That is one healthy spread for a team losing the best statistical QB in conference history.

With the 2017-2018 season now squarely in the rearview mirror, the sights of the college football world are now set on the fall. Coming off of a 12-2 record and a top-5 finish, the expectations are again going to be high for the Ohio State Buckeyes, despite the fact that they are saying goodbye to J.T. Barrett, the most decorated quarterback in Big Ten history.

However, Barrett’s absence under center doesn’t seem to have hampered the oddsmakers’ confidence in the Buckeyes. According to 247Sports, online sportsbook 5Dimes.eu has installed Ohio State as a 30.5-point favorite to beat the Oregon State Beavers in their season-opening matchup on Sept. 1, 2018.

Despite being a Power-5 team, the Beavers finished the 2017 season with an abysmal 1-11 record, going winless in the Pac-12, their only win coming against FCS’s Portland State, 35-32.

Oregon State did play a Big Ten team in 2017, as they hosted Minnesota in Corvallis, Ore. The Gophers beat the Beavers 48-14 in early September. The one common opponent between the two OSUs was the USC Trojans. Ohio State beat USC 24-7 in the Cotton Bowl, while the Men of Troy knocked off Oregon State 38-10 in October.

The Beavers will be looking to turn their fortunes around as they welcome in new head coach Jonathan Smith, who comes from one of the Pac-12’s best programs in recent years, the Washington Huskies. Smith has served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator since 2014.

The battle of OSUs will open the 2018 season for both schools. Kickoff time and TV broadcasting plans will be announced at a later date.

Elite defensive line prospect Tyler Friday has finished up his visits and will likely commit soon, and fellow New Jersey prospect Javonte Jean-Baptiste might not be far behind. Could the two commit together?

With Ohio State already having 22 future Buckeyes committed to the program following the early signing period, there is now little room to add to the Buckeyes’ impressive 2018 class. The Buckeyes will likely look to add at most three more recruits this year, and one of those could be happening in the coming days.

Elite defensive tackle prospect Tyler Friday (Ramsey, NJ / Don Bosco) has been seeing his name associated with the Ohio State program plenty in the last week. After being a Michigan lean for the majority of his recruiting process, Ohio State has now gained the momentum in his recruitment, with 91-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions now favoring the Buckeyes.

On top of this, Friday received an in-home visit from Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson this past weekend. Johnson has played a critical role in Ohio State’s ability to overtake Michigan as the favorite to land Friday, so one can assume the visit only helped Ohio State’s chances.

Late last week, Adam Friedman of Rivals.com reported that Friday was nearing a decision and that an announcement could’ve happened over the weekend. While the weekend came and went, Friday never announced a decision.

So what does this mean?

For one, it doesn’t mean Ohio State’s momentum is running dry and that they are losing ground in his commitment. If anything, it means that Friday is taking his time ensuring he makes the best decision for himself.

Expect Friday to still make a decision sooner rather than later. However, with National Signing Day being only a few weeks away, it is still possible that Friday waits until then to make an announcement.

Fellow New Jersey OLB set to visit Buckeyes this weekend

The aforementioned Friday isn’t the only New Jersey prospect Ohio State is targeting late in the recruiting process. Outside linebacker Javonte Jean-Baptiste (Oradell, NJ / Bergen Catholic) is also being courted by Ohio State and is slated to schedule the program this coming weekend.

While Friday was meeting with Ohio State last weekend, the four-star OLB visited Nebraska and seemed to like what he saw.

— dontMessWithOcho (@Javontae_JB) January 14, 2018

While Nebraska certainly helped their chances in securing a commitment from Jean-Baptiste, Ohio State is still viewed as the clear favorite in his recruitment, holding 73-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

As mentioned above, Jean-Baptiste is scheduled to visit Ohio State this weekend and if he enjoys his time in Columbus, the Buckeyes could all but secure a commitment from the elite OLB.

Package deal?

The most compelling news to come of the weekend happened after both of these New Jersey natives finished up talking to their respective schools.

Jean-Baptiste reached out to Friday late in the weekend and while all eyes were focused on their brief Twitter conversation, the two took it behind closed doors before anything of actual importance came to light.

— dontMessWithOcho (@Javontae_JB) January 15, 2018

Does this mean the duo are a package deal?

Far from it. The two were more than likely discussing what they like about the schools since Friday was recruited by Nebraska as well. Until we hear otherwise, this can only be viewed as two friends talking to each other to help make sure both select the program best for them.

Expect more news to follow Jean-Baptiste’s visit to Ohio State this weekend and a commitment could happen before that for Friday.

With several underclassmen declaring for the NFL Draft, the Buckeyes are prepared to rebuild their defense in the offseason.

“This is a decision many expected from Baker, but it’s something OSU must now account for. How to the Scarlet and Grey adjust with the two-year starter now gone?”

-Patrick Murphy, 247Sports

Urban Meyer and company are certainly used to this routine by now. Every year, some of the best players for Ohio State choose to leave school early as a potential high pick in the NFL Draft. In 2017, the Buckeyes had seven players selected, including five underclassmen. Of the underclassmen, defensive backs Marshon Lattimore and Malik Hooker were both taken in the first round.

This year is not likely to be much different. Several Buckeyes have already declared that they will be foregoing their remaining college eligibility to enter the draft, including defensive end Sam Hubbard, cornerback Denzel Ward and, most recently, linebacker Jerome Baker. These departures leave the defense in a similar position to last season, when four defensive players were selected in the first two rounds of the draft.

Baker has been one of the Buckeyes’ best linebackers during his two seasons as a starter. As a sophomore, Baker came off the bench early in the season, but quickly earned a starting gig that he has not relinquished during his career in Columbus. He finished the 2017 season as the team’s top tackler, recording 72 tackles on the year, including eight tackles for loss.

Complicating matters somewhat is the fact that fellow linebacker Chris Worley, a fifth-year senior, is also departing the program. Worley proved one of the most dynamic players in the linebacking corps, having played all three linebacker positions this year, and ended the season with 56 total tackles. Replacing both Worley, who is projected to be selected late in this year’s draft, as well as Baker is a tall order. However, the Buckeyes return Tuf Borland, who has seen significant playing time this season, as well as Malik Harrison. Similar to the situation its secondary faced last season, Ohio State may be losing lauded stars to the NFL, but had enough firepower in its arsenal to not skip a beat heading into 2018.

“I didn’t know any of these guys, but I knew they came from a great program in Butler. I knew some faces over there, so that helped, but I just really wanted to reach out and make things better.”

-D’Angelo Russell, via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Just a few short months ago, former Ohio State basketball star D’Angelo Russell said that he didn’t think he would ever go back to visit with the Buckeyes, given the program’s treatment of former head coach Thad Matta. However, the third-year point guard for the Brooklyn Nets was courtside Sunday night as Ohio State downed Rutgers 68-46 in Piscataway. After the game, Russell and teammate Caris LeVert went to the Buckeyes’ locker room to celebrate with the team. Russell met current head coach Chris Holtmann and greeted former players who were with the program when Russell was in Columbus, including former roommate Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate.

Holtmann and Russell’s relationship got off to a rough start over the summer when Holtmann was first named head coach. Russell had previously stated that “it messed me up completely” how Ohio State managed Matta’s departure from the program, but has since acknowledged his support for the new regime: “It’s a good experience, coming back. Just showing my support with the team being in town. I just wanted to come by and show my support.”

Holtmann said that he didn’t know Russell would be at the game, but mentioned that the two had been texting throughout the week leading up to the matchup. The new coach also said that Russell is “welcome back whenever” with the team.

Russell and Matta grew close during Russell’s sole season with the Buckeyes from 2014-15, prior to Russell being taken second-overall in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Lakers. In that time, the point guard was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. After spending two rather tumultuous years in L.A., Russell was traded to the Nets. Now, the former standout is averaging a career-best 20.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

“The Buckeyes have been No. 1 all season, and will likely be the favorite for the NCAA team title.”

-Mark Podolski, The News-Herald

Depending on which poll you are looking at, the Ohio State Buckeyes wrestling team is assuredly in one of the top spots nationally. The Buckeyes are 8-0 in match play this season, having already defeated the likes of No. 17 Rutgers and, most recently, No, 14 Minnesota. Ohio State is more than halfway through its season at this point, and things are looking up across the board for the squad as wrestlers at each weight class seem to be firing at all cylinders.

Things don’t get any easier for the Buckeyes moving forward, however. Next up, Ohio State faces No. 7 Iowa in Columbus in their last home dual of the season. Then, next month, they are scheduled to go on the road to face top-ranked Penn State. The Nittany Lions have won every NCAA title since 2011, with the exception of Ohio State’s win in 2016, and are the Buckeyes’ fiercest competition for a championship this season.

Led by Kyle Snyder, the Buckeyes appear poised for their second NCAA team title in four years. Snyder himself is a two-time NCAA champion and an Olympic gold medalist. Currently, five Buckeyes are in the conversation to take home individual national titles. Three of these wrestlers--Snyder, Nathan Tomasello and Kollin Moore--are ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes. Myles Martin and Luke Pletcher are sitting at the No. 2 spots of their own weight classes. Collectively, these five wrestlers are 55-0 in individual matches on the season. Tomasello returned to the Ohio State lineup versus Minnesota after missing a number of matches due to injury, while Snyder has missed matches while traveling for international competitions.

Ohio State has six more dual matches before the Big Ten Tournament, hosted in East Lansing at Michigan State. The NCAA Tournament is scheduled for the middle of March, to be played out in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena.

The announcement marks KBD’s third POW this season.

For the second week in a row, Ohio State redshirt junior Keita Bates-Diop was named the Big Ten Player of the Week. In games against Maryland and Rutgers, the Buckeye star averaged 23 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in wins that helped propel OSU to their first AP Poll appearance in nearly three years.

Another week, another @KBD_33 #B1G player of the week montage. #rinserepeat pic.twitter.com/H1gb1aHlWt

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) January 15, 2018

In the win against Maryland, KBD went for 26 points and eight rebounds, while against Rutgers, he finished one board shy of a 20-10 double-double. In the past seven days, he went 18-of-34 (52.9%) from the field, including 8-of-15 (53.3%) from behind the three-point arc.

This is his third Big Ten Player of the Week honor of the season for Bates-Diop. He was also honored on Dec. 11, 2017.

Michigan State’s Jaren Jackson Jr. was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week while averaging 17.5 points, four rebounds, and four blocks against Rutgers and Michigan. This is Jackson’s third FOW honor of the season.

The Buckeyes will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Rosemont, Ill. to visit the Northwestern Wildcats. The game will air on the Big Ten Network, and will tip off at 9 p.m. ET.

Congrats to KBD on yet another honor, richly deserved.

The Buckeyes currently sit alone atop the Big Ten standings.

Like the men’s basketball team, who cracked the AP Top 25 for the first time in nearly three years when the latest batch of rankings came out on Monday, the Buckeye women’s team continues to climb the rankings in hopes of eventually playing for a national championship at Nationwide Arena, just a few miles from the OSU campus.

In the latest AP Poll, OSU moved up two slots to No. 8, the highest position of any Big Ten team. Also representing the conference in the rankings are No. 14 Maryland, No. 19 Michigan, and No. 25. Rutgers.

At 16-2 overall, and 5-0 in conference play, head coach Kevin McGuff’s team sits alone atop the B1G standings, after their 77-62 win over Indiana on Saturday. Perennial Player-of-the-Year contender Kelsey Mitchell leads the league averaging 25.6 points per game, while red-shirt senior Linnae Harper comes in at 11th with 15.4.

Their classmate, Stephanie Mavunga, is second in the conference averaging 11.3 rebounds per contest, and Harper is chipping in with 8.8, ranking seventh in the B1G. For good measure, Harper is also tied for third in the Big Ten averaging 2.4 steals per game.

The Buckeyes will host Michigan on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET, and the game will be broadcast on BTN. The teams matched up earlier this month in Ann Arbor, Mich., with OSU earning a 78-71 win in overtime.

2017 CFB Bowl Games Open Thread

Confession: I've been in London since January 3 so I can only speak from the little bit of the final game I've been able to see here. I remain convinced that Ohio State had enough talent to play with any of the teams contending for the NC, too include UCF. BUT, the Buckeyes were not the team we collectively thought they could/should/ought to have been. They did nothing in the second half of their Cotton Bowl game to make me believe that the committee got it wrong outside the possible choice of UCF over Clemson, and while UCF might have won a game against one of the remaining teams, I seriously doubt they would have had the depth to beat two teams of that quality.

Geography was an issue in the finals in that Clemson did not have to venture very far, but Alabama traveled well and so it didn't matter.

In the end, Saban's recruiting and coaching staff paid dividends and they once again prevailed.

Chris Holtmann has the Buckeyes back in the AP Poll for the first time since the end of the 2014-15 season.

After an impressive, undefeated run through the early Big Ten slate, including an upset over the then-No. 1 Michigan State Spartans, the Ohio State Buckeyes have joined the ranks of the AP Poll for the first time since the end of the 2014-15 seasons.

Following yesterday’s 68-46 victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, OSU men’s basketball comes in ranked No. 22 by the Associated Press. They join three other Big Ten schools in the rankings, Purdue (No. 3), Michigan State (No. 9), and Michigan (No. 23).

Also represented in the poll are two other teams from the state of Ohio: Xavier (No. 11) and Cincinnati (No. 12). The Buckeyes will open up the next two seasons against the Bearcats.

Chris Holtmann’s squad has won five straight games, and 10 of 11; the only loss coming to No. 15 North Carolina. The Buckeyes are also tied atop the Big Ten standings with Purdue, and the two squads will face off in West Lafayette, Ind. on Feb. 7.

OSU will next travel to Rosemont, Ill. to take on the Northwestern Wildcats on Wed., Jan. 17. The game will tip at 9 p.m. ET on BTN.
