We discuss that, and more.

The Big Ten has sent a team to the playoff both years we’ve had one, and with Michigan getting a ton of preseason love, Ohio State set to promote a zillion four and five stars, and with Michigan State fueled by white hot DISRESPECKT and Malik McDowell, there are multiple candidates to get the conference a playoff bid for the third year in a row.

But all three of those teams, along with other would-be Big Ten contenders, have significant questions about their roster. Is it possible that this is the year the elite of the Big Ten beat each other up a little bit, and keep the conference out of the playoff? Could the ACC be the first conference to get two teams in the Final Four of college football?

It’s a possibly, and one worth exploring, so Colton Denning and I broke it down in our latest podcast. Other topics in this episode include:

  • A quick rundown of the latest in Ohio State, and Michigan, recruiting news (SPOILER: It’s good for Ohio State).
  • Is Michigan a legitimate Big Ten championship contender this season?
  • Who is going to win the Big Ten West?
  • Our predicted order of finish for each division
  • And much more!

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

Whoa is Michigan:

The past few days have not been kind to the Wolverines. First they lost a 2018 commitment and Buckeye legacy Leonard Taylor who decided to decommit on Monday. Taylor has made multiple visits to Ohio State since his commitment, and it seems like the Buckeyes would be a legitimate landing spot for him.

pic.twitter.com/1UgzgFkCIa

— Leonard Taylor (@Lenny_T_20) August 22, 2016

The news only got worse when 4-star defensive tackle Aubrey Soloman out of Georgia announced that he was also decommitting from the program. His story is interesting because he says he received a thank you note from the coaching staff of the Wolverines for attending the BBQ they held, when in fact he did not attend. They also spelled his name wrong on the thank you note, which makes you wonder who is going to get fired for this offense? This comes a few days after a promotional flyer was put out by the Wolverines marketing staff, that had the likes of Ryan Shazier as a former Michigan Wolverine. That post by the Wolverines has since been taken down, as it was realized that there were a lot more non-Wolverines on that poster. In a day and age when social media is so important to recruiting and bonding with these athletes, you would think that a school with such prominence would put a little more effort into making sure that things were done with 100% accuracy.

Buckeye 5-star Target Sets 1st Official Visit

Probably the highest rated guy left on Ohio State’s recruiting board is 5-star safety Jeffrey Okudah out of Texas. Okudah has listed the Buckeyes at the top of his list for quite a while now, but lately the Oklahoma Sooners have begun to make a push for his services. Okudah took to Twitter Sunday to announce his first official visit.

First OV has been set, Ohio State vs Oklahoma on 9/17! #BoomerSooner

— Jeffrey Okudah III (@TheJeffOkudah) August 22, 2016

He will be in attendance when the Buckeyes make their way to Norman on September 17th to see quite possibly his top 2 schools in action. It will be a good chance for him to see not only the Sooners but the Buckeyes as well. Although he will not have an opportunity to interact with the Buckeye coaching staff, he will get to see how well Buckeye nation travels for games, and what the Buckeye brand is all about.

Okudah is expected to make an official visit to Ohio State as well sometime this fall, and when that happens expect the full red-carpet treatment to be rolled out, as he is one the Buckeyes really covet on the defensive side of the ball.

2019 Athlete Receives Buckeye Offer:

Blessed to receive my first offer from THE Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/AOK9hwl0Qq

— Jaylin Simpson (@jaylinsimp) August 22, 2016

The Buckeyes reached out on Monday to offer 2019 defensive back Jaylin Simpson out of Georgia. The Buckeye offer was the first offer he had received, and he was excited by the offer as Urban Meyer delivered it personally over the phone. The offer came as the Buckeyes had already offered his teammate Jashawn Sheffield a 2019 wide receiver, and noticed Simpson on the same tape.

The Buckeyes are still wrapping up an impressive 2017 class, and the 2018 class is getting underway, but 2019 is just around the corner, and the Buckeyes are getting a jump start on that class as well.

Georgia Pipeline?:

The Buckeyes have done well in Georgia over the past few years, and they continue to mine the state for talent for upcoming recruiting classes. Christian Tutt, a 4-star defensive back, hails from Georgia and recently released his top 11, of which the Buckeyes made the cut.

Thomson's Christian Tutt has a top 11: OSU, UGA, Bama, USC, UCLA, UF, A&M, FSU, Miami, ND, & Clemson
(@cblacks500) pic.twitter.com/JA4BdrubA2

— Matt Zahn (@mattzahnsports) August 22, 2016

Tutt visited the Buckeyes back in April, and Coach Kerry Coombs made a follow-up visit shortly thereafter in May. Tutt lists 33 offers to date, and it should be a battle for the Buckeyes to land him as his top 11 is filled with all quality football programs. His crystal ball predictions have him headed to Georgia at 83%, with Clemson at 17%. Tutt will make his decision on May 30th of next year, which will celebrate his brothers birthday.

Brothers Influence too Much?:

Long-time Buckeye commit Jerron Cage has decided to take an official visit to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this fall. His brother Daniel currently plays for the Irish. Cage is a 4-star defensive tackle recruit and currently joins Haskell Garrett as the two defensive tackle commitments for the class of 2017.

If Cage decides to flip his commitment, it might make it easier for the Buckeyes to go after Jay Tufele out of Utah. This is one to keep an eye on for sure.

The Buckeye basketball program is looking to make some noise in 2018

With the football program making a whole lot of noise yesterday, the recruiting news on Tuesday seemed to shift to the basketball program when the Buckeyes offered in-state prospect Justin Ahrens (Versailles, OH /Versailles).

I'm blessed to say I've received an offer from The Ohio State University. #GOBUCKS ⚪pic.twitter.com/sB9XoyY3rY

— Justin Ahrens (@ahrensjustin12) August 23, 2016

Ahrens, a small forward in the class of 2018, stands about 6-foot-5 and is rated as the No.4 player in the state. Ahrens was on an unofficial visit to the school when Thad Matta decided to throw an offer his way. In recent years, Ohio State has gone away from bringing in top in-state prospects and while the product on the court has still been OK the last couple years, it is definitely down from what we're used to seeing from Thad Matta's squads. It's been rumored that Matta and his staff want to get back to putting a bigger emphasis on recruiting the state of Ohio. This was Ahrens' second offer, with Stony Brook taking the honors as the first to offer the Versailles phenom. There is no current timetable on when he'll decide his destination.

Ahrens wasn't the only visiter in Columbus; he was also joined by 2018 shooting guard Robby Carmody (Mars, PA /Mars Area). Carmody is a top 60 player in the country and a unanimous four-star prospect. Ranked as the No.2 player in the state of Pennsylvania, Carmody holds 11 total offers, most notably from Notre Dame, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Michigan. He has not yet received an offer from Ohio State.

It's no question that the Bucks have a shot in this one, but there's definite ground to make up. Thad Matta will have his work cut out for him if he wants to pull the 6-foot-4 sharp-shooter out of Keystone State. Notre Dame and Pittsburgh are the presumed favorites right now, according to the 247sports crystal ball prediction

To the gridiron

A couple highly-touted recruits, both of whom are Ohio State running back targets received a boost when Rivals revealed their new rankings. Commit JK Dobbins (La Grange, TX /La Grange) moved up 28 spots to No.54 overall, while Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton) received his fifth star and is now rated the No.12 overall player in the country. Ohio State will have to fight all the way to the end in order to grab Akers from a slew of SEC schools who are also vying for his services.

— Mike Farrell (@rivalsmike) August 23, 2016

As it stands, the 247sports crystal ball predictions have Ole Miss as the biggest threat to Ohio State in regards to Akers. Adding more fuel to the recruiting fire is the offer from Alabama with Lane Kiffin listed as one of the recruiters, according to Akers’ page on 247sports.

MS RB Cam Akers is a new 5-star, up 15 spots to No. 12 #R100 LINK -- https://t.co/MOzVnCwGmf pic.twitter.com/tJUoXMU525

Stay tuned to Land-Grant Holy Land for all the updates on Akers and the Ohio State recruiting circuit.

LGHL Urban Meyer and J.T. Barrett ready to lead Ohio State to The Edge

With play just about to start, Meyer and Barrett are looking forward to the challenge of the upcoming season.

“There’s a certain standard at Ohio State. And it shouldn’t change for anybody. I don’t care how many people you lost.”

- J.T. Barrett via Jack McCluskey, The Ringer

Ohio State’s mantra for the 2016 season is “The Edge” and head coach Urban Meyer and quarterback J.T. Barrett know what it takes to push through that edge to the other side. After winning a national championship in 2014, the Buckeyes faltered a bit during “The Grind” of 2015 and now have the task of preparing one of the youngest teams that Meyer has had during his tenure in Columbus. But Ohio State was a young team in 2014, and as Meyer has said, if players break out in a similar way to many of the young players from two seasons ago, a run to the playoff is certainly possible.

With Barrett the unquestioned leader of the team, it’s no surprise that he’s not backing down from the expectations at Ohio State. Even with losing so many starters, the Buckeyes have an abundance of talent at nearly every position. From this point, it’s all about pushing beyond that edge for the young players looking to find that championship-level of play. Despite the inexperience across the roster, the Associated Press ranked the Buckeyes sixth in the country, so it’s not just Ohio State fans that have high expectations about the talent on this year’s roster.

“He's doing what we brought him here for. A cover linebacker, being fast out there. And he's also stopping the run.”

- Sheldon Richardson via Daniel Popper, New York Daily News

Former Buckeye linebacker Darron Lee is starting to make serious strides on the next level as training camp for the New York Jets continues. Teammates of Lee have begun singing their praises of the rookie linebacker. With the speed to be a very good cover linebacker and the aggressiveness to help with blitzing and run defense, Lee was a solid prospect coming into the NFL draft, which is why the Jets took him with the 20th pick of the first round.

There are still some growing pains, but it’s a learning process for Lee. The article mentions a time that Lee bit on a fake from quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brandon Marshall was quick to point it out. Since then, Lee has picked up more of the mental aspect of the game and has since played well in scrimmages and the like. In fact, in the practice mentioned in the article, Lee had intercepted two of Fitzpatrick’s passes that day.

“[Reese’s Senior Bowl 2017 Watch List] Pat Elflein, Center. Corey Smith, Wide Receiver.”

- Senior Bowl

Two members of Ohio State were featured on the latest watch list. This time, the Reese’s Senior Bowl 2017 was the list, with center Pat Elflein and wide receiver Corey Smith making appearances alongside a sizable list of college seniors. Elflein was a clear choice having 29 career starts and being made a First-Team All-Big Ten selection for the past two seasons. Smith has been quieter in his accolades but is still a solid receiver for the Buckeyes having played during the 2014 national championship run and even coming up with some big plays.

A sixth-year senior, Smith suffered a broken leg against Indiana in 2015 and earned an additional year of eligibility due to the injury. Now he returns to the Buckeyes with a chance to go out with a bang as one of the few veteran wide receivers on the team. Urban Meyer called Smith one of his favorite players on the roster last season when Smith went down with the injury, and with another shot at donning the scarlet and gray, expect some more big plays from the senior wideout.

The football team gets a midseason break. You deserve one too.

The Ohio State football season will be here before you know it, and even if you’ve only been paying semi-close attention this offseason, you’re probably aware of the major storylines with the program. This is going to be an exceptionally young, but talented and athletic team. There’s a lack of proven production at wideout, running back, and defensive back. They return the best QB in the conference, and should at least compete for a Big Ten title.

But you may not know a lot about the specific teams on Ohio State’s schedule. We’ll get into a lot more detail before the actual games, but you may want a primer so you can sound smart at the bar, or at the barbecue, or in the grocery store checkout line.

So take a look at Ohio State’s opponents this year. Next up, arguably the most welcome (given the grind of the football season) but also the one most prone to leave you feeling disheveled and unsure what to do with yourself: the boredom of the bye week.

Wait so Ohio State has a bye week after just 3 games? Is that ordinary?

An October bye — if your school didn’t play a game somewhere like Ireland or Australia, etc — is customary in terms of earlier weeks off. November feels more regular, at least in terms of what Ohio State faithful are acclimated to.

This year though, after probably the single hardest regular season game of the year, OSU will get a week off to avoid the grind of a gameweek, and accordingly so do you.

Just after football really gets going and I finally sell my roommate(s)/significant other on going all in each and every Saturday?!

It seems cruel yes, but the good news is the rest of the college football playing world rolls on, with or without the Bucks.

Clemson and Georgia Tech play Thursday, Sept. 22 on ESPN in one of the better Thursday night games of the year.

And there are a couple decent national offerings you can probably spend your Saturday enjoying a beverage or three while consuming:

-LSU at Auburn

-Penn State at Michigan

-Stanford at UCLA

-Washington at Arizona

-Wisconsin at Michigan State

At the time of publication, none of those game times or TV networks are set. You can bet LSU/Auburn will be a 3:30 kick at earliest (and more likely a primetime affair). The two Big Ten tilts mentioned seem probably to be afternoon or later action as well and the Pac-12 games always air late. That’s a nice little Saturday of football you don’t have an awful lot of stake in.

No, this is awful. Once that person in my life who doesn’t like me enjoying football finds out Ohio State’s not on, I’m going to have to go like five Lowe’s. Please help me.

You made your own bed there, friend. If your social contract doesn’t permit you to spend your free time doing things you (or hopefully you mutually) enjoy, the level of advice/consultation you necessitate well exceed the limitations of this Ohio State-centric operation.

The good news for you is that there are only 4 Lowe’s in the greater Columbus area. Their hours of operation on Saturdays are either 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. or 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. If you procrastinate your trips as late as humanly possible, there is a non-zero chance the location(s) you visit will be closed.

Godspeed.

I am a happy adult with tons of disposable income, spare time, and no children or an exhausted parent of one or more kids but with a really good babysitter and a desperate need for a lifeline. I would like to do something, anything out of the house that week. I’m begging you.

Good news! Columbus is a low-key pretty good live music city.

While Austin or Nashville it’s not, a fair share of great national acts make their way through town — and OSU’s bye week provides some pretty solid offerings.

Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the EXPRESS Live! formerly known as PromoWest/Lifestyle Pavilion, Beck (of the non-Tim variety) does his thing with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Beck’s last few albums have been fire, so you’d be well served to see him span his vast discography in person.

CD102.5 Fest is Saturday, Sept. 24 starting at 4, also at EXPRESS Live! The headline is CHVRCHES, aka one of the best acts out there right now. If the aforementioned football games aren’t your thing, this is a pretty strong fallback.

While those are the crème de la crème, there are a other shows of note that week as well:

-Ms. Lauryn Hill: Palace Theatre, Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. (FOREWARNING: Hill is notorious for showing up hours and hours late to her own shows, causing them to be abruptly cut short; buyer beware)

-Nada Surf: EXPRESS Live!, Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

I am aggressively uncultured and refuse to listen to, much less enjoy, live music to the point of self parody. What is there in this for me?

I’ll avoid telling you about Into The Woods at MadLab Sunday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of that week, but if you want to pay $27 ($18 on weekdays!) to escape from zombies with total strangers, “Infected 3” is an option Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

If you love to laugh, the great Jim Gaffigan is doing a two-night stay at Palace Theatre Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24.

The Scioto Audubon has a bird watching expo from Sept. 16-Sept. 18 or, if you’d rather eat animals than watch them, there’s a $55 Columbus Taco Truck Food Tour that might be up your alley.

Food? In September? But I’m starving now.

Fine. Be that way.

Sports. You all manipulated me into going to two Ohio State football games the first two weeks of the season and if I don’t get live sports in my life that bye weekend I’m going to turn into a murderous zombie for real.

Slow your roll. The CBJ have a preseason game Sunday, Sept. 25 — YEAH, YEAH; technically not still the bye week -- against the Blues that evening. Columbus Crew SC plays the same Sunday night against New England Revolution. At the time of this publication, the defending MLS Eastern Conference champs are a pipe dream to make the playoffs, but you never know.

What about movies? Do those still exist?

Apparently. “Bridget Jones’s Baby” drops the week prior but the early reviews are not promising (SORRY, FANS OF THE FIRST TWO). The surprise “Blair Witch” reboot will have been out a week as will the in-no-way-politically-contentious “Snowden”, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the titular role.

“The Magnificent Seven” remake and Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” both come out Friday, Sept. 23. Based on the trailers, seems like you could do worse?

You tweet too much about FIFA. I enjoy video games and would like you to beat me at it. Is that possible?

I thought you’d never ask.

FIFA 17 comes out on EA Access that Wednesday night, September 21, at 7 p.m. ET for Access subscribers (~$5 a month or $25 a year) on Xbox One (sorry, PS4 owners). The bad news is you only get 10 hours to try the game before its full release the following Tuesday but hey, that’s an entire college football Saturday, give or take.

Tweet me your XBL username if you decide to take the plunge and I will gladly dunk on you.
