Will Jaedon LeDee become the first commitment for the 2018 recruiting class later today?

Ohio State has had three recruits commit to its 2018 recruiting class. However, following a chaotic off-season, all three have since left the program, and the Buckeyes find themselves again looking for their first commitment.

Following Thad Matta’s departure from the program, three-star SF Justin Ahrens decided to reopen his recruitment and is now favored to commit to Buckeye arch-rival Michigan. Ohio State then quickly replaced Matta with Chris Holtmann, and soon after his arrival, four-star SG Dane Goodwin left the program and has since committed to Notre Dame. Holtmann and the coaching staff were then able to acquire three-star SG Torrence Watson, but due to personal reasons, Watson left the program last month to play closer to home and committed to Missouri.

Fortunately for the Buckeyes, it appears the program could finally earn that coveted commitment later today as four-star SF target Jaedon LeDee (Houston, TX/The Kinkaid School) is set to announce his collegiate decision.

Committing tomorrow stay tuned‼️

— Jaedon LeDee (@jae_ledee) September 18, 2017

LeDee would be a big win for Holtmann and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff as he is seen as the No. 31 SF in the country and is the No. 115 overall recruit in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The blue-chip prospect has acquired a reported 23 scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the country but has trimmed his list down to eight finalists. Along with Ohio State, Texas A&M, LSU, UCLA, Houston, Cal, Iowa State, and Oklahoma all made the cut for LeDee.

LeDee took an official visit to Columbus earlier this month, following an unofficial visit to Oklahoma. However, the timing of his announcement may spell bad news for the Buckeyes, as he officially visited Texas A&M this past weekend. The Aggies are the presumed favorite to land LeDee’s services, with 50-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions favoring the program. However, things appear to be trending in Ohio State’s favor, as four experts chose the Buckeyes as the predicted outcome yesterday.

It appears to be a two dog race for LeDee’s commitment and the Buckeyes are in the thick of it. With Holtmann and co. looking for their first commitment, LeDee is priority recruit number one for the Ohio State basketball program.

Ohio State makes the cut for 2019 CB

Ohio State learned that it has moved one step closer to acquiring a blue-chip cornerback prospect in next year's class - and the name will be familiar for Ohio State fans.

Four-star CB John Dixon (Tampa, FL/Wharton) took to Twitter yesterday to announce his current top schools. Ohio State, Auburn, Alabama, South Florida, Oregon, South Carolina, Florida, Florida State, and Tennessee were listed as Dixon’s top nine schools.

Top schools at the moment . Could change though pic.twitter.com/auX6LG96KO

— jcash (@Jxnny_Dixon) September 18, 2017

Dixon is just a junior in high school but is already garnering attention from the top college football programs in the country. He is currently listed as the No. 24 CB in next year’s class and is the No. 276 overall recruit in the country.

However, Dixon is off to a fast start this year, already picking off one pass to go along with five pass breakups and four tackles, according to MaxPreps.com. If he continues to play at this level, expect his rankings to see a hefty increase.

Because it is still extremely early in his recruitment, home-state schools Florida and Florida State have to be seen as the favorites to land Dixon; however, South Carolina will likely remain a contender, as the school offered him in the spring of his freshman season, giving them a great head start at building a relationship with him.

Ohio State, though, is still jumping into Dixon’s recruitment early in the game and if the program continues to recruit him, it will likely remain a legitimate contender to earn his commitment.

Ohio State offers elite 2019 DE

With limited space in Ohio State’s top ranked 2018 recruiting class, Urban Meyer and the Buckeye coaching staff are beginning to focus on next year's class. The Buckeyes have just one commitment for 2019 in four-star OT Doug Nester (Huntington, WV/Spring Valley) and the staff is hoping to add to that after offering an elite talent yesterday.

Four-star defensive end Savion Jackson (Clayton, NC/Clayton) took to Twitter late Monday night to announce that he had received a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes.

Blessed to receive my 15th offer from The University of Ohio State ⚪#Gobucks #OhioStatefb pic.twitter.com/VbvqmVTUyL

— Savion (@savionjac11) September 19, 2017

Jackson is one of the top recruits in the country, ranked as the No. 5 SDE in his class and the No. 50 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

With the accolades comes competition for the Buckeyes. Jackson has already earned a reported 15 scholarship offers from the likes of Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Penn State, and more.

It is early in Jackson’s recruitment and he has only taken two unofficial visits to date. He visited South Carolina for its Junior Day and was in attendance for Penn State’s spring game.

Ohio State will likely look to get Jackson on campus multiple times in the next two years if they are truly interested in him. With the team's recent success at producing NFL picks at the position, they will likely have a real shot in his recruitment.

LGHL Ohio State’s offense is (slowly) getting back on track

Ohio State’s offense is (slowly) getting back on track

usa_today_10284167.0.jpg

They got back to basics Saturday. Now we’ll see if the Buckeyes can build on it.

“We got back to what Ohio State’s offense is: Playing fast, getting the ball in space and making plays.”

-Ohio State receiver Parris Campbell, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

J.T. Barrett’s success in downfield passing against Army did not do much to quell naysayers disappointed in a lack of vertical passing. In several cases, he was inaccurate, and he often relied on short, quick tosses rather than waiting for the long throw. Despite finishing with a QBR of 88.3, completing 25 of 33 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns (with no picks), Barrett’s longest completion was for just 31 yards to tight end Marcus Baugh in the third quarter. These factors beg the question: Can the offense be successful when it comes to the vertical passing game?

The fact is that the offense was exposed against Oklahoma. The more the unit forced the downfield threat, the less successful it became as it shifted from a balanced run-pass attack to a pass-heavy game plan. The Buckeyes’ natural success is in the run game. With freshman J.K. Dobbins and sophomore Mike Weber at tailback, and Barrett running the option, the threat on the ground is hard to contain for many opposing defenses. Building from the run game, Barrett has always found success with short passes, often because he has not had the personnel to go downfield to. On Saturday, 15 of Barrett’s 25 completion were at or behind the line of scrimmage. Eventually, in tandem, success in these areas helps to open up the rest of the field, keeping opposing defenses on their toes.

There is no doubt that the Buckeyes need to work on their downfield passing, but key to success is remembering where the offense’s strengths lie, and that begins on the ground. Against Oklahoma, the Buckeyes relied too heavily on an area that was not their strength, and abandoned their bread-and-butter on offense. Those high-flying components on offense will come eventually, but Ohio State has a few weeks to work out the kinks before facing tough competition.

“I think the ceiling is higher for the Ohio State offense with Dwayne Haskins or Joe Burrow at the controls, but the floor is lower, too. Which one is more preferable?”

-Marcus Hartman, Dayton Daily News

Despite Ohio State’s win over Army Saturday, it was a rough weekend overall for football in Ohio, especially for quarterbacks. As Cincinnati and Cleveland both fell to 0-2 on the young NFL season, Andy Dalton and DeShone Kizer faced criticism and questions surrounding their role in the team’s failings. Dalton, the seasoned veteran, was outplayed by rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson, who had his first NFL start for the Texans. Kizer, meanwhile, was sidelined in his second start for Cleveland with a migraine, but still managed to throw three picks and a fumble in the direction of the Ravens.

J.T. Barrett, by comparison, had a great weekend, as he led the Buckeyes to a decisive win over Army in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The senior quarterback passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one more as he led what turned out to be a much more balanced attack than fans saw against Oklahoma last week. Still, questions remain as to whether Barrett has peaked, and if his performances against Oklahoma this season and Clemson last year are representative of what will happen when he is at the helm against the highest competition. Urban Meyer has not wavered in his loyalty to the fifth-year senior, and the offense, under Kevin Wilson, needs to adjust accordingly to Barrett’s skillset.

Freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins was 4-for-4 for 46 yards when he came in the game for the final 10 offensive snaps Saturday, with Ohio State well in control against Army. While he may be the quarterback of the future after this season, many are looking for him to play a bigger role now. Haskins certainly has a lot of potential, but the fact remains that Barrett has an extremely high ceiling--even if he has already reached it--and it will be a challenge for any newcomer to be able to match that level of success.

“The biggest change came on defense, where the Buckeyes lined up in a 4-2-5 formation with three safeties on the field for all but their final defensive series of Saturday’s game.”

-Dan Hope, Eleven Warriors

The Ohio State defense looked a lot different Saturday than it has so far this season, due to injuries on the Buckeyes’ side and Army’s triple-option offense. After imposing a domineering “Rushmen” package the first two games of the season with five defensive linemen on the field, the Buckeyes pulled back against the Black Knights to load up on safeties. This new lineup also meant that senior defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle, who missed most of the 2016 season due to injury, got his first start of 2017.

Senior safety Erick Smith was the main change in this new arrangement. He played the previous two games as the third safety in the Buckeyes’ rotation, but totalled 66 defensive snaps--a team high--against Army as one of three safeties on the field. Smith also continued his role on special teams on the kickoff unit. Fellow safeties Damon Webb and Jordan Fuller each played 62 defensive snaps leading up to the final defensive series of the game.

At linebacker, freshman Tuf Borland got his first defensive snaps as a Buckeye after Chris Worley left the game with a foot injury. He finished the game with 41 snaps, which was second on the unit behind Jerome Baker’s 60. Dante Booker came in for cleanup duty later in the game, relieving Baker for the final six defensive plays.

On the offensive side of the ball, seven different wide receivers saw action on offense, led by redshirt junior Terry McLaurin, who got into the game after an injury to Johnnie Dixon. True freshman Trevon Grimes also saw his first action as a Buckeye, getting in for 14 plays at wide out. Six other players saw the field for the first time at Ohio State Saturday, including freshman quarterback Dwayne Haskins, and a season-high 66 players got at least one snap.

Wrestling at Ohio State has become a family affair, as Rocky Jordan, the youngest brother of Buckeye wrestlers Bo and Micah Jordan, has committed to Ohio State. Rocky is ranked as the No. 12 recruit in the 170-pound weight class, and is No. 52 in the nation overall among high school seniors. He is already a two-time Ohio state champion as he enters his senior season.

Bo himself was a four-time champion at the state level in high school, amassing a 182-1 overall record before moving on to Ohio State. During his time in Columbus, Bo was a three-time All-American and one-time NCAA finalist in 2017. He was also part of Ohio State’s 2015 national championship team. Heading into his redshirt senior season, Bo is ranked second nationally in the 174-pound weight class.

Micah, meanwhile, was an All-American and Big Ten finalist last season. Entering his redshirt junior season, Micah is the No. 4 wrestler at the 149-pound weight class. Both brothers have also been named Academic All-Big Ten during their time at Ohio State.

The trio’s father, Jeff, was a wrestler at Wisconsin, and coached the boys at St. Paris Graham High School in Ohio. Their uncle, Jim, was a two-time national champion at Wisconsin, and their cousin, Isaac, was a two-time conference champion for the Badgers (Bo lost to Isaac in the Big Ten finals in 2015).

Two electrifying performances this season has Dobbins on the Heisman odds board.

With Week 3 of college football in the books, the sportsbooks have issued new odds going into the fourth week of the season. Bovada, one of the more popular online sportsbook, released their updated odds—and, again, the Ohio State Buckeyes lost ground.

Entering the Army West Point contest, Urban Meyer’s squad carried odds that hovered around 8/1. Even though the Buckeyes defeated the Black Knights convincingly, 38-7, the oddsmaker pushed OSU back slightly to 17/2 odds of winning the title.

Good news, though, for the Scarlet and Gray: freshman running back J.K. Dobbins has now shown up on the Heisman odds list for the first time this season. Dobbins has the 12th best odds right now, sitting as a 40/1 longshot.

While Dobbins continues to shine, the Buckeyes have some ground to make up against other college football powers. Leading the national championship odds table are the defending runner-ups, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Nick Saban’s crew holds 2/1 odds to win it all. Right behind the Tide is the team that defeated them in last season’s College Football Playoff National Championship, the Clemson Tigers.

After a blowout win against Louisville on the road, the Tigers saw one of the bigger leaps in the odds this week. Dabo Swinney’s program had 14/1 odds before playing the Cardinals; now, those odds are at 11/2.

Below is a table of the top 10 teams with the best odds. (Remember: odds are fluid, meaning, they can fluctuate at any given time. These odds were gathered at 2:50 p.m. ET on Sept. 18).

On the Heisman odds, Louisville’s quarterback Lamar Jackson no longer holds the top spot. That belongs to the Oklahoma Sooners’ QB Baker Mayfield. Mayfield currently holds 7/4 odds of taking home the Heisman Trophy.

J.T. Barrett, who began the season with odds around 10/1, now has slid all the way to 33/1. Before playing Army, Barrett had Heisman odds at 25/1. After running for a touchdown and throwing for two more against the Black Knights, the three-time OSU captain passed Drew Brees’ on the Big Ten conference list for most TDs responsible for.

Ohio State has already played two night games this season, winning at Indiana, and losing at home to Oklahoma. They aren’t currently scheduled to play in another one, but there’s plenty of time for that to change, as four of their conference games do not currently have a time set.

If you’re worried about what other game you may be missing while you’re watching Ohio State, that isn’t clear yet either, as most of Week 5’s TV schedule hasn’t been finalized. Right now, it’s just a bunch of Sun Belt and Conference USA games, and we’re assuming you won’t be too upset over not being able to watch Florida International that night.

Rutgers is currently 1-2, with losses to Washington and Eastern Michigan.
