Ohio State survives against Michigan State. Let's talk about it

Posted by Land-Grant Holy Land - For Ohio State fans on Saturday, November 19, 2016

The Ohio State Buckeyes gave everyone a scare on Saturday, as they were unable to pull away from the Michigan State Spartans right up until the end, ultimately winning by a 17-16 score.

Michigan State got off to a booming start, when Tyler O’Connor hit L.J. Scott with a 64-yard touchdown pass less than a minute into the game. It made a two play, 75-yard drive pretty painless for the Spartans, who were just 3-7 coming into Saturday afternoon’s game.

J.T. Barrett and the Ohio State offense had a promising answer, when J.T. Barrett was able to find Curtis Samuel for a 24-yard touchdown.

The second quarter was a pretty sloppy one. Both teams got field goals to start it off giving us a 10-10 game, but after that, we didn’t have a whole lot.

We saw a Michigan State drive that ended in an interception to Chris Worley, followed by a Mike Weber fumble. Ohio State received the ball with just under four minutes remaining in the first half, but after five plays, the Bucks didn’t utilize their timeouts, and opted to go into the half positioned on their own 26.

The third quarter wasn’t quite as sloppy, but perhaps just a tad boring. Outside of a four play, 69-yard drive by Ohio State capped off with a Mike Weber rushing touchdown, all drives resulted in punts. There was no question the conditions were affecting both teams.

The fourth quarter was when the anxiety started to kick in. The Buckeyes’ 17-10 lead was shortened, after L.J. Scott absolutely dominated the Buckeyes defense with a drive that was his.

No, really. The Spartans started with the ball with just over nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, and gave Scott the ball eight consecutive times, going 56 yards, and making it a 17-16 game. Scott started to run for the sideline, but as Mark Dantonio signaled for him to go back out, the Spartans were going for the lead.

Their two-point attempt was spoiled thanks to a Malik Hooker interception.

spartwo.0.gif

The Buckeyes couldn’t immediately seal the deal. After taking up just over two and a half minutes of game time, the Buckeyes gave the ball back to the Spartans.

The Ohio State defense, as it seems they always do, made a big play when they needed it, as Gareon Conley intercepted O’Connor on just the second play of their drive. It came after Tyquan Lewis ate him up for a 10-yard sack. This allowed the Bucks to run out the clock, and effectively end the game at 17-16.

Scott finished the game with 19 carries, accumulating 160 yards and one touchdown. He also had 76 yards receiving, and a touchdown.

The Ohio State ground game was prominent as well, with Mike Weber and J.T. Barrett combining for 216 yards. Weber became the third Ohio State freshman to rush for 1,000 yards, joining Robert Smith and Maurice Clarett as the only backs to do so. Curtis Samuel had 40 yards receiving and a touchdown for Urban Meyer’s squad.

Now, the Buckeyes will be looking forward to next week, as they look to keep their playoff hopes in tact with a win over Michigan.

Ohio State faces a Michigan State team that is having a rare down year, but that won’t mean that the Buckeyes won’t take them lightly. As I mentioned in the preview, Coach Meyer versus Coach Dantonio duel and they both play for keeps. They have won two games a piece and they are both sitting tied at 2-2 during their stay at their respective schools. This game will be another battle in the trenches as both teams look to get a win. Both the Buckeyes and the Spartans are locked-in and ready, but the weather could prove to be a hurdle for both teams. For now, during the pregame festivities, the snow did not come, but it could make an appearance later in the day during the game. Coach Meyer has a tendency to get uber conservative with playcalling if that happens. Hopefully, he can buck the trend and go for broke because TTUN comes into Columbus, so any momentum would be positive. The team as a whole needs to gain some confidence and momentum and if they have to run through the Spartans to gain it? Then so be it.

images-25.jpg
Well this is certainly not the start that Buckeye fans would like to see. A two-play drive that the Spartans effortlessly executed to go up 7-0 early in the game. They caught the defense off guard as they did the Wisconsin end around by R.J. Shelton that gained 11-yards and then they executed a well-timed double screen pass to earn the touchdown that went for 64-yards. Definitely, not a good start, but I will stay positive. The Buckeyes first drive ended in a sack and then a punt that pinned the Spartans on their 4-yard line. The Buckeyes stiffened up and forced a punt. This will be another heavyweight fight, another brawl until the bitter end. This looks to be a good one.

imgres-24.jpg
The Buckeyes started rolling as they were getting more settled in. The next drive was in the hands, or should I say the legs of J.T. Barrett. He noticed that the Spartans were spread too thin, trying to contain Zone 6 members, and he took the run every time they called that defensive play. To finish the drive, Barrett hit Samuel on a post route for 24-yards where he beat the double downfield. It is starting to heat up. The Silver Bullets forced another punt and Barrett goes back to work on another Quarterback run for another first down. Sadly, the Buckeyes ended up punting as well. When the second quarter started, Michigan State kicked a field goal and the Buckeyes chipped in one as well. The defenses are playing with the passion and fire that you would expect both teams to play with. On Michigan State’s next drive, Ohio State secured their 16th interception of this season. It goes to show that they are athletic at every level and a Linebacker in Chris Worley surely proved in once again. The play was sorely needed, but after the play ended, Jaylin Holmes was on the floor and was injured during the play. Hopefully, it isn’t a bad one, he is one of the emerging stars on this young Buckeyes Defensive Line and a key piece for Coach Johnson’s Rushmen package. On Ohio State’s possession, the Spartans forced only the second red zone turnover of the season. Of course, they do! I dread playing the Spartan’s because of games like these, but I will continue to stay positive. The Buckeyes forced a punt, but trouble almost hit as Samuel muffed the punt in the Buckeyes own 3-yard line. This game is surely filled with suspense and drama, and I am hoping for a score to ease my tensions a bit. At the half, it is 10-10 and the Buckeyes get the ball to start the second half.

imgres-3-7.jpg
The second half began with consecutive punts. Strong defensive play on both sides was evident as the struggle to hold the line rages on, but eventually, someone had to make a play. Someone had to break a big one. Mike Weber broke through for a 52-yard run that put him over 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Weber is the third Ohio State Freshman, at the Running Back position, who broke the 1,000-yard barrier and he joins Robert Smith and Maurice Clarett as the only ones to accomplish that task. Hopefully, Meyer continues to feed the beast. You would think that coach would emphasize the potential fake punt play. Well, he did not think they would go to that so early in the 4th, but it worked as a defender took it 25-yards for the first down. The moral victory was short lived though, as the Buckeyes forced a punt on 3rd and long by gathering their first sack of the game, courtesy of Sam Hubbard. Michigan State came right back at Ohio State as L.J. Scott racked up huge chunks of yardage before scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run. Coach Dantonio then decided to go for two, for their first lead in a while, but it failed and was intercepted by Erick Smith. The defense has been slacking, but the young Buckeyes make big plays during big moments, and this was needed. The defense ended the game in a big way, as Tyquan Lewis pressuered O’Connor on their last possession in the game and it forced him to underthrow the ball into the waiting arms of Gareon Conley for Ohio State’s 17th interception. This is why I love College Football. Although, we all wanted a blowout, I understand that we can’t win it all. The Spartans came to play today and they showed it. We will need to shore up the defense and play better as a team. There were a lot of overpursued plays and missed tackles. We are now entering the final week of the regular season, and you know what that means. I know that it is early and I will not start until we officially begin the week. So, for now, enjoy the hard earned win and Go Bucks!!!

The Buckeyes came out firing on all cylinders and ran the Blackbirds out of the gym on Saturday afternoon.

Kelsey Mitchell and Sierra Calhoun came to play on Saturday for the Ohio State women’s basketball team. The pair combined to score 43 points, including 35 in the first half, as the Buckeyes buried LIU Brooklyn 113-54 in Columbus.

Calhoun had her best game in an Ohio State uniform, scoring 22, grabbing four rebounds, and swiping four steals. Mitchell added 21 to go along with five assists, and Makayla Waterman, playing in the place of Stephanie Mavunga, set career-highs with 15 points and nine rebounds.

The scarlet and gray improved to 3-1 on the young season, and will now have to wait until Friday for their next game.

Ohio State started off strong, sprinting out to an 11-0 lead in the game’s first three minutes. Calhoun was absolutely unconscious, going 6-for-6 from the field in the first quarter, including 5-for-5 from three-point range, scoring 18 points as the Buckeyes outscored the Blackbirds 32-8.

LIU shot just 3-for-13 (23.1 percent) from the floor in the opening frame, while Ohio State was over 50 percent and made all six of its attempts from deep.

The onslaught continued in the second quarter as Mitchell got involved. The junior All-American scored 14 in the frame, finishing the half with 17. Ohio State forced 16 turnovers by the Blackbirds in the first half, and hit 10 of 15 three-point tries to stake itself to a 59-20 lead heading into the locker room.

The second half started out much as the first did, with the Buckeyes opening on a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the third quarter. This time it was Ohio State’s frontcourt doing the damage, as Shayla Cooper and Alexa Hart each scored four quick points.

Mitchell, Tori McCoy, Kiara Lewis, and Asia Doss scored four points apiece in the quarter as well, and LIU’s shooting woes continued (4-for-16), as the Buckeyes moved to the final 10 minutes with a commanding 89-36 lead.

The result of the game was a foregone conclusion by the time the fourth quarter came around, but Ohio State finished out strong. Waterman scored eight in the period, and Lewis, who finished with 12 for the game, had four.

McCoy notched double digits on the glass, grabbing 12 to go with nine points, and fellow freshman Jensen Caretti had nine rebounds of her own as the Buckeyes beat the Blackbirds on the boards, 58-30.

Next up for Ohio State is a trip to Estero, Florida for the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament. They tip off against Florida Gulf Coast the day after Thanksgiving at 5 p.m. ET

It’s on.

As advertised Friday evening on the ESPN family of networks and confirmed by College GameDay host Rece Davis Saturday morning during a snowy show in East Lansing, Kirk, Coach, and the crew will be headed to Columbus for what could be the biggest game of the year.

Starting at 7 a.m. ET Saturday morning, the GameDay crew will broadcast from on campus breaking down and covering all the angles of Jim Harbaugh’s first matchup against Ohio State since losing at home in his The Game debut, 42-13. The specific location has yet to be confirmed.

Even with the two teams trending in seemingly different directions, next Saturday could present as hard-fought and contested of a matchup as we’ve seen in the rivalry since 2013’s near Michigan upset scare. Jim Harbaugh’s never coached in Ohio Stadium as his alma mater’s head coach. With OSU still showing some vulnerabilities in the offensive line, an excellent Michigan defense will look to keep new quarterback John O’Korn and the offense in a position to come out with a win.

That 2017 class just got one step closer to being even more stacked.

The Ohio State Buckeyes already had one of the highest rated recruiting classes for 2017. Now, the Bucks are a tad bit closer to raising their .9550 recruiting score as five-star outside linebacker Baron Browning (Kennedale, TX / Kennedale) listed OSU as one of his final six schools fighting for his recruitment.

Making it known on Twitter, Browning put a graphic of the schools that still had a shot at signing the No. 2 OLB in the 2017 class.

Final 6.... pic.twitter.com/4mSb2An1Ma

— Baron Browning (@baronbrwnng) November 18, 2016

Ohio State will be battling UCLA, Alabama, Florida State, UCLA, Michigan and home state program TCU for the No. 9 overall player in the country. We’ll find out where Browning will choose to go to school in just 10 days, as he is listed as being on ‘commitment watch’ by 247sports.

November is becoming a big month for the Texan, as Texas HS Football named Browning the defensive player of the month earlier in the week.

Rutger gets Ohio State offer

No, Rutgers university isn’t being bought out by Ohio State – nor is Rutgers on official visit this week to Michigan. Rutger Reitmaier (Nashville, TN /Lipscomb Academy), however, has earned an offer to play at Ohio State.

The defensive tackle in the 2017 class is graded as a three-star prospect, and is ranked as the No. 23 DT in the nation. Currently, Reitmaier holds 20 offers, and the 247sports crystal ball prediction is split on whether the Nashville, Tenn. native will be going across the country to play for the defensive mind of Brady Hoke at Oregon, or playing his college football a lot closer nearby at SEC staple Tennessee.

While Ohio State isn’t in the front of the pack for Reitmaier, it does create another option. College football recruiting is a weird practice – so anything can happen. It would be cool though to have someone named Rutger, who plays at Ohio State and would have to face Rutgers four times in his college career...

LGHL Ohio State hockey shuts out Rensselaer, 4-0

Ohio State hockey shuts out Rensselaer, 4-0

Matt Tomkins recorded his first shutout of the year as the Buckeyes shut out the Engineers.

When you think of engineers and sports, you don’t get much farther than Paul Johnson and competitive League of Legends. But they apparently also play hockey and got boat raced by the Buckeyes last night at Rensselear, 4-0.

Matt Tomkins made his claim for the starting job in net for the Buckeyes, as he recorded his first shutout of the season and third of his career to help Ohio State improve to 7-1-4 on the year overall. Rensselear fell to 2-9-1 for 2016-17.

The Buckeyes put together a solid effort in the first period, outshooting the Engineers 13-8, but not really dominating as you’d think they should over an inferior opponent. OSU is ranked No. 14 and 13 in the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls respectively, after all.

Dakota Joshua finally asserted his team’s dominance at 18:58 of the first, however, for his second of the year. He hasn’t broke out like many of us expected, at least on the goal side, but any progress is good progress, and a game winning goal certainly helps. Miguel Fidler and Drew Brevig recorded the assists.

That’d be all Ohio State would need as Tomkins would shut the door for the rest of the game. Rensselaer upped their shot total to ten each in both the second and third, but still couldn’t find a way in.

Nick Schilkey made the task even harder for the Engineers as he doubled the lead at 7:15 of the second with a powerplay goal from Matthew Weis and David Gust. It was his 11th on the year. A two goal lead apparently wasn’t good enough for the captain, though, as he’d score almost exactly twenty minutes later, at 7:57 of the third. His twelfth of the year was assisted by Mason Jobst and Tanner Laczynski.

Laczynski would add an empty net goal, his fourth of the year, unassisted, at 19:44 of the third.

Ohio State, somewhat worryingly, went into a shell after the first period lead and only generated 15 total shots in the rest of the game. Tomkins was clearly on his game so it wasn’t a huge worry for this one, but going into the future, when you play the Minnesotas and Penn States of the world you cannot do that.

Rensselaer doesn’t have the talent to make you pay when you sit back and fall into a shell, but if you’re using these games for training for the Big Ten schedule, as you probably should be as that’s the most important part of your year by far, this was a distressing sign.

If you do this against a team like Minnesota, you’ll be back tied before you know it barring Dominik Hasek finding his way in net. Tomkins has been better but, goaltender, you’re no Dom Hasek.

Either way, Ohio State did what they needed to do against Rensselaer and it’s very hard to complain about that. When you play an inferior team, you’re supposed to win by multiple goals and Ohio State did that. They should have done that against Robert Morris and likely UConn and weren’t able to for the entire weekend series, but were able to on the first leg of this one.

We’ll see if they’ll be able to get both wins over that inferior opponent as the two teams face off once again on Saturday night at 7pm in Troy, New York.
