This is part one of our advanced stats preview series for the Fiesta Bowl

Ohio State vs. Clemson is the best possible bowl match up Buckeye fans could have hoped for.

On one level, there are plenty of storylines: revenge for the 2014 Orange Bowl loss, J.T. vs. Deshaun, and Meyer vs. Swinney. But the advanced stats also show two teams that couldn’t be more similar, both in quality in overall profile.

Ceilings and floors

Ohio State and Clemson are ranked 3rd and 4th in the S&P+, 2nd and 5th in the FEI, and 2nd and 4th in the combined F/+.

S&P+ Rk S&P+ Volatility FEI Rk F/+ Rk
Ohio State 27.6 3rd 25.6 .295 2nd 66.3% 2nd
Clemson 22.7 4th 18.9 .253 5th 55.5% 4th

A couple of things from that chart. First, in all of these advanced metrics, Ohio State is a slightly higher-ranked team, but both are considered obviously playoff caliber. The starting Vegas spreads, which were around 3 to 3.5 points, seem about right based on these numbers.

Second, the S&P+ margin (the first column of data) is the average expected points margin for a game against a hypothetical average opponent. In the S&P+, that's actually a fairly big gap. For instance, Alabama and Michigan are nearly equal at 31.5 and 31.3 margins. Then Ohio State is essentially its own second tier at 27.6, almost four points below the top two. Then there's almost a 5 point gap between the Buckeyes and Clemson at 22.7. If S&P+ tiers are teams in the same ~4-point range, then Alabama and Michigan would be one tier, Ohio State would be its own tier, then Clemson, LSU, Washington, Louisville, USC, Florida State, Oklahoma, and Auburn would all be in the third tier. There's a smaller difference between Ohio State and Alabama than between Clemson and Ohio State, and 8-4 Auburn is closer to Clemson's S&P+ margin than Clemson is to Ohio State.

However, the Buckeyes have shown that they're capable of wide swings in their play, as seen in the S&P+ volatility numbers. These haven't been updated for post-championship weekend yet (that's coming!), but it still gives you a sense for how wildly variable Ohio State is compared to Clemson, and gives you a sense for their relative ceilings and floors. Because the Buckeyes have almost a touchdown higher volatility, their floor is actually almost two points lower than Clemson's. But Ohio State's ceiling is also much higher -- 53.2 compared to 41.6 for Clemson.

I want to stress that these are very rough estimations of a team's floor and ceiling, but it nevertheless gives you a sense for possible outcomes: by far the most likely outcome is a close win for either team, but there's also a (much smaller) chance of an Ohio State blowout. A Clemson blowout isn't impossible, but much less likely.

Win likelihood

Ohio State currently has a 61% win probability against Clemson, with a projected margin of about 4.9 points. So while the S&P+ would like Ohio State to win 6 out of 10 games against the Tigers, that's still 4 times that the Tigers would win.

When you consider Ohio State's volatility, just about any score besides a 14+ point win for Clemson wouldn't surprise me.

Performance baselines and poor showings

For each game Bill calculates a percentage performance. This number compares the team's single game performance to their statistical resume to say whether they were playing to their potential or not.

This season Ohio State has averaged a 76% performance and Clemson has average a 75% performance. However, Ohio State also has four games with a +95% performance and two games below 25% (including a 5% performance against Michigan State). Clemson has two performances over 95% and just one below 25% (18% against Pitt). That's just another way of showing Ohio State's wider ceiling and floor, which likely results from the larger percentage of first time starters for the Buckeyes.

Clemson has had three games with a sub-50% performance -- next we'll dig in to what happened in those three games to try and pin down Clemson's weaknesses.

The Buckeyes class of 2017 just keeps on rolling in the awards.

Another Buckeye commit picks up an accolade

Recent linebacker commit Baron Browning received some hardware on Tuesday morning. Browning, a consensus five-star prospect, was named the Texas state Defensive Player of the Year for class 4A. The highest rated division in Texas is 6A, but the competition Browning plays against is no joke. Browning helped Kennedale High School to a district championship in 2016. Browning will compete for instant playing time as a freshman when he enrolls at Ohio State.

The state of South Carolina blocks out the Bucks

Elite 2018 defensive end Xavier Thomas (Florence, SC / Wilson) released his top two on Wednesday—and that list did not include Ohio State. Thomas, the No.2 prospect in his class and a unanimous five-star, made it apparent that he will only be going forward with the two in-state programs: South Carolina and Clemson. With this news, Ohio State will likely not completely stop recruiting Thomas, but it may be a moot point with it seeming very set-in-stone that he will play in the state of South Carolina in college. Thomas holds 28 total offers, including one from the Buckeyes. Though he’s set on playing in his home state, he attends IMG Academy, which most likely played a role in helping him realize how much he wanted to return home for college.

For whom the Bell tolls?

Buckeye target Markquese Bell has made his intentions public that he will be choosing his future college on Jan. 1 at the Under Armour Game. Bell is listed as a 6-foot-3 athlete that will most likely be a safety at the next level. With numbers being tight, it’s still uncertain that there will be room for the four-star prospect. Bell recently visited Columbus at the end of November and there is definitely mutual interest on both sides. The Ohio State coaching staff may not have the numbers entirely figured out by Jan. 1, so if Bell sticks to that date, it will most likely not be for the Buckeyes. Still, expect Ohio State to keep recruiting Bell all the way to National Signing Day regardless of what happens in a few weeks.

In a ranking of the most entertaining postseason matchups, Ohio State and Clemson top the list.

“1. College Football Playoff semifinal at the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl: No. 3 Ohio State vs. No. 2 Clemson”

- Mark Schlabach, ESPN

With the bevy of college bowl games and postsesason matchups starting on Dec. 17, there are sure to be entertaining games that are filled with exciting plays and the like. But if you were to rank all of the games in terms of the most entertaining? Ohio State and Clemson meeting in the College Football Playoff has to top the list. The Buckeyes and Tigers clash for a spot in the national championship game. The winner will play either Alabama or Washington (listed as the second most entertaining game on this list).

Both Ohio State and Clemson enter the game with two great quarterbacks in J.T. Barrett and Deshaun Watson. Both were Heisman Trophy candidates at the start of the season and though Watson was the only one of the two invited to New York, Barrett has proven to be one of the best statistical quarterbacks in Ohio State history. There’s also the matter of two heavyweight head coaches facing off with Urban Meyer and Dabo Swinney. The two previously met in the Orange Bowl following the 2013 season, where Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins help upend an Ohio State team that nearly made the national championship game.

“Both Elflein and Hooker were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press on Monday, meaning both are considered consensus All-Americans by the NCAA.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ohio State center Pat Elflein and safety Malik Hooker were named first-team All-Americans on Monday after both having great years individually. Elflein made the move from guard to center and flourished as he looked to improve his draft stock over the course of the season and help get Ohio State back into the College Football Playoff. Hooker, meanwhile, took only one playing season to make it to All-American status. Hooker started at safety for the Buckeyes and was a ball hawk all season long.

In total, Hooker accounted for six interceptions this season with three of those being returned for touchdowns. Hooker has quickly become one of the most feared safeties in college football as just a sophomore. His athleticism stands out as one of his best attributes and it helped solidify an already strong secondary for the Buckeyes. Elflein was also named the 2016 Rimington Trophy award winner, given annually to the nation’s top center.

“[True Freshman All-Americans] DL: Nick Bosa, Ohio State”

- Tom Luginbill, ESPN

Another honor worth mentioning is Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa making ESPN’s True Freshman All-America team after a strong first-year performance. Like his older brother before him, Bosa exploded onto the scene in Columbus, finishing with five sacks and being selected to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He was a terror for much of the season for opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators, in a similar fashion to what Joey Bosa was for the Buckeyes. Now the younger Bosa will get to showcase his talent against Clemson with the country watching on the College Football Playoff stage.

Bosa will look to continue to rise in his young career at Ohio State. Two more years will for sure follow this season and if you’re Urban Meyer, you’re thankful there was another Bosa coming through Columbus. Nick will have his work cut out for him next season as well, as he continues to impress across the board.

The Bucks will kickoff on a Thursday.

The Ohio State Buckeyes 2017 schedule was slated to kickoff on Saturday, September 2 against the Indiana Hoosiers, but today, the school announced that the season-opener would be moved to Thursday, August 31.

A time and TV network was not announced, but the game will be on 97.1 The Fan, per usual. The 2017 opener will be the third season-opener on a Thursday, with the first being in 1997 against Wyoming, and again in 2010 against Marshall. The last time the Buckeyes had a non-Saturday opener was just last season, when the Bucks played Virginia Tech on Labor Day.

The Buckeyes and Hoosiers have played a pair of interesting games the past two seasons, and we may have a third to open next season. It should be noted that Ohio State is 12-0 when opening against Big Ten teams.

The game will be played at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, and will serve as a Buckeyes warmup for when they welcome the Oklahoma Sooners to Columbus on September 9.

For Buckeye fans, it was a year chock full of presents.

Perhaps the least controversial thing you could say about 2016 is that it was, in fact, a year. And with the year’s end—and possibly the world’s end—quickly approaching, it’s officially the 2016 holiday season.

Ohio State fans got a lot of great gifts in the last 12 months, and there’s no better time of year to review all those presents. Let’s dive in.

Feed Zeke forever and ever, amen

On the very first day of the year, Ezekiel Elliott treated Buckeye fans to an absolute spectacle in what would be his last game in the Scarlet and Gray. Zeke ran roughshod over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl (lol) to the tune of four touchdowns and 179 yards from scrimmage.

It was a fitting end to the college career of one of Ohio State’s best ever. It was also incredibly bittersweet: if Zeke had got half as many touches against Michigan State a few weeks earlier, the Buckeyes probably would’ve earned a playoff berth.

Regardless, it nicely foreshadowed an NFL debut that set the league on fire. Through 14 weeks, Elliott leads all players in rushing yards by a comfortable margin, and he’s found the end zone 12 times on the ground. He’s the putative favorite for Rookie of the Year, and even MVP doesn’t sound laughable at this point.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Joey Bosa also played his final game as a Buckeye on January 1, though his time on the field was considerably shorter than Zeke’s. Midway through the first quarter, Bosa was ejected for targeting, thanks to a hit on Irish QB Deshone Kizer in which Bosa led with the crown of his helmet.

EkBnLjd.jpg

Artist’s rendering of the Bosa hit.

Three months later, Bosa found himself the third-overall selection in the NFL Draft despite a final college season that didn’t quite match the dizzying heights he reached as a sophomore. When he held out from San Diego Chargers training camp this summer over a contract dispute, the internet got ready to ordain him as the league’s next high-profile bust.

That, uhhh, hasn’t happened. Bosa has adjusted to the speed and sophistication of the NFL with seeming ease, terrorizing opposing offensive lines all season despite all those missed practices and all the knocks on his technique. He has 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble on the year so far.

Clay Travis: Ohio State made CFP instead of Penn State because of brand https://t.co/IQYNY5owZZ pic.twitter.com/FDWkngU6Dk

— Ohio State Buckeyes (@Buckeyes) December 5, 2016

Because Clay Travis schadenfreude is the gift that keeps on giving.

Curtis Samuel, if you need him

At the beginning of the 2014 season, Curtis Samuel was challenging Ezekiel Elliott for carries in the Buckeye backfield. Zeke ran away with the competition after a few games and never looked back, but all that potential inside Samuel had to go somewhere.

No. 4 eventually converted to H-back in the Ohio State offense, and you’d be hard-pressed to find many more versatile playmakers in college football than the gritty 2016 Curtis Samuel reboot. The Buckeye offense’s ups and downs this season seemed to directly correlate to the number of touches Samuel got in a given week; when he was getting fed regularly, they lit up the scoreboard, but when he wasn’t involved, the wheels pretty much fell off.

(Given this season’s trajectory, could it have been anyone else that delivered the final backbreaking blow against Michigan?)

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?
The Game

Speaking of Michigan...this year’s iteration of The Game was better than just about any of us deserved (except maybe America’s Sweetheart, Orlando Pace, who happened to be in attendance.) There was so much on the line, and despite each team’s hiccups, it had felt like a playoff berth collision course pretty much all season.

For Buckeye fans, the game went from feeling like an unpleasant dentist appointment to feeling like being locked in a room with a literal wolverine who’s high on angel dust in a relatively short span of time. This one had everything: two missed field goals! Jabrill Peppers’ first career interception! Jim Harbaugh throwing equipment! J.T. Barrett first-half yips and late-game heroics! A spot that was most definitely good! And when Curtis Samuel bounced into the end zone, triumphant, his jubilation seemed like nothing compared to ours.
