Ohio State lost both games of a doubleheader in walk-off fashion as the Musketeers swept the series.

Mother Nature forced opening weekend at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus to be cut short for the Ohio State baseball team. After playing and losing their home opener to Xavier on Saturday, the Buckeyes were forced to hit the road to complete the series with the Musketeers in Cincinnati. The road proved to be no more kind than home for the team, though, as Ohio State dropped both games of a doubleheader on Sunday in walk-off fashion.

The Buckeyes lost their second consecutive series, and now stand at 8-11 on the season. The team will play its next nine games at home, though, in what may represent the greatest opportunity to get things turned around.

Game one

Ohio State fought back from an early deficit in the first game of the double dip to take a lead in the middle innings. But Xavier tied things in the seventh and then walked off a 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth, both via run-scoring sacrifice flies by Mitch Gallagher.

Gallagher went 1-for-3 for the Musketeers, driving in three runs. Will Larue and Matt Fallon each added two hits and an RBI apiece in the winning effort.

The loss went to Kyle Michalik, who was responsible for the game-winning run in relief.

Co-captain Jalen Washington had a stellar game at the plate for Ohio State, homering twice and driving in three runs. Tyler Cowles also homered and drove in a run as part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, while Tre’ Gantt also contributed a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4, continuing his reached base safely streak in every game thus far in the season.

Ryan Feltner was on the mound for the Buckeyes, and after a rough start, settled in pretty nicely. The sophomore right-hander worked 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, walking three and striking out seven. Feltner did not factor into the decision.

Xavier used just two arms all game, getting five innings out of starter Garrett Schilling, who took a no-decision, and four from Trey Schramm, who didn’t allow a run and earned his first win of the season.

The Musketeers put up a crooked number on Feltner in the home half of the second, taking an early 3-0 lead. Sam Flamini led off with a single and Nate Monastra and Nate Soria each walked, loading the bases with nobody out. Larue then sent a sacrifice fly to score Flamini, Fallon executed a squeeze bunt to score Monastra, and Gallagher delivered an RBI single to bring Soria plateward.

Ohio State bounced back in both the top of the third and the top of the fourth, getting a run back in each thanks to leadoff solo home runs by Cowles and Washington.

In the fifth, the Buckeyes took a 4-3 lead when Washington hit his second longball of the day, with two-outs and Jacob Barnwell aboard. It was the last time the scarlet and gray would push anything across.

A leadoff walk in the seventh and a leadoff hit by pitch in the ninth came back to bite Ohio State. In each instance, those runners came around to score on Gallagher’s sacrifice flies, pushing Xavier over the top.

Game two

Ohio State lost in a walk-off once again in game two, as closer Yianni Pavlopoulos gave up a two-run home run to Joe Gellenbeck in the bottom of the ninth. Xavier claimed a 6-5 victory.

The loss overshadowed a monster game for Noah McGowan, who hit three home runs and drove in all five runs for the Buckeyes.

The three jacks were the junior’s third, fourth, and fifth roundtrippers of the season. The third of those came in the top of the ninth, breaking a 4-4 tie.

But Pavlopoulos hit the leadoff hitter in the bottom half, and Gellenbeck sent a long fly over the wall in right-center.

Adam Niemeyer took the ball for the Buckeyes, but had a short start in chilly conditions in Cincinnati. The righty went 4.1 innings, allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out a season-high six batters.

It was once again the longball that Ohio State utilized to get on the board first. This time it was McGowan, who took Musketeers’ starter Greg Jacknewitz deep with two out in the third for a 1-0 lead.

Xavier answered in the bottom half, though, when a Blaine Griffiths double off Niemeyer scored Joe Gellenbeck with two outs.

The score stayed knotted at one until the seventh, when McGowan once again hit a big fly. Noah West led off the inning with a single and Barnwell walked. With Musketeers’ reliever Conor Grammes on the mound, the Buckeye junior hit one over the wall in left field for a 4-1 advantage.

Grammes led off the bottom half of the frame against Woodby, and returned the favor with a solo homer of his own to trim the deficit to two.

The margin for error was erased in the bottom of the eighth, when Xavier made it a tie ballgame. A one-out single by Rylan Bannon against lefty Joe Stoll gave the Musketeers life, and after Curtiss Irving relieved, a walk to Monastra and a single by Soria brought the run around.

An infield single by Grammes loaded the bases and prompted Ohio State head coach Greg Beals to go to the bullpen for the third arm of the inning in Jake Vance. Vance walked Larue to force home the tying run.

But McGowan came through again in the top of the ninth, hitting his third longball of the game off Xavier reliever David Williams. It would go for naught, though, with the Musketeers claiming another dramatic win.

Up next, the Buckeyes will host Youngstown State in a midweek matchup on Tuesday night at Bill Davis Stadium before opening Big Ten play against Minnesota at home next Friday.

The Buckeyes overcame a second half run by the Wildcats to survive and advance.

Wins never come easy in the NCAA tournament, and Sunday’s matchup between Ohio State and Kentucky bore that out. After leading by as many as 19 points, the Buckeyes had to fend off a wild comeback by the Wildcats to notch a 82-68 victory and advance to Sweet 16.

Kentucky, playing on its home floor, never had a lead, but pulled to within one point with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Ohio State then went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to pull away.

Kelsey Mitchell, the Big Ten’s player of the year, bounced back from less than stellar performances her past two games, scoring 21 points to lead the Buckeyes. 19 of those 21 came in the first half, though, as the Wildcats threw traps and double teams at Ohio State’s star. It meant the Buckeyes needed others to step up, and that’s exactly what Shayla Cooper, Tori McCoy, and Linnae Harper did.

Cooper scored 15 and grabbed eight rebounds, while McCoy put up a double-double with 14 and 12. Harper, though, who started her college career with Kentucky, was the ultimate X-factor. The junior from Chicago affected every facet of the game, finishing with 12 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.

The Wildcats were led by senior Makayla Epps, who scored 21 points. Fellow senior Evelyn Akhator added 14 points and a monster 23 rebounds, while sophomore Maci Morris scored 12.

Mitchell started the game in a great rhythm, scoring 10 of Ohio State’s first 12 points. Akhator scored the first six for Kentucky, and she, Epps, and Morris scored all but two of the team’s points in the first quarter. After a tight ten minutes, the Buckeyes held a 20-16 lead.

The second quarter began with a 14-2 Ohio State run, with Cooper knocking down a three-pointer and a jumper in that span. Mitchell hit a three and a jumper of her own, and the lead was 34-18 with six minutes remaining in the half.

Sierra Calhoun knocked down a pair of threes and Harper hit a jumper, as the scarlet and gray continued to turn it on. Mitchell scored the squad’s final four points of the frame, sending the Buckeyes to the locker room with a commanding 46-31 advantage.

The 19 first half points for Mitchell came on 7-for-11 shooting. Meanwhile, Ohio State held Kentucky to a dismal 29 percent from the floor, including just 1-for-8 from three-point range.

The Buckeyes scored the first four points after the half thanks to layups by McCoy and Calhoun, but the Wildcats battled back, going on a 10-2 run and then following that up with a 7-0 run. Epps and Morris led the way on offense, and a locker room adjustment to start doubling Mitchell paid dividends.

Mitchell was just 1-for-6 in the quarter and turned the ball over twice. Kentucky had cut the lead to just eight points with ten minutes to play.

In the final frame, an Epps jumper and a Morris triple cut the lead to three right out of the gate. Harper responded by scoring four straight against her former teammates, but Epps kept making shots, and an elbow jumper made it a 65-64 ballgame.

That’s when Ohio State went on the run that would ultimately put the game out of reach. Cooper scored eight of the team’s final 10 points, stepping up as Mitchell was taken away by Kentucky’s defense.

So the Buckeyes are Sweet 16 bound. They await the winner of tonight’s Notre Dame-Purdue second round game. The Irish are the top seed in the region, while the Boilermakers eliminated Ohio State from the Big Ten tournament two weekends ago, so regardless of opponent, moving on to the Elite 8 will be the greatest challenge the team has faced to date this season.

The Buckeyes will play No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday.

With Wisconsin losing to Penn State in overtime in the Big Ten Tournament championship game last night, Ohio State had their NCAA Tournament hopes renewed and today, during the selection show on ESPNU, the Buckeyes had their dreams come true as they officially received an at large bid to the tourney.

The Buckeyes will play No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth in Fargo, North Dakota on Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET. It’s OSU’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in hockey since 2009. They came within a whisker of making it three years ago, losing to Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament title game, but Wisconsin returned the favor this year and lost in a similar fashion, giving Ohio State their opening.

OSU effectively controlled their own destiny during the Big Ten Tournament, just needing to eliminate Wisconsin and prevent them from winning the conference tournament and receiving an autobid. But the Buckeyes stumbled and fell 2-1 on Friday, giving UW an opening.

It seemed likely that UW would triumph over Penn State, who were playing their third game in three days, with Friday’s win over Minnesota coming in double overtime. Things did not look good for the Bucks. But somehow, Penn State rallied to clinch an NCAA appearance and beat UW in double overtime once again.

It was one of the more impressive postseason conference tournament runs you’ll see, and it ended up saving Ohio State’s season, letting them squeak in with what likely turned out to be the last at large bid.

But if you’re Ohio State, you take it no matter how you got it and just focus on beating Minnesota-Duluth. The team looked like it was putting things together down the stretch until stumbling against Wisconsin on Friday. And this team did win at No. 1 Denver earlier in the season. Anything can happen and it doesn’t matter how you get in as long as you get in.

Kyle Snyder overcame a rib injury to win his second NCAA title

There was a time Friday night after his quarterfinal match against Minnesota’s Michael Kroells where there was a question as to whether Kyle Snyder would even be able to continue wrestling. The Buckeye junior sustained a rib injury that left him in obvious pain. Head coach Tom Ryan came to Snyder and told him that if he wanted to default out of the tournament to protect himself for the upcoming US World Team Trials that he would understand. Snyder was having none of it, though. He decided to wrestle and nearly tech-falled his semifinal opponent.

The win earned Snyder a finals matchup with Wisconsin’s Connor Medberry. Snyder had previously defeated Medberry during the Big Ten finals in a closely contested match. With Snyder at less than 100 percent against an opponent that outweighed him by nearly 40 pounds, a repeat victory was no sure thing. As it turned out, it was another close battle. Snyder started things off with an absolutely massive crotchlift of the larger Medberry that brought the crowd to its feet. Snyder would go on to win the match 6-3 earning is second consecutive NCAA Heavyweight crown.

The win caps an impressive 12 months that saw Snyder win an Olympic championship, a national championship, a Big Ten championship and countless victories around the world. Not bad for a guy who just recently became old enough to buy beer.

There had been some speculation as to whether or not Snyder would return to Ohio State for his senior season, but he put an end to that telling the Dispatch’s Bill Rabinowitz that he will be back. That’s great for the Buckeyes and bad news for the rest of the heavyweight division.

Next up for Snyder will be the US World Team trials where he will be the heavy favorite.

Congrats!

The Buckeyes and Musketeers engaged in an epic pitchers’ duel in the home opener at Bill Davis Stadium

After spending the first month of the season on the road, the Ohio State baseball team wanted to play as much as possible on their home field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes got their wish in the home opener on Saturday afternoon, hosting Xavier in a marathon 13-inning affair.

Ohio State fell, 3-2, on a day when temperatures hovered just above freezing. Redshirt junior Curtiss Irving yielded the winning run to the Musketeers in the top of the 13th with a bases loaded, full count walk. The run batted in was credited to Joe Gellenbeck, with the run scored by Conor Grammes.

Tre’ Gantt singled in the bottom of the inning to put the tying run on base, but his teammates couldn’t bring him around. Gantt had three hits in the game, the lone offensive bright spot.

In a game in which all of the scoring before the extra frames happened in the first three innings, Ohio State was held to just four hits and struck out 17 times, and the Buckeye bullpen could only hold out for so long.

Kyle Michalik, Seth Kinker, and Yianni Pavlopoulos combined to toss seven scoreless innings of relief for the scarlet and gray.

Jake Post started on the mound for Ohio State, and had kind of an all-or-nothing-day in the chilly conditions. In five innings of work, the redshirt senior right-hander allowed two runs on six hits, walking four and striking out six. Post did not figure into the decision.

Also not figuring in the decision was the Musketeers’ Zac Lowther, though through no fault of his own. The junior southpaw allowed just one hit in his six innings of work, but gave up two runs, only one of which was earned. Lowther walked three batters, but also set down 11 via the strikeout.

Xavier struck first, putting up a run on Post in the top of the first inning. Mitch Gallagher led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a fly ball to center off the bat of Sam Flamini. A two-out single by Nate Monastra brought him plateward for the early lead.

The Musketeers tacked on one more in the second after Lowther struck out the side in the bottom of the first. Conor Grammes hit a leadoff double to right-center and Will Larue singled, putting runners on the corners. A safety squeeze by Matt Fallon scored Grammes.

Ohio State erased the deficit in half in the bottom of the third, scoring its first runs of the season at home. Shea Murray worked a leadoff walk, and Lowther committed a throwing error when Jacob Barnwell attempted a sacrifice bunt, giving the Buckeyes two on with nobody out. After Tre’ Gantt bunted both runners over, Jalen Washington sent a fly ball to center field, scoring Murray. Noah McGowan followed with a single to score Barnwell and tie the game 2-2.

Post and Lowther held both teams’ bats in check from there, turning things over to their respective bullpens with the game still knotted at two runs apiece.

The relief corps on both sides did their job and then some. Michalik allowed a lone hit in two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh for Ohio State, Kinker followed by putting three zeroes of his own on the board, and Pavlopoulos worked through two without allowing a run. For Xavier, Kent tossed 4.1 scoreless frames, and Taylor Williams worked the final X to lock down the win.

The Buckeyes and Musketeers will now shift venues to Cincinnati thanks to predicted inclement weather in Columbus. A Sunday doubleheader at Hayden Field will get started at noon.
