The Buckeyes were playing on the ‘Junior Varsity’ setting on Saturday.

Conference wins don’t come much easier than that.

Ohio State dominated Illinois from the opening snap in their 52-14 win on Senior Day, sending the seniors —and a host of other players heading to the NFL— off in style, while clinching the Big Ten East crown as they head to Ann Arbor this weekend for The Game.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holyland, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn break down the Buckeyes’ easy win, and their main takeaways from the game, including:

  • Being encouraged about the continued commitment to the running game, and wondering whether Mike Weber just played his final game at Ohio Stadium.
  • How Parris Campbell has become the most underrated player on the team.
  • J.T. Barrett throwing for his 100th career passing touchdown, and why the offense didn’t need to be very creative.
  • Trying to explain the rationale for bringing the starters back into the game up 38-7, and why it’s obvious that Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow still have much to learn.
  • Praising the defense, who looked like they were playing a game of NCAA Football on the ‘junior varsity’ difficulty setting.

The guys also give their thoughts on the legacy of the senior class, why the NFL Draft is going to force the Buckeyes to reload again next season, and give their early impressions on the Michigan game.

Week 13 primer: Per usual, ‘The Game’ highlights season’s final week
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

It’s rivalry week. And, it’s a beautiful thing. Paul Bunyan’s Axe, the Old Oaken Bucket, the Heroes Trophy and the Land of Lincoln Trophy are all up for grabs. But the biggest game of all--Ohio State at Michigan--needs no trophy. It's simply called "The Game."

The coach also reacts to the passing of Buckeye great Terry Glenn.

After a blowout 52-14 victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday, attention turned to Saturday’s rivalry game against the Michigan Wolverines. However, this morning, Ohio State fans were stunned by the news that Buckeye legend Terry Glenn had been killed in a car accident.

With the fandom’s focus split between “The Game” and remembering an OSU great, Urban Meyer took to the podium for his weekly press conference to set the stage for the regular season finale against That Team Up North.

While the Buckeyes currently sit at No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings with just two weeks to play, there is still a legitimate path to making the final four. The most obvious route would require OSU to win out, and for No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Miami to do the same, eliminating other one and two-loss teams from contention. However, despite the possibility, Meyer was not interested in discussing potential postseason destinations for his team.

Illinois Recap

Michigan Preview

  • Meyer said that being in the toughest division in college football means that it is nearly impossible to “save things” for the Michigan game.
  • He added that it is no longer the big eight and the little two in the Big Ten conference.
  • Meyer mentioned that the history of the rivalry game has shown that both teams will play their best on Saturday.
  • The coach said that the staff has been doing film study for the Michigan game longer than normal.
  • Meyer said that the team’s base zone-read scheme, that you have to have impactful play from the guards. With Jordan and Knox playing well as of late, that has been an important part of this season’s success.
  • He said that this rivalry is not just a one-week thing at Ohio State. He added that he learned that from Woody Hayes, Earl Bruce, and Jim Tressel that you have to have this rivalry in your blood to fully appreciate it.
  • Meyer said, “Darn near every day you get reminded of this game. There would have to be something wrong with you not to get it.”
  • The coach added that the team is “extremely focused.”
  • Meyer said that he doesn’t think that the history of the rivalry doesn’t impact his young players, because they can pop in the tape and see how good of a team they have been this year and last year.
  • The coach said that there is “ridiculous pressure” in the recruiting battle between OSU and Michigan.
  • Meyer said that no matter who ends up playing quarterback for Michigan, they will still be a downhill running team.
Depth Chart

  • Meyer said that with time, the Buckeye offensive line has gained maturity, making them one of the most improved position groups on the team this year.
  • The running back split is something naturally developed, rather than a pre-season plan.
Miscellaneous

  • Meyer gives credit to former offensive coordinator Tom Herman for “finding” J.T. Barrett in their first recruiting class. They had been focusing on Mitch Trubisky and Malik Zaire, but they ended up going elsewhere, so he put a lot of trust in Herman.
  • Meyer said that he just heard about Terry Glenn’s death just before the press conference started. He added that he didn’t know the former receiver well, but that his loss is incredibly sad.
  • Meyer said that Earl Bruce has been very important to his understanding of the rivalry. He taught him the intensity and respect that the rivalry requires.
  • The coach added that when the OSU staff was told that Bruce’s final game would be against Michigan, he didn’t believe it, but that the team found a way to win the game.
  • He said that it was very emotional to see Bruce win his final game.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will wrap up the regular season by traveling to Ann Arbor, MI to take on the Michigan Wolverines this Saturday. The game will kick off at 12:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FOX. The network’s coverage will begin at 10:30 a.m. ET.

The Buckeye WR had a record-setting performance in Columbus in 1995 before having a successful NFL career.

Numerous reports indicate that former NFL star and Ohio State legend Terry Glenn was killed in a car accident early this morning in Irving, Texas. Glenn was 43 years old.

#BREAKING: Former Ohio State and NFL wide receiver Terry Glenn has died in a car accident MORE TO COME

— Dayton Daily News (@daytondailynews) November 20, 2017

Despite initially joining the Buckeye team as a walk-on, Glenn was eventually honored as an All-Big Ten and All-American wide receiver, winning the Fred Biletnikoff Award for the nation’s best receiver in 1995. Glenn still holds the OSU record for the most receiving yards in a game with 253 from his nine-reception game against Pittsburgh in 1995. His four TD catches in the game is still tied for the most in a single-game by a Buckeye.

In his third and final season in Columbus, Glenn amassed 1,411 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. His 1995 receiving total still ranks as the second most in Buckeye history, behing only David Boston’s 1,435 yards in 1998.

In his NFL career, the receiver played for the Patriots, Packers, and Cowboys, going to the Super Bowl with New England in 1996 and 2001. He was the Sports Illustrated Rookie of the Year in 1996 and made the Pro Bowl in 1999.

In addition to the 8,823 yards and 44 touchdowns in his NFL career, Glenn will also be remembered for having caught the first touchdown pass in the professional career of arguably the greatest quarterback in league history, Tom Brady. On Oct. 14, 2001, the former Buckeye WR caught a 21-yard pass from the former Michigan QB in a 29-26 win over the Chargers.

As Buckeye nation was planning to focus on this Saturday’s game against Michigan, as you give thanks later this week, please remember Glenn’s friends, family, and fiancé, as they deal with his loss.

You weren’t the only one who watched the Buckeyes defeat the Fighting Illini on Saturday.

Over 100,000 fans took in J.T. Barrett, Billy Price, Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes, Tracy Sprinkle, and the rest of the senior Buckeyes take part in their last home game as Ohio State student athletes on Saturday against the Fighting Illini of Illinois.

As Ohio State ran away to a huge victory, fans weren’t the only ones excited to have a chance to watch the longtime Buckeyes play on the Ohio Stadium turf one last time. Playing host to more than the Fighting Illini, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff also played host to a solid group of prospects.

While no big time verbal commitments happened over the weekend, the experience did help give the recruits a better feeling on what it would be like to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

Below are just some of the prospects that made the trek to Columbus in the rain to see the Buckeyes in game action:

5-star DE Tyreke Smith

Class: 2018

Town: Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights

Offers: Ohio State, Penn State, USC, Alabama, Oregon, etc

Breakdown: Unofficially visiting Columbus once again, the Buckeyes would love to add the in-state talent to Larry Johnson’s stout rotation along the defensive line.

Ohio state today ❗#OH

— Tyreke Smith™ (@T_23_baller) November 18, 2017
4-star DT Tyler Friday

Class: 2018

Town: Ramsey, NJ/Don Bosco Prep

Offers: Ohio State, Michigan, Miami, Penn State, Alabama, etc

Breakdown: Thought by some as a lean to arch-rival Michigan, Ohio State got the opportunity to show Friday what it would be like to play for the Buckeyes. While OSU is looking to add another defensive lineman or two to the 2018 class, Friday might not end up in Columbus when it is all said and done, but the visit definitely gave him a lot to think over before he announces his college commitment.

4-star QB Jarren Williams

Class: 2018

Town: Lawrenceville, GA/Central Gwinnett

Offers: Ohio State, Miami, Auburn, Alabama, Kentucky, etc

Breakdown: With longtime OSU pledge Emory Jones flirting with the Crimson Tide of Alabama, Ohio State has started to show interest in numerous other 2018 signal callers. While the Buckeyes have been in on Williams, a former University of Kentucky commit for quite sometime, they will need to fight off the likes of Miami and Auburn to snag his talents.

4-star OT Michael Tarquin

Class: 2019

Town: Belleview, FL/Belleview

Offers: Ohio State, South Carolina, Miami, Michigan, Clemson, etc

Breakdown: Visiting Ohio State numerous times this season, Tarquin made the trek up from Florida once again. Already holding a verbal commitment from fellow 2019 offensive tackle Doug Nester, some around the recruiting scene believe it’s only a matter of time before the four-star standout follows in Nester’s footsteps and gives the Buckeye coaching staff his word.

3-star OLB Dezman Cooper

Class: 2019

Town: Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg

Offers: Miami (OH)

Breakdown: Like others, Cooper is no stranger to the Ohio State campus. One of the top overall junior prospects in Central Ohio, Cooper has yet to pick up a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes, but is definitely on their radar.

I had a great time at the Buckeye game! Thanks coach @OSUCoachKDub for the invite. @CoachBillDavis @R2X_Rushmen1 @OSUCoachHinton Go Bucks ️ @OhioStateFB

From the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award to Defensive Rookie of the Year, several Buckeyes are vying for some recognition for the 2017 season.

Ohio State is now officially the champion of the Big Ten East, and will face off against Wisconsin for the conference title. Once the rainy action from Saturday’s Senior Day had dissipated, focus shifted to Beat Michigan Week. While Columbus started preparing to take on the Wolverines, former Ohio State players in the NFL continued their campaigns for postseason honors.

From the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award to Defensive Rookie of the Year, there should be many Buckeyes receiving some hardware at the end of the season. It’s not just individual awards either, fan voting is now open for the 2018 Pro Bowl, and there are 20 Buckeyes you can vote for on the ballot.

Here’s how Buckeyes in the NFL fared in Week 11:

Sunday Night Football

One of the NFL’s biggest rivalries went down on primetime in Week 11 on Sunday Night Football when the Dallas Cowboys (Noah Brown, Mike Nugent, Rod Smith — still no Ezekiel Elliott) hosted the Philadelphia Eagles (Malcolm Jenkins). The matchup was filled with inconsistent play from both teams early on, but the Eagles came out of halftime hungry, and they feasted, winning 37-9.

After the Cowboys offense struggled to get things going a couple plays into their second-drive, they got the ball to rookie Noah Brown for a 14-yard first down. That was the only catch for the Buckeye wideout on Sunday, but he did have a couple key blocks in a tough game for Dallas. With Elliott suspended, another Buckeyes rusher, Rod Smith, was expected to see some additional touches. In Week 11, he had eight carries for 11 yards — but the Cowboys offense has a whole didn’t do much.

In an ode to his time at Ohio State, kicker Mike Nugent was the sole reason Dallas put any points on the board Sunday, making 3-of-3 field goal kicks for nine points.

The Eagles already lead the NFC East — and the entire league for the matter — and are on their way to a postseason run that could end up resembling their 2004 Super Bowl stretch. Leading the team, both on the field and in the locker room, Buckeye Malcolm Jenkins has been a positive contributor to the Philadelphia secondary, the national protest conversation and every community in which he’s played, including Columbus.

Heading into Week 11’s rivalry game, Jenkins had claimed 47 total tackles (42 solo) — with a game-high 10 tackles against Washington in late-October — along with five pass breakups and one sack. On Sunday, he recorded his first interception of the 2017 season, along with four total tackles and two pass breakups.

Malcolm in the middle. #Eagles ball.#FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/v3d27rK4IW

— Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) November 20, 2017

His stat line hasn’t been particularly noteworthy this season, but that’s where box-score analysis can be misleading. Jenkins flies all over the field and is an absolute terror on the outside. More than that, he leads a very young group of defensive backs and safeties for the Eagles, and his tutelage has made a lot of those guys better throughout the season. Jenkins lines up at four different positions for the Eagles secondary and rarely misses a snap.

I would have to say @MalcolmJenkins !!! I sat beside him in meetings everyday. I learned a lot. He's the vocal leader, he knows the entire defense, and plays with so much passion and energy. He also brings the same energy to practice day in and day out

— Earl Wolff (@Ewolff28) November 20, 2017
Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

The nominees for the fourth annual Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award were announced earlier in the week, and the Steelers’ selection was former Buckeye DE Cameron Heyward.

Players are chosen for exemplifying outstanding sportsmanship on the field. The award is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

The winner will be announced during the NFL Honors show on Saturday, February 3 on NBC (the night before Super Bowl LII). The winner will receive a $25,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to a charity of his choice and a trophy.

Heyward continues to be a pillar for the Steelers defense, just this week claiming his second two-sack game of the season on Thursday night against the Titans. Not only did he help Pittsburgh have their first 4 interception, 5 sack game since 1984, but he now has a total of 7.0 sacks on the season — along with 32 total tackles, five stuffs and one forced fumble.

Lattimore DROY?

Just a year after another Buckeye claimed the Defensive Rookie of the Year postseason honor -- Joey Bosa — the list of candidates once again includes a former Ohio State player: Marshon Lattimore.

Contributing to one of the more productive rookie classes in the NFL this season, according to Danny Kelly of The Ringer, New Orleans’ first-round draft pick has already proven himself to be worth the top choice. In just over half of a season in the league, Lattimore has earned a reputation as one of the better shutdown corners in the NFL, forcing opposing quarterbacks to a combined 42.3 passer rating when targeting receivers covered by the Buckeye rookie.

You know about what Marshon Lattimore has done in coverage, but how about as a tackler?

Last year at Ohio State he missed zero of the solo tackles he attempted.

This year with the #Saints, Lattimore hasn't missed a tackle yet and leads the team in solo tackles with 31.

— Jon Ledyard (@LedyardNFLDraft) November 16, 2017
Play of the Week

Joey Bosa

(I might as well re-name this section Bosa sack of the Week.) It’s Week 11, and with several records already surpassed, and having already sent some gear to Canton for display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Joey Bosa continues to terrorize quarterbacks. The Buckeye didn’t just get another sack on Sunday against Buffalo, he also forced a fumble setting up a scoop and score by his teammate to extend their lead.

Other Notables

Patriots look like Ohio State did yesterday....That makes the Raiders the Fighting Illini...

— Steve Levy (@espnSteveLevy) November 19, 2017
  • Saints safety Vonn Bell had a career-high 13 total tackles in Sunday’s overtime win against Washington — not to mention, a sack and forced fumble.
  • Just two weeks after being pulled up to the active roster, the Indianapolis Colts waived second-year linebacker Joshua Perry — the Buckeye was able to make it to Ohio Stadium on Saturday though, for Senior Day, so that’s a little but of a silver lining.
  • Panthers’ safety Kurt Coleman was fined just under $25k by the league for his Week 9 hit against Devonte Freeman, but the Buckeye plans to appeal.
  • Speaking of appeal... the Ezekiel Elliott suspension-saga is now over. The running back phenom has decided to drop his appeal and serve the remaining games under his six-game suspension. He’ll be back on the field for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16 against the Seahawks.
Injury Report and Inactives

  • Bad news for Buckeye rookie Curtis Samuel. After a slow start to his NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, thanks to lingering injuries, he’s now out for the remainder for the year after suffering ligament damage in his left ankle during last week’s game.
  • After missing most of the season, the Oakland Raiders finally placed Gareon Conley on IR this week, due to a lingering shin injury that just wouldn’t shake.
  • Washington listed Terrelle Pryor Sr. as inactive on Sunday; the receiver had been having issues with ankles throughout the week, leading up to the missed game. Also out this week, was Broncos tight end Jeff Heuerman, who missed practice during the week with an knee injury.
  • Giants CB Eli Apple was inactive in Week 11, as he tended to his Mom, Annie Apple, following brain surgery this week. (We’re wishing the fabulous Annie a speedy recovery!)
