, USC, Nebraska and Tennessee in his top schools.

Similar to the WR position, defensive backs will remain a priority year in and year out for Ohio State recruiting. As long as the Buckeyes’ DB machine keeps churning out NFL-ready players in the secondary, Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff will need to keep bringing in the best high school talents to cover the attrition.

Phillips is currently just the No. 29 S in the country and the No. 353 overall recruit in 2019, but if he continues to impress at spring camps and has a successful senior campaign, his rankings will surely climb.

As his rankings climb, expect even more offers to come in for Phillips, including the coveted Ohio State offer. If this does in fact happen, look for the Buckeyes to try their best to get him on campus as the kid already holds the University in high regards.

Phillips recruitment will be one for Ohio State fans to follow because it could be a situation where they would be in the driver’s seat immediately following an offer.

LGHL Kelsey Mitchell becomes 1st 4-time All-American in program history

The senior ended her career as the Big Ten’s leading scorer.

“In all four years of her career, Mitchell averaged at least 22 points per game and her team made the NCAA Tournament after missing it the year prior to her arrival.”

-Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

Ohio State basketball guard Kelsey Mitchell became the first four-time All-American in program history as she was selected to the Associated Press second team. A first-team selection in 2016, Mitchell also made the second-team in 2015 as a freshman and 2017 as a junior. She has been a first-team All-Big Ten selection in all four seasons at Ohio State as well, and was a three-time Big Ten Player of the Year in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Along with Mitchell, Iowa forward Megan Gustafson represented the Big Ten as she also made the AP second team.

In her senior season, Mitchell averaged greater than 24 points per game, good for third-best in the country. She also became just the 13th player in NCAA history to score 3,000 career points, hitting the mark in January against Indiana. Following the Buckeyes’ loss to Central Michigan in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Mitchell officially ended her career at the No. 2 spot in all-time scoring in Division I with 3,402 points, and remains the Big Ten’s leading career scorer. Mitchell also ended her college career as one of the most prolific three-point shooters in NCAA history. She holds the all-time records for both threes made (497) and attempted (1,286).

The guard has been a leader on the team since her arrival in 2014. Starting 35 games as a freshman, Mitchell averaged 24.9 points per game. She finished her career having started all 139 games she played in, all while leading Ohio State to four-straight NCAA Tournament appearances. She finished her career having averaged 24.5 points per game over four seasons.

Mitchell looks to be one of the top-two prospects in this year’s WNBA Draft, along with South Carolina’s A’Ja Wilson. The draft is scheduled for April 12 in New York.

“Joe Burrow is on pace to graduate in May. If it came down to him knowing he’s not going to be Ohio State’s quarterback in 2018, he could transfer somewhere else and be eligible immediately with two years to play.”

-Steven M. Sipple, Lincoln Journal Star

Ohio State’s quarterback battle has been the talk of the Big Ten offseason. With the departure of J.T. Barrett, who seemed to run the offense forever, there is a three-way competition to fill the void left by the three-time Big Ten quarterback of the year. Dwayne Haskins, Joe Burrow and Tate Martell are all part of a wide-open quarterback battle as they head toward the spring game next month.

However, the way this quarterback competition plays out could have implications beyond Columbus. For example, Burrow, a redshirt junior, could graduate from Ohio State in May, enabling him to transfer to another school without sitting out a season. This idea is not a new one. Last season, following the Buckeyes’ Cotton Bowl win over USC, some talk emerged of Burrow potentially transferring. While Burrow had been the de facto backup in 2016, it was Haskins who most recently filled in for Barrett following the senior’s injury against Michigan, completing six passes for 94 yards.

Should Haskins win the starting role after spring practice, Burrow would have a much more compelling reason to transfer. One potential landing spot for the Athens native would be Nebraska--a program which currently has three scholarship quarterbacks in the locker room. First-year head coach Scott Frost, who himself was a transfer to the Huskers in the ‘90s, has said that he would ideally like five quarterbacks on scholarship. With Tanner Lee departing for the NFL, sophomore Patrick O’Brien is the only quarterback on the roster who has seen playing time.

Burrow would be an attractive candidate to move to Lincoln. A former Ohio Mr. Football, Burrow came to Ohio State as a four-star pro-style quarterback. He has spent a year under the combined powers of Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, and would further benefit from the tutelage of Frost. On a personal level, his father, Jimmy, also played and coached at Nebraska.

“It’s a lot of stress. Center is every bit important as quarterback. I don’t know if they’re great players or not.”

-Urban Meyer, via Patrick Murphy, 247Sports

Heading into last season, Billy Price had huge shoes to fill as he made the shift from guard to center. Price was following in the footsteps of Pat Elflein, who had made the same jump the previous season. The move worked out well for both players, who each earned the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center at the end of their respective seasons. Both also were following up on solid performances by Corey Linsley and Jacoby Boren, who had strong careers at center for the Buckeyes in Urban Meyer’s first seasons at the helm.

Now, however, the center position does not seem as clear cut. While Price and Elflein were already well-regarded offensive linemen, there doesn’t seem to be a natural fit for center on Meyer’s roster--something which the head coach finds more troubling than his three-way battle for starting quarterback. Brady Taylor, a fifth-year senior, would seem the logical choice to fill the void left by Price, but Meyer does not appear ready to name him as the starter just yet. Taylor saw limited playing time late in games when he came in to relieve Price. Other players in contention for the center spot include Josh Myers, Matt Burrell and Josh Alabi.

“I think when you have quality players going at it, it’s no stress at all,” Meyer said of his quarterback battle. “Who is it going to be? I don’t know. But I know they work really hard and I see not two but three guys that think they should be the quarterback.”

Unfortunately for Meyer, he doesn’t know exactly what sort of players he has going out for center this season. While Price holds the record at Ohio State for consecutive starts with 55, this record also means that other players did not get much game-time experience which would have helped to inform this offseason decision.
