The 2018 defensive end will take in the Buckeyes' showdown with Oklahoma.

Oweh to take weekend official

Ohio State already has a loaded group of visitors for this weekend’s tilt against Oklahoma, who are hoping to get revenge from last year’s 45-24 dismantling in Norman courtesy of the Buckeyes. 2018 standouts like cornerback Anthony Cook, defensive end Micah Parsons, and defensive tackle Tommy Togiai are all expected on campus. But on Wednesday, they found out that another top tier prospect in the class will be joining them.

According to Jeremy Birmingham of Landof10.com, Ohio State will be hosting ‘18 DE Jayson Oweh of Blair Academy (NJ) for an official visit this weekend as well.

Oweh, an Under Armour All-American, seems to have focused on three schools: Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State. That means this weekend could be the Buckeyes' last opportunity to impress the 6'5, 236-pounder before he ultimately puts his recruitment to rest.

The Garden State standout has an upside through the roof and his rankings really don’t do justice for the type of player he can become at the next level. Oweh is currently a four-star prospect and he falls just outside of his class's Top 150. Despite that, he is still one of the best strong-side defensive ends in the class and a top-five player in the state of New Jersey -- a state where Ohio State has had some success in previous recruiting classes.

It will be interesting to see how things turn this weekend, because Ohio State has a few targets remaining amongst defensive end prospects. Oweh and Parsons are two options, and ‘18 DE Tyreke Smith of Cleveland Heights (OH) is another that the Buckeyes surely want in the class. It will be interesting to watch and see how this unfolds, but I have to believe that if all three want in, Ohio State would make it work—especially given that Smith has the frame to potentially move inside, if need be.

Commitment watch for Togiai?

As we mentioned above, Ohio State will have ‘18 DT Tommy Togiai of Highland (ID) in The ‘Shoe this Saturday for his official visit to the campus. All things considered, it may not be his last trip, because a commitment to the Buckeyes isn’t out of the question.

The 6'3, 290-pounder was most recently in Columbus during Ohio State’s annual Friday Night Lights event in July of this year, and all indications are that Togiai and the Buckeyes hit it off pretty well.

So despite the fact that as of Wednesday night Ohio State trails USC on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for the four-star interior lineman, a pledge to the Scarlet and Gray would not at all be surprising. It is worth mentioning that for the time being, the Pocatello native does have a visit to Washington set for October. But who knows, maybe Ohio State can do enough to impress him and have him wrap his recruitment up before that comes about. We will see what happens sooner rather than later, but for the Buckeyes’ sake, what could be better than a victory over the Sooners and another blue-chop haul on the recruiting trail?

The addition of Togiai would give defensive line coach Larry Johnson an incredible duo at defensive tackle. ‘18 DT Taron Vincent of IMG Academy (FL), who has been committed to Ohio State since April, is a five-star prospect and the best defensive tackle in the country. Combine that with Togiai, who is a Top 100 prospect and the seventh-best interior lineman in the class, and you have two that have the potential to cause problems in the Big Ten for years to come.

Also, what did Urban Meyer say his assistants need to work on after last season?

“This will be just the 14th time since the start of the 2012 season the Buckeyes have been a single-digit favorite, and they are 10-3 SU and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games as one.”

- OddsShark, SBNation

After the Buckeyes won on the road in Norman last year, it’s not a tremendous surprise that they are more than a touchdown favorite for this Saturday’s return-game in Columbus. Going into this weekend, OSU is a 7.5 point favorite, and the game’s over/under is 64.5.

While the Buckeyes’ secondary will be tested after Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield put up video game numbers in the season-opener against UTEP; he was 19 of 20 through the air for 329 yards and three touchdowns; OddsShark points out that history is on Ohio State’s side.

“Ohio State is 22-1 SU and 15-8 ATS in its last 23 September home games,” OddsShark wrote. That sole, straight-up loss, as every Buckeye fan knows, was the 2014 defeat at the hands of the Virginia Tech Hokies. Ohio State went undefeated from there en route to the first College Football Playoff championship.

With the o/u in the mid-60s for Saturday, it might be valuable to note that the Sooners were over in seven of their last eight road games. Meaning that with the Buckeyes coming off of a 49-point output against IU, and Oklahoma having put up 56 against UTEP, this is shaping up to be an explosive prime-time matchup.

Ward had five pass breakups and an interception in the boxscore. But did he play well or not? Should there be confidence or worry about the corner when it's time to face Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield?”

- Doug Lesmerises, cleveland.com

In an incredibly gif-tastic article, Lesmerises went back and examined all 18 times that Indiana quarterback Richard Lagow through at projected first-round cornerback Denzel Ward. Thanks to ESPN’s Megacast coverage, Lesmerises is able to include many looks at the All-22 footage, so you are able to watch the play, and Ward’s coverage, develop.

Of the 18 passes thrown his way, six were completed for 58 yards, and one earned Ward a pass interference call. Lesmerises correctly points out that for most of the game, Ward was on an island allowing his less experienced cornerback compatriots as much support as possible.

Unfortunately, the other CBs did not perform anywhere near as well as Ward did. Kendall Sheffield gave up seven completions on 13 targets for 105 yards, while Damon Arnette was thrown at nine times, including seven completions for 78 yards.

Ohio State’s non-Denzel Ward cornerbacks will need to do much better to keep Mayfield in check on Saturday.

“Despite reaching the College Football Playoff, Meyer received a ‘performance meets expectations’ when determining the competitive success of the program.”

- Colin Hass-Hill, The Lantern

The obvious take away from these reports is that they supply official confirmation that making it to the College Football Playoff every year is the expectation at Ohio State. However, what is most interesting is the things that head coach Urban Meyer most valued, and would like to see improvement on, from his assistants.

While he called defensive coordinator Greg Schiano the “best coach I’ve worked with,” he did have some constructive feedback for others on the defensive side of the ball. Meyer said that he would like defensive line coach Larry Johnson to to use his motivational ability more and to work on his game planning ability.

Meyer also said that he he valued cornerback and special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs’ loyalty, energy, and chemistry with staff as his best traits.

On offense, though Meyer gave wide-receiver coach Zach Smith high marks for recruiting, he would like to see the #Zone6 leader work on the WR corps’ behavior. He also wants to see more accountability and focus from the unit in the weight room and meeting room.

“Oklahoma’s upcoming game at Ohio State is one of the biggest regular season games in recent Sooner memory... but with quarterback Baker Mayfield leading the way, OU is in excellent hands.”

- Seth Oliveras, Crimson and Cream Machine

Look, this won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but for Oklahoma to win in Columbus this weekend, they will need to have a great game from Baker Mayfield. The problem is going to be that, despite OSU’s secondary woes against Indiana, if Schiano doesn’t have to worry about an effective running game from the Sooners, that will allow him to turn the Buckeyes’ ridiculous front four loose on the veteran quarterback.

If the rotation of Nick Bosa, Jalyn Holmes, Sam Hubbard, Dre’Mont Jones, Tyquan Lewis, and Tracy Sprinkle are able to pin their ears back in hopes of getting after Mayfield, it will make his ability to complete passes down the field difficult, no matter how suspect OSU’s inexperienced corners are.

So, while the Heisman-contender quarterback will certainly be important to OU’s success, what might be more impactful is if the Sooners are able to eek out enough of a running game to give Coach Johnson the slightest bit of hesitation when deciding to send his defensive line into the backfield.

LGHL Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson made an early impact against Indiana

Ohio State offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson made an early impact against Indiana

The new Buckeye offensive coordinator dialed up some quality plays in the passing attack.

It didn’t take long for new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson to put his fingerprints on the Ohio State offense. In the Week 1 matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers, we saw tempo, wheel routes, crossing patterns, wide receiver screens and more high percentage throws for J.T. Barrett. Although the first half looked more like the inconsistent 2016 offense, the receivers started to gain separation and Barrett started to hit his open receivers which resulted in some big plays.

Looking at the chart above, the offensive line did an excellent job keeping Barrett in a clean pocket and upright. On 37 dropbacks, I charted only four pressures, two hits and one sack on Barrett. The quarterback was under siege last year, and it looks like Isaiah Prince held his own against the Indiana front. Left tackle Jamarco Jones was credited with the only sack allowed on the night.

Wilson dialed up a shallow crosser for Parris Campbell early and it was very successful. As you can see below, Wilson catches Indiana in man coverage. Campbell is lined up in the slot on the right of the line of scrimmage, while Marcus Baugh (#85) is lined up in the left slot and Johnnie Dixon (#1) is lined up outwide to the left.

Campbell runs a three-yard crossing pattern, while Baugh basically runs a pick on Campbell’s man and Dixon picks a linebacker sitting in the middle of the field. These two picks open up Campbell for an easy, high percentage throw from Barrett.

crossing.jpg

The one concerning thing about Barrett’s day was once again his accuracy. Sure, his receivers didn’t help him in the first half by not gaining great separation, but he also overthrew his target six times. With his offensive line giving him a clean pocket for the majority of his throws and Wilson giving him quality throwing windows, Barrett needs to complete the tougher throws downfield (below) to take this offense to the next level.

overthrow.jpg

On the perimeter, Zone 6 had two key downfield blocks which sprung their teammates for long scores. On Campbell’s touchdown reception, Terry McLaurin had a great block that was in the difference in a 30-yard gain and a 74-yard score.

block.jpg

On Johnnie Dixon’s 59-yard score, Binjimen Victor also threw a key block on a corner, allowing Dixon to scamper to the end zone for the first time as a Buckeye.

victor.jpg

After struggling to block on the perimeter since the departure of Evan Spencer, it looks like Zach Smith’s group is back in a big way — both as pass-catchers and as blockers.

Overall, the offense had little wrinkles from Kevin Wilson that make the offense much tougher to defend in man-coverage and should return Barrett to his 2014 form. The offense is still a run-first, inside zone team, but the passing game will put Barrett in a better place to succeed, while they give their four- and five-star athletes space to make plays. J.K. Dobbins was excellent (that jump-cut?) in his first collegiate game, and the return of Mike Weber -- especially in short yardage — will make the running game even tougher to defend.

Look for the offense to continue where it left off next week against Oklahoma.
