Did Dabo Swinney’s negative recruiting cost OSU the state’s best player?

“It is also a program that does a great job at developing good football players into elite football players. Coach (Urban) Meyer doesn’t just want his players to get a degree but he wants to help them start a career and he makes sure that certain things are in place to make sure that happens.”

- Master Teague, via the Tennessean

The first day of the first ever early signing period for college football recruiting was a day of highs and lows for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Highs

Lows

So, however you feel about the Buckeyes’ haul today, there is an embarrassment of talent in this class, and Master Teague is one of the players to be excited about. One of three running backs in the class, Teague is a four-star talent who rushed for over 2,000 yards as a junior, and is one of two four-star players to sign with the Buckeyes from central Tennessee.

In his first person account of why he decided to attend The Ohio State University, Teague said that the opportunities, both on and off the field, that the school provides were exactly what he was looking for in a university to attend.

In addition, he said that his connection with running back coach Tony Alford was instrumental in his decision, as was the stability of the coaching staff.

“We knew that The Ohio State had solid program,” he said of his family. “It is a program with solid coaches and a winning tradition. There is little chance that there will be a coaching change.”

Clearly this idea of continuity was something that the program engrained in Teague. Unfortunately, Dabo Swinney didn’t get that memo.

“Meyer is 53. Swinney is 48. That’s not such a big age gap, and it doesn’t feel like Meyer’s on the verge of quitting any time soon.”

-Alex Kirshner and Matt Brown, SBNation

Just last week, Ohio State assistant head coach and defensive line coach Larry Johnson publicly addressed negative recruiting going around the recruiting trail that he was preparing to retire from coaching in the coming years. In no uncertain terms, Johnson made it clear that this was not the case.

Then, when asked about it in his press conference today, Urban Meyer said that Ohio State doesn’t engage in negative recruiting, and he rarely hears about any directed at his team since he doesn’t spend much time on social media.

I bet he’s going to hear about this one. As mentioned above, the No. 1 player in the state of Ohio, Jackson Carman, chose to play his college football at Clemson University, and when doing interviews following his commitment ceremony, the offensive lineman let slip that Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had told him that Meyer was on the “back end of his career,” implying that the OSU coach would be hanging it up before Carman was done with his college career.

Carman said that while this wasn’t a major factor in his decision, it was something that was in the back of his mind throughout.

It’s interesting to me that two highly sought-after recruits like Teague and Carman could somehow get such disparate views of the state of the Buckeyes’ coaching staff. Is this a case of Swinney’s negative recruiting influencing Carman more than he knows or is admitting? Is it a case of being recruited by different assistant coaches leading to different impressions? Or is it just high school kids making major life decisions for their own reasons and justifying them afterwards?

Whatever the case may be, I doubt this will be the last we hear of this, and as Kirshner and Brown note in their article, losing Carman is a big miss for the Buckeyes. He is an immediate, difference-making presence on an offensive line that always seems to be searching for depth. Meyer and company still have until Feb. 7 to wind up this class, so they could find an impact o-lineman by then, but it probably won’t be one as good as the one that got away.

“(T)he Ohio State men’s lacrosse team was tabbed No. 8 in the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook preseason poll while three players – Ben Randall, Tre Leclaire and Ryan Terefenko – were named to the magazine’s preseason All-America team.”

- The Ohio State University

Despite all of the focus on the football team lately, there are other OSU teams that are prepping to kick off their seasons with high expectations as well. One of those teams is the men’s lacrosse squad, which will begin the season ranked No. 8, their highest position to open a season since 2014.

OSU is one of four Big Ten lacrosse teams to begin the season in the top-11, along with No. 4 Maryland, No. 7 Rutgers and No. 11 John’s Hopkins. (Yep, John’s Hopkins is in the B1G for lax).

After two exhibition games in January, the team will officially open the season at Cleveland State on Feb. 3.

Three Buckeyes were named to Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook’s preseason All-America team, with Cincinnati native Ben Randall claiming a first-team spot. The defenseman scooped 50 groundballs last season and added 13 caused turnovers to help make the Buckeyes the conference’s best defensive unit.

The Buckeyes add another play making receiver to their talented class of 2018.

It was only a matter of time.

Urban Meyer and crew have brought the spatula out once again. Similar to other years, the Buckeyes coaching staff have successfully flipped themselves a talented prospect out of his verbal pledge to another program and into calling Columbus his future stomping grounds.

Just like his Christian Brothers High School (MO) teammate and fellow four-star rated wide receiver Kamryn Babb did earlier today, Cameron Brown, a longtime Nebraska pledge, has announced his intentions to suit up for the Ohio State University next fall by signing his National Letter of Intent with the Buckeyes during the early signing period on Wednesday.

The 6’1, 175-pound Brown will add another quick, soft-handed pass catcher to Ohio State’s arsenal of playmakers at wide receiver.

Playing for the state champion Cadets, Brown, the 59th wide receiver, and 340th overall prospect in the class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, hauled in 58 receptions for 931 yards and 13 touchdowns even though he missed most of the postseason with an injury.

Giving Ohio State his word just weeks after officially visiting the Ohio State University campus, Brown now has Ohio State currently sitting at 22 commitments going into the new year.

Scouting Report

Brown can fly down the field to get the football. If you’re a defensive back, you have to keep your eyes on him, or you risk giving up a big pass play down the field. On top of that, Brown will go after and attack the ball. This past season, Brown’s high school, Christian Brothers College, brought home a state title. Now at Ohio State, don’t be too surprised if he helps bring home hardware to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

While he may not be Antonio Brown, Cameron Brown is electric as an offensive threat. (Who knows, maybe he’ll become OSU’s version of the Steelers’ wide out).

It sure looks like it.

Entering the first day of the Early Signing Period, the Ohio State Buckeyes were seen as a main contender for Ohio’s top prospect, offensive tackle Jackson Carman. There was also stiff competition from USC for the five-star from Fairfield, too.

However, as Carman made his announcement at around 11:30 a.m. ET, it was neither the Buckeyes nor Trojans who would get the OT. It was the defending national champions, the Clemson Tigers, who got Ohio’s best prospect.

But how did they do it? Well, it looks like the recruiting spin was of a negative variety toward Ohio State.

Dabo Swinney told Jackson Carman during his recruitment that Urban Meyer is on the back end of his career in terms of years left. “It wasn’t a major factor, but it was an underlying one,” Carman said.

— Ari Wasserman (@AriWasserman) December 20, 2017

It’s no surprise that negative recruiting occurs. Especially when it looks like a coach may be on his way out, or if a school is under the watchful eye of the NCAA, expect other programs to pile on and do what it takes to convince a prospect to look at their school.

The shocking thing here is how quickly it was divulged that negative recruiting occurred. Carman had just made it known that he’s going to Clemson, and then told the media what was said by Dabo Swinney during the recruitment process.

Recruiting is a wild ride, and these types of things do happen, but Swinney’s approach is weird. He beat the Buckeyes last season, but, according to the tweet by Ari Wasserman, still resorted to telling Carman that Urban Meyer was on the back end of his career. If that’s what it took to get Carman, instead of just showing him the Fiesta Bowl film from last season, that’s an, uh, interesting thing to do.

What do you think about negative recruiting? Sound off in the comments.

Cincinnati Reds (2017 official thread of moose knuckle)

That one had to hurt badly. Finley and Harnisch by themslves were overpaying...but Schilling was the O's #1 prospect and had all the hype of a strassburg back then. I know the O's questioned his attitude and work ethic and feared he would be more likely to die in a meth lab explosion than win multiple titles.

It basically wasted 4 years of Cal's prime waiting for Ratiel Palmeroid, Robby AloAids and Mike Mussina to show up for their mid-90s runs but yeah, it sucked the life out of the franchise for a couple years. Pair Harnisch with Schilling, Jimmy Key and Mike Mussina with what they had offensively and they absolutely cash in a title or two in the mid-90s before the Skankees got good again....

Ohio State vs The Citadel, Tuesday, 7:00 p.m., BTN

I would have liked to see Potter, Young, and Musa get mixed in more with the first team a little more instead of coming in as a unit with the second team. Maybe not all three of them at once but mix-and-match with the first team so they get some familiarity with playing with the first team guys. We are going to meet them, especially Potter and Young when we get into conference play not to mention what we play North Carolina this Saturday.

Nice to see Joey Lane hit his free throws.

Once a centerpiece of the 2018 class, the blue chip QB will be playing somewhere else.

Once thought to be one of the centerpieces of Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class, Emory Jones will officially be signing elsewhere.

After taking visits to Florida and Florida State recently, Jones made it official, signing paperwork to join the Florida class of 2018.

Dan Mullen lands his QB of the future, 4-star Emory Jones #Gators: https://t.co/7IDHOEEzJI pic.twitter.com/I5PVKVgK2f

— Brad Crawford (@BCrawford247) December 20, 2017

The high four-star QB would have been one of the highest rated QB recruits in recent Ohio State memory, and had offers and interest from virtually every other major program, from Alabama to Auburn, Clemson and more.

The Buckeyes won’t be without a quarterback in this cycle, as they recently flipped three-star Matthew Baldwin from Colorado State. But, this does mean that another elite option will not be joining what is already a pretty crowded quarterback room at Ohio State.

Even with the possibility of other late flips away from the Buckeyes, Ohio State is poised to sign yet another elite recruiting class, one that could finish as high as No. 1 in the country, depending on how things break elsewhere.

The Buckeye offensive line just missed out on a huge in-state 2018 prospect.

Ohio State started off the morning on the receiving end of 20 signed National Letters of Intent, but there was one guy they missed out on. In-state prospect, five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman announced his decision to attend Clemson over Ohio State.

Jackson Carman: “As of today, I will be a Clemson Tiger.” pic.twitter.com/snQHbNkDLV

— Marcus Hartman (@marcushartman) December 20, 2017

The 6’6, 330-pound OT out of Fairfield, Ohio is the No. 1 player in the state and the No. 1 player at his position in the 2018 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s also ranked as the ninth best player in the country at any position.

This is huge blow to the Buckeyes, especially from an in-state guy. Although, early quotes from the prospect made it seem like he didn’t like being called a “lock” to suit up in Scarlet and Gray. (You don’t know me.)

It’s no wonder the highly-coveted prospect held offers from 41 programs throughout the FBS, but the tackle only took five official visits. Among the top possible landing spots for Carman, were Ohio State, Clemson and South Carolina.

Despite missing out on one of the best incoming 2018 players, the Buckeyes still landed 6’6, 289-pound OT Max Wray out of Middle Tennessee.

Scouting Report

It’s not surprising that the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle is one of few high school players to already possess D1 size. Carman utilized every bit of his 6’6, 330-pound frame in both the run and pass game — and he also has a mean streak. It seemed hard for most defensive ends to even get around Carman in time to get to the quarterback, let alone defeat his block and get pressure.

Carman had a fantastic tendency of finishing the play on top of his man, but it’s his ridiculous athleticism for a man his size that should routinely produce impact blocks via pulls and traps in QB-run schemes.
