The Buckeyes have found their Luke Fickell replacement.

Once Luke Fickell decided to take the head coaching position at Cincinnati, the Buckeyes were short a defensive coach. But they didn’t need to wait very long before finding a replacement.

Per a university release, Ohio State has hired Bill Davis, the former defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, as a defensive assistant coach. Davis’ specific position group and responsibilities are still to be determined.

Davis, who went to Cincinnati with Urban Meyer, had been working as an analyst on Ohio State’s staff. He spent 24 years in the NFL, virtually his entire career. Davis last worked in the college ranks as a graduate assistant at Michigan State.

Given his long background in the NFL as a linebackers position coach, and given that Fickell worked with linebackers himself, it seems probable that Davis will work with Ohio State’s linebackers in some capacity. Whether his job title is defensive coordinator, or simply a position coach (with perhaps Greg Schiano taking full DC responsibilities), is unclear, but we should find out soon.

National Signing Day will be here before you know it. Here’s where things stand right now.

We’re in a “dead period” for Ohio State recruiting right now, as everybody takes a quick break for the holidays and bowl preparation. That means coaches are only able to call recruits. But just because official visits aren’t happening right now, that doesn’t mean that the cogs of the recruiting machine aren’t still turning as we approach the end of the 2017 recruiting class.

If you haven’t been paying attention for a while, don’t worry. We’ll get you up to speed on where things stand now, and Ohio State’s biggest targets for the end of this class.

So, how is Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class shaping up to be?

Good would be a fantastic understatement. Right now, on paper, the 2017 class is historically good.

The Buckeyes currently have 17 commitments, and sit No. 2 nationally in the 247Sports Composite rankings, only behind, and this is going to shock you, Alabama. But the Tide have 25 players committed, and Ohio State’s per player average rating (95.72) is easily the best in the country. Only one other school is above a 93.

Right now, Ohio State has commitments from an astonishing six five-star rated players. 16 of their 17 commitments are rated as blue-chip (four-star or better) players, with the lone exception, Blake Haubiel, a three-star kicker. And oh yeah, he’s the top rated kicker in the country.

Could Ohio State finish with the top ranked recruiting class in the country?

It is possible, but unlikely. That’s because this won’t be as large of a class as Ohio State’s last few groups. Depending on what kind of roster attrition Ohio State experiences this offseason, the final 2017 recruiting class is mostly expected to be between 20-22 players. Teams that simply bring in more players, like Alabama, or even Michigan (who might sign as many as 30 this year), could pass them. But finishing lower than say, fourth, would be a major surprise. And on a per-recruit basis, the Buckeyes have an excellent shot at finishing best in the country.

Are any current commitments a high risk for flipping?

There have been a few decommitments in this class already, more than there were in 2016 even. Recruiting can change very quickly, but right now, it doesn’t appear that anybody currently on this list is particularly likely to flip. Five-star DB Shaun Wade was thought to be a risk to flip to Alabama throughout much of his recruitment process, but he recently, and publicly, recommitted to Ohio State. Five-star LB Barron Browning, one of the Buckeyes’ most recent additions, will likely continue to be recruited by Alabama, Texas, and others, but saying he’s a high risk for a flip would be premature.

Who else could join this recruiting class on offense?

It is entirely possible that the Buckeyes don’t add a single other recruit on the offensive side of the ball. It’s not like this class is short on playmakers right now, as it includes five-star WR Trevon Grimes, five-star offensive linemen Wyatt Davis and Josh Myers, high four-star WR Tyjon Lindsey, and four-star QB Tate Martell, who was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year. That’s not even an exhaustive list.

There are two other possible names on offense who could join the group, though. One is four-star WR Jaylen Harris, the highest ranked player in Ohio that has yet to commit to Ohio State. WR isn’t a dire need, given the inclusion of Grimes and Lindsey, along with Ohio State’s recruiting efforts last season. But Harris provides size, and a more traditional WR mold that was lacking from this season’s team. His commitment has progressed slowly, and it isn’t entirely clear if the Buckeyes have room. But if they make him a priority, they should be able to get him.

Another possible target is four-star offensive tackle Thayer Munford. After the decommitment of four-star Jake Moretti, who flipped to Colorado so he could enroll early, the Buckeyes may want to replace him with another offensive lineman. A bit of a late bloomer as far as recruiting is concerned, Munford, an Ohio kid at Massillon, also has offers from Pitt, Kentucky, Michigan State, Iowa State, and others.

Five-star RB Cam Akers is no longer considering Ohio State. Look for the Buckeyes to just take one running back this year, given the multitude of options in 2018.

Who else could join this recruiting class on defense?

This is the side of the ball where more additions are likely.

The name most likely to pull the trigger first is five-star defensive back Jeffery Okudah. Okudah will commit on Jan. 7, and is widely expected to pick the Buckeyes over Oklahoma, Texas, Stanford, and a slew of other major programs. He would give the Buckeyes a ridiculous seven five-star rated commits in one class, which is more than many conferences get in one cycle.

He also might not be the last. Another name that’s been trending Ohio State’s way is five-star defensive back Darnay Holmes, of Calabasas, CA. Holmes will also commit on the 7th at the Army All-American Bowl, and the Buckeyes have gained a lot of steam over UCLA, the other presumed major player in his recruitment. For my money, Okudah is more likely than Holmes, but both are certainly possible.

Should one, or both, of those names fall through, the Buckeyes are also strongly pursuing four-star athlete Markquese Bell, of New Jersey. Bell is scheduled to commit on New Year’s Day, and the 247Sports Crystal Ball currently favors Rutgers, at 42%. Maryland, Virginia Tech and Michigan are also involved, but Ohio State has made up a lot of ground, and would like to take him if they have the room.

Another possible name to consider is Kendall Sheffield, a JUCO DB from Texas. Texas A&M is the current Crystal Ball leader here, but the Buckeyes are in the hunt. Bubba Bolden, a name formerly tied to Ohio State, will probably go to USC.

It would make sense for the Buckeyes to load up on defensive backs in this class, given that they may lose nearly their entire secondary from this season to the NFL Draft, and don’t have experienced depth there like they do at other position groups. Early playing time may be available.

The other position group where Ohio State would like to add a name is defensive tackle, even though they have two already committed. The two big names here are Marvin Wilson, the top ranked defensive tackle in the country, and Jay Tufele, a four-star out of Utah. The Buckeyes aren’t favorites in either of these races, with Texas and LSU the likely favorites for Wilson, and with Utah and Michigan fighting hard for Tufele, with the Utes seemingly with the most momentum. The Buckeyes could swing one of them, but right now, either would be an upset.

So all of this is good, right?

Yes. This is good news. When there is more good news, we’ll let you know.

The Buckeyes are doing what they can to get the St.Louis star.

A third visit?

Class of 2018 defensive tackle Michael Thompson (Saint Louis, MO / Parkway North HS) has made it apparent that he wants to visit Columbus, Ohio once more, which would mark his third total visit to Ohio State. Thompson has held the Buckeyes in high regard in his recruitment thus far, and it looks like Ohio State will continue positive momentum in this recruiting battle.

Country's No. 7 2018 D-tackle @mthompson201 has visited #OhioState twice, says he will make a third visit VIP https://t.co/2T0awComMo

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) December 20, 2016

Thompson checks in at 6-foot-3, 290 pounds and is a true run-stopper. He is a top 100 player in the 2018 class in addition to being rated as the No. 7 defensive tackle. Larry Johnson has taken the lead in this recruitment and he has the Buckeyes in a good position as we head into the winter/spring months. As always, it will be a tough battle to pull a recruit from out of state. However, Ohio State is positioned well enough to make a run for Thompson and will most definitely be pushing to land the four-star prospect. There is no reasons that would indicate this recruitment will be over soon. At the moment, Thompson has 17 offers that include Missouri, Arkansas, Michigan and Iowa.

To the West Coast

Staying in the class of 2018, four-star safety Jaiden Woodbey (Upland, CA / St. John Bosco) told reporters that Ohio State will remain in the list of his top schools throughout his recruiting process. Woodbey, who stands at 6-foot-2, is the No. 32 overall player in his class in addition to being rated the No. 3 safety. There’s no question that Ohio State will be a major player in this recruitment, but USC and Washington will provide stiff competition. Ohio State has recently loaded up in the defensive backfield and Greg Schiano and Urban Meyer will look to make sure that trend continues in 2018. Woodbey holds 19 total offers that includes UCLA and Alabama, according to 247Sports. Look for the Buckeyes to try and get Woodbey on campus before his senior year starts.

QUICK HITS

Long-time running back target Cam Akers released his final six schools that he will be considering and Ohio State did not make the cut. The Buckeyes should be wrapped up at the running back position for 2017 with J.K. Dobbins in the fold and not likely to waiver on his commitment.

Buckeyes shine on boards and defense to roll past Youngstown State.

After a close but still tough loss to UCLA in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Ohio State was looking to come together as a team against Youngstown State and continue to gear up for the Big Ten season. That they did as they came out to a blistering start and never looked back while leaving the Penguins in the dust, winning 77-40.

The game didn't quite start out the way the Bucks were looking for though, Ohio State freshman starting Center, Micah Potter, went down injured on the games opening tip-off. He appeared to come down hard and roll it on the floor before coming out of the game.

After the tip-off though the game started to fall in Ohio State’s way as they went on an impressive run and just 12 minutes were up 27-5. The Bucks dominance continued into the half with a 42-14 lead.

The lead was characterized by OSU’s dominating defense, which held Youngstown State to just 14.8% shooting in the first half. On the opposite end of the spectrum OSU shot a very solid 48.5% in the first half which led to their strong start.

In the first half OSU Center, Trevor Thompson, dominated the boards with 12 first half rebounds, an almost unheard of number for one half of play. Elsewhere for Ohio State in the first half Kam Williams started strong with a dunk, 3-pointer, and layup to put up 7 first half points.

For Youngstown State the first half was full of struggles, especially from their highly though of Guard Francisco Santiago. In the first half alone he was a dissaopinting 0-3 with a turnover. The teams second leading scorer had been averaging 13.2 points a game going in and could not get anything started for their offense. The rest of the team barely fared any better in the half, as they struggled on offense and defense.

To start the second half Ohio State appeared to cool down considerably, although they had such a large lead it hardly seemed to matter. Youngstown State closed the Ohio State lead down to 57-30, 8 minutes into the second half before the Buckeyes seemed to wake up and start dominating again.

Ohio State’s gameplay was highlighted by strong play in the point, with an impressive 48 points in the paint. This was on top of 62% shooting percentage for them down low to really lead the way for the offense.

Sophomore Forward Keita Beites-Diop lead the inside scoring threat for the Bucks with 15 points in the game, primarily coming from the paint.

On top of that Trevor Thompson got his double-double in the second half after getting even more rebounds and with 5:13 left in the half already had 11 points and 15 rebounds. After a impressive 17 point and 17 rebound performance in the win against UCONN he proved his huge stats are not a fluke and simply dominated YSU along the boards.

The second half continued to be dominated by the Buckeyes as outside of some light scoring YSU couldn’t stop Ohio State in the paint. They finished shooting just 21% from the floor compared to the Buckeyes respectable 50% for the game.

The basketball Bucks return to action Thursday against UNC Asheville at 9:00 PM EST from Value City Arena. The game will be only be broadcast via the radio from 97.1 FM.

Three things we learned:

1. Trevor Thompson is scary good on the boards.

The junior was incredibly good from the boards finishing with 15 rebounds and 11 points. Him playing lights out close to the rim is a tremendous boost for the Buckeye offense and led the way in the first half.

2. The buckeyes can distribute.

Three different players for Ohio State put up 15 points in the game and that all came with Jaquan Lyle putting up 10 assists. His passing ability shined through and further allowed the Buckeyes to break through on offense and dominate YSU from end to end. All in all with 27 points from the bench and 48 points in the paint OSU relied on scoring from almost everyone and showed that they can be lethal on offense.

3. Defense, defense, defense

Ohio State led a stifling defense today and really were able to shut down YSU. Holding any opponent to 21% will win a game, especially when the opposition is only shooting 4-27 in the first half. On top of that the Buckeyes had a very impressive 9 blocks with 3 a piece from Trevor Thompson, David Bell, and Keita Bates-Diop. You can’t lose if you don’t let the opponents score and Ohio State capitalized on their strong interior and exterior defense to shutdown YSU and fully dominate the game.

The rookie sensation lead voting early in a record-breaking year.

The 2017 Pro Bowl roster was announced Tuesday, and former Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliot was selected for first-team honors after leading the league by almost 100,000 fan votes in early December.

The Dallas Cowboys’ rookie sensation has taken over the NFL, breaking franchise and league records with 310 carries for 1,551 yards and 13 total touchdowns. Elliott also has 351 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. The running back quickly became a fan favorite from his crop-top to jumping into a Salvation Army kettle; he’s brought enough excitement for the NFL to flex several Cowboy games to primetime.

Despite being honored with the Pro Bowl vote, the running back could miss the event-filled weekend with another big game in mind. The 12-2 Cowboys have already clinched a spot in the playoffs, and are one game away from winning the NFC East and snagging a first round bye. Only the Giants have been able to stop the offensive weapon that is Zeke, and he could help the team get to Super Bowl LI.

With two games left in the 2016 NFL regular season, injuries and postseason runs could mean that alternate players — other Buckeyes — will get a chance to step up. The Pro Bowl game will be played on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
