Both are from Georgia, and both are part of classes in the not-too-distant future.

As we keep on pushing through the offseason, the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff is pushing through the recruiting trail. Already this week, offers made their way to sought after prospects in the 2019 class and beyond.

That theme was kept up on Wednesday, as more offers found their way to potential Buckeyes. Let’s take a look at who picked up that coveted offer from the Scarlet and Gray.

Zone 6 enters the Peach State

One of those offers went out to wide receiver Jayden Thomas (Atlanta / Pace Academy) from the 2021 class. Thomas, an Atlanta native, made the offer known on Twitter around noontime locally on Wednesday.

Extremely blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University ⚪⚫@OSUCoachMeyer @ryandaytime @OhioStAthletics @OhioStateFB #gobucks pic.twitter.com/ZXQMEmWL8e

— Jayden Thomas (@jgpt333) June 13, 2018

Ohio State entered the race early for Thomas— but they weren’t the first major school to come knocking. On June 11, North Carolina made an offer to the 6-foot-2 pass catcher; the following day, both Virginia and Michigan entered the fray by making an offer. Even though the Bucks are fourth to send out an offer to Thomas, according to 247sports, they are at the front of the line in terms of recognizing his skill and potential.

The receiving corps will be a position of need down the line for OSU. This year, seniors Parris Campbell and Terry McLaurin, as well as juniors Binjimen Victor and Austin Mack will be the go-to targets for quarterback Dwayne Haskins. However, there‘s a chance that some of the juniors will not be returning for the 2019 season if they have breakout campaigns in 2018. This creates a chain reaction of inexperience in the receiving department as a whole, which will eventually show at some point.

If everything goes according to plan for OSU, then Ellijah Gardiner, Kamryn Babb, L’Chistian Smith, Cameron Brown, Chris Olave and Xavier Johnson would still be on the roster by the time the 2021 season rolls around. However, by looking at the recent trend of success from Buckeye wideouts, some will leave early; it’s a fact of life. There will always be a need to recruit guys who can catch the football well. With the Buckeyes already on the trail for Thomas, they set themselves up to be in the mix by the time the recruiting rankings come out. If the Pace Academy standout is already getting offers from major schools this far out from his graduation, then he has some obvious talent. If Ohio State can be the one that wins his commitment, then looking into the deep future for WR talent becomes a little bit less stressful.

The QB for 2020?

We’ve mentioned it at least twice over the past week: The QB options for the Buckeyes are slim in the 2019 cycle. Assuming OSU punts on getting a QB in the upcoming class, what looks possible in 2020 in terms of signal callers?

Co-offensive coordinator and QB coach Ryan Day is already ahead of that question, and has found a passer that could fit in the Bucks’ scheme. CJ Dixon (Loganville, GA / Grayson) is listed as a pro-style QB in the 2020 class, and was the latest passer to pickup an offer to play college football in Columbus, Ohio.

TRULY BLESSED & THANKFUL TO RECEIVE AN OFFER FROM OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY #4shohumblebeast @therealkwat @ryandaytime @OhioStAthletics pic.twitter.com/AnLhSVFkAD

— CJ Dixon 2020 (@cj_dixon2020) June 13, 2018

From a rankings standpoint, there isn’t anything out on Dixon. But, if big-time offers keep coming through, then it won’t be a surprise if the Loganville, Ga., native sees his name at (or near) the top of QBs in the 2020 recruiting class.

Last month, Boston College sent Dixon an offer— and only bigger offers have followed. On June 9, the Florida Gators threw their name into the hat for Dixon’s services. A day prior to picking up the Gators’ offer, the 6-foot-5, 210-pounder was attending a camp by the Florida State Seminoles. With an Ohio State offer now in hand, it wouldn’t shock me if Florida State or another SEC school mailed out an offer to Dixon before the end of the month.

If a QB isn’t taken in ‘19 by the Buckeyes, then they will absolutely need one in 2020. The process of recruiting—especially in a position of need—can never start too early.

Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has earned the right to troll Michigan if he wants

For what he did for the Buckeye program, Tressel gets a free pass to say whatever he wants, in my opinion.

“[Jim Tressel’s] Ohio State connection still runs pretty deep. Deep enough for the man of a million sweater vests to absolutely roast a Michigan fan...”

-Richard Johnson, SBNation

According to former Buckeye great James Laurinaitis, he was paired with his former coach Jim Tressel and a random Michigan fan at a golf outing earlier this week. After the Michigan man failed to reach the green on a par three, Tress reportedly said, “Typical Michigan, coming up short.”

Not only is this a perfect way for him to remind everyone that actually, the spot was good, but, as far as I’m concerned, despite whatever ill-will some might harbor towards the vested former coach due to his Tattoogate departure, dude has earned the right to say whatever he wants as we chisel his likeness into the Ohio State version of Mount Rushmore.

I know that for some of the more sensitive whipper-snappers in Buckeye Nation, this might feel like the bully kicking sand in the face of the nerd after humiliating him in front of the whole school on field day in an ‘80s movie you watched on TBS at 2 a.m. After all, dating back to Jim Tressel’s first season as Ohio State head coach in 2001, the Buckeyes have a 15-2 record against Michigan (and don’t come at me with that 2010 vacated garbage), and they’ve have won two national titles, while Michigan... hasn’t.

So, despite the intensity of the rivalry– and the extreme make-funability of Jim Harbaugh— I can understand why some of the more gentle-hearted souls in the OSU community might feel like Tressel is simply piling on the hapless Wolverines with his continued homer trollings. However, as someone who went to OSU during both the John Cooper and Tressel regimes, let me remind just how different it was in 13 year years that Cooper was in charge in Columbus.

From 1988 to 2000, Ohio State was 2-10-1 against Michigan, including four Buckeye losses in a five-year span in which they were ranked in the top-10 coming into The Game. This, of course, includes 1995 and 1996 in which OSU entered the rivalry game as the second-ranked team in the country in back-to-back years.

Cooper was an incredible recruiter; the talent that came out of Columbus during the time that he was at the helm rejuvenated the program, but he wasn’t a great Xs and Ox coach, and got out-schemed by Lloyd Carr year in and year out despite regular talent advantages.

So, on January 18, 2001, when in front of a sold-out basketball crowd at The Schott, Tressel said, “I can assure you that you will be proud of your young people in the classroom, in the community, and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan,” the new coach became a fan-favorite.

And then when his team went and delivered that November, a legend was born, and Ohio State has dominated the rivalry and Big Ten ever since. So, in my opinion, Tress earned the right to say whatever he darn (you know he doesn’t use profanity stronger than “darn”) well pleases.

So, Jim Tressel, consider this your formal permission to say whatever you want regarding That Team Up North. Remind them that they have never finished better than third in the B1G East under Harbaugh, make fun of their coach’s obsession with milk and khakis, feel free to make fun of random UM fans’ golf games, whatever you want; the trolling world is your oyster.

“Pandel Savic, who went from playing quarterback at Ohio State to running the Memorial Tournament for Jack Nicklaus, died Tuesday in Columbus.”

-Rob Oller, The columbus Dispatch

While Pandel Savic is not remembered in the pantheon of great Ohio State quarterbacks with the likes of Les Horvath, Rex Kern, Art Schlichter, and Troy Smith, his importance to the program, and to the Columbus sports’ scene at large, is undeniable.

After being born in Macedonia before immigrating to the US, serving as a Marine in World War II, beating Cal in Ohio State’s first trip to the Rose Bowl, and then helping Jack Nicklaus build Murfield Village and found the Memorial Tournament, Savic died on Tuesday at the age of 92.

Following a 7-7 tie against Michigan in 1949, thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown pass, Savic led the Buckeyes to a 17-14 win over California in Pasadena. A three-time letter-winner, he was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

A long-time friend and neighbor of Nicklaus’, the idea to bring a PGA Tour event to Columbus was formed in Savic’s kitchen in the late ‘60s. Then, 11 years later when the Memorial Tournament began, Savic would become its chairman. The former Buckeye QB accompanied Nicklaus to Augusta, Ga. for the Masters for 36 years.

So, whether it was on the gridiron or the links, Savic is part of two of Columbus’ most lasting legacies. Godspeed.

“The University of Toledo’s trip to Ohio State for a 2022 football game will come with a hefty payday.”

-Nicholas Piotrowicz, The The Blade

So, it looks like Ohio State is going to be forking over $1.8 million for the honor of hosting the Toledo Rockets in 2022. Now, given the rate of inflation, perhaps that total won’t be as staggering in four years’ time, but by today’s standards, it’s a hefty sum. So hefty in fact, that if that same total was spread out to the 1,038 Ohio State student-athletes, they would each get $1,734.10.

Now, I understand the need to incentivize mid-majors to accept their role as cupcakes for larger programs, and I even understand the arguments against paying players. However, when the numbers being tossed around are this exorbitant, it is hard to justify the profiteering universities are engaging in at the expense of their athletes.

At least we’ve got LeBron on the case.

The NCAA approved changes to the DI transfer rule and football red-shirt restrictions

usa_today_10785228.0.jpg

Well, it’s a start.

The NCAA made some announcements on Wednesday about a few rule changes that will affect all DI athletics this fall including for the 2018 college football season. For the most part, they are welcome additions, including eliminating the need to get permission to transfer to a new school, and new rules for football players to claim a red-shirt season.

“Beginning in October, Division I student-athletes will have the ability to transfer to a different school and receive a scholarship without asking their current school for permission.” — NCAA

The Division I counsel agreed this week to allow students to transfer without having to get their current school’s permission. It’s important to note here that even though the NCAA is doing away with that provision, conferences still set their own requirements with regard to permission and the Big Ten could still require players to obtain it.

The new system, which will go into effect in October, requires the student looking to transfer to notify their current school and register into a national transfer database within two business days of their decision.

“This creates a safe place for student-athletes to have a conversation with their coaches and makes the whole process more transparent,” Nicholas Clark of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on the Council said. “This will clean the process up and give more influence and flexibility to the student-athlete.”

In order to prevent schools tampering with potential transfers, the NCAA also upgraded tampering to the list of potential Level 2 violations, which is considered a “significant breach of conduct.”

“College athletes competing in Division I football can participate in up to four games in a season without using a season of competition, the Division I Council decided this week at its meeting in Indianapolis.” — NCAA

After initially being discussed at meetings in April, there were still concerns over exactly how many games and how much playing time would qualify under the new red shirt-rule for college football players. Now, players who have seen action in up to four games will still be eligible to claim a red-shirt versus losing out on a full year of eligibility.

One stipulation mandated since then is specifying that mid-year enrollees who participate in the postseason either “before or during the student-athlete’s first term at a school” are not eligible for this exception.

“This change promotes not only fairness for college athletes, but also their health and well-being. Redshirt football student-athletes are more likely to remain engaged with the team, and starters will be less likely to feel pressure to play through injuries,” Council chair Blake James, athletics director at Miami (Florida) said. “Coaches will appreciate the additional flexibility and ability to give younger players an opportunity to participate in limited competition.”

This is the first step for the NCAA to roll out new regulations for red-shirt opportunities and eligibility requirements for other sports as well.

6_7570131.0.jpeg

It was an important day for Buckeye recruiting.

It’s camp season in college football, which means that teams all over the country are either hosting or traveling to camps to check out prospective recruits. It’s an important part of the recruiting cycle, as coaches get a better idea of future targets worth recruiting. It also helps determine if current class recruits are “takes” or not. More often than not, at least one or two recruits in any class will be the result of a camp offer. Sometimes it’s because a specific coach saw something they really liked, sometimes it’s because the player answered a question the whole staff had, and sometimes it’s just because they showcased an impressive amount of athleticism and skill.

We’ve seen this plenty at Ohio State under Urban Meyer. Since 2013, guys like Darron Lee, Malik Hooker, Brady Taylor, Stephen Collier, Rashod Berry, Damon Arnette, Jahsen Wint, Malik Harrison, Elijah Gardiner, Marcus Hooker and Alex Williams are just some that earned offers from Ohio State after an impressive camp. It’s a valuable tool for coaches to identify hidden gems, and look for raw athletic potential.

Obviously it’s not a perfect science, and football is played in pads, not shorts and t-shirts, but seeing recruits play without pads or hitting can tell coaches a lot that film can’t. Yesterday, Ohio State hosted one of what will be many camps this summer. Quite a bit of top talent was in attendance, including quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, athlete Craig Young, and tight end Brenton Strange among others.

There was quite a bit of social media buzz yesterday about each recruit I mentioned, and we’ll take a look at some of that buzz, as well as what each of those guys offers as a player.

Tyler Van Dyke

Tyler Van Dyke was a bit of a surprise at the camp, because he wasn’t on many attendee lists heading up to yesterday. The 6-foot-4, 212-pound 2020 signal caller made his presence known very quickly.

Best QB at Ohio State today? By a wide margin it was 2020 prospect Tyler Van Dyke (@Tyler_Van_Dyke) from @SuffieldAcademy in Connecticut.

— Jeremy Birmingham (@Birm) June 12, 2018

Van Dyke, a Connecticut product, isn’t new to impressing at camps. He was at a Michigan camp just a few days ago, and lit up a West Virginia camp before that. Van Dyke isn’t yet ranked by 247Sports, but he seems to be headed towards the top of the class very quickly. He holds six offers, from Boston College, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rutgers and Syracuse, as well as interest from most of the ACC and Big Ten.

I think an Ohio State offer will be coming sooner rather than later, and Van Dyke can be considered one of their top quarterback targets in 2020, along with Jack Miller and Harrison Bailey.

Craig Young

Craig Young generated more hype than any other recruit in attendance today. The Fort Wayne product showed off his excellent athleticism at just about every position on the field, and despite being listed at receiver, he’s established himself as a defensive recruit to Ohio State.

According to reports from Letterman Row and Land of 10, Young didn’t just garner hype around his recruitment, he nearly ended it. Young had been waiting to get the green light from Ohio State’s staff to commit for months now, and all things indicate that he did get that green light today, after impressing the staff so thoroughly.

He plans to announce his college decision in the coming days, likely after talking to his family. At this point, I’d be shocked if Young doesn’t commit to Ohio State, and at this point, it’s likely just ironing out formalities.

At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Young doesn’t have a true position yet, but linebacker or safety seems like a solid prediction. He has the athleticism and skill to succeed at either, and ultimately, it’ll just come down to where Bill Davis and Greg Schiano prefer him.

Brenton Strange

It’s fair to say that tight end isn’t a huge need for Ohio State in the 2019 class. For several months now, it’s looked like they have little to no interest in any tight end for the class, and it was widely considered that they may just not take one in 2019. That may have changed yesterday.

West Virginia tight end Brenton Strange was in attendance, and impressed enough to pick up an offer from the Buckeyes.

Blessed to receive my 13th offer from the Ohio State University!! @OSUCoachKDub pic.twitter.com/AxL4e0GXhz

— Brenton Strange (@BrentonStrange) June 12, 2018

Strange, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound receiving specialist isn’t very well known in the recruiting world. He’s ranked No. 992 by 247Sports, and holds just 13 total offers. Those offers include Maryland, North Carolina, Purdue, Rutgers and Wake Forest, as well as some G5 and FCS schools. However, he’s an impressive athlete, with great hands and a ton of speed.

That was on full display at the camp, and Kevin Wilson saw enough to convince him that Strange may be the best option at tight end in this class. It’s not entirely clear if Strange’s offer is commitable, but if it is, he could be a member of the class very soon.
