Plus, the Ohio State men’s gymnastic team is expected to take home the Big Ten title in 2018.

Apparently there is misinformation about my future. I want to make a bold statement that I am not going anywhere and I’m proud to be Buckeye. #Buckeyes #RushmenForLife

— Larry A. Johnson (@R2X_Rushmen1) December 15, 2017

With coaching changes happening all across the college football landscape, it’s not really all that surprising that Ohio State coach Larry Johnson’s name would be among those rumors. At 65 years old, it’s likely the coach was addressing the chances of him retiring versus leaving for another program, but it’s still good news for the Buckeyes.

The Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Line coach didn’t mince words on Friday and made it abundantly clear that his plans were to stay with Ohio State for the long haul.

As someone who helped coach the likes of Joey and Nick Bosa, Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis, Johnson’s commitment to the Ohio State program should help the Buckeyes on the recruiting trail as well. Johnson is a big draw for some of the top d-line talent in the country, and his mere presence should continue to attract top name targets. The Assistant Head Coach has been with Urban Meyer since 2014, and has produced the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year every year since.

“Another year and it’s more high expectations for head coach Rustam Sharipov and the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team. For the fourth-consecutive season, the Scarlet and Gray have been picked by Big Ten coaches as the preseason favorite to claim the conference title.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes have consistently boasted one of the best men’s gymnastics teams in the country. That streak is expected to continue as the team heads into the 2018 season, as they are once again projected to take home a Big Ten championship.

However, it isn’t just within the conference that the team is expected to succeed, they also enter the season ranked No. 3 in the preseason College Gymnastics Association coaches poll. Their lofty spot is due in large part to returning a handful of guys from last year’s team that went on to finish as the runners-up in the NCAA competition and the Big Ten champs.

“This preseason poll earns us nothing and we know that every year is a new year. Instead, we focus our energy on finding ways to push ourselves in the gym to get better on a daily basis and everything else will take care of itself,” said head coach Rustam Sharipov.

The Buckeyes also feature two of the athletes tabbed as Athletes to Watch for the 2018 season, Sean Melton and Alec Yoder. Both Melton and Yoder earned spots on the U.S. National Team this summer after impressive performances at the P&G Championships.

The season will start for the Buckeyes in less than a month, with the Ohio State team beginning their 2018 slate on the road in Colorado on Jan. 13, on the Air Force campus.

“Sammy Edwards, Nikki Walts and Morgan Wolcott, seniors on the Ohio State women’s soccer team, have been named Scholar All-Americans by the United Soccer Coaches, the organization announced Thursday. ”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

As the 2017 soccer season came to an end, the OSU women’s squad finished 15-5-1 on the year and claimed the first outright Big Ten championship in program history. Along with a division title, three players took home Scholar All-America honors, with Nikki Walts and Morgan Wolcott getting first-team nods and Sammy Edwards receiving second-team Scholar All-American.

A team co-captain, Nikki Walts also finished the season as Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and first team All-Big Ten in 2017, wrapping up the year ranked No. 1 on the team and No. 2 in the conference with nine assists in her 21 starts.

Morgan Wolcott is a three-time team captain for the Buckeyes, and helped the team to a 0.59 goals-against average and 10 shutouts. As an 18-match starter, Wolcott also earned Big Ten Defender of the Year, first team All-Big Ten and second team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.

MC&J hopes some early Christmas treats are under the tree, as we pick the first seven games of the bowl season

Last week ATS: 5-4 (5-3 National, 0-1 B1G)

Season ATS: 93-93-4 (45-40-2 National, 48-53-2 B1G)

I really wish MC&J would have had a better record heading into bowl season, but if we can’t have a huge winning percentage to start the postseason, what better way to go in than even? After all, teams only have to be .500 to make a bowl. So, if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for us. This truly means that bowl season is going to decide it all.

Bowl games:

New Orleans Bowl: Troy (-7) v. North Texas - 1:00 PM EST - ESPN

Troy pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the college football season when they went into Baton Rouge in late September and beat LSU 24-21. The Trojans have quietly put together one of the better seasons among Group of Five teams, and a win on Saturday would give them 11 wins for the first time since they joined the FBS in 2001.

After failing to reach .500 for the last three seasons, North Texas has got to nine wins this season for the first time since 2013. The combination of quarterback Mason Fine and running back Jeffrey Wilson has provided the Mean Green with a potent offensive attack that many of their opponents have had a hard time slowing down.

It isn’t exactly ideal to be laying a touchdown to begin bowl season against a North Texas team that can put some points up on the board, but Troy has one of the better defenses that North Texas has squared off against. We get an entertaining bowl game to start the year, with Troy eventually winning by double-digits.

Troy 38, North Texas 28

Cure Bowl: Western Kentucky (-6.5) v. Georgia State - 2:30 PM EST - CBS Sports Network

The Hilltoppers are still able to move the football through the air with quarterback Mike White, but there has been a noticeable regression of their passing attack this year without head coach Jeff Brohm, who moved on to Purdue. Western Kentucky has had trouble running the football this year, with D’Andre Ferby leading the way with just 362 yards rushing.

Georgia State has played considerably better away from home, and while I think the Hilltoppers are going to take the win, the Panthers will at least keep things close. In a game that is pretty much a toss-up, take the points.

Western Kentucky 23, Georgia State 20

Las Vegas Bowl: No. 25 Boise State v. Oregon (-7) - 3:30 PM EST - ABC

I had a write-up about how Oregon was going to build some momentum for next year now that Mario Cristobal has taken over as head coach, and quarterback Justin Herbert is healthy again. I threw it in the trash when it was announced that senior running back Royce Freeman would skip this game to concentrate on the NFL Draft.

While Freeman isn’t going to show up for the postseason, Boise State usually does, winning six of their last eight bowl games. Slowing down the Oregon offense won’t be easy, even without Freeman, the Broncos have one of the better defenses in the country. Even if Boise State doesn’t win, I feel like they keep things close against the Ducks.

Oregon 35, Boise State 31

New Mexico Bowl: Marshall v. Colorado State (-6) - 4:30 PM EST - ESPN

I always like calling this the Breaking Bad Bowl because I honestly can’t associate much else with New Mexico. Maybe they should try to get sponsors like Los Pollos Hermanos or The Offices of Saul Goodman & Associates as sponsors.

Oh yeah, there is a football game going on. Sorry, I got carried away for a second. I can’t say that I’ve watched a whole bunch of either team this year, but Colorado State does jump off the page with some of the stats they’ve racked up. Not only has Nick Stevens thrown for 3,479 yards and 27 touchdowns, with his favorite target being Michael Gallup, who hauled in 94 catches and 1,345 yards, but Dalyn Dawkins also rolled up 1,349 yards on the ground.

I just think Colorado State is going to have too much offense for Marshall to keep pace with in this one. By the end of the game Mike Bobo will be telling Doc Holliday to “say my name.”

Colorado State 31, Marshall 20

Camellia Bowl: Middle Tennessee State v. Arkansas State (-3.5) - 8:00 PM EST - ESPN

Who knows where Middle Tennessee State might be bowling this year had quarterback Brent Stockstill not gotten injured earlier in the season. After leading the Blue Raiders to an upset win over Syracuse early on, Stockstill was sidelined for the next six games, which Middle Tennessee State lost four of. Since returning, the Blue Raiders have won three out of four.

Arkansas State started the season with a near-upset of Nebraska in Lincoln, and continued to impress the rest of the way, and quarterback Justice Hansen threw for 34 touchdowns this year. However, I’m nervous about the 15 interceptions that he threw, but I think the Arkansas State quarterback will come out on top of the battle with Stockstill.

Arkansas State 41, Middle Tennessee State 34

Boca Raton Bowl: Akron v. Florida Atlantic (-23) - 7:00 PM EST - ESPN

What a first season Lane Kiffin put together in Boca Raton, and to cap it off the Owls get a home game to close it out. After losing three of their first four this year, Florida Atlantic rattled off nine-straight wins and took home the Conference USA crown.

Akron certainly has been put through the wringer this year. After starting the season with non-conference games against Penn State, Iowa State, and Troy, the Zips also had to face Toledo twice, with the most recent game against the Rockets being a loss in the MAC Championship Game.

Even though the Zips were able to cover a big spread last time out against Toledo, I don’t think the same fate will be in store for Terry Bowden’s team on Tuesday night. Even though this spread is huge for a bowl game, its hard to see Florida Atlantic getting tested at home, especially since the Owls have scored at least 30 points in 10 straight games.

Florida Atlantic 55, Akron 21

Frisco Bowl: Louisiana Tech v. SMU (-5) - 8:00 PM EST

Since there wasn’t a whole bunch of intrigue along with this game heading in, SMU spiced things up a bit when they announced that former Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes would be coaching the Mustangs in the bowl game. SMU was forced to name a new coach after Chad Morris left to take the Arkansas gig.

When you think of bleh bowl teams, Louisiana Tech is one of them. Not that the Bulldogs can’t play some entertaining football, but they are just one of those 6-6 teams that does some things well, but nothing all that great. I keep trying to find a reason to pick Louisiana Tech here, especially with SMU’s terrible defense, but I’m just not finding any reason to not take Dykes and the Mustangs.

SMU 44, Lousiana Tech 31

Could Tayvion Robinson be the next great Buckeye pass-catcher?

What a week it has been for Ohio State football recruiting. With commitment pick-ups from two of the nation’s top remaining targets in Kamryn Babb and Tommy Togiai, Urban Meyer and his staff struck gold once again in the 2018 cycle. A direct correlation to the success this staff sees on the recruiting trail is due to the notion that when once class is signed, sealed, and delivered, the efforts to the next class are already in full force.

Accordingly, the Buckeye football staff has yet again proven that while their focus is putting a bow on the 2018 class and reeling in their finishing touches, 2019’s prospects are still seeing attention and rightfully so. With early signing day coming ever so quickly, Urban and company are full throttle towards the finish line.

2019 WRs are the trend for OSU

Lately it seems that the wide receiver position is the trend for Ohio State recruiting. With the pickup of a top star this week and the offers going out left and right to top 2019 receivers, it’s easy to see that Zach Smith knows the importance of a receiver in this Buckeye offense.

Fortunately, the most recent few classes will only help to give the Buckeyes continued options on the outside in this fast-paced offensive attack. The future too looks as bright as ever due to the never ending pursuit of the next Buckeye great.

Truly blessed to receive my 8th offer from THE Ohio State University ️‼️
#BuckeyeNation pic.twitter.com/CwpHLFFSVQ

— Tayvion Robinson (@RobinsonTayvion) December 14, 2017

Yesterday, the latest 2019 receiver prospect was offered when Tayvion Robinson took to his Twitter to announce his eighth and latest scholarship coming from Ohio State. The Virginia Beach native currently ranks as the sixth-best prospect in a very talented state of Virginia and the 46th-best receiver in the country, according to the 247sports 2019 grades.

At 5'10, 165 pounds, Robinson still has a year under his belt to develop even more both physically and athletically, but his offer from Ohio State shows he’s a prospect not to look past. With schools such as Duke, Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech, and more already in the fold, you can bet there’s more to come.

Coach Smith hinted on Twitter earlier this week that the “recruiting” was not done as he headed to the South and Robinson looks to be one of the reasons behind his tweets. Fortunately, Ohio State has hit the jackpot on more than one occasion when they’ve recruited Virginia Beach. Will this be the next case? Time will only tell.

A decision in the making

Just last week current Nebraska Cornhuskers football commit Cameron Brown took an official visit to Columbus to see Ohio State and what the Buckeye football program has to offer. The 4-star receiver from St. Louis took the visit with the fact that Nebraska—who he committed to at the time—now had a different coaching situation. While that situation looks to be improved, there’s still some unfamiliarity between the two parties, and of course Brown took his opportunities to at least see elsewhere.

The interesting piece? Brown is the current teammate of Kamryn Babb, one of the two latest commits to Ohio State’s 2018 class. The Christian Brothers College teammates are one dynamic high school duo and the possibility that they end back up together at the next level is looking more and more possible by the day. Rumors have swirled that while his pledge is still with Nebraska, when the pen hits the paper for signing day, it could be the Buckeyes that land the 4-star prospect.

I will be signing on December 20th at 12:15 @ CBC High School This crazy recruiting journey will come to an end soon #Blessed

— Cameron Brown® (@luh_cam_) December 14, 2017

Yesterday, an important detail from Brown himself was announced via his Twitter: that his plans are to sign on December 20th as part of the early signing period. The two parties most involved have obviously been mentioned already, but it’s important to note that more than eighty percent of the 247sports crystal ball predictions in fact belong to Ohio State. Both fan bases and coaching staffs will know within the next week, but things are certainly trending toward Ohio State for the other piece of the Christian Brothers duo. If so, the Buckeyes will then have pledges from Ohio’s L’Christian Smith, Kamryn Babb, and Brown. A more than impressive haul for Zach Smith and the Buckeyes' 2018 class.

J.K. Dobbins led the new Buckeyes, bursting onto the scene setting the Ohio State freshman rushing record.

“The final verdict is still at least a couple years away, and the sample size for Ohio State’s touted 2017 recruiting class is small. But it’s never too early for a progress report, particularly after so many newcomers made splashy debuts with the Buckeyes and appear to be well on the way to becoming stars in the Big Ten.”

Austin Ward, Land of 10

There is no question that running back J.K. Dobbins has been the star of Ohio State’s 2017 recruiting class so far, but he hasn’t been the only new Buckeye to impress this year. Dobbins got the call to start early on, as running back Mike Weber started the season dealing with a hamstring injury. The Texas product didn’t take long to make some waves, rushing for 181 yards in a win over Indiana. Dobbins went on to become the fourth Ohio State freshman to rush for 1,000 yards, breaking Maurice Clarett’s school record for most rushing yards by a freshman.

He didn’t get a ton of action during the season, but defensive end Chase Young was able to find some reps amongst a talented Ohio State defensive line. With players like Sam Hubbard, Nick Bosa, and Tyquan Lewis already lining up at defensive end, it would have been easy to redshirt Young this year. Instead, Young finished the year with 2.5 sacks, and saw time during high pressure situations for the Buckeyes, especially during the Michigan game. With a number of defensive linemen leaving after this year, the future is bright for Young.

Cornerback Kendall Sheffield saw a little more playing time than some of his teammates in the secondary who came to Ohio State at the same time, primarily because Sheffield already had some playing experience after coming to Ohio State as a transfer. If Sheffield remains in Columbus for another year, he could team with Jeffrey Okudah in the secondary, who made a name for himself with strong play on special teams in 2017.

The biggest question mark of the 2017 recruiting class is going to be quarterback Tate Martell. After being thrust into action following an injury to J.T. Barrett against Michigan, Dwayne Haskins looks to have a firm grasp on the starting quarterback position next year. That doesn’t mean Haskins won’t see some competition, especially from Martell. Even if Martell isn’t able to win the starting job, Ohio State will likely try to find a way to utilize his athletic ability on offense.

“We’re continually figuring out his system, how he wants us to run on offense in transition and half court. That prepares guys to be better prepared to shoot. You know where the ball’s going to come from, you know how to find the seams in the zone.”

Ohio State guard Kam Williams on Chris Holtmann’s offense via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Despite positing a 5-3 record through the first eight games of the season, Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann had a simple message for his players. Take better shots. Mainly Holtmann was talking about the type of three-pointers Ohio State was taking during the first eight games of the season that left a lot to be desired.

Ohio State started the season shooting 32.7% from behind the arc in their first eight games of the season. Since Holtmann asked his players to take better shots, Ohio State has been considerably better from long range, making 23 of 48 three-pointers over the next three games. On Saturday against William & Mary, Ohio State hit a season-high 11 three-pointers against the Tribe.

One big thing to remember when looking at Ohio State basketball so far this season, is the Buckeyes are just 11 games into Holtmann’s tenure, and to respond so positively early on is impressive. Many thought that the first year under the former Butler coach would be rough, especially with the lack of depth and experience for the Buckeyes, but so far Ohio State has found plenty of success early on. While expectations still shouldn’t get too out of hand, the Buckeyes are improving tremendously as they adjust to Holtmann’s style of play.

“I think if he consistently improves in those areas like he has, I think the sky is the limit. I certainly think he can be one of the best players in our league for sure. He’s got to do it consistently; he’s got to do it on both ends and he’s got to do it in all facets of the game.”

There is no question who Ohio State basketball’s most valuable player has been so far this year. After missing most of last year due to injury, forward Keita Bates-Diop is making up for some lost time with his performance. The junior is leading Ohio State with 18.3 points per game and 9.5 rebounds per game so far this year.

All of Bates-Diop’s time on the floor hasn’t been perfect though. While Bates-Diop is leading Ohio State with 32.8 minutes per game, head coach Chris Holtmann has seen some times where he feels Bates-Diop was underperforming, most notably early on against William & Mary on Saturday. Holtmann brought Bates-Diop to the bench to re-focus, and the junior did just that, finishing with a career-high 27 points in the victory.

With the lack of depth and experience that the Ohio State basketball team has, Holtmann can’t afford to have any lapses on the court from Bates-Diop. Not only does Holtmann rely on the junior forward to be the most productive, but he also needs Bates-Diop to set an example for what the coach expects from his players on the court not only for this year, but going forward. So far, Bates-Diop has been up to the task, but Ohio State is going to need even more from him as they will been venturing back into conference play after the New Year.
