Good to see the former Buckeye running wild through the NFL honors.

"Just to be able to come into this league my first year and dominate and just play at the level I'm playing, and just kind of get these honors already as a rookie, it means a lot.”

Ezekiel Elliott, as reported by Barry Wilner (Associated Press)

With the regular season now wrapped up and playoff football starting this weekend, it’s now time to dish out the season awards. The Associated Press unveiled their All-Pro team, and with little surprise, former Ohio State Buckeye Ezekiel Elliott made the list.

The Dallas Cowboy rookie led the league in rushing, and was instrumental in the Cowboys securing the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC. In addition to Elliott, four other Cowboys received votes for the All-Pro team — which makes sense as ‘America’s Team’ compiled a stunning 13-3 record, won the NFC East and clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

There were a couple of other Buckeyes that received votes, too. New England Patriots special team player and Team USA olympian Nate Ebner came within two votes of defeating teammate Matthew Slater for a spot on the All-Pro special teams unit. Slater had 14 votes, while Ebner had 12.

Even though he missed a handful of games at the beginning of the season, Joey Bosa received one vote for edge pass rusher. That category was stacked with talent, with Khalil Mack taking home the honors with a whopping 46 votes.

While Bosa only received one vote for the All-Pro team, he showed his ability to be a dominate force in the NFL for years to come.

“He did not tease pass-rush ability; he pressured and sacked quarterbacks too consistently to tease. He did not give glimpses against the run; too often, he set the edge while tying for the NFL lead with 17 tackles for loss.”

Michael Gehlken on Joey Bosa (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Bosa may not have gotten on the All-Pro team, but he will be a heavy favorite for the AP’s Rookie Defensive Player of the Year award. The résumé Bosa amassed during the 2016 campaign is worthy enough for him to claim the honor — and make him the third San Diego Charger to bring home the award.

Missing four games due to a hamstring injury, Bosa hit a double-digit sack total (10.5) and tied the lead for tackles for loss (17). For a rookie, the 10.5 sacks registered is in-between the two other Chargers that won the rookie of the year honor. Shawne Merriman had 10 sacks and Leslie O’Neal had 12.5. If the former Buckeye didn’t miss the beginning part of the season, then it would be a safe assumption to believe that Bosa would’ve eclipsed O’Neal’s 12.5 record.

Against the Kansas City Chiefs, Michael Gehlken broke down some of the plays that pointed to the fact that Joey Bosa has arrived on the NFL scene.

These 4 plays from Chargers DE Joey Bosa came in 5-snap span Sunday. As a rookie, he arrived. https://t.co/hkmFVhrFk9 pic.twitter.com/dLGEtKmzoe

— Michael Gehlken (@sdutGehlken) January 6, 2017

Even though the Chargers will have a new coach for next season, don’t expect the Bosa train to stop anytime soon. Gehlken’s article cited now-former Chargers head coach Mike McCoy saying that Bosa “is somebody who absolutely loves to play the game”.

“A few announcements remain, and there will likely be one or two more departures. However, Ohio State remains in great shape overall. The Buckeyes already had a small senior class, and they won’t lose too many underclassmen.”

Ryan Ginn, Landof10.com

Between Elliott and Bosa, they were two Buckeyes who left college early and became instant successes in the NFL. In the hallmark 2016 class that departed Ohio State, new faces emerged and became playmakers under the spotlight. Now, with under two weeks until the underclassman declaration deadline for the NFL, the Bucks seem to have lost talent – but not like last year.

In fact, the Buckeyes are fine; actually, they are more than fine.

Ryan Ginn of Landof10.com broke down the situation Ohio State faces next year in terms of what faces will still be in Columbus. Right now, quarterback J.T. Barrett and offensive lineman Billy Price are set to return to the team. One the other side of the ball, Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis highlight the silver bullet defense.

At this time last year, there was almost an identity crisis on what the future of Buckeye football would be like. The 2016 campaign featured almost an entirely new team, and yet, the Buckeyes marched through the regular season with an 11-1 record and found themselves in the College Football Playoff for the second time in three seasons.

There are still a few Buckeyes who need to make their decision on whether or not to stay or go to the NFL, but, as Ginn pointed out in his article, the Buckeyes already won the offseason by not having a complete overhaul on both sides of the ball.

Combined with arguably the best recruiting class in OSU history, the Buckeyes should be alright for another playoff run next season.

We discuss a busy week for Ohio State football on our latest podcast.

It’s no secret that for the last two seasons, Ohio State has struggled to find the balance and explosiveness on offense that made them so deadly during their National Championship run in 2014. With the hires of Ryan Day and Kevin Wilson, expect that to change in 2017.

On this edition of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt and Colton are back to discuss all of the changes to the offensive coaching staff, and why they think J.T. Barrett stands to have a huge senior season because of it. (Hint: one of them thinks Barrett will at least be a Heisman finalist). They also break down the changes from a myriad of angles, including:

  • Tim Beck’s tenure at Ohio State, and whether or not it’s fair to call it a failure
  • Being a bit uncomfortable with the Kevin Wilson hire, and why Gene Smith and Urban Meyer need to address what happened with him at Indiana
  • Why Dwayne Haskins stands to benefit greatly, even if he isn’t the starting quarterback
  • Projecting the battles at wide receiver heading into next season, and the importance of Binjimen Victor

To wrap it up, they also break down Tyquan Lewis’ decision to come back for his senior season, and Colton quickly explains why he thinks next year’s team is a national title favorite.

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we strongly encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The more we hear from you, the better we can make it. We’re also on Soundcloud, the SB Nation podcast page, and you can subscribe via RSS on your Android and Windows Phone devices here.

FIESTA BOWL DEBACLE CAPPED A TWO-YEAR OFFENSIVE SLIDE FORCING URBAN MEYER'S HAND TO MAKE CHANGES

78944_h.jpg,qitok=IDvqhlh5.pagespeed.ce.kPug11TzcM.jpg

Hopefully you've made it through the 12 stages of grief following the beatdown Ohio State suffered at the hands of Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal.

It's never fun watching your favorite squad get embarrassed on national television but in hindsight, a blowout was the best case scenario if the Buckeyes had to lose because it forced Urban Meyer to take decisive action.

If Ohio State lost a tight game, say 17-14, yet the offense still produced maybe one lone touchdown via great field position handed to it by the defense, Meyer might have been content in trying to polish a turd.

Instead, a 31-point shellacking had him bringing in a new quarterback coach, canning the existing one (or opting to let him walk depending on what you choose to believe), and likely bringing in Kevin Wilson as the new offensive coordinator leaving incumbent Ed Warinner twisting in the wind.

And all of that unfolded in about four days.

The Big Ten Is Irrelevant - Again

4 of the B1G's losses were by 1, 2, 3, and 6 points.

I think the bigger potential issue is if there's a debate over a CFP selection. Sure the Buckeyes won the first ever CFP, but B1G teams have gotten ass raped in the semifinals two straight years which could swing an undecided voter or two.

Of course, money will always be part of the equation. But getting slaughtered on the biggest stage is never a good thing.

Despite a passing game that sputtered at the wrong time, there was a lot to like from Ohio State’s offense this season.

Mike Weber is really, really good.

Weber’s first season as Ohio State’s featured running back didn’t end as perfectly as Ezekiel Elliott’s, but it’s still hard to be anything but ecstatic about the redshirt freshman’s performance this year:

zeka_and_weber.jpg

All in all, Weber became just the third freshman in program history to top 1,000 yards, and he did it while averaging a strong 6.0 yards per carry. He also showed a willingness to block that has become a staple from any starting running back at Ohio State. Weber’s combination of speed and power should be put to good use behind new-Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, who orchestrated massive seasons from star NFL running backs Tevin Coleman and Jordan Howard during his time at Indiana.

Urban Meyer still doesn’t care much for featuring tight ends.

Folks were calling for a Marcus Baugh breakout-season after his great performance in the spring game, but Meyer’s history with tight ends indicated that Baugh would likely not meet his lofty statistical expectations. Sure enough, he finished the year with fewer than 300 receiving yards and just two touchdowns.

This is in no way an indictment on Baugh’s ability as a tight end; he’s a fantastic talent:

His two touchdowns this season were two more than all Ohio State tight end’s scored in 2015. Last season, Nick Vannett caught just 19 passes for 162 yards and didn’t score a touchdown ... yet he was selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft and was the third tight end off the board. There will be several NFL teams that could use a 6’5 255 pound tight end with Baugh’s abilities, especially with another season under his belt.

Holy hell, Curtis Samuel

We knew Samuel was good going into this season, but I don’t think anyone expected him to basically drag the Ohio State offense to an 11-2 record. J.T. Barrett and Weber were great in their own right, but it’s hard to think of another player in the country that was more feared than Samuel.

Urban Meyer’s never-ending search for a Percy Harvin clone has come to an end:

curtis_vs_percy.png

Sure, Harvin was more explosive, but the similarities are still startling. Samuel gained over 100 total yards or scored a touchdown during every game this season. That is remarkable. His highlights include:

  • Converting his 22 touches into 261 total yards and three touchdowns against Bowling Green in the season-opener.
  • Gaining 178 total yards and scoring two touchdowns against then-No. 10 ranked Nebraska.
  • Providing some of the lone offensive-sources of excitement against Penn State and Clemson.

But there’s no debate about what Samuel’s most-shining moment was. There’s a chance he returns for his senior season, but if not, thank you Curtis for one of the iconic moments of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry (special mention to this work of art):

The Slobs need some work, but there’s plenty of reason for optimism.

First of all, it’s not easy to replace 3/5 of an offensive line. With that said, the Buckeyes’ o-line needs some work. They were exposed against Michigan and Clemson, as they allowed a combined 11 sacks and averaged just 3.54 yards per carry.

It wasn’t all bad. Pat Elflein’s move to center couldn’t have gone better, as the senior captain was awarded the Rimington Trophy, annually awarded to the nation’s best center. Also guard Billy Price, a first-team All-American this season, will return for the 2017 season and will move to center.

The Buckeyes should also welcome back starters Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan and Isaiah Prince. While all will need to improve, the fact that the team can go into the 2017 season with 4/5 of their offensive line assured is great news. The end of the season left a sour taste in the mouths of many, but don’t forget this unit helped spark the nation’s No. 12 ranked rushing attack in yards per game.

The wide receivers need some work, but there is talent there

Noah Brown put on one of the most dominating displays by a wide receiver in Ohio State history during the Buckeyes’ trip to Norman:

His behind-the-back catch was almost undoubtedly the catch of the year, but he also came up big in clutch moments against Wisconsin and Michigan. Brown wasn’t as consistently involved in the offense as many would’ve hoped, but he still tied for the team lead in with seven touchdowns and finished second in receptions and yards.

The rest of the wide receivers had their ups and downs. Dontre Wilson capped off his career at Ohio State with a career-high six touchdowns. K.J. Hill showed flashes of becoming a go-to deep threat. Parris Campbell was electrifying as a returner and his blocking would’ve made Evan Spencer proud.

In the end, the unit didn’t make enough big plays or consistently create enough separation to make a difference down the stretch. Still, Michael Thomas and Devin Smith didn’t become marquee receivers over night, and the Buckeyes should welcome back the majority of their receivers in 2017. Keep an eye on rising-sophomore Binjimen Victor, who earned more playing time against Clemson and appears poised to be a playmaker.

The J.T. Barrett Experience

Yes, Barrett has regressed since his electric redshirt-freshman campaign that saw him finish fifth in the Heisman voting. But it’s pretty tough to make an argument that he isn’t already a top-three Ohio State quarterback of all-time and he showed plenty of reasons why this season.

Exhibit A: Wisconsin

Other than perhaps Oklahoma or Nebraska, the Wisconsin game was Barrett’s finest-game of 2016. He scored not one, but two go-ahead touchdowns against the Badgers in the fourth quarter or later. Despite these scores, it was a non-touchdown that I felt was possibly his greatest play of the game:

Facing a second-and-long from his own territory, Wisconsin dropped eight defenders in coverage which took away all of Barrett’s initial reads. He bought some time, reset his feet, and unleashed a gorgeous 45-plus yard throw that couldn’t have been placed better. Ohio State would tie the game with a field goal shortly after.

Exhibit B: Nebraska

Barrett picked apart the Corn Huskers, as he completed 26 of his 38 passes for 290 yards and four touchdowns. For at least one Saturday, the Buckeyes passing game was as explosive as they come, as five different receivers had receptions of 15-plus yards. Still, Barrett’s most memorable play came on a pass that traveled less than 10 yards in the air:

Barrett would later throw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Samuel on the first play of the second half and the route was on. 62-3 wins over top-10 opponents don’t come around very often and Barrett spearheaded the massacre.

Exhibit C: Michigan

Barrett is now 3-0 against the Wolverines and will look to become the first Buckeyes’ quarterback to ever go 4-0 against Michigan after he declared his intentions to return for his senior season. His performance during the 2016 edition of The Game wasn’t perfect, but he came through when it mattered and drove down the field twice during the fourth quarter to put Ohio State in a position to send the game to overtime.

Barrett’s best play came midway through the fourth quarter with the Buckeyes searching for any sort of offensive momentum. No stranger to embarrassing the great Jabrill Peppers, Barrett took off on a run straight down the throat of the Michigan defense and encountered the Wolverines’ premiere playmaker at mid-field. Barrett would step out of bounds at the Wolverines’ 22-yard line.

Oh yeah, and the spot was good, actually.

Tune in next week for our defensive takeaways from Ohio State’s 2016 season.

The Army All-American game is bringing out the best in future Buckeyes.

Ohio State fans around the country could use some more good news after the loss to Clemson last Saturday in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. The good news may be coming soon. How soon you ask? As soon as tomorrow at the U.S. Army All-American game in San Antonio where it looks as if the Buckeyes could see one or two commitments from a couple of the nation’s top remaining prospects. Good news has been flowing through the Columbus, Ohio air over the week with announcements from players returning, coaches filling roles and more may be coming — so hold steady Buckeye Nation, the future is bright in Columbus.

Oh look, OSU commits continue to shine

The Army All-American game will see a whole host of future Buckeyes tomorrow for the East-West match-up, but throughout the week at practice, the current Ohio State commits seemed to be near the spot light at all times. Which of course is completely understandable considering the players headed to and potentially headed to Columbus for 2017.

Two of the future Bucks to garner serious attention as usual were none other than defensive back commit, Shaun Wade and quarterback commit, Tate Martell. Two household names for sure, the defensive and offensive players of the year respectively have shown just why they are deserving of their many prestigious awards.

— #ArmyBowl (@ArmyAllAmerican) January 5, 2017

More names to impress yesterday in practice were current offensive lineman commit, Wyatt Davis. Davis, a five-star and the top overall guard in the country for 2017 has looked great throughout the week, according to multiple reports. His size is impressive, — at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds — but his quickness and mechanics are showing why he is a top prospect at any position in all of the country. Ohio State certainly knows what they’re getting in Davis.

Going through clips shot this week at @ArmyAllAmerican and @wyattdavis53 might be my favorite player to watch at the event. Just dominant.

— SB Nation Recruiting (@SBNRecruiting) January 5, 2017
The clock is ticking

Tomorrow, prospects Jeffrey Okudah and Darnay Holmes will make their final decisions on where they will play their college football. For Ohio State fans, there’s been confidence that Okudah will be making the Buckeyes his selection. Forever, it seems, Okudah has had the Buckeyes near or at the top of his list, and rumors such as current OSU commits having him as their roommate hasn’t hurt Ohio State’s chances, either. However, Okudah has played the game and has made it his priority to not tip his cap to any such school leading up to a suspenseful decision come fourth quarter of tomorrow’s Army All-American game.

The wait however will be over soon and rest easy Buckeye recruiting nuts, Okudah, barring a total surprise should be selecting the Buckeyes when he choose from the three hats.

5* DB @TheJeffOkudah says he expects to announce in the fourth quarter of the Army Bowl on Saturday. Down to FSU, Oklahoma, and #Buckeyes

— Marc Givler (@MarcGivlerBG) January 5, 2017

Holmes on the other hand has been somewhat of a roller coaster recruitment. For the past month it seemed as if the Buckeyes had overtaken the home-state UCLA Bruins as the leader for Holmes, but as the decision gets closer and closer, the final class for Darnay seems as cloudy as ever.

Reports started coming in last night that the Holmes family was in a little bit of disagreement on the school of choice making it anyone’s guess as to a final call. However, maybe some light was shed as landof10.com’s Jeremy Birmingham was able to give a little information on the situation in his article last night. While we don’t know anything for a fact, we do know the Buckeyes are one of the final schools for Holmes and still feel good about where they stand.

Family of Darnay Holmes stressed, excited, not in agreement ahead of Sat. decision (VIP): https://t.co/KxINe8zQ3M #Huskers #USC #OSU #UCLA pic.twitter.com/b2UprXCYqV

— Mike Schaefer (@mikejschaefer) January 5, 2017

Another fourth quarter decision, Holmes will join Okudah in announcing and if all goes well, Ohio State may just be able to land not only back to back pledges, but the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked cornerbacks in the country. An impressive haul doesn’t even begin to explain what the Buckeyes may just be able to pull in 2017.

Help is on the way?

Sometimes, it feel like it’s said too much, but Ohio State is virtually loaded in the 2017 class at literally any and every position you can think of. One of those positions: wide receiver. While the position may grow in the near future for the 2017 class, current OSU pledge Trevon Grimes is still a top receiver in the country and a jewel in the Ohio State recruiting class.

Yesterday, in an article with Cleveland.com, Grimes shed some light on his ACL injury recovery and how he may be a help to the Buckeyes’ passing game as a serious deep threat when he gets acclimated with the college level.

Trevon Grimes opens up about Ohio State's offense, his recovery from ACL surgery https://t.co/SoDvoEjTZA

— Ari Wasserman (@AriWasserman) January 5, 2017

It’s no secret the success Grimes has had in his prep career and while the 2014 and 2015 Buckeye squads had deep threats like Devin Smith and Michael Thomas to haul in long-balls from J.T. Barrett, the 2016 squad truly missed the deep-threat receiver it so desperately needed. Fortunately, OSU receiver coach Zach Smith and Trevon himself, feel he can (and will) help bring back the deep ball to Ohio State’s offense when he gets to Columbus.
