LGHL J.T. Barrett still hasn’t shown what he can do as a downfield passer

Even with all of the emphasis this off-season, the senior QB attempted just three long passes Thursday.

“We made such an emphasis on the deep ball that it’s somewhat disappointing that we didn’t hit a couple of them.”

-Urban Meyer, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

On paper, J.T. Barrett had a highly-successful game versus the Indiana Hoosiers, especially considering the fact he was breaking in new receivers on the road in the team’s opener. Barrett finished the game Thursday with 20 completions on 35 attempts for 304 yards, three touchdowns and no picks. He also rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown in the Buckeyes’ 49-21 win. Still, what remains somewhat disturbing given all of the offseason hype is the fact that Barrett never managed to complete a long pass. Even more disconcerting, Barrett attempted just three such passes. One, targeted to tight end Marcus Baugh, was overthrown. The other two, however, showed that Barrett is actually capable of completing such passes. Wide receiver Parris Campbell dropped a touchdown pass in the endzone; the final pass, an attempt to WR Binjimen Victor, drew a pass interference penalty which, while not padding Barrett’s stats, kept the offense moving downfield.

Urban Meyer acknowledged that it was disappointing that there were no deep balls caught in the game. Given the troubles last year in making the big play, the need for a vertical passing game was a key driver in bringing Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day onto the staff in the offseason. With so few attempts in this first outing after all of these changes, fans are left to wonder if the root cause is a lack of confidence in Barrett, failure of the receivers to get open in space or a desire by Wilson to limit downfield passes.

The latter option may be one of the most viable. Barrett was able to effectively pick apart the Indiana defense from close range. Especially as freshman running back J.K. Dobbins managed to effectively run through the defense, Indiana was on their heels for many of these short-yardage plays.

“The Ohio State sophomore defensive end has grown accustom to the speed of the college game, gotten stronger and added moves to his arsenal--a breakout season, he felt, was coming.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

It came as no surprise that the Ohio State defensive line was more than stellar in their opener against Indiana Thursday, carrying the rest of the defensive units as they got up to speed. The Buckeyes even showed from the start what Ohio State fans have been dreaming of all offseason, lining up in a five-man defensive front in their first play on defense. What is perhaps more surprising on the loaded line is that sophomore defensive end Nick Bosa played more snaps than any of the other noted players on the line, including Tyquan Lewis, Sam Hubbard and Jalyn Holmes.

While his stat line is not that impressive in itself (he did record a sack in the first half), Bosa was quick off the edge in his snaps, forcing Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow to get off quick throws throughout the game and often allowing one of the other linemen to make a play. That sort of pressure, even if it did not result in a sack, altered Indiana’s gameplan on offense, and is a strength to the defensive line as a whole.

Last season, Bosa tended to play more inside the line as part of the Buckeyes’ “Rushmen” package, which was used for 17 snaps Thursday. This season, however, it is likely that he will line up on the edge more often, as he did Thursday. Even so, he still demonstrated his ability to stuff the run up the middle in his season debut.

One of the benefits of having such a loaded defense is that players can rotate and play fewer snaps in a given game, reducing fatigue and allowing for more explosive plays against a progressively more worn-down offensive line. Thursday, a total of 12 defensive linemen saw the field, with snap counts ranging from six to Bosa’s 62. This group was used in 24 different arrangements.

“ESPN GameDay has been good to Ohio State. The Buckeyes hold a 26-12 record in games played following a GameDay appearance, and are 11-4 in those games played in Columbus.”

-Jason Priestas, Eleven Warriors

For the second week in a row, ESPN’s College GameDay will be on-site for an Ohio State game. While it was a crazy opening weekend for the pre-game show, which traveled from Bloomington on Thursday to Atlanta on Saturday ahead of the Alabama-Florida State game, the crew will settle into its usual schedule of one site per week starting this weekend.

Columbus has been a favorite spot to host the show, with Lee Corso and team visiting Ohio State a whopping 15 times. With this weekend’s scheduled appearance added to the mix, that number is tied (technically) with Alabama, who played three of their games off-campus in Birmingham. This weekend will also mark the fourth-straight time that the Buckeyes have had GameDay on-site for their matchups, dating back to last season’s final two games against Michigan and Clemson.

Of course, it makes sense that the show would visit the Buckeyes so often. Since GameDay began touring campuses in 1993, Ohio State has been one of the winningest programs in college football, and they have won more games than anyone over the last two decades. Especially as Urban Meyer joined the program, the Buckeyes gained additional prestige, producing monster numbers of draft picks each year who simply have to be watched in person before they head to the NFL. Still, GameDay didn’t cover an Ohio State game until 1996, when they had three matchups in five weeks (at No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 3 Penn State at home, and at No. 20 Iowa). The Buckeyes won all three games during that stretch, finishing ranked second nationally. And the matchup against Penn State marked that historic moment when, for the first time, Corso donned headgear to declare his pick for the game. He chose Brutus, and he chose wisely.

Overall, Corso is 20-10 when picking Brutus.

One big win down, a second-straight test awaits the Buckeyes on Saturday.

Following the team’s Week 1 victory over Indiana, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer met with the media on Labor Day to look forward at this Saturday’s rematch against No. 7 Oklahoma.

Despite a slow start in Bloomington, Ind., the Buckeyes rebounded in the second half and ran away with the game, winning 49-21. For their efforts, quarterback J.T. Barrett won his seventh Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award, sharing it with Penn State’s Saquon Barkley. Also, running back J.K. Dobbins was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week.

Champions of the Game

Champions: Jalyn Holmes, Nick Bosa, Sam Hubbard, Dre’Mont Jones, Tracy Sprinkle, Jordan Fuller

Champions: J.T. Barrett, K.J. Hill, Johnnie Dixon, all five offensive linemen (Jamarco Jones, Michael Jordan, Billy Price, Brandon Bowen, Isaiah Prince)

  • Special Teams Player of the Game: Amir Riep

Champions: Austin Mack, Drue Chrisman

Indiana Recap

  • Meyer said that while he was disappointed in certain areas, which isn’t uncommon for the first game, he was pleased with how they tightened up in the second half.
  • With 300 yards both passing and rushing, Meyer was pleased with his team’s offensive balance.
  • Meyer mentioned that Barrett had a “very good day” against IU, and that many of the issues in the passing game came from poor timing with the WRs. Meyer said “[Barrett’s] a very accurate passer.” The coach added that the team’s goal was to be at 60 percent accuracy on balls thrown down the field.
  • The Indiana wide receivers humbled the Ohio State secondary, but playing on Thursday gave them a couple of extra days to recoup, since many of them were on the field for around 90 plays.
  • Meyer said that the OSU defense played an inordinate amount of plays, and they might not have been able to win against Indiana had the coaching staff not been able to rotate as many defensive lineman in as they did.
  • Meyer noted that Hoosier quarterback Richard Lagow threw one of the most accurate balls that he has ever seen, and that the OSU secondary would need to play better against Oklahoma to win.
Injury Updates

  • Meyer said that running back Mike Weber, who did not play due to injury against Indiana, went full speed in practice on Monday, and will play on Saturday. However, he has yet to determine how the RB rotation would work between Weber and Dobbins against Oklahoma.
  • Following the news of Eric Glover-Williams leaving the team over the weekend, Meyer confirmed that it was because of a “school conduct issue.”
Oklahoma Preview

  • The head coach said that he has a tremendous amount of respect for the Sooners’ personnel.
  • Meyer said that it’s not especially difficult to gameplan against a new head coach like Lincoln Riley, because he knows that he will maintain much of what Bob Stoops had established in Norman, including having last year’s coordinators still on staff.
  • He added that he had looked into Riley as a potential assistant coach earlier in his career.
  • Meyer said that he had spoken with Stoops a number of times since he announced his retirement, and that he was very happy for Stoops.
Recruiting

  • Meyer said that he follows the recruiting and eventual careers of players that they don’t take, especially when they are from Ohio. He said that he would love to take an entire team from Ohio, but they also have to take the best players available.
  • The head coach also admitted that they had missed on a handful of players over the years.
  • Meyer said that when he was recruiting Dobbins out of La Grange, Texas, J.K. “was ready to commit the moment we said hello to him.”

No. 2 Ohio State will face off against No. 7 Oklahoma this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. ESPN’s “College Gameday” will also be on site to cover the second-straight Buckeye game to open the season. .

Despite a rocky first half, the pair proved there is plenty to be excited about this season.

Following Ohio State’s season opening 49-21 win on the road in Bloomington, Ind., two Buckeyes were honored with Big Ten weekly awards: quarterback J.T. Barrett and running back J.K. Dobbins.

First, Barrett shared the Week 1 Offensive Player of the Week award with Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. After a slow first half for the Buckeyes, Barrett finished the first game accounting for 365 total yards (including 304 through the air) and four touchdowns (three passing).

The award was Barrett’s seventh Offensive Player of the Week award, the fourth-most in conference history. Barkley had 246 all-purpose yards (172 rushing, 54 receiving, 20 on kick returns).

Next, Dobbins was honored in his first collegiate game after setting an Ohio State record for rushing yards by a freshman with 181 on 29 carries, breaking the previous mark held by Maurice Clarett. Dobbins joined Clarett as the only two OSU true-freshmen to start at running back.

The La Grange, TX-native averaged 6.2 yards per carry, and had two receptions for 24 yards. The last Buckeye to win the Freshman of the Week honor was Mike Weber on Nov. 21, 2016. Weber did not play against Indiana due to an ongoing hamstring injury.

No. 2 Ohio State will next take to the field on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC against No. 7 Oklahoma in a rematch of last year’s game in Norman, Okla. ESPN’s “College Gameday” will be on hand for the second Buckeye game in a row this season.

The Buckeyes played host to one of the top juniors in the state over the weekend.

After losing out on one time verbal pledge Torrence Watson, who decommitted from the Buckeyes in August, Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball program are still trying to secure 2018 prospects. But that doesn’t mean the staff isn’t keeping a close eye on talented recruits from the class of 2019.

On Saturday, while most were kicking back and relaxing during the long weekend, Holtmann and crew played host to one of the top junior recruits in the state.

Making the trek to Columbus from the Cleveland area, Alonzo Gaffney unofficially visited Ohio State to get more familiar with the Buckeyes.

— Sonny Johnson (@sonnyjohnson32) September 2, 2017

Coming off a huge AAU season, Gaffney has locked in numerous scholarships from a long list of solid programs. Like Ohio State, coaches from Louisville, Florida, Kansas, Iowa, and Georgetown have all recently thrown their hats in the ring for the four-star power forward.

An All-Ohio selection after averaging nearly 13 points a contest last season as a sophomore at Villa Angela St. Joseph, the 6’9, 190-pounder is now suiting up for head coach Sonny Johnson and Garfield Heights.

Ayala sets up visits

After flirting with reclassifying to the 2017 class, 2018 combo guard Eric Ayala is ready to take his official recruiting visits.

Now at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, the Delaware native will reportedly take trips to Miami, Oregon, Ohio State, Syracuse, and Maryland in the coming weeks.

Eric Ayala Official visits:

Miami: (9/22-9/24)
Oregon: (9/29-10/1)
Ohio St: (10/6-10/8)
Syracuse: (10/13-10/15)
Maryland: (10/20-10/22)

— Pat Lawless (@PatLawless_) September 1, 2017

One of the most sought-after prospects on the high school level, Ayala is currently considered the sixth combo guard and 77th overall prospect in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Quick Hits

  • As first reported by Woody Wommack, Ohio State has reportedly offered 2019 safety Joseph Charleston of Milton High School in Alpharetta, GA. The four-star rated Charleston also holds opportunities to attend schools such as Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and Tennessee.
  • Per Rivals, Ohio State, Penn State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Clemson are the top contenders for class of 2019 running back Devyn Ford. A four-star prospect from Stafford, VA, Ford plans to visit OSU for their matchup with Penn State next month.
