DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste (transfer to Notre Dame, Washington Commanders)

Pre-Draft Analysis

Jean-Baptiste has the length and upper-body strength to take on and shed tight ends. He's a rangy run-defender who closes well chasing from the backside. Jean-Baptiste flashes the ability to get off blocks and chases with good effort rushing the passer. He is not a polished hand fighter or counterpuncher, but has the traits to develop as a pass-rusher.

Just sayin': Drafted #2 in the 7th round (#222 overall) by Washington.

Roger Goodell (official thread)

Roger Goodell addresses college football's transfer portal, NIL issues at 2024 NFL Draft: 'Who's in control?'

The NFL commissioner could be a beacon of hope for college football.

"Who is in control?" Goodell said on The Pat McAfee Show. "Is it the NCAA, or is it the conferences? They're moving around. I don't know enough about it right now, but if anybody asks us for help, we're going to try to do our best."

The newest NIL regulations require athletes to disclose any deal of more than $600 to their schools, marking a step toward financial transparency. It still, however, prohibits direct pay-for-play compensation from universities.

"Guys are staying in college football because they're getting paid," said Goodell. "I don't think that's a bad thing because they're still in a college program. I'm a big believer in college football. I love it. I watch it all day. But I also think they make stars for our players. They give them that platform. They get them ready to play the professional game both physically, mentally and otherwise. So I think it works."

Goodell said he does not see a future wherein college football and the NFL merge, but he aims to be a problem-solver for the college game, which each year sends its biggest stars to the professional level.

"We work really closely with college football," said Goodell. "I'm meeting with them in the next week. We want to try to help."

Thomas Fidone (Nebraska tight end)

Matt Rhule claims 'every team in the country' is trying to convince one of Nebraska's top players to transfer

The Huskers are fighting to keep one of their top players from transferring.

Nebraska football has yet to have a current player enter the transfer portal during the active window, but that could soon change after the Huskers wrapped up their spring practice on Saturday with a scrimmage inside Memorial Stadium. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said earlier in April that some players on his roster were contacted by other teams gauging their interest in entering the transfer portal ahead of the spring window. On Saturday, he revealed tight end Thomas Fidone as one of the top Nebraska players with outside interest.

"Every team in the country is trying to get him to leave and go there," Rhule said. "The kid is a Nebraska Cornhusker through and through."

Fidone rated as a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 1 tight end in the 2021 recruiting class. After suffering a pair of ACL injuries in his first two seasons at Nebraska, the 6-foot-6, 250-pound played in all 12 games with eight starts as a sophomore in 2023.

Fidone led the Huskers with four touchdown catches and finished second with 25 receptions for 260 yards last season.

"I think the biggest thing with Thomas — at the end of the season I said to Thomas, I was like, 'What a great fall we had,' meaning him, us, we had. He's like, 'What do you mean?' What I love about Thomas Fidone, man, he is never happy. He is never happy. It's because he wants to be great. He wants to be the best tight end in the world. He's always trying to be better. My point was, coming off two ACLs, to get through a spring, a fall and a season healthy, that's what he needed. Because now instead of rehabbing this winter, he's lifting. He's in the 260 range at 4.5 with 34-inch arms. He's a physical freak. And he's loyal. ... So, I love that guy and I love his approach. It's so good for our players to see a guy who's so obsessed with being great and never happy. You know what I mean? But at the same time, to your point, he just had to have a true offseason. He just had to have weight lifting where he's not rehabbing and now I think you're starting to see what he can do."

Just sayin': If true, isn't that tampering?

SG Bowen Hardman (transfer to Akron)

FORMER OHIO STATE GUARD BOWEN HARDMAN COMMITS TO AKRON

A Cincinnati native and Princeton High School graduate, Hardman was a three-star recruit in Ohio State’s top-10 ranked 2022 class. He never carved out much of a role in his two years with the Buckeyes, appearing in 25 total games across both seasons. In 2023-24, Hardman averaged a career-best 4.2 minutes, 1.8 points and 0.4 rebounds per game in 18 appearances.

With two years of eligibility remaining, Hardman joins an Akron squad that went 24-11 overall, won the MAC Tournament and lost to No. 3-seeded Creighton in the NCAA Tournament. Like the Buckeyes, the Zips have rebuilt their roster through the portal this offseason, with Hardman one of five transfers to join the program in March and April.

12 New Helmets To Be Offered to NFL Players in 2024

APR 10, 2024
The league and its players' association have introduced a record amount of new helmet models for the 2024 campaign.

  • On Tuesday, the NFL and NFLPA introduced 12 new helmet models for the 2024 season, five of which outperformed every model ever worn in the league.
  • In recent years, engineers have developed position-specific helmets to offer better protection for players based on their role.
  • The NFL is constantly working to improve helmets to reduce ailments derailing players' lives after their playing career has ended.
The NFL's quest to provide its players with the best possible equipment continued on Tuesday, as the league and its players' association revealed a dozen new helmet models available for use during the 2024 campaign.

Five of the models, including the Riddell Axiom 3D (R61227) and Xenith Orbit Pro, tested better than "any helmet ever worn in the league."

Eight of the 12 helmets are position-specific, designed to, "mitigate impacts more likely to be sustained by individual positions." The first position-specific lids were created in 2021 for offensive and defensive linemen; quarterbacks received the next batch last year. Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President of Player Health and Safety, released a statement following the announcement.

We're proud to see so many new helmets continue the rapid rate of improvement we've seen over the past decade. What's more, the growing availability of position-specific helmets is a central part of our effort to provide players with the best possible protection for their position. Quarterbacks and linemen will have a range of tailored helmets available to them with more positions to come in the next couple of years.

NFL to allow Guardian Caps on helmets during regular season

i

The NFL has adjusted its rules to allow players the option of using Guardian Caps in regular-season games to enhance their protection against head injuries, the league confirmed Friday.

The padded head gear has been mandated for players at certain positions during training camp in 2022 and 2023. Speaking earlier this year, NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller said that Guardian Caps have contributed to a nearly 50% reduction in concussions for the positions groups that wore them during those time periods.

In a statement provided Friday to ESPN, Miller said: "We now have two years of data showing significant concussion reductions among players who wear Guardian Caps during practice, so players will be permitted to wear the cap during games this upcoming season. Additionally, there are new helmets this year that provide as much -- if not more -- protection than a different helmet model paired with a Guardian Cap. These developments represent substantial progress in our efforts to make the game safer for players."

The current plan is for the Guardian Caps to have team logos on them when worn during games.

The NFL will exempt players from having to use the Guardian Caps during the mandated portion of training camp if they wear one of six new helmet models that the league and the NFL Players Association have identified as providing equal or better protection.

Retinal Detachment Surgery

Finally had the cataract removed from the right eye (first detachment). I had the doc correct for distance, so now I can see perfectly and won't have to pay to have sunglasses changed to prescription lenses. I thought I'd freak a little bit knowing that I'd be half awake while this was going on, but it was smooth.

I had to push it back a couple of months after the left eye detached in February. That was a scary week. Left eye was blind because of the gas bubble, and the right eye was maybe 15% because of the blurriness and cloudiness of the cataract. I was ready to hire a 24 hour aid for a week (not cheap), but after the first day, I found that I could navigate the apartment, feed myself and take the dog for short walks. Since I got in so quick this time (detachment was Friday afternoon and surgery was Monday morning), damage was minimal and was given the lighter bubble that was half gone by the end of the week with clear vision over the top of what was left. Scheduled to get this cataract out in November. After which, this should all be over.

Naismith Hall of Fame - Basketball 2008 class

3rd time now and the only person in there 3 times I believe. Player, Coach and GM?

He's the logo of the NBA:

Its logo was designed in 1969 by Alan Siegel, the founder of the branding consultancy firm Siegel+Gale. The recognizable silhouette is modeled after Jerry West, a legendary Los Angeles Lakers player and Hall-of-Famer.

tOSU Transfer Portal Recruiting Discussion

Well what makes the SEC capable of having rules, but not the NCAA? Can't somebody just sue the SEC for whatever they sued the NCAA for and strip them of power as well?
I think the SEC programs agreed to the rules, and voted on the Commissioner to enforce them. At least thats what I’m led to believe. Those can feel free to correct me if I’m incorrect
