B1GTen Championship Ticketmaster presale til Friday

IMG_0824.PNG Ok. So I ened up paying $55/seat for the lower deck (and one mid level section). Face value $190.

Throw away $210 if they don't make it, but woth the risk relative to paying $500+ like I've done... and worth the risk relative to having over $2000 in State Penn tickets three days before the game... thanks to stubhub I only lost a little in that deal, but stress was high.

The market is still open / open again. Other reserve prices are lower than the $55. TOSU starts at $20.

It won’t be long before the Georgia native is suiting up for the Scarlet and Gray.

Ohio State has enjoyed a good run on the recruiting trail in recent years when it comes to bringing in elite quarterbacks.

That trend is set to continue with five-star, dual-threat quarterback Emory Jones.

When Jones signs with OSU in December or February, he’ll be the highest-rated signal-caller coach Urban Meyer has brought to Columbus. The Georgia native has 21 offers, including southern powerhouses Alabama and Florida.

Jones is still visiting schools, but remains intent on being a future Buckeye. He took some time to talk with us here at Land-Grant Holy Land about his Friday Night Lights experience, why he stands by OSU, and more.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: You were just at OSU’s annual Friday Night Lights in Columbus. What was that experience like for you?

Emory Jones: It was great to get back to Columbus and go to Friday Night Lights. The main thing I was going there to do was just to get coached up and to get in some of the meetings and interact with the quarterbacks. I learned some of the offense, so it was a start.

LGHL: You’ve also been invited to other events and camps. What does that say about you as a quarterback?

Jones: It’s a blessing just having those accolades to my name. Going out and doing big things at those camps and events, it’s big for me. I’m just blessed to be in this position to have the chance to go to things like that.

LGHL: It’s no secret that you’ve been one of the more highly sought after recruits this year. Have you enjoyed the whole recruiting process?

Jones: It’s been pretty good. Coming in, I committed early and I got a lot of offers early. Since I committed, it’s slowed down a little bit, but that’s only until you get deeper into the time when you’re trying to actually go to their school. It’s starting to pick back up now.

LGHL: With you still making visits to other schools, a lot of fans are pretty skeptical as to if you’ll actually remain committed to OSU. What do you say to those who question the strength of your commitment?

Jones: I’ve committed to OSU and it’d take a lot for me to decommit. It’s just a tough decision to make, coming from a teenager and telling your coaches and all that. That’s a tough decision to make, so I think it would take a lot for me to make a decision like that. I’m going to take some visits just to make sure OSU is the right school because I didn’t have that chance before I committed.

LGHL: Is it difficult for you to stay focused with so much going on with your recruitment?

Jones: It depends what your focus is and how mature you are. I’m a mature dude, so I try to focus on the things that I need to focus on, like school and all that, but I know I have to focus on recruiting. I split things up. So, I think I do a good job of doing that.

LGHL: It’s been almost a year since you injured your shoulder last October. How’s it feeling these days?

Jones: It healed up pretty good. I’ve been throwing really well. When I throw a lot of days back-to-back, it’ll start getting sore and start bugging me a bit, but as of right now, it’s fine.

LGHL: Is there anything you’ve been working on with your senior year and collegiate career coming up?

Jones: Mainly, I’ve been focusing on the mental part of the game, knowing all the defenses and all of the coverages, stuff like that. I’ve been going deeper into my playbook and just knowing where my receivers are. I want to be that type of quarterback that knows what my linemen are supposed to do. I’m just looking more into the mental part of the game so I can clear some things up.

LGHL: Do you have a favorite quarterback or someone you model your game after?

Jones: I don’t have a quarterback that I model my game after, but my favorite pro quarterback is Aaron Rodgers. I like the way he moves around in the pocket. He makes the most difficult throws. I feel like I’m the type of quarterback that can do things like that.

LGHL: Kyrie Irving reportedly asked to be traded away from the Cavs. Is that a good idea?

Jones: I’m a LeBron fan. I’m not even going to say that I’m a Cavs fan, I’m a LeBron fan. I don’t really think Kyrie should go anywhere, he should stay put. He takes more shots than LeBron, but he says he wants the ball in his hands more. I feel like when LeBron has the ball in his hands, he scores and does good things, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

The Beginning of the End of Football?

Noteworthy that the National Institute of Health and NFL will not continue their research relationship for CTE after the end of next week.

  • NIH says that NFL refused to fund research by someone that NFL viewed as hostile, and that NFL tried to influence the outcome of the research favorably.
  • Apparently, NFL only paid $12 million of the total of $30 million that they pledged to NIH five years ago.

I love this game but, if it really is causing this damage to players, then maybe the way forward is to limit players to a number of years in the pros (maybe 3). In three years time, most players would be able to put away enough money to get a good start in life. As an example, if Zeke takes his $20 million for the first three years and invests it wisely, his options in life would be excellent.

We've seen enough to know that people are really damaged. Aaron Hernandez is an example of what happens. I don't like controls, but there needs to be limits and helmet modifications really haven't done much to sort this out.

The quarterback reportedly cried tears of joy after he found out he was leaving Siberia Buffalo.

“When the Bills brought Jones in to tell him he had been traded, the quarterback cried -- tears of joy, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.”

Cardale Jones and his emotions after learning of his trade from Buffalo to Los Angeles, according to Schefter | Ryan Wilson, CBSSports.com

On Wednesday, news broke that former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones was on the move via trade. Trades, which in this instance sent the national championship winning quarterback from the Buffalo Bills to the Los Angeles Chargers, can be hard on players; some establish roots in a city, only to be transplanted somewhere else on a moment’s notice.

The trade didn’t seem to be too hard for Jones. In fact, there may have not been a better city for him to go to. In a story written by CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson, Wilson pointed to a tweet from the Mike & Mike Twitter account, which had a good scoop from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

"When the Bills brought Cardale Jones in to tell him he was traded to the Chargers, he began crying. He began crying tears of joy"

Schefter pic.twitter.com/1y3uthBZRr

— Mike & Mike (@MikeAndMike) July 27, 2017

In Buffalo, Jones was in fierce competition just to stay in the QB #2 or QB #3 spot on the depth chart. Last season, the rookie only had 11 pass attempts—but managed to crank out a 64-yard pass completion in his one game of action. Now in Los Angeles, Jones has a real shot to compete for the backup role behind starting QB Philip Rivers.

Jones won’t feel too alone in L.A., as former Buckeyes Joey Bosa and Joshua Perry are on the team. Wouldn’t it be something if the Chargers kept on stockpiling members of the 2015 national championship, and ended up winning a Super Bowl?

Guess only time will tell.

“Last year, we didn’t finish. I feel like we need to stick to finishing. Do it every game, we can accomplish all our goals.”

Ohio State defensive end Jalyn Holmes on his motto for the season: finish | Jeremy Birmingham (Landof10)

When Cardale led the Buckeyes to the title, the motto that season was “The Chase.” While the Buckeyes don’t have an official motto this season, or at least one that’s been announced to the masses, the mindset is about the “finish.”

Landof10’s Jeremy Birmingham caught up with defensive end Jalyn Holmes, and he reported that Holmes’ mantra going into the season was about finishing, and reaching goals.

The personal goal of Holmes might very well end up being something that pushes the team, as the “finish” mindset reflects what the Buckeyes’ struggled with at the end of last season: finishing games. The final three games of last season featured either nail-biting wins or a blowout.

Earlier in the week at Big Ten media days, head coach Urban Meyer said that the team has moved on from the loss to Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal. While that may be true, the shortcoming of not winning a national championship can definitely be used for motivation.

If “Finish” is the mantra this season for the Scarlet and Gray, it makes complete sense.

Ryan Shazier, a Spurs fan?

“But on the first day of the NFL season, Shazier chose to make a fairly loud statement about his favorite NBA team.”

Sam Quinn 247Sports

As training camp is starting back up, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier made his way in style. First, Shazier came to practice in a blue Porsche; after he got out of the car, he unveiled the fact that he was wearing a David Robinson jersey. Jacob Klinger of Penn Live got the arrival of Shazier on video, and posted a link to Twitter.

Steelers LB Ryan Shazier says the San Antonio Spurs need to sign Kyrie Irving https://t.co/eohIQ7bpJy

— Jacob Klinger (@Jacob_Klinger_) July 27, 2017

But, Shazier wasn’t done just yet with the topic of the Spurs. 247sports’ Sam Quinn wrote a piece about the Shazier-Spurs arrival and noted that another reporter, Chris Adamski, a writer for the Tribune-Review, asked Shazier about his feelings of getting the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving on the squad.

Here was Shazier’s response:

Ryan Shazier shows up in a sweet David Robinson throwback
Says he's a "big" Spurs fan. Asked about Kyrie Irving, Shazier said,"We need him!"

— Chris Adamski (@C_AdamskiTrib) July 27, 2017

We’ll see if Irving actually make the move from the Cavs to the Spurs.

10 most important Ohio State Buckeyes in 2017: No. 4 Denzel Ward

usa_today_9713683.0.jpg

We’re counting down the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities, and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 4: Denzel Ward

Position: Cornerback

2016 stats: 23 total tackles, 9 pass breakups

Ohio State graduated both starting cornerbacks from last season, and not one, but both of them were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Losing two-year starter Gareon Conley and No. 11 overall pick Marshon Lattimore will most certainly hurt the Buckeye secondary, but luckily, they have a player in Denzel Ward who has played in 25 straight games to instantly fill one of the openings and ease the transition to a bunch of inexperienced, yet talented, underclassmen.

“I’m telling you [Ward is] as good as the other two,” Coach Kerry Coombs said during spring practice. “He doesn’t have to say it. I’m telling you that. I think he believes it, he just doesn’t have to say it.”

What people might not know about Ward though, is that he was actually on the field almost just as much as Conley and Lattimore — playing in 468 snaps in 2016. With Coombs typically using Conley and Lattimore to shadow the opponent’s top two receivers, Ward was utilized to man-up on the team’s third wideout. Per CFB Film Room, Ward was targeted the second most on the team (42) behind Conley (43) and only allowed 15 receptions on the season. They had him charted for nine first downs allowed and he let up zero touchdowns on the season. Not too bad for your third corner.

Kerry Coombs said Denzel Ward was clocked at 21.8 mph in games in '15, which was the fastest on the team. Jeffrey Okudah hit 23.2 this week.

— Tony Gerdeman (@TonyGerdeman) March 9, 2017

Not only did the Buckeyes lose their two starting corners, but they also lost the best playmaking free safety in the country, Malik Hooker. Hooker was able to mask any coverage deficiencies downfield, and possessed elite range that made it borderline impossible to throw the deep ball on the Ohio State secondary. With sophomore Jordan Fuller likely to take Hooker’s spot, it only makes sense that the defense could be a step slower this season. The departure of an elite free safety makes Ward’s job even more important and difficult. He’ll be most likely asked to shadow the team’s No. 1 receiver, while playing across from a first-year starter at corner and in front of a first-year starter at free safety.

Coach Coombs is very excited for the potential of the 5’10, 190-pound junior cornerback. “He’s a very gifted player,” Coombs said. “He’s had a great offseason and he’s demonstrated some terrific leadership. I’m very excited about him.”

Ward’s leadership and talent will be key to an extremely young positional group, and he could be Coach Coomb’s fifth(!) first rounder in as many years.

We talk with The Vest about historic changes to the recruiting landscape.

Remember when college football recruiting was simple?

Neither do I.

It’s grown into a full-fledged 24/7, 365-day operation. While social media and blog sites like this one contributed to that growth, nothing has changed recruiting more than the Internet, specifically in the past 15 years or so.

But you know who remembers when it was a slow, uninteresting process to follow?

Jim Tressel.

The current president of Youngstown State and legendary former Ohio State head coach, Tressel knows a thing or two about recruiting and the facelift its undergone in recent years.

“It’s turned into a scoreboard of its own,” Tressel told Land-Grant Holy Land. “When I began coaching, the focus was on coaching your kids and then after the season was over, you’d go and find out who had a good senior year. You’d see if you could borrow the film and hold it for two days, and you’d go show your staff. That was 40-some years ago.”

Now, 40 years might not sound like a long time, but it was in those same years that recruiting — and all that went into it — experienced a major evolution.

I mean, what comes to mind when you think of modern-day recruiting? Rankings, sports blogs, etc., all things that haven't been around for much of college football’s lifespan.

“You didn’t have to borrow film, there started to be recruiting services, they started making rankings and all that,” Tressel said. “Now it’s a season of its own. People are evaluated by the rank of their recruiting class and players are making visits to campus way earlier in their lives than they used to. It’s very different, but it’s not unlike the rest of the world.”

The world is obviously a different place than when Tressel began coaching in 1975 as a graduate assistant with Akron, so the changes to recruiting are par for the course.

Like I said before, nothing has contributed to that change more than the Internet, but as Tressel points out, the deregulation of television can’t be ignored.

“When I started coaching, you could only be on TV five times every two years. That was the rule,” Tressel said. “When TV was deregulated, all of the sudden, people from all over the country saw you, saw your stadium, saw your team.”

Few coaches were better at getting the everyday fan to watch OSU than The Vest. He went 106–22 94–22 with the Buckeyes and led the team to three national championship appearances, winning one.

Most importantly, Tressel consistently brought in top-notch recruiting classes. Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Nick Mangold, Malcolm Jenkins, and James Laurinaitis speak for themselves. And that's just the tip of the iceberg Tressel signed over the years.

His final class in 2011 alone features Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, Ryan Shazier and others who went on to be stars, not to mention building blocks of the Urban Meyer era.

The recruiting successes he enjoyed with OSU had more to do with the actual school itself than anything else, according to Tressel.

“The thing we had was a special school,” Tressel said. “We had The Horseshoe, the great tradition and we had great recruiting areas. I remember when I was an assistant coach at Syracuse and I used to think, ‘Man, if I was ever coaching at a place like OSU, I'd never lose a recruit.’ You don’t get them all, but we certainly got our share.”

Tressel and his staff more than got their share. They cleaned up around the Midwest, established a pipeline in Florida and continued to pluck players nationwide.

“I had a lot of respect for all of the guys we recruited against. The head coach gets a lot of the credit for recruiting, but it’s really the collection of your staff and how they work together.”

The system in place at OSU worked as well as any in the country, but it could’ve faltered if not for the lessons Tressel learned early on in his coaching career.

“It’s funny, when I was a graduate assistant at Akron, they sent me out to an area and gave me a list of schools,” Tressel said. “They told me to bring back film and an academic transcript, and we’ll compare it against the other guys we’re recruiting. That’s the start I got. Sometimes you have to get thrown out into the water and see if you can survive.”

Having been removed from OSU for six years, it’s clear Tressel made his mark on the football program in more ways than one.

For all he accomplished on the field, it was Tressel’s ability to adapt to the ever-changing recruiting landscape and routinely sign elite classes that kept the Buckeyes on top.

“I had a lot of respect for all of the guys we recruited against,” Tressel said. “The head coach gets a lot of the credit for recruiting, but it’s really the collection of your staff and how they work together.”
