Both sides of the ball did what they needed to do, and now we can turn to The Game.

That went exactly how it should — Ohio State entered garbage time after just 16 plays by Illinois’ offense, mounting a 38-0 lead before half time. Illinois was the worst team on Ohio State’s schedule going by the S&P+ rankings, and well, the score reflected that. Ohio State had a +49% success rate:

In the table above, scoring opportunity efficiency looks at the average points scored per scoring opportunity -- drives with a first down past the opponents' 40-yard line. Drive efficiency looks at the percentage of drives that were scoring opportunities. Rushing opportunity rate is the % of runs that gained five or more yards. Rushing stuff rate is the % of runs that were for no gain or a loss. Explosive plays are 12+ yard runs and 20+ yard passes here.

Garbage time kicked in a little before halftime, when Ohio State went up 38-0.

Here are the takeaways that I said would be most important in the game preview:

  1. The Illini are overmatched in almost every statistical category, but have bright spots in their running offense with Cam Thomas at QB, tight end Louis Dorsey, and freshman receiver Ricky Smalling.
  2. The young Illini offensive line has a very bad matchup with Ohio State’s elite defensive line, ranking 89th and 123rd in offensive stuff rate and adjusted sack rate.
  3. The Illini defense is pretty solid, ranking 69th overall, and doing a great job preventing explosive plays.
Offense: Short fields will do that

Ohio State had six drives before the game went into garbage time, scoring on all of them (with one field goal). On those six drives, the last four averaged starting on the Ohio State 49 yard line due to five-straight three-and-outs by the Illini offense. With so many short fields, it was almost inevitable that the Buckeyes would score on all of them. While Ohio State’s 62% overall success rate is incredible (for comparison, Ohio State had only one better game in the 2015-2016 seasons — the opener vs. Bowling Green).

Everything went well for the Buckeyes, but I’ll highlight how dynamic Parris Campbell is with the ball in his hands — no one else on the team has his blend of vision, lateral quickness, and acceleration. That was most evident on his 44-yard touchdown run, but he also led the team with 59 receiving yards.

One surprise -- Mike Weber was the more explosive back for the second straight week, ripping off 43-yard and 22-yard runs by breaking multiple tackles and just outrunning the secondary. Weber looks healthy now — which will be huge for Ohio State’s next two upcoming games.

If you want to do some nitpicking, then you could talk about how Binjimen Victor’s touchdown was the only completion to a non-slot receiver before garbage time kicked in. So... there’s that, I guess.

Defense: Total domination, but an over-matched opponent

There’s not too much to say here: Illinois had five-straight three-and-outs before the game entered garbage time. Illinois’ offense was already in bad shape, but they had to go back to a quarterback that was previously benched, so their one successful passing play shouldn’t have been too surprising.

The Worley-Borland-Harrison/Baker combination seems to be working out well, but again, there’s not too much you can take away from this, to be honest. As of the mid-third quarter (when I’m writing this, for self-disclosure), Illinois still only had three completed passes for 9 yards, and just one first down.

But again — when the defense is this dominant, the offense gets some amazing field position.

And with that victory, it is now officially M*ch*g*n Week!

The No. 9 Ohio State Buckeyes are heading back to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship game following their Senior Day victory over the Illinois Fighting Illini, 52-14. The win was the ninth straight in the series for the Buckeyes, dating back to 2008 (the teams did not play in 2016). With the win, OSU retains its only rivalry trophy, the beloved and iconic wooden turtle known as The Illibuck. The Buckeyes will face off with No. 5 Wisconsin in two weeks for the conference title, and perhaps a shot at the College Football Playoffs.

Coming into the game, S&P+ indicated that Illinois would be the lowest ranked team that the Buckeyes would face all year, and that was borne out early and often on Saturday. Quarterback J.T. Barrett, one of 19 seniors playing their final home game, orchestrated a nearly perfect offensive performance during his less than one half of action.

The Buckeyes opened the game with a methodical, nine-play, 75-yard drive to get the scoring started. Running back Mike Weber took the ball in from four yards out to put OSU up 7-0 just over three minutes into the game.

On the series, Barrett went 3-4 for 29, and freshman RB J.K. Dobbins picked up 14 yards on the ground. Also on the first drive, Barrett had an 18-yard rush to give him the school record for rushing yards by a quarterback, besting his former wide-receiver Braxton Miller, who had the old record at 3,054 yards.

After a three-and-out by the Illini, Parris Campbell took the ball from Weber on a reverse and went 44 yards inside the Illinois five-yard line. On the next play, Barrett kept the ball and lunged over the goal line to extend the Buckeye lead to 14-0 with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. After the first two drives, Campbell had already picked up 65 yards in total offense.

After another Illinois punt, Weber took a third down-handoff and raced 43 yards into the endzone to put the Buckeyes up 21-0 less than ten minutes into the game. In the past two weeks, Weber has shown breakaway speed that he didn’t seem to have during his redshirt freshman season in 2016. Now that he is healthy, and apparently adding speed to his arsenal of weapons, Weber could be looking at his NFL options come season’s end.

After the third Illinois punt of the quarter, Barrett connected with Campbell again on a 38-yard catch-and-run, and then from the 11, the QB hooked up with Binjimen Victor on a touchdown. The scoring pass was Barrett’s 100th of his career, the most for a quarterback in both Ohio State and Big Ten conference history. The score put the Buckeyes up 28-0.

The Buckeyes’ fifth possession of the game ended with a Sean Nuernberger 33-yard field goal that extended the OSU advantage to 31-0 with 12:19 left in the first half. Despite the Buckeyes not being able to punch it in from the redzone, the offense was humming, with Barrett going 9-15 for 114 yards at that point in the second quarter.

Following Illinois’ fifth punt in as many drives, Barrett took the ball 53 yards on eight plays, seven on the ground, to up the score to 38-0. Dobbins capped the drive on a one-yard touchdown run. The score was the seventh for the true-freshman on the season. While head coach Urban Meyer has said that Dobbins has earned the right to be the team’s starting running back, Weber, the more physical of the pair, has been seeing the bulk of the carries around the goal line in recent weeks, upping his touchdown total.

On the first play of the next drive, Barrett handed the ball off to Dobbins with 6:10 left in the second quarter, and then on the next play, redshirt-freshman Dwayne Haskins entered the game at quarterback, which appeared to end Barrett’s career in Ohio Stadium... that is until the third quarter. On the drive, center Billy Price and the offensive line exited the game as well, just minutes before the clouds opened and heavy rains began to fall.

The starting quarterback finished the half with 126 yards passing on 10-16 passing. Barrett also had 33 yards rushing and two touchdowns, one on the ground and one in the air.

From there, OSU punter Drue Chrisman saw his first action of the game, and on the subsequent drive, Illinois picked up its first first down with 3:28 left in the half. At that point, the Buckeye defense was mostly comprised of second string players as well.

At the conclusion of the first half, Weber had 91 yards rushing and two touchdowns, while Dobbins had 44 yards and a score.

The domination wasn’t confined to the scoreboard either, as the Buckeyes had 358 yards of offense in the first two quarters and Illinois only had 43, including just nine yards through the air. OSU went into the locker-room with a well-balanced 229 yards rushing and 129 yards passing.

The Illini ended OSU’s hopes for a shutout on the Buckeyes’ first drive of the second half. Haskins kept the ball on a read option, and was hit immediately, and the ball popped out. Illinois DB Ahmari Hayes scooped it up in the pouring rain and ran 53 yards into the endzone. With 11:04 left in the third quarter, the Buckeyes led 38-07.

After the fumble, Ohio State’s offensive starters came back into the game. A pair of rushes and an incompletion later, and Chrisman punted again. In the wet conditions, Illinois’ Nate Hobbs coughed up the ball, and it was recovered by OSU’s Jeffrey Okudah, setting the Buckeyes up at the Illinois 29.

On third down, Barrett and the offensive line rolled left, but tight end Marcus Baugh snuck through and crossed the field to the right, where Barrett found him for an easy 12-yard TD pass, to increase the OSU advantage to 45-7.

On the next drive, Illinois was forced to punt after a three-and-out for the ninth time, and redshirt-sophomore quarterback Joe Burrow entered the game to lead the Buckeyes. However, after the new QB recovered his own fumble, OSU was forced to punt again.

With the second team defense on the field, Illinois did pick up its second first down before the end of the third quarter, but sophomore defensive end Jonathon Cooper picked up his second sack of the game to force yet another Illini punt.

On the ensuing drive, Haskins was back in for the Buckeyes, and even though the score was 45-7, the freshman QB was still throwing downfield, including 33 and 13-yarders to Terry McLaurin. The Buckeyes finished the drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Haskins to Victor, moving the score to 52-14.

After the kickoff, Illinois was able to cross the 50-yard line for the first time in the game. As the Illini moved into the redzone for the first time, quarterback Chayce Crouch rushed to the outside and as he stepped out of bounds, freshman safety Isaiah Pryor was blocked into him, and flagged for a late hit. Crouch went down to the ground hard and needed assistance to get off the field.

On the next play, backup QB Cam Miller entered and kept the ball on the option and scampered to paydirt for Illinois’ first offensive score of the game. With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Buckeyes were up 52-14, as the rain continued to intensify, and that is where the day’s scoring ended.

The Buckeyes will conclude their regular season against the No. 24 Michigan Wolverines. The game will kick off at 12:00 p.m. ET from The Big House in Ann Arbor, MI.

On Senior Day, the QB sets yet another school and conference record.

There have been more lows during J.T. Barrett’s senior season than many people anticipated, but there have also been an incredible amount of highs, including the quarterback etching his name into the Ohio State and Big Ten record books multiple times. And, on Senior Day against the Illinois Fighting Illini, he did it again.

With his first quarter pass to Binjimen Victor, Barrett became the first QB in school and conference history to amass 100 touchdown passes in his career. The scoring throw was his 31st of the season, which pairs well with his eight rushing scores as well. Currently, the Wichita Falls, TX-native has an OSU and B1G record 139 touchdowns accounted for during his career.

The remaining members of the legendary 2013 recruiting class have changed the way the OSU program is perceived.

With just two games left to play, this weekend’s Ohio State matchup against Illinois will be the final home game of the 2017 college football season, which means that it is the last time that 19 Buckeye seniors will suit up to play in The Horseshoe.

Senior Day in The ‘Shoe is always emotional, for both players and fans. This group of seniors has been a steadying influence for the team for years, and their departure will be a tough pill to swallow for Buckeye fans who can no longer rely on the steadfastness and dedication of Billy Price, or Tyquan Lewis making a stuff at the line, or J.T. Barrett miraculously finding a way to keep an important drive alive.

The 2013 Ohio State recruiting class was a watershed moment in the Urban Meyer era in Columbus. The heights that Meyer’s first full class at OSU have taken the program to have redefined how the college football world views the Ohio State Buckeyes. While a number of players from that class are already making their names in the NFL (Joey Bosa, Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, Ezekiel Elliott, Darron Lee), the players that have remained are continuing to have a profound impact on the Buckeye program.

Since arriving on campus, the 2013 recruiting class has amassed a 57-8 record, four-straight Big Ten division titles, one B1G conference title, two College Football Playoff appearances, and the 2014 National Championship... and they aren’t done yet. Not to mention the fact that they already have four pairs of Gold Pants as well.

Before they take to the home field for the the final time, let’s take a look back at the 19 seniors being honored today, and appreciate all that they’ve accomplished during their careers, as well as what they have given to the team, university, and larger Ohio State community:

J.T. Barrett (QB)

The man, the myth, the legend. Barrett has been all of those things for Ohio State football over his seemingly endless tenure with the program. At times, he’s made fans question his talent or urgency, but ultimately he will move on with his football career having claimed more than 23 different school records (!!!), several Big Ten conference records, and as the only player in Ohio State history to be a three-time captain for the football team.

Regardless of how many times you’ve yelled at your TV hoping he can hear you, Saturday’s final home game with Barrett at the helm will be emotional. The fifth-year senior has done it all. He won the No. 2 spot to then replace Braxton Miller ahead of the 2014 season, and then continued to blow everyone’s expectations out of the water until his injury that ended his season against Michigan.

Finally back and healthy in 2015, he had to compete for his job with Cardale Jones. The coaching staff didn’t exactly handle that situation as well as they should have, and Barrett spent most of the time on the bench, until the last few games of the season. Then in 2016, the reigns were once again his, but with new coaches and new receivers, unfortunately, the passing game never got back to where it had been his first year in the pocket, and the offense relied on his legs more than his arm.

With two regular season games still to play, Barrett has amassed a whopping 8,938 passing yards and 99 touchdown passes (against 28 interceptions) with a 64% completion percentage. The quarterback isn’t as elusive as Miller and Pryor had been before him, but he’s efficient, and almost always moves the chains when he needs to. In addition to his incredible passing stats, he claims an additional 3,037 yards on the ground and 38 scores.

The Last Lace Up: JOE! THOMAS! BARRETT! Salute to @JT_theQB4th in his final game in #TheShoe! History will speak your name but the impact you had on this program will inspire Buckeyes for generations. Thank you and a great honor to have you as a Buckeye! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/cWwATBG0wz

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 18, 2017
Marcus Baugh (TE)

The fifth-year senior has saved his best season in a Buckeye uniform for his last. With three touchdown receptions this season, that equals his combined output for the previous three combined. The Riverside, CA-native has 20 receptions and 206 yards in 2017, both on the cusp of breaking his single-season bests.

While tight ends have primarily been used for blocking and as outlet options in Urban Meyer’s offense at Ohio State, Baugh is proving himself to be a viable offensive weapon before he heads off to the next level.

The Last Lace Up: AIR MARCUS BAUGH!! Salute to this stud @MarcusBaugh85 in his final game in #TheShoe! You have literally jumped over every obstacle in your path and we are proud to have you as a Buckeye! Thank you! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/u9Y4Z9kXZQ

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 17, 2017
Stephen Collier (QB)

Despite graduating last year and walking away from his roster spot for Ohio State, the quarterback who stood deep in a depth chart behind guys like Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones will be honored with the 2017 senior class on Saturday. Collier was initially pegged for the No. 2 QB spot behind Barrett in 2016, but a shoulder injury during the spring game would require surgery and he was out for the year.

Trevon Forte (CB)

After playing at Youngstown’s Cardinal Mooney High School, Forte began his career in Columbus as a walk-on eventually earning a scholarship. In 2016, Forte played in the games against Bowling Green and Rutgers. As a sport and industry major, he has already begun exploring what lays ahead for him after his Buckeye career ends.

The Last Lace Up: HARD WORK FORTE!! Salute to this special young man @TgiForte in his final game in #TheShoe! This program loves you because of your hard work and dedication! Enjoy this moment Tre! You deserve it!! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/B0NBzMWnVx

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 17, 2017
Elijaah Goins (WR)

Originally lining up at safety and on special teams, Goins made the move to offense this spring, and tried his luck as a wide receiver. He’s only been with the football program for three years after walking onto the team in early 2015. Goins is finishing his Ohio State career as a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, with a major in pharmaceutical sciences.

The Last Lace Up: Salute to @WorkHardSleepEz in his final game in #TheShoe! Great all-around person and Buckeye! Enjoy this moment Elijah!! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/2CK7sO53l3

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 16, 2017
Cin'Quan Haney (CB)

The 6’1 cornerback joined the Ohio State program as a walk-on in the spring of 2015. Since then, he has earned a scholarship while majoring in physics. An OHSAA gold award winner while at Dayton’s Chaminade-Julienne, Haney and Buckeye teammate Curtis Henry ran for Undergraduate Student Government president and vice-president in 2016. Though the write-in ticket was ultimately unsuccessful, they made quite an impact on the race.

Jackson Hayes (LB)

He might not have contributed on the field for the Buckeyes on Saturdays, but as a member of the scout team, Jackson Hayes has definitely helped make the team better. Just ahead of senior day, the Dublin-native had his black stripe removed and will be honored among his classmates at Senior Day.

⬛️ Congrats to @oj_jackson33. This guy has been displaying great effort this season and doing his part in getting the Buckeyes ready each week! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/RwBJx6HwkL

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 16, 2017
Michael Hill (DT)

One of the more veteran players to participate in Senior Day for the Buckeyes is defensive tackle Michael Hill. After coming to Ohio State in 2013, he red-shirted his first year due to injuries, despite earning playing time in three of the Buckeyes first four games that year as a true freshman. Since then, he’s racked up 36 total tackles (5.0 for loss) and one sack.

His final season in Columbus didn’t exactly start on the best terms, as he was suspended for the first few games of the year — and didn’t end up suiting up again until mid-October.

The Last Lace Up: BIG MIKE!!! Salute to this guy @MichaelReal77 in his final game in #TheShoe! It’s been a long journey but we are proud to be there with you every step of the way! Thank you for your help in making this program better! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/oW81Ce6JQ5

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 16, 2017
Jalyn Holmes (DE)

Despite not officially starting as a junior, Homes received an All-Big Ten honorable mention last year. This season, he has started seven games while serving as one of the team’s captains. Though often overshadowed by his defensive end brethren, Holmes brings an NFL-ready skill set to Larry Johnson’s defensive line. He has racked up 74 tackles in his Buckeye career, including 14 for loss. In addition to his productivity on the field, Holmes has become a fan-favorite for both his engaging persona in interviews, as well as his leadership among his teammates.

The Last Lace Up: #HowSheGoneEat Salute to this young man @JayHolmes_ in his final game in #TheShoe! Thank you for all you have done for this program! It’s been a blessing to have you as a Buckeye! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/jRsPNNy1Ob

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 17, 2017
Jamarco Jones (OL)

After spending years in the shadows of Taylor Decker, the past two seasons have been Jones’ time to shine in the oft-successful offensive tackle position for the Buckeyes. Ohio State has a long tradition of sending their OTs to the NFL, and Jamarco Jones is looking to keep that pipeline alive.

This season marked Jones’ second as the starter at left tackle. Throughout his collegiate career, he’s played well over 1,000 offensive plays from scrimmage and has grown into a leader on an ever evolving offensive line.

The Last Lace Up: JAMARCOOOOOOO JONESSSSS!!!! Salute to this guy @jjones_74 in his final game in #TheShoe! It’s been a absolute pleasure watching you grow as a man and a Buckeye! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/EWZVNOBlJN

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 15, 2017
Tyquan Lewis (DL)

As a junior, Lewis was recognized as the Big Ten’s Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year, and while his numbers aren’t as impressive as they have been over the previous two seasons, the three-year starter and two-time captain has left his mark on the Buckeye program. His 21 career sacks puts him in the top-ten in Ohio State history (8th), and his 33 tackles for loss currently rank 15th. His leadership has also made him a favorite among players and coaches, and will certainly be a quality that NFL scouts appreciate when preparing to take him in this spring’s draft.

The Last Lace Up: BIG BROTHER QUAN!!! Salute to @PrimeTime_Lewis in his final game in #TheShoe! Brotherhood is a quality you promote each day within this program! You’ve remained humble and led this team! We are thankful for your time! Salute Champ! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/LWo0SKmjgd

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 18, 2017
Billy Price (OL)

Already considered a potential first round draft pick next spring, former guard, and now center, Billy Price has been the pillar of stability this season, for both J.T. Barrett and the offensive line. Willing to step up whenever he was needed — and always willing to put in extra work — the Buckeye netted a new school record last week against Michigan State, having started in 51 consecutive games in his career. He’ll extend that record as he finishes out the season, and as Ohio State competes in the postseason.

The Last Lace Up: CHAMP!!!! Salute to @b_price54 in his final game in #TheShoe! Every day our program became better because of your toughness, leadership and smile. Your legacy will be told and live through Buckeye greatness! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/9kg5RWmLVs

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 18, 2017

Price sat down and wrote a letter to Buckeye Nation for Land of 10, and explained what his time playing for Ohio State has meant to him, and how the experience has helped him grow. (Get some tissues ready.)

It’s an incredible responsibility we have to Ohio State fans, to future Buckeyes, the legends past and, of course, to one another. We’re tasked with continuing an excellence that was set forth before we were born and will last long after we are gone.
Clay Raterman (SAF)

One of the newest members of both the Ohio State football program and among the senior class, is local Dublin-native Clay Raterman. He joined the program in the summer of 2017 and was a Fastest Student Finalist at the 2016 Spring Game. He had plenty of football experience though, as a four-time letter-winner in high school, as well as participating in track and lacrosse.

Fun fact: Raterman also competed with his brother on American Ninja Warriors against a team of students from Michigan.

Nick Seme (DL)

After playing at Ashland University, the Wadsworth, OH-native joined the Ohio State program last spring. An exercise science major, the 6’3 defensive lineman has recorded two tackles this season.

Erick Smith (SAF)

The Cleveland-native has gradually made his name known in Columbus. Over the past four years, Smith (who claimed an interception as a true freshman) originally contributed on special teams, but earned additional snaps on defense along the way. He was sidelined for most of 2015 due to injury, but his Ohio State career (up until now) has included 65 total tackles (netting a career-high 30 in 2017) and three pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

The Last Lace Up: OK E!!! Salute to this senior @esmith_1 in his final game in #TheShoe! Through the good times and hard times, you fought like a warrior! It’s been a pleasure having you as a Buckeye! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/eyqMQrCHsH

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 16, 2017
Tracy Sprinkle (DL)

Last season was supposed to be the breakout campaign for Tracy Sprinkle, however, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter of the opening game against Bowling Green. Since then he has worked his way back into playing shape, and is finally making the most of his opportunities. Early in his career, Sprinkle was often in Urban Meyer’s dog house, but over the years, he has matured to the point that he was selected as a captain for 2017, and Meyer often references Sprinkle’s journey in talking about the best of what his program has to offer. The Elyria-native has started eight games this season, accumulating 14 tackles, including three for loss.

The Last Lace Up: BOSS MAN 93!! Salute to @TSprinkle93 in his final game in #TheShoe! You’ve fought and led this team! We have enjoyed watching you grow as a great young man on and off the field! Can’t wait to see your next endeavors. #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/1so5Zhoodd

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 18, 2017
Zach Turnure (LB)

Originally suiting up in the Scarlet and Gray for the Ohio State lacrosse team, Turnure eventually was a walk-on to the football program in the fall of 2014. He spent the majority of his career with the Buckeyes contributing on special teams; he’s a hell of a tackler. The linebacker played in 12 games during the 2015 and 2016 season, before getting some additional playing time this season. With additional opportunities for defensive snaps, his senior season has already seen a career-high 10 total tackles on defense.

The Last Lace Up: MEAT!!!! Salute to this dude @ZachTurnure25 in his final game in #TheShoe! Relentless effort and dedication to being about of this Buckeye fraternity! Thank you for all you have done for this program! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/XeGUx008K3

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 15, 2017
Damon Webb (SAF)

One of the recruits Ohio State “stole” from the state of Michigan (Cass Tech) has turned into the next great safety for the Buckeyes. Webb even played in eight games during the team’s National Championship run in 2014 as a true freshman. In his four years with Ohio State, Webb has amassed 117 total tackles, five pass break-ups, four tackles-for-loss, and four interceptions — with a career-high three picks thus far in his senior season.

The Last Lace Up: Salute to @DameWebb in his final game in #TheShoe! Thank you for all you have done for this program and a great honor to have you as a Buckeye! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/yflwJv1LGT

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 14, 2017
Chris Worley (LB)

Despite being hampered by injuries throughout his senior season, Worley currently ranks as the team’s active leader in career tackles with 136. A captain this season, the Cleveland Glenville alum has notched 38 tackles this season, including four for loss, while being one of the team’s most inspirational leaders. As a linebacker, he has played both inside and outside over the course of his career, as well as during this season. His willingness to play wherever the team needs him, along with his unselfishness to work hard while behind future NFL stars are traits that will serve him well at the next level.

The Last Lace Up: Salute to @TheRealJizzle35 in his final game in #TheShoe! You’ve dreamt of being a Buckeye and achieved that. Your leadership, heart and desire has impacted this program in many ways! Thank you! #GoBucks #BeatIllinois pic.twitter.com/QsUiuj91Bo

The Buckeyes play their final home game of the season against the Illini at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Last Saturday, the Ohio State Buckeyes facilitated the total dismantling of the Michigan State Spartans--a feat which ultimately propelled them four spots upwards to become a legitimate if not outside contender for the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes were running on all cylinders as the offense, led by the line, ran for 300-plus yards against what had previously been a stout rushing defense. The defense held the Spartans to just three points. And special teams, which have been abysmal for most of the season, did not generate too many errors.

Now, Ohio State has something of a letdown before they head to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face Michigan as they face the Fighting Illini of Illinois for the Illibuck trophy. The Illini, under head coach Lovie Smith, are 2-8 on the season and are riding an eight-game losing streak. They have played three different quarterbacks this season, and four of their five offensive linemen are freshmen. Similarly, most players on the defense are freshmen or sophomores. Essentially, Illinois is overmatched in every category against a surging Ohio State squad.

Today is also senior day for the Ohio State team, as the program will recognize 19 seniors, including J.T. Barrett, Billy Price and Tyquan Lewis, among others. It will be the last game in the Horseshoe for a class that has made two appearances in the College Football Playoff and produced some of the highest-scoring offenses in program history.

Ohio State holds a 67-30-4 overall record against the Illini. It doesn’t look like Illinois will begin chipping away at that gap starting this season.

When is the game and how can I watch?

Game Date/Time: Saturday, Nov. 18, 3:30 p.m. ET

Location: Columbus, Ohio

TV: ABC

Online: WatchESPN

Radio: 97.1 FM/1460 AM

Where is GameDay today?

The College Gameday crew is headed to Madison, Wisc., ahead of the matchup between undefeated Wisconsin and No. 24 Michigan. The Badgers, who are sitting at No. 5 in the latest College Football Playoff poll, clinched the Big Ten West last week with a win over Iowa. They are joined by Alabama, Miami and UCF as the only four undefeated teams left nationally. This matchup will be the first featuring Wisconsin that Gameday has featured this season.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to this weekend?

In a strange turn of events, Gameday’s matchup of No. 24 Michigan at No. 5 Wisconsin will be a noon game on FOX. Also at noon, Minnesota heads to No. 23 Northwestern and Rutgers faces Indiana, both on BTN. At 3:30 p.m., Iowa plays Purdue in Iowa City on BTN. At 4 p.m., Nebraska kicks off against No. 10 Penn State in Happy Valley on FS1 while Maryland travels to No. 17 Michigan State on FOX.

Which Buckeyes have stood out on a defense full of studs this season?

This Saturday’s Ohio State-Illinois matchup is perhaps the biggest November mismatch you’ll see outside of the state of Alabama (good luck against the Mercer Bears!). The Buckeyes are currently 41-point favorites over the Fighting Illini, which is the largest spread for an Ohio State conference game in at least 30 years.

Illinois has failed to score 17-plus points against all Big Ten teams other than Rutgers (and do they really count?). They’ve lost to Wisconsin, Purdue, and Indiana by double digits in their last three weeks: Ohio State *shouldn’t* have any problem with the Fighting Illini.

The Buckeyes certainly didn’t expect to have any trouble with the Iowa Hawkeyes either, but breaking down how over-matched Illinois is at all three levels against the Buckeyes defense is a fairly useless endeavor. Instead, let’s break down some of the finer defensive moments from the first 10 weeks of Buckeyes football.

Yeah, Denzel killed a guy!

The Buckeyes have been subjected to more bull shit targeting calls than any other team in the country this season (unverified). Ward’s untimely flag was particularly egregious, warranting an actual apology from the Big Ten. Still, the play remains one of the more lovely displays of violence on the gridiron you’ll ever see:

Ward’s ascension to the team’s top shut-down corner has been a fantastic development for the defense — but he remains the same freshman who routinely downed opposing returns inside the 10-yard line on kickoffs at heart.

Jerome Baker’s coming out party in Nebraska

Baker’s real coming out party of course took place during the Buckeyes’ 2016 win over Oklahoma, but his performance against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this season was nearly as memorable. Few linebackers in the country have Baker’s combination of strength and athleticism, a skill set that allows him to stand tall against the run in the box while also being able to shed over-matched receivers on the perimeter with ease:

Backups Tuf Borland and Malik Harrison filled in admirably for Baker and Dante Booker during the Buckeyes’ win over the Spartans, but Baker still has the highest ceiling of any linebacker on the roster. His ability to make game-changing plays will be needed more than ever during Ohio State’s closing stretch.

Chris Worley sticks it to the Sooners

There wasn’t much to like from this season’s matchup against Oklahoma, but the defense’s ability to keep the game at a 3-3 tie going into halftime was truly impressive. The game eventually got away from the Buckeyes, but Worley and company showed they more than belonged early and stood tall in one-on-one matchups from the No. 4 team in the country:

Worley is able to play all three of Ohio State’s linebacker positions thanks to great speed for his size — yet he maintains the ability to stick ball carriers in the A-gap. When the Buckeyes have been right, it’s usually been correlated with solid linebacker play as well.

Holy hell Nick Bosa

Most people likely had sky-high expectations for Bosa considering the trail of quarterbacks his brother laid to waste during his three seasons, but did anyone truly think Nick could make a similar impact as Joey on a down-by-down basis? Well, he has, and draft experts are already saying Nick would be a top-five pick in this year’s draft if he was eligible. He quickly proved to Michigan State that they had no chance of blocking him, and the rest of the defense followed his lead:

Defensive line dominance was expected from this unit, but it’s tough to imagine anyone expecting Bosa to stand out in the manner he has. We may look back at this defensive line and see six or more NFLers; just remember Bosa was the one standing taller than the rest.

D-line dominance against the Nittany Lions

Ohio State’s inability to control the line of scrimmage has more-or-less been the root cause of their two embarrassing blowout defeats this season. They refused to let this happen against Penn State when it mattered most, neutralizing the same Nittany Lions offense that has run roughshod over the rest of the country to that point:

The Buckeyes have always had the ability to be a great defense, and they have been just that for the majority of this season. Playoff scenarios aside, the Buckeyes will need their defense to be the best its been all season to make it out of the Big Ten with three more victories. Here’s to hoping they get that ball rolling this Saturday afternoon.

This matchup pits #9 Ohio State and Illinois on Senior Day, which will obviously be their last game at the Shoe and it has the makings of another emotional game. Ohio State will be facing a team that is struggling to find their identity and also a team that still has not gotten a conference win this season, that is sitting at 2-8 overall. The Buckeyes will not overlook this Illini team because besides this being their last home game, the Illibuck trophy is up for grabs again.

Since 2001, Illibuck has been stashed away at Ohio State, but a baller named Juice Williams upset the Buckeyes and took it away for a short vacation to Champagne. There are many players that will ensure that chaos does not happen. From J.T. Barrett to Damon Webb, each Senior will play their hearts out. The underclassmen and potential early entries for the draft will also ensure that their Seniors are not disappointed in their last game at home, especially before the Game.

Ball Security Dilemma:

One thing of concern will be J.T. Barrett and turnovers. In the last two games, he has thrown 6, yes 6 interceptions. He has difficulties with accuracy and ball placement, but this game will present an opportunity to fix and adjust prior to traveling to Ann Arbor for the Game.

Last week, Barrett was all over the place in the passing attack, but he rarely needed to air it out because the run game was unstoppable against a normally stout Spartan defense. The Buckeyes beat the snot out of them and routed them, and with their playoff hopes on life support, they cannot afford any more hiccups and they must win out and win the conference, but that is not what is important. The important thing for them is staying focused and taking care of the ball, and that starts with Barrett at the helm.

This Lovie Smith led defense is surrendering 204.1 passing yards and 198.9 rushing yards per game, but they have not faced the caliber and types of athletes that the Buckeyes have on their roster. Look for Meyer to establish the run early and often to soften the coverage for play action passes. This will be a confidence booster and they will need all they can get.

Defenses Last Stand:

The question on everyone’s mind, and mine especially, is who will get a targeting penalty this time? Ward, Bosa, Jones, and Arnette have been ejected for targeting and it has been a trend for this team this year. The Buckeyes cannot afford any stupid targeting penalties, especially in the second half because another pair of gold pants will be on the line against the TTUN.

Jaylin Holmes, Tracy Sprinkle, Dante Booker, Chris Worley, Tyquan Lewis, Michael Hill, and Erick Smith will play their last game and they would love to finish the season with a conference championship, their only goal right now. There are others like Bosa, Baker, Ward, Arnette, and Hubbard, who may leave after this season, but a lot is on the line in this game, even with an overmatched team in your way.

Illinois will have a new QB after Dudek went down with an injury, and may not be back next year. George has thrown 10 INT’s so far during his time in the fire and I am sure that the defense will force a few due to his inexperience.

Ground and Pound:

The duo of Weber and Dobbins will be featured in this contest a lot. They ran all over Michigan State and will look to add to their momentum just in time for the game. They all do not want to let their Seniors down in their last game at the Shoe, especially when Weber might potentially leave after this season.

Billy Price and Jamarco Jones, along with Barrett will fight alongside both RB’s for Illibuck and for bragging rights and Zone 6 will also try to explode onto the scene to put the game away early to rest for the Game. This game is their last chance to correct any and all quirks on the offensive side of the ball to walk into Ann Arbor with added momentum and focus because the Game is always exciting and unpredictable.

Prediction:

Ohio State picks up where they left off in the running game and finely tunes the passing attack to prepare for TTUN. Barrett throws at least one pick in the game, but has 3 TD’s to Zone 6 and a rushing TD. The RB’s run wild and salt the game away and combine for 180 yards and 4 scores en route to a 56-6 thrashing of Illinois.

Ohio State defeats Illinois 56-6.
