We discuss the offense and watch to watch for Saturday on our latest podcast.

The last time Ohio State’s offense took the field, things went very bad. The problems that crept up for most of the prior two seasons —an inefficient passing game and a lack of explosive plays— finally came to a head, as the Buckeyes were shut out for the first time in 24 years.

With that embarrassment came change, and Urban Meyer wasted little time in hiring former Indiana Head Coach Kevin Wilson as the Buckeyes’ new Offensive Coordinator. Wilson was the architect for some of the most devastating offenses in college football history, and now gets to utilize the top end talent in Columbus, starting with Ohio State’s annual Spring game on Saturday.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning break down everything you need to watch for during the scrimmage, including:

  • Why Wilson’s hire helps make this years game more than just a glorified practice (2:00)
  • Paying attention to the tempo and philosophy of Wilson’s offense (6:15)
  • Position battles on the offensive line (10:20)
  • The defensive line rotation and improvement in rushing the passer (12:00)
  • A new-look kicking game and the importance of replacing Cameron Johnston (14:10)

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we strongly encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The more we hear from you, the better we can make it. We’re also on Soundcloud, the SB Nation podcast page, and you can subscribe via RSS on your Android and Windows Phone devices here.

Who will take home the famed spring game MVP honors this weekend?

It’s not the most exhilarating game to watch, and it may not tell the average viewer much about the potential of this season’s football team, but the Ohio State spring game has been a coming out party for certain players. Some “spring game most valuable players” did not produce during the season, like Taurian Washington and last year’s MVP, Torrance Gibson, but some have been able to parlay their stand-out spring game performance into on-field success, such as Michael Thomas and Malik Hooker — who recorded a one-handed pick-six and gave us all a preview of his ball-hawking skills before his first career start.

With new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson looking to fix the disastrous passing game, look for a few wide receivers and the star-studded quarterbacks to make plays throughout the 2017 spring game. But with multiple budding stars looking to fill the three starting secondary spots, expect various members of the secondary to make plays.

Let’s see who Buckeye fans should keep an eye on during the spring game:

Binjimen Victor

When Michael Thomas declared for the NFL draft at the end of the 2015 season, the offensive staff chose to replace their most talented wideout with a committee of athletes, rather than a pure wide receiver. Although this decision was made due to a lack of veteran talent at the position, they recruited very well at the position in 2016, with Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor. Mack and Victor are both pure outside receivers who possess legitimate route running techniques and wide receiver intangibles.

While most believed that Mack would make an impact before the lanky 6’4, 180 lb wideout from Florida, it was actually Victor who saw late-season action and was on field during Ohio State’s playoff game against Clemson. Now weighing in at 195 lbs, Victor has the body type to win jump balls and win one-on-one battles against corners.

During the spring game, look for J.T. Barrett (or whichever quarterback is paired up with Victor) to target Victor in the end zone on a fade route. Victor is the first receiver since Thomas who has the ability to win a contested jump ball and it’s almost a lock that it will happen next weekend.

J.K. Dobbins

When we broke down the spring practice positional battles, we mentioned J.K. Dobbins versus Antonio Williams for the RB2 spot behind Mike Weber. Dobbins and Williams possess two different skill-sets with Dobbins being a shifty, elusive back, while Williams is your prototypical bruising back. We mentioned that based off of his high school tape Dobbins should get the nod and thus far, it looks like we were correct.

"Dobbins has passed Antonio (Williams)," Meyer said on March 28th. "Him and Demario (McCall) are battling for that backup spot right now. The best thing that can happen is competition, and we didn’t have much at that position."

With Weber set as the clear starter at tailback, expect Dobbins to get the start on the opposite team and get a good amount of touches. Seeing Dobbins live for the first time against the talented Ohio State front-seven will be something to keep an eye on.

Tate Martell

Tate Martell came to Ohio State as one of the most decorated high school quarterbacks of all-time, and so far throughout the spring, he has made his presence felt as a true freshman.

Martell will show off his lethal dual-threat combo on Saturday, by running the read option and showing off his arm strength. Martell brings a sense of confidence and swagger to the quarterback position — which has lacked recently — and he will definitely be looking to put on a show. With Barrett most likely taking limited snaps, the quarterback competition during the spring game will be fierce.

Eric Glover-Williams

Eric Glover-Williams may not see a ton of playing time during the season at H-back over Parris Campbell (and possibly Demario McCall), but EGW has the skill-set to take home spring game MVP honors on Saturday. He’s made a smooth transition to the offensive side of the ball during spring ball and he is a natural with the football in his hands.

If Glover-Williams gets a good amount of touches (which he should), he definitely has the potential to make a few dazzling plays and take one to the house.

Johnnie Dixon

Johnnie Dixon looked like a promising receiver prospect coming out of high school, but an array of injuries have limited the Florida native to only 7 career receptions during his three year career. Although his speed and quickness may not be where it used to be, it doesn’t mean that Dixon can’t be a contributor during his final year at Ohio State.

Source told me that Johnnie Dixon is feeling "the best he's felt in a long time." The guy spent a lot of time with the ones on Saturday.

— Ari Wasserman (@AriWasserman) April 8, 2017

Through spring practice, it looks like Dixon is as healthy as he’s ever been as a Buckeye — which would be huge for a position with so many question marks. Sure, Victor and K.J. Hill look to be fixtures on the perimeter, but there are rotational spots to be had, and Dixon may be able to make an impact.

As for Saturday, it will be interesting to see if Dixon can gain separation on the perimeter and see how he looks coming in-and-out of breaks. To be honest, getting any sort of consistency out of Dixon at this point in his career would be a plus for this offense and for this positional group. Keep an eye on him against the talented Buckeye secondary.

Others to watch: Kendall Sheffield, K.J. Hill, Demario McCall, Demetrius Knox, Jordan Fuller, Parris Campbell, Dwayne Haskins

The fifth best OLB in the 2018 class will be coming to Columbus this weekend.

Gant to make visit to OSU Spring Game

News became official on Tuesday when linebacker Dallas Gant announced that he will be visiting Ohio State this weekend for their spring game. By now, you already know Gant’s story. However, in case you don’t, Gant is a four-star prospect from Toledo who has held Ohio State in high regard throughout his recruitment. When coach Luke Fickell was in Columbus, the Buckeyes were thought to be the leader and most even expected Gant to make an early announcement in favor of Ohio State. Since Fickell’s departure, some schools have made up some ground, but most think the Buckeyes are still on top.

Change of plans...

— Tom Loy (@TomLoy247) April 12, 2017

This visit is important because Gant is still aiming at building a strong relationship with new linebackers coach Bill Davis. This is a good sign for the Buckeyes because it was initially reported that Gant may have headed North to Ann Arbor for Michigan’s spring game.

A Pope’s top 10

On Tuesday, class of 2018 athlete K’Vaughan Pope (Dinwiddie, VA / Dinwiddie County) released his top 10 on Twitter.

my top ten pic.twitter.com/P1fL4SDjEw

— THE POPE (@Pop3Bad_81) April 11, 2017

The ACC holds the top two spots, as the North Carolina Tar Heels and the defending national champions, the Clemson Tigers, are at the top of Pope’s list.

However, the Buckeyes are in good position at the three spot. There is still plenty of time remaining in the recruitment of Pope—and as we know, recruiting is a wild ride from start to finish.

Pope was just in Chapel Hill, N.C. over the weekend to take in the spring game. A week prior to that, Pope was on the ground in Columbus, Ohio. As the No. 4-ranked athlete in the class makes his unofficial visits across the country, Zach Smith, according to 247sports, is the man leading his recruitment to the Scarlet and Gray.

We’ll keep you updated as more on Pope’s recruitment ramps up in the coming weeks and months.

To the hardwood

With the basketball squad reshuffling again, another big-time splash of a recruitment may be what Thad Matta needs. Mark Smith (Edwardsville, IL / Edwardsville) may be that recruit.

Kentucky just landed a 4* PG for '17. Had also been fighting for Mark Smith, whom #Buckeyes are still trying to woo. Maybe this helps.

— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) April 11, 2017

However, the road to getting top talent is never easy, as the rest of the country’s top programs are vying for the next great athlete.

Even though Smith has a background in baseball, the offers for him to go to the hardwood include some of the top programs. Most notably, schools in the Big Ten conference—Indiana, Michigan State and the Buckeyes—have made Smith an offer to be part of their respective programs.

With still one more official visit to pencil in on his calendar, Smith will make the choice to officially visit Kentucky or Ohio State, according to MLive.com. As Smith makes the decision on where to make that fifth official visit, we’ll keep you posted here at Land-Grant Holy Land.

The Buckeyes’ bats went silent once again.

There are those in the sabermetric community of baseball who argue that the idea of momentum is a myth, that a quality performance by a team cannot be carried over to subsequent games. The Ohio State baseball team is currently performing a case study to prove those folks right.

After scoring 16 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State on Sunday, the Buckeyes managed just four hits in a 7-1 midweek loss to Cincinnati on Tuesday night at home in Columbus, continuing their head-scratching trend in 2017.

The scarlet and gray now stand four games under the .500 mark at 14-18, while the Bearcats evened their record at 16-16. Ohio State had been 5-0 in midweek games this season before this setback, and have still not won more than two games in a row.

There were few offensive bright spots for the club. One was a solo home run by sophomore third baseman Brady Cherry in the first inning. The other was an infield single by freshman right fielder Dominic Canzone, which extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games. The Buckeyes collected just two other hits and got a total of one runner into scoring position.

Connor Curlis, who after a couple of quality midweek starts got a shot in the weekend rotation and struggled mightily, was back on the bump for Ohio State and regained his form. The sophomore lefty tossed six innings, giving up just a run on two hits, walking one and striking out three. But Curlis would not factor into the decision due to his team’s troubles at the plate.

Those troubles were due in large part to Cincinnati’s A.J. Olasz and Jarod Yoakam, who combined to yield a single run on three hits in a combined seven innings of work.

The Buckeyes took the lead early on Cherry’s third longball of the season, a shot to left-center off Olasz.

— Ohio State Baseball (@OhioState_BASE) April 11, 2017

But Ohio State was held silent after that, managing just a single hit in the third inning, keeping the Bearcats in contact. In the sixth, that would pay off for the team from the south, as an R.J. Thompson leadoff triple against Curlis turned into a run on a groundout by A.J. Bumpass that tied the game.

UC took the lead for good in the top of the seventh against Buckeyes reliever Kyle Michalik. A hit by pitch, single, and bunt single with one out loaded the bases, and Treg Haberkorn, the ninth place hitter in the lineup, smoked a double to the left-center gap to bring all three runners around.

Joe Stoll, who was so effective on Sunday against the Nittany Lions, couldn’t keep the deficit where it was in the eighth. Connor McVey singled to lead things off, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Ryan Noda to make it a 5-1 ballgame.

Jace Mercer followed two batters later with a single up the middle under the glove of a diving Jalen Washington at shortstop to score Noda and push the lead out to five. A sacrifice fly by Manny Rodriguez two batters later would bring home another run, and Ohio State had no answers.

Nathan Kroger and A.J. Kullman came out of the Cincinnati bullpen to toss the final two innings and cement the victory.

The Buckeyes will play another midweek game on Wednesday against Eastern Michigan before heading to that state up north for a three-game weekend conference set against Michigan State in East Lansing.

The Buckeye is calling it a career.

Former Ohio State star linebacker James Laurinaitis has announced his retirement from the NFL after eight years in the league:

pic.twitter.com/6kwiNi6UzM

— James Laurinaitis (@JLaurinaitis55) April 11, 2017

After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the St. Louis Rams, the team’s departure for Los Angeles left many of their veteran players looking for roster spots in other cities. In those seven seasons since the team drafted him in 2009, Laurinaitis didn’t miss a single game and set franchise records along the way -- including the team’s record for most tackles.

The move to cut the Buckeye was even further head scratching once you look at his production during his time with the organization. As a Ram, Laurinaitis never had a season with less than 100 total tackles (852 overall), had four seasons with 3.0 sacks or more (16.5 total), and only one season without snagging an interception (10 total).

Unfortunately, the 30 year old had a hard time reclaiming excellence in 2016 after signing with the New Orleans Saints. He only appeared in five games during the regular season, due to being benched and then later being placed on IR. When Laurinaitis was finally healthy enough to return, the team decided to part ways with the linebacker before the end of the season. He went on to workout for several playoff-bound teams, but didn’t ultimately sign with any of them.

usa_today_9515824.0.jpg

The Buckeyes wide receiving core is preparing for a much better season in 2017.

“We came out here with a chip on our shoulder this spring, knowing we had to improve after the past years and not having the successful seasons that we wanted. We knew we had to take a big step, and I think this spring that’s what we’re doing.”

- Parris Campbell via Austin Ward, ESPN

It’s no secret that Ohio State’s passing game was considered sub par last season. Between the inconsistency of quarterback J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes wide receivers, the deep ball was one of the crucial weak spots in the offense and it showed against Clemson in the College Football Playoff. Now, with Barrett returning for 2017, it’s up to the wide receivers on the team this spring to turn the corner for the upcoming season. The depth at the position is arguably there, with Parris Campbell, K.J. Hill, Johnnie Dixon, Binjimen Victor, Terry McLaurin, Austin Mack and more, there’s reason for optimism if you’re Ohio State.

Still, a lot of these players were on the roster last season and couldn’t produce like many thought they would or should. With that said, Campbell and the rest of the receiving core is doing everything they can this spring to prepare themselves for the season and make sure they’re at the top of their game. In the article above, Campbell mentions the extra steps being taken to progress the receiving game including staying on the field practicing with the quarterbacks on the deep ball. The spring game is right around the corner and could be a great look into how the receivers are improving and if Ohio State fans can expect a stronger unit this fall.

“[Mock Draft] 3. Chicago Bears: CB Gareon Conley, Ohio State. 5. Tennessee Titans (from Los Angeles Rams): CB Marshon Lattimore, Ohio State. 13. Arizona Cardinals: S Malik Hooker, Ohio State.”

- Danny Kelly, The Ringer

Three of Ohio State’s prospects are seemingly sure-fire first round picks in the upcoming NFL draft. Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore, and Gareon Conley have all been projected in many mock drafts as being locks in the first round. This latest mock draft from Danny Kelly of The Ringer has Conley being taken with the third overall pick, which is personally the highest I’ve seen him. Lattimore gets taken at fifth to the Titans, while Hooker gets drafted 13th overall to the Cardinals. While that is the lowest I’ve seen Hooker as well, the fit would be excellent for him as a rookie playing alongside outstanding players such as Tyrann Mathieu.

Regardless, it’s a testament to the talent level that resided in Ohio State’s secondary last season that the Buckeyes are essentially about to give three top picks in the NFL draft. Those three players were crucial to Ohio State’s defensive schemes last season and a large reason why they were able to make a run to the College Football Playoff.

“They all want, they all think they're going to, but some kids come in and can't seem to feel the speed of the game at this level, they can't learn the offense as fast, for whatever reason. We're going to have to see where he's at.”

- Zach Smith via Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

There’s another name in the Ohio State receiving game that hasn’t been taken much into consideration. Trevon Grimes is still rehabbing from tearing his ACL during his high school days, but the former five-star has the skill to be a key playmaker for the Buckeyes should he get healthy. While it’s not known if he’ll be able to come back and be the same player that he was before, all signs point to Grimes making a speedy recovery and could potentially have a stronger knee to show for it, according to some of his doctors.

With Grimes recently tweeting out that he’s started sprinting on the knee again, it seems like the young wide receiver is well on his way to getting back to 100 percent again. And that could prove huge for Ohio State as the Buckeyes try to make a leap in the passing game. There’s a lot of hope that he can be a dynamic player for Ohio State at wide receiver but to do that, he’ll need to be healthy. Still, wide receivers coach Zach Smith is excited about the potential that Grimes shows.
