Michigan State’s Tori Jankoska had a record-setting evening as the Spartans ran over the Buckeyes.

Ohio State women’s basketball found itself in a strange place on Tuesday night. The Buckeyes were on the business end of a beatdown at the hands of Michigan State, 94-75, at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.

Ohio State’s usually potent offense was flat from the outset, falling well short of its 89 point per game average, and shooting just 31 percent as a team. The Buckeyes, ranked 11th in the country, now find themselves 4-1 in conference play and 14-5 overall.

The game featured the Big Ten’s two leading scorers in Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell and Michigan State’s Tori Jankoska. To say Jankoska got the better of this matchup would be a severe understatement.

The senior from Freeland, Michigan became the Spartans’ all-time career scoring leader early in the first quarter, and her 42 points for the game also broke the program’s single-game mark. Jankoska was 14-for-25 from the field, including 8-for-19 from the three-point line, and also contributed six rebounds and seven assists.

Mitchell struggled with her shot, scoring just 13 points on 4-for-18 shooting, and was an uncharacteristically ineffective 1-for-7 from long range.

Kiara Lewis gave the Buckeyes a shot in the arm with 11 points off the bench, and Stephanie Mavunga did what we’ve come to expect from her, scoring nine points and grabbing 15 rebounds narrowly missing her eighth double-double of the season.

Jankoska made short work of reaching the career scoring record, scoring eight of Michigan State’s first 11 points within just three minutes of game time. Ripping nylon on a corner three, she passed Aerial Payne as the program’s preeminent scorer.

The Spartans employed a 2-3 zone early on that slowed Ohio State’s usually prodigious offense capabilities. The Buckeyes started 2-for-7 from the floor and turned the ball over twice, finding themselves in an 15-5 hole.

Ohio State responded with a 7-0 run to get back into contact, sparked by Makayla Waterman, who scored four quick points off the bench. The sophomore also set a solid screen to give Mitchell the room she needed to knock down a three-pointer from the top of the key.

In a quarter of runs, Michigan State looked to Jankoska, and she hit back-to-back triples as part of an ensuing 7-0 run that pushed the lead out to 22-12. The Buckeyes came back from that with another 7-0 run that included two jumpers by Alexa Hart and an and-one from Mitchell.

When the first ten minutes concluded, the Spartans were up 32-22, and Jankoska had scored 19, as the green and white finished out on with an 8-2 flourish.

A field goal drought of nearly four minutes by Ohio State to start the second quarter enabled Michigan State to go on another 8-0 run and build the lead to 40-27 after four minutes. The Buckeyes missed eight consecutive shots and saw their shooting percentage for the game plummet to just over 36 percent, including a meager 2-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc.

The game continued to play to type, though, as Lewis scored four off the bench to spark a 6-0 run for Ohio State. After a Shayla Cooper three, the deficit had shrunk to 43-37, but the Spartans rode their scorching perimeter shooting to finish the half on a 9-0 run that included two more three-pointers for Jankoska. The lead after twenty minutes was 54-41, a season-high for first half points for Michigan State.

Jankoska led all scorers 31 in the half, making seven from behind the arc, as the Spartans shot 10-for-16 from deep.

The Buckeyes shot under 40 percent from the floor, and Mitchell’s struggles in particular were striking. The All-American was just 3-for-11 from the field, 1-for-5 from three-point land, in scoring a team-high eight points. Ohio State connected on just three of its twelve attempts from deep, and was outscored 15-4 on the fast break.

The second half started much as the first, with Ohio State experiencing a field goal drought of nearly four minutes, going just 2-for-10 through the first five minutes. Michigan State extended the lead to 63-48, and Jankoska crept closer to the program’s single-game scoring record.

Another field goal drought by the Buckeyes, this time lasting more than four minutes, led to the largest lead of the game for the Spartans at 72-52, but an uptick in defensive intensity forced multiple turnovers. Ohio State closed the period on a 9-0 run, trailing 72-61 with just ten minutes remaining.

Michigan State went scoreless for the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Buckeyes once again found a lid on the basket. Failing to make a field goal for nearly three minutes, the visitors were unable to dig into the deficit.

A pair of free throws with 3:34 to go gave Jankoska the single-game mark, and saw the Spartan lead balloon back to twenty. It was her night in every way.

Ohio State will be on the floor again Sunday in a road game against Purdue in West Lafayette. Tip is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the game being televised live on ESPN2.

OTTAWA, ON – DECEMBER 29: Bobby Ryan #9 of the Ottawa Senators skates with the puck against Danny DeKeyser #65 of the Detroit Red Wings at Canadian Tire Centre on December 29, 2016 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images) *** Local Caption ***

What’s an Ottawa Senators season without a little controversy or mystery?

When Bobby Ryan was announced as a scratch prior to Ottawa’s 1-0 loss to the Capitals Saturday night, it spurred speculation as to why the Senators’ highest paid player was sitting on the sidelines.

Not only was Ryan present at practice that morning, he also participated in the team’s pre-game skate.

Come puck drop, Ryan was nowhere to be seen and after the game, he wasn’t available to the media. Not that it mattered much since in the days that followed, neither he nor Boucher have disclosed the reasons behind the decision for Ryan to sit out.

The coach said it’s going to be dealt with in house, and we’re going to keep it in house, that’s it,” Ryan said. “I know it doesn’t help your jobs in the speculation columns and the things you’ve got to do, but some things deserve to stay in house and this is one of them.”

As NHL.com’s Chris Stevenson pointed out in an excellent interview on TSN 1200 (that you can listen to here), the organization and the player have not done themselves any favours in their handling of an issue.

Rather than just pin the incident a white lie like the player being ill, the mutual decision to remain quiet not only fuels speculation, it draws attention away from the team and their most recent win.

Stevenson offered what’s probably the most plausible reason for Ryan’s absence. After being benched for the remaining 8:48 his team’s 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on January 1st and having almost a week off between games, Ryan could have stewed over his benching in such a tight game and confronted Boucher at the conclusion of the bye week.

Whether the benching is completely performance-related remains to be seen, but I have a hard time believing that the head coach would send a message by benching one of its better offensive talents when Curtis Lazar continues to receive this organization’s unwavering support.

Considering how forthright the organization has been with the Craig Anderson situation and its disclosure of the reasons why Cody Ceci and Ryan were held out of the first period of an exhibition contest in the fall, it’s disappointing to see this kind of ambiguity now.

But, maybe Elliotte Friedman is onto something in his latest ’30 Thoughts’ column:

29. When a coach like Guy Boucher steadfastly refuses to answer questions about someone (like he’s doing with Bobby Ryan), I wonder if it’s because he honestly can’t. If the discipline or situation becomes an NHL/NHLPA issue, the muzzle is mandated.

In the second year of a seven-year deal, Ryan’s seven goals and 14 points aren’t commensurate of his contract’s $7.25-million annual average value.

As likable as Ryan is and as much as it looks like he’s giving an effort on the ice, his contract carries the weight of expectations and fans never really care that contracts like Ryan’s are often awarded for past production.

It’s that kind of production that has fans already yearning to get out of the deal and at 29-years old, it’s not like Ryan’s best years are ahead of him. As a slow-footed forward who relies on his stickhandling and finesse to elude defenders, the sad reality that many are coming to terms with is that Ryan’s speed isn’t exactly helping him create or sustain the kind of separation he needs to be an effective player.

It’s not Ryan’s fault that management gave away a sizable opportunity cost to bring in a player who was not only on a one-year contract, but had the kind of underlying statistics that should have given the organization pause. Nor is it his fault that he was also on a one-year contract at the time of the deal which essentially painted the organization into a corner where they had to give him a max dollar deal to prevent him from testing free agency. Nor is it his fault that the organization has a tendency to compound their mistakes with more mistakes that aren’t befitting of a small market club.

None of it is on him, but he’ll bear the brunt of the criticism.

Where the situation goes from here remains to be seen, but you can’t blame fans for wishfully thinking that Las Vegas rolls the dice on him when he’s left unprotected for the expansion draft. Mind you, thanks to his contract and dwindling production, who’s to say that Vegas will take him?

Jersey Dilemma

Ottawa’s current set of home and road jerseys have essentially been panned from the moment that they were originally unveiled in 2007, but Sens fans endure.

It’s just what we do and we have to endure them or some variation of them for a while longer.

According to a report out the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, “sources tell the Star Tribune that all NHL teams will be permitted to have only home and road jerseys next season as Adidas takes over for Reebok as the official outfitter of NHL uniforms.

To make the implementation and roll out of these new uniforms easier, NHL teams will apparently not wear alternate sweaters next season.

Considering how some fans long for a return to the 2-D logo or a permanent switch to the heritage sweaters that the team has worn, this report has spurred an outcry of support for an alternative to Ottawa’s current set of home and aways.

For whatever reason, the organization has been hesitant to listen to its fan base and move away from its fucking spectacularly shittacular brand. Not only did they rebrand all of its Stanley Cup banners, but they included the modern logo on Alfredsson’s jersey retirement banner. On the surface, it seems like the logo is going nowhere.

Prospect Porn – Pronman’s Post-WJC Thoughts

white-chabot-dec7-blog.jpg

Over at ESPN Insider, Corey Pronman published his list of standouts, surprises and disappointments at this year’s World Junior Championships. The prospect analyst highlighted three Senators prospects who stood out and predictably, Thomas Chabot and Colin White earned some heavy praise.

Chabot was fantastic during the World Juniors, being named not only the top defenseman at the event, but the tournament MVP after his insane workload in the semifinal and final. He’s a ridiculously good skater for a tall player, makes high-level plays with consistency and can dominate the transition game. I probably still wouldn’t qualify him as a top-end shutdown guy, but with his feet and skill, his team often has the puck anyway. Bulking up and continuing to refine his positional play will go a long way to helping him be a regular with Ottawa next season.

On White:

White was the No. 1 center for the USA and a critical part of his team’s long run at the tournament. White doesn’t have elite speed or hands, but his brain is elite. He’s always around the puck making a good play, and he doesn’t tend to hurt his team. He’s a very capable scorer on top of being a great defensive center. He drives the play forward as well as any center in college hockey, and he should be in the NHL sooner rather than later.

Although he wasn’t tabbed as a standout, Sweden’s Jonathan Dahlen was highlighted as one of the tournament’s surprises.

I expected Dahlen to be a decent player for Sweden, but he ended up being one of its top five forwards. His speed is improved, but still not great. He doesn’t dangle defenders, but he’s a gritty, versatile forward who can make a skilled pass or bulldoze his way to the net. Dahlen got a ton of shots on goal, and the coaching staff trusted him to be useful in any situation.”

These three players will be integral to helping push the Senators from their middling status. Although the system isn’t completely barren beyond these prospects, how quickly they can adjust and contribute to the parent club is pivotal for this team’s success simply because almost everyone on the parent roster has reached or is close to reaching their projected ceiling.

Senators Fire VP of Marketing

In August of 2014 the Senators hired Peter O’Leary to be their new Chief Marketing Officer and Vice-President of Ticketing and according to some rumblings on social media, O’Leary was released from his duties earlier this season when the Senators went on their west coast swing.

Attendance has been a well-documented problem for the organization this season and fan interest and apathy seems to have set in despite the team’s modest success in the standings.

Correcting this problem will be a challenge for whomever comes in.

Other News and Notes:

  • Erik Karlsson was named to this year’s All-Star Game. He is the lone Senators representative. Although his play warrants an appearance, I wish a player like Mark Stone would get more league-wide attention for his on-ice contributions.
  • Travis Yost looks at the Senators’ blue line and wonders if the Senators are actually a better team under Guy Boucher.
  • Peter Joynt dropped a new Senators-inspired track entitled ’25 & always’. You can check out its video below:

Demario McCall is ready to take the next step to become a star with the Buckeyes

“It's because of how I am. Growing up I always wanted to be the top, but in order to get there you have to grind for it. You have to start your way down here and work your way up, right?”

- Demario McCall via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

With the announcement of Curtis Samuel heading for the NFL only a couple of days ago, Ohio State took a hit to their returning playmakers for the 2017 season. The good news is that there’s plenty of talent still coming back and left on the roster. Rising sophomore Demario McCall - who’s quickly turning into a fan favorite - says he believes he’ll be ready for next season to step into a much larger role than he did as a true freshman this past season. For his freshman year, the running back carried the ball 49 times for 270 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The most action we saw of McCall came during Ohio State’s biggest blowouts this season, such as games against Bowling Green, Tulsa, Rutgers, Nebraska, and Maryland. McCall showed off his speed and vision in those games giving plenty of reason for excitement for his future with the Buckeyes. While he seems adamant that he’s a true running back and would prefer not to play H-back for Ohio State, he does want to get on the field as much as possible. And since Urban Meyer and the staff already have a workhorse running back in Mike Weber (coming off an impressive 1,000-yard season) perhaps McCall’s best chance to see the most time would be playing a similar role to what Samuel did.

“The key to everything for Meyer is improving a stagnant passing attack that at times was almost completely nonexistent, and that process will require work at every level.”

- Austin Ward, ESPN

ESPN’s Austin Ward came up with the three of the biggest questions facing Ohio State in 2017: What’s next on offense, can the secondary reload, and how much will Luke Fickell be missed. All of those questions are legitimate concerns for the Buckeyes considering quite the overhaul of their offensive staff with the recent moves of Ed Warriner to Minnesota and Tim Beck headed to Texas to join Tom Herman. But Ohio State has also made some key hires, with the addition of Ryan Day as the quarterbacks coach and just recently hiring Kevin Wilson (former Indiana head coach) as the offensive coordinator.

So the offense with J.T. Barrett returning and a bevy of talented wide receivers at Ohio State’s disposal should continue to improve after fading hard in the latter parts of the 2016 season. As for the defensive secondary, it’s hard to say. The Buckeyes were in a similar position last season, especially at safety, but just like Malik Hooker broke out, it’s possible there’s a star in the making. The loss of Luke Fickell will certainly hurt a bit on the recruiting trail, but with Greg Schiano still on the staff as the defensive coordinator, one would think not too much would change for Ohio State defensively.

“[Big Ten Bold Predictions] Austin Ward: Ohio State storms back to the College Football Playoff”

- ESPN Staff

There were some interesting predictions on this roundtable of ESPN’s staff asking what the bold predictions were for the Big Ten in 2017. One writer had Michigan winning the Big Ten championship next season or Michigan State bouncing back in a big way after an awful 2016 campaign. Austin Ward’s prediction makes sense, too, considering the Buckeyes return J.T. Barrett and Mike Weber on offense, giving them a big bulk of their offensive firepower back. There were certainly key losses such as Curtis Samuel, Raekwon McMillan, Gareon Conley, and Malik Hooker, but nothing that seems impossible compared to the losses the Buckeyes faced heading into 2016.

There’s also the fact that Ohio State’s recruiting class in 2017 is simply phenomenal and is likely to finish first or second in the country when it’s all said and done. With that kind of talent coming into Columbus, there were almost certainly be a couple of true freshman starters at key positions, and if they’re as good as their five-star rankings indicate, that means only good news for the Buckeyes moving forward.

The controversial OC’s hiring is made official after Ed Warinner’s departure for the Land of 10,000 Lakes

Urban Meyer and Ohio State certainly didn’t waste any time in making an effort to right the wrongs surrounding an offense without an identity.

As finally officially confirmed by the Ohio State football program, the Buckeyes have brought in Kevin Wilson, the architect of Indiana’s explosive offense and a hire not without its share of question marks and potential controversy. Wilson was let go by Indiana under somewhat ignominious circumstances, with allegations of player abuse. The school ultimately said Wilson was not fired with cause, however, and due to legal wrangling, we’re unlikely to ever get particularly straight answers on the subject.

Wilson will also coach Ohio State’s tight ends, taking over the duties from Ed Warinner, who’s leaving to become the offensive line coach for Minnesota.

Assuming Ohio State performed its due diligence on the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s departure, the hire would seem like a home run on paper. Meyer’s roots of studying and learning Wilson’s offense goes back to the embryonic stages of his offense while he was still a positional coach at Notre Dame.

That should conclude Ohio State’s coaching recalibration on both sides of the ball. Former Arizona Cardinals DC Bill Davis joins Greg Schiano to coordinate the defense and 49ers QBs coach under Chip Kelly Ryan Day will attempt to help J.T. Barrett solve the issues that plagued his past two seasons as quarterbacks coach. Day will also have the title of “co-offensive coordinator”.

Warinner will now try to #RowTheBoat.

Prior to this offseason, no Ohio State assistant coach had left for a lateral (or lesser) move under Urban Meyer. Now, two have.

After former Ohio State QB coach Tim Beck left to take the OC position at Texas under former Ohio State assistant Tom Herman, another Buckeye staffer will be headed elsewhere. Ohio State offensive coordinator Ed Warinner will become the offensive line coach at Minnesota, under P.J. Fleck, per Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated.

Warinner had been at Ohio State since 2012, coaching the offensive line, and then was promoted to OC and playcaller after the 2014 season. Prior to coaching at Ohio State, Warinner had worked at Notre Dame, Kansas, Illinois, the Air Force Academy, and Army.

Warinner could be a great fit at Minnesota, where he has extensive recruiting ties to the midwest, and has done a good job developing offensive linemen. But his offenses at Ohio State had stagnated over the last two seasons, and change was clearly needed.

This departure paves the way for former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson, who is expected to officially become Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator shortly.

As of now, Ohio State has a full coaching staff, but legislation may pass this April that will allow the Buckeyes to hire a 10th assistant coach.

Best of luck to Coach Warinner in his new job.

The 20-year old offers both experience and loads of talent.

Just days after landing their 18th commitment, Ohio State football claimed No. 19 with four-star cornerback and return specialist Kendall Sheffield. The 6’0, 185 player out of Missouri City, TX’s decision came to light Tuesday.

After initially committing and enrolling at Alabama back in 2015, he redshirted his freshman year and decided to transfer to Blinn College in 2016. Blinn’s the same junior college that produced Cam Newton. His one season with the Buccaneers resulted in 31 total tackles, 11 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles and 2 interceptions -- in addition to a punt return for a touchdown and another score off a kick return. Having already earned his associate’s degree, he has three years of eligibility left to play two.

Sheffield is the overall fourth best recruit available from the JUCO ranks — he’s also ranked first at his position and second from the state of Texas, according to 247 Composite Rankings. He fielded offers from three schools in his state -- Texas A&M, Texas and TCU — and another from USC.

With so much of Ohio State’s secondary declaring early for the 2017 NFL Draft, there is plenty of room on the depth chart for some new talent.
