Saturday was ugly. But that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes are done for the season.

“But if Ohio State is going to duplicate the bounce-back run to the national title of the 2014 squad, it will need to keep these lessons in mind as it regroups for a nonconference matchup with Army this week.”

-Austin Ward, Land of 10

As troubling as Ohio State’s loss to Oklahoma Saturday was, there is no reason to hit the panic button just yet. The Buckeyes still have every opportunity to win a Big Ten title, and the nonconference loss happened early enough in the season that Ohio State still has a chance to recover before the selection committee makes its initial picks for the College Football Playoff. However, in order to get to that point, the Buckeyes need to make some obvious improvements on both sides of the ball. Just as the 2014 squad came together following the loss to Virginia Tech in Week 2, so does this team need to mature and gel as a unit.

For starters, even with the renewed passing attack promised by Kevin Wilson’s new offense, the strength of Ohio State’s offense lies in its running game. With Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins at running back and J.T. Barrett at quarterback, opposing defenses have a tough time figuring out how to stop the Buckeyes’ three-headed running monster. Unfortunately, the trio didn’t get nearly as many touches as they probably should have in retrospect, with Weber and Dobbins combining for just 16 carries. While Barrett himself had 18 carries for 66 yards, better utilization of the tailbacks could have resulted in a stronger offensive performance overall for the Buckeyes.

On the defensive side, the defensive line showed why they are one of the elite units in college football, with Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Nick Bosa combining to wreak havoc on Baker Mayfield. Hubbard and Bosa both got a sack on Saturday night.

In terms of specialists, kicker Sean Nuernberger and punter Drue Chrisman provided the efficiency and excellence that has come to be expected at Ohio State in terms of special teams. Nuernberger connected on all three of his field goal attempts while Chrisman averaged 46 yards per punt, landing all four attempts inside of Oklahoma’s 20 yard line.

“Ohio State fans need only to point to an opposing quarterback planting a crimson-and-cream flag at midfield in the Horseshoe. After two weeks of the 2017 season, Auburn, Notre Dame and Ohio State are among the biggest disappointments in college football.”

-Mark Schlabach, ESPN

The good news for Ohio State, after a more-than-disappointing loss to Oklahoma over the weekend, is that they are, at least, not alone. Auburn, who was taken down by Clemson Saturday, allowed 11 sacks on quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Stidham also recorded just 79 passing yards, which makes J.T. Barrett’s 183 seem perfectly reasonable. Notre Dame, meanwhile, suffered a one-point loss to Georgia Saturday, despite 12 penalties and two turnovers by the Bulldogs, who were also starting a freshman quarterback.

All three of these teams entered the 2017 season with high expectations, given massive changes for all three programs in the offseason. Adjustments to Ohio State’s coaching staff have been well-documented, especially Kevin Wilson’s arrival as offensive coordinator and Ryan Day’s appointment as quarterbacks coach. At Notre Dame, Brian Kelly completely overhauled the program, hiring 17 new assistants and coordinators to the coaching staff. Gus Malzahn, while less extreme, also facilitated serious adjustments in the offseason, bringing in a new offensive coordinator and gaining Stidham as a transfer from Baylor.

However, those high expectations were, perhaps, highest for Ohio State, who entered the season ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll. Despite an embarrassing, shutout loss in the Fiesta Bowl to Clemson, there was still an expectation that the Buckeyes would come back as a much-improved team in the fall. While those expectations may have been too high, given the youth of the secondary and the inexperience of many of the wide receivers, the team was supposed to show dominance in other position groups early. Barrett, for instance, was supposed to assert himself in Wilson’s new system, the veteran and three-time captain leading the charge.

Still, the season is young. The Buckeyes have a lot of adjustments to make, but given their next three matchups against Army, UNLV and Rutgers, they should have some space to make changes.

“While none of that is good, it obscures the other, equally glaring crisis on the other side of the ball: Ohio State’s pass defense has been a complete catastrophe through two games.”

-Zach Barnett, NBC Sports

While much of the criticism following Ohio State’s 31-16 loss to Oklahoma Saturday centered on a poor offensive attack plan, perhaps the greater crisis is one which has been lurking since the spring: the utter lack of reliability in the secondary. With the lure of new offensive weapons and a defensive line that can dismantle opposing offensive lines, the fact that the Buckeyes lost three first round picks at cornerback and safety, and that these players would need to be replaced by individuals with much less experience, seemed to go under the radar.

However, that fact has now become undeniable, as Ohio State has allowed more passing yards than literally every other team in the FBS through two weeks of play. What makes this drop particularly troubling is that the Buckeyes were seventh in the category last year, allowing just 172.2 passing yards per game. Overall defensive pass efficiency has dropped from No. 3 in the NCAA to No. 110 as the Buckeyes have allowed completions on 69 of 103 passes attempted against them for 806 yards, six touchdowns and two picks. They are the fourth-most passed against team in the country, and the six touchdowns given up through the air are more than all but six teams currently.

Even so, two games is a small sample size, especially when those two games come against two of the top passing teams in the country. Oklahoma did finish last season ranked 12th nationally in passing offense, averaging 318 yards per game through the air. Indiana, meanwhile, was 28th in the NCAA, with 273.8 passing yards per game. In many ways, this statistic is a reflection of the teams played so far this season, and there is still opportunity to improve for the young unit. The good news for the Buckeyes is that Army, their opponent this weekend, has just 17 passing yards on the season.

Podcasting about the Buckeyes’ latest dreadful performance in a big game.

It’s a minor miracle that Ohio State only lost to Oklahoma by 15 points. From the start, the Buckeyes were completely outplayed in all three facets of the game, and only a litany of first half mistakes from the Sooners kept the home team’s hopes alive.

After a quick Ohio State touchdown drive to start the second half, the Sooners played near-perfect football, scoring touchdowns on four of their next five drives, and holding the Buckeyes to just two field goals the rest of the way. While it’s easy to place all the blame on J.T. Barrett, the Buckeyes were lackluster across the board, and have a lot of questions to answer over the next couple of weeks before they begin Big Ten play.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn discuss everything Ohio State’s lopsided loss, and how almost everyone—from the coaches to the players—looked bad. The guys try to break down exactly what went wrong, including:

  • Barrett’s struggles, and what they think of his status as the starting quarterback.
  • The coaching staff’s questionable playcalling, and their decision to not feed the ball to J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber.
  • Another head-scratching game from #Zone6
  • Why the defense (including the vaunted Ohio State defensive line) looked so overmatched.
  • Concerns about poor play from the linebackers and secondary, and more.

To wrap it up, the guys give their thoughts about Baker Mayfield planting the OU flag at mid-field, fan support at the game and on Twitter, why the season isn’t lost, and their early impressions of this week’s game against Army.

The Buckeyes coach touched on the Oklahoma loss, and questions regarding J.T. Barrett

Urban Meyer had his weekly press conference today; he touched on some questions regarding the Oklahoma loss, quarterback J.T. Barrett, and previewing Army West Point.

Here were the main points

• After the tough loss, Meyer said that he and the coaches went through the phases of “devastated to crushed to pissed” and you have to move on. Meyer said they are currently between the “pissed and moving forward” phases.

• The Wishbone offense gives Army West Point an identity.

• Whoever gets the starting job is the one who gives the Buckeyes the best chance to succeed. He also said that there “isn’t really a question” in regards to who will be the starting QB for Ohio State.

• Guys doing too much and not doing their responsibilities on defense led to Oklahoma making plays. Meyer also said the secondary did not play well against the Sooners.

• Meyer’s not blaming anybody for the loss — they’ve had close losses before. Playcalling will be reevaluated.

• Evolution of defenses has made the OSU offense evolve as well.

• Meyer was aware of recruits making critical tweets of the program.

• Buckeyes have seen zone defenses before, and have practiced it — but haven’t practiced it enough.

• If Dwayne Haskins is “game ready,” he will get the chance to play. Meyer said it wasn’t the right time to put Haskins in the third quarter vs. OU.

• The intangibles (e.g. leadership ability) does play a role in who gets to start.

• Receiving rotation will keep on going; guys are still growing.

• Meyer said Austin Mack is probable for the Army West Point contest Saturday following a concussion against Oklahoma.

Mike Weber is not 100 percent, but there is anticipation that he will be 100 percent soon.

• How evaluations work: Can the personnel do what’s been done in the past.

• Some of the priorities are obvious, some are not.

• Meyer said J.T. is mentally tough and mature —he’s seen it all. With the corners, Meyer said that the position is tough as you’re on an island, but said that the staff will work on making sure that the players have the confidence and ability to do the job.

• On offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson: The flow and merging of ideas will constantly be added to make the offense better. Against Indiana, the flow in the second half was there; was not against Oklahoma.

This is the first installment of our weekly Buckeye roundup, here to get you caught up on the news, notes, and notable bits from Columbus and beyond.

Ohio State isn’t playing the best football right now.

They’re being out-coached, out-thought, out-played, and were dominated by an Oklahoma team that should have no business doing so. And you know what happens when the Oklahomas of the world beat you, in primetime, on your own turf?

This happens.

— Athlete Motivation™ (@MotiveAthletes) September 10, 2017

We kick off this inaugural Oval and Out, a weekly Buckeye roundup, on the heels of an embarrassing 31-16 loss to the Sooners. But we’re only entering Week Three of the college football season and Saturday night likely means little in the big picture (if OSU can it together, that is).

And there was a ton that went on this weekend that impacted or involved the Buckeyes in some fashion.

So how about I stop talking and we can get started.

Review: Oklahoma

Like I said, this was a tough one to swallow for OSU. Sooners’ coach Lincoln Riley had a great game plan in place and things could’ve gotten out of hand a lot sooner (see what I did there?) if not for so many missed opportunities in Buckeye territory.

Coach Urban Meyer and OSU did very little to stem the tide. The playcalling left fans with a mixed bag of confusion and frustration, while the offense went away from what it does best – running the ball – to doing what it does worst – throwing it. At least the Buckeyes defense defensive front hung in there.

Per the usual, though, J.T. Barrett looked off all night and couldn’t get into any kind of rhythm with his receivers, who in return can’t seem to get open downfield. Barrett’s atrocious stat line is as follows: 19 for 35, 183 yards and an interception. It may be time to discuss backup options.

On the other side of the field, Heisman Trophy contender Baker Mayfield threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns. He carved up the Scarlet and Gray’s secondary and made play after play for Oklahoma.

Mayfield told reporters after the highly anticipated meeting that the Sooners should’ve won by more.

He wasn’t lying.

Play of the Game

Only winners get to be in the play of the game. Not losers.

In all seriousness, the actual play of the game happened early in the fourth quarter. On first-and-goal, Mayfield escaped the pocket and zipped a perfectly placed pass to Trey Sermon, who fought his way into the end zone.

— Tino Bovenzi (@TinoBovenzi) September 10, 2017

The touchdown increased Oklahoma’s lead to 24-13 and sealed the Buckeyes fate.

Looking Ahead: Army Black Knights

Meyer and Co. will attempt to get back on track against 2-0 Army. The Black Knights are coming off a historic, record-breaking season that saw the team reach eight wins for the first time in 20 years, defeat Navy for the first time since 2001, and win a bowl game for the first time since 2010.

There were a whole lot of firsts last year, and the Black Knights return another quality roster this season. Senior quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw leads an offense that ranked second in the nation in rushing in 2016. The offensive line welcomes back four starters, not to mention the team’s top nine rushers.

While this one should really serve as a bounce back game, Army might still give OSU a scare early on.

State of the Big Ten

Those who tuned in Friday night watched Purdue rout Ohio 44-21. Maryland pummeled Towson 63-17. Michigan overcame a sloppy offensive outing and downed Cincinnati 36-14. The Cy-Hawk Trophy went to Iowa, who earned a thrilling 44-41 overtime victory over in-state rival Iowa State.

— Go Iowa Awesome (@IowaAwesome) September 9, 2017

New coach Lane Kiffin and his Florida Atlantic Owls dropped to 0-2 at the hands of Wisconsin. Star tailback Justin Jackson was held to 18 rushing yards and Northwestern was throttled 41-17 by Duke. Penn State pounded Pittsburgh 33-14, avenging the loss that kept them out of the College Football Playoff last year.

To round things out, Michigan State scored a nice 28-14 win at home against Western Michigan, Indiana made quick work of Virginia, Illinois won a 20-7 snoozer over Western Kentucky, and Minnesota defeated Oregon State 48-14.

In addition to Northwestern mentioned above, Rutgers, Nebraska, and OSU were the only other Big Ten teams that lost this weekend.

Play of the Week

There are a few different directions we can go here.

I’ll start us off with the ridiculousness that occurred between Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech.

That’s right. You just watched a bunch of 20-something-year-olds kick a football, like, 90 yards down the field.

Next up, we head out west to USC where stud quarterback Sam Darnold was doing Sam Darnold things with Stanford in town. The catch isn’t half bad, either.

Watching Sam Darnold throw a football is a fun activity pic.twitter.com/KIfnUwXGZY

— Jack Jorgensen (@JackJorgensen14) September 10, 2017

That’s Deontay Burnett laying out for the 25-yard touchdown grab, which put the Trojans ahead 28-17.

Our final stop is in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. There were definitely other plays of his to choose from, but the subject of this particular play needs no introduction.

Lamar Jackson would be 99 everything on NCAA Football 18 pic.twitter.com/wg6mmmogmf

— Jack McGuire (@JackMacCFB) September 9, 2017

2016 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Lamar Jackson, ladies and gentlemen.

Get used to the name.

Heisman Watch

So, yeah, I’m going to go with the Jackson guy from Louisville, the one that we just mentioned who won the Heisman Trophy last season.

Jackson absolutely shredded North Carolina’s defense on Saturday to the tune of 525 total yards and six touchdowns. The Florida native made big plays with both his legs and arm, showing he has a legitimate shot at being only the second player ever to be awarded the Heisman Trophy twice.

Lamar Jackson has 2 of the 3 seasons since 2000 in which a player accounted for 1,000 yards of offense through his team's first 2 games. pic.twitter.com/O8v9Uht7Mq

— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) September 9, 2017

No. 8 has steamrolled his way to Louisville’s Week Three showdown with defending national champion Clemson. The Tigers have one of, if not the best, defensive line in the country which should put Jackson to the test.

Game of the Week: Clemson v. Louisville

The ACC Atlantic title – let alone a postseason playoff spot – could be on the line when the Tigers and Cardinals square off in Louisville Saturday afternoon. Don’t plan on it simply being Jackson versus Clemson’s D-line, but whoever controls the trenches likely wins the day.

Led by Deshaun Watson’s five touchdown passes, the Tigers edged the Cardinals 42-36 in 2016. It was a shootout in every sense of the word, a shootout that Jackson thrived in, tallying 457 offensive yards and three touchdowns.

The outcome could hinge on the standout signal-caller’s ability to perform under pressure as a passer.

Monday Morning #HotTakez

  • Urban Meyer and his coaching staff need to strongly consider benching J.T Barrett. We’ve seen the same consistent ineffectiveness, especially in big games, for waaaay too long. So I think it’s time for a change. I like what backup Dwayne Haskins brings to the table.
  • The play calling on defense has been questionable through the first two weeks of the season. OSU’s young, inexperienced secondary has looked, in large part, mediocre. Some are surprised by that, I can’t say that I am.
  • Outside of Columbus, Michigan State appears steady. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke has settled in under center and with Notre Dame coming up, he can showcase himself to the country.

September 9, 2017: Brian Lewerke (@brianlewerke14) breaks free for a 61 yard touchdown run vs Western Michigan. pic.twitter.com/WLndyHesSd

— Sparty Moments (@SpartyMoments) September 10, 2017
  • Michigan is good if their defense can hold up. And the unit has held up thus far, scoring more points (21) than they’ve given up (17).
  • If Lamar Jackson can stay healthy for Louisville all season long, he’ll take home the Heisman. Book it.
  • Wisconsin is going to win the Big Ten West. Why? Iowa and Nebraska have tissue paper for defense.
  • When will the Big Ten get rid of divisions? The world may never know.
Oh, the Interweb

The feedback on Twitter to the Buckeyes loss was fantastic across the board. We’ll let ESPN analyst Desmond Howard get things started.

Buckeyes Bits

Land-Grant Holy Land has you covered on everything that is OSU. Win or lose, we’ve got your back.

Oval and Out

I’m not worried about the Buckeyes, and you shouldn’t be either.

Yes, significant flaws are there. The team continues to be outcoached in important matchups. J.T. Barrett can’t throw past five yards. Their offense looked widely ineffective and the secondary is underwhelming, to say the least.

Urban Meyer has some big decisions to make coming up, no doubt.

But the Scarlet and Gray still have all the pieces in place to make a run to the conference title game and the playoff. They’re strong in the trenches on both sides of the ball and have an awesome amount of potential at multiple positions.

Meyer is also a pretty good coach, in case you forgot.

Don’t panic just yet, Buckeye fans.

It’s only Week Three.

Waiting For Next Year
The Buckeyes scored the first touchdown of the game on the opening drive of the second half thanks to a 56-yard kick return by Parris Campbell. Besides that, their offense was very lackluster for much of the game, including J.T. Barrett's passing attack.

The Buckeyes didn’t win on Saturday, but still impressed top prospects.

Ohio State might not have walked away victorious on Saturday, falling to the Oklahoma Sooners 31-16, but they still impressed a long list of top recruits in Columbus for the game.

Cain enjoys OSU atmosphere

One of the most sought-after running back prospects in the class of 2019 got the opportunity to see what it would be it like toting the rock for the Buckeyes under the lights of Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

“I had a good trip and I got to experience the game day vibe, which was cool. The OSU fan base packed it with 109,000,” IMG Academy (FL) junior Noah Cain told Land-Grant Holy Land.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Cain, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season at Denton Guyer (TX), is currently considered the top running back and 12th overall prospect in the entire class of 2019.

Other than Ohio State, programs such as LSU, Miami, Michigan, and Nebraska are currently trying to add Cain to their football squad.

With well over a year until Noah signs with a school, the Buckeye staff made sure they expressed how much they’d love to have him in the Scarlet and Gray.

“They [the OSU coaches] said I'm a priority recruit for them,” Cain said.

2019 TE has great time at Ohio State

Ohio State has a roster stacked with young tight ends and already holds a verbal commitment from 2018 standout Jeremy Ruckert, but that doesn’t mean class of 2019 recruits aren’t keeping a close eye on the Ohio State program.

One of the junior tight end prospects keeping track of the Buckeyes made the trek from the Acworth, GA area to see what Ohio State has to offer on and off of the football field.

“It was awesome. I loved the campus and the atmosphere around campus. All the fans were great and I can't wait to get back,” four-star recruit Ryland Goede told LGHL.

He wasn’t the only one excited about his OSU visit—so were members of the Buckeye coaching staff. While roaming around campus, the 6’7 Goede grabbed a few minutes from numerous coaches, including Urban Meyer.

“I talked to Coach (Kerry) Coombs, (Kevin) Wilson, and (Urban) Meyer. Really they just gave me advice and told me how much they want me to get back up there and come play for them," Goede said.

Holding over a dozen scholarship offers from programs across the country, the Buckeyes find themselves up against the likes of Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and Nebraska for Goede, who hauled in 28 receptions for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns last season as a sophomore at Kennesaw Mountain (GA).
