Ohio State is in the mix, as are Nebraska and Penn State.

Halloween night brought us the tricks and treats. (*cues sitcom laugh track).

After taking down the then-No. 2 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, the Ohio State Buckeyes were slotted into the No. 6 spot in the first edition of this season’s College Football Playoff rankings. Georgia, Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame were the top four teams, respectively, and Oklahoma slipped into the No. 5 spot.

I guess you could call that a trick, as the Buckeyes seemed to be the team with the hot-hand at this point in this season—and opened up their playoff pursuit on the outside looking in.

While Saturdays are the days when Urban Meyer proves what his team can do, the recruiting trail perpetually moves on. Even on Halloween night, news broke.

The Wait Is Nearly Over

A little after the unveiling of the initial CFP rankings, a notable five-star recruit took to Twitter to announce his commitment date.

My commitment is December 20th all glory to god

— BLESSEDMVP (@Micah_parsons23) October 31, 2017

Weak-side defensive end Micah Parsons (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg) was the one to give us the treat we’ve been waiting for: his commitment date. The Buckeyes were seen as the frontrunner for the Keystone State standout, but things started to fizzle within the past couple months. Parsons attended the Friday Night Lights camp back in July, and even made an official visit to OSU in September; however, after the OU loss, things took a turn as he tweeted support for Dwayne Haskins over J.T. Barrett.

Since the college football season started, the 6'3, 235-pounder has made unofficial visits to Penn State and Nebraska. The latest of the those trips, which happened this past Saturday, was to Norman, OK to visit with the Sooners.

It’s been a wild ride in the Parsons recruitment process. In February 2016, he committed to the Nittany Lions football program. That commitment lasted over a year, before he decommitted a week after making a trip to Columbus in April 2017.

Either way, whoever Parsons commits to on Dec. 20 will be getting one of the best DEs in the 2018 class. According to the 247sports composite, he’s the No. 5 overall prospect in the class, and the best WDE and PA prospect. From a prediction standpoint, the 247sports Crystal Ball has 87 percent (20 of 23 votes) casted for Penn State being the program Parsons commits to.

We can speculate all we want, but we’ll get the verdict in mid-December.

An offer to another WDE

While Parsons is one of the focuses for the Buckeye coaching staff, they can’t limit their options.

Before the Pennsylvania star prospect tweeted about his commitment date, another star on the high school football circuit went to Twitter to talk about some big news.

Truly Honored To Receive An Offer From Ohio State #GoBucks ⚪pic.twitter.com/eWMf47R4qC

— Abdul-Malik McClain (@malikmcclain8_) October 31, 2017

Four-star WDE Abdul-Malik McClain (San Juan Capistrano, CA/J Serra Catholic) made his tweet about the OSU offer late Monday night. McClain currently stands as a top 300 player in the country, coming in at No. 270 on the 247sports composite. At his position, he’s the 15th-best in the 2018 class—and 34th-best in the state of California.

If the Buckeyes do end up getting McClain, they’ll need to do some serious work. Back in July, the California native elected to stay in the state for college football by committing to the UCLA Bruins. While not all commitments are set in stone, it’s hard to uproot someone from across the country.

Ohio State joined 14 others schools in offering McClain, a list that includes Oklahoma, USC, Notre Dame and Washington.

Do you think the Buckeyes’ position is fair?

Short of an unmitigated blowout, the Ohio State Buckeyes couldn’t have had a bigger statement game heading into the first week of this season’s College Football Playoff rankings. Off of the heart-stopping, come-from-behind victory over Penn State, the Buckeyes shot up to third in both the AP and Coaches Poll, but since we no longer live in the BCS era, those rankings don’t mean much when it comes to who will play for the national title.

On Halloween night, the College Football Playoff committee released their first rankings, and the Buckeyes found themselves ranked sixth, with Georgia grabbing the top spot. They were followed by fellow SEC power Alabama at No. 2. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish comes in third, with their only loss coming to No. 1 Georgia in a one-point game.

The senior quarterback has been in the race before, but has a chance to actually win it.

“He said ‘the H word,’ so I'm going to say the same thing, that H word. I don't really focus on it. Next week we've got to go beat Iowa. That's what I'll go focus on.”

- J.T. Barrett via Dan Murphy, ESPN

If there was ever a better time for J.T. Barrett to prove his worth as one of the best quarterbacks in Ohio State history, playing at home against an undefeated, second-ranked Penn State team was it. Barrett led the Buckeyes to a monstrous win, and now has Ohio State back in the thick of the College Football Playoff race. That’s not all Barrett’s performance accomplished, however. The senior quarterback has now thrust himself into the Heisman Trophy discussion and has a pretty decent chance of winning it, depending on how the rest of the season goes. Not bad for someone who was being called to be replaced by many Buckeye fans.

Against the Nittany Lions, Barrett went 33-of-39 passing for 328 yards, 95 rushing yards, and four touchdowns. He went 13-of-13 in the fourth quarter with his team down and found Johnnie Dixon twice and Marcus Baugh for the game winner. His performance was an all-time great and will likely be remembered for years to come. On the season, Barrett has thrown for 2,166 yards on 171-of-246 (good enough for 69.5 percent) and 25 touchdowns to just one interception. The Heisman is not out of reach, and the Buckeyes are still in the hunt for the playoffs, thanks to Barrett.

“I don't know. I'm not micromanaging that right now. I trust them both. (Dobbins) still had 88 yards and however many carries. We're throwing the ball so darn well right now, too. So once again, I don't micromanage. That's Kevin Wilson, and that's for Tony Alford to determine. They're both practicing very hard. You'd like to get them more carries.”

- Urban Meyer via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Despite everything working out at the end of the Penn State game, there were some questions about some of the coaching decisions during the course of the contest. Freshman running back J.K. Dobbins seemed to have his way with the Nittany Lions defense for much of the first quarter but didn’t see the ball at all in the second quarter. Mike Weber received those carries and it seemed to be that Dobbins was either forgotten about or hurt - it was hard to tell which. Dobbins did finish with 88 yards, but 50 of those came in the first quarter. In hindsight, it seems as though the coaches were going with a split between the two, as Weber played all 18 snaps in the second quarter. Dobbins was in for most of the third quarter and Weber dominated the fourth.

The tandem in the backfield has been more of a blessing than a curse for the Buckeyes, but it’s interesting to see the coaching staff trying to figure out the best way to keep both players involved. There’s no question that both are talented, and though Dobbins probably has the edge this season, Weber is still an impressive back. Ohio State’s next game comes at Iowa and there will sure to be more insight into what the staff wants to do with the two great running backs.

“We've talked about it. It would be a great thing for our program and this community. I don't want it at the forefront of what we do and talk about on a daily basis, but it is a reminder and kind of a backdrop type of thing, in terms of motivation.”

- Kevin McGuff via Mechelle Voepel, ESPN

Ohio State women’s basketball is also competing for championships thanks to a solid squad led by all-everything Kelsey Mitchell. The Buckeyes made it to the Sweet 16 last season but arguably had the talent to go even further, and that’s exactly what they plan to do this season — except there’s an added bonus this time around. The Women’s Final Four will be hosted in Columbus this year, meaning if the Buckeyes can get to those coveted last four spots in the NCAA tournament, they’ll be playing at home.

If the Buckeyes manage it, it will also mark the 25th anniversary of the last time Ohio State made the Final Four in 1993. That team was also led by a high-scoring guard in Katie Smith as a freshman. The Buckeyes were eventually knocked out 84-82 by Texas Tech and Sheryl Swoopes (who scored 47 points) in the Final Four. Still, the women’s basketball team is something to watch this season in Mitchell’s last go-around with the Buckeyes. And she’s looking to end her career in Scarlet and Gray on a high note.

The fifth-year senior is a lot better than you think against top talent.

When the lights are brightest, the best come to play.

And the best came out when Penn State squared off with Ohio State last Saturday.

Heisman favorite Saquon Barkley continued his incredible season, tallying a pair of scores, including his opening kickoff return for a touchdown. Trace McSorley totaled 241 yards and three touchdowns.

On the opposite sideline, the Buckeyes saw K.J. Hill explode for 12 receptions and 102 yards. Austin Mack and Johnnie Dixon also made some huge plays, and Sam Hubbard didn’t care how many guys he had to tackle to win the day.

Game-Winning TD for Ohio State

The stars were out in full force in Columbus.

But it was Joe Thomas Barrett IV that stole the show.

J.T. Barrett was money all evening long, leading the Scarlet and Gray to a historic 39-38 comeback victory. In his most efficient game to date, Barrett completed 33 of 39 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions. He added another 95 yards on the ground.

With the Buckeyes’ season hanging in the balance, the fifth-year senior went 13-for-13 in the final quarter for 170 yards and three TDs.

It was a virtuoso performance from a quarterback that’s been a lightning rod for criticism over the past few seasons. Barrett shed the narrative that he can’t win big games and vaulted himself to the top of the Heisman discussion.

Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett was tremendous yesterday on throws targeted 10+ yards downfield.

Barrett and OSU knocked off Penn State, 39-38. pic.twitter.com/vPvIGV60oK

— PFF College Football (@PFF_College) October 29, 2017

Despite the narrative, Barrett has proven throughout his career that he responds when the Buckeyes need him at his best.

His outing against Penn State is just the latest example of him answering the call for Ohio State.

Here’s a look at how he’s fared in big moments facing top-ranked teams.

It’s obvious that things haven’t always worked out for Barrett. Especially in recent contests, where very little has gone his way.

More often than not, though, Barrett shows up.

No. 16 has recorded an adjusted QBR of at least 86, six times now. Whether he’s doing it with his arm or legs, Barrett continues to produce with both. Even if he’s having an off day, don’t expect any free turnovers from him.

And in the 14 career games listed above, the Barrett-led Buckeyes have only lost four times.

With Penn State in town, the Texas native was otherworldly.

J.T.'s never had a completion % above 65 in any big game of his career. He finished with an 84.6 completion % yesterday.

— Kyle Sumner McKinnon (@Kyle_McKinnon6) October 29, 2017

Against top-ranked teams, Barrett totaled the most yardage (423) against Penn State. Next closest is 386 yards vs. Michigan State in 2014.

— Kyle Sumner McKinnon (@Kyle_McKinnon6) October 29, 2017

Barrett stunned just about everyone watching when he shredded then-No. 2 ranked Penn State, who entered play with the No. 1 scoring defense and No. 9 total defense.

He had a tremendous game and deserves praise for his performance.

But this isn’t entirely new territory for him.

Barrett has shown to be effective in important spots for Ohio State. From Oklahoma and Wisconsin in 2016, to the time he walked into East Lansing, Mich., as a redshirt freshman in 2014 and steamrolled Michigan State.

At the end of the day, a narrative has been put to bed and critics are finally silent.

All because Barrett went out and did what he does best.

The Buckeyes created enough negative plays to shut down Saquon Barkley and company when it mattered.

The Buckeyes prevailed Saturday afternoon in one of the wildest matchups you’ll ever watch. J.T. Barrett was nearly perfect in leading the offense back from an 18-point deficit, while the defense held the Nittany Lions to just 10 second-half points. Some defensive notes from the back-and-forth affair:

  • The No. 1 goal for the defense was obvious: stop, or at least contain, Heisman-frontrunner Saquon Barkley. A game-opening kick-return touchdown wasn’t exactly what the Buckeyes had in mind, but Barkley only managed 44 yards on 21 carries with 36 of those yards coming on his lone offensive touchdown. By limiting Barkley to just 0.4 yards per carry on 20 of his 21 carries, Ohio State kept Penn State from killing the clock and putting this game out of reach.
  • The Buckeyes tied a season high with 13 (!!!) tackles for a loss Saturday. Penn State’s seven third-down conversions in 15 tries was less than ideal, but the Buckeyes’ ability to consistently force negative plays helped shut down drives before they could get started.
  • Other than a terrible questionable overturned Denzel Ward interception that resulted in a 37-yard touchdown, the Silver Bullets only allowed one pass over 20 yards. Even that was a contested 22-yard fade to stud tight end 6’6” Mike Gesicki. The Buckeyes secondary was a massive red flag to start the year, but the corners and safeties have grown up and held Trace McSorley to his second-worst game of the season through the air.

The Nittany Lions turned two massive kick returns and an early Ohio State fumble into 21 points. Their other two offensive touchdowns each came after Buckeye interceptions were overturned. Let’s go over some of the standout performances that helped Ohio State rise to the top of the Big Ten.

Ohio State’s defensive backs made their presence felt in the run game

While the Buckeye corners struggled to slow down Indiana and Oklahoma’s passing attacks, they’ve remained solid tacklers against the run all season. Denzel Ward is an assassin, and Kendall Sheffield packs a punch at 6’0”, 185 pounds. Jordan Fuller has emerged as the Buckeyes latest stud safety, and Damon Webb has continued to rebound in his second full season as a starter. Still, the defense hadn’t faced anyone near Barkley’s caliber, and missed tackles on the perimeter are the easiest way to give up massive plays.

Ohio State’s linebackers did a great job flowing sideline-to-sideline all game, but it was the defensive backs who forced numerous big plays in the third quarter that helped keep the Nittany Lions rushing game grounded:

Barkley may have looked ridiculous bouncing back from holes and attempting to reverse field all game — but that’s what happens when big-time players have no room to run and they’re used to making bonkers plays on a weekly basis. The Buckeye defensive backs were patient and anticipated the ball coming back their way all game. Their ability to finish tackles and put the Nittany Lions in third-and-longs was crucial during the third quarter.

One-shining moment for the Buckeyes special teams

The Buckeyes were absolutely brutal on special teams for most of the game. While Ohio State is yet to allow a punt return yard this season, the kickoff unit continued to be an issue by allowing 97- and 59-yard returns Saturday. Still, much like Penn State from a season ago, the Buckeyes were able to swing the momentum of the game with a huge blocked punt courtesy of Ward:

Leaving the fastest Buckeye on the team unblocked was a peculiar decision, but Ward did a great job ultimately blocking the kick, and Dante Booker managed to snag the ball to give Ohio State new life following Barrett’s potentially back-breaking fumble.

Ohio State’s knockout punch is their defensive line

The Buckeyes defensive line regularly swarmed both Barkley and McSorley in the backfield, holding the Nittany Lions to just 2.6 yards per carry on the day. Jalyn Holmes and Dre’Mont Jones each recorded a sack, while Sam Hubbard and Robert Landers each picked up multiple tackles for a loss. Nick Bosa didn’t stand out on the stat sheet, but Urban Meyer was quick to point out the coaches credited him with seven quarterback hurries.

The defensive line made a mirage of big plays on the team’s final two drives, defeating any potential for a Nittany Lions’ comeback:

The Buckeyes goal on defense has been to combine a ferocious pass rush with tight-man coverage on the backend and ridiculously athletic linebackers everywhere in-between. Still, the defensive line is the unit most capable part of the team at completely taking over a game, and they managed to do so with the Buckeyes’ season on the line.

The Buckeyes biggest win of the season (so far) will be followed by a token potential-trap game in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes. Iowa has only topped Ohio State once in the last 25 years, and the Buckeyes will need to bring their A-game come 3:30 p.m. Saturday to keep their perfect Big Ten record alive.

The final: 39-38, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Jordan Fuller (9 tackles, 8 solo, 1 TFL)

Defensive play of the game: The Buckeyes defensive line finishing the game the rushmen way.

Next Victim: Iowa. Keep it classy, Columbus.
