The Buckeyes head back out to California for St. Brown.

We’re not even 48 hours removed from the last faxed in letter of intent signed by Ohio State recruits in the 2017 class, and we’re already moving on to 2018 class and beyond. The 2017 class will go down in history, but if Urban Meyer has anything to say about it, he may just try and outdo himself in 2018.

"Pound for pound the best recruiting class in @247Sports history." -@SWiltfong247

Let's get to work.

Cali stud receiver catches OSU offer

Well, it didn’t last long, but as soon as 2017 was completed, the Buckeye football staff dished out a new offer to a top California receiver prospect. Announcing via his Twitter account, Amon-Ra St. Brown (Anaheim, CA / Mater Dei) is the latest to grab a prestigious OSU offer.

WOW! Tremendously honored to say that I have received an offer from THE OHIO STATE University ⭕#BuckEyes #P4E pic.twitter.com/RfySbU1xm1

— Amon-Ra (@amonra_stbrown) February 3, 2017

Amon-Ra, a 6-foot-1, 187-pound receiver is currently the No. 3 receiver in the country and the third best prospect overall in California for the 2018 class. With 20 offers so far from the likes of Alabama, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and USC, it’s easy to see why the Buckeyes wanted to get into the mix for this Cali product.

The 247sports crystal ball has the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame running away with this one, but with Ohio State and Urban Meyer in the mix, anything is possible. Amon-Ra only has to look at the way they’re sending receivers to the NFL in the last two drafts to see just how well Ohio State develops his position. While Notre Dame may be the leader in the early going, the Buckeyes are now a player in this game.

Smith: the real deal

With 2017 now signed, sealed and delivered, 2018 kids are now at the highest priority. Yesterday, in Meyer’s signing day press conference, he alluded to the fact that 50 percent of his classes need to be in-state Ohio recruits. With 2017 being an easy exception due to the players involved, 2018 looks to get back to the roots of Ohio State football.

One prospect that will be a major priority for the Buckeyes in 2018 is no new name to recruiting followers, as L’Christian “Blue” Smith (Dayton, OH / Wayne) makes the headlines more often than not. The Huber Heights Wayne two-sport star recently chose football as his college sport of choice, but not longer after reconsidered and put basketball back in the picture for his future plans. What remains to be seen is which one he’ll choose. It may even be both. In fact, Ohio State has offered Blue in both basketball and football—as well as other notable Big Ten programs such as Iowa.

While football may be the more popular choice, Meyer and Ohio State certainly aren’t wasting any time with the four-star receiver due to his talent, size and being from one of the top prep programs within Ohio.

Yesterday, the accolades for the 6-foot-6, 205-pound wide-out continued as he announced via his Twitter account that he received an invite to Under Armour’s All-America regional football camp that hosts the top prospects in their respective region. Sure to put on a show, Blue has been a receiver the Buckeyes have already shown ample interest in, and now that the 2018 class is the next class up, Blue will only be seeing more of the Buckeyes.

Blessed to recieve an invite to the UA All American Camp..!!! #IWILL pic.twitter.com/f924E2vmiW

— BLUE SMITH⁶ (@bluesmith_) February 2, 2017
Another Smith, another invite

When Ohio State landed their Cleveland Heights four-star receiver Jaylen Harris, they knew of another Heights football player that was seriously interested in the Buckeyes. Harris’ teammate, Tyreke Smith, isn't a fairly new name to Buckeye fans either as he was a recent recipient of an Ohio State offer.

The four-star defensive end was told by the Buckeyes football staff to be patient and that eventually with camping at Ohio State and continued development, he would be a Buckeye. Fast forward after rival Michigan offered Smith, and the Buckeyes followed suit in hopes to keep the best Ohio talent in state at the next level.

Currently, Smith checks in as a 6-foot-3, 260-pound four-star DE and grades out as the sixth best at his position and the seventh best prospect overall in the 2018 Ohio recruiting class, according to 247sports. With over twenty scholarship offers from the likes of Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas, Ohio State certainly wants to keep this recruitment closer than others.

Yesterday, Tyreke was another Ohio prospect in the 2018 class to receive the Under Armour All-America regional camp invite as one of Ohio’s best. Smith has said he has no set decision in mind and that he’d like to take all five of his official visits before making his college plans final. However, the crystal ball (and most) would like to believe that come signing day 2018, Smith will be the next Cleveland native to head down I-70 and suit up for the home state Buckeyes. Time will tell, but for an in-state prospect, it’s never too early to wonder.

Excited to receive an invite to The Under Armour All American Regional camp. @UAFootball #AllAmerica #IWILL pic.twitter.com/TrrLQTP1rt

Thankfully then running backs coach Stan Drayton was able to talk some sense into Urban Meyer.

“We were debating on just whether to take him. It came down to the 11th hour with Missouri. We were like, ‘Maybe we should just let him go’ because we had another running back in that class.”

Former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman via Brad Townsend, Dallas Morning News

Who knows just where Ohio State and Urban Meyer might be had the Buckeyes decided to give up their pursuit of Ezekiel Elliott in 2013. With the way Elliott performed in the first College Football Playoff, it’s easy to think the Buckeyes wouldn’t have won the national title without the running back from Missouri. Now Elliott will like be named NFL Rookie of the Year on Saturday night after being taken fourth overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.

Had it not been for former Ohio State running backs coach Stan Drayton, Elliott might have would up at Missouri, which was where both of Ezekiel’s parents went to college. Meyer was hesitant to give his approval to the recruitment of Elliott, particularly because Meyer didn’t think Ohio State should be recruiting against Missouri. Despite already having Dontre Wilson in the fold, Drayton was able to sway Meyer into adding Elliott to the 2013 class, and the rest is history. In the end, the decision to stick with Elliott worked out for all parties involved. Not only did Ohio State win a national title, but Elliott is one of the bright young stars in the NFL. While Meyer is working on getting the Buckeyes their next title, Herman and Drayton have reunited about 200 miles away from Elliott, as they try and bring Texas back to prominence.

“I have no issue competing with whoever. I mean, to make it in the NFL, you have to compete against the best anyway. This is not where I want to stop. I want to play in the NFL, so this isn’t going to be the last time I have to compete against the best guy out there.”

Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell via Austin Ward, ESPN

Even though Tate Martell has been at Ohio State for just a few weeks, he already has big plans for his time in Columbus. While nobody is expecting Martell to unseat J.T. Barrett for the starting quarterback job in the fall, there is a bit of a logjam behind Barrett. Martell, Joe Burrow, and Dwayne Haskins will all be trying to make a name for themselves this year on the quarterback depth chart, as the trio looks to position themselves as the front-runner for Barrett’s job heading into the 2018 season.

While Martell will likely redshirt this fall, but that doesn’t mean his presence can’t light a fire under Barrett, Burrow, and Haskins. With the time he spent on the field in blowouts, Burrow looked impressive and seems like the favorite to backup Barrett. Haskins made a name for himself with the way he ran the scout team in his first year in Columbus, particularly in Fiesta Bowl as he helped the Ohio State defense prepare for Clemson’s Deshaun Watson. Even though it’s likely Martell will have to wait a year to get a chance to see the field for the Buckeyes, he’ll be able to soak up everything he can this year as he prepares to make a name for himself in the future with Ohio State.

“I just try to build off of each year and each game and each experience out there on the field and take everything I did in the offseason, whether it’s rugby or fitness, and try to implement that into my game, and I’m lucky enough that I’ve been able to make the plays that have come to me, but a lot needs to be said about the guys around me that allow me to do that.”

Former Ohio State defensive back Nate Ebner via Sam Gardner, FOX Sports

No matter how the Super Bowl plays out on Sunday night, Nate Ebner has already had quite a whirlwind past 12 months. The former Ohio State defensive back has to be ready for a bit of a break after competing in the Summer Olympics in Rio for the U.S. rugby sevens team, and following that up by joining the Patriots immediately after. Even though Ebner has to be running on fumes by now, it is an experience he wouldn’t change at all. After the United States finished ninth in Rio, Ebner had already missed New England’s first preseason game. Many thought Ebner might have some catching up to do, but that wasn’t the case, as he was named second-team special teams All-Pro, finishing just behind teammate Matthew Slater.

Should New England beat Atlanta on Sunday night, it will be Ebner’s second Super Bowl title with New England. It is still unknown if Ebner will be able to play against the Falcons in Houston after he suffered his second concussion of the season in the AFC Championship Game. While Ebner wasn’t able to join wide receiver Bob Hayes and defensive tackle Michael Carter as players to both medal in the Olympics and win a Super Bowl in their careers, nobody can take away just how impressive his play has been not only on the rugby pitch, but also on the football field over the past year.

This class is that good.

National Signing Day is finally in the books, and Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class is officially official.

You probably already know the high level details at this point: The Buckeyes signed 21 players, finished with the No. 2 ranked class in the 247Sports Composite rankings, and easily cleared their highest ranked recruiting class ever, despite bringing in a relatively small group. The group had five consensus five-star players and 19 total blue-chip recruits. One of the two non-blue chip players, of course, was Blake Haubeil, one of the nation’s top kickers.

So we know that this Ohio State recruiting class is really, really good. But Ohio State is used to signing really, really good recruiting classes. To get a better idea of exactly how elite this group is, let’s see how the top end stacks up with Urban Meyer’s other Ohio State recruiting classes, using the ratings from the 247Sports Composite:

What that tells us is that of the top ten recruits, a whopping five of them came from this year’s class. And there are a few other players, like Trevon Grimes and J.K. Dobbins, who aren’t far away from that cutoff mark.

Given the rest of the names on that list, it seems that Ohio State’s new freshmen are in good company. Noah Spence was very productive with Ohio State before off the field issues forced his departure, but he’s an NFL starter now. Nick Bosa had a strong freshman campaign. McMillian was one of the best players on some very good defenses and will be an early round NFL Draft selection. Vonn Bell was an excellent starter for a College Football Playoff championship team, as was Washington.

If two or three of these five pan out like McMillian or Bell, the Buckeyes, especially on defense, are going to be loaded in the near future. If all five? Look out.

You don’t have to be a five-star recruit to have a great career at Ohio State. Plenty of the best players the last five years are not on this list, or even especially close to it. But bringing in this kind of talent helps, no doubt. Ohio State’s future looks to be in extraordinarily good shape.

In-State Players to Watch

Looking at some players that committed elsewhere from in-state (I'll do offense today and defense tomorrow):

QB - Sean Clifford (Penn State), Danny Clark (Kentucky), Andrew Marty (Northwestern)

Those are the big time players. Marty has tremendous upside after missing his junior year and might have the highest ceiling of the group. Toledo got a good looking player in Caleb Martin from Fort Recovery. Dominique Robinson from Canton McKinley is headed to Miami, but probably as a TE. Kent State landed two solid in-state QBs in Dustin Crum from Grafton-Midview and Will Phillis from Hlliard Bradley.

RB - Bryant Koback (Kentucky), DeCavilon Reese (Marshall), Michael Warren (UC), Morgan Ellison (Indiana), Ra'Von Bonner (Illinois), Todd Sibley (Pitt), Weston Bridges (MSU)

Bridges is very athletic and could be a slot back whereas Koback, Bonner and Sibley are good "between the tackle" guys who lack a little burst. Ellison is the total package and could be a really good one at Indiana. Warren was probably under recruited. Eastern Kentucky is getting a steal in Alonzo Booth from DeSales. Marshall got another good North/South guy in Brenden Knox.

WR/TE - Caleb Stoneburner (Boston College), Danny Davis (Wisconsin), Trent Cloud (UC), JaVonte' Richardson , Matt Dotson (Michigan State), Charles Reeves (Pitt), Trey Pugh (Northwestern), Nate Weinman (Wyoming)

Obviously the big question will be what do Dotson, Davis and Richardson do at the next level. Richardson still might end up on defense, the reverse of Brendon White. Toledo got two good possession guys in Bryce Mitchell from Bowsher and Nick Kovacs from Springboro and they also got a speedy slot in Dakari Carter from Streetsboro. Interested to see where Joe Coopers' son from Reynoldsburg ended up at. Bowling Green got a nice player in Matt Wilcox from Wayne. Reeves is a guy who could very good at the next level. Bowling Green getting a good TE in Travis Koontz from Boardman.

OL - Carson Van Lynn (Pitt), Chris Glaser (UVA), Howard Watkins (Illinois), Jeff Nogaj (Iowa State), Joel Honigford (Michigan), Matt Bockhorst (Clemson), Matt Carrick (Michigan State), Matt Sichterman (Nebraska), Mike Miranda (PSU), Sam Gerak (Northwestern)

OL is undoubtedly the toughest position to project but I firmly believe that there is enough OSU-level talent at OL in-state every year. You could probably build a pretty decent OL with Myers, Honigford, Munford, Van Lynn and Miranda. UC landed two talented players in Cody Lamb from Miamisburg and Vince McConnell from Massillon...McConnell has a very high ceiling in my opinion. Bowling Green also got a pair of possible bookend tackles from Columbus in Derek Downs from Westerville North and Sam Neverov from Dublin Jerome.

It seems pretty obvious what happened to me (and I think I've said this before in this thread): OSU cast their wide net of early offers in Florida hoping a few would come up for a camp or two and they could evaluate in person and prioritize.

Judson happened to commit on the spot without being anywhere close to the top of the board. Thus the cold shoulder.
