The last U.S. total solar eclipse in 1979 brought good things to Ohio State football. Can 2017 do the same?

230086.0.jpg

The year was 1979, a year that saw the Buckeyes bounce back from a bowl loss to Clemson by going undefeated in the regular season—and advancing to a Rose Bowl.

The time has come: a total solar eclipse has made it’s way to THE continental United States of America. The last time this happened, it was in The Year of our Lord 1979. Wild times those were—I wasn’t alive back then, but it was the 70s, and those seemed like wild times. I mean, 1979 featured Queen releasing a hit in “Don’t Stop Me Now,” Margaret Thatcher becoming the first women Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, ESPN getting launched, and McDonald’s coming out with the Happy Meal.

But, we haven’t touched on one of the most important topics of 1979: the college football season. Was it as crazy as 2007? Nah, not really. But, the end product was sorta the same. Just like in the 2007 edition of CFB, the 1979 season featured the Ohio State Buckeyes running the table en route to a Rose Bowl appearance—basically, a de facto national championship game. The Buckeyes ran through a tough non-conference foe in UCLA that season, had an early conference matchup on the road against Minnesota, and they had to travel to Ann Arbor to take down a Michigan team on the outside of the Top-10.

On this undefeated journey—one that started after OSU lost to Clemson in the infamous Citrus Bowl, which then propelled Earle Bruce to assemble the group of Buckeyes out for revenge on the college football landscape—quarterback Art Schlichter threw for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns, and finished fourth on the Heisman voting. Also on the offense, guard Ken Fritz earned a spot on the All-American team. Collectively, those ‘79 Buckeyes forced 31 turnovers, and held teams to under 10 points per game, according to the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia.

This Bruce-coached squad began the season outside of the AP Top 25, but then racked up the wins. Below is the reign of destruction the ‘79 Buckeyes left.

The Buckeyes tore through their slate of games. That’s the good news. However, there is some bad news. If history repeats itself, which, judging by the preseason predictions, might happen, USC and Alabama will be in the title picture this season—just as they were in 1979. The Rose Bowl in 1979 was a showdown between No. 1 Ohio State and No. 3 USC.

If the Buckeyes would’ve defeated USC, they would’ve been in serious conversation for a share of the national title. However, there’s a reason would’ve is used instead of did. The Trojans beat the Buckeyes in the 1980 Rose Bowl, 17-16.

Adding insult to injury, No. 2 Alabama played No. 6 Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl, and the Crimson Tide thumped the Razorbacks, 24-9. And just like that, Alabama claimed their 11th national title. The final standings to the 1979 season: Alabama (1), USC (2), Oklahoma (3), and Ohio State (4).

So, this now brings us to 2017: the year were the total eclipse makes its return to the U.S. Is it a coincidence that the storylines from 1979 run similar to 2017? Probably. But, putting on the tinfoil hat and finding ways for this correlation to equal causation is a fun occupation.

Once again, Alabama, USC and Ohio State are all back on the race for the national championship, and OSU’s journey to the top of the mountain comes on the heels of a loss to Clemson in a bowl game; additionally, the Buckeyes have a stellar QB at the helm in J.T. Barrett to guide them through the twist and turns of the season.

If the 2017 season ends up being 1979 version 2.0, then it might be a downer for Buckeye nation. But, things tend to not break the same way the second time around.

What do you think will happen in the 2017 season with the Buckeyes? Will it be like 1979? More like 2014? Let us know below.

Alabama collects a vast majority of first-place votes.

Today, the Associated Press released their official preseason College Football Top-25 poll, and it sees the Ohio State Buckeyes coming in at No. 2, behind only the Alabama Crimson Tide. ‘Bama collected 1,513 points compared to OSU’s 1,414. Rounding out the Top-5 are Florida State, USC and Clemson. Alabama earned the vast majority of first-place votes, standing atop 52 of the 61 ballots. Ohio State earned three first-place nods, FSU four, and USC two.

The Penn State Nittany Lions come in at No. 6, with the Buckeyes’ Week 2 opponent, the Oklahoma Sooners sitting at seventh. Wisconsin slides into the Top-10 at No. 9, followed by Michigan at 11. No other Big Ten teams made the initial AP poll.

No. 1 Alabama and No. 3 Florida State will open their respective seasons in Atlanta on Sept. 2. That game will air on ABC at 8/7c. Earlier that day, No. 11 Michigan takes on No. 17 Florida from Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, TX at 3:30/2:30c, also on ABC.

No. 2 Ohio State opens their season on the road against Indiana on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 8/7c. In addition to hosting “College GameDay,” the game will be broadcast on ESPN with their Megacast treatment.

RB Jordan Leasure (Official Thread)

WALK-ON RUNNING BACK JORDAN LEASURE BRINGS TOUGHNESS, HARD WORK TO OHIO STATE
Dan Hope on August 21, 2017 at 8:35 am @dan_hope

A dislocated shoulder couldn’t stop Jordan Leasure from continuing to practice during his first season at Ohio State.

Even though Leasure didn’t play in any games for the Buckeyes last season, he still felt it was important to be on the practice field every day despite his injury.

"I was trying to give the best look to my guys," Leasure said. "We were kind of low on scout-team running backs. That’s what I was last year, so I knew I had to get back quick … and then once I was good to go, it was just keep on going."

A walk-on running back from Amanda, Ohio, Leasure knew he wasn’t going to play last year even if he was healthy. He’s not guaranteed to see playing time this year, and even if he does, it will likely only be in a limited capacity. But none of that deterred him from practicing through the pain last year or continuing to work hard this year.

"It’s a lot of hard work. You do exactly what you’re asked, and you try to do above that," Leasure said. "My role here is just like everybody else. You’re making the team better. You do whatever the coaches ask, and then you try to do some more."

Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford replied without hesitation – then repeated his answer five times – when asked what Leasure brings to the group of players he coaches.

"Toughness," Alford said. "Toughness, toughness, toughness, toughness, toughness."

Alford says Leasure has "garnered a lot of respect" from his coaches and teammates.

"When he speaks, guys listen," Alford said. "He doesn’t say much. Guys will be bantering back and forth, they’ll say a lot. But then all of a sudden, he speaks and everyone shuts up and listens. Which tells you that’s the mark of a guy that they have respect for."

A pair of standout juniors are still considering playing for the Buckeyes.

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff seem to always have the Buckeyes fighting for a title. Recruits from across the country have definitely taken notice of what’s going on in Columbus.

Almost every day, it seems at least one recruit names OSU among his leaders. This weekend was no different.

2019 OL names leaders

Ohio State already holds a verbal commitment from class of 2018 five-star quarterback Emory Jones, but that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes are done trying to add more Jones’ to their future roster.

Over the weekend, Emory’s cousin and class of 2019 offensive guard Keiondre Jones announced his current leaders. Trimming down his list to 11 programs from well over 20 scholarship offers, the 6'4, 315-pound junior is still considering a pledge to Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, Florida State, Tennessee, Auburn, or South Carolina.

But wait ......there's more pic.twitter.com/rGURcPNGq3

— © (@keiondrejones) August 18, 2017

One of the most sought-after linemen in the Peach State, Jones, who suits up at Callaway High School in Hogansville, Georgia, is currently considered the third offensive guard and the 53rd overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Buckeyes still in the mix for 2019 LB

Jones wasn’t the only junior to release his leaders this weekend. On Sunday evening, 2019 outside linebacker Marcel Brooks also dropped his list.

Nine programs—Ohio State, Oregon, TCU, Texas, Penn State, LSU, Florida State, Oklahoma, and Alabama—made the cut for the 6'3, 200-pound Texas native.

TOP9 Recruiting process still open @simplyCoachO pic.twitter.com/iZcbOw7EAk

— FrEE sNiPER 5 (@MarcelBrooks_5) August 20, 2017

Even though it isn’t in their backyard, Ohio State has put in some major work trying to build a pipeline into the state of Texas. While Brooks is undoubtedly interested in OSU after locking in his scholarship offer earlier this month, it might be hard for the Buckeyes to pluck the linebacker out of the Longhorn State. At the moment most believe he’ll stay closer to home.

Quick Hits

  • Newly hired head coach Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball program offered four-star class of 2018 power forward Colin Castleton on Saturday afternoon. Castleton, a 6'10, 215-pound senior from Father Lopez Catholic in Daytona Beach, Florida, also holds scholarship offers from the likes of Illinois, Xavier, and Clemson.

Overall, the black stripe removal count is up to 11.

For every new member of the Ohio State football team, getting their black stripe removed in camp shows the hard work and dedication needed to succeed as a Buckeye. When the underclassman gets his black stripe removed, it’s a symbol to the upperclassman and coaches that he’s earned his spot on the Scarlet and Gray.

This weekend, three members of the Buckeyes 2017 class got their black stripe removed. On Saturday, it was safety Brendon White. White made it known on Twitter that he got his black stripe removed.

On Sunday, it was the duo of quarterback Tate Martell and offensive guard Wyatt Davis. Once again, it was Twitter that had the news of the black stripe removal of the highly touted QB and OG.

Since Aug, 4, the black stripes have been coming off consistently for the new members of the OSU football team. Running back J.K. Dobbins was the first member of this camp to get his stripe removed. Below is the full chart of the stripes that have been removed since camp started.
