How do the teams’ coaching changes impact the Week 2 matchup?

“Things seem to set up much better for Oklahoma this year than they did last year. That doesn't mean Ohio State is destined to lose, but it does mean that -- despite this came (sic) being in Columbus -- beating Oklahoma could prove a little more difficult than it did last year.”

- Bill Landis, cleveland.com

There is no doubt that Ohio State’s Week 2 matchup against Oklahoma will be the biggest (if not only) test of the first half of the season. The Sooners return fifth-year senior Baker Mayfield, as well as many key starters from last year’s squad that arguably was playing the best football post-Week 2.

However, to me what is most interesting about this game is how the coaching changes on both sides will impact the play on the field. Following the shocking “retirement” of Bob Stoops last month, Lincoln Riley is now calling the shots for OU. The 33-year-old is in his first year as a head coach, following stops at Texas Tech and East Carolina as an assistant, before becoming Stoops’ offensive coordinator in 2015.

The trip to Columbus will mark Riley’s first major test in the new position, and one has to wonder if the environment of a major, nationally televised night game at the home of a highly-ranked prestige program will impact the young coach’s performance. Fortunately for OU, he will be buoyed by a veteran QB and a well-seasoned defensive coordinator in Mike Stoops.

On the other side, how will the changes in OSU’s offensive staff change how the game is played. I am not ashamed to admit that last year’s 45-24 Buckeye victory shocked me, especially in retrospect, considering the offensive deficiencies that plagued the team the rest of the year.

So, how will the additions of Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day change what we see from J.T. Barrett, Mike Weber, et. al? Unlike the Sooners, who open up against UTEP, the Buckeyes’ first game is against conference foe Indiana, where Wilson was the head coach until he was unceremoniously relieved of his duties last December.

Therefore, Week 1 will probably provide more insight about what to expect from the Buckeyes than from OU, but facing stiffer competition (not to mention doing say two days earlier), should give Ohio State a bit of an advantage when the Sooners come to town.

“Sam Hubbard has all the natural talent you could ask for. With size, strength, and athleticism being strengths for him, he is set up very well for an illustrious NFL career. With really only needing to add pass rush moves to his arsenal, Hubbard should be a dominant player once again for the Scarlet and Gray. ”

- Dynasty Football Factory

Despite already being recognized as a Freshman All-American and All-Big Ten team honorable mention, Sam Hubbard has been a bit under the radar in his first three years in Columbus. After red-shirting in 2014, he has often been overshadowed by fellow linemen including Joey Bosa, Adolphus Washington, Tyquan Lewis, and more. However, he has been an important part of the defense since 2015, and will be even more valuable this fall.

As the article says, Hubbard is an incredibly gifted athlete with the speed and strength necessary to be a dominate bookend to Jalyn Holmes on the other end. Coming into his third year on the field, and second as a starter, if he is able to continue to develop his skills as a pass rusher, not only will that benefit the Buckeyes this season, but should also help him when he eventually transitions to the NFL.

“Ohio Staters, Inc. is creating a sculpture to commemorate The Ohio State Marching Band and their signature ‘Script Ohio...’ This granite sculpture will be 12 feet wide and 8 feet tall, weighing a total of 20,000 pounds!”

- Ohio Staters, Inc.

I’m going to get a little sentimental here; without fail, whenever I see the Ohio State Marching Band perform, whether it is in The ‘Shoe, on TV, or when I have fallen down a YouTube rabbit hole, I get emotional, and am often beset by goosebumps and tears.

We all know how special of a place Ohio State is, and there is no better embodiment of that than the unrivaled precision and artistry of the best damn band in the land. So, whether you contribute $20 or the $27,900 that the Ohio Staters still need, I think it is an incredibly worthwhile investment to help get a gigantic “Script Ohio” erected on campus to honor just how important TBDBITL is to the Buckeye community.

The Buckeyes will take on Gonzaga, Clemson, North Carolina, and more.

Ohio State just announced the complete 2017-2018 men’s basketball, non-conference schedule. Highlighting the slate are games against Gonzaga, Clemson, and North Carolina.

The game against the Zags will be a part of the PK80 Invitational on November 23rd, and, depending on the result of that one, the Buckeyes will play either Florida or Stanford in Round 2. OSU will then host Clemson in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on November 29th.

The other high-profile tilt of the non-conference season is against the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. The squads will meet in the fourth annual CBSSports Classic in New Orleans, two days before Christmas.

In addition, the Buckeyes will play host to Robert Morris, Radford, Texas Southern, Northeastern, William and Mary, Appalachian State, The Citadel, and Miami (Ohio).

Musa_Jallow.0.jpg

The Buckeyes added a much-needed wing to their roster.

In the midst of a complete overhaul of the basketball program, Ohio State scored their third 2017 commitment last week, four-star shooting guard Musa Jallow. A Bloomington, Indiana native, Jallow passed on his hometown Indiana Hoosiers, among others, for the rebuilding Buckeyes.

Up until his commitment, the 6-foot-5, 200-pound wing was listed as a 2018 recruit, but reclassified and will be able to play this season for the Scarlet and Gray. Jallow took a break from preparation and spoke with us about his relationship with the Buckeyes new coaching staff, why OSU was the best fit for him, and if the team is primed to defy expectations.

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: You’re a Bloomington native and received offers from Butler, Virginia, and many others, including your hometown Indiana Hoosiers. What stood out to you about OSU?

Musa Jallow: Under the new coaching staff at Indiana, I didn’t have an offer. I picked OSU because of where they’re headed now. They have Coach Holtmann and when he called, he was pretty fired up about what they’re going to do these next couple of years. I love his energy towards the situation and his mindset for it. I feel like I fit his mold and can help him do what he wants to do.

LGHL: Not many fans are very familiar with the new basketball coaching staff, especially Coach Holtmann. What’s your relationship with him like?

Jallow: We had a pretty good relationship when he was at Butler. His main focus is just playing hard and being the aggressors on defense, pushing the tempo, high motor play, things like that. That’s what I want to do at the next level, so I thought I’d fit perfectly in that system.

LGHL: Did it bother you that the new coaching staff at Indiana didn’t offer you?

Jallow: To me, Indiana was just another high-level school that was recruiting me, so I didn’t let it bother me too much. It just showed me that I need to keep working harder. At the end of the day, it didn’t work out and I found the best fit for me. I’m happy with my choice.

LGHL: Most people found out you reclassified for the 2017 recruiting class when you committed to OSU last week. Why did you decide to reclassify?

Jallow: Since my freshman year of high school, I’ve been taking a good class load and was prepared to have that availability. I just wanted to make my high school years as efficient as possible. So, when this situation opened up, I was ready for it and took it.

LGHL: Did you enjoy being recruited? I’m sure there was a good amount of pressure on your shoulders considering you’re from Bloomington.

Jallow: Yeah, it was cool. It’s pretty awesome to go around and see a lot of campuses and feel wanted by a lot of people. There were some days where it’d get a little annoying. I told my coach that I was sick of the phone calls and he told me that it was a good problem to have because some kids are just dying to get one phone call or a letter. That made me grateful for the situation I’m in and I’m just really happy that I got this opportunity.

LGHL: You’re known as a do-everything type of player, but will you bring to the table as a Buckeye?

Jallow: I can do anything. I’m a very coachable player and whatever Coach Holtmann wants me to do, I can do it. I can bring the ball up, I can shoot, I can play off the ball, I can even go in the post if I have a mismatch. I can grab a rebound and push it coast to coast and make plays for my teammates. I’m just a team player and will do whatever the team needs to win.

LGHL: Making the jump to college basketball isn’t easy by any means. Is there anything in particular that you’re working on this summer to prepare yourself?

Jallow: I just have to be able to play at a high level the whole game. In high school, it’s just a different pace and it’s not as demanding as the college level is. I’m looking forward it, just being able to play at a high level against good competition. I’m confident in myself.

LGHL: You’ve gotten to know the team pretty well and will be joining them in about a month. What are your expectations for the upcoming season?

Jallow: We want to turn heads, win as many games as possible and do what people think we can’t. I won’t be there until August 15, but I know a lot of the guys on the team and they’re looking forward to having a great season this year, especially the seniors.

LGHL: Favorite basketball player growing up and why.

Jallow: I’d probably say LeBron. He does everything for his team and he makes his team better. He brings his whole team to another level and I feel like I can bring that to the next level.

LGHL: You’re a Cavaliers fan, so you couldn’t have been too happy when they lost to the Warriors in the NBA Finals. What do the Cavs have to do win a championship in 2018?

Jallow: Not get Carmelo Anthony. The Warriors are just young and fast and play as a team, and that’s what the Cavs need. It takes time to get the right combination for a team.

LGHL: Before you head off to college, do you have a favorite moment from your high school basketball career?

Jallow: There were some good moments. One that comes to mind was just last year in our last regular season game. Away, in front of a sold out crowd, I was at the free throw line and the entire crowd was just booing me. I knocked down both free throws and they still kept booing me. It was a great feeling, I like playing in situations like that.

The Buckeye stars could take home some hardware tonight.

Tonight’s ESPY Awards will showcase a pair of athletes who went from niche names in the Ohio State sports world to big names in the real world.

Zeke could topple NFL royalty

Ezekiel Elliott, on whose back the Buckeyes once rode to a national title, has been nominated in the “Best NFL Player” category, where he’ll face steep competition. The award’s other nominees include both quarterbacks from this year’s Super Bowl (that’s Tom Brady and Matt Ryan, in case you somehow missed it), Oakland Raiders LB Khalil Mack, and perennial playoff hero Aaron Rodgers. That Zeke was nominated in this prestigious category after just one season of pro ball will likely have to be prize enough: odds are long for him to knock off Brady, the reigning Super Bowl MVP; or Rodgers, the league’s human highlight reel.

In his rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys, Elliott racked up 1,631 yards on 322 carries, finding the end zone 15 times. Those numbers were good enough to make him the league leader in rushing yards and place third in rushing TDs.

Snyder looks for another gold

The best college wrestler in America showed that he was also the best wrestler in his weight class in the world last summer. Kyle Snyder, whose exploits on the mat have been spoiling Buckeye fans for years, became the youngest American to win Olympic wrestling gold during the Rio games in 2016. He’s nominated in the “Best U.S. Olympic Athlete (Male)” category.

Snyder pulled off the near-impossible last year, winning the World championship, the NCAA championship, and the Olympic gold in a span of just a few months. The opponents he beat in the Olympic and World title matches had a combined 20 years more experience than Snyder, to put the feat in context.

Like Elliott, Snyder is a long shot to win the ESPY tonight. His competition includes Michael Phelps and Ashton Eaton, one a household name and the other fast becoming one. It’s not as though Phelps and Eaton were nominated on name value alone, though. Phelps was the most decorated athlete of the Rio games, his fourth consecutive Olympics doing so. He won eight gold medals and a silver medal for the U.S. swim team. Eaton, meanwhile, is coming off back-to-back golds in the Olympic decathlon.

‘The Catch’ didn’t quite make it

Early-on in voting, Noah Brown’s behind the back catch against Oklahoma was in the running to win “Best Play”. He was up against an impressive catch by the NFL’s Julian Edelman in the tournament-style voting, and fell short of the final four.

But, you can watch it again here:

If the Buckeyes could get Dobbs out (and away) from Michigan, it would be a huge get.

The college football recruiting world in now in the quiet period which greatly limits contact between coaches and the players they are recruiting. Though news was sparse yesterday, there was some things worth taking note of.

Dobbs to FNL

According to reports, 2019 offensive tackle Devontae Dobbs will be making a trip to Columbus for Friday Night Lights. Dobbs, from Michigan, is currently rated as the No. 1 tackle in the country and the No. 18 overall player. Dobbs has excelled on the camp scene this summer and continues to rise each time a rating update is released.

Country's No. 1 2019 offensive tackle @Devontae_Dobbs will return to #OhioState for Friday Night Lights FREE https://t.co/n1RbiQnK5m

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) July 11, 2017

Ohio State has done a good job putting themselves in a position in this one as there is big-time mutual interest between both parties. Dobbs last visited Columbus in April. Though Ohio State is near the top of his list, they will have their work cut out for them going up against the in-state Wolverines. Kerry Coombs has taken the lead in this recruitment and will be looking to pull in yet another elite out of state prospect.

Smith not making it to FNL

Class of 2018 defensive end Tyreke Smith tweeted that he will not be able to make it to Friday Night Lights, but will be working to be back on campus soon. Ohio State has emerged as the favorite for Smith after he has also had a good summer. Penn State looks to give the Buckeyes the most competition to land his services.

I will not be able to make Ohio states Friday Night Lights...But I will be back in Columbus soon ❗

— Tyreke Smith™ (@T_23_baller) July 11, 2017

Currently, on the 247sports crystal ball, Smith has an overwhelming 92 percent of recruiting analysts believing he’ll go to the Buckeyes, and 8 percent seeing him head off to University Park, Penn. and the Nittany Lions.

We’ll definitely keep you posted if anything changes in this race for one of the top prospects from Ohio’s 2018 recruiting cycle.

LGHL Former Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk is ready for life after football

Former Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk is ready for life after football

usa_today_8918735.0.jpg

The Buckeye legend had a great career at both the college and professional level but is ready to succeed in retirement.

“I’ll always miss playing the game and I’ll forever be grateful for all it has given me, and I’m pretty determined to not end up as a retirement horror story.”

- A.J. Hawk, The Players’ Tribune

A.J. Hawk is quite the legend around Columbus, Ohio for his dominance with Ohio State during his years with the Buckeyes. A fearsome linebacker that made quite the career for himself in the NFL, Hawk finished with 644 tackles during his tenure at the professional level and was a staple of the Green Bay Packers defense for much of his time there. Now, Hawk is headed for retirement after short stints with the Bengals and Falcons. But Hawk is aware of the problem many players who retire from the NFL face. Like he mentions in his article, there are a lot of players who simply don’t know what they can do as passionately as they played football and are stuck in sort of a limbo for the rest of their lives in some cases.

Hawk is determined to make the most of his retirement, though. He’s already planning on filling his schedule with plenty of appearances and wants to pursue a career in broadcasting - something that has become common among former players at the professional level of sports. Regardless of where he ends up or what he does, you can rest assured Hawk won’t be one of those retirement stories that people want to avoid.

“[Award Watch List] John Mackey Award: Marcus Baugh, Rimington Trophy: Billy Price.”

- Ohio State Buckeyes

It’s award season once again, and you know that means Ohio State will be involved. There have already been a few announcements as to who made the watch list for several other awards, but the John Mackey award (nation’s top tight end) and the Rimington Trophy (nation’s top center) announced their watch lists for the season. Marcus Baugh from Ohio State made the cut on the watch list after contributing 24 receptions for 269 yards in 2016. If he can replicate his success from last season this year, Baugh has a chance to finish into school history as a top 10 tight end in terms of receptions.

The other Buckeye to make a watch list was Billy Price. Another senior for Ohio State, Price has been a solid contributor on the offensive line his whole career and he is a returning first-team All-American and all-Big Ten Conference honoree. The past three seasons, Price hasn’t missed a game as a starter and will try to follow the footsteps that Pat Elflein left behind after winning the Rimington Trophy last season before jumping into the NFL.

Unlike last year, when Oklahoma had to open with a "neutral site" game against Houston (still in Houston by the way) before playing Ohio State, the Sooners have a much easier road to the Buckeyes this time around. Oklahoma opens at home against UTEP on Sept. 2 before traveling to Columbus.

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Bill Landis of Cleveland.com is going through each of the opponents Ohio State faces this season and giving a percentage chance of that team beating the Buckeyes. This season, when Ohio State hosts Oklahoma in Columbus, Landis gives the Buckeyes a 43 percent chance to lose to the Sooners. Last season, in the same sort of article, Landis gave Ohio State a 70 percent chance to lose when they traveled to Norman, Okla. After a big win over Oklahoma, the Buckeyes rolled their way to the College Football Playoff (after a road bump against Penn State) and the Sooners also finished strong, not losing another game.

This season, things are a little different for Ohio State. And a lot is different for the Sooners. To start off, they no longer have Bob Stoops at the helm after he announced his retirement. Baker Mayfield returns but does lose some weapons in the forms of Joe Mixon, Dede Westbrook and Samaje Perine. So the Sooners will have to find some new playmakers that Mayfield can work with. The good news, in addition to Mayfield, is that Oklahoma returns an experienced offensive line that should improve even more from last season. Either way, it’s sure to be a top game in the second week of college football that should bring plenty of eyes upon the Horseshoe.

We’re counting down the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities, and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 9: Parris Campbell

Position: H-Back

2016 stats: 13 receptions, 121 yards; 4 carries, 54 yards, 1 TD; 21 kick returns, 584 yards

Why he’s No. 9: After spending the first two seasons of his career as an outside receiver in Ohio State’s sub-par aerial attack, the former St. Vincent- St. Mary standout officially made the switch to H-back, where he has gigantic shoes to fill—Curtis Samuel’s shoes, to be exact. Samuel gained 1,636 yards from scrimmage and was Urban Meyer’s do-everything guy and most electrifying player last season. But after underperforming as an outside receiver, yet making plays on special teams — especially as a kick returner — Campbell will have a chance to shine as the starter in the most creative role in Meyer’s offense.

Since we haven’t had many chances to see Campbell with the football in his hands, the best way to gauge his future success was in the spring game, where he flat out looked the part. What we learned from the spring game is that Kevin Wilson will make J.T. Barrett get the ball out of his hands much quicker than ever before, and he’s going to utilize Campbell on a bunch of quick hitters such as screens, shallow crossers and quick outs. Campbell will also be able to use his quickness on banana routes and corner patterns. If the spring game showed us anything, Campbell will be extremely busy under Wilson.

One could argue that Campbell could be in the top five on this list, but with playmakers such as K.J. Hill, Demario McCall and Eric Glover-Williams behind him, there is quality depth that could pick up the pieces if Campbell misses time. If there’s one thing that Urban Meyer does better than anyone, it’s finding elite athletes to fill the H-back position.

Entering camp, the H-back spot is Campbell’s to lose, and Meyer has high hopes for the 6’1, 208-lb receiver. “We moved Parris inside a little bit, and he’s dynamic,” Meyer said. “He was a running back in high school. Big dude that can run and catch — he’s that guy right now.”

Previous: No. 10, Sean Nuernberger
