But it's not like Wolverines have been idle bystanders while being flogged by the Buckeyes all these years. In fact, Michigan has two whole victories in the past 15 seasons, in 2003 and 2011. The latter result was no huge surprise, given that the ...

Which Marvel heroes would J.T. Barrett, Curtis Samuel, and Malik Hooker be?

When it comes to the greatest rivalry in college sports, heroes and villains can be made in a single Saturday. For generations, The Game has created it’s share of good and bad guys, depending on which side of the Ohio-Michigan border you reside; be it Troy Smith, Desmond Howard, Braxton Miller, or Tim Biakabutuka. So, as we prepare for another epic clash of titans on Saturday, as No. 2 Ohio State hosts No. 3 Michigan, why don’t we break down the matchup from a more cinematic perspective, a Marvel cinematic perspective?

Since it is clear that in this blockbuster metaphor Ohio State is the good guys, since Stan Lee would never allow the bad guys to win 13 out of 15 times, let’s look at how some of Scarlet and Grey players might equate in more colorful superhero costumes.

Curtis Samuel is Iron Man

samuel.jpg

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

While not quite indestructible, H-back Curtis Samuel is the Tony Stark of Ohio State’s team. Full of bells and whistles, there’s nearly nothing that #4 can’t do. This season he has produced consistently on traditional handoffs, gadget plays, in the screen game, and on deep passes.

With 790 receiving yards, in addition to 650 on the ground, he could still become the first FBS player in history to reach 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in the same season, depending on how the post-season shapes up for the Buckeyes.

While the reliable hero is sometimes overlooked, either because of the trusty zone-read, or new, more trendy good guys, there is no doubt that when the going gets tough, you want Iron Man Curtis Samuel on your side.

JT Barrett is Captain America

jt.jpg

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

Unlike the flashier Iron Man, Captain America is a hero as much because of his honor and bravery as his super strength. Coming from a military family, quarterback J.T. Barrett is the perfect Ohio State equivalent for Steve Rogers. Though he doesn’t have the eye-popping skills of Samuels’ Iron Man, Barrett has the durability of at least 10 men.

The signal-caller has rushed the ball 164 times, the most for any quarterback in the Big Ten, and fourth nationally behind Navy’s Will Worth (243), Louisville’s Lamar Jackson (209), and Kent State’s Nick Holley (195). While the other three QBs’ totals are impressive, none of them play against the rough-and-tumble defenses that Barrett has faced in the Big Ten this season.

At times, including in his 24 carries against Michigan State, watching Barrett run the ball is reminiscent of a still puny Rogers standing up for himself against the bully; he accepted the punishment and kept coming back for more.

However, we also know that it is this courage and willingness to do what is necessary that has made Cap one of the most beloved figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and conversely, Barrett one of the most beloved QBs in Ohio State history.

Malik Hooker is Hawkeye

malik.jpg

Matthew O'Haren-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

Let’s be honest, very rarely do defensive players get the pub and adoration as their offensive counterparts, however, when the defender has five interceptions on the season and has returned two for touchdowns, he can be tough to ignore.

Thus is the case with Buckeye safety Malik Hooker. In his sophomore season, Hooker has been a reliable playmaker in the secondary for OSU, and no matter where he starts on the field, it feels like he has an innate ability to zero in on the place that he most needs to be.

While Hawkeye certainly doesn’t have the abilities of Captain America, or the toys of Iron Man, what he does have is the inhuman range and accuracy that makes him a force to be reckoned with no matter the opponent.

Mike Weber is Ant Man

mike.jpg

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

In his first 11 games on the field for Ohio State, Weber hasn’t made Buckeye fans forget about all-timers like Carlos Hyde and Ezekiel Elliott, but he has proven to be a valuable and entertaining addition to the OSU stable of heroes.

Listed at 5’10” and 212 lbs., having fought through a nasty shoulder injury in the latter part of the season, the running back has made it clear that there is a lot more strength and toughness than his otherwise diminutive frame would suggest. And, while fans might still be waiting for the breakaway speed to take him from hero to Avenger, it’s clear that he has the makings of a valuable member of the stable.

In his 2015 solo introduction, Paul Rudd showed more humor than we’ve seen from Weber thus far, but what was most fascinating about “Ant-Man” is that it eschewed the normal Marvel formula of climactic scene involving cities being destroyed and implied massive amounts of human casualties. Instead in “Ant-Man” it was literally done in miniature, as it was set in a child’s toy-room.

As of yet, we haven’t seen Weber bust the game-breaking runs that Hyde and Elliott became known for, but he has proven that he is capable of impacting the game in smaller, consistent chunks.

Raekwon McMillan is The Hulk

rae.jpg

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports | Marvel Studios

In the late 1970s to the early 80s, there has likely no more widely known Marvel hero than The Hulk, thanks to the Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno-led television series. However, since then, the not-so jolly green giant has been one of the most problematic properties for Marvel. In the past 13 years, the studio has introduced a new actor playing the character’s alter-ego, Dr. Bruce Banner, three different times; Eric Bana (2003), Edward Norton (2008), Mark Ruffalo (2012).

Despite the lack of respect that the character has endured in recent years, he has continued to be a vital part of the Avengers, providing both the brains and brawn that the team needs in its most difficult moments.

In Columbus, the once unanimous adoration that All-American linebacker Raekwon McMillan enjoyed has somewhat eroded this season. However, that lack of respect is clearly misplaced, as the MLB continues to be the emotional and play-making leader for the OSU defense. It also doesn’t hurt that at 6’2”, 243 lb. the junior is a physical beast.

Noah Brown is The Falcon

noah.jpg

Photo by Mike McGinnis/Getty Images | Marvel Studios

After breaking his leg in one of the last practices before the 2015 season, the excitement for a healthy Noah Brown at wide receiver reached a fevered pitch after his four-touchdown performance against Oklahoma. Unfortunately for Brown and Buckeye fans hoping for a potent passing game this season, he has pulled in only two touchdowns in the eight games since that legendary output in Norman.

Similarly, The Falcon is an underused and underappreciated member of the extended Avengers team. He’s shown up in four Marvel films, dating back to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but he rarely gets any love. He can fly, he boasts a pair of submachine guns, and he has a drone he controls from his wrist! What more do you want?

Memo to Marvel Studios and the Ohio State coaching staff: you have a potential game-changer in The Falcon/Noah Brown, don’t miss your chance to use him properly.

Demario McCall is Spider-Man

demario.jpg

Photo by Kirk Irwin/Getty Images | Marvel Studios

In limited duty this season, freshman Demario McCall has proven that he has the ability to be special. He is generously listed at 5’9” and 182 lbs., but he has shown himself capable of impressive feats that often defy physics.

Likewise, despite being young and undersized, especially compared to some of his Herculean compatriots, Spider-Man always makes the most of his opportunities. Granted, Marvel and Columbia Pictures have had more than their fair share of struggles getting the character established on screen since Tobey Maguire hung up his web-shooters in 2007.

However, based on his studio-crossover appearance in “Captain America: Civil War,” the more he is integrated into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, the better things will be for everyone. You got the hint Coaches Warinner and Beck?

So, what did we miss? What Marvel heroes would Gareon Conley, Marshawn Lattimore, and Dontre Wilson be? What Buckeyes would take the place of Thor, Daredevil, Luke Cage, or Doctor Strange? And, what villains would Jim Harbaugh, Jabrill Peppers, Jourdan Lewis, and Jake Butt be?

You can see the good guys host the bad guys on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET on ABC, as the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes take on the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines with a potential bid into the College Football Playoffs on the line.

The Buckeye offense comes out of hibernation for best win of the season.

After opening the season with three games that did little to inspire confidence from Buckeye Nation, Ohio State followed them up with three blowouts, against Western Carolina, Jackson State, and finally Marshall on Friday night. The Buckeyes moved to 6-0 on the young season with an impressive 111-70 win. The offensive total marked the first time that OSU surpassed the century mark since a 100–55 victory against Wright State on December 27th, 2014; it also tied for the most points in the Thad Matta era.

Though the Thundering Herd was anything but shy when it came to shooting from range, the Buckeyes made the most of their size and athletic advantages early and often on Friday night. After Marshall took a 3-0 lead on their first possession, Ohio State scored the next seven, and never looked back, extending to a 27-14 lead at the under 12-minute media timeout.

For the second game in a row, the Buckeyes took to the hardwood without forward Keita Bates-Diop, who suffered a sprained ankle a week-and-a-half ago against Western Carolina. Fortunately for the home team, they didn’t miss his 10.3 points per game, as Thad Matta’s team seemed to bring a newly found up-tempo flow to the offense as they focused on pounding the ball into the paint. The Buckeyes finished the game with 62 points around the rim.

After the team employed a more grinding, methodical offense in the opening five games, the focus on both the inside and transition games opened up Buckeye shooters from beyond the arc. After the first period, Ohio State led 60-37, as they shot 6-15 for 40% from beyond the arc, and 16-22 from inside five feet. The offensive output marked the first time that the Buckeyes had scored 60 points in a first half since they did so against Chicago State in 1991.

In the first half, senior forward Marc Loving hit a three from the top of the key to make him the 53rd player in Ohio State history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, Loving finished his best game of the year with 20 points and 14 boards. Also in the first half, starting center Micah Potter was cut under the eye and had to receive three stitches from the team doctor. On his second shot after returning to the game, he hit a three-pointer to extend the Buckeye lead to 41-17. He finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, marking his first double-double as a Buckeye.

The first half was full of athletic plays from the Buckeyes including a number of dunks, alley-oops, and circus shots. They were helped by a Marshall defense that was porous at best. The Herd’s starting forward Ryan Taylor was suspended for the game, following a blowup against Jackson State on Monday. Three Buckeyes finished the first half in double figures, Loving and Kam Williams with 11 and Trevor Thompson with 15.

Williams continued his hot shooting from behind the arc going five for nine to finish with 17 points on the night. Junior guard Jon Elmore led the way for The Herd with 25 points and six assists. His backcourt mate Austin Loop also chipped in with 15.

The second half brought a more aggressive Marshall opening up with a 15-5 run to cut the OSU lead to 65-49. The Buckeyes responded by shaking off the halftime cobwebs and going on a 15-2 run to reassert their dominance, 82-54.

The Buckeyes dominated the boards all night, out rebounding Marshall 61-32 overall, and 27-12 on the offensive glass.

The Buckeyes next take to the court on Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. ET in Charlottesville, VA, as they battle the Virginia Cavaliers in the Big Ten/ACC Shootout for the second year in a row. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

3 things we learned

1. Ohio State is a better team when they play inside-out. When a team possesses the size-advantage that OSU did against Marshall, scoring from the paint should be lopsided, however, the Buckeyes’ dominance in the lane was more than just offensive put-backs, although there were plenty of those as well.

In transition and from half-court sets, the Bucks were conscious of getting high-percentage shots, and it paid off with the home team going 31-41 on layups and dunks for 62 points.

Ohio State clearly won’t have this type of size-advantage when they get into conference play, but it’s clear that if they can work inside-out, it will benefit both the bigs and the shooters, especially since in some cases, they are one-in-the-same.

2. Ohio State is a better team when they play with tempo. With a team returning its top six scorers from the last season, one would assume that athleticism would be a strength for the squad. However, early in the season, the Buckeyes have looked out of sorts on offense, but on Friday night, a renewed commitment to playing with tempo seemed to focus the specific skills of each individual player.

The shooters saw more space to get their shots up, the forwards were able to be more physical down low, and the offensive spacing was the best it has been all season.

Ohio State will see much stiffer defense in the Big Ten season, and in their next game against UVA on Wednesday, but if Matta and company is looking for a blueprint on how to maximize the team’s offensive output, I would humbly suggest the Marshall game-tape.

3. Ohio State’s frontcourt will hold its own in the Big Ten. The Big Ten is known for its bruising big men, and while I don’t think that anyone would put Potter and Thompson in that category, they proved that when the offense is flowing, they should be able to at least hold their own against the conference’s best. Even though Potter tried his hand at a few threes, he was a consistent presence under the rim on both sides of the court.

They were also helped by their bigger wings, Loving and Tate specifically, mixing it up in the lane as well. Again, they will get more resistance down low in the coming months, but against Marshall, Potter, Thompson, et al. gave fans reason to think that they won’t be pushed around throughout the B1G season.

kels__1_.0.jpeg

On a night when Kelsey Mitchell rewrote another record, the Buckeyes beat a scrappy Eagles squad.

Kelsey Mitchell broke another record for the Ohio State women’s basketball team in Friday’s 79-66 win over Florida Gulf Coast in the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament in Estero, Florida. A long distance make with two minutes remaining in the third quarter by the All-American junior gave her the career mark for three-point field goals made.

Mitchell, who scored 25 points in the ballgame, now has 273 three-pointers in her Buckeye career, passing Caity Matter (2001-2005), who finished with 270.

Shayla Cooper and Stephanie Mavunga both posted double-doubles for Ohio State, which enjoyed a definite size advantage and beat FGCU on the boards 52-31 en route to improving its record to 4-1 on the season.

The Eagles were led by Nasrin Ulel and Taylor Gradinjan, each of whom scored 13.

Neither side was lighting up the nets in the early going, but Ohio State used its superior size to take an 11-7 lead through the game’s first six minutes. Mavunga led the way with six points and three rebounds in that time.

Florida Gulf Coast hung tough despite its early shooting struggles, holding the Buckeyes to just 38.9 percent from the floor, 1-for-8 from three-point range, and staying relatively even on the glass despite not having a single player over six feet tall. Jordin Alexander scored six points for the Eagles in the first quarter.

Cooper matched Mavunga with six points, and added five rebounds, as the scarlet and grey finished the opening frame with a 19-16 lead.

It wasn’t until two minutes into the second quarter that Mitchell made her first field goal, and it was a big one. Knocking down a triple from the left wing, she tied the program’s career mark for three-pointers made. The shot was part of a 8-0 run for the Buckeyes, who stretch the lead out to 27-21.

FGCU came back with a 7-0 run of their own, the last five points of which were scored by Gradinjan, to reclaim the lead 28-27.

The Eagles then went more than four minutes without a bucket, but Ohio State went cold for more than three of its own. A deep make by Mikala McGhee with just 13 seconds remaining sent the Buckeyes to the locker room with just a 36-35 lead.

Cooper and Mavunga had nine points apiece in the first half to lead the way, with Mitchell adding six. Ohio State was just 2-for-11 from the three-point arc, but managed to hold FGCU to 31.4 percent shooting. Gradinjan scored eight to pace the Eagles.

It was the same Mitchell-Cooper-Mavunga trio that staked the Buckeyes to a 47-39 lead by the halfway mark of the third quarter, scoring all 11 of the team’s points. Mitchell scored nine in the period, Cooper added seven, and Ohio State headed to the final 10 minutes with a 54-48 lead.

A 9-0 run in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, punctuated by a deep Mitchell three, finally gave the Buckeyes some breathing room, as they pushed the lead out to 65-51.

FGCU roared back with a 9-0 run of its own to close the gap to just 70-63, but it was too little too late.

Ohio State will now play at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday against the winner of a Syracuse-George Washington being played later tonight.

You are remembered as a Buckeye on what you do to the Wolverines.

“[Ohio State] only beat the Wolverines twice in the ’90s, but they started to fight back in the few years before I arrived in 2006. One of my goals was to help Ohio State dominate the rivalry once again.”

– Chris “Beanie” Wells, The Players Tribune

In a piece penned to The Players Tribune, Chris “Beanie” Wells talked about the magnitude of The Game, as well as creating a legacy against the Buckeyes most bitter of rivals.

Wells reminisces on a moving speech by OSU quarterback Troy Smith in 2006 that propelled Wells to bust out a huge run against UM for a touchdown in the highly anticipated ‘Game of the Century’ when both schools were ranked as No. 1 and No. 2. From there, Wells breaks down going to The Big House the following year, the coincidences of the toilets and electricity not working in the visitors locker room and then rushing for two touchdowns in a 14-3 win in 2007.

The memories last with Beanie, but the moral of the story rings for those who are playing, and will play in The Game: As a Buckeye, you are defined by what you do against the Wolverines. Wells rattled off a 3-0 record against the maize and blue, which puts the pressure on current and future Buckeyes to do the same.

Everything from senior tackle to playing with the band are memories etched into every Ohio State football player’s memory. The biggest memory being how they did against The Team Up North.

"It was just like, great timing, I guess, that it came together when they were playing Michigan in the biggest game of the season,"

– LeBron James on having his signature shoe being worn by the Buckeyes before Saturday’s game, as reported by the Associated Press (via ESPN.com)

The hoopla surrounding OSU-UM will bring the hoops biggest star to Columbus tomorrow. LeBron James, who’s shoe was designed for the Buckeyes to wear on the gridiron, will be in attendance at The ‘Shoe to see his shoe be worn by the Scarlet and Gray. It also helps that this game was one on his “bucket list”.

On the opposing side, the Wolverines will be rocking the Jordan brand jerseys. In a way, the basketball world his spilled onto the college football arena, thus creating an indirect Jordan v. James matchup.

For James, running down to Columbus to catch the game will be smack-dab in the middle of a weekend that involves two NBA contests. Either way, it should be a busy weekend for the King of Hoops.

“For the first time in 10 years, a top-five team is guaranteed to lose this game.”

– Bill Connelly, SBNation

Fanfare for The Game hasn’t reached this level of a fever pitch since the 2006 meeting. Wells talked about making a big play (and did) in the Buckeyes 42-39 victory that sent them to the national championship game.

Since then, the luster for the rivalry has shown signs of oxidation, but in the form of Michigan not living up to Michigan/Schembechler standards. The last time both these teams met each other in a top five contest that featured both teams in the national championship picture was in 2006 – which is way too long for this rivalry.

Connelly goes more in-depth, specifically in the late 1960s, and looks at the Bo Schembechler-Woody Hayes dynamic that lifted the rivalry to where it is today. In the times of the ‘10 Year War’, the Wolverines and Buckeyes were practically playing each other in de facto Big Ten title games.

Since the departure of Lloyd Carr after the 2007 season, the Wolverines have spent most of the time trying to get into a decent bowl game, while the Buckeyes were the ones fighting for Big Ten title and BCS championship aspirations.

With the reinvigoration of Jim Harbaugh, a Schembechler pupil, at UM, The Game has finally got back to where it was supposed to be. Now, we wait and see what the outcomes will be.

No. 5 has always been excellent. He’ll have to be even better on Saturday.

In late 2015, a man named Raekwon gave an interview in which he described the roots of his incredible journey, his path to becoming a superstar, thusly:

The thing about me was I was always trying to be successful at whatever I do...All I needed was a shot. I feel I have it. I have my confidence at where I need to be at. I think every man's life, that journey is already written to where it's going to play out. I was just taking it day by day...I was inspired by others that was in it before me and paved the way...I always had a vision but I didn't know when it was going to strike.

That interview was not with standout Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan, but with his namesake, Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon The Chef. Still, it could just as easily describe the meteoric rise of the Scarlet and Gray’s No. 5, a linebacker whose dedication and work ethic have made him into the cornerstone of the Buckeye defense in 2016.

Plenty of others have paved the way for McMillan’s success at Ohio State, from Curtis Grant (who he nearly Wally Pipp’d as a freshman) to James Laurinaitis to Ryan Shazier. (Really, the Buckeyes have been unparalleled as a linebacker factory in the last decade or so.) His vision, as it were, has struck; he’s a tackling machine without whom the Silver Bullets would be a shell of themselves.

Raekwon The Chef was Built 4 Cuban Linx. Raekwon McMillan was built to dismantle opposing offenses. Let’s take a look at how:

The stats

Name: Raekwon McMillan

Number: 5

Position: Middle linebacker

Year: Junior

Height: 6’2

Weight: 243

Line: 50.5 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1 sack, 2 forced fumbles

It was a surprise to absolutely no one when McMillan was named a captain prior to the 2016 season. He’s spent 11 games this season proving why he deserves the title. He’s the Buckeyes’ leading tackler, a master at containing the run and reading plays so quickly that he’s in on just about every gang tackle racked up by Ohio State.

This Saturday will likely be his last game against Michigan. He’s only a junior, but No. 5 has the skills and the hype to leave for the NFL this spring. Given how well he played against the Wolverines in 2015, it’d be incredible to see Raekwon go out with one more crushing performance against his team’s biggest rival.

Opposition research

Wolverines QB Wilton Speight is on the mend from a shoulder injury that kept him out of last week’s game against Indiana. It’s his non-throwing shoulder, so he’s been able to bounce back quicker than would normally be expected. Still, he’s not a 100% certainty for the team’s contest with the Buckeyes, though he did split reps in practice with John O’Korn on Tuesday.

The question marks surrounding the QB position mean that Michigan is likely to go to the ground game early and often against the Buckeyes. It’s paid dividends for the Wolverines this year: they’ve scored a ridiculous 37 rushing touchdowns so far. Senior De’Veon Smith leads the pack with 750 yards and 10 TDs, but four different backs have recorded at least 65 carries for Michigan in 2016.

If the Wolverines do go to the air, TE Jake Butt will be one of the primary targets. He’s second on the team in targets and receiving yards; perhaps more importantly, it’s his last chance to earn a win against Ohio State. Butt’s a tremendous player with a tremendous name, and the Buckeyes—who have struggled at times to contain tight ends in the passing game—are going to have to shut him down and force the Wolverines to beat them on the ground instead.

What to watch for

The good news is that Raekwon McMillan is uniquely suited to make an impact based on both of these factors. He’s not one to get after the quarterback, recording just 2.5 total sacks across the last two seasons; rather, he’s one of the most effective run-stoppers in college football when teams hand the ball off. His doggedness at the line of scrimmage is one of his best assets, and he’ll need to show it off against the Wolverines.

He’s also a proficient, if not flashy, defender in the passing game. Raekwon’s ability to read offenses quickly and identify whether he should stay at home or drop back into coverage is tremendous; when he does drop into coverage, he has the raw skills to get up and make plays on the ball.

Michigan’s bruising offensive line and talented rushers make hay by wearing teams down, and they wreak havoc in secondaries with their complement of big receiving targets at multiple positions. Ohio State’s captain can—and must—have an answer to each of those weapons in turn.

Hate week is upon us and after narrowly escaping East Lansing with a win against a struggling Spartan team, the Ohio State Buckeyes are on a collision course against TTUN. This game is the definition of what a rivalry is and what it should be. High stakes, high reward, high pressure to secure another win in this series. Rivalry week is the best week in College Football. Hands down. This years installment of The Game will feature two Top-3 teams in the nation. This will be the second time in the series, where both teams are ranked, and in the Top-3. The last time? The last time this happened was ten years ago when The Game featured the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes at home against the #2 ranked Team Up North. This game was played in high stakes fashion as the 42-39 win helped the Buckeyes stay undefeated and into the BCS National Championship Game, coincidentally against an Urban Meyer coached Florida Gators team. Flash forward ten years later, we have another high stakes game with huge College Football Playoff implications. #2 Ohio State will be wearing the LeBron Soldier cleats against the newly minted, #3, Jordan Branded Team Up North.

Last week, we saw a Buckeye team that barely walked out of East Lansing with a win. A one point win. I am a strong believer in “a win is a win”, and no matter how ugly it was, it is still added into the win column. The Buckeyes gave up huge chunk plays, early and often, only to stiffen up in the red zone. The coaching staff leaned on J.T. Barrett to move the sticks and with help from Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel, they won the game. On TTUN’s side of things, they also won, but not as big as some thought they would win. They played at home and beat Indiana by 10, with a final score of 20-10. Yes, it is a double-digit lead and win, but TTUN could have scored more. I mean for what its worth, Ohio State faced the same team and beat them 38-17 after struggling in the first half. Indiana is a tougher team, and they tend to improve year after year. We cannot judge it accurately based on both teams’ performance against a 5-7 team, so we will just have to wait and see.

I cannot emphasize how great this rivalry has been to me as a die hard fan. I think back at it, I lived in Guam for most of my life and I was introduced to College Football in 2005 when I joined the USAF, and I have been a fan ever since. Now? You would think that I was from Ohio. The passion and the affinity I have for the Buckeyes is very hard and too difficult to explain in simple words. This rivalry has ruined holidays for me and it stresses me out. This week has killed my soul a little bit because I do not want to lose to TTUN. This year will break the record for Number of Times Major Rivals met ranked in the Top 5 (11), edging the Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas (10). This game, The Game, is usually a high-pressure game, with both teams clawing, fighting and scrapping the entire game for bragging rights. As long as I have been a fan, I have seen great games that add to the tradition for both schools. Seasons are made or ruined in an instant and during this weeks game, the emotion of the game will be electric because so much is on the line. I can’t undersell the importance of this game.

unnamed-6-300x169.jpg
The Ohio State Big-3 on offense, J.T. Barrett, Mike Weber and Curtis Samuel will be leaned on heavily. I cannot emphasize this enough as Coach Meyer often shrinks down his playbook to do enough to win. During The Game, with the crew from College Gameday and with a laundry list of highly ranked and touted recruits, and a ton of talented blue-chip prospects, I would hope that the offense starts off strong and continues it until the end. A lot of eyes will be on this game and the stakes are the highest that it has been in a long time. J.T. Barrett will need to move the stick early and often against a team led by upperclassmen. Jabrill Pepper and Jourdan Lewis will look to shut Barrett down by pressuring him early and consistently. The Slobs need to almost play a perfect, penalty free football game, and this is where it gets interesting. Ohio State has two experienced Slobs in Senior Pat Elflein and Junior Billy Price. After those two, you have a Junior in Jamarco Jones, a Sophomore in Isaiah Prince and True Freshman Michael Jordan, who played High School Football up north in Plymouth. Jones and Prince are prone to penalties, often holding on to defenders to keep Barrett upright. Elflein and Price also tend to earn flags, so we will see if they could work as a cohesive unit to control the line of scrimmage and to protect Barrett. Mike Weber will also be leaned on and he is one of three starters for the Buckeyes, who played up north in high school. He needs to be fed like Zeke and Hyde to control the clock. I will say that Curtis Samuel will also need more than the 8 touches he had during the Spartans because things looked bleak for a little while before they went for two. Noah Brown and Dontre Wilson, and the rest of the Zone 6 will also need to get separation against the opposing Defensive Backs. The team cannot be one dimensional as TTUN ranks in the Top-5 in just about every defensive statistic in the nation. Ohio State is in the Top-5 in most rushing statistics this season. Hopefully, they play with passion because this game is really important. Maybe Coach Meyer and his staff have some bulletin board material because I saw an excerpt from an interview with Peppers with him saying that “Ohio State does not do anything over the top that they cannot handle” and that “it is nothing that we cannot handle.”. I hope they have some plays that they have stashed away, that will unleash havoc on those Wolverines.

images-26-300x159.jpg
The Basic Ohio State Defense needs to show up this week. Last week, the Buckeyes faced a pro-style offensive scheme, that is similar to or close to what TTUN runs. Two Tight End sets with a steady dose old school, big boy football. L.J. Scott nearly beat the Buckeyes by himself and the team needs to focus on wrapping up the ball carrier and not overpursuing or overshooting plays. We saw that a ton against the Spartans and they will need to play a flawless game like the offense to get the win. Jake Butt, Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson will be the trio of receivers that the Silver Bullets and the Scarlet Curtain will have to stop. The Rushmen will have to stop De’veon Smith and the Running Back platoon that TTUN has. This will be a test as the TTUN’s Offensive Line is pretty good. There are a lot of variables that could change with injuries, fights, and ejections. The biggest question would be which Quarterback will they face. John O’Korn played last week and he did good enough to win. Wilton Speight, the starter for the majority of the season, was injured during the loss at Iowa, and his status is unclear at this point. There are reports that he is out for the season with a broken collarbone, but his head coach refutes those stories. Mind games or not, we cannot take this team lightly, and I doubt that they would, but it wouldn’t hurt to know. Until we do, we will have to prepare for both. It will be interesting to see if Malik Hooker matches up against Peppers, since he plays both ways. I am sure that the jet sweep will be used a lot, stretching the defense to open up holes. You truly never know and hopefully a Buckeye legend or Senior Captain will inspire each unit to maintain the dominance.

Prediction: Buckeyes over Wolverines 24-21.

The OSU Medical Center is upping the adorable game this weekend.

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is upping its adorable game after introducing the traditional “Beat Michigan Week” blankets earlier this week. In order to keep up with the latest addition to the team’s uniform kit for Saturday, all babies born on Friday and Saturday at the hospital will receive a pair of LeBron James’ Soldier 10 Infant hightops, donated by Nike Football and Basketball.

For years, the OSU Medical Center has celebrated the greatest rivalry in college football by wrapping newborns in “Beat Michigan” rivalry blankets during the week of The Game. While that is one of the cutest traditions possible, with the addition of the LeBron kicks, it is now also the coolest.

No. 2 Ohio State hosts No. 3 Michigan at the Horseshoe on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET. The Game will be broadcast on ABC nationwide, and we just might see some new kicks there as well.
