Plus Aaron Craft on his favorite moment from his OSU playing days, and the weekend’s spring sport tournament list.

“Come down and spend time watching us,” Johnson said. “See us do it. I’ll help you — because we’re in the same family. When we say, ‘O-H’ we’re talking about everybody. That’s why we’re here.”

-Ohio State coach Larry Johnson via Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

Despite only a week’s notice of the event, the football coaching clinic held at Northmont High School was a valuable resource, as high school coaches from around the area had time to work with and learn from Ohio State coaches Larry Johnson and Greg Studwara.

Hartman describes the event — in a way that leaves me more than a little envious about his experience — as more than he could have imagined, with what he expected to be a quick one hour event turning into a 2.5 hour workshop with non-stop lessons. He described a renewed insight into how not only the Buckeye coaches train their players and what things they consider the most important, but also how Ohio State football is helping develop the high school programs around the state.

The whole article is a really fascinating journey into the different philosophies of specific position groups and how the Buckeyes develop their players to be confident in the work they do and how it translates to the NFL.

Of particular note was Johnson talking about what Hartman describes as the “[taekwondo]-inspired pass rush moves he’s taught Pro Bowlers such as Tamba Hali at Penn State and All-American brothers Joey and Nick Bosa at Ohio State.”

The Bosa brothers are phenoms at both the collegiate and NFL levels, so learning some of the concepts that work at both levels helped show the high school coaches in the area how they can challenge their players to step up their games.

My favorite part about the piece was that at the end of the clinic, Johnson handed out his business card and told the coaches his door is open. That kind of goodwill among the coaching community doesn’t often go unnoticed — or unused — with both the high school programs benefiting and Ohio State earning the trust of potential (and better developed) recruits from the area.

“The Final Four was obviously amazing, but the biggest game that sticks out to me was my Sophomore year at Michigan State – the last regular season game of the year. We needed to win to win a share of the Big Ten title. We were on the road, it was Draymond Green’s senior night.”

-Aaron Craft via Harry Wexner, 11W

For the past several years, there’s been a rosey-cheeked, defensive pest missing from the Buckeyes lineup. Aaron Craft graduated from Ohio State in 2014 and after two seasons playing in the NBA’s G-league — where he won Defensive Player of the Year for the 2014-15 season, and All-Defense honors in both years—, he and his wife packed their bags for Europe.

Craft currently suits up for AS Monaco in the French league. With Craft in the fold, Monaco made a deep run in the 2018 Basketball Champions League. (The basketball Champions League has a similar setup as the soccer Champions League).

I’ll read just about anything written about Craft, but this interview with Eleven Warriors was particularly interesting. When asked about his favorite basketball memory at Ohio State, it would’ve been easy to go with the Final Four run his senior season, but instead Craft chose a game from his sophomore year to hang his hat on.

In order to earn a share of the Big Ten title that season, the Buckeyes needed a big win on the road against a Michigan State team that featured now-NBA All-Star Draymond Green. It was a team effort throughout the contest, but a shot by William Buford at the buzzer gave Ohio State the victory, silencing the Spartans’ home crowd.

“Walking out of the stadium in complete quiet was awesome. Then going into the locker room and celebrating with coach and the players is one of my favorite memories,” Craft told Wexner in his interview.

The Rubik’s Cube-maven also spoke to Wexner about his future plans after basketball, and while it doesn’t sound like he’ll find his way back to the Buckeye bench as a coach, his love for Ohio State and the Buckeye community wouldn’t make the idea completely unrealistic.

It’s tournament time for the spring-sport Buckeyes

Men’s Tennis

The Ohio State men’s tennis team is hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament, running May 11th and 12th (Live Scoring). The Buckeyes are 24-0 in the past 12 years in the first and second rounds of the tournament, and they’ve continued that streak in 2018.

There’s a real chance the Buckeyes claim yet another NCAA Championship, following an impressive season that included a 15-0 home game streak and 11-0 conference record. The team is also riding a 17-match win streak heading into the tournament, with an overall 29-2 record for the year.

Track and Field

The Buckeyes are headed to Bloomington, Indiana to compete in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, from May 11-13 (Schedule of Events | Live Results | Watch: BTN | Watch: FloTrack). All 13 Big Ten teams will be in attendance for the weekend’s event, and Ohio State will look to build on their indoor championship just a few months ago.

Last year, the Buckeyes finished No. 4 in the outdoor event, with their last titles coming in back-to-back years, 2011 and 2012. Thirty-two individual Buckeyes rank among the top-10 in the conference at their respective events, in addition to both the men’s and women’s 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

Rowing

The No. 4 ranked Buckeyes will compete for the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, at Eagle creek Park in Indianapolis beginning at 9 a.m. ET (follow @OhioState_WROW on Twitter for live updates). This year’s Ohio State rowing team features 27 returning letterwinners from last year’s team that finished fifth in the 2017 NCAA Championship.

Their last home regatta of the season was on April 21, when the Buckeyes went undefeated against Notre Dame in the first session, and No. 19 Duke in the second. They’ll look to extend that win streak as they head into conference and then NCAA championships.

Women’s Tennis

The Buckeye season concludes with a 4-1 loss to Clemson in the @NCAATennis first round.

Walter.0.jpg

The Buckeyes have offered another big time offensive lineman prospect from the DC-Maryland-Virginia area.

Ohio State’s football program has seen a busy week in the headlines. With the news of Joe Burrow announcing his intent to transfer, the attrition of the Buckeye roster has seen a fair share of drama. Now, one may see this as negative, but in all reality, this is the fate that’s not out of the ordinary when a program recruits as well as Urban Meyer and Ohio State. Ironically, it may be hard to wrap your thoughts around talented players leaving, but when a talented prospect is still considered to be a possible backup, it’s easy to see where the Buckeyes have an embarrassment of riches.

With this recruiting success, the Buckeyes have proved their formula works—and they continued to dishing out their latest offers to prospects on Thursday.

OSU to the DMV

Even before the Meyer tenure, Ohio State had success recruiting in the Maryland and Virginia area. Especially with Meyer at the helm, the success in the DMV has been second to none. Pulling top prospects seemingly each and every year with guys such as Dwayne Haskins and Chase Young, you can see why the Buckeyes like to branch out to that region each year and pitch why coming to Columbus and playing for Ohio State is better than going anywhere else. Yesterday, Ohio State was back in the DMV with their recruiting hats on and one prospect was given the all so coveted Buckeye offer.

Walter Rouse, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive tackle, took to his Twitter account yesterday evening to announce his latest offer from Ohio State. The 2019 three-star talent holds over 20 scholarship offers and, in the last two weeks, has seen his recruitment take off a little bit as Big Ten schools such as Indiana and Michigan State threw their name into the hat for Walter’s services.

BLESSED to receive an offer from The Ohio State University! #GoBuckeyes ⭕#StriveForGreatness ⚪pic.twitter.com/igu63vuBi7

— Walter Rouse (@wrouse19) May 10, 2018

While Ohio State’s offer may now be the “biggest” to his name, you an expect this will certainly put the Buckeye near if not at the top. If Ohio State does in fact become a serious threat to land Rouse, they would be gaining the ninth best player in Washington D.C. and a top 100 offensive line prospect. Time will tell if this offer will become more, but if a visit does come to fruition then it’s easy to see the interest between both parties is real. 2019 is a very important year for offensive line recruiting, considering the Buckeyes are planning on trying to stockpile the top talent they can land. If so, they’ve struck gold before in the DMV and they may be able to yet again.

Committed QB received OSU offer

The ever so popular recruitment of the quarterback position is a topic that is seeing some serious changes over the past few weeks. For more than a while it seemed as if Houston native Grant Gunnell would be the 2019 QB in Ohio State’s class. After what was said to be a successful official visit for Gunnell, a pledge did not come (yet).

To add, the Buckeyes also dished an offer to current Michigan State commit Dwan Mathis just a week ago. Fast forward a week, and Ohio State is at it again offering another committed QB in the 2019 class. This time it’s Ryan Hilinski, a current South Carolina commit.

Humbled to say I have received an offer from The Ohio State! #GoBuckeyes ⭕pic.twitter.com/YFDHkGuN5N

— Big Bo (@ryan_hilinski) May 11, 2018

As the Buckeyes search full-steam ahead for the leader of their 2019 class, the line of un-committed prospect looks to be slimming and the poaching season may be in full effect. Hilinski, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound pro-style QB from Orange, California, is currently ranked as the No. 6 QB in the country and Cali’s 19th best player. If Ohio State is to become a serious player for Ryan, a visit must occur; while that may be easier said than done, never rule out Ryan Day and Urban Meyer when it comes to recruiting.

If this dynamic duo can get Hilinski on campus for at least an official visit, then they have a shot. While Gunnell may still be the favorite of the class, the coaching staff is showing that they’re wasting no time in looking around to find their guy. With the QB room in Columbus becoming a little less full recently, the Buckeyes need to restock the shelves a bit with top talent. With that said, full trust in this staff has to be given with their continued success each year.

Keep them away from TTUN

In the past few articles, it’s been mentioned how well Ohio State has done recruiting in enemy territory. More specifically: recruiting in the state of Michigan. With several prospects holding Ohio State offers in the 2020 class, the Buckeyes have wasted no time in trying to create—and solidify—strong relationships with many around the Detroit area’s top programs.

One receiver prospect who has garnered serious attention from not only Ohio State, but many other top programs, is Rashawn Williams. After seeing Williams play personally for Legacy Football Organizations, Legacy Elite All-State 7v7 team, Rashawn has both the top end speed as well as the ball skills to make for a more than dynamic receiver at the next level.

A Michigan star says #OhioState has an amazing program. #Buckeyes have offered and @troule19 plans to visit #OSU again FREE https://t.co/ocCA9tlBel

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) May 10, 2018

Yesterday, in an article with Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts, Rashawn took a minute to talk in detail about his interest in Ohio State’s program. With Coach Coombs now in the NFL ranks, the recruiting in Michigan will be done a little differently, but hoping for much of the same success patterns and results. One thing’s for sure: the Buckeyes wouldn’t mind at all adding Williams to the fold.

The fifth best player in Michigan for 2020 and a top 50 receiver, Rashawn would be more than welcomed in Columbus.

Quick Hits

• Four-star point guard DJ Carton announced his list of top schools. Listed by the 247sports composite as the top prospect for Iowa in the 2019 class, Carlton included the Buckeyes amongst his six top schools.

• 2020 safety Jordan Morant received an offer from OSU. Morant holds over 10 offers already, and 247sports has Morant graded as a four-star prospect and the No. 3 prospect from New Jersey.

OSU’s tournament was a short one, so let’s just talk about how Lilli Piper set the school’s new single-season home run record.

The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes faced off against No. 12 Iowa in the first round of the 2018 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night, and guess what? Lilli Piper hit another home run.

The Buckeyes didn’t win, and it got pretty ugly near the end. Despite a close 1-1 score for the first six innings, the Hawkeyes picked up four runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 victory. Iowa will face No. 4 seeded Northwestern — who had a first-round bye — on Friday at 8 p.m. ET (on the Big Ten Network) in the quarterfinals.

With Shelby McCombs on the mound for the Buckeyes, Iowa’s Mallory Killian grounded out to 2b to open the matchup, followed by Allie Wood striking out swinging and Angela Schmiederer grounding out to first for a quick top of the first.

Then, my favorite part of Ohio State softball: the at-bats.

Bailee Sturgeon struck out swinging, but then Lilli “The GOAT” Piper stepped up to the plate. With a 2-2 count, the team’s leading home run-hitter nailed her 20th of the season to set the Buckeyes up 1-0. McCombs and Niki Carver would both strike out swinging to close out the first inning of the night.

It was another quick at-bat for the Hawkeyes, with McKenzie Schneider being walked and three of her teammates striking and grounding out. But it was also a quick second inning for the Buckeyes who went three-and-out heading into the third.

Finally, things started to get interesting with Iowa back at the plate. Daniella Ibarra opened with a single to center field, but was thrown out at second base shortly thereafter off of a hit by Cheyenne Pratt. It wasn’t in vein, Pratt stole second and ended up scoring on a passed ball three at-bats later, tying the Buckeyes 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Schmiederer grounded out to shortstop following the score for Iowa’s third out of the inning.

With Ohio State back in the dugout, Amy Balich led off with a fly ball to centerfield, but Taylor White followed it up with a shot to right field, making it to first. With Bailee Sturgeon at the plate, White stole second as Sturgeon eventually took first on a walk. The Hawkeyes were smart to give Piper a free-pass as she made her way back to the plate, advancing the runners and loading the bases.

Unfortunately, similar to inning No. 1, McCombs and Carver both followed up Piper’s at-bat with strikeouts, stranding three Buckeyes on base -- and wasting a prime opportunity to take the lead. The third inning finished with the teams tied 1-1.

The Hawkeyes got on base early in the fourth inning, but Havyn Monteer — who was pinch-running for Libby — was quickly thrown out by Ohio State when she was caught trying to steal second.

The rest of the inning went pretty quickly with a single to short stop by Bogar, followed by two outs to finish out the top of the fourth. Ohio State wasn’t able to do much better, with one hit and two players left on base heading into the fifth, with the score still tied 1-1.

Ohio State pitcher Shelby McCombs would strike out three Hawkeyes in a row for a super quick top of the inning. Back at the plate, the Buckeyes opened with a Sturgeon line-drive to third base for an out. Piper stepped up and hit a single to left field, taking first base and eventually stealing second.

With another batter out before and after her second base snag, the Buckeyes would close out the fifth inning with Piper left hanging, and the score still at one all.

Iowa’s next at-bat would see six batters come to the plate, but no runs scored with two players left on the bases to close out the top of the sixth -- McCombs also claimed her eighth strikeout of the night. It was a quick three-and-out for Ohio State at the plate to close out the inning.

The Hawkeyes started off the top of the seventh strong with a single, a bunt, and an errant pitch that led to Lea Thompson advancing to third, setting Iowa up in scoring position. The Buckeyes called for a pitching change, moving McCombs to DH and Morgan Ray taking over the circle for Ohio State.

The change didn’t help much, with another wild pitch bringing Thompson home, letting Iowa take their first lead of the night, 2-1, with no outs and Ibarro on third. The Buckeyes would get their first out of the inning with a play at home, keeping Ibarro from advancing the Hawkeyes’ lead.

Iowa would load the bases again thanks to a couple of hits and a Schmiederer walk. Despite Ray getting her first strikeout of the game, she also had another errant pitch, advancing all the runners and putting the Buckeyes down 3-1 with two outs. The first three runs for the Hawkeyes came courtesy of passed balls and wild pitches.

However, the next at-bat saw Libby single to left field, bringing in another runner, to make it 4-1 — and increasingly more challenging for the Buckeyes to bounce back — with runners still on third and first.

It was a short stint on the mound for Ray who was swapped with McCombs, as the Buckeyes tried like hell to get their third out to finally stop the bleeding. (Narrator: the bleeding didn’t stop.) Schneider stepped up to the plate for the Hawkeyes and got an RBI single, making it 5-1, Iowa. Finally, Thompson grounded out to short stop to end the Buckeyes’ misery.

Finally with a chance to put some runs on the board, the Buckeyes opened the bottom of the seventh with Stevens connecting on her first pitch, with a single to right field. White was walked right after, filling two bases with zero outs. Sturgeon connected next, but White was thrown out at second — we can debate about whether or not she wasn’t really safe — leaving runners on third and first.

Just like her second at-bat, Piper was once again walked, loading the bases with McCombs heading to the plate. The Buckeye pitcher would go down swinging, as would Carver to close out the seventh inning, the game, and Ohio State’s run in this year’s Big Ten Tournament.
