We talk with The Vest about historic changes to the recruiting landscape.

Remember when college football recruiting was simple?

Neither do I.

It’s grown into a full-fledged 24/7, 365-day operation. While social media and blog sites like this one contributed to that growth, nothing has changed recruiting more than the Internet, specifically in the past 15 years or so.

But you know who remembers when it was a slow, uninteresting process to follow?

Jim Tressel.

The current president of Youngstown State and legendary former Ohio State head coach, Tressel knows a thing or two about recruiting and the facelift its undergone in recent years.

“It’s turned into a scoreboard of its own,” Tressel told Land-Grant Holy Land. “When I began coaching, the focus was on coaching your kids and then after the season was over, you’d go and find out who had a good senior year. You’d see if you could borrow the film and hold it for two days, and you’d go show your staff. That was 40-some years ago.”

Now, 40 years might not sound like a long time, but it was in those same years that recruiting — and all that went into it — experienced a major evolution.

I mean, what comes to mind when you think of modern-day recruiting? Rankings, sports blogs, etc., all things that haven't been around for much of college football’s lifespan.

“You didn’t have to borrow film, there started to be recruiting services, they started making rankings and all that,” Tressel said. “Now it’s a season of its own. People are evaluated by the rank of their recruiting class and players are making visits to campus way earlier in their lives than they used to. It’s very different, but it’s not unlike the rest of the world.”

The world is obviously a different place than when Tressel began coaching in 1975 as a graduate assistant with Akron, so the changes to recruiting are par for the course.

Like I said before, nothing has contributed to that change more than the Internet, but as Tressel points out, the deregulation of television can’t be ignored.

“When I started coaching, you could only be on TV five times every two years. That was the rule,” Tressel said. “When TV was deregulated, all of the sudden, people from all over the country saw you, saw your stadium, saw your team.”

Few coaches were better at getting the everyday fan to watch OSU than The Vest. He went 106–22 94–22 with the Buckeyes and led the team to three national championship appearances, winning one.

Most importantly, Tressel consistently brought in top-notch recruiting classes. Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Nick Mangold, Malcolm Jenkins, and James Laurinaitis speak for themselves. And that's just the tip of the iceberg Tressel signed over the years.

His final class in 2011 alone features Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, Ryan Shazier and others who went on to be stars, not to mention building blocks of the Urban Meyer era.

The recruiting successes he enjoyed with OSU had more to do with the actual school itself than anything else, according to Tressel.

“The thing we had was a special school,” Tressel said. “We had The Horseshoe, the great tradition and we had great recruiting areas. I remember when I was an assistant coach at Syracuse and I used to think, ‘Man, if I was ever coaching at a place like OSU, I'd never lose a recruit.’ You don’t get them all, but we certainly got our share.”

Tressel and his staff more than got their share. They cleaned up around the Midwest, established a pipeline in Florida and continued to pluck players nationwide.

“I had a lot of respect for all of the guys we recruited against. The head coach gets a lot of the credit for recruiting, but it’s really the collection of your staff and how they work together.”

The system in place at OSU worked as well as any in the country, but it could’ve faltered if not for the lessons Tressel learned early on in his coaching career.

“It’s funny, when I was a graduate assistant at Akron, they sent me out to an area and gave me a list of schools,” Tressel said. “They told me to bring back film and an academic transcript, and we’ll compare it against the other guys we’re recruiting. That’s the start I got. Sometimes you have to get thrown out into the water and see if you can survive.”

Having been removed from OSU for six years, it’s clear Tressel made his mark on the football program in more ways than one.

For all he accomplished on the field, it was Tressel’s ability to adapt to the ever-changing recruiting landscape and routinely sign elite classes that kept the Buckeyes on top.

“I had a lot of respect for all of the guys we recruited against,” Tressel said. “The head coach gets a lot of the credit for recruiting, but it’s really the collection of your staff and how they work together.”

Jaiden Woodbey and Josh Proctor aren't going anywhere.

Yesterday marked the opening day of fall camp for the Buckeyes' football squad. With a new offensive coordinator at the helm looking to create a resurgence of tempo and excitement, the expectations for 2017 seem to be as high if not higher than usual. It was another typical week for Ohio State as they continue to lead the pack in recruiting efforts. Another top prospect even committed to Ohio State yesterday, as Marcus Hooker, brother of former Buckeye Malik Hooker, gave the Buckeyes his pledge. As the season approaches, recruiting is sure to take a much-deserved step back, but with this coaching staff, that may not seem to be the case.

Locked in for good

On Wednesday, 4-star safety and 2018 Ohio State commit Jaiden Woodbey officially shut down his recruitment by reaffirming his pledge to Ohio State. Yesterday, future teammate and fellow safety Josh Proctor, another 2018 Buckeye commit, followed suit by also shutting down his recruitment and claiming that Ohio State is definitely the future home for him.

I am officially shutting down my recruitment‼️ I want to thank all the programs who have recruited me in this process.. #Shhh18 pic.twitter.com/qYbdrQaGpA

— Josh™ (@Jproctor_2018) July 27, 2017

As well as Ohio State has recruited in the defensive backfield, it’s always a serious win for the coaching staff to see two of the top prospects at the safety position in the entire country rid themselves of any other school trying to pluck their talents. Proctor, the ninth-best safety in the country and the third-best prospect in the state of Oklahoma, will be another stud to add to the fold for Greg Schiano and Kerry Coombs when he hits campus. Having him dead-set on spending his future in Columbus surely shows the recruiting efforts paying off.

Bucks make the cut yet again

It’s been said almost too many times to count, but daily it seems that when a top prospect releases a list of final schools he is considering before making the final call, the Buckeyes are almost guaranteed to make the list. Urban Meyer and his recruiting staff have had no shortage of success, and that’s evident with their top 2018 class. Yesterday, this formula for success with the recruiting staff looked to pay off again as William Barnes (Apopka, FL/Apopka) took to twitter to announce his final seven schools.

TOP 7‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ pic.twitter.com/ffdPdoEFdP

— (@barneswilliam7) July 28, 2017

A current 4-star, Barnes is ranked as the fifth-best offensive tackle in the country as well as the seventh-best prospect of any position in the talent-rich state of Florida. At 6'4 and 312 pounds, it’s easy to see why Barnes has the list of offers he does. But he's now trimmed it to seven, with Florida, Florida State, North Carolina, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and Ohio State making the cut. It remains to be seen if Ohio State is a real threat here considering the Florida Gators are thought to be the clear favorite, but with Meyer’s recruiting track record in the Sunshine State, it’s pretty clear that anything is possible.

Coming soon

Just about an hour west of Columbus in Huber Heights, Ohio lives not only one of Ohio’s best, but on a larger scale, one of the nation’s best athletes in Wayne Warrior phenom L’Christian “Blue” Smith. A household name that is currently in the Ohio State headlines nearly every day, Smith took to Twitter yesterday to remind everyone tuned in that he will be committing on live television on August 27, just a month from yesterday as his prep Warriors will be playing on national television.

1 month till the decision....

— BLUE (@bluesmith_) July 27, 2017

The assumption and more so of a reality is that Ohio State and Kentucky are the two battling for his services head to head. While Ohio State has the edge in nearly if not all the aspects between the two schools, Kentucky has done a stellar job at making Blue a priority and showing why he could be the start of something Kentucky desperately needs.

The number three athlete in the country and the fourth-best prospect in the Buckeye State may have both fan bases believing they have the edge, but if Urban Meyer has anything to say about it, Blue will be more of a Scarlet when all is said and done as they look to keep one of Ohio’s best at home playing in The Horseshoe for his collegiate career.

It might be a while before we see the former Ohio State guard back in Columbus.

“I don’t think I’ll ever go back now. It just — it messed me up completely. And I talked to him so many times just prior to that. He’s not upset or anything so I guess they didn’t really treat him bad, but it just hurt me to se a guy like him go.”

Former Ohio State guard D’Angelo Russell on The Woj Podcast via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Time may heal all wounds, but right now D’Angelo Russell is not happy with Ohio State’s decision to fire Thad Matta in early June. The offseason has already been tumultuous for Russell, who, after two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, was traded to the Brooklyn Nets last month. The news is not something that new head coach Chris Holtmann can be happy to hear as he has the task of turning around an Ohio State basketball program that has missed the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons.

While it’s hard to imagine that the absence of Russell around the program would have any sort of major impact on what Holtmann is trying to do in Columbus, especially with Russell only spending a year with the Buckeyes, the presence of the talented guard certainly wouldn’t hurt. It’s possible that Holtmann and Russell haven’t had a chance to speak yet, and Russell’s tune might change once he sees what Holtmann is trying to accomplish with the Buckeyes.

Still, it’s not a good look for the program when one of their recent stars comes out and takes such a strong stance in how their coaching change was handled. Holtmann made it clear at his introductory press conference that he was intent on welcoming former players of all generations into the program. Looks like he’s got some work to do on at least one former Buckeye.

“Last year, Ohio State was tasked with replacing 12 players — including five first-rounders — who were selected in the 2016 NFL draft. Though the Buckeyes won’t have to deal with the large quantity of losses this year, they will once again be forced to identify new starters at seven different positions.”

Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

With great success comes great responsibility, and for Ohio State the responsibility is trying to identify seven new starters this year. In April, Ohio State lost three defensive backs, Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, and Gareon Conley, in the first round of the draft. Curtis Samuel, Raekwon McMillan, Pat Elflein, and Noah Brown followed over the next two days. While Urban Meyer and his staff don’t have as big of a job in replacing key players as they did following the 2015 season, they still have to make the right moves to keep Ohio State in the thick of the national title race.

Two of the positions which Ohio State needs to fill are pretty easy to identify the replacements for. McMillan’s linebacker position will likely see Chris Worley move from strongside outside linebacker to middle linebacker, with Dante Booker entering the starting lineup to take over Worley’s position. At center, it is already known that Billy Price will move to center to give Ohio State the veteran leadership that Elflein gave the offensive line last year.

The other five positions that Ohio State must fill aren’t quite as clear, with a number of players in the mix to become the starters. With three spots open in the defensive backfield, there are five cornerbacks who will try and replace Lattimore and Conley. Denzel Ward is a favorite to grab one of those open slots with the play he exhibited on the field last year. The other position is a toss-up between Damon Arnette, Kendall Sheffield, Shaun Wade, and Jeffrey Okudah. At safety, Erick Smith and Jordan Fuller will compete to try and fill Malik Hooker’s vacated safety spot.

The picture at a couple positions on the offensive side of the football is just as cloudy. Samuel was Ohio State’s best offensive threat last year, and now Demario McCall, Parris Campbell, and K.J. Hill are all likely to see some time at the position, with Campbell and McCall probably seeing the lion’s share of the opportunities. Hill is also in the mix to replace Noah Brown at wide receiver, along with a laundry list of candidates who are itching to try and bolster Ohio State’s passing attack.

“You don’t want to rush, but you want to go fast. It’s learning how to play within yourself at a reasonable tempo.”

Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

A return to faster tempo sounds like it is in the works for Ohio State’s offense under Kevin Wilson. Tom Herman was able to find success as an offensive coordinator with the up-tempo offense that he employed in his short tenure in Columbus. In the two years since Herman’s departure to take the head coaching position at Houston, Ohio State hasn’t consistently utilized the type of tempo that was successful under the former OC. Last year the problems with the offense ran deeper than just their pace when on the field, and even with those issues, Ohio State found themselves in the College Football Playoff.

Now Buckeye fans are salivating at what new offensive coordinator Wilson will bring to the table in terms of tempo. Ohio State won’t rival what Chip Kelly did in terms of tempo during his time at Oregon, but what Buckeye fans will see is an improvement from what they saw last year.

Wilson plans to employ an up-tempo offense that will get opposing defenses on their heels, and test their endurance. It will be interesting to see if Wilson’s style of play will be the difference and allow Ohio State to achieve the same type of success they found with Herman running the show.

LGHL What does Marcus Hooker bring to Ohio State

Ohio State has a new legacy family.

A little over four years ago, Ohio State extended an offer to an under the radar, three-star defensive back named Malik Hooker on the recommendation of then defensive coordinator Luke Fickell. He was extremely raw, but an athletic freak, with enormous upside. Thanks to some excellent coaching by Fickell, Greg Schiano, and Kerry Coombs, Malik was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2016 draft, despite spending just one year as a starter in Columbus.

Ohio State is hoping they can strike gold again, as just moments ago, Malik’s younger brother, Marcus, committed to Ohio State, less than 24 hours after being offered. Marcus, much like his brother, is a very athletic, but very raw, defensive back, that received an offer from Ohio State due to a defensive coordinator's infatuation with his athleticism and ceiling.

For much of the 2018 recruiting cycle, Marcus seemed headed to Pittsburgh, or West Virginia, as he had interest from his brother’s former school, but no offer. Marcus was given a list of goals Ohio State wanted him to achieve to receive an offer, and after a number of excellent camp performances, Marcus did just that. He looked fantastic at Friday Night Lights last week, and less than seven days later, he’s now officially a member of Ohio State’s 2018 class.

Marcus shares some similarities with his brother, but overall, he’s a fairly different player. Here’s what he brings to Ohio State, both on the field and in their 2018 class.

ON THE FIELD

Marcus is built a bit differently than his brother is. He’s two or three inches shorter, and not as freakish of an athlete as Malik is, although not many people are. Despite a bit of an athletic gap, Marcus is still an extremely long, athletic defensive back that catches the ball very well, just like most Greg Schiano defensive backs. He’s listed as a cornerback right now, but will shift to safety at the next level, as his skill-set dictates.

He may not be the Olympic level athlete that his brother is, but at least according to his high school coach, Marcus may be a better player than Malik was, at least coming out of high school. His game is a bit more refined than Malik’s was, in terms of his coverage skills, tackling ability, and overall technique. He doesn’t have the center fielder-like speed of his brother, but he more than makes up for it with great anticipation skills, and long strides that allow him to cover a large amount of space.

However, that doesn’t mean that he won’t have a lot to learn once he arrives in Columbus. Most of Marcus’ high school success has come on the offensive side of the ball at wide receiver, due to his athleticism. The foundation is there, but as I said, he’ll need to spend a year or two developing his game, especially when it comes to tackling and the nuances of the safety position in Ohio State’s defense.

Ohio State wouldn’t have offered him if they didn’t think that he had the ability to play at the Big Ten level, and both Greg Schiano and Kerry Coombs are confident that they can mold Marcus into the second Hooker brother to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

IN THE CLASS

Marcus is the 16th commitment in Ohio State’s 2018 class, and the third safety, along with Jaiden Woodbey and Josh Proctor. Where Woodbey and Proctor are more refined, Marcus serves as a bit of a project. He won’t compete for a starting job right away, and doesn’t have as much experience or technical skill, though he makes up for it with his range, hands, and potential.

Before you ask, no, his commitment doesn’t impact anyone else’s in the class, or that Ohio State is currently looking at. It’s been extremely common for Urban Meyer to take at least one project player in every class, and Marcus may be that player in this class. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn’t, but I can tell you right now that no one is losing a spot over this commitment.

Marcus is Ohio State’s first commitment from Pennsylvania, after three straight classes of bringing in no recruits from Ohio’s neighbor to the east. He may not be the last recruit to head to Columbus from Pennsylvania in this class either, as the Buckeyes remain in hot pursuit of one of the nation’s best players, defensive end Micah Parsons. Landing Marcus doesn’t really help Ohio State in recruiting Parsons, but it certainly doesn’t hurt either.

If you’re the kind of person that cares about recruit rankings and composite scores, don’t fret when you see Marcus sitting in the mid 500s, because after an excellent summer and what could be a big senior campaign, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he got a big push, perhaps even past the 352 ranking his brother was given in 2014.

Fun note: Marcus, Ohio State’s lowest ranked commit, would easily be the best player in Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa’s 2018 classes. If you’re wondering why Ohio State has been dominating the Big 10 recently, look no further than that stat.
