CALGARY, AB – OCTOBER 28: Zack Smith #15 of the Ottawa Senators in action against the Calgary Flames during an NHL game at Scotiabank Saddledome on October 28, 2016 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. (Photo by Derek Leung/Getty Images)

Well Senators fans, when it comes to your mock expansion draft scenarios, you can now pencil forward Zack Smith in as one of the team’s protected forwards.

Today the Ottawa Senators announced this afternoon that they have inked Smith to a four-year contract extension worth $13-million that carries an average annual value of $3.25-million.

The 28-year old forward, who turns 29 in April, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent this July.

His new contract is the culmination of an impressive turnaround.

Through his first seven seasons in the league, Smith mixed flashes of offensive potential — 14 goals in 2011-12 and 13 goals in 2013-14 — with ineffectual play on the team’s third and fourth lines. At times, Smith looked confused with his role and with it, his confidence waned as he became trapped in the conservative dump and chase role alongside fourth liners like Chris Neil.

Then last season, everything changed.

Playing alongside Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Mark Stone, everything Zack Smith shot seemingly went in. On the strength of a 20.7 shooting percentage, Smith set a new regular season high in goals with 25.

When a player essentially doubles his previous career high in shooting percentage, there’s inevitably going to be some skepticism regarding the repeatability of that level of production. As a result, many fans (including yours truly) questioned whether or not it would be in the team’s best interests to sell high on Smith.

He already oozed intangibles and a physical dimension that general managers and scouts love and tend to overpay for at the deadline, but thanks to Smith’s previously unmatched levels of production, you couldn’t blame fans for dreaming on what kind of trade offers the Senators could entertain.

Keep in mind, the Senators were a middling franchise – caught in cycle of making the playoffs one year and missing out the next. Within that context, coupled with the prospective return of a top-six forward like Clarke MacArthur who would push Smith down the depth chart (and away from Mark Stone), you couldn’t blame fans for thinking it may be in the small market team’s interests to stockpile future assets and build towards the future.

Fast forward to the present with the Senators currently holding down a playoff position and the announcement that MacArthur would be shut down for the remainder of the season because of a concussion and you can’t help but wonder where the Senators would be without Zack Smith’s contributions.

Although his production is a notch below last year’s pace, Smith still has 11 goals and 22 points in 43 games. His shooting percentage (12.7) resembles something closer to his career norms than last year’s inflated number, but his goal production is still pretty decent because he’s shooting the puck more than he ever has.

According to Corsica.Hockey, Smith’s five-on-five individual shots per 60 minutes of ice time is 8.13 – the highest of his career. To put this in perspective, he was only averaging 5.76 shots per 60 last season.

Smith deserves credit for adapting and changing his style. He’s gone from the predictable dump and chase style to one in which he’s carrying the puck with confidence and helping extend shifts in the opposition’s end.

Obviously there’s something to be said about how Smith has been the benefactor of playing with Mark Stone. His ‘With or Without You’ numbers over the past two seasons paint a pretty clear picture of this, but everyone plays a lot better with Stone. He’s one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL for a reason.

There’s definitely something to be said about using Stone as a mechanism to inflate a teammate’s worth and inherent trade value, while replacing said player with an inexpensive alternative who has a chance to outproduce what Smith has brought to the table – especially for a small market franchise.

But at the same time, provided Smith continues to play with Stone and perform at level close to where he is at right now, his contract isn’t that egregious, especially when you consider that he has 28 goals and 48 points in his last 80 games.

Conversely, Smith will be 29-years old at the start of the 2017-18 season and it’s hard not to envision a scenario where he’s passed on the depth chart by a more talented offensive alternative within the span of this contract — which would then put Smith in a position wherein he’d be hard-pressed to approach the kind of numbers he can put up with Stone.

Diminished returns are the last thing the budget conscious Senators need, but then again, fans were banking on the idea that MacArthur would return and push Smith down the depth chart. It’s a reminder that even the best plans don’t always unfold as they were meant to, but with Smith in tow for the next few years, management has a known commodity that they like and trust.

LGHL Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator is part of the reason J.T. Barrett stuck around

Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator is part of the reason J.T. Barrett stuck around

Without changes to the coaching staff, the three-year starter’s decision to stay would have been a lot more complicated.

“It was not like we were awful by any means. We’ve got the train running, we just got to make sure it’s going full speed.”

-J.T. Barrett, via Mitch Stacy, Associated Press

There has been little question over the last three years of Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett’s on-field leadership. He has proven himself both to be an outstanding quarterback--even accepting the Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award at Ohio State’s basketball game Sunday--and a quasi offensive coordinator on the field itself. But even Barrett’s leadership and skill were not enough to overcome the stagnated offense that was present for much of the 2016 season, and Barrett was one to recognize the need for a change at offensive coordinator in order to get things back on track--especially following the Buckeyes’ 31-0 defeat in the Fiesta Bowl at the hands of Clemson.

In fact, the change at offensive coordinator, in which Urban Meyer brought on former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson, played into Barrett’s decision to return to Ohio State for his senior season, as the quarterback stated that if he were to return to Columbus, he would have the opportunity to grow as a quarterback. It also makes good on Meyer’s promise to make Ohio State a passing team once again starting next season.

Meyer also hired Ryan Day, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers, as quarterbacks coach. Day brings not only NFL coaching experience, but also an offensive mindset instilled by Chip Kelly both as player and coach. Barrett acknowledged that the change was a good thing, stating that “sometimes we get set in our ways,” especially as fans had come to expect an explosive offense like that seen under Tom Herman.

Barrett is already the career leader among quarterbacks in most statistical categories at Ohio State, including the record for touchdowns. His return, along with that of guard Billy Price, who is shifting to center next season, gives Wilson and Day at least two solid returners on offense to start with.

“It wasn’t about one institution. It wasn’t about some regional protection effort. It’s very simple, if we’re going to sit here and talk about being attentive to the time expectation and managing those appropriately for student-athletes, then we have to look at that type of out-of-season, off-campus, take-a-trip practice.”

-SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, via Mitch Sherman, ESPN

It would seem that Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh’s unconventional recruiting tactics are being further limited. After controversy last season in regards to his excessive use of satellite camps as recruiting opportunities, Harbaugh’s squad is facing similar issues this offseason in regards to off-campus practices taken by the Wolverines last March in Florida.

A new rule voted on by the Power 5 conference autonomy group would ban offseason, off-campus practices during vacation periods for NCAA athletes. And while student athletes opposed the measure 11-4, each of the Power 5 leagues had a majority vote in its favor, including an 11-3 response from the Big Ten.

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel took a different view of things: “The rule didn’t get proposed until after we took the football team down to Florida for spring break. So I think you can read into that as you will.” Last year, Michigan held four practices at IMG Academy in Florida, a recruiting hotbed which hosts six of the top 50 prospects in the ESPN 300. Manuel said that no Michigan players complained about their trip to Florida, and that the student-athletes acknowledged that they would “enjoy the opportunity and experience” of training off-campus.

The stated goal of the proposal is to improve time balance for student athletes. The committee voted on several other rules in conjunction with similar goals of remaining respectful of student-athletes’ time. One such proposal, passed by a unanimous 80-0 vote, prohibited any athletically-related activities between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., though competitions were excepted from this measure. The committee also passed rules which mandate off-days for student athletes during the academic year. In regards to the off-campus measure, however, basketball teams, which commonly have the opportunity to go overseas during the offseason, will still be able to do so.

“This has been a house of horrors for us, and a motivating force is to win in venues (like this). We said ‘Let’s be different. Let’s be a Northwestern team that’s tough enough.’”

-Northwestern head basketball coach Chris Collins, via Teddy Greenstein, the Chicago Tribune

Northwestern snapped a major streak with their win versus Ohio State Sunday. The 74-72 victory marked the first time in 40 years that the Wildcats have won in Columbus--a streak which included 34 straight road losses to the Buckeyes. But what does this win mean in the bigger picture of Northwestern basketball this season, as the Wildcats look to break their drought and make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history? The Wildcats remain the singular Division I school to have never made the tournament and, in a season where the Buckeyes cannot seem to find consistency on offense, seemed to have had a lot more riding on the result of yesterday’s matchup than Ohio State did.

Northwestern didn’t dominate the stat sheet in any way, shooting less than 38 percent from the field to Ohio State’s 45.6, and the two were nearly even on rebounds and assists. However, turnovers and free throws--which the Buckeyes have struggled with all year--proved to be a critical factor in deciding the close game. While Northwestern had just eight turnovers on the afternoon, the Buckeyes recorded 13. The Wildcats also went 19-of-24 from the line--including hitting their last five attempts in the final 31 seconds of play. Meanwhile Ohio State hit just 12-of-23 free throw attempts--including missing three in the last 10 seconds of the game. Northwestern was also able to play well as a collective unit with the combination of Scottie Lindsey, who led the Wildcats with 21 points on the day, Vic Law and Bryant McIntosh.

The Wildcats improved to 5-2 in conference play--their best start since 1968--and have ebraska up next at home Thursday.

See what the four-star prospect had to say about his Buckeye offer.

National Signing Day is just over a week away. With just a few spots left to fill in the class of 2017, the Ohio State coaching staff find themselves able to pay more attention towards talented underclassman from around the country.

Keeping a close eye on the recruiting trail for upcoming talent, the Buckeyes have dealt out numerous offers over the last couple of weeks to a decent amount of prospects in both the 2018 and 2019 classes.

Recently, one of the recruits to receive a chance to continue his education and football career at Ohio State was 2019 offensive tackle Will Putnam of Glenwood High School in Chatham, Ill.

Honored to receive an offer from THE Ohio state university! ️‼️ pic.twitter.com/yOWgG5UUp0

— Will Putnam (@BigWillPut) January 18, 2017

“I found out about the Ohio State offer after my coach told me to call a number. Coach [Mark] Pantoni extended the offer to me. He said they really liked my film and how I played,” said Putnam to Land-Grant Holy Land on how he learned of his scholarship.

Living in the Midwest, Putnam, a four-star rated prospect, knows all about the Ohio State program and what it has to offer its players on and off of the football field.

“When I think of Ohio State football, I think of a tradition of winning. A tradition of making their athletes successful during and after college. To have a chance to play for Ohio State is an honor. So many great football players and football moments have come out of Ohio State. To have an opportunity to be apart of that is honoring.”

With nearly two years until he signs with a college, Putnam, who is currently considered the fourth best offensive tackle and 39th ranked overall prospect in the class of 2019, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, is starting to see his recruitment take off. While some recruits commit to a program very early on during the process, Will doesn’t seem to be one of those athletes.

Even though he’s locked in offers from not just Ohio State, but also from the likes of Georgia, Missouri, Northwestern, Illinois and Pittsburgh, he isn’t worried about naming leaders at this time. Playing his recruitment day-by-day, Putnam wants to learn more about the programs that have already gave him a chance to attend their university.

“At this time I'm looking forward to building better relationships with the schools that have offered,” he said of his recruitment.

With an offer from Ohio State now on the table, the next step for Putnam’s recruitment is trying to make it to Columbus to check out what the Buckeyes have to offer in person for himself.

“I have not planned any visits with any university yet. But with that being said I would like to get out to Ohio State sometime this spring.”

The Buckeye is looking for his second Super Bowl ring just months after trying for Gold.

It was less than a year ago that former Ohio State walk-on Nate Ebner asked the New England Patriots for a leave of absence to follow his Olympic dreams, and now he’s chasing another dream into Super Bowl LI.

The Buckeye lead the NFL in 2016 in special team tackles, finishing the regular season with 17 and the postseason with 20. Despite these league-high numbers, Ebner was snubbed from this Pro Bowl — something he would’ve had to miss anyway. He was sidelined during the second half of the AFC Championship game due to a head injury, but has two weeks to recover ahead of the team’s trip to Houston to face the Atlanta Falcons. It is not known if he will play or not.

His success this season proved his Olympic endeavors didn’t interfere with his NFL career, and might have even made him a better player in the long run. Ebner put a brand new two-year, $2.4 million contract on the line for his chance to compete for Olympic gold.

The special team standout took his absence from football in May 2016, and spent the next four months transforming his body back into rugby shape -- having been out of the game since college — and working with teams to compete in Rugby Sevens for the United States in Rio. After being a long shot to even make the roster, Ebner impressed his coaches with his grit and aggression and earned a spot in the Olympics.

“Nate’s a phenomenal athlete, and he’s got a rugby background growing up,” said team captain Madison Hughes, according to USA Today. “He adds a bit of depth to our team. He’s got pace, he’s got physicality, and he’s got a rugby brain.”

The first match in Rio ended in a 17-14 loss to Argentina, followed by a 26-0 victory over Brazil -- in which Ebner scored his first try of the trip. Despite coming home without a medal, playing in the Olympics had a deeper purpose for the Buckeye.

The All-American rugby player at Ohio State had decided in November of his sophomore year, that he wanted to be a walk-on for Ohio State football. The discussion about making that move and his intention of going pro would end up being the last conversation Nate would ever have with his father. Jeff Ebner was brutally murdered in Nov. 2008.

"I first started playing rugby with my dad when I was 6 years old, and we played all the time," Ebner said, according to ABC News. "He was my best friend, no doubt. We did everything together. We would compete in the weight room, on the field, and we had the same humor."

It’s the mantra his father used to repeat, “Finish strong”, that has kept Nate pushing forward and reaching new milestones. After being the only one out of 90 tryouts at Ohio State to walk-on to the football team in 2009, Ebner was later drafted by the Patriots in the 6th round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He earned a Super Bowl ring with the team in 2015 and is looking to add another piece of jewelry to his collection. Despite coming home from Rio without a medal in tow, Ebner was right back in the Patriots’ locker room getting ready for his next shot at greatness.

usa_today_9786518.0.jpg

Vegas likes J.T.’s odds of a resurgence under a new offensive braintrust.

J.T. Barrett didn’t have his best year in 2016. Whether you want to blame coaching, his mechanics, the play of the offensive line, wideouts, or something else, Barrett’s statistical output declined compared to his Top 5 Heisman finish worthy performance in 2014, and Ohio State’s offense, especially the passing game, struggled at times.

But not everybody has lost confidence in Ohio State’s quarterback. According to new odds just released by Bovada, Barrett actually has the best odds to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield leads the field, with 11/2 odds, with Barrett at second at 6/1. Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, who won the award in 2016, is third, at 7/1. The full list can be found below:

Odds to Win the 2017 Heisman Trophy

Baker Mayfield (QB Oklahoma) 11/2

JT Barrett (QB Ohio State) 6/1

Lamar Jackson (QB Louisville) 7/1

Sam Darnold (QB USC) 9/1

Saquon Barkley (RB Penn State) 10/1

Jake Browning (QB Washington) 10/1

Trace McSorley (QB Penn State) 10/1

Deondre Francois (QB Florida State) 12/1

Josh Rosen (QB UCLA) 12/1

Mason Rudolph (QB Oklahoma State) 12/1

Jalen Hurts (QB Alabama) 12/1

Derrius Grice (RB LSU) 15/1

Bo Scarbrough (RB Alabama) 15/1

Nick Fitzgerald (QB Mississippi State) 22/1

Nick Chubb (RB Georgia) 25/1

Kamryn Pettway (RB Auburn) 25/1

Shane Buechele (QB Texas) 35/1

Luke Falk (QB Washington State) 35/1

There’s an argument to be made here, as Ohio State returns the bulk of their offense from last season, and now will work with former Indiana head coach and well-regarded offensive mind Kevin Wilson. Plus, the Buckeyes should have a very strong team next season. But others, like Derrius Guice and Saquon Barkley, will make a Heisman run quite a challenge.

Here’s hoping Bovada’s right and Barrett is able to return to form in 2017.

BUFFALO, NY – OCTOBER 8: Clarke MacArthur #16 of the Ottawa Senators skates with the puck during the game against the Buffalo Sabres at the First Niagara Center on October 8, 2015 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Tom Brenner/ Getty Images)

I can’t imagine the emotions running through Clarke MacArthur’s mind at this moment.

After a long and arduous recuperation process that left the Senators’ left winger admittedly feeling like he was symptom-free and physically ready to return to the lineup, he has been shut down for the remainder of the season after doctors refused to medically clear him.

Leading up to this announcement, MacArthur’s return seemed promising.

Not only was he was back skating and practicing with the team, his general manager even guaranteed on a local sports radio interview that MacArthur would return and play games for the organization this season.

All he had to do was pass a three-hour baseline test.

He not only failed to pass its thresholds, but according to TSN‘s Ian Mendes Senators general manager Pierre Dorion “emphasized that several doctors – including those independent from the Senators organization – came to the conclusion that MacArthur should not lace up his skates again this season.”

Considering the class action lawsuits being levied against professional sports leagues and the cognizance of the long-term impacts on athletes who have suffered significant brain trauma, it’s not a surprise to see teams put these interests ahead of their on-ice interests.

The club’s decision has to be a tough pill to swallow for a player who we have to believe now recognizes the importance of transparency and not hiding symptoms after his trials and tribulations last season.

Mendes even addressed rumours that MacArthur had flown down to Florida “desperately seeking another medical opinion”.

If true, it speaks to the levels that MacArthur is willing to go to to have a chance to return to the lineup, but it puts his career at a crossroads.

Even though all indications are that MacArthur wants to continue his career and play, the reality is that he has not played since October of 2015 and regardless of how he feels physically, something is preventing him from meeting the medical standards needed for clearance.

For MacArthur, it’s got to be gut-wrenching to put in all that work and time and still be no further ahead, but as painful as it is, at least the organization and doctors are being diligent and are putting him in a position where his quality of life isn’t being put at further risk.

Now the Senators are tasked with the reality that MacArthur may never play again.

Many have suggested that the Senators may look for another top six forward to replace MacArthur, but it’s difficult to envision the Senators abandoning their dollar-in/dollar-out policy and having the money or willingness to give up the kind of opportunity cost that would required to bring in a quality talent.

Maybe that attitude could shift if ownership and management is convinced that the playoff revenues could help offset the additional salary the Senators take on, but between Ryan Dzingel, Zack Smith and Mike Hoffman, it’s not like the Senators don’t have quality depth on left wing. Similarly, with Bobby Ryan and Mark Stone playing on the first two lines on the right wing, it’s not like the Senators are going to make a move to improve the top-six there either.

Mind you, between this being Dzingel’s first full season and Smith’s uncertain future as an impending unrestricted free agent, maybe the Senators believe they could use some flexibility there.

They also must be considering whether it’s prudent for a small market team to move a surplus of future assets for a perceived upgrade when there are other areas of weakness — the bottom six depth and the blue line — that can be addressed more efficiently given the parameters from which the Senators have to operate.

Ideally, they can find someone who can not only make the team better now, but also be a part of their long-term vision. Where the Senators have hamstrung themselves a bit recently is through their allocation of resources. Trades were made where sizable opportunity costs were used to bring in decent players who have struggled to push the needle and help transition this team from it’s playoff contender status.

The problem is that the congestion in the standings means that the market is limited with quality options now. Rather than exhaust the organization’s prospect depth on what they feel could be a fit now, it may serve the team’s best interests to see what’s available at the conclusion of the season when the market naturally expands. (As an aside, it still remains to be seen whether the Senators could even afford to get in on the markets for desirable players — think Matt Duchene or Gabriel Landeskog. Since MacArthur will now rest on the shelf for the remainder of the year, maybe that frees up some cash, but that isn’t certain either.)

Besides, it’s possible that the best solution for Ottawa’s forward depth could come from within the organization. Once Colin White’s season ends with Boston College, he may be the best source inexpensive two-way depth and it won’t cost the Senators any future assets to get him into the lineup.
