Jason Garrett and company were on hand for Zeke’s big national championship game. They hope he can match it this weekend.

“This 15 for Ohio State is pretty good.”

- Emmitt Smith, via Todd Archer, ESPN

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and former Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith were both on hand at AT&T Stadium for the first College Football Playoff National Championship. Little did they know, they were able to watch the future of the Cowboys in Ezekiel Elliott. "So I kind of watched him because Emmitt knows a little something about running backs. I watched him closer and closer, and obviously he had a big game that night,” Garrett told Archer. “And then you watch him throughout the next year, and he obviously is a really, really good football player."

You can imagine that Jerry Jones, the team’s owner, was in love with everything about Elliott. “If I’ve ever seen anything that was scripted in the draft room, scripted in the evaluation process, and then has come to bear any more straight down the line than Zeke, I don’t know it,” owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. “He’s exactly more than we had hoped for.” The Cowboys are playing this Sunday against the Packers, and the team is expecting another big game in AT&T Stadium. “I expect to show up in the biggest games and [it's] kind of what I pride myself in,” Elliott said. “So I’m excited for this postseason run.”

Ohio State’s season didn’t end the way everybody wanted to, and changes have been made in order to get Ohio State back to the top of college football. Meyer mentioned that he felt the players deserved better. He was complimentary of Clemson and Alabama. It was promising to hear Meyer say the team needs to get more balanced on offense, and hopefully Kevin Wilson will be able to bring that. The Ohio State offense unquestionably needs it.

Luckily for Ohio State, they’re a young team and will be returning some great talent, despite losing some great players like Malik Hooker and Curtis Samuel. Barrett will be back for his senior season, and Mike Weber had one heck of a freshman year in the backfield, one of the best in Ohio State history. The hype might not be as great as it’s been in past seasons — especially with Alabama and USC around — but we should be able to expect Ohio State to be hovering around the top.

“Can we be the best in the country?”

- Zach Swartz, Ohio State New & Creative Media Director, via Joe Perez, Sports Business Daily

Ohio State’s New & Creative Media Director Zach Swartz was brought on Ohio State’s staff last spring. He’s been helping orchestrate a social media presence that’s had a big impact on Ohio State football. But he hasn’t been doing it alone. Urban Meyer has had a hand in things. He told Perez, “Once you spend time with the coaches, you come to expect what they want out there. There’s a fine line between giving respect to the players and things that should be kept in house and documenting what’s put out there.”

Swartz also notes that it’s a very collaborative environment, which is aimed at recruits. He reports to Director of Player Personnel, Mark Pantoni, who you might know best as the guy who tweets “BOOOOOOOM!” whenever Ohio State lands a recruit. “My primary goal isn’t really social media, but content production and getting that in front of recruit’s eyes,” Swartz said. If recent success is any indication, there’s no question that Swartz has done a great job while in Columbus.

NEW YORK, NY – DECEMBER 27: Zack Smith #15 of the Ottawa Senators scores at 3:10 of the first period against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on December 27, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Zack Smith is renowned for two things: 1) the shit-eating grin that he displays during each on-ice scrum; and 2) possessing this blend of physicality and modest offensive talent that not only endears himself to his coaches but to this team’s fans as well.

As an impending unrestricted free agent, Smith’s future with the club has been the subject of conversation going back as far as last season when he improbably scored a career-high 25 goals.

In the last year of four-year contract that he signed in September of 2012 that pays him $2.35-million (with an average annual contract value of $1.8875-million), the question of what to do with Smith will only intensify as the Senators approach the trade deadline.

The Senators currently sit in third place in the Atlantic Division with 46 points and are in a midst of the Eastern Conference playoff race, so it’s hard to imagine the Senators’ philosophy changing since have ever really made a habit of trading impending free agents or selling high on players at the deadline.

Rather than trade impending free agents or let them hit free agency, the organization has taken pride in its ability to re-sign its own players – which invites the question: how much should the Senators be looking to pay Zack Smith?

Postmedia’s Ken Warren kicked around the idea of a Smith contract extension in today’s Ottawa Sun, suggesting that the versatile winger could command a $4-million salary.

Is he worth it?

Probably not.

I like Zack Smith and the flexibility he provides, but not at that cost.

Smith posted some low double-digit goal totals earlier in his career, but thanks to possessing a decent shot, there was always been some intrigue in wondering whether he could be capable of more.

At the start of the 2014-15 season, Paul MacLean elected to use Smith in a top-six capacity at the expense of Mika Zibanejad. Like a few other veterans who struggled in expanded roles, Smith’s production and play failed to justify his role.

Eventually a wrist injury would sap Smith’s strength and confidence that season and after spending time on the team’s fourth line, Smith fell into the trap of playing a conservative dump and chase style.

Last season however, Smith not only benefited from riding shotgun to some players who have no problems carrying and distributing the puck, but he rode the percentages as well.

B by scoring 25 goals on 121 shots (20.4), Smith essentially doubled his regular season high for shooting percentage (10.4) that he set in the 2011-12 season when he scored 14 goals for his previous career high.

It’s pretty rare for a shooter to score that many goals when he shoots so infrequently, but even Smith’s numbers this season – nine goals on 72 shots (12.4) – put him ahead of his career norms.

Smith should never be regarded as a 20-goal guy, but there’s definitely utility there.

The real danger for Senators management is committing term and money to a player who not only will turn 29-years old this April, but whose inflated production is intrinsically linked tied to playing alongside Mark Stone.

Courtesy of HockeyAnalysis.com, here’s a table depicting how Stone has fared playing with and without Stone at five-on-five over the past two seasons:

TOI GF60 GA60 GF% CF60 CA60 CF%
With Stone 604:15 2.58 1.69 60.5 64.34 53.12 54.8
Without Stone 813:37 2.06 1.92 51.9 50.96 58.70 46.5

Granted, Ottawa’s depth has kind of sucked the past two years and it’s understandable why Smith’s numbers would plummet playing with lesser quality players, but that also ignores how much Stone’s presence improves the performance of his linemates.

A simple glance at Stone’s ‘With or Without You Numbers’ corroborates this and if you’re into visuals, today’s piece on Silver Seven which examines the performance of the Smith-Brassard-Stone line included a graph which helps plainly identify Stone as an integral factor for success.

screen_shot_2017_01_10_at_10-47-17_pm.png

None of that should be new for fans who watch this team regularly, but his ability to influence the production and play of his fellow winger raises a crucial point: should the Senators allocate relatively significant resources to re-sign Zack Smith?

It’s not like this is a relatively new phenomenon, the play and performance of Jason Spezza didn’t come without a cost. His brilliance resulted in contract extensions to classic pump and dump candidates like Milan Michalek and Colin Greening – players whose untenable production normalized over the years that followed.

The emergence of players like Ryan Dzingel and Mike Hoffman has bolstered the left side and realistically, both should slot ahead of Smith in the lineup. Management has also been pretty adamant that Clarke MacArthur will return and play games this season. Granted, he last played in a regular season game in October of 2015, so it’s not like the Senators can exactly bank on MacArthur’s long-term health here. But, if he ever gets a clean bill of health and steps in, he’s a well-rounded player who brings more to the table than Smith.

Even without MacArthur however, it seems reasonable to assume that a prospect like Colin White will step into the lineup at the conclusion of his season at Boston College – whether it’s this season or next fall remains to be seen, but his presence should mitigate a prospective Smith departure.

The other real danger for management is committing too many dollars and term to Smith when its better and younger players come off their inexpensive second contracts in the forthcoming years and require raises of their own. The last thing the organization needs is to run out of resources and be put in situations in which it has to move out talented young players and draft picks to acquire players who guarantee cost certainty. Oh hey, Derick Brassard. Didn’t see you there.

Barring a miracle, the contracts to Phaneuf and Ryan aren’t going anywhere anytime soon and as a small market team, the Senators can ill afford to pay a quarter or third of its player budget paying for diminished returns from this trio.

There are better ways to allocate its resources.

The Buckeye cornerback is hoping to be a high draft pick.

One of the featured members of the Ohio State secondary, Marshon Lattimore has decided to skip his final two seasons of eligibility and declare for the 2017 NFL Draft.

Marshon Lattimore (@shonrp2) announces his decision to enter the 2017 @NFL Draft. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/mJ9H75hKaw

— UNINTERRUPTED (@uninterrupted) January 11, 2017

Lattimore finished the 2016 season with 38 total tackles and 4 interceptions, including one pick-6. The redshirt sophomore started the year off strong, claiming 2 interceptions in Week 2 against Tulsa, and added another in Week 3 against Oklahoma.

The corner had previously sat behind a talented group of defensive backs that are now suiting up in the NFL. Despite having only one strong season under his belt, Lattimore is the just the latest argument for calling Ohio State “DBU”.

One scouting profile notes Lattimore’s draft-worthy talent:

Lattimore has excellent athletic ability and cover skills while also showing the propensity to force turnovers. Lattimore could stand to be a more physical player, but his cover skills alone should see him drafted pretty highly.

In the final game of his Ohio State career, Lattimore had three tackles in the tough loss to the Clemson Tigers. He becomes the third member of the Buckeyes’ decorated 2016 secondary to enter the draft early, joining safety Malik Hooker and fellow corner Gareon Conley.

Let’s revisit all of our preseason Ohio State and college football predictions
Matt Brown
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land

usa_today_9787724.0.jpg

Actually .... We did a pretty good job this year!

So before the season started, we polled everybody who writes for this website about all sorts of college football questions, from who will rush for the most yards for Ohio State, to who will win the College Football Playoff.

Now that the season is over, it seems only fair to take a look back to see how we did, and either pat ourselves on the back, or shame ourselves publicly for being dumb.

Who will lead Ohio State in rushing this season?

Mike Weber: 83.3%

Actually: Yeah, it was Mike Weber, who picked up 1,096 yards J.T. Barrett was second, with 845.

Who will lead Ohio State in receiving yardage this season?

Noah Brown: 66.7%

Actually: Noah Brown was second, with 405 yards, but it wasn’t especially close. Curtis Samuel led the team with 865 yards. Not one voter predicted that. Whoops!

What true freshman do you think will have the biggest impact this season?

Michael Jordan: 10 votes

Actually: Yeah, it was probably Michael Jordan, who started every game. Nick Bosa had a nice season for himself, too.

Which Buckeye that nobody is talking about will step up to make the biggest impact (non-freshman edition)?

Chris Worley: 3 votes

Dontre Wilson: 3 votes

Marshon Lattimore: 3 votes

Actually: Lattimore seems like an acceptable answer, but the true answer is almost assuredly Malik Hooker.

Which game this season scares you the most?

Oklahoma: 66.7%

Actually: Just two people picked Penn State. Looks like they were right.

What will Ohio State's regular season record be?

11-1: 55.6%

Actually: Hey, how about that! It was 11-1.

How will Ohio State's season end?

First round playoff exist: 10 votes

Actually: Maybe we’re getting pretty good at this after all.

How many Ohio State coaches will leave for other jobs after the season?

One coach will leave: 50%

Actually: Three. Tim Beck is off to Texas, and Luke Fickell is the new coach at Cincinnati. And then, of course, Ed Warinner left to take the offensive line job at Minnesota.

Please list your predicted order of finish in the Big Ten East (Top to bottom)

7 points for a 1st place vote, 6 for a 2nd, etc

Ohio State: 121 points (13 first place votes)

Michigan: 111 (5)

Michigan State: 89

Penn State: 71

Indiana: 47

Maryland: 34

Rutgers: 28

Actually: Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Rutgers. Okay, so we didn’t see Michigan State coming. But neither did you.

Please list your predicted order of finish in the Big Ten West (Top to Bottom)

Iowa: 111 points (7 first place votes)

Nebraska: 102 (5)

Wisconsin: 89 (3)

Northwestern: 76 (2)

Illinois: 44

Minnesota: 63 (1)

Purdue: 19

Actually: Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Purdue. Well, at least we got Purdue pretty well figured out.

What Big Ten team is most likely to surpass expectations this year?

Michigan State: 3

Actually: The answer here is either Penn State or Wisconsin, but in a manner of speaking, Michigan State certainly did too. FWIW, two voters picked Penn State, and another two picked Wisconsin.

Who in the Big Ten is most likely to wildly disappoint?

Michigan: 8

Actually: Michigan State, who got a single vote. Haters, all of us.

Who is your Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year?

J.T. Barrett: 14 votes

Actually: Saquon Barkley, Penn State, who got two votes, including one of mine.

Who is your Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year?

Jabrill Peppers: 6 votes

Actually: Yes, this prediction was correct, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it.

Who is your Big Ten Coach of the Year?

Urban Meyer: 6 votes

Actually: Lol at us for thinking an Ohio State coach would actually win this. Paul Chryst and James Franklin split the award with the media and coaches. Both did do great jobs this year at least.

Which team in the preseason AP Poll Top 10 is most likely to disappoint?

Tennessee: 6 votes

Actually: I mean, Tennessee was a really good guess, but the true answer (and one that got three votes), was Notre Dame. In case you forgot, Notre Dame finished 4-8.

Which team in the preseason AP Poll 11-25 range do you see as having the best chance of making the playoffs?

TCU: 8 votes

Actually: Nope, wasn’t TCU. That would be No. 14 Washington, who did, in fact, make the Playoff.

Which team outside the Top 25 do you see a potential sleeper?

Texas: 3 votes

Miami: 3 votes

Actually: Nope and nope. Wisconsin.

Which team outside of the Power 5 and Houston do you see as the most dangerous?

Boise State: 6 votes

Actually: Should have been Western Michigan, who actually won the Group of 5 bid and came within a shout of upsetting Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl.

Who is the highest profile coach that's going to get axed this year?

Gus Malzahn: 4 votes

Actually: Only one of the people that got a vote actually got fired, and that was Charlie Strong (three votes). We’re not as good at predicting these evidently.

Who is winning the Heisman Trophy?

Deshaun Watson: 9 votes

Actually: Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, who didn’t get a single vote from our field.

Who are your four playoff teams?

Clemson: 14

Ohio State: 12

Alabama: 10

LSU: 8

TCU: 8

Actually: I mean, three out of four is pretty good, isn’t it? We whiffed on Washington, who didn’t get a single vote. Houston and Oregon got two each. Whoops.

Who is going to win the national title?

Clemson: 8 votes

Actually: WELL HOW ABOUT THAT?!

Sheffield, a former member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, commits to be a Buckeye; 4-star WR Lindsey decommits.

Sheffield commits

Ohio State received a commit from cornerback Kendall Sheffield on Tuesday. Sheffield, who was once a member of the Alabama football team, spent last fall at Blinn Junior College in Texas. What does this commitment mean? Sheffield is regarded as one of the best JUCO prospects in the country and most people expect him to make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes next season. Though Ohio State has pulled in an elite defensive back class for 2017, Sheffield’s experience is sure to help him win a starting spot opposite of Denzel Ward next year. If his on-field production matches the high expectations, don’t be surprised to see Sheffield as a one-and-done type of player. This was arguably the most important recruit the Buckeyes needed to sign heading into a 2017 season in which Ohio State will contend for a national championship. To read the full update on Sheffield’s commitment to Ohio State, click here.

Lindsey decommits

In the waning hours on Tuesday, as well as the early part on Wednesday, Buckeye football received more news: four-star wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) announced on Twitter his decommitment from OSU and reopening of his recruitment.

I will like to announce that I have OFFICIALLY opened my recruiting process back up.

— T-WAYNE... (@tyjonlindsey) January 11, 2017

Lindsey, who came from the same high school as current Buckeye commit Tate Martell, is a U.S. Army All-America selection, as well as the No. 6 WR in the 2017 class.

About 90 minutes before announcing the reopening of his recruitment, Lindsey posted this tweet:

Have you ever been so confused about something to the point you wished you couldn't think about it anymore?

Yeah me too.

— T-WAYNE... (@tyjonlindsey) January 11, 2017

On the 247sports crystal ball predictions, Lindsey was considered an overwhelming favorite to become a Buckeye. OSU took 86 percent of the predictions, while the Nebraska Cornhuskers took eight percent. This season, the No. 1 WR had five receptions for 125 yards and two touchdowns—before suffering a knee injury.

For Tyjon, we hope for only the best in his recruitment and future endeavours.

The next member of Zone 6

2017 prospect Brendon White is already on campus at Ohio State. Listed as an athlete by most recruiting sites, questions arose as to what position White would play at the next level. For now, it looks as if White will be starting in the wide receiver room. With a slew of unproven playmakers returning at that position, it makes sense that Urban Meyer would like that position group to receive a bump in athleticism. Eric Glover-Williams was also moved from defensive back to H-back on Monday.

#zone6

An offer that’s hard to refuse

Ohio State extended a walk-on offer to 2017 wide receiver Melvin Hill yesterday. Hill, from Alabama, was a standout at Baker High School this past fall. Though it will always be a challenge for walk-ons to get any run at a program like Ohio State, Hill does have good size at 6-foot-3 and checks in at 190 pounds. 247Sports has Hill as a two-star prospect. Hill is currently committed to UMass.

The Bishop Gorman product looks to be headed elsewhere

A big news day for Ohio State football got even bigger late Tuesday night, as four-star WR Tyjon Lindsey decommitted from Ohio State, per his Twitter account.

I will like to announce that I have OFFICIALLY opened my recruiting process back up.

Lindsey committed to Ohio State on August 22nd, and is teammates at Las Vegas high school football powerhouse Bishop Gorman with fellow 2017 Buckeyes commits QB Tate Martell and DT Haskell Garrett.

Lindsey’s decommitment leaves Ohio State with only one wide receiver commitment in the class of 2017 in St. Thomas Aquinas product Trevon Grimes, though early enrollee Brendon White hinted at a move to ‘Zone 6’ on twitter earlier in the week.

The decommitment also knocks the Buckeyes back to No. 2 in the 247 Sports composite rankings, just hours after they had moved past Alabama for the top spot with the commitment of former Tide cornerback Kendall Sheffield.

Best of luck to Lindsey in the rest of his recruiting process and career.
