KBD gets two fully-guaranteed seasons on his three-year contract.

Last night, in the first game of his professional career, former Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop scored nine points and collected seven rebounds in 31 minutes of action for the Minnesota TimberwolvesLas Vegas Summer League team. Today, it was announced that he had signed his three-year, rookie contract with the NBA team. While the Timberwolves confirmed the signing, they declined to comment on the terms.

Despite being unanimously projected to be a first-round pick, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year fell to the second half of the second round in last month’s NBA Draft, meaning that the deal that he just signed is likely far less than many anticipated that it would be.

Other than the length, the deal’s specifics have not been announced, however, the first two seasons are fully guaranteed according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

Keita Bates-Diop signed his contract with Wolves today. League sources tell @TheAthletic the 2nd RD pick gets a 3-year deal, with the first 2 fully guaranteed

— Jon Krawczynski (@JonKrawczynski) July 7, 2018

John Meyer from SBNation’s Canis Hoopus speculates that the T-wolves will use part of their Mid-Level Exception on the deal, and that the first year could come in at the rookie minimum of $838,464.

Meyer also explains, “By using a portion of the Mid-Level Exception, the Wolves will have full Bird Rights at the end of the contract when KBD hits restricted free agency.”

Whatever KBD signed for, congratulations to him. When you get back to Minnesota, might we suggest The Eater’s “38 Essential Twin Cities Restaurants, Spring 2018”?

Another top lineman is headed to Ohio State.

Several 2020 recruits have talked about a certain buzz around Ohio State over the past few weeks. There’s a feeling among commits and targets that something special might be unfolding in this class for the Buckeyes. It seems like every day that buzz is becoming more prominent, as the sense grows that a legendary class is being built. The Buckeyes took another big step in that direction today, as Luke Wypler joined the class.

Wypler is yet another massive commitment in a class full of big names, with even bigger personalities. The St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, NJ) High School product is one of the country’s best linemen, and he’s been a major Buckeye target for a while now. They offered back in March, hosted Luke in early June, and are extremely excited to have him in the class.

Now, Luke isn’t just a big-time, four-star recruit that Ohio State is bringing in because of his ranking. After watching him extensively, Ohio State identified Wypler as one of the best players in the country, not just one of the top guards. Let’s take a look at what the Buckeyes saw in him, and what you can expect to see when he gets to Columbus.

On the field

The first thing that stands out about Wypler is how big he is. Now, when it comes to linemen, being “big” can mean two things. There are physically imposing, massive maulers, that dominant by being “bigger” than everyone else and erase defenders by being “bigger” than them. The other kind of big is someone who, while obviously very large, isn’t out of shape in any way. They never look sluggish, and are more “big” in the weight room mold than they are massive bodies to block the way.

Wypler is the latter, and that’s exactly how Ohio State likes it. Ohio State doesn’t recruit maulers very often, because Urban Meyer wants his linemen to be able to move well, and it’s very difficult for 6-foot-8, 360 pound tackles to do that. Ohio State wants their linemen between 6-foot-2 and 6-foot-7, while hovering right under 300 pounds. Wypler fits the mold perfectly.

While he plays tackle in high school, he’ll be a guard at the next level. It shouldn’t be a tough move for him, because his greatest skill is his agility. He’s got great footwork, and has no trouble making blocks downfield, either off of a pull-block or just as an adjustment after the initial block.

His quickness is complimented well by a ton of strength. Wypler is a big hitter, and has a tendency to completely take defenders out of rushing plays. His strong arms paired with his constantly churning legs make him a fantastic run blocker, and that’ll be his primary focus in Columbus.

That isn’t to say that he’s not a capable pass blocker as well, because he definitely is. His team passes more than most high schools, and because of that, he has plenty of experience dropping back and absorbing contact, rather than initiating it like he would on a run block. His time spent at tackle will help him a ton in pass protection at the next level, though he may need to get a bit bigger to block big nose-tackles consistently. That’s where Ohio State’s strength program comes in. Wypler being only 16 years old means that he has plenty of growing left to do, and I have no concerns about him not being strong enough.

My only real concerns are with his balance and focus. He plays a bit too high at times, and while he’s able to get away with it in high school, that’ll get him knocked over at the next level. He has to work on his pad level, and that’ll be a big focus for OSU’s offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. The focus issue stems almost entirely from the fact that Wypler is a young athlete. He can get caught up in a big block at times, wanting to make the highlight rather than moving on to another assignment.

Basically, that means that in an effort to drive someone 20 yards out of the play, Wypler is also taking himself out of the play. It’s great to see that effort, but Ohio State would prefer him to take care of his assignment quickly so that he can start blocking downfield on running plays, or help another linemen on passing plays. Running a guy out of the play is good, but knocking your assignment over and being able to move on and block a linebacker to open up the second level is better. He’ll get there.

In the class

Wypler is the fifth member of Ohio State’s 2020 class. He’s the third lineman, along with Paris Johnson Jr. and Jake Wray. Those two will likely end up as the tackles in this class, while Wypler will be one of two or three interior linemen. I don’t think Ohio State wants a full five linemen in 2020 (they don’t need to take a full group in both 2019 and 2020), so Wypler may be the penultimate member of the line class. My guess is that Michigan guard Justin Rogers finishes the class up front.

Wypler committed to Ohio State over 22 other offers, from Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford, Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others. The primary competition here was from Stanford, though Notre Dame was in the mix for a while as well. Wypler is a very smart kid, and the academics of Stanford really intrigued him.

Ultimately however, Ohio State’s combination of on-the-field success, academics, and location sealed the deal for Wypler. As it has been in so many recruitments, Ohio State’s “Real Life Wednesdays” program may have been the biggest factor here. People underestimate how much the program matters, but it really is a huge part of Ohio State’s recruiting success.

Wypler is yet another big step towards what could be Urban Meyer’s best recruiting class; not just at Ohio State, but of his entire career. The targets left in 2020, and the leadership already committed to Ohio State, could make for a historic class. It’s a good time to be a Buckeye.

You can watch Luke’s highlights below, and read his commitment piece here.

The Buckeyes are off to another BOOOOMing weekend.

The 2020 class is off to an extremely hot start at Ohio State. With more than a year to go before any of these recruits are able to officially sign, the Buckeyes had already landed a top quarterback in Jack Miller, two linemen in Jake Wray and Paris Johnson Jr, and a four-star safety in Lejond Cavazos.

Today, they added yet another commit, as four-star guard Luke Wypler announced his pledge to the Buckeyes.

COMMITTED TO THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!! #Gobucks #THEOHIOST pic.twitter.com/yawNeZAKmY

— Wypler (@LukeWypler) July 7, 2018

Wypler joins what many think could be the best class in America by the time that Signing Day rolls around in February of 2020. He’s the first guard in the class, as Wray and Johnson both spend most of their time outside, and will likely remain as tackles at Ohio State. At 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, Wypler is the ideal size for a college guard, and has the experience and athleticism to make him one of the most highly touted interior linemen in the class of 2020.

Wypler, a Montvale, NJ native, comes to Ohio State via St. Joseph Regional High School. He currently sits at 75th in the national 247Sports composite rankings, and third among all other guards. His commitment doesn’t move Ohio State above Miami for the top spot in the 247Sports team rankings yet, but he does put them quite a bit closer. With three fewer commits than the Hurricanes, Ohio State is just 40 composite points off of the lead, which could be made up with just one or two big commitments.

Wypler also held offers from Penn State, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Stanford, Notre Dame, Florida, Ole Miss, and many others.

Land Grant Holy-Land will have more on this commitment soon. You can view Wypler’s highlights below.

it's always a good start to your college career by trolling your own future fanbase the day before you commit. knowing nothing else about this guy, my guess is he's going to be a handful.

I’ve never been a particularly big fan of person referring to his or herself in the third person; imo it’s always presented a pronounced hubris and while I recognize his talent I’m fine with being spared whatever issue that’s likely to cause.

Plus, Damon Arnette lands on Top 10 DBs to watch list in 2018.

“The NBA’s 2018 Las Vegas Summer League is set to begin on July 6, just two weeks after the draft, and it’s time to see who will make a Kyle Kuzma-esque impression and steal the show.”

-Matt Ellentuck, SB Nation

Even though there’s over a month before Ohio State is back in session and before sports are back in action, there’s still something to occupy your July: the NBA Summer League. Four former Buckeyes will get their first taste of playing in the pros with a run in the Las Vegas league.

Here’s a look at how to catch some of your favorite Buckeyes over the next few weeks, with the first set of games getting underway tonight.

Byron Mullens (Orlando Magic) @ 5:00 p.m. ET: Nets vs. Magic, NBA TV

Mullens hasn’t worn an Ohio State jersey since the 2008-09 season, and has been trying to find a landing spot in the NBA ever since — that’s nearly a decade! He spent five years playing for teams like OKC and Charlotte, before taking his talents overseas.

He’s bounced around European league’s since 2014, and most recently signed — for the second time — with the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the NBA G League.

Trevor Thompson (Brooklyn Nets) @ 5:00 p.m. ET: Nets vs. Magic, NBA TV

Thompson went undrafted in 2017 and spent time on the 2017 NBA Summer League roster for the Boston Celtics before ultimately landing with the Santa Cruz Warriors of the G League.

He finished his first season with playing time in 38 games (earning two starts) and averaged 11.7 minutes per game. Overall he went 67 of 128 field goal attempts, and a pretty solid 51 of 68 free throws on the year. Thompson also claimed 113 defensive rebounds, 23 blocks, 20 assists and 18 steals — in addition to his 34 turnovers.

Shannon Scott (Charlotte Hornets) @ 5:30 p.m. ET: Thunder vs. Hornets, ESPNU (WatchESPN)

After going undrafted in 2015, Scott bounced around from Summer League to G League teams, and was once again invited to participate in the summer slate this year, this time by the Charlotte Hornets.

He’s been a starter for most of his two seasons in the G League, first with the Raptors 905 and then with the Long Island Nets. In March 2016, Scott was responsible for the first triple-double in Rapotors 905’s history, thanks to a performance that included 24 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.

Keita Bates-Diop (Minnesota Timberwolves) @ 11:00 p.m. ET: Nuggets vs. Timberwolves, NBA TV

The first Buckeye basketball player to be drafted since 2015, KBD is ready to prove that he should have been a first-round pick. After falling to No. 48 in the NBA Draft last month, the Timberwolves have wasted no time in getting the big man some work, and are expecting him to develop during the Summer League series.

So, while we have a bit before we’re back to covering ourselves in Scarlet and Gray, we can still cheer for some Buckeyes in the meantime.

“If you are an NFL team looking for a help on the back end, chances are that you have spent substantial time watching Ohio State defensive tape over the last few years. The Buckeyes have reloaded in this area with yet another enticing pro prospect.”

-Lance Zierlein on Damon Arnette, NFL.com

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com ranked the Top 10 DBs to watch heading into the 2018 season, and to the surprise of no one, a Buckeye made the list. At this point, it’s no surprise that NFL teams would be keeping a close eye on defensive backs coming out of Ohio State — especially during the Urban Meyer era under now-former assistant coach Kerry Coombs.

While Coombs may now be coaching in the NFL, the pipeline he created from OSU to the pros has yet to simmer down. Arnette looks to be the next guy to keep the #DBU tradition alive (not to mention Kendall Sheffield has a chance at doing the same) and could be another first round draft pick out of OSU.

Zierlein’s scouting report continues, “Arnette is bigger and stronger than his 2017 teammate Denzel Ward, but he lacks Ward’s foot quickness and long speed (most cornerbacks do). Where Arnette shines: his physical play from press coverage and his ability to disrupt the early stages of a route.”

With one more season to go, Arnette will have all eyes on him as games get underway, and will be looking to boost his profile with more NFL scouts paying attention.

“Ohio State director of golf Therese Hession will represent the United States and the Buckeye golf programs when she helps lead the United States team at the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup this weekend in Évian-les-Bains, France.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Alongside Ryan Hybl of Oklahoma, Hession will coach the American team during the Ryder Cup-style event. Teeing off at Evian Resort Golf Club, this is the first time the competition field will include men’s and women’s collegiate golfers.

The golfers are in good hands under Hession, who has led the Buckeyes for 27 seasons, claiming 10 Big Ten titles, 17 NCAA Championships appearances and 25 NCAA Regionals. She’s been named Big Ten Coach of the Year an incredible seven times and National Coach of the Year twice (1997 by the NGCA; 2014 by Golfweek).

“I am honored and privileged to help lead the U.S. Squad at the 2018 Palmer Cup in France,” Hession said. “The matches should be extremely competitive featuring the best men and women in collegiate golf.”

The Ohio State director was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015, and most recently, she led the Buckeyes to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2017.

Hession has a few more reasons to be excited heading into the weekend, with news that four members of the Ohio State women’s golf team were named 2017-18 All-American Scholars by the WGCA. Carrying a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50, Jaclyn Lee, Alanis Sakuma, Adeena Shears, and Rio Watanabe earned the honor, with Lee claiming her third and Watanabe her second WGCA recognition.

Buckeye Bits from the NFL

On Noah Brown and the WR competition in Dallas — Ryan Ratty, Blogging The Boys

“Brown may have a slight advantage given his experience from last year, but his limitations are more due to lack of breakaway speed and suspect route-running. At the age of just 21-years-old, Brown has so far been mainly a blocking WR, but that is a very important position for the Cowboys.”
On John Simon and the LB position for the Colts — Brett Mock, Stampede Blue

“It would also be particularly aided by the coaching staff allowing John Simon to move on from a very difficult transition to defensive end, one where he is outclassed by a number of players on the roster already, and back to a strong side role.”
On how Billy Price and Sam Hubbard improve the Bengals’ roster — John Sheeran, Cincy Jungle

Billy Price doesn’t have to be the second coming of Nick Mangold to be considered an upgrade over Russell Bodine. The praise the coaches had for Price mostly pertained to the intangibles he possesses and the personality that make Price who he is as a student of the game and leader in the locker room.”
On if the Cowboys should sign Johnathan Hankins — Connor Livesay, Blogging The Boys

“Hankins was a constant thorn in the Dallas offense’s side with his domination against the run. Hankins is known for being one of the best run-stuffing defensive tackles in the league using his massive frame and brutal strength to win at the point of attack, and take up space to allow other defensive players to flourish.”

O-H!@denzelward pic.twitter.com/kT6TqXQfvl

— Cleveland Browns (@Browns) July 6, 2018

Interesting dynamics with Browns 1st round picks. 4th pick Denzel Ward has no incentive to sign before 1st pick Baker Mayfield. If Mayfield gets guarantees without offsets, Ward will likely feel he should get the same. 2017 1st overall pick by Browns Myles Garrett has offsets.
