The Buckeyes open conference play at Wisconsin, and close conference play at Indiana.

On Wednesday, the Big Ten Conference released the conference slates for the 2017-18 men’s basketball season, and Ohio State will open their B1G schedule in Madison, Wis. on Dec. 2.

The schedule sees the Buckeyes take on Michigan, Iowa, Rutgers, Penn State and Indiana twice, with single home games against Michigan State, Maryland, Nebraska, and Illinois. OSU will travel to take on Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota and Purdue.

New head coach Chris Holtmann’s first season in Columbus officially kicks off on Nov. 10 against Robert Morris, and features non-conference games against Gonzaga, Clemson, North Carolina, Miami (OH), and either Florida or Stanford.

This is the earliest that the Buckeyes have opened the conference season in recent memory, with five non-conference games coming after OSU takes on Wisconsin and Michigan.

Also, what did Urban tell a four-star wide receiver that has him on the verge of committing to OSU?

“I came here to Ohio State because I wanted to compete and be the guy. That's gonna take time, but right now it's the 2017 season and we're just worried about continuing to get better for Indiana.”

-Dwayne Haskins via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

The age-old adage goes that the back-up quarterback is always everyone’s favorite player. Ohio State has certainly had its share of popular No. 2s over the years, including Stanley Jackson, Joe Germaine, (Stanley Jackson again), Steve Bellisari, Kenny Guiton, and even J.T. Barrett.

However, coming into the 2017 season, the intense attention is on Barrett’s back-up not in hopes that he upsets the established starter, but instead for what it could mean for the future of the program.

Now as a redshirt senior, Barrett has cemented himself as the starter barring injury or unforeseen off-field issue, so there is no repeat of the who-will-start suspense of 2015, but fans have become invested in the battle between Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins, after seeing extended glimpses of both during last April’s spring game. What might have been most interesting about the pair is that, though both have tremendous talent, at this point, they appear to be very different quarterbacks.

As Landis says in his article, the biggest difference between the two is that Burrow is firmly entrenched in the way that the OSU offensive coaching staff wants the position played. He understands how Urban Meyer, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day want decisions made, and, for better or for worse, is very much in the Barrett mold, especially as his arm strength has improved during his three years in Columbus.

Haskins on the other hand, is still a bit raw, despite his incredible physical gifts. Just a redshirt freshman, the QB acknowledges that he has room to improve.

"Everyone knows I can throw the ball, but it's more than that to play quarterback here at Ohio State,” Haskins said, according to Landis.

“I just feel like he bonded with Coach (Urban) Meyer. Blue wants to be a wide receiver. He sees himself as a wide receiver, so nobody should recruit him as a tight end.”

- Bill Greene, via Ben Roberts, Kentucky.com

Despite the fact that Ohio State currently has the top-ranked 2018 recruiting class according to 247 Sports, one thing that is conspicuously missing from the 16 current commits is a wide-receiver. However, the Buckeyes are in the mix for at least a half dozen four-star or better receivers, including five-star WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jalen Hall, and four-star guys Kamryn Babb and L’Christian “Blue” Smith.

The fact that OSU is pursuing Smith as a WR might be what ultimately cements a commitment later this month. According to Scout.com’s Bill Greene, the fact that Meyer apparently has clarified his positional intentions for the 6-foot-6, 205-pound athlete might have given him the edge.

The OSU coach told Smith that he believes that the position he would play for the Buckeyes would depend upon what his body does over the next few years. If he stays at or around his current size, then wide receiver makes the most sense. However, if he continues to grow and add bulk, a move to tight end might be necessary.

Smith plans to announce his commitment at his high school during the weekend of Aug. 25. He is currently considered a heavy OSU lean, with his home-state UK Wildcats also in the mix.

“First-year OSU quarterbacks coach/co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day explained that the Buckeyes also need to stretch the field horizontally with wide receiver screens, swing passes and other quick throws.”

- Dave Biddle, BuckNuts

Depending on how you viewed Ohio State’s offense last season, the above statement might not be exactly what you wanted to hear as the Buckeyes prepare to open their season two weeks from tomorrow.

In 2016, one of the most consistent complaints about the OSU offense was that Barrett didn’t throw the ball deep often enough, and when he did, it was off-target more often than not. As the 2017 season quickly approaches, much of the talk about Barrett’s performance during camp is that he has dramatically improved his deep passing game, which is a relief to many.

However, Day has said that he and fellow new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson have been spending as much time on the short passing game as the deep.

Day said that they want to use their offensive skill guys in these quick passing situations as an extension of the running game. Day did clarify that this was in an effort to keep defenses on their heels, and prevent them from loading the box, which became a problem last season.

“I just know that with our offensive line and our running back and our tight end and obviously our quarterback, they want to gang up on us,” Day said according to Biddle. “So, in order to operate at a high level we want to make sure we stretch the field both vertically and horizonally (sic).”

Testudo Times joins our podcast to talk about the ‘Sleeping Giant™’

Maryland has long been described as one of college football’s “sleeping giants.” The Terps are in the middle of one of the most talent-rich recruiting areas in the nation, can now boast Big Ten membership to recruits, plus have an apparel sponsor willing to go the extra mile for them, among other things. It would seem that all of the ingredients are there for Maryland to be a top-flight football program.

While the on-field product hasn’t met that potential yet, head coach D.J. Durkin is doing his damnedest to change that. In his first season, the Terps did just enough to earn a bowl bid, signed a top-20 recruiting class, and appear to have forward momentum for the first time since the Ralph Friedgen era. So, is it time for the sleeping giant to finally wake up?

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Testudo Times’ Jared Goldstein joins the show to talk about the progress Durkin has made in just over a year, and the outlook for the 2017 Terrapins, including:

  • Battling with Ohio State and other big-time programs for recruits in the DMV area.
  • Why running backs Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison should be able to hold it down for the offense while the quarterback situation is figured out.
  • Fixing an awful run defense, and playing younger players in the front seven.
  • Why their tough schedule may mean a worse record than last year, but a better team overall.
  • Expectations for the season, building for 2018, and more!

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The Buckeyes get one step closer to securing another 2018 prospect.

Ayala’s top 9

Chris Holtmann’s OSU basketball program has been making moves on the recruiting trail. On Tuesday, the Buckeyes got a little bit closer to securing a four-star guard in the 2018 class, as Eric Ayala (Bradenton, FL/Putnam Science Academy) unveiled his final nine schools.

FINAL9️⃣ pic.twitter.com/RwhfZLNOLl

— Eric Ayala (@EA_Glo) August 15, 2017

Ohio State finds themselves on the list, but the room is filled; Miami (FL), LSU, Arizona, Indiana, Oregon, Syracuse, Georgetown, and Maryland are also in the running for the No. 73 prospect in the class, according to 247sports.

On the 247sports Crystal Ball, eight predictions are in for Ayala. Of those eight, seven recruiting analysts have the Florida native heading to New York—more specifically, Syracuse. However, one prediction came in for the Buckeyes. That’s good news for OSU, as they made an offer to Ayala back in June, and according to 247sports, are one of the latest schools to make him an offer.

Ayala is also graded as the 10th-best prospect from Florida and the sixth-best combo guard in the country for the 2018 recruiting cycle.

If more news breaks on Ayala, we’ll be sure to have you covered.

Ahrens’ visit list includes OSU and UM

Staying on the hardwood, OSU basketball is trying to get another 2018 prospect to Columbus. Or in this case, trying to get him back to committing to the Buckeyes. Three-star small forward and former Buckeye commit Justin Ahrens (Versailles, OH/Versailles) is beginning to set his visit list, and so far, Ohio State and Michigan have reservations.

The No. 7 prospect from the Buckeye State won’t be alone on the visit, though. Four-star combo guard Dwayne Cohill (Cleveland, OH/Holy Name) will also be making the trek to Ohio State on Sept. 23. On Twitter, Cohill and Ahrens tweeted about each other—and made it a point for Buckeye nation to follow them on the social media site.

buckeyenation go give my bro @ahrensjustin12 a follow! we'll be down to see you guys September 23rd can't wait⭕⭕https://t.co/MycMOW2779

Sept. 23rd my bro @therealdwayne35 and I will be on official to OSU.. buckeyenation show love ❤️‼️ https://t.co/ed8gbx5eKJ

— Justin Ahrens•• (@ahrensjustin12) August 15, 2017

As things stand right now, the signs point to Ahrens leaning toward Michigan. The 247sports Crystal Ball predictions all vote, unanimously, in favor of the Wolverines . However, Cohill is seen to be an OSU lean.

If the visit goes well, Holtmann and the Buckeyes are still in the fight for Ahrens. OSU already has one commitment for the 2018 class in Torrence Watson, a three-star shooting guard. With a little more time before the Sept. 23 visit, Holtmann and his staff can improve on the rapport—helping their chances even more on securing a monster class by the time 2018 is all said and done.

Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett ready to take more risks when looking for receivers

The redshirt senior QB might be throwing more interceptions this season but that could be a good thing.

“In the NFL, nobody's really open if you think about it. You think about third down and playing man-to-man, nobody's really open. What we do on defense here at Ohio State with the press quarters, it's challenging every throw. So with that, you have to do your best to give your guy the opportunity to touch the football.”

- J.T. Barrett via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Many times in the past few seasons with J.T. Barrett at quarterback for Ohio State, there would be plays where it seemed like Barrett had nobody to throw to. In his mind, nobody was open. If there was a defender in the vicinity, Barrett considered his receiver covered and would often throw it away or tuck it and run. Now, it seems like quarterbacks coach Ryan Day has made an excellent impact on the redshirt senior as Barrett says he has a much different mindset when looking to throw to his wideouts this season.

In the article above, Day talked about explaining that throwing to receivers with defenders is fine, as long as Barrett throws to a spot where only the receiver can get to it. It’s a phrase that’s pretty common when watching the NFL or even high level college games. So it’s very possible we might see a few more interceptions from Barrett this season, but if the trade-off is a more explosive passing attack that can help balance the running game, then by all means, fire away.

“Barrett may not possess knock-you-on-your-back arm strength or blinding speed, but his all-around athleticism has helped him produce a school-record 100 touchdowns and 6,381 passing yards in his first three seasons.”

- Luke Knox, ESPN

Continuing with the J.T. Barrett theme, the senior quarterback was also included in ESPN’s list of ‘returning stars’ in their ‘College Football Year of the Quarterback’ feature. The ‘draft darlings’ category included USC’s Sam Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, and UCLA’s Josh Rosen. The returning stars included Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield (who the Buckeyes play this season), Washington’s Jake Browning, and of course Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett. The final category was ‘the next wave’ which had the trio of Florida State’s Deondre Francois, Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham, and Alabama’s Jalen Hurts.

It’s no surprise that Barrett is included with these star quarterbacks, considering as a freshman Barrett finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting. He also has amassed a 26-4 record as a starter with the Buckeyes under Urban Meyer. While he’s had his ups and downs with injuries and sharing time with Cardale Jones, the three-time captain will certainly go down in school history as one of the best to ever do it in the scarlet and gray.

“We'd rather not use (Barrett) as much. That's not an indication things are going well. Sometimes you need to do it. But that's also a get-out-of-jail-free card when things aren't going as well. So right now the receivers are playing at a fairly high level. At times when we use (the quarterback run) too much, that's when things aren't clicking at other spots.”

- Urban Meyer via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ever since Urban Meyer came to Columbus to become head coach of Ohio State, quarterback runs have been a staple of the Buckeyes’ offense. And for good reason, as Meyer has already won a Big Ten championship and national championship with this strategy. The numbers game when the quarterback is able to effectively run the football is advantageous in many ways, but it also has some risk involved. Braxton Miller had several injuries during his tenure at quarterback and J.T. Barrett suffered a season-ending injury in 2014, as well. In general, it’s nice to have the advantage but you don’t want your quarterback broken to pieces by the end of the season.

With Kevin Wilson coming from Indiana to become the offensive coordinator, there’s already been talk about limiting the amount of carries Barrett gets, and while we’ve heard this before in recent years, it is interesting to see Meyer actually come out and say that the quarterback running so much is not a good sign in relation to how the offense is performing. He views it as a ‘get-out-jail-free card’ which is likely true, and with that in mind it will be something worth watching this season if Barrett and the offense can not rely on his running ability to move the chains and score points like they have the past two seasons.
