The Buckeyes are struggling and need a Big Ten series win against the Spartans in the worst way.

There’s no way at this point in the season to sugarcoat the struggles of the Ohio State baseball team. The Buckeyes dropped midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday to sub-.500 Cincinnati and Eastern Michigan programs—collecting a mere nine hits and scratching out two runs total. Ohio State has seen its record on the year dip to 14-19, and even worse, to 4-8 at home.

Things have reached the point where after Wednesday night’s defeat the team spent half an hour huddled around head coach Greg Beals in left field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes’ skipper is looking for answers to the team’s poor performance at the plate just as us outside observers are.

“We’ve got to keep mixing up what we’re doing to find the right thing,” Beals told The Lantern after the game. “And it’s not necessarily as much from a personnel standpoint as much as it is what’s going to spark this team, and sometimes there’s personnel decisions to help spark the team and other things that we do from a preparation standpoint to help spark the team.”

The offensive woes are nothing new. This is a club that has had issues hitting all season, ranking in the bottom half of the Big Ten in a host of statistical categories. Ohio State had to expect some drop-off with its bats after losing standouts Ronnie Dawson and Troy Montgomery, along with a solid senior class, after the 2016 season.

But the sharpness of the decline in production is striking. This 2017 iteration of the Buckeyes is batting more than 30 points lower as a team than a season ago, to go along with similar decreases in on-base percentage and slugging, and is scoring roughly two fewer runs per game.

“It’s hitting, and it’s on top of us right now,” Beals said. “We’re simply struggling with the confidence thing. You can just see that in our approach.”

The impact of less offense could perhaps have been absorbed if the pitching staff had duplicated its stalwart efforts from last year, but the team earned run average has jumped nearly 1.50 without the presence of arms like Tanner Tully, Michael Horejsei and John Havird. Injuries and inconsistency have been major issues, too.

Ohio State now must hit the road to take on a solid, balanced Michigan State club in East Lansing, Mich., knowing full well that at 3-6 in conference play, a series win is a necessity. Only the top eight teams in the standings get an invitation to the Big Ten tournament, and right now the Buckeyes are on the outside looking in. Unless something drastically changes, this is not a squad that will see the postseason.

“As a coaching staff and team we’re going to continue to fight,” Beals said. “We gotta’ find that thing that’s going to spark this ballclub.”

Michigan State Spartans (18-11, 2-3 in Big Ten play)

Whereas Ohio State has been anything but a juggernaut offensively, Michigan State comes into the weekend as arguably the most dangerous lineup in the entire conference. Ninth year head coach Jake Boss has the green and white at or near the top of every important statistical category in the Big Ten, placing first or second in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits, runs scored, runs batted in, doubles and home runs.

To put it mildly, the Spartans are the polar opposite of the Buckeyes at the plate. Boss’ bunch combines experience and youth in a well-blended attack that collectively slashes .298/.390/.468 and scores an average of nearly 7.5 runs per game.

At the top of the order, Bryce Kelley, Marty Bechina, and Dan Durkin are all on-base machines and score runs in droves. Bechina also happens to lead the team with six home runs, as he puts together a solid case for all-conference honors in his second season.

The Michigan State lineup is long, meaning that even as a pitcher works his way to the bottom, there is very little change in production and no “easy outs.” The team’s run producers look like this:

  • Alex Troop: .339/.464/.643, six doubles, three home runs, nine RBIs
  • Brandon Hughes: .336/.394/.508, seven doubles, four home runs, 28 RBIs
  • Dan Chmielewski: .282/.336/.409, eight doubles, two home runs, 14 RBIs
  • Matt Byars: .273/.385/.477, nine doubles, three home runs, 17 RBIs
  • Zack McGuire: .297/.368/.532, 11 doubles, five home runs, 21 RBIs

Ohio State’s pitching staff has been knocked around at a .277/.360/.392 clip this season, which could turn this matchup into a very long weekend indeed.

Further complicating matters for the Buckeyes will be a Spartan stable of arms that has been nearly as formidable as its offense. As a staff, MSU allows just over four runs an outing, with a 3.23 earned run average, a .255 opponent batting average and a 1.29 WHIP.

Troop is a powerful bat in the lineup, but doubles as the Friday night starter as well. The redshirt sophomore lefty has been dominant, going 4-2 in eight starts with a 1.69 ERA. In 48 innings of work, Troop has limited opponents to a .222 batting average, sports a WHIP of 1.06 and averages more than four strikeouts per walk allowed.

Following him on Saturday is redshirt junior right-hander Ethan Landon, who has amassed a 2-1 record with a 4.67 ERA in eight appearances that includes seven starts, and junior righty Andrew Gonzalez, who is 3-1 with a 4.40 ERA in seven outings that includes six starts.

But the undisputed strength of Boss’ staff is the bullpen, anchored by senior setup man Walter Borkovich and sophomore closer Riley McCauley. Borkovich, a right-hander from Traverse City, Mich., was already one of the most well-established bullpen weapons in the Big Ten entering the year, and has does nothing but back up that claim with his performance. In 15 relief appearances covering 32 innings, he’s 4-2 with a 1.97 ERA.

McCauley was an instant contributor as a freshman in 2016, and has built upon that success. In 11 appearances, the righty has notched six saves, allowing a total of three runs to score. Providing depth behind he and Borkovich are right-handers Nathan Witt and Jake Lowery, and southpaw (and former Walsh Jesuit High School standout) Joe Mockbee.

The Buckeyes average a shade under five runs per game, though that number is buoyed a bit by a few double-digit explosions throughout the season. Since the calendar turned to April, Ohio State has been outscored 35-27, scoring two runs or fewer in five of its eight games. Against a stingy Michigan State staff, scoring opportunities will be at a premium for the Scarlet and Gray this weekend.

Get excited about football-like substance coming this weekend!

Ohio State football. Is. Back ... Well, sort of.

Team Scarlet and Team Gray renew acquaintances with landscaping duty at Buckeye Grove on the line in your first look at the 2017 Ohio State football team (and our first since that Playoff game we shan't speak of).

Once again, OSU looks to reload after a decently sized exodus to the next level, and while there aren't some of the marquee positional battles of yesteryear, there's still a new look to the secondary and an offense under a first-year offensive coordinator that has to get miles better -- and in a hurry.

The massive national record setting attendance of recent years' spring games is unfortunately logistically impossible; Ohio Stadium's C-Deck is undergoing renovation which means capacity is hard-capped at 84,000. The weather may also not be super great which means if you're going to Saturday's festivities, be sure to bring an umbrella/poncho.

What is the Ohio State spring game?

The Ohio State 2017 LiFE Sports Spring Game, presented by Nationwide, is the football program's annual mid-April intrasquad scrimmage between Team Scarlet and Team Gray at Ohio Stadium. This year it takes place Saturday, April 15 at 12:30 p.m, and should last roughly an hour and a half (an ordinary football game is about three to three and a half hours long).

Breaking with tradition, the spring game will not be preceded this year by an Ohio State men's lacrosse match in The 'Shoe. The men's lax Buckeyes are on the road facing That School Up North, but that's on BTN immediately before the spring game at 10:30 a.m. if you're into that sort of thing.

How similar will this be to a real game?

It's a football-like substance!

The game will feature four 10-minute quarters with a running clock in the second half. Expect shenanigans though, with Urban Meyer and co. routinely stopping live action and treating things like a practice. If you're ready to see if Sean Nuernberger can make six field goals of varying length in succession after a touchdown, get excited.

Due to construction and the weather, the environment won't be as game-like as in some recent years. But you can still expect the coaching staff to put some of their young freshmen in situations that might push their comfort zone as this will be their first time ever playing in Ohio Stadium.

Will Ohio State smash attendance records again this year?

No. For starters, they literally won’t be able to, since capacity at Ohio Stadium will be limited to around 84,000, since Ohio State is doing construction on C Deck. Plus, current weather forecasts are projecting rain as pretty likely on Saturday, and less than perfect weather means the stadium might not be completely full.

But don’t worry that Ohio State football has peaked and recruits won’t want to come here if ONLY say, 65,000 people show up to watch a practice. It’ll be fine.

How can I watch the spring game?

The Big Ten Network will be broadcasting the spring game Saturday. The game will also be available for streaming online (and on your tablet and smartphones) on BTN2Go.

You can find BTN on Spectrum Columbus/Delaware on Channel 333 HD/58 SD, on WOW! at channels 219 HD/87 SD, nationally on DirecTV on channel 610, on DISH on channel 405/410, and on AT&T U-verse channel 1650 HD/650.

Former Ohio State coach Glen Mason will be in the booth providing commentary for the game along with former Buckeye linebacker Bobby Carpenter on the sidelines. BTN staple Kevin Kugler will be on the mic for play-by-play. The familiar duo of Paul Keels and Jim Lachey will be on the radio call.

What are the rosters for each team?

They’re not out yet, but once they are, we’ll feature them right here.

What (if any) are the recruiting implications of this weekend?

Of course there are recruiting implications. If you can get 60,000+ fans to show up for a practice, wouldn’t you want recruits to see that? Some of Ohio State’s biggest recruiting targets should be in attendance, from the top player in the state, offensive lineman Jackson Carman (who the Buckeyes are battling Clemson for), to top-ranked defensive end, and Penn State commit, Micah Parsons, to current Buckeye commit Emory Jones, to five-star defensive back Patrick Surtain Jr, and many more. Don’t be shocked if a player pulls the trigger and commits to the Buckeyes during, or after, the game.

What are the anticipated position battles?

There are a few that are probably worth a closer look.

J.T. Barrett is clearly entrenched as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, and as a redshirt senior, probably won’t play too much on Saturday. But the Buckeyes have recruited a bevy of blue-chip options, and the exact pecking order behind him could potentially change.

The leader in the backup clubhouse is Joe Burrow, a redshirt sophomore from Athens. Burrow looked good last season as Barrett’s backup, and has the most experience. But two other recent additions, redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins, and true freshman Tate Martell, have much stronger recruiting pedigrees, and could potentially pass him with a strong offseason.

With Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day itching to repair Ohio State’s struggling passing game, figure to see passes flying early and often in the spring game. This should be a fun chance to get a glimpse at the future of the most important position for the Buckeyes.

Another will be in the secondary. This position group experienced a ton of attrition, as Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley are about to become exceptionally wealthy men thanks to the NFL Draft. Early enrollees, like JUCO Kendall Sheffield, and mega recruits like Jeffery Okudah and Shaun Wade, will show off and be in the mix, along with returning players, like Rodjay Burns, Damon Arnette and Jahsen Wint. The continued excellence of this position group will be critical for the Buckeyes to make another run at the Playoff, and it’ll unquestionably require some newcomers.

Finally, you’ll want to check out who is catching passes. The spring game could start the resurgence of the tight end position as an offensive threat, now that Wilson is calling the shots, so players like A.J Alexander, Luke Farrell and Jake Hausmann could have big games. And of course, which wideouts perform will be worth watching. Will Buckeye vets, like Johnnie Dixon or Parris Campbell, finally start to reach their potential? Will Eric Glover-Williams shine in his new position? Will younger players, like Binjimen Victor or Austin Mack, stake a claim for more playing time? We might get a clue tomorrow.

Have another specific question?

Ask us in the comments here or on Twitter or Facebook. We’ll be checking all of those regularly and will do our best to get your questions answered.

One of the nation’s very best linebackers arrives in Columbus for a visit with the Buckeyes

Tuliaupupu arrives in Columbus

We are now just one day away from Ohio State’s annual spring game showdown in Columbus, which also means a major recruiting weekend is on deck for the Buckeyes. But before that comes about, Ohio State welcomed 2018 inside linebacker Solomon Tuliaupupu, who made his way from California and arrived at Ohio State yesterday evening, to campus to check out what the Scarlet and Gray have to offer.

We have arrived at THE Ohio St. #Buckeyes pic.twitter.com/tT6OMakYKP

— Solomon Tuliaupupu (@nokeakua) April 13, 2017

Tuliaupupu is a four-star prospect and received 31 offers including some of the nations very best programs. When schools like Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Stanford, UCLA, USC and many, many more are in pursuit, it says all you need to know about the Mater Dai (CA) standout and the third highest graded player at his position.

With all of that being said, the 247Sports Crystal Ball currently pegs the 6-foot-3, 230-pounder to stay in Cali and suit up for Clay Helton and the Trojans in Los Angeles. This visit is a big one if the Buckeyes want to stand any realistic chance in this race. Otherwise, it may be a situation much like ‘18 inside linebacker Palaie Gaoteote — a big-time Ohio State target who would instead choose USC.

Mitchell updates recruitment

Sticking to the linebacker position, it was just six days ago that ‘18 inside linebacker Teradja Mitchell was on campus for a visit with the Buckeyes. The visit shifted the thoughts for some on where he may end up, which originally widely favored Florida State.

On Thursday, Rivals.com’s Adam Friedman caught up with the five-star prospect to speak about that very visit to Ohio State and got the inside scoop on the recruitment for Mitchell.

The first time I went down to Ohio State I didn't really get a feel for it because it was a game and there were so many people," Mitchell said. "I didn't really get a chance to talk with many of the coaches. This time around I got to talk to the coaches, get a good feel for the program and saw what it was all about. I liked their approach towards me because they didn't just talk about football. They talked a lot about life after football. It's a great school and great public university not even considering the football part.

The Bishop Sullivan Catholic (VA) talent continued by telling Friedman that he spent time with Bill Davis, Urban Meyer and Zach Smith. He also was able to talk with cornerback Wayne Davis and defensive end Jalyn Holmes, who ultimately did what the Buckeyes hope Mitchell does -- leave the state of Virginia and come play for Ohio State.

Mitchell, the No. 2 inside linebacker in the class, relayed to Friedman that Ohio State is indeed in his top five along with Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and LSU. The 6-foot-2, 232-pounder also stated that he is hoping to commit in the next couple of months and that every school is tied for his services at this time.

Perhaps the biggest thing to take from the chat with Mitchell is that he is expecting to visit Florida State again next month. For now, Ohio State seems to be in the lead and it’s not surprising that Mitchell didn’t reveal that, but no matter the case, they have to outlast that visit to Tallahassee because the Seminoles seem to be the primary competition.

Quick Hits

  • According to Bill Greene of Scout.com, ‘18 offensive guard Fredrick Scruggs of Cathedral Prep (PA) has Ohio State and Penn State on top for now. The four-star prospect will likely not make a decision any time soon as he has future visits lined up.
  • ‘18 cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who was an Ohio State target, did as was expected on Thursday when he committed to Florida State.
  • ‘17 wide receiver Elijah Gardiner, who signed with Ohio State in February, will make his way up to Columbus to check out the spring game on Saturday.

The Buckeyes’ lone senior this past season is headed to the next level.

For the second consecutive year, the Ohio State women’s basketball team watched as one of its members had her name called on draft night. Shayla Cooper, who just completed her senior season for the Buckeyes, was selected by the Connecticut Sun with the No. 13 pick in the WNBA draft on Thursday night.

Cooper, a native of Norcross, GA who transferred to Ohio State from Georgetown, was the lone senior for the 2016-17 squad. She ranked third on the team in scoring at 10.5 points per game, second in rebounding at 6.7 per game, and dished out 2.1 assists per game while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and notching six double-doubles.

The Buckeyes, who went 28-7 on the year, won a share of the Big Ten regular season title, tying atop the standings with Maryland, and went into the conference tournament with the top seed. The team received a bid to the NCAA tournament as a five seed, and progressed to the Sweet 16 before being knocked off by Notre Dame, the No. 1 seed in the Lexington Region.

For her career in scarlet and gray, Cooper appeared in 90 games, including 44 starts. She scored over 1,000 career points, averaging 11.5 per game while pulling down 7.5 boards, and made a reputation for herself as a player who could score on the perimeter, in the paint, or off the dribble.

What Cooper will perhaps be best remembered for, though, was her toughness and versatility. At 6’2, she had no problems mixing it up down low and gave Ohio State an edge to its personality. Cooper could defend all five positions on the court, and her all-around game led to second-team All-Big selections as both a junior and senior.

The top pick in this year’s WNBA draft was Kelsey Plum of Washington, who coincidentally was recruited to the Huskies by current Buckeye head coach Kevin McGuff during his tenure there. Plum, who broke the NCAA’s all-time career scoring record this past season, was selected by San Antonio. The Stars received the top pick after amassing a 7-27 record in 2016.

A year ago, Ohio State’s Ameryst Alston was selected 24th overall by the New York Liberty. Cooper will now join her among the ranks of professional Buckeyes.

The 21st season of the WNBA will get underway on Saturday, May 13th. Cooper and Connecticut will host Atlanta on that night in the Mohegan Sun Arena.

The likely 1st-rounders will be on hand in Philly to hear their names called.

Ohio State is going to be pouring some high-round picks into this year’s NFL Draft, and a few of them will be on hand when their names are called. Per NFL Director of Football Communications Randall Liu, cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley will both attend the draft festivities in Philadelphia.

Lattimore and Conley played key roles in Ohio State’s lockdown secondary in 2016, combining for eight interceptions, 17 pass breakups, and 59 total tackles. Alongside other soon-to-be draftee Malik Hooker, Lattimore and Conley carried the Buckeyes to a No. 8 overall ranking in pass defense.

SB Nation’s draft rankings have Lattimore as the top corner available in this year’s class, with Conley as a respectable No. 3. Both have the skills, physicality, and football smarts to start very quickly at the next level—particularly for a team like the Tennessee Titans, who grabbed Lattimore at No. 5 in SB Nation’s mock draft.

Ohio State produced two of the most impactful rookies in the NFL last season in Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott and Chargers DE Joey Bosa. With the monstrous talent coming out of Columbus this season—from the lockdown corners to do-it-all LB Raekwon McMillan to stud punter Cameron Johnston—there’s no reason to think former Buckeyes can’t repeat the feat this year.

Plenty of other big names will be in Philadelphia with the top Buckeye corners. Clemson QB Deshaun Watson will be there—remember what he did the last time they were all in a room together?—as well as other College Football Playoff standouts Jonathan Allen (DT, Alabama) and John Ross (WR, Washington). The most notable exception is likely No. 1 overall pick Myles Garrett, who will watch the event from home, presumably so his family is on hand to console him if he’s taken by Cleveland.

See the full list of 22 attendees below.

The spectacle of the Ohio State Spring Game is upon us. This is one of the biggest offseason events that the Buckeyes host and this year will be no different. With many blue-chip recruits of all ranks, the Buckeyes will look to rise up in the rankings with a great showing, that is looking like it won’t disappoint.

*** The storylines will feature a brand new Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach in Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, it will return a good amount of starters from last season with J.T. Barrett on offense and the majority of the Defensive Lineman. The inexperience and the lack of creativity and variety was a problem, but with a few old pieces in places and some new faces on the coaching staff, this makes for another intriguing storyline to follow. Look for a more improved offense that will tire out the defense with their upgraded tempo. Will they find their next version of Curtis Samuel? Will they find their next Devin Smith, Braxton Miller or Mike Thomas?

*** Zach Smith and Tony Alford will be tasked with providing playmakers and balance for the Buckeyes offense with members of their respective units. Will Coach Smith find the next stars for his unit? He needs Zone 6 to produce another playmaker and establish his role in the offense. The Buckeyes will have the talent, but can they find the playmakers to follow what Mike Thomas, Devin Smith, and Braxton Miller have built? Will Coach Alford they find their next version of Curtis Samuel or the next Ezekiel Elliott? He has Mike Weber, who acted as their workhorse, but will Antonio Williams and J.K Dobbins step up? Or can walk-on Jerimiah Knight carve out a steady role for himself?

*** Look for new Linebackers Coach Bill Davis to find his niche from within the Schiano captained defense. He took over for Luke Fickell and he looks to use his extensive NFL coaching experiences to bridge the gap left by Fickell. He lost Raekwon McMillan, but he retained Chris Worley, who is now the starter at the Mike spot, Dante Booker, who is coming off of an injury-plagued season and Jerome Baker, who had a coming out party last season. He also has a lot of talented personnel waiting for their chance to reload the Buckeyes.

*** Coach Schiano and Coach Coombs will have the task of rebuilding the Scarlet Curtain or B.I.A., the Best In America. Three of their starters, Malik Hooker, Garon Conley and Marshon Lattimore left for the NFL, leaving only Damon Webb as the only returning starter. The Buckeyes signed five talented DB’s during NSD and they will look to make an immediate impact or contribution to the lack of established starters.

*** Last, but not least, the recruiting aspect for this game will be one of great importance. Many blue-chippers will come to see if their prospective unit succeeds or what improvements have been made. The potential of someone pledging their allegiance to the Buckeyes are good, but only time will tell. Both the offense and the defense need to put on a show, and with a few Buckeye commits present, you really never know what could occur.

*** P.S. The BTN chose to air the Ohio State Spring Game over TTUN’s. Lol!

The five-time Super Bowl champion head coach will address Ohio high school football coaches tonight.

“How does Bill Belichick just continue to move the right pieces in, the right people in and be so professional about what they do? I admire that ... I’m so infatuated with that and I thought it would be great for our Ohio high school coaches to hear that.”

Tim Hinton, Ohio State Executive Director for Football Operations via Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

When Ohio State’s annual coaches clinic kicks off tonight, the first speaker will be New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Even though Belichick has long relationships with Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano, getting Belichick to come and speak at the event is a bit of a surprise. Belichick is a couple months removed from winning his fifth Super Bowl as New England’s head coach, and the NFL Draft is just a couple weeks away. This will be Belichick’s second visit to Columbus in a month, as he attended Ohio State’s Pro Day in March.

Tim Hinton, who puts the coaches clinic together, wanted to get Belichick as the featured speaker as he was watching the Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl in February. With the consistency and professionalism the Patriots always seem to display, Hinton thought that bringing in Belichick to speak would greatly benefit some of Ohio’s high school football coaches. While the event is technically for the high school football coaches, it could also help some of the coaches on Ohio State’s staff to hear some words of wisdom from one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. Boston College head coach Steve Addazio and College Football Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz will also be speaking, as well as a number of Ohio State assistant coaches.

“Some of the biggest components of the defense now gone, and a bad taste in the mouths of the fans after the last lackluster performance, but there is still hope for the Buckeyes. A bevy of young talent is emerging during spring practice, and will soon be on display in Ohio Stadium.”

Nicholas McWilliams, The Lantern

When Ohio State takes the field in 2017, gone will be defenders Marshon Lattimore, Gareon Conley, Malik Hooker, and Raekwon McMillan. It’s never easy to replace talent like those four players, but it is something that Urban Meyer has become quite familiar with. Prior to last season, Ohio State had to replace even more starters on defense, and all the Buckeyes did was field one of the best defenses in the country. Now a new crop of stars must step up to fill the voids and help the Buckeyes make another run at the College Football Playoff.

Who might some of the players to ease the departures on defense? The first name that comes to mind is Dante Booker. The linebacker was a starter at linebacker last year, but suffered a knee injury in the season opener. After missing pretty much the whole year, Booker is itching to get back on the field and make up for lost time.

Tracy Sprinkle is another Buckeye who was showing some promise on the field, but saw his season cut short in the season opener. While Sprinkle might not be a starter at defensive tackle, he certainly will be a key piece on the interior of the line with the talent that is already in place on the defensive line, and with the way Ohio State substitutes players in to keep players fresh.

The third Buckeye defender who could make some noise this year actually started last year opposite Malik Hooker at safety. Damon Webb picked off a pass and recorded 57 tackles, and Ohio State is going to need even more from him this year. With Ohio State needing to replace three starters in the secondary, Webb’s veteran presence will be relied on heavily as the new starters find their legs.

“The objective for 2017-18 is to become a dominant player, not just a player that can be a second option. If he’s in college basketball, he wants to be a first option. He’s got to be a flat-out dominant player across the board, no question. If he’s at the pro level, that’s a different story. He’ll have to accept his role.”

Ryan Thompson, father of Trevor Thompson via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Many thought Trevor Thompson was a little crazy when he declared for the NBA Draft last year after averaging 6.5 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game in 17.9 minutes on the floor. Thompson didn’t hire an agent, and returned to Ohio State, where he averaged nearly a double-double in 23 minutes per game. Thompson improved his game considerably as a redshirt junior in Columbus, and now is again exploring his professional options.

Much like last year, Thompson isn’t hiring an agent, and can decide to return to school up until 10 days following the NBA Draft Combine, which is held May 9-14. With the strides Thompson made this year, as well as the lack of depth Ohio State has at the center position, it might be possible to see Thompson return to Ohio State for his senior season. The choice might not be quite as easy as last year though, since Thompson has improved his game. Even though he currently doesn’t appear in any NBA mock drafts, a strong combine showing could generate some interest and make Thompson think a little longer about his decision than he had to last season, when returning to school was by far the best option.

After three years at Ohio State, center David Bell has announced he will be transferring to Jacksonville University. The Cleveland native was redshirted in the 2014-15 season, and played in 38 games over the past two years. Bell struggled to get time on the floor, averaging just 5.7 minutes per game in 2015-16 and 6.1 minutes per game this season. Bell’s best game came early on in the 2015-16 season when he scored seven points in 19 minutes against Air Force. With Bell transferring and Trevor Thompson declaring for the NBA Draft, Ohio State could be thin at center next year if Thompson decides not to return to school.
