CFB Weekly Thread 2017 Week 1 CFB Open Thread

Stop me if you've heard this before but Florida and Tennessee are both still ranked because, well..... SEC
Tennessee I'll give a pass because at least they won and facing triple option fuckery your first time out is no joke. Florida should be nowhere near the top 25 until they actually field an offense slightly better than a Sun Belt team. Actually that might be an insult to Sun Belt teams.

A passing game in its infancy meets four-year starter Jordan Thomas.

Few players are as important to their team as Oklahoma cornerback Jordan Thomas.

A four-year starter, Thomas snagged two interceptions to go along with his 17 pass breakups – third most in school history – last season. His 49 tackles were good for a career-high and he could surpass that personal best in 2017.

When the two-time, All-Big 12 corner is locked in, he can lockdown any receiver in the country. Oklahoma’s coverage on defense is literally predicated on Thomas completely eliminating one side of the field.

The difference between the Sooners winning a third consecutive conference title and returning to the College Football Playoff partly rests on Thomas’ shoulders.

Just don’t actually tell him that. He’d say the exact opposite, which he did, per CNHI Sports Oklahoma.

“I want to put us out there against anyone,” Thomas said. “I’ll put us out there against the best in the country just to see what we’re capable of, because I feel like we have made a lot of improvements and believe that we have done a lot of the little things right to put us in a position. So, once it comes to field time, everything is just gonna translate.”

Referring back to what I said earlier, the 6-foot-0, 185-pound Thomas is not only capable of taking away an offense’s top receiving target, but can eliminate an entire side of the field.

Sooner wideout Jeffery Mead praised Thomas during training camp for his ability to play the ball and read receivers.

“As camp went on, it got better,” Mead said. “Jordan Thomas, I think he’s an amazing corner. He plays the ball very well and he comes out of my cuts before I come out of them half the time. It makes me mad, infuriates me. But he’s good at what he does.”

After tossing UTEP aside 56-7 in their season-opener, Oklahoma will soon arrive in Columbus to square off with OSU under the lights. In his final go-round as a Sooner, Thomas is going to want to make this one count, so keep an eye on him throughout the night.

If he’s indeed locked in and is blanketing a whole side of the field, it’ll make life exceedingly difficult for a Buckeye passing game that has never been able to duplicate their performance against Oklahoma in 2016.

It’s up to Thomas to ensure it stays that way, a harsh reality for OSU.

The No. 1 OT will be visiting one of the biggest games the Buckeyes play this season.

As we reach Wednesday, we are now just a few more days away until the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes tackle the No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners inside The Horseshoe for a 7:30 p.m. battle of top-five ranked teams.

Already, Urban Meyer has held his weekly press conference, and insights were disseminated. But as the student-athletes and coaches prepare for the game, there is another battle to be won: recruiting. A bevy of talent will be descending upon Columbus, Ohio this weekend, including the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2019 class.

A game with top schools brings top talent

Five-star OT Devontae Dobbs (Belleville, MI/Belleville) has been a target of the Ohio State recruiting efforts. The 2019 prospect went to the Friday Night Lights camp hosted by OSU back in July, and the Buckeyes have been in a battle with the Michigan Wolverines for the prospect.

In an article written by Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts, Dobbs confirmed that he will be at the game on Saturday. For the Buckeyes, this is very big news. Meyer’s squad gets the first chance this season to talk with the No. 1 prospect from Michigan, and can make inroads at one of the biggest games of the college football season.

Those inroads couldn’t come soon enough, as the 247sports Crystal Ball tracker has three predictions that Dobbs will go to the Buckeyes, and three predictions that have Dobbs going to the Wolverines. However, the last three predictions that were filed all went to Jim Harbaugh’s program.

While there is plenty of time until National Signing Day 2019, the impressions made now can be the difference maker. So far, 26 offers have come in for Dobbs. Programs like Alabama and Clemson, the last two national champions, have already made offers to Dobbs.

The competition is there, but the Buckeyes get the early advantage by getting Dobbs on campus for a major non-conference contest. Whichever program gets the commitment from Dobbs is picking up an absolute star-of-tomorrow. The Belleville, Mich., native is the No. 8 prospect in the whole 2019 class—and is the top prospect at his position, and in the state.

Once the visit concludes, we’ll have you covered on any updates surrounding Dobbs and the Buckeyes.

The Eyes of Texas

Also visiting this weekend for the OSU-OU game is five-star cornerback Anthony Cook. Cook is a Houston native, and is making his commitment on Oct. 30; right now, the three schools that are vying for the CB are Ohio State, Texas, and LSU.

Even though the three schools are college football powers, 13-of-15 predictions in the 247sports Crystal Ball have Cook going to the Buckeyes. Nothing is set in stone, but it’s reassuring for a Buckeye fan to know that a lot of the recruiting followers have Cook to Columbus.

Once again, Meyer and his coaches have a big opportunity to sell the program to another five-star prospect in person this Saturday night.

The Buckeyes have the second best odds to win the whole enchilada.

With all the Week 1 games now in the books, the focus shifts to Week 2. Going into the second true week of the college football season, the sportsbook Bovada has issued their new odds on who they think will end the season holding the national championship in Atlanta, as well as updated odds on who they think will take home the Heisman Trophy.

Ohio State carries the second best odds for the college football world at 6/1. Last week, the Buckeyes’ odds were 13/2—which simplified down is 6.5/1. If Urban Meyer’s squad can get past the Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday, then expect the Buckeyes to have even better odds for the second consecutive week.

Alabama still holds the best odds to win it all, but their odds have become slightly longer. In the last set of Bovada listings on Aug. 31, the Crimson Tide registered a 12/5 chance of winning the title; those odds are now 13/5 after their win against Florida State inside the new Mercedes Benz Stadium—which happens to be the site of the College Football Playoff National Championship this season.

The third best odds belong to USC. Like ‘Bama, the Trojans took a small slide on their national title odds after Week 1, going from 6/1 (Aug.31) to 7/1 (Sept.5). Additionally, quarterback Sam Darnold took a hit to his Heisman odds after the reigning Rose Bowl champions struggled mightily with Western Michigan in their own backyard.

Below are the top 10 teams with the best national championship odds, according to Bovada.

On the Heisman circuit, Darnold was the leader last week with 9/2 odds to take home the trophy. Now, his odds are 6/1, and that makes him second on the list. Defending Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson of Louisville has slingshotted up the odds table, and has the best odds going into Week 2 at 4/1.

J.T. Barrett slid to eighth on the list, and carries 14/1 odds this week. Sooners’ QB Baker Mayfield has the third best odds at 7/1—maintaining the same odds from last week. A good hypothesis: The winning QB from the Ohio State-Oklahoma contest will more than likely see their Heisman odds move up heading into Week 3.

UCLA Bruins QB Josh Rosen had one of the larger rises of the week after leading the Bruins to a victory against Texas A&M, 45-44, after trailing 44-10 late in the third quarter. Rosen was a 25/1 longshot before the season started, and now has 8/1 odds going into Week 2.

Seminoles’ QB Deondre Francois, who suffered a season-ending knee injury late in the game against the Crimson Tide, had 18/1 odds last week. Now, due to the injury, he is off the board. Additionally, Texas Longhorns QB Shane Buechele is off the board, too. Before the Longhorns’ home loss to unranked Maryland, 51-41, Buechele had 50/1 odds of being a Heisman winner.

Below is a table of the top 10 odds for who will walk away with the Heisman Trophy, according to Bovada.

LGHL Ohio State’s Tate Martell could be secret weapon in beating Oklahoma

Ohio State’s Tate Martell could be secret weapon in beating Oklahoma

While he may not play on Saturday night, Martell is still having an impact leading up to the game.

“You want to tackle them so bad, and they take advantage of it. I don't know how they do it. I remember one time I tackled Tate, and he spun out of it it.”

- Jalyn Holmes via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

J.T. Barrett is the starting quarterback at Ohio State and, barring injury, it will stay that way for the rest of the season. But that doesn’t mean backup quarterbacks can’t have an impact on a team’s success, especially this week when the Buckeyes prepare to face off against the Oklahoma Sooners. Baker Mayfield, the star quarterback for the Sooners, is quite the creator on offense and as he goes, so does Oklahoma. To help replicate his creativeness, the Buckeyes have put the ball in freshman quarterback Tate Martell’s hands for the Ohio State defense to practice against. It’s a common tactic used by college football teams to try and emulate an opposing quarterback with a player of similar traits and it’s fair to say that Mayfield and Martell share similar playstyles.

Martell’s knack for making plays with his legs should help the Buckeyes prepare for Mayfield yet again after taking care of business in Norman, Okla., last season. This time around, though, the defensive secondary is much more green. With Malik Hooker, Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley all moving on to the NFL, we saw the early struggles from Kendall Sheffield, Denzel Ward & co. had against Indiana on Thursday. But with the help of Martell, the defense will have plenty of time to prepare for the No. 6 team in the land.

“With him saying that, I don't know, everybody has their opinion. But I think I'm an accurate quarterback. I think I displayed that on Thursday. And (I'm) just trying to get better in that aspect.”

- J.T. Barrett via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Indiana head coach Tom Allen made an interesting comment about Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett following Thursday’s game. The Hoosiers for much of the game dropped eight men into coverage fearing the wide receivers’ speed, and dared Barrett to make plays with his arm. It’s not the first time a team has done this against the Buckeyes, but it was the first time a coach has blatantly come out and suggested that the strategy was because he doesn’t view Barrett as an accurate quarterback. While his comments weren’t all that misplaced, it was still surprising to see a coach speak so bluntly about an opposing player.

Barrett, meanwhile, disagrees as does his head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer did cite some previous struggles Barrett had with his accuracy but pointed to the fact that he’s much improved. Not to mention that often times the wide receivers are dropping passes that are right on the money when thrown. Barrett has dealt with criticism nonstop since the 2015 season, but he’s handled it well. Saturday night against Oklahoma will continue to help his cause (and prove the doubters wrong) if things go the Buckeyes’ way.

“You talk about Larry Johnson and Tyquan Lewis, you can't get better than that. You can't say this is a better combination of coach and player. They work their tails off, and they're so close. They're fun to watch.”

- Urban Meyer via Doug Lesmerises, Cleveland.com

Doug Lesmerises of Cleveland.com did a great piece of the relationship between Ohio State defensive end Tyquan Lewis and his defensive line coach Larry Johnson. The article mentions how these two share a similar mindset and attitude about things and how both sort of needed each other when they came to Ohio State. Johnson became the defensive line coach when Lewis was just a redshirt freshman who hadn’t seen any playing time. Now, Lewis is a consistent top performer on defense garnering national attention and multiple awards both nationally and within the Big Ten conference.

Johnson, of course, had coached at Penn State for quite some time and thought he might be done with it after his tenure had ended with the Nittany Lions. But thanks to some of his family, he was convinced to keep going and has now seen Lewis, Sam Hubbard, and more grow up under his watch and coaching.

The Sooners' D has some question marks, but the Buckeyes' shakiest unit will need to straighten out to beat them.

You can forgive Ohio State for starting Week 1 a little flat. A Thursday game, a conference opponent, a new offensive coordinator—all possible ingredients in an uninspired start to the preseason No. 2 team in college football.

But Week 1 is behind us, and we've gotten a taste of the kind of haymakers that college football's other premier teams can throw. The Buckeyes have to face one of those heavyweights, Oklahoma, this Saturday in Columbus.

The guy who might make all the difference in this bout? Week 1's first half goat and second half hero.

The stats

Name: Parris Campbell

Number: 21

Position: H-back

Year: Junior

Height/Weight: 6'1, 208 lbs.

Stat line: 6 receptions, 136 yards, 1 TD

Campbell had a dismal first half against Indiana on Thursday night, letting a first down ball bounce off his hands early before dropping one of the prettiest throws of J.T. Barrett's career in the end zone. It's safe to say he made up for it in the game's final 30 minutes. The highlight play, one which vaulted the Buckeyes into the lead for good, was a 74-yard scamper for six after a short throw from Barrett; Campbell left a slew of Hoosier defenders looking like they were moving in slow motion on that run.

Opposition research

The Sooners' defense features a number of key contributors from last year's unit, including some stout linemen in Neville Gallimore and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, and experienced safeties Steven Parker and Will Johnson. Standout corner Jordan Thomas also returns. The issue for Oklahoma is that last year's defense just wasn't all that impressive, finishing out 2016 as the No. 55 defense by S&P+. That won't be good enough to hang with Ohio State if the Buckeyes start firing on all cylinders like they did in the second half last week.

Last weekend, the Sooners steamrolled an overmatched UTEP team to the tune of 56-7. That beatdown belied an almost boring performance by Oklahoma's defense—they stifled the Miners, allowing just 167 total yards, but got just one sack and no interceptions for their trouble. (In fairness, they did record four tackles for loss and force a fumble in the open field.)

What to watch for

Given the above, and the fact that Oklahoma's defense recorded just 17 takeaways all last season, there's a clear opportunity for the Buckeyes to exploit their matchups in the passing game here.

Enter Parris Campbell. The junior H-back is stepping into a regular contributing role this season for the first time in his Buckeye career after being mostly relegated to punt/kick duty in 2016. Thursday night's game was an excellent showcase for Campbell's weaknesses (hands) and his strengths (speed, cuts, vision); against Oklahoma, Urban Meyer and Kevin Wilson can scheme to emphasize the latter while minimizing the impact of the former.

To wit: Ohio State's two best pass plays against Indiana, one of which was Campbell's long score, share some similarities. On both, the receiver lines up on the right side and follows an inside route toward the left half of field. (Johnnie Dixon, loose behind the Hoosiers' linebackers, sits on the throw at the second level; Campbell's drag route takes him all the way across the field just beyond the line of scrimmage.) And on both, getting one of the Buckeyes' superior athletes into open space was enough to chew up more than half the field and get in for a touchdown.

We know by now that this set of Buckeye personnel with this particular quarterback rarely thrives when asked to connect on long pass plays and beat a defense deep before the ball arrives. Guys like Binjimen Victor and Austin Mack are built like prototypical NFL wideouts, but they're green enough that they've yet to find a rhythm with Barrett, who gets mighty shaky beyond 15 yards or so. They also probably want to avoid testing a player like Jordan Thomas, who could make Barrett pay on an under-thrown ball.

But against Oklahoma—a team that can throw the ball with the best of them, in a matchup that's likely to be a shootout—they shouldn't have to. The Buckeyes' small receiving corps' strength is tailor-made to exploit the weaknesses of a team like the Sooners, and the more Urban Meyer leans on it (along with a healthy dose of the stable of running backs at his disposal), Ohio State should be able to handle Baker Mayfield and Oklahoma.

With some game film to review, the Buckeyes’ depth chart looks a little different for the Sooners.

Ohio State had a lot of adjustments to make at halftime during the season-opener to Indiana -- both to personnel and scheme, but those changes completely turned around the momentum of the second half. Now, the Buckeyes are heading into their home-opener in prime-time (featured on ESPN’s College GameDay), against a team out for revenge, and the depth chart looks a little different.

Meyer already mentioned during his weekly press conference that running back Mike Weber was back to practicing at full speed following the IU game, and that Weber along with freshman sensation J.K. Dobbins would both get touches in Week 2 against Oklahoma. How those carries will be divided has yet to be determined -- and best wishes to the guy who has to make that call. For the time being though, they are both listed as first-team rushers.

Newcomers to the depth chart this week are freshman Pete Werner and sophomore Justin Hilliard to the linebacker position.

Not as many moves as expected after Week 1 of college football.

The Ohio State Buckeyes came away with their first Big Ten conference win against the Hoosiers last Thursday, but it wasn’t without some early struggles. After a first half that most fans would like to forget, the offense finally started rolling mid-way through the third quarter and the defense — notably, the secondary — finally found their swagger.

Preseason polls listed the Buckeyes at No. 2, and the team kept their spot heading into Week 2. Oklahoma came into the season as part of the top 10, and with a marked victory over UTEP in their season-opener, inched closer to the Buckeyes at No. 5 in the AP Poll.

It was a good weekend for most Big Ten teams, with Michigan boosting their stock (up to No. 8) after beating a Florida team that was missing 10 players, and Penn State (up to No. 4) putting on a clinic against the Akron Zips. And in other rival news, Clemson -- who was a big question mark with QB Deshaun Watson heading to the NFL -- bumped up a few spots to No. 3 after their victory over Kent State.

Florida State came into the 2017 season at No. 3, and didn’t look all that bad against the No. 1 Rolling Tide until their starting quarterback Deondre Francois went down with a season-ending knee injury.
