The Ohio State great was one of a number of ex-Bucks in action.

The NFL postseason is no longer an option for several former Ohio State players, but as the playoff picture begins to fill in, there will still be a decent load of Buckeyes playing for their chance at a Super Bowl. In Week 15, and with only two more weeks to play in the regular season, a few Buckeyes suited up on Saturday for the first time since college, and others continue to make strides in their careers.

‘Saturday Night Football’

It doesn’t happen often, but once the college football season is over, the NFL utilizes the open slate on Saturday for one of their games. This week’s Saturday night matchup was the New York Jets (Darron Lee, Jalin Marshall, Devin Smith) against the Miami Dolphins — the Jets suffered another loss, 13-34.

Adding four more total tackles to his rookie season, linebacker Darron Lee has been effective in his first year in the league. After Week 15, Lee has 59 total tackles — 38 solo — 1.0 sacks and 3 stuffs for 10 yards. He’ll be a big factor for the Jets defense heading into next season, and will be used to replace some of the aging factors.

Devin Smith has yet to see any offensive snaps or targets in just his second game back from IR. He’s seen some time on special teams — an area he struggled last season -- and will at least get some game experience under his belt before finally heading into the offseason healthy. Next season could be a make or break year for the wideout.

Jalin Marshall was inactive this week, after finally being removed from the injury report. The rookie missed the last two games following a concussion. Ready to go just a day before the Week 15 night game, the team chose to keep him on the sideline.

What rookie wall?

A few weeks ago, Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott was asked post-game if he was worried about hitting a wall late in the season -- like some rookies do. Zeke quipped he didn’t believe in a rookie wall, and proved it in Week 15, with a season best game in a ‘Sunday Night Football’ win over Tampa Bay.

With more than enough experience in primetime games with several Dallas games flexing to SNF, Zeke was right at home under the lights. He rushed for a career-best 159 yards and a touchdown — which was followed by a celebration that included the Buckeye and a large Salvation Army donation bucket.

The rookie was the early top-recipient of votes for the Pro Bowl and has already surpassed numerous franchise and league records. With two weeks left in the regular season, Elliott has amassed 1,551 rushing yards (351 receiving) and 13 rushing touchdowns. He has always excelled at getting to the next level of the defense with breakout runs, like this 42-yard burner from Sunday.

He also continued to prove he has some of the best hurdling skills in the league -- with a little thanks to his Mom, the college track star.

No more Nuuuuuge

The Cincinnati Bengals finally cut ties with legendary Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent after a missed field goal and point after attempt against the Browns. It was no surprise the team was going to move on after the kicker’s mediocre season, which saw a dramatic increase in missed kicks, but a midseason cut wasn’t expected.

The 34-year-old missed only 11 extra points in his entire 12-season career, but six of those were in 2016 — second worst in the NFL. Nugent was taken in the second round of the 2005 draft by the New York Jets, and settled with the Bengals in 2010, making up the majority of his tenure in the league. His Week 14 game against Cleveland could be the last of his career.

Small milestones

Tight end Jeff Heuerman (Broncos) missed his entire rookie season and has been slow to jump into Denver’s offense. After a string of games without any targets, he saw four Sunday, catching two for a career-high 40 yards.

Defensive back Vonn Bell (Saints) has been consistent his rookie season, contributing between three and nine total tackles a game. Sunday against the Cardinals, he tied his career-high with nine total tackles — seven solo — and one forced fumble. He has 76 total tackles, 1.0 sacks and two forced fumbles so far this season.

Plays of the week

Michael Thomas

The rookie receiver has been a huge asset to the Saints his first year in the league and is expected to do big things. After a week of limited practice due to a foot injury, Thomas went on to snag 52 receiving yards and a touchdown. He continues to remind people why they say, “You can’t guard Mike”.

Ryan Shazier

The Steelers ended up squashing the hopes of Bengal fans everywhere with a win over their division rival on Sunday. Shazier was a critical factor, especially with him teammates going down and out with injuries all day. He came up big in the second half with a sack — giving him 3.5 sacks on the seasons.

— Blitzburgh (@Steel_Curtain4) December 18, 2016

Joey Bosa

Just a week after a scary neck injury knocked the rookie defensive end out, the rookie was back to doing what he does best — sacking quarterbacks. Bosa now has 7.5 sacks on the season and 31 total tackles.

Other notes

  • The Carolina Panthers (Corey ‘Philly’ Brown, Kurt Coleman, Ted Ginn Jr., Andrew Norwell) are headed to Washington for this week’s Monday Night Football matchup.
  • This was not a good week for Buckeyes with injuries as three more were added to IR. Braxton Miller (shoulder), Jack Mewhort (knee), and Mike Adams (back) now join Cam Heyward (pectoral) and Nick Mangold (ankle) on the sideline for the rest of the season.
  • Linebacker James Laurinaitis was waived off IR last month by the Saints and had a workout earlier this week with the Kansas City Chiefs.
  • Tyvis Powell (Seahawks) and Cardale Jones (Bills) were both inactive this week. John Simon (Texans) is still out with a back injury, but is still trying to get back by Week 17.

The Buckeyes are in the mix for another top junior prospect.

On Friday, one of the most sought after prospects in not just the talent rich state of Texas, but the entire class of 2018 announced his leaders just days before he is scheduled to let the world know where he will play on Saturday afternoons.

With a Christmas Eve commitment date currently set, four-star safety Jordan Moore (Yoakum, TX / Yoakum) cut his list of around 30 scholarship offers to 10 programs. Now fighting for his pledge are Ohio State, Texas A&M, Texas, Houston, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Florida State and Michigan.

GOD BLESS! pic.twitter.com/ZoukZWgYgu

— Jordan moore✨ (@Jo_moore2) December 17, 2016

Yet to make it up to Columbus from the Yoakum, Texas area, Moore had a chance to watch Ohio State runaway to a big victory over Oklahoma earlier this season.

“I loved it. Ohio State is really good and Oklahoma is also. I really loved how Ohio state chunks the ball deep and the defense played good,” the 5-foot-11, 170-pound standout stated to Land-Grant Holy Land soon after the Buckeyes defeated the Sooners, 45-24, in September.

It isn’t out of the question for a recruit to commit to a program without visiting, but at this time it doesn’t look like the Buckeyes will pull out a shocker, with many believing he will stay closer to home in the Southwest.

Jordan isn’t the only D1 prospect in his family. His twin brother, Joshua, is also a heavily recruited athlete with scholarship offers on the table from Ohio State and many other top notch schools.

When it comes to rankings the twins find their names among some of the best to play on the high school level. Jordan is currently pegged as the 14th safety, and 162nd overall prospect, while his brother is considered the eighth wide receiver, and 60th soon-to-be senior in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Quick Hits

  • In front of nearly 10,000 fans, future Buckeye offensive guard Wyatt Davis helped block his St. John Bosco (CA) squad to a California state championship on Saturday. Opening holes all game long, the Braves picked up over 500 yards of total offense thanks to Davis, and the rest of the big boys up front. The 56-33 win over De La Salle gave Bosco their second open division title in the last four years.
  • Just like offensive lineman Tyler Gerald, and current OSU commits Marcus Williamson and Isaiah Pryor did, a potential Buckeye will make the move to IMG Academy (FL) to finish off his high school career. Four-star offensive tackle Verdis Brown is the latest prospect to announce he will play for the powerhouse program next season. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound Illinois native holds offers from the likes of Ohio State, Florida State, LSU, Michigan State, Mississippi State and Oklahoma to name a few.

As the big day inches closer, we all as fans tend to get overly anxious for any material pertaining to our team. We are a little over 11 days away from the College Football Playoff Semi Final matchup with the Clemson Tigers, and it cannot come any sooner. Last time around, I wrote about the matchups at the Quarterback and the Running Back positions. This week, I will examine the Wide Receivers and the Tight Ends. Without these three positions, the Quarterbacks and the Running Backs will have a difficult time getting things going. This matchup will be determined by both teams ability to move the ball early and often, but it will lean on the Offensive Line and their ability to protect their signal caller and control the line of scrimmage.

Wide Receivers:

Clemson has four able bodied and proven Wide Receivers that could make the big plays. That is what makes Clemson’s offense so potent and dangerous, and this will be Ohio State’s biggest and most difficult challenge to contain. They all contain the perfect blend of size, skill and speed, and with that, they will square off against one of the top defenses in the nation.

Mike Williams:

MIKE-WILLIAMS-CLEMSON.png
Mike Williams is the biggest playmaker that the Tigers have in their arsenal. He stands at 6-3 and 225 lbs and he is a threat whenever he steps on the field. He leads all receivers on the roster with 84 total catches for 1171 yards. Williams is averaging 13.9 yards per catch and he has a total of 10 receiving touchdowns. His longest catch for a score is 50-yards. Judging by the game logs for this year, he tends to disappear during some stretches of the game, but then he makes an impactful play that turns the tide for his team. He has the speed to separate from defenders, while being an able and willing lead blocker for his teammates. He will most likely draw Ohio State’s best Defensive Back Gareon Conley, due to his game breaking ability. Gareon Conley is no slouch either, and the matchup between the two will be one of many great matchups to watch, as both teams try to advance to the Championship Game against either Alabama or Washington.

Deon Cain:

DEON-CANE-CLEMSON.png
Deon Cain is another playmaker. that when given the opportunity, he can hurt you with his speed and his playmaking ability. Cain is listed as 6-1, 210 lbs, but he plays fast all the time. For this season, he has racked up 621 yards and 9 total touchdowns. He has 32 catches and he is averaging 19.4 yards per catch, and he like Williams is a big play waiting to happen. His longest catch for a score is 65-yards as he had a field day against Syracuse. He ended that game with 5 catches for 125-yards and 2 touchdowns. Cain will also get the attention from another talented defender, Marshon Lattimore, who is Ohio State’s other starting Cornerback. Another enticing matchup between two more talented NFL prospects, and a lot is on the line in this game. Each team will look for an edge, in was is easily the most exciting matchup because it is unpredictable and NFL caliber players are spread out between both teams.

Artavis Scott:

ARTAVIS-SCOTT-CLEMSON.jpg
Artavis Scott isn’t too far behind Cain, statistic wise as he has 592-yards receiving and 5 touchdowns catches. The statistic that separates Cain and Scott is their catch numbers as Scott more than doubled Cain’s output with 71 catches for the season. Scott is averaging 8.3 yards per catch and has a long of 28-yards. Scott is listed as 5-10, 190 lbs, but he the ability to make tough catches in between defenders. His role will vary, but he will look for his opportunities to make a play and an impact. Scott will draw the Nickel Back in Denzel Ward. Ward tends to bust plays and this matchup certainly does not favor the Buckeyes, but it certainly favors Clemson. They will look to take advantage of the inexperience and Ward’s lack of consistency. We will just have to wait and see how things develop after bowl practice concludes. This will most likely be the matchup to watch and I have a sneaky suspicion that Scott will be used on jet sweeps and gadget plays because it is apparently Ohio State’s weakness of defense.

Trevion Thompson:

TREVION-THOMPSON-CLEMSON.png
Trevion Thompson is an under-the-radar Wide Receiver that has potential to impact the game for Clemson. He doesn’t have the eye-popping stats as the other receiver, but he will make his presence felt when given an opportunity. He is 6-2, 200 lbs and he registered 11 receptions for 108-yards for a single touchdown. He is averaging 9.8 yards per catch and he has a long of 25-yards. For some reason, I think that he will be used in the jet sweep role as well. There isn’t that much film on him, so it is unknown at this point of what Clemson has planned for him or the Ohio State Defense. I am sure they will have a lot of back-up plans and contingencies, but for now, Thompson cannot be forgotten. On Defense, he will matchup with Ward, Arnette or depending on how bad things goes, another unknown playmaker can make the best out of his opportunity.

Curtis Samuel:

Curtis-Samuel.png
Curtis Samuel is the engine oil for the Ohio State Offense. He is the playmaker that will most likely see double-teams throughout the duration of the game because defenses would be stupid to leave him in single coverage. Samuel is listed as being 5-11, 197 lbs, but he play much bigger than he really is. Samuel accounts for a huge percentage of the Ohio State Offense. He has caught 65 passes for 822 yards and 7 touchdowns. He is averaging 12.6 yards per catch and has a long of 79-yards. He has rushed the ball a total of 91 times for 704 yards and 8 touchdowns and he is averaging 7.4 yards per attempt with a season long of 74 yards. He is the only consistent playmaker that the Buckeyes have on its roster and he is the only player who is able to consistently beat the coverage to find soft spots in the defense. J.T. Barrett will look early and often to get him involved, but that will be a battle because the playmakers on the front seven will look to blitz a ton to disrupt the rhythm. The Clemson Defensive Backs are constantly on islands, just like the Ohio State Defensive Backs, but a lot will lean on the ability to beat the blitz and make the correct pass in rhythm and while under duress. Clemson will look to force the ball away from Samuel.

Noah Brown:

Noah-Brown.png

Noah Brown, the hero from the Oklahoma game will be needed during this game, especially in the red zone. Brown is 6-2, 218 lbs and he is a monster in the red zone area. He isn’t as consistent as Samuel, but he plays an integral role within the offense. He is the strongest receiver on the roster and he has shown what he is capable of. He always fights for the ball and if he is not in the correct position, he will bat the ball away as a defender to give his Quarterback another shot to make up for it. Ever since the Oklahoma game, Brown has been an afterthought as he isn’t given as many opportunities as of late. Brown has 30 catches for 385 yards and 7 touchdowns. He is averaging 12.8 yards per catch and he has a long of 37 yards. He will look to regain the Oklahoma role and re-establish himself as a playmaker for the Buckeyes. The Clemson Defensive Backs aren’t as strong as the Buckeyes, but they are crafty defenders who will take the ball away when get a chance to. Brown will be look to beat them as J.T. Barrett evades the blitz.

Dontre Wilson:

Dontre-Wilson.png
Dontre Wilson is just like Brown as he has also been the forgotten man within the offensive game plan. Wilson is listed as being 5-10, 195 lbs and he can be relied upon to make timely catches during crunch time. We saw this against top-tier competition and he will make a bid to complete his collegiate career as a champion. Wilson has 27 catches for 352 yards and 5 touchdowns. He is averaging 13.0 yards per game and has a long of 43. He has been hampered by injuries this season, but he is finally healthy enough to be a part of the offensive attack that Urban Meyer and his staff are planning to implement against Clemson. Wilson used to be the primary punt returner, but his mistakes took those duties away from him. Wilson will have to find other ways to impact the game and make a big play. He needs to get open and hope that the blitz doesn’t take Barrett’s eyes off of him.

K.J. Hill:

K.J. Hill has been coming on as of late as he is nearly tripled his output from last season. Hill is my sleeper for this game because he has dependable hands and he has shown flashes of becoming the playmaker that Barrett needs outside of Samuel, Brown and Wilson. He will be out there to move the chains during key 3rd downs. Hill has 17 catches for 254 yards and a touchdown. He is averaging 11.2 yards per catch and he has a season long of 47 yards. He has the ability to sneak past defenders, make tough catches and most importantly block along the perimeter. His stats may not seem like something right now, but I have a feeling he will have a huge day come game day. Samuel will try to maintain the numbers that he usually gets, but Hill will be there to move the chains.

Tight Ends:

The Tight End matchup is in favor of Clemson. They have a dynamic receiving threat who is capable of breaking the doors down and making plays. The Tight End for Clemson also is a huge part of the Tigers’ Offensive attack, but don’t discount the value of Ohio State’s Tight End. Recently, he has been given opportunities to break the mold to become a part of the Buckeye Offense. It is just a matter of completing the catches and making key conversions.

Jordan Leggett:

Jordan Leggett stands at 6-5, 260 lbs and he is a receiving threat at Tight End. He is Clemson’s second leading receiver with 38 catches for 637 yards and 7 touchdowns. He is averaging 16.8 yards per catch and he has a season long of 56 yards. A receiving Tight End who can break open and run the open field. He is a one of the many dangerous weapons that the Tigers have in their arsenal. The Silver Bullets will look to negate his impact, but it will be a tough matchup for them as they look to shut down at least one position of concern. Leggett is having the best season of his collegiate career as he looks to move up in draft boards.

Marcus Baugh:

Marcus Baugh certainly hasn’t lived up to his high school rankings as he was lost in the shuffle behind Nick Vannett and Jeff Heuerman. He came to Ohio State from Riverside, California and he has recently found a role within the offense. Although his numbers aren’t eye-popping, he has managed to reel in 24 catches for 269 yards and 2 scores. He is averaging 11.2 yards per catch and has a season long of 29 yards. He has been dinged up lately, but he has found a role making key catches for first downs and as a blocker. He will be shifted a lot and he will be asked to block incoming Line Backers coming on blitzes. He will be leaned upon on obvious passing plays because Samuel will likely be double or triple teamed constantly throughout the contest. Baugh will work within the seams and look to gain huge chunks of yardage. He has been known to make the difficult catches and he could also hurdle over unsuspecting defenders. He is a dual threat Tight End that needs to show up during game day. He needs to get the younger teammates ready for what could be a difficult matchup that isn’t in their favor.

How many points to beat Clemson?

The magic number might be 35:

OHIO STATE CAN GET REVENGE FOR A LOST RECORD IN THEIR REMATCH AGAINST CLEMSON

78235_h.jpg,qitok=JAkPbzIC.pagespeed.ce.7EZwrrD3Qc.jpg

In general, it's not a good thing to get sentimental about most of the random stuff we try to hold on to forever.

Yeah, the car you've had since high school might be the location of the first time you made out with tongues, but you're also going to try and drive in the snow in like two weeks and your 2001 Chevy Cavalier's lack of functional ABS brakes will kill you dead faster than you can say "black ice."

This is the tyranny of things; an attachment to items that have no real functional value in our lives, but we hang on to anyway out of habit. It's better to realize that all things are finite, with an expiration date that should be followed once it comes up.

Or, alternatively, screw that! Some things are sacred, and I will be mad about losing them until the day I die. And one of those inevitably doomed yet still horribly missed things in my life is the greatest statistical record in college football history.

BEFORE THE 2014 ORANGE BOWL AGAINST CLEMSON, OHIO STATE WAS 279-0-1 ALL TIME IN GAMES IN WHICH THEY HAD SCORED 35 OR MORE POINTS.

That ridiculous statistic was more than just my go-to factoid when I wanted to sound like I know something about football to strangers, it was a mathematically and logically insane thing to contemplate. A football team accomplishing that over many, many decades of effort is somewhere on the same level of likelihood as you waking up every morning for the better part of a year at exactly 6:48 in the morning.

The best part of the record is that it wasn't the result of a hot streak that lasted a season or two, it wasn't the byproduct of one really good coach, and while it wasn't accomplished with Ohio State playing in a particularly offensively-minded conference, it also spoke to the tradition of excellent defense played by the Buckeyes.

It implied a lot of other things as well (namely, that Ohio State is awesome), but ultimately it was just really cool to know that if your team got to five touchdowns in a game, they were essentially guaranteed to win.

Their lone non-win in a game in which they scored 35 points or more came in a 1978 tie against SMU, which is truly one of the most hilariously aggravating box scores I have ever seen in my entire life. Art Schlichter threw more interceptions (four) than completions (three), and the Buckeyes gave up over 340 yards of passing. Here is the box score if you're feeling particularly masochistic, but long story short: it sucked.

That game was, probably not coincidentally, part of the last season of football that Woody Hayes would ever coach as he got himself fired for punching a – wait for it – Clemson player in a bowl game.

So maybe it's fitting that Clemson ruined everything. The following is the lone, sad mention of it in Ohio State's game notes after the Orange Bowl:

Under Dabo Swinney, the Tigers have reached college football’s elite.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opened this week and is already filling Disney’s coffers, banking a tick over $71 million on its Friday opening alone, the third-biggest opening day of 2016.

***We interrupt this column to bring you live coverage of Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy at Disney headquarters.

Early reports on the film itself are mostly positive, a sunny development for fans of the franchise. Any Star Wars movie that Disney cranks out is going to be a money machine, but the critical success of the first standalone film eases up pressure on the upcoming spin-offs on Han Solo and the rumored flick surrounding Boba Fett, the infamous bounty hunter.

If Rogue One is looked upon favorably, it will encourage Disney and Lucasfilm to continue to take risks and step out of their comfort zone, something they were clearly reluctant to do in The Force Awakens. (Though after prequels flopped in the eyes of critics, it’s hard to blame Kennedy & Co.)

Now, let’s talk football and rank stuff!

1. Ohio State’s ability to disguise its QB-run game

SB Nation’s Ian Boyd wrote an engaging piece this week about how the Buckeyes cloak their intention to use J.T. Barrett to plow the ball down their opponent’s throats back into the Stone Age by creating various looks that appear like surefire pass-first formations.

As Boyd noted, the Buckeyes will line up in three wide receiver sets all the time, giving the appearance of a pass play to the untrained eye. In one instance against Oklahoma, the Sooners covered Dontre Wilson, the slot receiver, even though Wilson was ineligible to receive a pass because he was on the same side of the field with two other wideouts who were lined up on the line of scrimmage.

This constant mixing and matching of formations is often an elaborate veil to A) create a simple numbers advantage and B) conceal Urban Meyer and Ohio State’s desire to use Barrett as a 222-pound battering ram.

As long as the Buckeyes can get away with this near-sorcery, don’t expect them to suddenly whip the ball around the field in the air.

2. Dabo Dabo Do

Clemson’s first three full years under Dabo Swinney: 25-16.

Clemson under Swinney since: 58-9.

How’s Dabo done it? Upping the Tigers’ recruiting efforts, and getting the most out of that talent.

The average ranking (per 247Sports) of the last five recruiting classes put together by Tommy Bowden (Swinney’s predecessor) was 20.8. Somehow, Bowden brought in the 46th-ranked class in the country in 2004; the other four classes were ranked between 10th and 18th.

Swinney has kicked things up a notch (especially recently) as his last five full classes —which excludes his current 10th-ranked class — have averaged a ranking of 13.4. And not only is Swinney roping in higher-caliber talent, he’s getting the most out of it.

For the second year in a row, the Tigers are in the College Football Playoff despite ranking outside of the top five in 247Sports’ composite talent rankings. Clemson is 10th this year, and reached the national title game a year ago after coming in 13th in the composite talent rankings.

Clemson is a recruiting factory, but history shows it’s hasn’t been able to recruit at the level of an Alabama (duh), but also programs like Ohio State, LSU, Florida State, Southern Cal, Michigan, Notre Dame, and a handful of other SEC programs (depending on the year). But that’s hasn’t stopped Clemson from getting players drafted; in early August, 45 ex-Tigers were in NFL camps, up from the previous program record of 37 set in 2015.

Swinney may not have an ear for football’s social issues, e.g. his tone-deaf comments on Colin Kaepernick and the issue of paying players (#soybeanwind), but the guy can coach.

Clemson was really good when they outlasted Ohio State 40-35 in the 2014 Orange Bowl; they’re better now.

3. Making Michigan sweat

Donovan Peoples-Jones was long thought to be a heavy Michigan lean, and the nation’s top-ranked wide receiver ended up choosing to continue his football career in Ann Arbor after he announced his decision on national television Thursday night.

But, there was some “smoke” (as the recruitniks say) over the past week or so that Peoples-Jones — who attends high school at Cass Tech in Detroit, the alma mater of three current Buckeyes, Mike Weber, Damon Webb, and Joshua Alabi — may be having a change of heart. Otherwise, why would Urban Meyer and Kerry Coombs messed with Mother Nature last weekend when they ventured to Detroit in a snowstorm to visit the five-star WR?

The smoke turned out to be exactly that. But it seems like Ohio State’s coaches didn’t exactly make life easy for Michigan.

4. Torrance Gibson’s forgettable tenure in Columbus

In the days leading up to the onset of Ohio State’s 2016 season, the quarterback-turned-receiver was suspended by the university for the fall semester for a violation of university’s student code of conduct. (Meyer disagreed with the university’s decision to suspend Gibson.)

Now, it appears Gibson’s career as a Buckeye will end before he ever appears in a game.

Earlier this week, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tweeted a graphic declaring that Gibson had signed his letter of intent (as a QB) with the school; Gibson denied that he’s set on attending a JUCO. It’s within the rules for Gibson, a redshirt freshman, to sign with a JUCO and still try to re-enroll at Ohio State, but the writing appears on the wall.

Hopefully the former four-star recruit can find whatever path works for him in the near future, even if it isn’t in Columbus.

5. Winter

A recap of Saturday’s weather in Cincinnati:

  • Single digits in the morning.
  • Torrential downpour in the afternoon/evening.
  • Single digits near midnight.

Go away, winter.
